But that changed in late 2021 when an enhancement to New York's medical marijuana act allowed any New Yorker with a valid medical card to buy flower at any of the state's legal cannabis dispensaries. Here's a look at seven of the best strains to look for.\n\n![Medical marijuana is legal in many states, including New York](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_25_at_6_39_41_PM_9a03d26708.png)\n\n### Medical Marijuana Offers Health Benefits\n\nThe ancient cannabis Sativa plant contains many [cannabinoid compounds](https://hellomd.com/articles/the-10-cannabinoids-in-cannabis-you-should-know) and oily resin called terpenes which have considerable benefits for human health. \n\nCannabis compounds THC (delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) trigger activity in the [endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system). The ECS is a network of cell receptors in the brain and body that responds to naturally produced cannabinoid chemicals and the cannabinoids in the cannabis plant. \n\n![Medical marijuana has many health benefits](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_25_at_6_41_03_PM_1c31d55096.png)\n\nRecreational cannabis users appreciate the euphoric high caused by the psychoactive compound THC, but THC and other cannabinoids also promote balance or homeostasis among the body's subsystems. This is why numerous studies have shown that cannabis can help with health conditions such as anxiety, chronic pain, diabetes, cancer, and neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. \n\n### Medical Marijuana Laws Provide Access to Medicine\n\nUntil relatively recently, though, getting access to the health benefits of cannabis has proved challenging. Many states have now passed laws legalizing cannabis at least for medical use, but US federal law still lists it as a dangerous Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD.\n\n![Regulation and laws allow for legal access to medical marijuana](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_25_at_6_42_28_PM_006992b86c.png)\n\n Even in states that have passed medical marijuana provisions, access to cannabis products is still limited to certain types and quantities - and you'll need [a valid medical card](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-to-get-your-legal-weed-card-in-the-state-of-new-york) to buy them. But the landscape of cannabis laws is constantly changing, as in New York's recently enacted additions, or \"enhancements\" to its current medical marijuana legislation.\n\n### Medical Cannabis Regulations in New York: What to Know\n\nMedical marijuana has been legal in New York since 2014, making ingestible cannabis products available to anyone who has a medical card issued by a qualified practitioner. To qualify, applicants need to show that they have one or more [qualifying health conditions on the state's allowed condition list](https://cannabis.ny.gov/#:~:text=You%20may%20be%20eligible%20for,cord%20injury%20with%20spasticity%2C%20epilepsy%2C).\n\n![Medical marijuana regulations in New York - what you need to know](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_25_at_6_45_24_PM_bee3eb6485.png) \n\nBut until recently, cardholders could purchase cannabis only in ingestible forms such as tinctures, capsules, and gummies. That changed in October 2021, when an enhancement to the existing law allowed for [the sale of whole or ground cannabis flower](https://hellomd.com/articles/new-york-begins-sales-of-whole-cannabis-flower). Now, New York's legal cannabis dispensaries carry a variety of popular cannabis strains for purchase by qualified customers.\n\n### Cannabis Strains: Sativa, Indica, or Hybrid?\n[Cannabis strains](https://www.healthline.com/health/beginners-guide-to-marijuana-strains) have different qualities, and cannabis plants are cultivated to fine-tune their properties for targeted effects. \n\n![Can cannabis prevent infection from COVID-19?](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_20_at_9_08_08_AM_7c90885251.png)\n\nIndica strains are known for their relaxing and calming effects, while Sativa strains are energizing and stimulating. THCV has been shown to suppress appetite. And consumers report that Durban Poison imparts a clear-headed, focused and energizing high.\n\nRELATED: [CAN CANNABIS HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT?](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-help-you-lose-weight/)\n\n### Marijuana Can Provide the Motivation to Hit the Gym \n\nGetting healthy is one of the most important resolutions people make. Or the flavor boost that spices like oregano and dill can lend to your favorite foods? If you do, thank pinene, the very common terpene that gives these and many other plants their distinctive fragrance. \n\nBut pinene also has potent healing properties—and that makes pinene-rich cannabis strains especially effective for treating a long list of health conditions such as asthma, arthritis and Crohn’s disease.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Terpenes, Cannabinoids & the Endocannabinoid System\n\nPinene is one of a very large group of terpenes, fragrant oils produced by the glands of many kinds of plants. Because of their strong smells, terpenes ward off predators—but these pungent oils also benefit the human body and brain. \n\nTerpenes are found in so many plants that are used for flavoring food that a number of them are considered food grade, or safe for consumption (though some terpenes are still considered toxic when consumed in large quantities). Terpenes can also be extracted and used alone as essential oils.\n\nPinene is abundant in the plant world, and cannabis is no exception. Research continues to reveal new information about the properties of the more than 200 terpenes found in the various strains of the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. And numerous studies have shown that the major terpenes have considerable healing properties. Those properties play out in synergy with the other terpenes and cannabinoids that give each strain its unique chemical profile. \n\nLike the more familiar cannabinoid compounds tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), terpenes interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a vast network of receptors located throughout the body and brain. The ECS responds to both endocannabinoids produced by the body and to the nearly identical cannabinoids in cannabis. That explains why pinene, like the other major terpenes, can affect cells and tissues throughout the body.\n\n### Pinene’s Many Health Benefits\n\nPinene has two molecular forms: alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. The two are identical except for a single molecule; this accounts for their different features and actions. But both work in conjunction with the rest of a cannabis strain’s overall chemical profile to support health and ease the symptoms of a variety of conditions.\n\nIn nature, alpha-pinene is more prevalent than beta-pinene, and the same is true in cannabis. Alpha-pinene is responsible for the distinctive smell of pine needles and of some herbs, including rosemary. It also accounts for the smell of pine oil and turpentine, and it can also appear in citrus peel. Studies suggest that alpha-pinene might have more potent health benefits than beta-pinene does, but the beta form also plays an important role in protecting the body. \n\nBeta-pinene contributes to the fragrance of many cooking herbs including oregano, parsley and dill. In cannabis, it usually occurs in smaller amounts than the alpha version, but its connections to other terpenes create a synergistic effect. For example, beta-pinene appears to play a role in the production of another major terpene, myrcene, and some studies have shown that it can work with the terpene limonene) to fight viral infections.\n\n Several studies in recent years have revealed that pinene, particularly alpha-pinene, has a number of significant health benefits, including:\n\n* **Pain relief:** As an extracted oil and as part of a whole plant cannabis strain, pinene can affect the body’s pain receptors to reduce discomfort from conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia.\n\n* **Antioxidant properties:** Pinene can help to protect cells from excessive oxidation, which can break them down and make the body susceptible to a variety of diseases.\n\n* **Anti-inflammatory features:** Pinene can [reduce inflammation](https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/np400828x), which can depress the immune system and stress cells and tissues.\n\n* **Anti-viral characteristics:** Some laboratory research reveals that [beta-pinene with limonene can be 100% effective in killing the common herpes simplex virus](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4393490/).\n\n* **Protection for the gastrointestinal system:** Pinene has been shown to [protect the lining of the stomach and other parts of the gastrointestinal system](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4329611/) against inflammation and lesions from conditions such as ulcers and Crohn’s disease.\n\n* **Neutralizing THC:** Pinene can inhibit the negative effects that come from consuming too much THC, such as short-term memory loss and feelings of fear and paranoia. That’s because it can cross the blood brain barrier and [directly affect the behavior of neurotransmitters in the brain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27573669), including GABA, a chemical that modulates mood, and the brain’s receptors for benzodiazepine medications.\n\n* **Bronchodilation:** Pinene can ease congestion and constriction in the lungs and bronchial areas, making breathing easier for people with asthma and other pulmonary conditions.\n\n### Where to Find Pinene\n\nPinene is just one component of the many cannabinoids, terpenes and other substances that make up the whole cannabis plant. It works with all those elements to create an individual strain’s unique profile and boost the healing effects of all those other elements as well. \n\nBut some cannabis strains are high in pinene, and most of them are easily identifiable by their distinctively piney smell. Along with supporting the body’s healing mechanisms, the top pinene-rich cannabis strains can promote calm and focus, and balance the effects of too much THC. \n\n\nPinene is also available as a pure terpene extract that can be used in vaping and dabbing with other forms of cannabis, or to add to foods for flavoring. It’s also widely sold as an essential oil for aromatherapy. \n\nPinene in small amounts is considered safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but it can have some toxic effects when it’s ingested or inhaled, particularly when used in various cleaning products such as turpentine. \n\nJust about everyone knows the scent of pinene, even if the name isn’t familiar. But pinene is more than just a nice scent—this abundant cannabis terpene has plenty of healing benefits for both the body and the brain.\n\nPhoto credit: [Jean Lakosnyk](https://unsplash.com/@lifelikeinspiration)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Putting on your favorite songs after consuming some marijuana can be an almost spiritual experience. Time seems to slow down, the music fully captures your attention and everything just sounds so good. \n\nI’ve had many positive experiences listening to music while enjoying cannabis, but my favorites have been when the music was live. Listening to live music can be a fun, relaxing and enjoyable way to spend free time with friends. But listening to live music after taking marijuana brings it to another level entirely. And there are actually some scientific explanations about why music seems so much richer after consuming cannabis.\n\nCurious about trying cannabis for your next live music experience? We’ve got a few recommendations on what kind of marijuana to try before your favorite artist’s next performance. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Why Cannabis Makes Music So Enjoyable\n\nMarijuana consumers tend to report an increase in enjoyment with listening to music and playing it, too. But how does cannabis make music so entertaining? Scientists have explored this question, and they have a few ideas about what’s going on:\n\n* **Cannabis slows perception of time for musicians:** One of the major factors that researchers believe affects our enjoyment of music—especially for the musicians themselves—is how we perceive time. Interestingly, cannabis can actually speed up certain mental processes, leading to a relative slowing down of time. In one study, [cannabis consumers perceived a 15-second time interval as 16.7 seconds](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF00402390). Some believe this helps musicians improvise, because they have more subjective time to figure out their next moves. \n\n* **Marijuana increases focus and attention:** For those listening to music, time slowing down allows them to perceive more of the music with more focus and attention. “When your time perception changes, your focus of attention changes,” says Jorg Fachner, a researcher studying the phenomena. “You might have an enhanced ability to select certain information and disregard other information, which could help distinguish the individual sounds a bit more intensively.” \n\n>This can leave the music seeming more clear, clean and distinct than it would otherwise. And this may enhance enjoyment. Previous research showed that [marijuana could also cause noises to seem louder](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02791072.1978.10471870), an effect that may also increase our attention to music.\n\n>In Fachner’s research, he saw that the [areas of the brain that lit up in music-listening cannabis consumers were the same areas stimulated in gifted mathematicians solving complex math problems](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1300/J175v02n02_02). Cannabis can help us to focus more on the intricacies and details of the music, while using less mental energy to do so. \n\nRELATED: [STAFF PICKS: 8 ALBUMS TO LISTEN TO WHEN YOU’RE TOO HIGH](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b58dc91a1805500087db9bd/staff-picks-8-albums-to-listen-to-when-youre-too-high)\n\n* **Cannabis keeps your mind in the moment:** Fachner also explains that those listening to music on cannabis tend to stay in the present moment. With marijuana, it can become temporarily challenging to integrate past, present and future memories. This tends to make it easier for those consuming the plant to stay firmly in the present moment, focused on enjoying those tunes. \n\n* **Much music has been made by marijuana consumers:** Some argue that cannabis makes music more enjoyable because [a lot of music has been made by cannabis consumers](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5888177429f44d000c1d76ff/why-does-music-sound-better-with-marijuana). Taking cannabis before listening can help people get into the mindset of the musicians, and so may help the listener have more of a connection with the music. \n\n### Cannabis for Concerts: What to Try\n\nWhatever kind of music you love, cannabis can make it even more enjoyable. But there are big differences in the various types of marijuana and some strains may fit better with specific kinds of music. Sour Diesel’s effects tend to be more mentally inclined, so those looking for pain relief may want to seek out a different strain. \n\nMain photo credit: [Daria Lipova](https://www.flickr.com/people/daria_lipova/)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. And you thought PMS was bad. \n\nWhile our moodiness isn’t always related to hormones, there’s a scientific reason behind a woman’s typical hormonal mood swings. Science can also show us why cannabis can be helpful in bringing those hormones into check.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nI recently learned from Dr. Lakisha Jenkins, a naturopathic doctor and founding member of the [California Cannabis Industry Association](http://www.cacannabisindustry.org/), that as we age, our [endocrine system](https://www.livescience.com/26496-endocrine-system.html)—like all of our internal systems—doesn’t work as well as it should. Technically speaking, the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, which are responsible for hormone production, can get out of whack. The result is an unpleasant rage of hormones.\n\nDr. Jenkins explains that our endocannabinoid system (ECS) affects our endocrine system as it does other systems throughout our bodies. Cannabis and its cannabinoids and terpenes can positively affect our ECS, bringing it into homeostasis or balance. When our ECS is more balanced, our endocrine system can be, too.\n\nRELATED: [HOW THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM AFFECTS WOMEN’S HEALTH](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a271593100a820006562eb8/how-the-endocannabinoid-system-affects-womens-health)\n\n### Women Report Marijuana Helps in Dealing With Moods\n\nWhether or not they know the science of the endocrine system and the ECS, women are finding that cannabis can help alleviate their negative emotional state, the kind that stems from unbalanced hormones.\n\n“Cannabis has been a huge help in my sometimes pretty severe depression,” says Laurie Wolf, founder of gourmet cannabis edibles company [Laurie + MaryJane](http://www.laurieandmaryjane.com/). “No matter how bad my day or dark mood, eating or smoking cannabis has _always_ improved my mood.”\n\nAt 52, Carolynn King in Colorado says she’s dealing with general irritability. “I’m irritable at everything and everybody for no reason. I can feel it coming down on me, and I hate everybody,” she says, attributing her moods to peri-menopause. \n\nJill Trinchero, founder of [SDK Snacks](http://www.sdksnacks.com/), a cannabis edibles company in Oregon, says she was motivated to create her line of cookies, vegan raw coconut bites and savory crackers to help with her own anxiety as well as the stress of parenting.\n\n“As a stay-at-home mom, I didn’t want to smoke and knew that consuming cannabis helped me be more present with my kids and deal with OCD and anxiety,” Jill says. “I didn’t want to be in that state, because it stresses people around me out; it stresses my kids.”\n\n### Best Forms of Cannabis Consumption for Better Moods\n\nWomen’s marijuana consumption preferences vary depending on the elevated mood they seek. \n\nFor Laurie, edibles are her favorite intake method, but she says smoking a joint is fun and a better option when she wants immediate results. \n\nCarolyn says vaping and edibles both help with her irritability.\n\nJill usually has a 5 mg edible. “I’m not laid out on the couch. I can still function for my kids and work and everything—with just a low-dose cookie,” she says.\n\nMarie P. in Wyoming has been dealing with hormonal issues since having a hysterectomy at 27. Now at 57, she smokes and consumes marijuana edibles to relax. “It’s helped my moods and also helps me sleep,” she says. “I have been dealing with this for years, but cannabis helps better than anything.”\n\nAccording to Dr. Jenkins, sublingual or oral forms of cannabis can provide more instantaneous results. “When you ingest an edible, it goes through your entire digestive system, so you’d have to be pretty precise with the number of milligrams you consume,” she explains. “And you’d need to know what your metabolism is like that day, even if your digestive system is sluggish, because hormones affect digestion. Edibles are not as specialized or dialed in.”\n\nTinctures, on the other hand, come with a dropper so you can titrate your dose, measuring out the number of drops to find your “personal sweet spot,” as Dr. Jenkins puts it. That personal sweet spot can also vary not just from woman to woman, but from time of day to the period of the month. Even in full menopause, Dr. Jenkins says, our bodies still follow a cycle. \n\n### Cannabis Strains for a Better Mood\n\nIn terms of marijuana strains, every woman has her own preferences similar to having a preferred form of consumption. \n\n“I tend to go towards indica-dominant or pure indica strains,” Laurie says. “There are times when certain sativas make me feel uncomfortably racy, occasionally paranoid. There are plenty of sativas I love. It's really only an occasional unpleasant experience.”\n\nJill says she goes with an indica because of her anxiety. Some sativas can exacerbate her anxious feelings, making her even more hyper alert.\n\nCarolynn says that her favorite strain is [Grape Ape](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce671d520d60009f4f4c0/grape-ape). “That just makes me happy. I’ve not found another strain that makes me as happy as Grape Ape,” she says.\n\nMarie’s preferred marijuana strains include [Blue Dream](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a70be4e6c30440008cafd14/blue-dream) and [Northern Lights](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce57ed520d60009f4f4bb/northern-lights). She finds they mellow her out and don’t make her want to eat everything in sight.\n\n### Going Beyond Strains When Choosing Cannabis\n\nStrains may be a common way to pick your cannabis, but don’t limit your exploration based on strains, says Dr. Jenkins. “Unfortunately, strains can’t always run as true as they should,” she explains. “Look at cannabinoid and terpene profiles as well.”\n\nDr. Jenkins’ advice for picking the right cannabis product includes:\n\n* Looking for cannabidiol (CBD)-rich strains as CBD plays a strong role in balancing hormones \n\n* Making sure that the CBD-rich strain you choose also has [tetrahydrocannabolic acid (THCA)](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a90bb3ef24d1300077ccb60/how-to-make-the-most-of-non-psychoactive-thca) to activate the CBD\n\n* Looking for terpenes that are uplifting, like [limonene](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a8e1261f24d1300077ccb5b/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-limonene)\n\n* Knowing that if you have ADD or ADHD, indicas that are normally body relaxing could affect you more like a sativa that’s more cerebral and stimulating—meaning an indica’s effects could be reversed, so be aware\n\n“Do a lot of research and know yourself, know your body, know what _you_ need,” Dr. Jenkins advises. “Then take the research, and go on your road of self-discovery to find what’s right for you. Individuality takes precedence over any traditional medicine you take, especially cannabis.”\n\nWhat do you consume when your moods are darker or edgier than you’d like? What lifts your moods? Post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a [psychiatric ailment that affects nearly 8% of Americans](http://www.ptsd.ne.gov/what-is-ptsd.html). People from all walks of life can experience PTSD, as evidenced by the more than five million Americans between the ages of 18–54 suffering from the disorder today. Traumatic events such as car accidents, violent assaults, war, natural disasters and more can all cause PTSD. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Symptoms of PTSD\n\nPTSD is characterized by stress reactions that follow a traumatic event and persist longer than three months. These stress reactions can cause great agony and disrupt a person’s entire way of life if gone untreated. According to the [National Center for PTSD](https://www.ptsd.va.gov/), these reactions typically manifest as three types of symptoms: \n\n* **Reliving the event:** Recollecting the event includes nightmares and/or abrupt flashbacks to memories of the event. Flashbacks are almost always spurred by a trigger—something heard, smelled or seen that reminds a PTSD sufferer of the trauma they experienced. \n\n* **Avoiding situations reminiscent of the event:** People suffering from PTSD often go to extreme lengths to avoid stress reactions, including rearranging their entire life to avoid circumstances reminiscent of the traumatic event. If the event happened in their home, they might move. If it happened in a car, they may stop driving. If it happened while walking on the street, they might not leave their home altogether. People suffering from PTSD also often steer clear of loud noises, crowded places and sleep to avoid nightmares. \n\n* **Negative changes in beliefs and feelings:** PTSD can go so far as to make a person alter their beliefs and feelings. People who were once socially active may begin to isolate themselves from friends and family. In some of the most extreme cases, PTSD patients can become paranoid and distrustful of the world at large and all of the people in it. \n\nRELATED: [TOP 5 LIFESTYLE CHANGES TO HELP COMBAT PTSD](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-5-lifestyle-changes-to-help-combat-ptsd) \n\n### Top 5 Cannabis Strains for Treating Symptoms of PTSD\n\nBecause PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that involves many of the symptoms that cannabis has proven to be effective in managing, medical marijuana’s popularity as a PTSD treatment is on the rise. Although much more research must be done, a handful of strains have been successful in managing anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, nightmares and other debilitating symptoms that come with PTSD. \n\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUJ13-kqsRU`\n\n#### 1. Blue Dream\n\n[Blue Dream](https://hellomd.com/strains/blue-dream) is one of the most popular cannabis strains in legal marijuana states across the country. Luckily, its popularity also makes it one of the most widely available strains out there. It’s a perfectly balanced hybrid strain known for its euphoric and long-lasting high that’s both welcoming enough for cannabis newcomers and pleasant enough for even the most experienced consumers. \n\nFor those dealing with PTSD, Blue Dream’s euphoric and mellow high is known for having a positive effect on mood, especially for those with anxiety and depression. Blue Dream is a good marijuana strain to choose for managing symptoms of PTSD during the day. \n\n#### 2. Harlequin\n\n[Harlequin](https://hellomd.com/strains/harlequin) is a specialty cannabis strain bred for its consistently high cannabidiol (CBD) content. Unlike many high-CBD marijuana strains, Harlequin still has a decent amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), with a CBD to THC ratio of 5:2 in almost every Harlequin plant. This ratio is ideal for those living with PTSD because the high CBD content can have mood-stabilizing effects, while the THC can help fend off the nightmares that often terrorize PTSD sufferers. Harlequin is a great strain for medicating during the day or night.\n\n#### 3. Headband\n\n[Headband](https://hellomd.com/strains/headband) is an indica-dominant hybrid rich in THC (around 20%) that manifests in a strong mind and body high. Its potent THC level is good for relaxing the mind and can help those suffering from PTSD to skip [the stage of sleep where most dreams and nightmares occur](https://hellomd.com/articles/does-cannabis-reduce-rem-sleep-and-your-ability-to-dream), and sail into deep sleep instead. \n\nHeadband is probably best used in the late afternoon or before bed. Keep in mind that many say the effects of this strain can take up to 20 minutes to fully appear. \n\n#### 4. Durban Poison\n\n[Durban Poison](https://hellomd.com/strains/durban-poison) is a high-energy cannabis sativa strain known for its clear-headed and productive high. Durban Poison has been reported to help with social anxiety, energizing people who would usually feel burdened by social interactions. Sometimes PTSD can cause people to withdraw from social situations and friendships in general, and Durban Poison could be a natural way of treating that symptom.\n\nWhen consuming Durban Poison, keep it mind that it’s a pure sativa strain. An increased heart rate is likely, which some cannabis consumers may not enjoy. When a high dose is introduced to a cannabis newbie or someone not used to consuming sativa strains, Durban Poison can even cause paranoia. And since paranoia is already something that PTSD patients can suffer from, exacerbating the problem isn’t productive. If you’re going to try this marijuana strain, take it slow at the beginning and work your way up to a higher dose over time. \n\n#### 5. ACDC\n\n[ACDC](https://hellomd.com/strains/acdc) is a high-CBD marijuana strain ideal for use during the day when focus, calm and productivity are needed. Originating from the popular marijuana strain [Cannatonic](https://hellomd.com/strains/cannatonic), ACDC has a 20:1 CBD to THC ratio. This ratio allows the strain to impart increased productivity and relaxation of the mind and body—all without causing the dramatic effects a high-THC cannabis strain might bring on. \n\nACDC is an excellent place to start for those PTSD sufferers who are new to marijuana. Did you know that May 25 is Tap Dance Day? Or that March 28 is Manatee Appreciation Day? Just a few weeks ago, I learned that March 13 is Open an Umbrella Indoors Day. And today is no different: March 20 is the International Day of Happiness.\r\n\r\nThe United Nations (UN) started the International Day of Happiness in 2013 and chose March 20—the first day of spring for those of us living above the Equator—because of its significance in terms of rebirth and new beginnings. Celebrating happiness may seem vague, but the UN’s annual happiness report ranks countries’ happiness based on life expectancy, social support and gross domestic product. This year, Finland tops the happiness list, while the U.S. fell four places to 18. \r\n\r\nBut how can you celebrate the International Day of Happiness? There are many ways to keep your spirits high, and you can even incorporate cannabis to help bump up your mood. \r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\n### How Marijuana Acts as a Mood Stabilizer\r\n\r\nThe cannabis plant contains compounds called cannabinoids. You’ve probably heard of a few, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Cannabinoids are very similar to compounds we produce naturally, called endocannabinoids. Cannabinoids from the marijuana plant and our own endocannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of cannabinoid receptors found throughout the body. \r\n\r\nAs far as brain chemistry and mood go, it’s thought that endocannabinoids help keep the brain’s chemicals balanced. And because the cannabinoids in marijuana supplement the endocannabinoids in the brain (which are sometimes lacking), patients who suffer from mood conditions such as bipolar disorder report that cannabis helps smooth out their emotional highs and lows, and also acts to improve their overall mood.\r\n\r\nRELATED: [A NATURAL MOOD STABILIZER: MEDICAL MARIJUANA CAN HELP FIGHT BIPOLAR DISORDER](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55c10d093166350006110000/a-natural-mood-stabilizer-medical-marijuana-can-help-fight-bipolar-disorder)\r\n\r\n### 5 Ways to Celebrate the International Day of Happiness With Cannabis\r\n\r\nEven if you don’t have a mood disorder, some kinds of marijuana can be uplifting, relaxing and can increase happiness. To differentiate the types of strains in the market, the cannabis industry relies on strain names, which breeders dream up when they create a new strain. \n\nWhether it be from personal experience or reading reviews on websites like Leafly or WoahStork, patients have come to associate specific effects and chemical profiles with certain strains. For example, Blue Dream is listed among as one of the world's most popular strains, and it is often described as, “a sativa-dominant hybrid” that “balances full-body relaxation with gentle cerebral invigoration”. \n\nWhen patients purchase Blue Dream from a dispensary, this is the experience they expect. That expectation is important because patients who consistently use cannabis to treat a condition require a consistent effect. However, how certain can patients be that the Blue Dream they purchased in their local dispensary is the same as the strain described online? Or how certain can they be that the Blue Dream that is on the shelf at their local dispensary is the same as the Blue Dream across town? \n\nIt turns out, they can’t be very sure. \n\n### Using Genetics to Identify Strains\n\nMedicinal Genomics has genetically sequenced hundreds of cannabis strains grown in a number of states using our [StrainSEEK™ Strain Identification and Registration service](http://www.medicinalgenomics.com/strainseek-strain-identification-and-certification/). With this service we extract DNA from cannabis plant material and obtain a unique DNA fingerprint for each strain. We then submit that information to the BitCoin Blockchain to serve as a public proof of existence record that growers can use to protect their intellectual property. \n\nPart of the StrainSEEK process includes mapping the strains onto a phylogenetic tree that visually displays the relationships between the strains and calculates their genetic distance. Genetic distance is a number that is used to show the relative similarity between two genomes. The lower the number, the closer the relationship. \n\nThat information is made publically available on [kannapedia.](http://www.kannapedia.net/). \n\n### Same Name, Different Strain\n\nWhen we receive two or more samples from different growers with the same strain name, we sometimes see interesting results. \n\nFor example, we have sequenced three different Blue Dream samples from growers in three different states ([California](http://www.kannapedia.net/strains/rsp10005/), [Colorado](http://www.kannapedia.net/strains/rsp10129/), and [Nevada](http://www.kannapedia.net/strains/rsp10269/). The samples from Colorado and Nevada are genetically very similar, with a genetic distance under 2. However, the sample from California is not similar at all, and it’s genetic distance from the others is greater than 8. You can see this on the phylotree below. The Colorado and Nevada strains are at about 3 o’clock on the tree, while the California samples is closer to 7 o’clock. Strains that have a large genetic distance are more likely to have different cannabinoid and terpenoid ratios, which could produce a very different effect for patients. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/587ea1afa9d0d5000898d0ba/embedded_images/587ea1b1a9d0d5000898d0bb/Screen_Shot_2017-01-17_at_2.20.53_PM.png) \n\nWe see another example of this with Girl Scout Cookies, another very popular strain. We obtained four samples of Girl Scout Cookies from four different growers in three different states (one from [California](http://www.kannapedia.net/strains/rsp10413/), two from Colorado ([1](http://www.kannapedia.net/strains/rsp10246/),[2](http://www.kannapedia.net/strains/rsp10141/)), and one from [Nevada](http://www.kannapedia.net/strains/rsp10435/)). The three samples from California and Colorado are all very closely related, with genetic distances within 1.40. However, the genetic distance between the Nevada sample and the other three is approximately 8. You can see this on the tree image below. The closely related strains are at 11 o’clock, and the outlier is around 7 o’clock. Again, it’s likely the Nevada version of Girl Scout Cookies will produce a different effect than the other samples. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/587ea1afa9d0d5000898d0ba/embedded_images/587ea1b3a9d0d5000898d0bc/Screen_Shot_2017-01-17_at_2.21.24_PM.png) \n\n### Same Strain, Different Name\n \nAnother interesting observation happens when two or more strains from different growers have different names, but are essentially genetically identical. For example, we obtained a sample of [Space Oddity](http://www.kannapedia.net/strains/rsp10476/) from California that is very similar to a strain called Green Crack that is grown in Colorado (genetic distance is 1.8).\n\nWe also sequenced a sample of [Snoop’s Dream](http://www.kannapedia.net/strains/rsp10033/) from Washington that is nearly identical to the two Blue Dream samples we discussed earlier that were grown in Colorado and California (genetic distances within 1.05). \n\n### What Does This All Mean?\n\nThis means that patients and consumers can’t rely on strain names to guide their decision about which cannabis products to purchase, especially if they are purchasing cannabis from a different dispensary. There is no guarantee that the Girl Scout Cookies they bought from their local dispensary is the same as what is being sold under the same name in another state, or perhaps even across town. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nTo solve this problem, genetic sequencing will be able to establish consistency with strain naming by establishing a genetic fingerprint for popular strains, such as Girl Scout Cookies. This fingerprint could become the standard to which all strains that claim to Girl Scout Cookies are measured, and only strains with a genotype that matches the established standard will be considered the real Girl Scout Cookies. \n\nIn time, the cannabis industry may need to move away from traditional strain names altogether and adopt a new naming system that will use genetic markers from the plant’s DNA to create an entirely unique naming system. \n\nRELATED: [THE 5 MOST POPULAR CANNABIS STRAINS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5817b52aeab4e6000a28b544/the-5-most-popular-strains-of-cannabis)\n\nGenetic sequencing technology is already being applied to ensure strain consistency. The Veterans For Cannabis Foundation (VFCF) partner growers will register the genetic fingerprint of the cannabis strains that go into VCFC’s branded cannabidiol (CBD) products.\n\n“With MGC’s StrainSEEK program we are able to take some of the guess work out of cannabis treatment in our veteran community,” said Joshua Littrell, founder of Veterans For Cannabis Foundation. “VFCF will now be able to replicate and reproduce the experience for veterans in our program. Our veterans are begging for a treatment they can trust and that is uniform. Now they can rest assured knowing they are receiving the same treatment every time.”\n\n_____________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Often, one of those qualities is the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content found in a strain—typically, the higher the THC content, the more popular the cannabis strain. Most of the five most popular marijuana strains we have selected are sativa strains. Sativas are known to provide an uplifting and energetic quality as compared to indica strains, which tend to be more calming and sedative. \n\nThe most popular marijuana strains are widely produced and sold in various states where cannabis consumption is legal. All of these marijuana strains are used for their medicinal properties, but are also used recreationally as well. We consider these classic marijuana strains, which are often recognized by name even by non-cannabis consumers.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThe five most popular marijuana strains are Blue Dream, Jack Herer, Cannatonic, Sour Diesel and OG Kush. \n\n### Popular Marijuana Strain #1: Blue Dream\n\n![Popular marijuana strain: Blue Dream](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5817b52aeab4e6000a28b544/embedded_images/5817b52eeab4e6000a28b545/Screen_Shot_2016-10-31_at_1.54.09_PM.png) \n\n[Blue Dream](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a70be4e6c30440008cafd14/blue-dream) is arguably the most popular strain of marijuana in the country. Blue Dream, which originated in California, is a sativa-dominant hybrid that’s a cross between the indica Blueberry and Haze, which is a sativa. Blue Dream is known for its high levels of THC, with percentages ranging from 17–24% and small levels of both cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG). \n\nBlue Dream is known to cause full-body relaxation, while also being mentally invigorating. This marijuana strain is known to produce a gentle and calm high without heavily sedative effects. Blue Dream is very popular with medical marijuana patients for daytime relief of pain, depression and nausea. And it’s also praised for not producing a sense of anxiety, which to many makes it a clear winner.\n\n### Popular Marijuana Strain #2: Jack Herer\n\n![Popular marijuana strain: Jack Herer](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5817b52aeab4e6000a28b544/embedded_images/5817b52feab4e6000a28b546/Screen_Shot_2016-10-31_at_1.54.31_PM.png)\n \n[Jack Herer](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cd5d1d520d60009f4f4b1/jack-herer) is another sativa-dominant hybrid that’s a cross of Haze, Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk. It originally comes from the Netherlands, where it was hailed for its medicinal properties. Jack Herer has several different phenotypes that each have unique effects. It’s known to produce happy and clear-headed effects that promote creativity. \n\nAll of the Jack Herer phenotypes are known for their quality, potency and high levels of THC. THC levels can range from 18–23%. This popular marijuana strain also has low levels of CBD and CBG. Jack Herer presents high levels of limonene, which is a terpene known to fight depression. It’s a great medical strain for stress, depression, pain, fatigue and headaches. \n\nRELATED: [THE TOP 5 MARIJUANA STRAINS FOR DEPRESSION](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57fbd5a9321b570007790312/top-5-marijuana-strains-for-depression)\n\n### Popular Marijuana Strain #3: Cannatonic\n\n![Popular marijuana strain: Cannatonic](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5817b52aeab4e6000a28b544/embedded_images/5817b59e97ed67000a00146e/Screen_Shot_2016-10-31_at_1.54.41_PM.png)\n\n[Cannatonic](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce5dcd520d60009f4f4bd/cannatonic) is known as one of the most premier medical marijuana strains. It’s also known for its relatively low THC content, below 6%, and a high CBD content of about 6–17%. Cannatonic is a hybrid strain that comes from a cross of MK Ultra and G13 Haze. It’s known for its mellow effects, which don’t produce a strong high, but rather a very relaxing effect. Cannatonic has great pain-relieving qualities, and it works to reduce inflammation, muscle spasms, anxiety and migraines. \n\nCannatonic produces happy and uplifting feelings without high levels of psychoactivity. It’s considered a borderline marijuana strain because it usually doesn’t produce psychoactive effects due to its higher levels of CBD. However, it still may impart a high if a patient is particularly sensitive. Its balance of THC and CBD make it a popular choice for people seeking strong pain relief without a prominent high.\n\n### Popular Marijuana Strain #4: Sour Diesel\n\n![Popular marijuana strain: Sour Diesel](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5817b52aeab4e6000a28b544/embedded_images/5817b59f97ed67000a00146f/Screen_Shot_2016-10-31_at_1.56.24_PM.png)\n\n[Sour Diesel](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cd299d520d60009f4f4ae/sour-diesel) is a sativa strain that’s known for its energizing and intense cerebral effects. It’s also known to provide long-lasting relief for people who experience stress and pain. Sour Diesel contains high levels of THC, which range from 19–25%. This popular cannabis strain provides uplifting and happy effects known to fight off stress and fatigue thereby allowing people to power through their day. This marijuana strain is a favorite among medical marijuana patients because of its steady and long-lasting effects. \n\n### Popular Marijuana Strain #5: OG Kush\n\n![Popular marijuana strain: OG Kush](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5817b52aeab4e6000a28b544/embedded_images/5817b5c9d51cbd0007d68974/Screen_Shot_2016-10-31_at_2.20.40_PM.png)\n\n[OG Kush](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cce66d520d60009f4f4ab/og-kush) is one of the most well-known marijuana strains on the market. It’s known for its high levels of THC, which can reach up to 26%. OG Kush is also known to produce extreme happiness and euphoria, as well as relaxed and calming effects. This sought-after marijuana strain has fairly high levels of psychoactivity, and it also has great medical benefits. \n\nMedicinal marijuana patients have found OG Kush to be very helpful with migraines and stress-related problems. It’s also been helpful in easing with pain and insomnia.
