There are a plethora of fantastic strains available at [dispensaries throughout the state](https://medicalmarijuana.ohio.gov/Documents/Dispensaries/List%20of%20Ohio%20Medical%20Marijuana%20Dispensaries%20with%20Certificates%20of%20Operation.pdf). In fact, the number of cannabis strains can be overwhelming. Even though flower is sold in medical cannabis dispensaries, smoking marijuana is **not permitted** according to state laws. [(HB 523)](https://www.mpp.org/states/ohio/ohio-medical-marijuana-law-summary/). The [Marijuana Policy Project](https://www.mpp.org/states/ohio/#:~:text=The%20petition%20would%20allow%20adults,about%20the%202022%20legalization%20initiative.) states that “raw cannabis may not be smoked, but maybe vaporized.” My favorite way to consume flower is through vaporizing – it hits smoothly, tastes good, and offers a clean high for any [stain of cannabis](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-7-best-medical-marijuana-strains-in-ohio). \n\nIt is good to consult your doctor or a dispensary pharmacist to discuss your condition. They can offer suggestions for strains to target your needs and provide recommendations for the best consumption methods for your unique experience with cannabis. \n\nDylan R.\n__________\n\n![Untitled6.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled6_f326dc840c.png)\n\nOhio dispensaries can sell [flower](https://www.hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/can-you-purchase-medical-marijuana-flower-in-ohio) **tinctures**, **oils**, [edibles](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/dosing-cannabis-edibles-safely) **lotions**, **creams**, and **patches**. I prefer flower because I love to smell the bud and taste the flavor of the profile. Another way to select a strain that will work best for you is to consider the [strain’s terpene](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-are-cannabis-terpenes-and-how-do-they-work) profile. Terpenes, aka “terps,” affect the quality of the high and the flavor and aroma. Today, most companies test for terpenes, and dispensaries will typically list them in the product details on the menu.\n\nIt is a letdown that [smoking is not currently allowed](https://www.hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/consequences-of-getting-a-medical-card-in-ohio) in the state of Ohio – but I’ve thought of a few different ways around it. Thankfully, there are plenty of options for [vaporizers](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-to-vape-marijuana-safely) around the state, and many dispensaries will offer deals on these devices, and they are as simple as smoking out of a pipe. Also, I started experimenting with my recipes for cannabutter and edibles. Creating [DIY recipes](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/diy) is becoming a passion of mine. You can purchase up to eight ounces of flower every 90 days when you have your medical card. If you did not have a card and got caught with that amount, it would be **considered a felony** — punishable with up to a year in prison.\n\nEven though medical cannabis is allowed, you might consider being discreet about your marijuana consumption. **There is no smoking permitted in Ohio**, so smoking anywhere in public is not good. In addition, if you are caught driving under the influence of cannabis, you could be subject to receiving a **DUI ticket** and **having your driver’s license suspended**. Therefore, it is best to avoid driving and consuming cannabis to avoid these penalties. [Vaping](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-benefits-of-vaping-medical-marijuana) can sometimes be easier to maintain when it comes to the order of marijuana smoke.\n\nPlease remember that** cannabis is still illegal at the federal level**. Penalities for cannabis in Ohio range from misdemeanors with small fines for possession of 100 grams to eight years in prison and penalties that can total $20,000 for a felony charge of possessing upwards of 40,000 grams.\n\nCorey T.\n__________\n\n![Untitled5.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled5_41231825d9.png)\n\nYour medical marijuana registration information will never be made public without your explicit authorization. It’s classed as an androgen, which is a male type of sex hormone.  Generally, most of a mans testosterone is produced in his testicles. Adrenal glands also produce some, and so do ovaries in women. The question about influence of marijuana on the testosteron level is not simple and requires more researches and studies. For example, Block RI. et al. stated that smoking marijuana is barely touching the level of testerone. While Murphy L. (2001) stated that smoking cannabis decrease blood levels of the three hormones LH, FSH, and testosterone. It is also known to help with nausea (often experienced during intense physical training), appetite stimulation (especially helpful for power-lifters and MMA fighters who want to consume extra calories for building muscle), and muscle spasms. Cannabis can be consumed in different ways, including smoking. Some athletes may choose to use cannabis during training for the above reasons. Cannabis is however prohibited in sport/during competitions by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Athletes are required to apply for medical exemptions if they intend to use prohibited medication (including cannabis), and their use of the medication must be medically justified. Ultimately, the best way to avoid doping violation for cannabis is through abstinence.\nFYI: See link for a list of world anti-doping agency prohibited substances https://www.wada-ama.org/en/content/what-is-prohibited\n\nLonah NP\n_____________________\n Cannabis is just one of many substances which are legal in Canada, yet prohibited in sport.  \nWhy are cannabinoids prohibited?\nAll prohibited substances are added to the Prohibited List because they meet two of the three following criteria:\n• Use of the substance has the potential to enhance performance;\n• Use of the substance can cause harm to the health of the athlete; and\n• Use of the substance violates the spirit of sport (sportmedbc.com)\n\nHowever, there is one exception. The exception is cannabidiol (CBD). CBD oil is a non-psychoactive derivative of cannabis which was removed from WADA’s prohibited list in 2018. However, athletes should exercise caution as CBD oil often still contains some concentration of the banned substance tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Therefore, the use of CBD oil is at an athlete’s own risk (WADA-AMA.org). \n\n Cannabis in Sport: What Legalization means For Canadian Athlets. https://sportmedbc.com/news/cannabis-sport-what-legalization-means-canadian-athletes \n\n World Anti-Doping Agency. “Prohibited List: January 2018”. We each started with five drops a day as recommended by the helpful MD we talked to on this website. I’m taking 5 drops in the morning and my husband is taking it at night because that’s when our pain is worse. I’m noticing a slight bit of pain relief but what I’m really noticing more is my sleep cycle has become slightly longer. Not a problem. My husband has noticed no change in his sleep and no pain relief. He is worried about addiction, since it seems to be changing my sleep cycle. Is addiction a concern if I stopped taking the tincture? I am trying to ease up on Celebrex. I haven’t smoked pot in many years. Any feedback appreciated. \"\n_____________________\nAny substance that alters your experience can be habit-forming, but CBD on its own is not considered addictive. In fact, one of the least understood benefits of CBD oil is its possible effectiveness in treating symptoms associated with alcohol and drug addiction.\n\nIt is common, over time, to require more CBD to achieve the desired effect as your body develops a tolerance to the cannabinoid. This is particularly true for new consumers.\n\nKevin P.\n_____________________\nHi there!\nThere is absolutely no potential of developing an addiction to cannabis when using such a low THC-concentration-containing product, such as the 20:1 tincture you and your husband have been using. CBD has no addictive potential; heavy and frequent use of THC may cause a psychological dependence, but not physical dependence, as alcohol,  benzodiazepines and opiates can cause. You and your husband are not even on the map of those engaged in heavy THC use. \n\nAlso, five drops of that tincture likely has between 0.1mg and 0.3mg of THC, which would be imperceptible for most likely everyone. Many don't even notice 3mg.  Also, you can/should be taking the oil on an as needed basis. Taking the oil once per day would not provide relief for more than 6 hours at the most. I usually recommend taking the oil at least twice per day. Also, most should at least 10 drops of a 20:1 tincture/dose, as 5 drops likely contains less than 3mg of CBD, and functionally, zero THC. \n\nSince it seems your husband has difficulty sleeping due to more noticeable pain in the evening, an oil with a higher THC concentration would likely be more beneficial. In general, after learning more about the patient's situation, I would recommend a 1:1 or 2:1 oil if THC is acceptable to the patient. I recommend starting no higher than 2.5mg of THC per dose. Also, 1:1 is, by far, the most studied ratio, including in studies regarding pain issues. For sleep, THC is what causes sedation.\n\ndrkim\n_____________________\nSo, for example, if we wanted to keep the CBD dosage at 10mg/dose, we would choose the ratio of the product that provides the amount of THC that is acceptable to the patient. Many patients want no perceptible psychoactivity during the day, while some psychoactivity during the evening is acceptable. In this situation, many would use a\nhigher ratio during the day, such as\n10:1, which would provide 10mg of CBD and 1mg of THC. Most patients do not perceive psychoactivity when taking 1mg, or less of THC \n\nThen as a sleep aid, a more balanced ratio, such as 1:1, which would provide 10mg of CBD, and 10mg of THC. 10mg is considered a \"standard dose.\" Most new patients report 10mg of THC to be moderately to extremely psychoactive. So, when starting, it's always a good idea to start low, and go slow.   In general, 2.5mgs of THC would be a good \"test dose.\" 2:1 is also a popular evening ratio (10mg CBD, 5mg THC). \n\nRatios of between 10:1 and 30:1 are rarely psychoactive, so this ratio-range would be a good choice for most when psychoactivity is to be avoided, such as during the daytime, or if the patient prefers to avoid any psychoactivity. \n\nRatios of between 4:1 and 8:1 are considered mid-range ratios. In general, products in this range would cause mild psychoactivity, noticeable anxiety relief and a boosted mood, without feeling \"high\". \n\n\ndrkim\n_____________________\n2:1 and 1:1 are more balanced ratios. In general, this range provides the most pain relief and is the better choice for sleep issues. \n\nOils:\n1. Place the oil under your tongue.\n2. Use your tongue to gently “paint” the tincture around your inner cheeks\n3. Wait 60 to 90 seconds before swallowing.\nEffects should peak in about 15 minutes, and should last between 2 to 4 hours \n\nEDIBLES:\nWait at least 1 hour to gauge efficacy. When you are on an empty stomach, peak effect is reached in about one hour. However, if you have had a large meal, especially a fatty meal, it can take up to two hours to reach peak effect. Effects should last between 4 to 10 hours. \n\nWhen choosing products, make sure that the product label specifies the amount of CBD and/or THC per drop or dropper-full. Many products simply state the total amount of CBD and/or THC, which leads to unnecessary confusion. \n\nI hope this helps!\n\n\ndrkim","image":null}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12326-markdown","title":"I’m having a kidney transplant in early February. So a physician would weigh risks vs benefits in order to make an informed recommendation. \n\nThe amount of CBD used could also factor into the decision, as very high amounts may alter how your body metabolizes many agents used during general anesthesia, and can also reduce your body's ability to form blood clots. For these reasons, and many more, you should always be forthright with your surgeon, and especially with your anesthesiologist. However, unless a very high amount of CBD is used, as previously mentioned, the main consideration would likely be the prevention of respiratory complications, both during and after surgery.\n\nIn order to evaluate your specific case properly, I advise that you consult with a physician. About 140 Terpenoids have been identified in Cannabis plants. Some of them include Myrcene, Limonene, Pinene, etc. They give cannabis there different flavours and tastes.
