About 40 million Americans are thought to suffer from some type of [anxiety disorder](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/anxiety/symptoms-causes/syc-20350961); that’s a lot! And it’s completely normal to get anxious, but some people get stuck when it comes to how to deal with the issue. \n\nFor many, it can be embarrassing to seek help for anxiety, and for others, it can be hard to know where to look for help or where to start. Some people who experience anxiety have found that consuming cannabidiol, also known as **CBD**, effectively relieves anxious thoughts.\n \n[CBD](https://hellomd.com/tag/cbd/) is a marijuana cannabinoid that doesn’t produce a head high like the other famous cannabinoid THC. But CBD has been shown to help temper anxiety. \nFor example, in a [study done in 2011](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3079847/), a group of people suffering from social anxiety took either CBD or a placebo before a test. The subjects who consumed CBD felt less anxious, and their physiological signs of anxiety decreased compared to that of the placebo group. \n\n[CBD promotes neurogenesis](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9472392/) which can have a calming effect on people leading to a decrease in anxiety. Most people don’t understand the difference between using marijuana with THC versus only using cannabis with CBD in it. THC products can have a tendency to put people’s minds into overdrive and paranoia, depending on the person. On the other hand, CBD doesn’t make consumers feel high like THC does.\n \nIn general terms, CBD interacts with the [endocannabinoid systems](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) (ECS). This is a system of receptors found in most places in the body. The RCS regulates various conditions and body processes, including anxiety. CBD also interacts with the serotonin receptors in the brain; lack of serotonin can often be the principal cause of anxiety. CBD acts similarly to prescribed SSRIs, blocking the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain. This makes serotonin more available in the synaptic space, increasing serotonin signaling, resulting in a happier and more stress-free mood. \n\nAnother way CBD induces a calming effect on the mind and body is because it blocks an enzyme called FAAH, or fatty acid amide hydrolase, which lowers the neurotransmitter and endocannabinoid called anandamide. [Anandamide](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anandamide) is also known as the bliss molecule because it imparts feelings of pleasure to the rest of your body. So, because CBD blocks FAAH, it boosts the levels of the “bliss molecule,” which in turn lowers anxiety levels. \n \nTaylor C.\n\n__________________________________\n\n![Untitledval113.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval113_348d315dc0.png)\n\nPrescription medication is often given to people with chronic stress or anxiety. The main issue with [SSRIs](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/depression/in-depth/ssris/art-20044825) is that they can leave patients feeling emotionally numb and can also be highly addictive. But according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, “[CBD has shown therapeutic efficacy](https://archives.drugabuse.gov/testimonies/2015/biology-potential-therapeutic-effects-cannabidiol) in a range of animal models of anxiety and stress, reducing both behavioral and physiological measures of stress and anxiety.”\n \nResearch has also shown that regular use of cannabis isn’t associated with toxicity, so you can use CBD products as much as you please to ease your anxiety. But, before starting the use of medical cannabis, it is always important to consult your doctor to make sure it’s a safe choice for you. \n\nCBD has a leg up on SSRIs because researchers have noted that antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects of CBD work much faster than SSRIs. This is because CBD affects the serotonin in your brain at a more rapid pace than traditional SSRI medications. Additionally, CBD has been rated by the world health organization as safe, generally well-tolerated, and without the potential for abuse or dependence.\n\nGlenna R.\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1,"src":"/static/c357e466e50fedf6741e4fd615eeff0e/ee604/e9cce237633398577a7258e5cd62d519.png","srcSet":"/static/c357e466e50fedf6741e4fd615eeff0e/69585/e9cce237633398577a7258e5cd62d519.png 200w,\n/static/c357e466e50fedf6741e4fd615eeff0e/497c6/e9cce237633398577a7258e5cd62d519.png 400w,\n/static/c357e466e50fedf6741e4fd615eeff0e/ee604/e9cce237633398577a7258e5cd62d519.png 800w,\n/static/c357e466e50fedf6741e4fd615eeff0e/f3583/e9cce237633398577a7258e5cd62d519.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/c357e466e50fedf6741e4fd615eeff0e/58556/e9cce237633398577a7258e5cd62d519.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/c357e466e50fedf6741e4fd615eeff0e/61e93/e9cce237633398577a7258e5cd62d519.webp 200w,\n/static/c357e466e50fedf6741e4fd615eeff0e/1f5c5/e9cce237633398577a7258e5cd62d519.webp 400w,\n/static/c357e466e50fedf6741e4fd615eeff0e/58556/e9cce237633398577a7258e5cd62d519.webp 800w,\n/static/c357e466e50fedf6741e4fd615eeff0e/99238/e9cce237633398577a7258e5cd62d519.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12609-markdown","title":"Which is better to help with anxiety, THC or CBD?","slug":"which-is-better-to-help-with-anxiety-thc-or-cbd","content":"**“I’m a long time user of THC products, but due to the pandemic, have found myself more anxious than normal. It is a potent anxiolytic and is very effective in reducing anxiety. **Tetrahydrocannabinol** or [THC](https://hellomd.com/tag/thc/) can reduce anxiety when taken in low doses. However, it can exacerbate anxiety at high doses and cause panic attacks depending on the consumer. Every person responds differently to cannabis, and what a high dose is to one person, it may not be to another.\n\nWhen taking a closer look at medical studies, it is evident that the chemical makeup of Cannabidiol is the primary cannabinoid and ingredient which [treats anxiety effectively](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/). While a healthy ratio of CBD to THC can effectively treat anxiety, too much THC in an anxious person can lead to feelings of paranoia. Alternatively, CBD has the opposite effect. Studies have shown that CBD can, on its own, lower, and in certain circumstances, eliminate anxiety. \n\nScientists believe that CBD works to reduce anxiety because of how it interacts with the serotonin receptors in the brain. CBD blocks the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, making serotonin more available in the synaptic space increasing serotonin signaling. \n\nWith all this being said, for those looking to remedy anxiety disorders with cannabis, your treatment will rely more heavily on your dosing and less on the specifics of the strain. Using cannabis is highly individual, so it is essential to first experiment with some trial and error to discover your perfect dose. \n \nDavid T.\n\n__________________________________ \n\n![Untitledval108.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval108_46242e6f55.png)\n \nThose looking to use medical marijuana to treat anxiety should be in the market for strains with higher levels of CBD; this can be a flower, tincture, vape pen, or edible. For those just beginning their medical cannabis journey, a CBD-dominant tincture or hybrid strain is highly recommended. Finding your proper dose can be done quickly by experimenting with ratios, starting with a very high [CBD:THC ratio](https://hellomd.com/articles/quick-guide-to-finding-your-ideal-cbd-to-thc-ratio) such as 30:1 or 10:1. Take a small dose and titrate up as necessary.\n\nWhen treating anxiety with cannabis, your best bet is a low dose of a high CBD strain or a hybrid strain with higher CBD levels. If you’re looking for immediate relief from anxiety from something like an anxiety attack, vaping CBD oil may be a good idea as the effects kick in almost automatically. However, suppose you want a cannabis product that will allow you to maintain a steady flow of relief throughout the day. In that case, ingesting CBD sublingually or orally at regular intervals may be a better option. \n\nSo, while a few puffs of a CBD vape pen may provide immediate anxiety relief, a better long-term solution would be allowing CBD to build up in your system through consistent CBD ingestion. [VerIlife]((https://www.verilife.com/what-is-marijuana/what-products-are-right-for-me).) gives a great explanation of how to find your correct dosing and correct cannabis products.\n\nOverall, when treating anxiety with cannabis, CBD is most often the better option. But, again, every person is different, and for some, THC may be more stress-relieving than CBD. If you’re just starting the use of cannabis for anxiety, it is recommended that you start with CBD over THC.\n\nAnne E.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1,"src":"/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/ee604/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.png","srcSet":"/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/69585/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.png 200w,\n/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/497c6/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.png 400w,\n/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/ee604/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.png 800w,\n/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/f3583/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/58556/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/61e93/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.webp 200w,\n/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/1f5c5/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.webp 400w,\n/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/58556/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.webp 800w,\n/static/223e10ef0d2dbd3599a6bcdfb3475b56/99238/f74d0f40c726fced13de6df1856eadfb.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Question_12608-markdown","title":"What are the best cannabis strains for anxiety? These names are scattered all around the cannabis world, so chances are you’ve heard of them. With that being said, understanding the differences between the three and their strengths can sometimes be challenging. If you find yourself unsure of what these terms mean, don’t worry, you’re not alone. \nUnderstanding the differences between **Indica**, **Hybrid**, and **Sativa** can help you navigate the many different strains of cannabis and the varying effects each produces.\n\n[Indica](https://hellomd.com/tag/indica/) is traditionally recommended for nighttime use, as its sedative and sleepy effects can leave you feeling tired and ready for bed. With that being said, some people find Indica to be relaxing during the day as well. Indica is most known for its “body high” and is typically helpful with anxiety, chronic pain, chronic tension, and sleep disorders.\n\n[Sativa](https://hellomd.ca/tag/sativa) strains are far from a sedative; therefore, they are usually recommended for daytime use as Sativa is energizing and tends to have noticeable effects on mental activity. Sativa can promote focus and creativity or sometimes leave your mind hazy depending on the strain. Like Indica, Sativa provides relief from pain and anxiety but can also be the source of anxiety for users who are extra sensitive to Sativa's effects.\n\n[Hybrid](https://hellomd.com/tag/hybrid/) strains usually apply to marijuana strains that have characteristics of both Indica and Sativa. This means that Hybrid strains can vary more dramatically because of all the possible combinations of characteristics. Many Hybrids have a grounding effect, neither sedative nor energetic, but instead helps maintain balanced energy. For these reasons, Hybrids are an excellent choice for either daytime or nighttime use. Those who use Hybrids generally prefer them for pain and anxiety relief as well as for flexibility between day and nighttime use. \n\nJohn S.\n_____________________________________________________________\n\n![Untitledval105.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitledval105_a7024478dd.png)\n \nThere really isn’t one strain that is better than the other as Indica, Hybrid, and Sativa all have calming properties that can help relieve anxiety symptoms. Every user will have a different reaction to varying strains. You know your body better than anyone else and what works best to [treat your anxiety](https://adai.uw.edu/pubs/pdf/2017mjanxiety.pdf) is up to you.\n \nChoosing the best strain for your individual anxiety needs depends on what kind of treatment you’re looking for. If you’re looking to be relaxed, a Sativa dominant strain with high levels of CBD and lower levels of THC is highly recommended. A great example is [ACDC](https://hellomd.ca/strains/acdc), which has a 20:1 CBD to THC ratio. ACDC is highly effective at reducing anxiety, with little to no psychoactivity due to its high ratio of CBD to THC. Users have reported feeling relaxed and happy when they consume this strain. You can consume ACDC through smoking flower, teas, capsules, or tinctures and this strain is common and available at most dispensaries.\n\nIf you’re looking for a hybrid strain, [Canna-Tsu](https://hellomd.com/strains/canna-tsu) is a mix of Cannatonic and Sour Tsunami and is known for its higher levels of CBD. That said, it has a 1:1 ratio of CBD and THC. Canna-Tsu is said to produce calming effects and mental clarity and has been shown to be very effective in reducing anxiety levels. An added bonus of this strain is its anti-inflammatory benefits. Canna-Tsu can be used at any time of the day as its balanced ratio won’t make you too tired or too wired.\n\nFor those who have experimented with reducing anxiety through cannabis and have found that their needs are met through Indica strains, [Haoma](https://hellomd.com/strains/haoma) is a great option. Haoma is a 70% Indica strain that has calming and stress-relieving effects.
