Over the past eight years, much discussion—and debate—has flowed online, around the water cooler and over dinner at home as to who’s related to whom, what army will prevail and why Cersei won’t just die already.\n\nAnd so, it’s with a heavy heart that fans head into the series finale this weekend. We all know that this is the end of a fantastic era in television. No more nail-biting, on-the-edge-of-your-seat Sundays with Jon Snow, Arya Stark and the mother of dragons.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nFolks are going to have to find a way to fill the empty void that GoT once occupied. Cue tears and sniffles here. OK, OK. It’s not over yet. We’ve got one more thrilling episode to watch before the fat lady sings. So, let’s make it the best damn viewing party—of one or many—ever.\n\nHow can we do that? With cannabis, of course. HelloMD’s GoT-obsessed team members have come up with their favorite marijuana strains to enhance this Sunday’s series closer. And they give their predictions for who will take the iron throne.\n\n### 1. Granddaddy Purple Cannabis Strain\n\n![Granddaddy Purple cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5abd6050f24d1300077ccba6-827dc995-af79-4cb2-81a3-c78d526915a8/original.jpg)\n\n**Danielle L., health and wellness writer:** “For the Game of Thrones finale, I’ll go with Granddaddy Purple since it’s a mellow cannabis strain that tends to enhance every situation. Also, this strain tends to make me happy and sleepy—two things I don’t anticipate being at the end of this series.\n\n“I doubt I’ll be happy for two reasons: 1) I can’t believe that it’s over; and 2) in all of the interviews I’ve read or seen with George R.R. Martin, he’s stated that fans probably won’t be happy about the ending, but it’ll be somewhat acceptable.\n\n“For predictions on who'll take the iron throne, I’m tempted to say no one. But I’ll go with Sansa, because even if Daenerys burns King’s Landing to the ground, Sansa will hopefully be chillin’ and smirking up north. Plus, at this point she's the most capable politician.”\n\n### 2. Gelato Cannabis Strain\n\n![Gelato cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-3dcb5658-62dd-4908-827a-ee49973b1281/original.png)\n\n**Ryan G., customer service lead:** “This final season of GoT has been really stressful. So, before every episode, I consume Gelato #42 to help calm my nerves. It’s a perfect hybrid for shows like this, because it eases my anxiety, but keeps me alert enough to catch anything that may be a foreshadowing.\n\n“I also enjoy Gelato, because it has a sweeter sorbet-like taste, which makes me feel like I’m sipping some fine wine with Tyrion before he storms King’s Landing with his sister Daenerys. Yes, that’s right. I said sister.\n \n“I think that Jon Snow will give up the iron throne to go live with the Wildlings in the north. Sansa will be the one to take the iron throne and rule with Tyrion as her hand. I also think that Tyrion will be revealed as a Targaryen, which makes him the third head of the dragon. \n\n“Unfortunately, Dany won’t make it, because her lust for power will drive her crazy like her late father, the mad king. ... It makes me sad, but no one else will make it to the end to be able to see Cersei dethroned.”\n \n### 3. Jillybean Cannabis Strain\n\n![Jillybean cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-98489ae1-8cc6-4c55-9e9b-7e64dd93fd8e/original.png)\n\n**Gabby B., content manager:** “We’re hosting a potluck viewing party for the GoT finale. Since I’ll be with friends, I want to offer around a cannabis strain that everyone will like and that’s good for socializing in a group. So, I’ll likely have some Jillybean on hand. \n\n“Jillybean is great when you have a group with varying tolerance levels, as the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is typically somewhere around 13–18%, so it won’t make my cannabis newbie friends feel racy or paranoid.\n\n“But my friends who are seasoned marijuana consumers will also enjoy themselves. Jillybean is uplifting yet mellow, so I think it'll be perfect when watching and discussing the show with others, and will have people feeling social but relaxed.\n \n“I also love that Jillybean’s flavor profile and aroma are citrusy—limonene is my favorite cannabis terpene. It makes me feel happy, and I like that it’s been shown to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, too. \n \n“As for who I think will win the throne, I think Jon Snow will get over his shock about his lover being his aunt, and he and Daenerys will get married and rule all seven kingdoms together.”\n\n### 4. Lamb’s Bread Cannabis Strain\n\n![Lamb’s Bread cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-7368e5ac-81f8-4a4f-9711-560813918e8f/original.png)\n\n**Sonya T., social media manager:** “I think I’ll go with Lamb’s Bread for the GoT finale. It’s my favorite strain for any occasion; it’s both calming and keeps me alert while being creatively engaged. GoT is one of those shows where anything can happen, and the writing and scenes are pretty intricate, so I like to stay aware with the least amount of anxiety possible.\n \n“As far as who will get the iron throne? Hmmm … I’m going with Jon Snow for this one. He’s level-headed and a great leader. Although, I want it to be Arya, my personal fave, I think Jon is the most equipped for it and the most favored among the people.”\n\n### 5. Blue Dream Cannabis Strain\n\n![Blue Dream cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-5d9f9467-bcbd-4314-b19e-f07ac22bdf50/original.png)\n\n**Miles A., editorial associate:** “Blue Dream would be my cannabis strain pick for the finale. With its balance of sativa and indica elements, Blue Dream imparts calming effects that are ideal for easing you through the roller coaster finale, while the body high from this hybrid will help get folks into the scene that unfolds, specifically when Sansa Stark finally takes her place on the iron throne. \n\n“After years of having a front row seat to see how the game is played from Westeros’ most wicked schemers, Cersei Lannister and Littlefinger, Sansa is primed and ready. I think Sansa’s the most fit to rule, because she’s the most practical and rational. Case in point, she made sure Winterfell had enough food supplies for its army before having to fight the undead, and she tried to make sure that army got enough rest before starting the long trek to the capital. \n\n“With Brienne to lead her queensguard and the backing of the North, the Vale and Riverrun, Sansa can swoop in once all of the carnage at King’s Landing has come to an end, uniting the rest of the seven kingdoms under the lady of Winterfell’s rule.”\n\nPhoto credit: Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. It can manifest in acts such as washing hands dozens of times or checking things repeatedly. OCD affects over two million Americans, with symptoms appearing in people as young as 14 years of age.\n\nDoctors typically turn to various combinations of medications and therapy to help treat OCD. But some research shows that cannabidiol (CBD) can relieve the symptoms of OCD without the risks and side effects of standard pharmaceuticals.\n\n### What Is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?\n\n[OCD falls into a large group of mental health conditions](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd/index.shtml) generally called anxiety disorders. This is because they all involve abnormal activity in the brain’s limbic system and amygdala, which is home to our fear response. \n\nOCD is characterized by two kinds of symptoms that relate to fear and anxiety: \n\n* Uncontrollable thoughts \n* Compulsive actions \n\nPeople with OCD experience negative, frightening thoughts that often center on issues such as religion, violence and sex. They feel that they can’t control these thoughts, and they fear they may act on them. \n\nPeople with OCD are also gripped by compulsive behaviors—things they believe they must do in order to get relief from anxiety and to feel safe. OCD behaviors can include things like:\n\n* Constant, repetitive hand washing\n* Cleaning things over and over, even if they’re already clean\n* Counting money frequently\n* Repeatedly checking things like whether doors are locked, or appliances are turned off\n* Tics—repetitive movements or sounds, such as blinking, sniffing or nodding\n\nPeople with OCD often set an arbitrary number of times an action must be repeated, or a particular set of criteria, in order to relieve the anxiety. \n\nFor example, someone may think that they have to wash their hands exactly 10 times in order to feel clean. Or they may feel like they must arrange their desk with everything in a particular spot in order to feel comfortable to work. \n\nIf anything happens to interfere with these rituals, the person with OCD can feel extreme anxiety and distress.\n\nOCD affects people differently, and for some, the symptoms are only mildly annoying. For others, though, OCD has a powerful effect on all aspects of life, making it difficult, if not impossible, to hold down a job, make friends or simply relax. \n\nWe don’t have a deep understanding of what causes OCD. But we do know that OCD:\n\n* Is more common among people who’ve experienced trauma such as abuse or sexual assault \n* May possess a genetic component, since it can run in families \n* Symptoms often appear in the teen and young adult years, although they can also develop in older people \n* Affects both men and women equally \n* Is seen in people who also have other mental health conditions\n\nScientists know that many people with OCD appear to have abnormalities in certain areas of the brain, including the hippocampus and amygdala. OCD sufferers also seem to have differences in brain chemistry, including low expression of mood-regulating neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin. \n\nThis is why doctors frequently prescribe medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and certain antidepressant medications for OCD symptoms. But these drugs also have a number of side effects and risks, such as:\n\n* Insomnia\n* Blurred vision\n* Nervousness\n* Diarrhea \n\nA large body of research indicates that CBD appears to be helpful in relieving symptoms of anxiety, depression and other mood disorders without these risks.\n\n### How CBD Works in the Body to Help Ease Anxiety & Other Mood Disorders\n\nCBD is one of the most abundant compounds in cannabis. It doesn’t cause a consumer to heel high like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can, and it plays a powerful role in supporting the body’s systems for self-regulation and homeostasis, or balance. \n\nThe driving force behind many of these regulatory systems is the endocannabinoid system (ECS). \n\nThe ECS is a rich network of receptors found throughout the body and brain. Endocannabinoids that the body produces, as well as cannabinoids from the cannabis plant interact with ECS receptors. There are two kinds of ECS receptors: CB1 and CB2. THC interacts directly with the CB1 receptor. \n\nBut CBD doesn’t necessarily activate either of the ECS receptors directly. What it appears to do, though, is act on a variety of other processes in the body to help the ECS [support the healthy functioning of the immune system, cognitive processes and mood](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28268256).\n\nRELATED: [UNDERSTANDING HOW CBD CAN CALM YOUR ANXIETY](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-taking-cbd-daily-can-help-reduce-your-anxiety/)\n\nFor example, serotonin is an important neurotransmitter for regulating mood—so much so that it’s been called the feel-good chemical. CBD can activate serotonin receptors to trigger the same effects, which promote feelings of calmness and relaxation.\n\nThe brain also produces calming chemicals such as gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA), to damp down the feelings that chemicals like cortisol and norepinephrine trigger, such as:\n\n* Fear\n* Excitement\n* Anger\n\nResearch shows that CBD promotes the expression of GABA, further helping reduce stress and anxiety.\n\nCBD also supports the production of anandamide, one of the body’s natural endocannabinoids. [Anandamide promotes feelings of well-being and calmness](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a949d06f24d1300077ccb66/eating-anandamide-the-bliss-molecule). \n\nBut another chemical called FAAH can break anandamide down quickly in the brain. CBD slows the expression of FAAH, so that more anandamide remains available to the brain, helping express these feelings of calm and bliss. \n\nThese effects help explain why [CBD can be an effective treatment for mood disorders such as anxiety and depression](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28061971)—and why it can help ease the symptoms of OCD as well.\n\n ### 2015 Study Showed CBD Helped Reduce OCD Symptoms \n\nResearch specifically related to the use of CBD for OCD is limited. The clearest connection comes from a 2015 study published in the journal _Neurotherapeutics_, which reports on the use of CBD in the treatment of a variety of anxiety related disorders, including OCD. The [researchers concluded that CBD helped relieve the symptoms of OCD](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/) and other disorders like PTSD and social anxiety disorder. \n\nLike other anxiety disorders, OCD arises from disturbances in the brain’s limbic system. And research now indicates that CBD can help restore balance in this system, because of its demonstrated ability to:\n\n* Moderate fear responses\n* Reduce stress \n* Calm anxiety \n\nExperts say that OCD, like many mood disorders, can’t be cured. But CBD in all its forms may provide relief from its stressful symptoms, without the side effects of standard anxiety medications. \n\nPhoto credit: Avesun/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? No matter your age, where you live or what you do for a living, chances are you’ve experienced some type of anxiety—from a short-lived episode before a big event (hello wedding day or big presentation at work) to a chronic feeling that’s always there in the background. \n\nAccording to a 2018 survey by the American Psychiatric Association, [40% of Americans felt more anxious than they did the year before](http://time.com/5269371/americans-anxiety-poll/). And about 40 million Americans are thought to suffer from some type of anxiety disorder. \n\nFor many, it can be embarrassing to seek help for anxiety. For others, it’s hard to know where to look for help. Some folks have found that consuming cannabidiol (CBD) provides an effective respite from anxious thoughts. \n\nCBD is a marijuana cannabinoid that doesn’t produce a head high like the other famous cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), can. But it has been shown to help temper anxiety. \n\nFor example, in a small study from 2011, a group of [people with social anxiety disorder took either CBD or a placebo before a test](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3079847/). The subjects who consumed CBD felt less anxious and their physiological signs of anxiety, like elevated blood pressure and heart rate, decreased compared to that of the placebo group. \n\nIf you’re interested in taking CBD to help calm anxiety, check out our three most popular Q&As about CBD for anxiety. Is there any evidence that CBD helps with anxiety and what way is best for me to consume it?\n**_I don’t live in a legal marijuana state, but I have terrible anxiety and have heard that CBD derived from the hemp plant may be something I can try._**\n\nAnswer: [@BartSmart](https://www.hellolift.com/people/5817af1a97ed67000a00143c/bartsmart) In my opinion, it wouldn't hurt to try CBD that’s derived from the hemp plant. The difference between hemp-derived CBD and cannabis-derived CBD is the amount of THC in the plant.\n\nI have heard success with vaporizing CBD for quickest relief during an anxiety attack, while using CBD edibles regularly to maintain homeostasis, or a balance in one's mind and body.\n\nCBD promotes neurogenesis which can have a calming effect on people leading to a decrease of anxiety for some.\n\nCBD comes from agriculturally derived hemp and you would just want to make sure that your hemp is responsibly sourced.\n\nWe at HelloMD have heard of many testimonials about CBD helping people deal with their anxiety.\n\n### Q. What is a good starting dose of CBD oil for anxiety and pain relief?\n**_I have some softgels and tincture._** \n\nAnswer: [@helenanp](https://www.hellolift.com/people/59820d531d86bf357ccec0d3/helenanp) The right amount of CBD oil will vary from person to person. We each have a unique endocannabinoid system, so some people will require less, and others will require more. \n\nIt’s best to start with a low dosage and then slightly raise this dosage until you receive the desired result. I would start with a drop of CBD oil a day and see how it affects you. Every 2–3 weeks I would increase by an additional drop. Remember to space the drops throughout the day. \n\nContinue to increase by a drop every 2–3 weeks until your symptoms decrease. You need to experiment a little to see what dosage is best for you.\n\n### Q. It’s one thing to occasionally avoid interactions with others. However, an intense, persistent fear of being judged by others is known as [social anxiety disorder](https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/social-anxiety-disorder-more-than-just-shyness/index.shtml). \n\nIn the United States, [15 million adults suffer from this type of anxiety](https://adaa.org/about-adaa/press-room/facts-statistics). And yet less than 37% of those suffering seek out treatment. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nAlthough social anxiety is treatable, many doctors rely on [medications like Zoloft and Prozac to treat their patients](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/176891.php). That said, it can take up to three months on these drugs before seeing any improvement. And these medications can come with scary side effects like:\n\n* Insomnia\n* Lethargy\n* Diarrhea\n* Dizziness\n* Tremors\n\n### The Science Behind Why Marijuana Can Ease Anxiety\n\nMeanwhile, in a survey of data from Strainprint, an app for cannabis consumers to track strains, doses and symptoms, there was [a perceived 58% reduction in anxiety and stress following cannabis use](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165032718303100?via%3Dihub). For these consumers, even two puffs of cannabis were sufficient in reducing ratings of depression and anxiety. \n\nWe asked HelloMD physician Dr. Richard Kim how cannabis works to reduce social anxiety.\n\n“Cannabis promotes sociability by making us feel happy and relaxed. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) promotes happiness primarily by binding to the CB1 receptor in the brain, which responds by releasing the neurotransmitter dopamine. The increased dopamine signals the pleasure center of the brain: the mesolimbic pathway.”\n\nDr. Kim also noted that cannabidiol (CBD) can also help with anxiety, saying “CBD (cannabidiol) can increase serotonin signaling at the 5-HT1A receptor—the same neurotransmitter and receptor that SSRIs like Prozac influence.”\n\nDr. Kim cautions, however, that too much THC can actually have the opposite effect. “Too much THC can increase anxiety, because THC binds the CB1 receptor in three areas of the brain which affect anxiety: the amygdala, prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus—each with their own dose-response relationship to THC.”\n\nWhen it comes to cannabis, everyone responds differently. While some people can consume cannabis without anxiety, some people can unintentionally experience marijuana-induced anxiety. It really comes down to a bit of trial and error to see what cannabis strain works for you.\n\nThat said, we asked some HelloMD staff members, which marijuana strains help them feel more at ease in social settings. \n \n### 1. ACDC \n\n**Chris B., partner development associate**, prefers the light effects of ACDC: “My favorite strain to alleviate social anxiety is ACDC, a classic high-CBD strain, because it has a nice calming effect. ACDC offers full-body relaxation without getting too heady or increasing paranoia, which can worsen your anxiety. I find ACDC to be a good strain for light effects, so I can use it without overconsuming. Then I don’t worry about being too elevated in public. \n\n“When I’m at a large gathering, I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the quantity of people, especially if I’m in a crowd of new people that I’m not quite as comfortable with. Any time that feeling kicks in, ACDC can bring me back to that relaxed feeling without the cloudiness that accompanies certain high-THC strains. I’m still very clear-minded, and I can socialize easily.”\n\n### 2. Jack Herer \n\n** Melissa N., office manager**, tells us why Jack Herer is her go-to marijuana strain when she’s feeling anxious at a party: “To reduce social anxiety, I enjoy sativa-dominant Jack Herer. Sativa strains are generally uplifting, but some of them are heavy-headed. Jack Herer is more of a clear-headed high. It makes me feel less paranoid, and that makes it easier for me to be social. \n\n“It’s a great strain for any time you’re feeling anxious. I like it if I’m going to a party or even in the morning. If I’m too tired, it's a good option to wake up and get the day started, because it provides good energy. \n\n“I’d recommend Jack Herer especially for people who are new to cannabis, because it’s an uplifting sativa. It doesn’t have that sluggish feeling like some strains do. For me, there’s less paranoia, so it’s great for newbies. But advanced consumers love it, too.”\n\n### 3. Skywalker OG \n\n**Ryan G., customer service manager**, says Skywalker OG is his pick for when he has to do any public speaking: “I really like Skywalker OG to help me with social anxiety. I tend to overthink a lot, so having a strain that provides full-body effects really helps me. \n\n“I can get really anxious when I'm speaking in front of large crowds or even just a small group of people. I feel I'm very socially awkward and that makes me very self-conscious, so having an indica-dominant strain like Skywalker OG helps quiet those thoughts, and it puts me at ease.\n\n“Cannabis affects everybody differently, so it’s a good idea to start low and slow, and increase consumption as needed. But I’d suggest Skywalker OG, because it's not a super heavy indica that will make me feel lazy. This strain gives me energy, but at the same time reduces my self-consciousness, which helps alleviate my anxiety.”\n\n### 4. Wedding Cake \n\n** Bart S., customer service specialist**, says Wedding Cake tastes great and helps him start conversations without feeling self-conscious: \n\n“Recently, I've been enjoying Wedding Cake, an indica-dominant strain also known as Pink Cookies. I think it's a very good strain for social situations because it makes me feel happy and relaxed. It's also energizing so it doesn't make me anxious, but it gives me the motivation to strike up a conversation. \n\n“Sometimes I feel anxious before social situations like a big party or an event with large amounts of people. Wedding Cake helps to relieve that anxiety so once I arrive I can be relaxed, talking and happy. \n\n“I would recommend Wedding Cake because it’s a great tasting strain, but it also helps me break the ice at a party or social gathering. It helps me start talking and go with the flow so I’m no longer worried about the situation that I’m in.”\n\n### 5. 24 Karat Gold \n\n** Kevin P., customer service specialist**, says 24 Karat Gold helps him be present in conversations with others: “My favorite strain to reduce social anxiety is called 24 Karat Gold, otherwise known as Kosher Tangie. It’s a cross between indica strain Kosher Kush and sativa strain Tangie. \n\n“Since 24 Karat Gold is a hybrid, it doesn't get me too in my head or too sleepy. Although technically a 60/40 indica-dominant hybrid, it calms me down physically, so I don't talk as much with my hands. I'm also not as nervous, and it frees my mind up for really interesting conversation.\n\n“It gives a really classic high feeling, where I feel like I could just sit around and talk to people for a really long time—that's a big part of being social for me. I find it's appropriate to consume anytime I'll be around other people. \n\n“With so many different strains of marijuana out there, I like the ones that alleviate my social anxiety, but also taste great. The nice thing about 24 Karat Gold is it has really sweet citrus notes from Tangie and a little bit of pineyness from the Kosher Kush, so it always tastes really fresh. It feels like it cleanses my insides, and that psyches me up to get socializing.”\n\n### 6. Sunset Sherbet \n\n**Nik S., customer service specialist**, goes for indica-dominant Sunset Sherbet for the taste and physical effects: “To reduce my social anxiety, I like to go with Sunset Sherbet. Not only for the taste and effect, but because of the genetics: Sunset Sherbet is an indica-dominant strain descended from GSC.\n\n“If I’m in crowded areas or any place I'm not familiar with, but I still want to remain social and have a good time, Sunset Sherbet works for me. With Sunset Sherbet, I notice the physical stress being relieved, and as a result it makes the social anxiety vanish. That iffy feeling and any feelings of anxiousness disappear. Not only do I get the physical relaxation, but mentally I feel more like myself. I get much more uplifted, and I start to notice that it’s easier to open up around people.”\n\nPhoto credit: [Jens Johnsson](https://unsplash.com/@jens_johnsson)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. Besides helping to relax and calm, it also has anti-inflammatory properties and can help ease pain. \n\nCBD is found in marijuana, but it's also found in hemp. Hemp is just another variety of the marijuana plant that medical marijuana comes from. But it differs in one important way: Hemp only contains a tiny amount of THC (0.3% or less by law), and therefore doesn't impart any psychoactive effects.\n\nThat's why hemp can be legally grown and harvested across the U.S., and it's why products derived from hemp aren't bound by the same restrictions as those derived from marijuana. For the most part, hemp-derived CBD products are available to anyone, anywhere.\n\nHemp-derived CBD isn't a magic bullet, and what works for one person may not work for another. But if you're looking for a natural way to deal with stress, we think you should give these hemp-derived CBD products a try. \n\nPhoto credits: [Wildflower](https://www.instagram.com/p/BkiS3Rpl2hj/) (vape pen image), [Elixinol Japan](https://www.instagram.com/p/BnDBghsHxIw/) (hemp oil image) & [Vertly](https://www.instagram.com/p/BnW5VGChrgF/) (relief lotion image)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/83d56e9e45b24cffc1d54d69b03ce9c4/14b42/3d79ec043617d8b838c74ea85f579769.jpg","srcSet":"/static/83d56e9e45b24cffc1d54d69b03ce9c4/f836f/3d79ec043617d8b838c74ea85f579769.jpg 200w,\n/static/83d56e9e45b24cffc1d54d69b03ce9c4/2244e/3d79ec043617d8b838c74ea85f579769.jpg 400w,\n/static/83d56e9e45b24cffc1d54d69b03ce9c4/14b42/3d79ec043617d8b838c74ea85f579769.jpg 800w,\n/static/83d56e9e45b24cffc1d54d69b03ce9c4/47498/3d79ec043617d8b838c74ea85f579769.jpg 1200w,\n/static/83d56e9e45b24cffc1d54d69b03ce9c4/5d3d7/3d79ec043617d8b838c74ea85f579769.jpg 1206w","srcWebp":"/static/83d56e9e45b24cffc1d54d69b03ce9c4/58556/3d79ec043617d8b838c74ea85f579769.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/83d56e9e45b24cffc1d54d69b03ce9c4/61e93/3d79ec043617d8b838c74ea85f579769.webp 200w,\n/static/83d56e9e45b24cffc1d54d69b03ce9c4/1f5c5/3d79ec043617d8b838c74ea85f579769.webp 400w,\n/static/83d56e9e45b24cffc1d54d69b03ce9c4/58556/3d79ec043617d8b838c74ea85f579769.webp 800w,\n/static/83d56e9e45b24cffc1d54d69b03ce9c4/99238/3d79ec043617d8b838c74ea85f579769.webp 1200w,\n/static/83d56e9e45b24cffc1d54d69b03ce9c4/5c285/3d79ec043617d8b838c74ea85f579769.webp 1206w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2846-markdown","title":"6 Cannabis Strains & Products to Help You Relax","slug":"6-cannabis-strains-and-products-to-help-you-relax","content":"Looking to melt away your stress and anxiety with cannabis? Maybe they’re not eating with abandon like usual. Or maybe they can’t bring themselves to leave their bed for morning walkies. You know they may be ill, or maybe they’re stressed or anxious, but unfortunately you can’t ask them what’s wrong, and they can’t tell you where it hurts. It’s probably the most stressful part of being a fur mom or dad. \n\nA trip to the vet is sometimes in order, but as with us humans, many of the pharmaceuticals prescribed to animals come with a laundry list of side effects. Luckily, there’s a natural medicine that pet owners can turn to for some acute situations, as well as for preventative treatment. \n\nThat medicine is cannabis.\n\n“Wait a minute,” you may be thinking. “I’m not going to get my dog or cat stoned.” Of course, that’s not what we’re suggesting. There’s a way you can harness the benefits of the cannabis plant for your furry family member without any psychoactivity—and that’s with the use of hemp.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What Is Hemp?\n\nHemp is a variety of the cannabis plant, _Cannabis sativa_. Psychoactive recreational and medical marijuana products come from a version of the _Cannabis sativa_ plant that contains cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)—along with a battery of other cannabinoids and terpenes.\n\nBut hemp plants have almost exclusively CBD, the non-psychoactive cannabinoid. In fact, by law, hemp plants must only contain less than 0.3% THC, a negligible amount that doesn’t cause a head high. \n\n### CBD & Its Benefits\n\nSo, CBD products made from hemp won’t give the consumer a psychoactive experience, but they will be able to reap CBD’s benefits. The cannabinoid has been shown to help with:\n\n* Inflammation\n* Pain\n* Nausea and vomiting\n* High blood sugar \n* Anxiety\n* Stress \n* Epilepsy\n\nRELATED: [USING CBD TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR PET'S ANXIETY](https://hellomd.com/articles/using-cbd-to-take-care-of-your-pets-anxiety)\n\n### Is CBD OK for Animals?\n\nThe reason that so many humans find relief from a variety of health conditions with CBD is because the cannabinoid acts on the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a network of receptors that’s pretty much found in every part of the body. The ECS influences so many processes including:\n\n* Digestion\n* Pain\n* Inflammation\n* Hunger\n* Mood \n\nThe body makes endocannabinoids naturally that bind with the ECS receptors to affect these mechanisms. But sometimes the body doesn’t make enough of its own endocannabinoids. \n\nResearchers now think that an unbalanced ECS has a lot to do with many health problems. And a way to top up natural endocannabinoid levels and help balance the ECS is to supplement with cannabinoids from cannabis.\n\nSo, how does this relate to our pets’ health? Well, animals also have an ECS. This means that a sick animal could benefit from a balanced ECS, and can balance theirs using cannabis, too. \n\n### Why Should I Give My Pet Hemp-Derived CBD?\n\nIf you’re interested in treating your pet with cannabis, CBD is your best bet. As we’ve said, it’s non-psychoactive and can address a range of problems from anxiety to arthritis. And the easiest form of CBD to obtain, and the form you can be sure won’t give your pet a head high, is hemp-derived CBD. \n\nCBD made from hemp is available no matter what state you live in—even if there aren’t any medical marijuana laws on the books. Hemp CBD products formulated for humans will work fine for dogs or cats, but now some companies are making CBD products especially for pets.\n\nOne such company developing CBD products for animals is Holistic Hound. The company makes CBD dog treats in two different sizes, so you can choose the dose that’s right for your pup. The brand also produces a CBD-rich hemp oil. If your pet isn’t into crunchy treats, this oil can simply be drizzled onto their food or mixed with anything else they eat for easy medication.\n\nHolistic Hound says it gets feedback from pet owners that its products have helped:\n\n* Calm anxious dogs\n* Stop nighttime anxiety\n* Settle dogs down around strangers\n* Ease digestive distress due to Crohn’s disease \n* Relieve sore hips\n\n### Questions to Ask When Choosing Hemp CBD for Your Pet\n\n* **Where did the CBD come from?** Because hemp is largely unregulated, it’s very easy to purchase hemp-derived CBD that’s inferior in quality and has been extracted through dangerous means. \n\n> Substandard CBD won’t actually have too much of the cannabinoid in it and will therefore lack the benefits of CBD. Plus, [the hemp plant is what’s known as a bioacculumator](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-to-watch-out-for-when-buying-hemp-cbd-oil). This means that it absorbs chemicals from the soil and those chemicals are stored in the plant’s tissues. So, if the plant is farmed using any pesticides, they may show up in the final product. \n\n> Some questionable extraction methods could leave traces of harmful chemicals in the CBD, again something you don’t want your beloved pet ingesting.\n\n> When doing your research on hemp-derived CBD products for your pet, make sure the company sources its hemp from the United States or Europe. Steer clear of hemp grown in China and Indonesia, which is known for being less than healthy. \n\n* ** Was the CBD lab tested?** A quality company will have all of its products lab tested by a third party for purity. Most reputable companies will say on their product labels and website that their products are lab tested. They may even provide the lab results, too. \n\n* ** What’s the label say?** Just as if you were shopping for yourself, scrutinize the hemp CBD labels to make sure there’s nothing added that will harm your pet. Ingredients you have trouble pronouncing or that you’ve never heard of before can be an easy way to spot products that may not be the best choice. \n\nRight here in the HelloMD office, many of us have turned to CBD treats to help our pets live their best lives. In fact, co-founder Pamela Hadfield credits CBD for helping her dog, Desmond, ease his shoulder pain at 14 in his last year and a half of life. Others have turned to CBD to help their dogs get their appetite back, move better and calm down when it’s time to go in the car or when they have to stay home on their own.\n\nAnd really, you don’t have to wait until your pet is visibly sick to treat them with CBD. Many in the cannabis industry believe that humans should think of the cannabinoid as a vitamin or supplement, something you can take daily to boost your health and help prevent problems in the future. And the same can go for your cat or dog—CBD can be your pet’s ticket to maintaining good health for years to come. \n\nPhoto credit: [rawpixel.com](https://www.pexels.com/@rawpixel)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3605442176870748,"src":"/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/14b42/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg","srcSet":"/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/f836f/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg 200w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/2244e/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg 400w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/14b42/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg 800w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/47498/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg 1200w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/0e329/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg 1600w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/541f7/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.jpg 3685w","srcWebp":"/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/58556/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/61e93/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp 200w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/1f5c5/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp 400w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/58556/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp 800w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/99238/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp 1200w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/7c22d/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp 1600w,\n/static/2e283557c36e997941aeba5b9c5c528a/3726b/6490e35a6d7fbb1f50befe65efeb6ba5.webp 3685w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2767-markdown","title":"Using CBD to Take Care of Your Pet’s Anxiety","slug":"using-cbd-to-take-care-of-your-pets-anxiety","content":"Human beings aren’t the only ones who can suffer from anxiety: Your pet can get anxious, too. Dogs, cats and many other animals such as birds and horses experience anxiety. Maybe you’ve noticed this in your pet when you leave the house, take them for a car ride or have guests over. Many things can trigger anxiety, and it can be hard to treat both the symptoms and root causes. \n\nLuckily, cannabis has powerful anti-anxiety properties that may be able to help.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Types of Anxiety in Cats & Dogs\n\nPet anxiety generally falls into three types of categories:\n\n* General fearfulness\n* Noise sensitivity\n* Separation anxiety \n\nSeveral things can lead to or trigger anxiety in your dog or cat; some of the most common are:\n\n* Moving into a new home \n* Addition or removal of people or pets from your home \n* Past trauma \n* Lack of early socialization\n* Medical issues\n\nDogs or cats that tend to go through multiple homes are more likely to have anxiety issues. If your pooch or feline suffers from anxiety, having a consistent daily routine and a standard protocol for introducing your pet to new places, objects and people can be helpful. \n\n### Signs of Anxiety in Cats & Dogs \n\nDoes your dog or cat suffer from anxiety? Sometimes it’s obvious, and other times, it can be difficult to tell. Common signs of anxiety include:\n\n* Panting\n* Pacing\n* Whining, whimpering or excessive meowing\n* Hiding\n* Fidgeting or trembling\n* Obsessive licking\n* Destructive or aggressive behavior \n* Urinating or defecating in the wrong places\n\nSome less obvious signs are: \n\n* Lip licking\n* Air sniffing\n* Yawning \n* “Wet dog shake” \n\nAnxiety can also show up as physical symptoms such as: \n\n* Excessive shedding\n* Changes in appetite\n* Disruption of sleeping habits\n* Dilated pupils \n\nOf course, many of these symptoms can be due to other conditions like allergies, skin issues and endocrine disorders. Though mild to moderate anxiety is common in some animals, it can grow to serious proportions in some cases. If your pet’s anxiety is affecting either you or your pet’s quality of life, it’s time to pay a visit to your veterinarian. \n\n### Using Cannabis to Calm Your Pet’s Anxiety \n\nSimilar to humans, treatment for anxiety in dogs and cats usually involves antidepressants, selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and behavioral therapy. However, just like with humans, sometimes these methods fall short. This is where cannabidiol (CBD) can help. \n\nCBD helps with anxiety in humans, and it may be able to do the same thing for your kitty or K9—our furry friends also have endocannabinoid after all. \n\nThe endocannabinoid system is a network of receptors that’s located throughout the body; cannabis acts on this system to bring about therapeutic effects. Your pet also has this system, which is why many pet parents are turning to CBD to ease their pet’s anxiety, with great success. \n\n“[CBD] is a game changer as far as anything that I’ve ever seen in the 15 years of doing this,” says Heidi Hill, owner of Holistic Hound, a pet store in Berkeley, CA, that also has its own line of hemp-derived CBD products.\n\nShe says that customers tend to seek out her CBD products for anxiety, as well as inflammation and pain. And that the feedback she’s gotten is overwhelmingly positive. \n\n“I’m very happy with the CBD treats,” writes Mary, a customer using Heidi’s products for her dog, whose anxiety causes her to cry at night. “Both my dog and I are getting more sleep,” she adds. \n\n“Before, vet visits were very traumatic. After a couple of drops of CBD tincture, our cat was calm, responsive and stress free,” writes Roger, another satisfied customer. \n\nLooking through the long list of Heidi’s testimonials, it seems that CBD can be useful for many different types of anxiety, including separation anxiety and situational anxieties, like car rides or thunderstorms. However, it’s important to remember that some types of anxiety, especially those that can lead to aggressive behaviors, may require more treatment than CBD consumption alone. \n\nIf you’re thinking of using CBD to address your pet’s anxiety, you may want to consult a veterinarian who has experience with cannabis. However, be aware that, by law, vets can’t recommend CBD products in some states including California. And when figuring out your pet’s ideal dose, keep in mind that your pet’s endocannabinoid system is unique—just like yours. Therefore, start at a low dosage and slowly increase until you get the desired effect.\n\nPhoto credit: [Heather Miller](https://unsplash.com/@heathamilla)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3605442176870748,"src":"/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/14b42/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.jpg","srcSet":"/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/f836f/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.jpg 200w,\n/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/2244e/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.jpg 400w,\n/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/14b42/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.jpg 800w,\n/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/47498/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.jpg 1200w,\n/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/0e329/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.jpg 1600w,\n/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/8da0e/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.jpg 3512w","srcWebp":"/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/58556/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/61e93/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.webp 200w,\n/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/1f5c5/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.webp 400w,\n/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/58556/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.webp 800w,\n/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/99238/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.webp 1200w,\n/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/7c22d/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.webp 1600w,\n/static/c6b1852484a58d5e783843112ac73cca/2c070/37f1fc1bd707a60440b882218537fb88.webp 3512w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2728-markdown","title":"Make Your First Date a Good One With Cannabis","slug":"make-your-first-date-a-good-one-with-cannabis","content":"Thanks to Tinder, Bumble and every other dating app and website, there are more opportunities for first dates than ever. But even if casual dating is on the rise, that alone doesn’t make first dates any less stressful. Luckily, cannabis can be a great tool for managing all of those first-date jitters. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThere’s been quite a bit of research looking into the effectiveness of marijuana to treat anxiety. According to one study by Vanderbilt University Medical Center, our endocannabinoid system (ECS) may regulate anxiety by “dampening” excitatory signals. And some researchers are looking into the way the marijuana compound cannabidiol (CBD) interacts with CB1 receptors in the brain to help manage anxiety.\n\nSo, if you’re feeling a little anxious about your upcoming date, maybe a bit of cannabis could be exactly what you need to stay calm and relaxed so you can make a great first impression. \n\n### How to Incorporate Cannabis Into a First Date\n\nIncorporating cannabis into a first date is a very personal way to jumpstart a potential relationship. This is especially true if you rely on marijuana for medical reasons. It’s important to make sure the people you spend time with understand and embrace that. If marijuana is a vital part of your day, knowing your date is comfortable with cannabis consumption is a good thing to find out early on. \n\nNow, it’s important to remember that not everyone is a cannabis connoisseur like you might be. Just like a person who doesn’t drink alcohol may not want to go to a bar for a first date, there may be people out there who simply aren’t into the idea of consuming cannabis.\n\nThat’s OK. Make sure you communicate with your date before you meet up if you want cannabis to be a part of your activities so they aren’t taken by surprise. \n\nIf you’ve talked to your date about cannabis, and they’re into the idea, here are some fun, elevated date night ideas. \n\n### Pack a Picnic With a Cannabis-Infused Beverage\n\nForego the crowds at a trendy restaurant or the same old bar, and instead opt for a blanket, lots of snacks and a cannabis-infused beverage outside. A picnic can be a very cute and simple first date. Plus, the planning doesn’t have to be complicated. Pick any park in town, and buy a smorgasbord of options from the deli counter. \n\nInstead of a bottle of wine, make a refreshing cannabis-infused beverage, and bring it with you to serve. If you want to add an element of fun and surprise to the date, each person should bring a couple items of their own to contribute to the food spread.\n\nPicnics are a low-key and easy way to get to know a person. Because one thing’s for sure: You can tell a lot about a person by their food choices. \n\n### Harness the Marijuana Giggles at a Comedy Show \n\nIt’s no secret that cannabis can give you the giggles. And there’s nothing wrong with laughing a lot during a first date. A person’s sense of humor is a good thing to learn about early on. Pregame a comedy show with a joint or have a cannabis-infused mocktail before you head to the event. For extra giggles, try an energizing marijuana strain like Super Lemon Haze, which has also been reported to act as an aphrodisiac—perfect for date night. \n\n### Make a Marijuana-Infused Dinner at Home\n\nIf you feel comfortable enough, invite your first date over to your place for a home- cooked meal. Working together to make dinner in the kitchen can be a great compatibility test. If you can cook a meal together, it’s probably a good sign that a second date may be in order. \n\nCooking dinner with cannabis can be as simple as adding 15 mL of your preferred marijuana tincture to a salad dressing or pasta sauce. Or whip up a healthy dish with this recipe for cannabis-infused stuffed artichokes. If you want to feel relaxed but not too impaired, use a tincture with more CBD than tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This will give you the relaxing benefits of cannabis without feeling too high to make good conversation.\n\n### Go to a Cannabis & Art Class\n\nNowadays, not only are first dates more common, but options for cannabis-friendly date nights are also more plentiful than ever. In just about every state that’s legalized marijuana, there are cannabis-friendly classes for yoga, painting, ceramics, cooking and more. If your date is a cannabis connoisseur like you, this is a great option for a fun and relaxing first date with likeminded people. \n\nHead to a [Puff, Pass & Paint](https://puffpassandpaint.com/) class or to any other cannabis-friendly event. Be sure to bring some of your [favorite cannabis products](https://www.hellomd.com/products) in tow. Just don’t forget to read the event details to be sure your marijuana products meet the event’s rules.\n\nIf you aren’t sure how to find cannabis events near you, it’s easier than you think. Just head to [Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.com/) and search for cannabis events. \n\nMake your first date memorable by incorporating a little cannabis. And if your date isn’t comfortable with cannabis consumption, you can always consume a low dose of marijuana at home before your date to calm your nerves.\n\nHave you incorporated marijuana into a first date? Some common symptoms of panic attacks are:\n\n* Sweating\n* Chest pain\n* Light-headedness\n* Increased heart rate\n* Trouble breathing\n* Feeling like you’re going to die\n\nPanic attacks come on practically out of the blue, not necessarily with a trigger as happens with anxiety attacks. People are often misdiagnosed with a heart attack, when in reality they’re having a panic attack. Unfortunately, it’s not known why some people suffer panic attacks, but scientists’ best guess is that it results from a combination of family history and environmental factors like stress.\n\n### Traditional Ways to Treat Panic Attacks\n\nAs far as preventing panic attacks goes, many people employ tactics like talk therapy, biofeedback therapy, and a regimen of antidepressants or other medications. Some people find lifestyle changes such as daily exercise and a caffeine-free diet help prevent panic attacks, too. \n\nFor people in the middle of a panic attack, things that can help are:\n\n* Deep breathing\n* Keeping eyes closed\n* Physically touching something like fabric or snapping a rubber band on the wrist to remain present\n* Positive visualization\n\n### Can Cannabis Help Treat Panic Attacks?\n\nDoctors often prescribe benzodiazepines to treat panic attacks. But they’re only really intended for short-term use, and they come with a host of side effects like:\n\n* Lethargy\n* Confusion\n* Low blood pressure \n* Gastrointestinal problems\n* Addiction\n \nRELATED: [CANNABIS A BETTER ALTERNATIVE TO BENZODIAZEPINES](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5aa1a02ff24d1300077ccb80/cannabis-a-better-alternative-to-benzodiazepines)\n\nMany people consume cannabis for anxiety and depression, so could it help for panic attacks, too? It can, but you have to be careful about the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).\n\nTHC has been known to induce paranoia and an elevated heart rate for some—two things that panic attack sufferers can definitely do without. So that leaves cannabidiol (CBD). \n\nLuckily, the science says that CBD can be effective in treating anxiety and could help prevent panic attacks. \n\n* A 2001 study showed that [CBD reduced anxiety in people with a fear of public speaking](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21307846). \n* In 2004, researchers in Hungary looked at mice and concluded that [endocannabinoids influence stress and emotion responses](https://www.cell.com/neuron/fulltext/S0896-62731400017-8), because there are cannabinoid receptors in the brain.\n* [Acute CBD dosing seems to relieve many anxiety disorders](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/ ) including PTSD, panic disorders and OCD.\n\n### How to Consume CBD for Panic Attacks\n\nThe acute CBD dosing study notes that more research on chronic CBD dosing is needed. Many people consume CBD in moderate doses. Some ways to incorporate high-CBD marijuana into a panic attack-prevention strategy include:\n\n* Carrying CBD oil with you so that you can consume a dose when you start feeling a panic attack coming on. Place a few CBD drops under your tongue and leave them there for a as long as you can (at least 60 seconds will ensure that the cannabinoids permeate the tissues in the mouth well). Then swallow and take a deep breath. Practice any visualization or breathing exercises as usual and try to remain calm. You can do the same with even a CBD spray. \n* A quick few puffs of a CBD vape pen—if you’re in a private place and are open to inhaling cannabis. Though sublingual oils are fast-acting (taking effect in roughly 15 minutes or so), vaping or smoking will result in near-immediate effects.\n* Choosing CBD-rich cannabis strains like:\n>* [ACDC](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cbe97d520d60009f4f4a5/acdc)\n>* [Cannatonic](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce5dcd520d60009f4f4bd/cannatonic)\n>* [Canna-Tsu]( https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a9d9976067d15000ad28fdc/canna-tsu) \n* Consuming a daily dose of CBD. Some research has shown that appropriate cannabinoid levels take time to build up. So, in addition to consuming CBD during a panic attack, you may want to try taking a regular, preventative dose of CBD in order to balance your endocannabinoid system (ECS). Think of this like a daily vitamin. You won’t feel different right away, but your body will be making use of the CBD even if you don’t notice an immediate change. High-CBD capsules or tinctures are probably your best bet for daily dosing. If you don’t like the taste of a tincture on its own, you can always add it to your morning tea or coffee. \n\nPanic attacks are scary and often debilitating. But for some, adding CBD to their treatment can not only help prevent panic attacks, but also cut them short when they do happen. Have you had success treating panic attacks with CBD? Between 1996 and 2013, the number of adults filling a prescription for some type of benzodiazepine, or benzo, jumped by 67%. These powerful medications for anxiety, insomnia and a number of other conditions are implicated in roughly 8,000 overdose deaths a year. But just as it does for opioids, cannabis could be an exit drug out of benzodiazepine dependency and abuse, because of its ability to affect the same neural pathways in the brain.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What Are Benzodiazepines?\n\nBenzodiazepines are a large [class of lab-synthesized drugs](https://www.rxlist.com/benzodiazepines/drugs-condition.htm) that includes:\n\n* Diazepam (Valium) \n* Lorazepam (Ativan) \n* Clonazepam (Klonopin)\n* Alprazolam (Xanax)\n\nThese [medications are widely prescribed](https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/demystifying-psychiatry/201505/how-many-people-take-benzodiazepines) for conditions such as:\n\n* Anxiety \n* Insomnia \n* Nervousness \n* Panic disorders \n* Seizures \n* Muscle spasms \n\nSometimes they’re also used for sedation during surgery, and to treat premenstrual syndrome and the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. \n\n### The Many, Sometimes Deadly Side Effects of Benzodiazepines\n\nLike opioids, benzodiazepines are intended largely for short-term use, because they act relatively quickly. This means they’re prescribed for acute situations, such as calming a patient before a surgical procedure or easing the anxiety of a traveler before a flight. But also, similar to opioids, these drugs are frequently prescribed for long periods of time, which can lead to a number of serious side effects and addiction. \n\nBenzodiazepines alone are only rarely responsible for overdose deaths. But because they depress the central nervous system, which controls respiration, heart rate and other autonomous functions, they can contribute to death by overdose when they’re taken along with other kinds of central nervous system depressants such as alcohol or opioids. \n\nThough they’re not likely to be fatal, these drugs do have a long list of side effects. The more minor of these include:\n\n* Dizziness\n* Confusion\n* Problems with memory and concentration\n* Gastrointestinal problems\n* Poor balance\n* Fatigue \n\nBut serious effects can also occur, such as:\n\n* Jaundice\n* Severe low blood pressure\n* Elevated heart rate\n* Musculoskeletal problems\n* Cognitive decline and dementia (especially in older people who take them for long periods of time)\n\n### How Do Benzodiazepines Work?\n\nScience still hasn’t clearly established the exact reasons benzodiazepines work, but recent research points to their ability to affect a network of receptors in the brain related to the body’s production and use of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), an amino acid that inhibits the transmission of nerve impulses in the central nervous system. Because GABA slows neural activity, and benzodiazepines have been shown to enhance the effects of GABA, this relationship appears to account for benzos’ calming, slowing effects that reduce anxiety and promote sleep and muscle relaxation. \n\nMalfunctions in the GABA receptor system seem to play a role in a number of psychological and neurological conditions such as:\n\n* Anxiety\n* Panic\n* Insomnia\n* Epilepsy\n\nSome research suggests that schizophrenia and other psychoses might be related to GABA deficiency. Though GABA receptors are found in many areas of the brain, they’re especially prevalent in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus and amygdala, areas related to managing emotion, cognition and coordination. \n\nBenzodiazepines can bind to GABA receptors to boost their inhibitory activity. But so can cannabis—and the relationship between the GABA receptor system and the body’s large network of endocannabinoid receptors reveals why cannabis products can be safe and effective alternatives to benzodiazepines for just about every condition these drugs are used to treat.\n\n### The Cannabis/GABA Connection\n\nEndocannabinoid receptors are found in organs and tissue throughout the body, binding both to cannabinoids produced internally and to those from outside sources such as spices and cannabis. The [cannabinoid receptor CB1 occurs widely in the \nbrain](http://www.jneurosci.org/content/21/23/9506?utm_source=TrendMD&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=JNeurosci_TrendMD_0), especially in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus and amygdala—areas that are also rich in GABA receptors. \n\n[Anandamide](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a949d06f24d1300077ccb66/eating-anandamide-the-bliss-molecule) and 2-AG, the body’s natural cannabinoids, also promote feelings of calm and relaxation—and recent research indicates that [they can affect processes\nthat reduce the release of GABA](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs00213-017-4648-z), just as benzodiazepines do. And because cannabinoids from cannabis, particularly cannabidiol (CBD), bind to the same receptors as natural cannabinoids do, they support those processes, too. \n\n### Cannabis Offers Benzo Benefits—Without the Risks\n\nCannabis products of all kinds, especially those high in CBD, can be effective—and far safer—alternatives for benzodiazepines. Although endocannabinoid receptors are found in relatively large numbers in many areas of the brain, they’re notably absent in the brainstem—unlike receptors for both opioids and GABA. For that reason, cannabis is extremely unlikely to cause or contribute to an overdose death. \n\nRELATED: [TOP 10 HIGH-CBD MARIJUANA STRAINS FOR ANXIETY](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57f2b7f12b1e99000a671ac3/top-10-high-cbd-marijuana-strains-for-anxiety)\n\nWhen used for long periods of time, benzodiazepines can override the body’s own expression of GABA. These medications can become addictive, and when stopped, they can trigger a series of potentially dangerous withdrawal symptoms. The risk of benzodiazepine addiction is so high that a majority of drug rehab programs now include treatment for them alongside protocols for opioids and other kinds of drugs.\n\nBut stopping cannabis causes few, if any, physical withdrawal symptoms. And because cannabis affects all of the functions of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), it brings with it other positive effects such as immune system support and relief from pain and the symptoms of a long list of health conditions.\n\nRecent research on cannabis as a substitute for prescription medications reveals that an [overwhelming majority of cannabis consumers were able to reduce or stop using not only opioids, but also other medications](https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/06/survey-pain-patients-overwhelmingly-prefer-medical-marijuana-over-opioids) including benzodiazepines, by using cannabis. \n\nThe documented benefits of cannabis include relief from anxiety, insomnia and depression, as well as the symptoms of epilepsy and other disorders that are currently treated with benzodiazepines. In all its forms, cannabis works with the brain’s GABA pathways just as benzos do—and it just might be an exit drug from this burgeoning addiction epidemic, too.\n\nPhoto credit: [Thought Catalog](https://unsplash.com/@thoughtcatalog)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. You really just need to experiment and find the right strains/products for you. Take a look at this [article](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-5-marijuana-strains-for-depression/), which lists some good strains for depression.\n\nThere are also a number of holistic approaches you can take in addition to cannabis. This [article](https://hellomd.com/articles/holistic-ways-to-ease-depression-and-anxiety) goes over some of these.\n\n[Read more answers to this question](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/5a3c2f1377a88f000694a910/what-type-of-cannabis-can-be-taken-for-depression).\n\n### Q: I would like to know the best type of marijuana for depression and anxiety.\n\nAnswer: [@dneice](https://www.hellomd.com/people/57a8fc7bfb4f670009231822/dneice) In discussing mood disorders, I like to separate the discussion into two parts: symptom relief and alleviation of the possible underlying cannabinoid deficiency that may be contributing to your depression and anxiety.\n\nFor immediate symptom relief of depression, the sativa and sativa-dominant strains such as Jack Herer, Blue Dream, Green Crack, and a host of others work. However, if you also have anxiety, sativas have been known to increase this. \nFor anxiety, strains like Grand Daddy Purps, among others, seem to work. You’ll have to find the strains that work for you and one may work better at one time and another may work better at another. The terpenes in cannabis also contribute to your sense of wellbeing and I would investigate aromatherapy as a less expensive and perhaps more effective way to get the terpenes into your system.\n\nTo alleviate the chronic condition of depression and anxiety, I would suggest taking a high CBD/low THC tincture to start two to three times a day, but base your dosage on the recommendation of whatever brand you purchase. We have found that CBD patches and different ratio patches 18:1 or 4:1 (CBD:THC) patches work as well. These modes of administration allow for consistent bio availability and thus allow your body to work full time on helping you get better (contrasted with smoking, which only gives your body three to six hours of bioavailability). We have seen a lifting of mood within a day or two, but sometimes longer.\n\nOn another note, moderate exercise, meditation, and watching what you eat (start taking an Omega 3 supplement and avoid processed foods) can also help with mood disorders.\n\nRELATED: [TOP MARIJUANA STRAINS FOR DEPRESSION](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-5-marijuana-strains-for-depression/)\n### Q: Which strain is ideal for a serotonin deficiency?\n\nAnswer: [@drkim]( https://www.hellomd.com/people/5896394f4c4b960008abd774/drkim) Hello, and thank you for the great question.\n\nFor a reduction in the symptoms of depression, I recommend a very small dose of sativa or, even better, obtaining a vaporizer pen from hmbldt.com which was specifically formulated for depression; it can also be dosed precisely. http://hmbldt.com/pen-bliss/\n\nThere’s preliminary research that has shown low doses of cannabis to activate serotonergic neurons, thereby increasing serotonin—and has even been shown to exert potent antidepressant-like properties in the rat forced-swim test (FST). However, the same study showed that higher doses of cannabis actually reduced serotonergic action from baseline.\nhttp://www.jneurosci.org/content/27/43/11700\n\nConsidering the above, it becomes clear that cannabis is best used at the lowest dose and frequency possible to address your depression.
