Consuming cannabis when paired with fats and proteins will change the intensity and duration of effects. With the ingestion of an edible, the average onset of effects is 30 mins (up to 2 hrs) and can last 4- 8 hrs. The effects commonly associated with vaping sativa, indica or hybrid strains may not be as pronounced in edibles. With vaping, the onset is 1-15 mins and the effects last 2-3 hrs. \n\nnptherasse","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_8614-markdown","title":"Cannabis use during pregnancy","slug":"cannabis-use-during-pregnancy","content":"\"Hi there\n\nmy sister recently found out she is pregnant. She uses cannabis daily to help with anxiety and sleep. I have come across conflicting information when it come to smoking during pregnancy. She has been reducing her use for a while but does not want to stop completely. Her works hours begin at 330am and smoking helps regulate her sleep. Does anyone have any helpful information on smoking while pregnant? Should she switch to edibles instead? Thanks so Much! \"\n_____________________\nThe reason why you've come across conflicting information is most likely because the studies--which are few and far between--so far present results that fall on each side of the aisle: one side concluding that consuming cannabis while pregnant has negative effects on the baby in utero, while another side finding that it doesn't. We published an article on this very debate a while back. If this is something your sister can discuss with her doctor, that's something she should do to help her make as informed a decision as possible.\n\nlyp\n_____________________\nI am not a doctor but I believe any doctor your sister would talk to would probably warn her against smoking marijuana during pregnancy. I'll point you to a video we filmed last year that talks about a study done on this topic.\n\nhttps://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5745c73fb8c3a9000c000008/hellomd-live-episode-4\n\npamelahadfield\n_____________________\nI just wanted to chime in here and say that I stopped using cannabis while pregnant and every medical professional I spoke to said I made the right move. I had awful morning sickness and was tempted to treat it with marijuana, but I didn't as I was too scared of the effects on the baby. \n\nWatch the video that Pamela posted here--our chief medical officer says \"Just don't do it!\" He cites a study where pregnant women who used marijuana had a higher rate of pre-term birth than women who did not. \n\nIt's frustrating to treat anything while pregnant--not a lot of studies have been done on taking things while pregnant, so it's hard to get a definitive answer. But I would encourage you to tell your sister to stop using cannabis while she's pregnant. I know it will be frustrating for her (my husband uses cannabis to fight insomnia, so I understand how important it can be for some people for that issue!), but I really would tell her to stop. If she's not convinced, encourage her to talk to her doctor(s) as well.\n\ngabriella\n_____________________\nI know this is a topic with a lot of conflicting views, but I believe the only 'medical' response is that the safety of cannabis use during pregnancy and nursing is unknown. It is for that reason that no clinical professional is willing to OK using it in those circumstances. Despite the lack of clinical science here, we have to be aware that an enormous uncontrolled experiment has been going on in which large numbers of women are using cannabis during pregnancy without supervision. All we know about the outcome is that, so far, no obvious problems have consistently appeared in the population attributable to this. On the one hand, it can give a sense of reassurance that any direct effect is statistically small enough that it hasn't become obvious. On the other hand, of all matters in healthcare, the safety of children during gestation is at the top of the list. Because the stakes are so high reason demands the utmost caution and the most conservative recommendation.\n\ndrelkind","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_8550-markdown","title":"Recommendations for Insomnia & Back Pain","slug":"recommendations-for-insomnia-back-pain","content":"\"I'm very new to this and the options are overwhelming. I simply want one edible candy for insomnia and another for back pain. I'm not interested in getting high. Thank you.\"\n_____________________\nHey there, I find the Kiva petra mints (which are only 2.5 mg per mint) work well in terms of helping me sleep through the night. I will increase my dose at bedtime to 2 mints (or 5 mg) during stressful times. I've also found success using the Kiva chocolate-covered blueberries (which are ~5 mg each), though I switched to the petra mints as I typically only need 2.5 mg to have a good night's sleep. As well, I've tried Kikokko's Tranquili-tea which contains 5 mg CBN and 3 mg THC--CBN is what makes you sleepy, and I found that I had a good night's sleep with it. As for back pain, here's an article you may want to read. The last of the strains in the list is ACDC, which is higher in CBD and lower in THC. I use it in vape form for my chronic migraine pain, and find it to be helpful (along with a 1:1 tincture).\n\nlyp\n_____________________\nTo completely avoid any feelings of being 'high', you can also consider cannabis-infused topicals for back pain. Here is a helpful link: \n\nLarry\n_____________________\nThis may sound strange, but cannabis suppositories seem to help me with lower back pain as well as menstrual issues. I have used Foria Relief many times and have found the pain relief to be fairly immediate and the overall sensation relaxing. Although they are high in THC, and I am VERY sensitive to THC, they are not psychoactive. For many, the idea of a suppository may be off putting, but I think this is one of the best methods of consumtpion when you don't want to get high and want pain relief. As I am very senstivie to THC, this has been a great way for me to take cannabis and not experience any negative side effects. Hope this helps!\n\npamelahadfield","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_8521-markdown","title":"What strains & edibles cause the *least* short term memory loss? ","slug":"what-strains-edibles-cause-the-least-short-term-memory-loss","content":"\"I want to remember what we're talking about!\"\n_____________________\nI am not sure you can give a one size fits all answer to this question. First, someone might be able to take high does of THC and never have short term memory loss, perhaps they have a higher tolerance or perhaps they just do not experience this. I might say that if you experience short term memory loss that this has more to do with the dosage and frequency of use. \n\nIf you like to smoke flower (or vape), you might try smoking a flower that is higher in CBD which could reduce memory loss. If you are smoking high THC smoke less. If you are taking edibles consider microdosing over a longer period of time rather than a high dose in one sitting. Edibles today also can be purchased in higher CBD ratios as well. \n\nI hope this helps!\n\npamelahadfield","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_8444-markdown","title":"Are medical marijuana edibles legal in Louisiana?","slug":"are-medical-marijuana-edibles-legal-in-louisiana","content":"\n_____________________\nNot currently.\n\nAlthough medical marijuana was legalized in Louisiana in 2016, the program is not yet operational. \n\nThe qualifying conditions for medical marijuana in Louisiana are: \n-Cachexia (wasting syndrome)\n-Cancer\n-Crohn's disease\n-Epilepsy\n-HIV/AIDS\n-Muscular Dystrophy\n-Multiple Sclerosis\n-Seizure disorders/Spasticity\n\nThe patient possession limits for cannabis will be a 30-day supply of non-smokable marijuana products. Home cultivation will not be permitted as the law stipulates a single, state-licensed supplier to provide marijuana to the state. It's anticipated that one or two Louisiana universities will be selected as the providers. \n\nShould you anticipate visiting California, you can use HelloMD to obtain a California medical marijuana recommendation while you are here. However, all mammals have receptors for the active compounds in cannabis, including small dogs. Ingesting an uncontrolled amount would lead to things like disorientation and dysfunctional behavior that might cause significant harm. Although I'd expect sedation more than excitation, it is always a good idea to keep all edible cannabis secure from children and pets.\n\ndrelkind","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_8313-markdown","title":"Is the dosing for Marinol the same as it is for edibles?","slug":"is-the-dosing-for-marinol-the-same-as-it-is-for-edibles","content":"\n_____________________\nHello, and thank you for the great question. First and foremost, I see absolutely no reason to use marinol - when natural cannabis is available and has also been shown as more effective than marinol in every study done comparing the two.\n\nMarinol is a synthetic form of THC; Marinol contains none of the over 400 other compounds, including more than 60 cannabinoids found in cannabis. For this reason, Marinol is completely inferior to cannabis and the countless cannabis derivations available today.\n\nI can see no reason to use marinol. I am not apologetic when I state that big pharma will do anything to turn a profit. Marinol holds no benefit for anybody, other than big pharma and their stock holders.\n\nBut to answer your question, 1mg of THC from cannabis = 1mg of THC (synthetic) from Marinol. I recommend starting low and going slow regarding dosing of edibles. A lower dose of edible would be 2.5mg, and that's where I recommend to start. Edibles can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours to become active due to the variability of absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Edibles generally work for 6 hours. It is very easy to overmedicate with edibles, in which case you may feel some negative effects such as anxiety, paranoia, panic attacks, hallucinations, and the effects could last much longer than 6 hours. I don't recommend taking more of an edible within the 6 hour period. After 6 hours, or the next time you need cannabis, if 2.5mg was not enough to achieve your therapeutic goal, increase by another 2.5mg. Increasing incrementally will allow you to slowly find your therapeutic dose with less possibility of overmedicating.
