In the US, more than 65 percent of people [surveyed in 2019](https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/brochures-and-fact-sheets/alcohol-facts-and-statistics) said they drank alcohol in the past year – and nearly 60 percent of them had had at least one drink in the previous week.  \n\nIn 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic gripped most of the world, Americans [drank considerably more than usual](https://www.bu.edu/articles/2021/alcohol-consumption-has-spiked-during-the-pandemic-could-the-consequences-outlast-coronavirus/) , too.  Factors like stress and isolation accounted for a 14 percent jump in American alcohol consumption during that year alone.\n\nAlcohol has [a long list of effects on the body and brain](https://www.healthline.com/health/alcohol/effects-on-body). And while it may make you feel good for a while, none of these effects are good for your health. Now, though, research reveals that cannabis [can be a safer alternative](https://drugabuse.com/blog/marijuana-vs-alcohol) that meets many of the reasons people choose to drink. Here's why – and how – to make the switch.\n\n### How Does Alcohol Affect the Body – and Mind?\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-10-20 at 8.04.05 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_10_20_at_8_04_05_PM_4299d629b0.png)\nAlcohol affects the body and mind in numerous ways.\n\n\"Alcohol' is an umbrella term for all kinds of beverages that contain ethanol or ethyl alcohol. This chemical forms when yeast ferments, or breaks down, natural sugars found in foods like grapes (for making wine) or malted barley, used to make beer.\n\nBut ethanol is also a toxin – [a volatile chemical](https://www.ehs.com/2014/04/ethanol-versatile-common-and-potentially-dangerous/) found in varnishes, nail polish remover, gasoline, and solvents. It's responsible for the many effects of drinking alcohol, ranging from pleasant relaxation to nausea, blackouts, as well as liver damage.\n\n### Alcohol Disrupts Messaging in the Brain\nThe most visible effects of alcohol come from its [effects on the brain]\n(https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/alcohols-effects-health/alcohols-effects-body#:~:text=Alcohol%20interferes%20with%20the%20brain's,clearly%20and%20move%20with%20coordination). Ethanol disrupts messaging between neurotransmitters – the \"chemicals\" that regulate mood, cognition, and other functions such as motor skills.\n\nEthanol boosts the effects of inhibitory, or calming, substances such as GABA (gamma-Aminobutyric acid) and serotonin.  At the same time, it inhibits excitatory or stimulating neurotransmitters such as glutamine and adenosine. These processes account for the short-term effects of relaxation and elevated mood.\n\nBut with long-term, sustained alcohol use, the brain adjusts to the presence of ethanol. That's why people who drink frequently need to drink more and more to get the same effects.  \n\nDisruptions in the brain's communication pathways account for the familiar signs of intoxication, such as slurred speech, poor coordination, and impaired judgment.  When blood alcohol levels get too high, too fast, \"blackouts\" can happen as the brain's ability to form and store new memories is impaired.\n\n### Alcohol Affects Multiple Organs\nAlong with its effects on the brain, ethanol also affects many of the body's other systems and functions. The sugars in alcohol can affect the body's ability to produce and regulate insulin, contributing to developing diabetes. Ethanol can also affect the cardiovascular system, raising the risk of stroke, hypertension, and heart problems.\n\nOver time, alcohol can destroy liver function, leading to conditions such as alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis. It can inflame the pancreas, causing chronic pancreatitis. Ethanol can also affect the texture and appearance of the skin, causing it to age prematurely.\n\n### What About Marijuana?\nAlcohol's effects on the body aren't all bad. Numerous studies indicate that a moderate intake of red wine might support heart health, thanks to the polyphenols in grapes. But now, research reveals that cannabis can have the same relaxing and uplifting effects as alcohol without the potential risks and side effects. What's more, cannabis has documented health benefits as well.\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-10-20 at 8.05.38 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_10_20_at_8_05_38_PM_399b8b1839.png)\nFor many, marijuana is replacing alcohol consumption.\n\nHere are six benefits of consuming cannabis instead of alcohol.\n\n### 1. Cannabis works with your body, not against it\n\nConsuming cannabis in any form activates receptors in the body's endocannabinoid system, a comprehensive network of cell receptors that responds both to natural cannabinoids produced by the body and to compounds in the cannabis plant.\nThe endocannabinoid system plays a role in moderating pain, regulating mood, and supporting balance among the body's many subsystems. But the body has no natural ethanol receptors, so when someone consumes alcohol, the tissues and cells respond to it as a toxic substance.\n\n### 2. Cannabis reduces stress and anxiety\n\nCannabis has a long history of [promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-does-weed-get-you-high-and-make-you-feel-good). Cannabis promotes the release of the brain's \"feel good\" chemicals, such as dopamine and GABA, which support calmness and a positive mood.  \n\n### 3. Cannabis has few side effects  \n\nAlthough it can take some experimenting to discover the right products and dosage, cannabis generally has minimal side effects for most people. There are exceptions, though. Consuming too much THC can cause symptoms including a racing heart, paranoia, and confusion. Heavy cannabis use in those under 18 can contribute to memory and learning problems. Some people can suffer from a condition called cannabis hyperemesis syndrome causes nausea and vomiting.\n\n### 4. Cannabis overuse isn't fatal \n\nToo much alcohol can be fatal, either by overloading the body with toxins or contributing to other risky actions such as drunk driving or combining alcohol and drugs. But according to the [National Institute on Drug Abuse](https://www.popsci.com/overdose-on-weed-marijuana/), there has been no report of an adult death solely caused by too much cannabis consumption.\n\n### 5. Cannabis can help you sleep  \n\nMany people claim that a glass of wine or a few beers can help them get to sleep, but the sugars in alcoholic drinks can disrupt the body's insulin regulation and interfere with the deeper stages of sleep.  But cannabis, especially products that are high in CBD, [can promote relaxation and restful sleep](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-sleep-disorders-cannabis-can-help-alleviate) because they work with the body's natural regulatory systems.\n\nPeople are always looking for ways to feel better, and medical experts agree that a few drinks here and there aren't likely to be harmful. But weed in all its many forms can replace your booze of choice, with considerable benefits for the body and mind. \n\n### 6. Cannabis won't make you gain weight\n\nAlcohol is full of empty calories and loads of sugar. It's pretty easy to consume 2000 calories in one night of binge drinking. It's a long-standing joke that people who consume marijuana get the ['munchies'](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-are-munchies-and-why-do-you-get-them-when-you-smoke-weed) and overeat in front of the fridge late at night. But, the reality is, people who consume cannabis regularly tend to [have slimmer waistlines](https://www.businessinsider.com/pot-smokers-are-skinnier-and-healthier-2013-5#:~:text=Reuters%20A%20new%20study%20suggests,smoked%20in%20the%20last%20month.).\n \n### Get Your Medical Cannabis Card Online\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Due to the gender gap in clinical trials, women are also far more likely to suffer the adverse side effects of medications. \n\n### Women's Health is Overlooked \n[Research](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/08/200812161318.htm) from the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Chicago suggests this is because drug dosages are largely based on clinical trials conducted on men. The theory of the one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work when it comes to drug discovery and development. \n\nIrving Zucker, a professor emeritus of psychology and of integrative biology at UC Berkeley, says, \"For decades, women have been excluded from clinical drug trials based, in part, on unfounded concerns that female hormone fluctuations render women difficult to study.\"\n\nTo complicate matters, medical professionals often downplay women's health issues, and female health problems are vastly under-researched. One school of thought believes that the problem exists because funding and research panels have historically been male-dominated. \n\nBut overall, female reproductive health, among other conditions, are under-addressed. A good example is endometriosis; although this condition affects 1 in 10 women, the same number as diabetes, it has a fraction of research funding. When we look at the bigger picture, medicinal options for female-focused care is limited if not anitquated. Amy Miller, Ph.D. and CEO of the [Society for Women's Health Research](https://nypost.com/2019/08/05/medicine-ignored-womens-health-for-years-thats-finally-changing/) says, \"Women's health has pretty much been ignored in biomedical pathology for our entire human history.\"\n\n### Cannabis as a Natural Medicine \n\nAlthough women's health issues have been overlooked by mainstream drug discovery and development, medical cannabis is a natural solution that helps millions of women feel better. Cannabis is not only a natural anti-inflammatory, for many people, it can help relieve anxiety, depression and improve the overall quality of sleep. \n\nIt has also proven effective for women suffering from PMS, whether it be body aches or menstrual cramping, to those feeling the general malaise and difficulties of transitioning into menopause. Dr. Julie Holland, a psychopharmacology specialist and well-known author of the book [Moody Bitches](https://www.amazon.com/Moody-Bitches-Taking-Missing-Having/dp/0143107909) says, \n\n\"In general, women are much more likely to be diagnosed with depression and anxiety than men, which means they are being prescribed antidepressants more than men are. Cannabis can potentially help with many symptoms that women who take antidepressants (as well as those who don’t) experience—including irritability, insomnia, depression, and anxiety.\"\n\nDr. Holland goes on to explain that the reason cannabis is so effective is due to its interaction with our body's endocannabinoid system. She says, \n\"Stress and inflammation are inextricably linked, and the key to combating both lies in a system called the endocannabinoid system, which is made of cannabis receptors throughout the body and internal cannabis-like molecules. \n\nWhen stress nearly knocks you overboard, your internal cannabinoid system helps to right the ship....cannabinoids (from cannabis) tamp down inflammation and reactivity in the body, maintaining your metabolism, immune functioning, learning and growing processes. The endocannabinoid system is involved in nearly everything we do: eating, sleeping, exercising, having sex, giving birth, and nursing.\"\n\nBelow we list five conditions where cannabis may be an effective remedy or complement to traditional pharmaceuticals and western intervention.\n\n### Fibromyalgia\n\n[Fibromyalgia](https://hellomd.com/articles/alternative-and-emerging-treatments-for-fibromyalgia-subheading:-could-one-of-them-work-for-you/) is a complex, irritating, and difficult condition with few medical answers. It affects over four million adults, and primarily women. The disease is mainly associated with widespread pain across the body, including muscles, tendons, and tissues. Unfortunately, there is no resolution as to why fibromyalgia happens to some and not others; however, it is linked to acute stress.\n\nIn a 2011 study, the majority of participants found that their [fibromyalgia symptoms became measurably more tolerable](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0018440) after taking cannabis. Not only did participants feel their pain symptoms decreased, but they also noted improvements in their quality of life. It's believed that THC, CBD and numerous other cannabinoids help to bolster a flagging endocannabinoid system, reestablishing homeostasis within the body.\n\n### Anxiety\nDuring this past pandemic year, [four out of ten American adults](https://www.kff.org/coronavirus-covid-19/issue-brief/the-implications-of-covid-19-for-mental-health-and-substance-use/#:~:text=During%20the%20pandemic%2C%20about%204,June%202019%20Figure%201) reported having symptoms of anxiety. That’s a fourfold increase from 2019 when just one in ten Americans were experiencing those symptoms. [Anxiety](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-decrease-social-anxiety-as-the-covid-pandemic-winds-down/) is one of the most common mental disorders and can be incredibly debilitating.\n\nCBD is one of the most well-known cannabinoids within the cannabis sativa plant. It’s non-intoxicating, which means you will not feel the typical high associated with THC. CBD is ideal for those who suffer from anxiety as it can help to balance mood and support the production of brain chemicals that produce feelings of calm and well-being.\n\nCBD also supports the activity of other neurotransmitters that can quell the intensity of anxiety. Serotonin is a well-known “feel good” chemical that helps us \"feel good\". Meanwhile, CBD excites thethe brain’s serotonin receptors, which allows the brain’s natural production of serotonin and encourages its mood-boosting effects.\n\n### Migraines\n\n[Migraines](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-does-cannabis-work-to-relieve-migraines/) can be excruciating. The symptoms may include a throbbing headache, nausea and a heightened sensitivity to sensory stimuli like light, sounds, flavors, smells or touch. You may even experience an aura, a visual experience caused by migraine pain which may partially or fully block vision for some time.\n\nSimilar to fibromyalgia, the endocannabinoid system may play a role in migraines. An endocannabinoid deficiency may actually be one of the primary reasons migraines occur in the first place.Generally, the most effective cannabis products for migraines are typically high in CBD.\n\nThat said, everyone has a unique endocannabinoid system and biochemistry—so experimentation is necessary and a high ratio of CBD to THC may work best or for many, a one to one ratio of CBD to THC works best for chronic pain.\n\n### PMS\n[PMS or premenstrual syndrome](https://hellomd.com/articles/womens-health-and-marijuana-pms-dysmenorrhea-and-menopause/) encompasses a wide range of unpleasant symptoms including: bloating, fatigue, headaches, cramping, lower back pain, breast swelling and tenderness, constipation, diarrhea, and change in mood. These symptoms can start two weeks before your menstrual period or a few days leading up to it. Although the cause of PMS is unknown it is believed to be linked to the hormonal fluctuations that occur during a woman's cycle.\n\nMany women feel the effects of PMS during their lifetime, and some have a more severe form, PMDD—premenstrual dysphoric disorder, which [affects 3% to 8% of women during menstrual years](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24161307). PMDD wreaks havoc on women's lives, and can in some cases, leads to suicidal ideation.\n\nThere are no set cannabis dosages to alleviate PMS symptoms, but a good place to start is with a high CBD to THC ratio, due to CBD’s anti-inflammatory and mood-balancing properties. THC can help some women alleviate the physical pain associated with PMS, especially with cramping. When pain is acute vaping, or smoking flower, can help  \n\n### Menopause\nPeri menopause, or the phase of life that happens just before a woman hits menopause, and menopause, is a normal phase of life during a woman's life. This transition, which in the past was somewhat taboo,  signals the end of reproductive years. But in recent years, to many women, it signals not only a new chapter but a new lease on life.\n\nUnfortunately, the fluctuation of hormones during this time can cause some unwanted side effects such as mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats, disregulated sleep, thinning hair, changes in muscle tone, sexual dysfunction, and more.\n\nMany women turn to cannabis during this transition for the mood-regulating, and anti-inflammatory benefits mentioned earlier. But cannabis has something additional to offer: phytoestrogens. This plant-based hormone is similar to human estrogen in many ways and can help to make up for the estrogen dip experienced during perimenopause and menopause. If you’re ready to give cannabis and its hit of phytoestrogens a whirl, you may consider trying cannabis strains containing higher CBD ratios to THC.\n\nDr. Julie Holland believes cannabis is a powerful aid for women entering, or within, menopause, \"CBD can help with anxiety and THC can help with mood swings, irritability, and low resilience (your ability to handle stress).\"","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/ee604/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.png","srcSet":"/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/69585/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.png 200w,\n/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/497c6/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.png 400w,\n/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/ee604/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.png 800w,\n/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/f3583/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/58556/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/61e93/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.webp 200w,\n/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/1f5c5/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.webp 400w,\n/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/58556/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.webp 800w,\n/static/7483fc3e839c9b5e47e7a8a6db15e12e/99238/e7b1d61922fa784eb6de66e879798f6b.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3177-markdown","title":"Detox into the New Year with Cannabis, an Infrared Sauna and a Vegan Plant-Based Diet","slug":"detox-into-the-new-year-with-cannabis-an-infrared-sauna-and-a-vegan-plant-based-diet","content":"It's a new year – out with the old, and in with new. And a short detox that promises to cleanse the body and reset the mind just is where to start. With a focus on healthy, unprocessed foods and infrared heat to eliminate toxins, with a little cannabis thrown in to keep the body in balance, this seven-day detox can help you ring in the new year on a healthier, happier note.\n\n### What's a Detox?\n\nDetox – short for detoxification – regimens come in many forms, but they all aim to help cleanse the body from toxins absorbed from foods and the environment.  Advocates say that detoxing creates a \"clean slate\" that prepares the body for a new, healthier way of living.\n\nWe take in toxins every day from a variety of sources. Many are found in foods, including additives like artificial flavors and preservatives, colorings, and heavy metals, mainly from fish and other seafood.  Heavily processed food that contains large amounts of fats and sugars can also add a toxic load.  The body can also absorb toxins from polluted air, unfiltered water, and household solvents. Toxins in clothing can also be absorbed through the skin.\n\nThe body has its own system for clearing toxins – the bloodstream, liver, and kidneys.  But detox advocates say that specific detox regimens designed to eliminate toxins can help those organs and systems function better and remain healthy.  \n\nMainstream medical professionals aren't so sure, though. [Many point out](https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/detoxes-and-cleanses-what-you-need-to-know)\n that the body's filtering system will naturally take care of toxins. Medical professionals say it's more important to focus on boosting the immune system and staying healthy than undertaking a detox.\n\nIn some cases, too, detoxing can be dangerous. Some detox regimens involve fasting, limiting the intake of certain foods and beverages, or other strategies that could pose risks for people with diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart problems.  \n\nIn general, though, [doctors say](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/detox-diets/faq-20058040#:~:text=However%2C%20there's%20little%20evidence%20that,and%20eliminating%20most%20ingested%20toxins) that for most people, a short detox likely isn't harmful and could be beneficial if it eliminates unhealthy foods and promotes exercise or other healthy habits.\n\nDetoxes can be as short as a few days or as long as a month, and they can include a wide range of activities and food choices ranging from intermittent fasting to juice cleanses and \"green eating.\" Many detoxes also include [sweat-inducing activities](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3312275/)  like saunas, hot yoga, or exercise to help clear toxins through the skin.   \n\nThis 7 day New Year detox combines all of these elements, emphasizing rebalancing the body's many systems and boosting its natural defenses against disease.\n\n### Cleanse With Cannabis\n\nIn times past, cannabis would have been one of the things you detox from, not with. But today's research reveals that cannabis in its many forms has an important role to play in maintaining balance among the body's many systems.  The cannabis sativa plant contains more than one hundred cannabinoid compounds, including the well-known psychoactive THC (delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), an immune-boosting compound with no psychoactive effects.  \n\nThe endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a vast network of cell receptors found in human organs and tissues, including the brain and skin. It responds to natural cannabinoids produced by the body, including cannabinoids from cannabis and a few other plant sources.  \n\nThis system plays an important role in [maintaining homeostasis, or balance](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/marijuana-cannabinoids-and-homeostasis-a-balancing-act), in functions such as regulating temperature and modulating immune responses.  \n\nCannabis compounds like THC and CBD appear to be [adaptogenic](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/adaptogens-what-are-they-and-how-to-combine-them-with-cbd) – they work with the endocannabinoid system to damp down over functioning systems and boost the responses of those that aren't performing at optimum levels.  In that way, cannabis can support immune functioning, reduce inflammation and moderate mood.\n\nThat's why [some cannabis advocates think](https://www.wellandgood.com/marijuana-detox-healthy-cleanses/)\n that cannabis can be a beneficial addition to a detox routine. To try it out, make healthy eating the centerpiece of your detox week. Omit processed foods, sugar, unhealthy fats, and alcohol.  Focus on eating plant-based foods that include plenty of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables with no additives or preservatives.\n\nCannabis can be worked into your detox in a variety of ways. Make your own cannabis-infused edibles, or try vaping or a CBD tincture. But smoking cannabis can defeat the purpose of your detox because it can create toxins of its own from combustion.\n\n### Healthy Heat with an Infrared Sauna\n\nSweating is a natural way to eliminate toxins – and if you're generally healthy, an [infrared sauna can be a safe way](https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/article/biohacking-articles/science-of-sauna/) to add the benefits of sweating to your detox without exposure to the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.  \n\nInfrared light is used in pediatric hospitals to keep vulnerable newborns warm, and for adults, it may have benefits including pain relief, support for wound healing, and improved flexibility.  Infrared saunas – an enclosed area bathed in infrared light – are often used by physical therapists and chiropractors to help loosen tight muscles and relieve aches and pains. Some research also suggests that infrared sauna treatments can benefit conditions such as congestive heart failure, dementia, and diabetes.   \n\nPersonal infrared saunas are available from natural wellness and home furnishing companies in a range of sizes and prices. You can also wrap yourself in an [infrared sauna blanket](https://goop.com/wellness/detox/infrared-sauna-blanket/), which provides the same sweat-inducing heat in any comfortable place.  Medical experts say that an infrared sauna provides benefits similar to moderate exercise, such as working up a good sweat and elevating the heart rate.\n\n### A Plant-Based Vegan Diet\n\nMany harsh detox plans place tight restrictions on eating and drinking. But basing your detox on a [plant-based vegan diet](http://www.eatingwell.com/article/291280/7-day-vegan-sugar-detox-meal-plan/) is good both for your health and for the environment.  A weeklong detox that's fueled by plenty of fruits, vegetables and plant-based proteins such as lentils, tofu and chickpeas can provide energy and a long list of essential nutrients that support the immune system and reduce inflammation.\n\nTo make the switch to vegan plant-based eating, eliminate dairy products, animal proteins, eggs, and processed foods. Substitute almond, soy or oatmilk for dairy milk, and switch out meat for the many alternatives that range from the familiar veggie burger to plant-based versions of things like tuna, sausage, and deli sliced meats.  Or consider the humble but versatile tofu as a base for many dishes. Cannabis can also be added to a wide variety of veggie-based foods for added immune system and detox support.\n\nA short detox program can help to cleanse both the body and mind of accumulated toxins.  Our detox suggestions can help rebalance and nourish the body for a healthier new year – and beyond.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5151515151515151,"src":"/static/ea1843aa3ab39ffa39471897fe8bda77/ee604/f4c41d9e9a3b2fb092e9bfbd26cac05a.png","srcSet":"/static/ea1843aa3ab39ffa39471897fe8bda77/69585/f4c41d9e9a3b2fb092e9bfbd26cac05a.png 200w,\n/static/ea1843aa3ab39ffa39471897fe8bda77/497c6/f4c41d9e9a3b2fb092e9bfbd26cac05a.png 400w,\n/static/ea1843aa3ab39ffa39471897fe8bda77/ee604/f4c41d9e9a3b2fb092e9bfbd26cac05a.png 800w,\n/static/ea1843aa3ab39ffa39471897fe8bda77/f3583/f4c41d9e9a3b2fb092e9bfbd26cac05a.png 1200w,\n/static/ea1843aa3ab39ffa39471897fe8bda77/59098/f4c41d9e9a3b2fb092e9bfbd26cac05a.png 1416w","srcWebp":"/static/ea1843aa3ab39ffa39471897fe8bda77/58556/f4c41d9e9a3b2fb092e9bfbd26cac05a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/ea1843aa3ab39ffa39471897fe8bda77/61e93/f4c41d9e9a3b2fb092e9bfbd26cac05a.webp 200w,\n/static/ea1843aa3ab39ffa39471897fe8bda77/1f5c5/f4c41d9e9a3b2fb092e9bfbd26cac05a.webp 400w,\n/static/ea1843aa3ab39ffa39471897fe8bda77/58556/f4c41d9e9a3b2fb092e9bfbd26cac05a.webp 800w,\n/static/ea1843aa3ab39ffa39471897fe8bda77/99238/f4c41d9e9a3b2fb092e9bfbd26cac05a.webp 1200w,\n/static/ea1843aa3ab39ffa39471897fe8bda77/8905b/f4c41d9e9a3b2fb092e9bfbd26cac05a.webp 1416w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3175-markdown","title":"The Skin Microbiome & the Role Cannabinoids Play in Keeping it Healthy","slug":"the-skin-microbiome-and-the-role-cannabinoids-play-in-keeping-it-healthy","content":"The skin is the body's largest organ, and it's home to more than 1000 different kinds of bacteria and over 80 unique fungi. This living collection of beneficial flora is called the skin microbiome, and it's an essential part of the body's defenses. \n\nThe skin biome is a relatively recent discovery, and scientists are still working to understand its secrets. But research is now revealing that cannabinoid compounds such as CBD can play a significant role in keeping our skin flora healthy, thanks to the many cannabinoid receptors found in the tissues of the skin.\n\n### Inside the Skin Microbiome\n\nHuman cells make up just 43 percent of the total cell count in the human body. The rest consists of microbes. They [form multiple biomes](https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/mar/26/the-human-microbiome-why-our-microbes-could-be-key-to-our-health), or colonies of hundreds or thousands of different strains of bacteria, viruses, fungi and strange organisms called archaea. \n\nThe best known and most thoroughly researched microbiomes is the gut biome, a complex colony of bacterial strains that process food for nutrients, maintain healthy digestion, and support the immune system.  Other biomes exist on our bodies. These include the mouth and vagina, and they're now studied for their effects on human health.\n\n\nRecently, the skin microbiome has captured researchers' attention in fields as diverse as neurobiology and cosmetics. That's because [the skin is the body's first defense](https://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-23996/your-skin-microbiome-why-its-essential-for-a-healthy-glow.html) against external assaults such as toxins, allergens, wounds, and infectious agents such as hostile bacteria and viruses. \n\nWe now know overexposure to sunlight can damage the skin's protective microbiome. Sun exposure can cause wrinkles, keratosis, and even the dangerous skin cancer melanoma.\n\nThe skin's microbiome [shares some features of the gut microbiome](https://goop.com/wellness/health/the-good-skin-healthy-gut-guide-to-probiotics/), suggesting a relationship that has profound implications for immune system functioning and mood regulation.  \n\nFor example, stress can cause digestive distress and also skin breakouts, and so can responses to some allergens and toxins. Likewise, improving the diet and avoiding certain triggering foods can also improve skin health. Researchers have also uncovered relationships between mood, skin health, and obesity.\n\nThe skin microbiome is more than skin-deep, too. Its beneficial bacteria and other organisms are also found in the skin's deeper layers, down to the subcutaneous fat layer that protects the muscles and bones.  \n\nLike other biomes, the skin microbiome has multiple functions. Along with protecting the skin itself from invaders, a healthy skin biome also contributes to cell turnover, supports immune responses, and reduces inflammation.  \n\nBut this important biome can also be compromised by factors such as stress, illness, poor diet, and lack of sleep. Dehydration can also affect the skin biome, causing the skin to dry out and reducing the amount of sebum, or oil, that some strains of skin bacteria need to survive.  \n\n### Keeping the Skin Microbiome Healthy\n\nUnder many circumstances, the state of someone's skin is a window into the state of their overall health. And many skin conditions such as psoriasis, acne, and eczema can be improved or worsened by other factors that affect general health.\n\nIn general, keeping the skin's multifaceted microbiome healthy is no different than taking steps to promote overall health.  A high-quality diet that includes plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and healthy oils such as olive oil and avocados can nourish the skin. \n\nDrinking plenty of water can also help keep the skin hydrated and promote sebum production, so that the skin looks plump and soft.  Sleep can also support the skin microbiome and prevent \"bags\" and dark circles under the eyes.\n\nNew knowledge about the workings of the skin microbiome has also fueled the production of several skin product lines that use recent research to guide the development of serums, creams, and other treatments for smoother, softer skin.\n\nBut recent research also reveals that cannabis compounds such as CBD can also promote a healthy skin biome because they work with the body's system of cannabinoid receptors – the endocannabinoid system.\n\n### The Endocannabinoid System Supports the Skin Microbiome\n\nThe endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a network of cell receptors that respond to cannabinoid compounds. These compounds called endocannabinoids, are naturally produced by the body. But these receptors can also be activated by cannabinoids from outside sources, mainly compounds found in the cannabis plant.  \n\nThe endocannabinoid system plays a major role in maintaining homeostasis, or balance, among the body's many subsystems. It supports many processes related to regulating mood, supporting the immune system, and protecting cell health. Cannabinoid receptors are found in tissues throughout the body – and they occur abundantly in the skin.\n\nJust as the endocannabinoid system as a whole helps to support homeostasis in the body as a whole, the skin's system of endocannabinoid receptors [work to keep the skin's microbiome and tissues healthy](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6429381/) and free of inflammation.  \n\nWhen this system, which some researchers have called the \"cutaneous cannabinoid system,\" doesn't function properly, skin disorders such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis can develop or flare-up.  Healthy habits such as exercise and plenty of sleep can help the body to produce its own cannabinoids. But, you can give the ECS, and the skin microbiome, a boost with cannabis and a variety of cannabis-infused skin products.\n\n### How to Support the Skin With Cannabinoids\n\nThe endocannabinoid system supports immune functioning and helps to reduce inflammation throughout the body. Consuming cannabinoid compounds such as cannabidiol, or CBD, in any form can help to reduce inflammation and irritation on the skin.   For example, cannabis oils, tinctures, and edibles can [reduce the redness and swelling of psoriasis and eczema](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabinoids-cbd-thc-and-cbg-may-relieve-psoriasis-symptoms), and research shows that [CBD can be an effective treatment for acne](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-help-fight-acne).\n\nBut many new skincare lines are offering [topical products](https://www.wellandgood.com/cannabis-skin-care-cbd-anti-inflammatory-beauty-products/) that contain CBD isolates or full-spectrum cannabis oil, which contains all the compounds and terpenes found in the cannabis marijuana plant.   Many CBD-infused products are derived from hemp, a variant of the cannabis plant that 0.03% of THC (delta 9 tetrahydrocannabiniol) or less.\n\nThese cannabis-enriched skincare products include serums, creams, lotions, and even CBD-infused lip balm. \nThey [help balance the skin's microbiome](https://www.hyperbiotics.com/blogs/recent-articles/inside-look-hemp-extract-and-the-microbiome) and activate endocannabinoid receptors in the skin's upper layers to reduce inflammation and irritation from unhealthy bacteria collected in pores and hair follicles.  \n\nIf you'd like to give cannabis-infused skin products a try, look for products with all-natural ingredients and no harmful chemicals, and make sure that cannabis or CBD is high on the ingredient list.  \n\nThe skin is the body's first line of defense, and the many inhabitants of the skin microbiome work hard to keep it healthy. Now, a large and growing list of cannabis-based cosmetics and skin treatments can boost the power of the biome and keep skin looking its best.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/ee604/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png","srcSet":"/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/69585/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 200w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/497c6/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 400w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/ee604/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 800w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/f3583/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 1200w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/49ccb/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.png 1426w","srcWebp":"/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/58556/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/61e93/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 200w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/1f5c5/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 400w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/58556/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 800w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/99238/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 1200w,\n/static/a1e74def50285a6b2b9131b58b237fe6/68892/d5a6b4ceac7a4b8eff1fe2a83df53a1a.webp 1426w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3129-markdown","title":"THCP and CBDP: Two New Cannabinoids Discovered by Scientists","slug":"thcp-and-cbdp-two-new-cannabinoids-discovered-by-scientists","content":"Modern research on cannabis dates back decades, to when Professor Raphael Mechoulam from Israel discovered the first isolate phytocannabinoid, THC, in the early 1960s. This followed the discovery of a long list of isolate compounds ranging to over hundred potential cannabinoids. \n\nOver the years, we discovered that it’s possible to have two versions of the same cannabinoid compounds, as in the case of THCA and THC. The difference between the two is that THC holds its carboxyl acid group, meaning it only exists in raw plants that have not combusted. THCA loses the carboxyl acid upon exposure to high temperature, and it becomes THC.\n\nRecently two more cannabinoids have been discovered within the cannabis plant, showing that the book has yet to close on cannabinoid discovery The first, Tetrahydrocannabiphorol (THCP), imitates the same rough structure as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). \n\nTHC is one of the main compounds in cannabis, which is responsible for the mind-altering psychoactive effects. Though THCP has a similar structure to THC, studies show that THCP is 30 times more powerful than the psychoactive THC.\n\nThe second cannabinoid, identified as cannabidiphorol (CBDP), links to CBD and may have additional benefits as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-convulsant. \n\nFurthermore, it’s does not create heavy psychoactivity, similar to its close cousin CBD. The main difference between these four compounds is that while THCP and CBDP have seven links each in their side-chain, the other two THC and CBD only contain five links.\n\n### What are Cannabinoids?\n\nCannabis strains vary from plant to plant and these differences are due to the chemicals cannabinoids and terpenes. Most people believe that cannabinoids, as well as terpenes, are responsible for the difference in levels of different strains and effects on the body. \n\nThere are more than a hundred [cannabinoids](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5938896/), but researchers believe that only the THC causes the “high” feel linked with the use of marijuana. \n\nThe discovery of two new cannabinoids begs to differ with this claim as one of these compounds is psychoactive, as stated above. This discovery shows that we are just starting to scratch the surface behind the science of marijuana. \n\n### How THCP works?\n\nThe newly discovered cannabinoids could be the answer to the use of specifically targeted properties and aspects of marijuana. It could be possible to grow a strain of cannabis that has THCP as the primarily dominant strain. Therefore, we can derive the compound for creating cannabis-infused products that allow users to enjoy its therapeutic and medical benefits.\n\nAccording to the group of researchers, as they described in their [report in the journal Nature](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-019-56785-1), they isolated the two cannabinoids whereby the THCP can interact with the CB1 and CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system found in the human body.\n\nTypically a cannabinoid needs to have at least three rings for it to bind with CB1; THC has five of these rings. A cannabinoid with more than five rings would connect smoothly with the body's receptors. Eight carbon rings would be an absolute wonder capable of producing a strong biological response. Unfortunately, no such compound was known until THCP, which boasts of seven carbon rings.\n\n### Medical Implications of Discovery\n\nIt’s not yet clear if CBDP holds any extra therapeutic values. On the other hand, THCP could be the next big promise to enter medical cannabis research.\n\nTHC only requires three links to interact with cannabinoid receptors. However, scientists realized that the ability to bind peaks when it’s at eight links, then this ability starts to reduce. THCP is much closer to this peak than any other known cannabinoid.\n\nIf this is the case, the medical benefits of THC can rise tremendously with the addition of THCP. This possible booster could help THC deliver benefits such as relief for pain, nausea, and more.\n\nScientists believe that this discovery can help them understand how different cannabis strains cause diverse effects. They claim that they are not aware of any other naturally occurring phytocannabinoid with such a structure, they hope to use it to understand different results caused by cannabis and to use the same to promote healing and wellness.\n\nWith such a discovery, more and more people can benefit from the therapeutic and medical benefits of marijuana in a higher and more potent dose. It also shows that we still have a lot more to learn about cannabis.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3793103448275863,"src":"/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/6de1f/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.png","srcSet":"/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/69585/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.png 200w,\n/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/497c6/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.png 400w,\n/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/6de1f/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.png 778w","srcWebp":"/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/cdd77/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/61e93/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.webp 200w,\n/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/1f5c5/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.webp 400w,\n/static/1b94d8aeb6e35bcb7ce366d8443a1cb8/cdd77/8e58f3c478a99da955fff73e91798484.webp 778w","sizes":"(max-width: 778px) 100vw, 778px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3102-markdown","title":"Purchasing CBD Products – What's Real and What's Fake?","slug":"purchasing-cbd-products-whats-real-and-whats-fake","content":"The CBD trend has gone global, and currently it seems as if everyone has something to say about the health benefits found within this cannabinoid from the cannabis plant. Maybe you've heard the stories of CBD stopping children from having seizures or your next-door neighbor has told you it's helping her with her crippling anxiety. \n\nDue to the word-of-mouth viral nature of CBD, there's a dizzying array of new products hitting the shelves daily. With this flurry of new products, including such far-flung concepts as a CBD infused clothing line, it's hard to know which CBD product may have real therapeutic benefit vs. a bottle of snake oil jumping on the marketing bandwagon.\n\n### CBD Benefits\n\nCBD, or cannabidiol, is one of the most prevalent cannabinoids within the cannabis plant. This cannabinoid, unlike THC, is non-intoxicating, which is one of the many reasons it's gained mainstream popularity so quickly. Research has shown CBD to be an excellent [anti-inflammatory](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3371734/) \n, an [anti-spasmodic](https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-approves-first-drug-comprised-active-ingredient-derived-marijuana-treat-rare-severe-forms) \n, and it helps many people combat anxiety effectively. Some new studies have shown it helps combat [chronic pain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3371734/) \n and may be beneficial for some [neurological symptoms](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22716160l) \n, as well as help in the fight with certain types of [addiction](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23685330) \n, among other positive benefits. To be clear, CBD is not a cure for any health condition, but many people have found CBD to help with symptoms caused by a medical condition. Overall, CBD seems to be a positive therapeutic addition to a wellness routine with minimal, if any, side effects.\n\n### How It Works\n\nWithin our body, we have an [endocannabinoid system](https://hellomd.com/blogs/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) full of CB1 and CB2 receptors. These receptors are found in the brain, organs, connective tissue, glands, and immune cells, and are essential to the function of almost all parts of the human body. It's believed that CB1 receptors, which are related to mood, pain, movement, emotions, appetite, and other functions, react more readily to the cannabinoid THC. CB2 receptors are related to inflammation, the immune system as well as also pain, and are thought to interact more efficiently with CBD. \n\nOur body produces endocannabinoids which interact with our CB1 and CB2 receptors, likewise, these same receptors respond to the phyto cannabinoids produced within the cannabis plant. It's believed that cannabinoids, whether created within our body, or from the cannabis plant, help to create homeostasis within our body. When we introduce phyto cannabinoids into our body, we stimulate or mimic our own cannabinoid production, and we may also increase the actual number of receptors within our body. This interaction is thought to be the reason why CBD has such widespread therapeutic benefits.\n\n### What to Look for in a Product\n\nWhen selecting a CBD product for purchase, you need to look at several different factors and be a skeptical consumer. CBD is unregulated almost everywhere in the world, so your first concern should be your safety. When considering a purchase, find out whether the product has been lab tested. A reputable brand or retailer should be able to point you to evidence of lab testing, which indicates whether pesticides or other toxic chemicals are present. If you are unable to see that a product has been lab tested, you should walk away quickly. The hemp plant, where CBD on the market comes from, is a [bio-accumulator](https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/can-hemp-clean-up-the-earth-629589/), which means it soaks in the composition from the ground it's planted within, including any toxins from within the soil.\n\nAnother factor to consider is whether the amount of CBD listed is what is present within the product. A recent study posted on [Leafly](https://www.leafly.com/news/strains-products/cbd-oil-test-results?mc_cid=e33ecaa7bc&mc_eid=4b5505706f)\nshowed that out of 47 CBD products tested, only half contained within 20% of the advertised amount of CBD. Five of the 47 products contained no CBD at all. \n\nBesides the safety issues, if you're looking to gain therapeutic benefit from CBD, you need to assess what you're trying to achieve. If you have a skin condition, such as eczema, a good place to start is a topical, such as a lotion or a soap. If you have an autoimmune condition, such as Chron's disease, a tincture may be more appropriate. There are many different methods of consumption, so you need to think about how each may affect you and what works best for your lifestyle.\n\n### Throwing Money Out the Window\n\nIf CBD is beneficial due to its interaction with our endocannabinoid system, or ECS, then you need to think of how CBD works within the body. To have any positive benefit, CBD needs to be binding to your CB2 receptors which reside within the body's organs and tissue. So, if you're looking at a CBD infused mascara, you're wasting your money. CBD infused shampoo, pretty much the same. CBD candles, clothing, nail polish, and so on, you as the buyer need to beware.\n\n\nPhoto credit: [Pete Moore](https://www.flickr.com/photos/181956921@N04/48118206383/in/photolist-2gj3okZ-APRhFh-Nv8Kww-2h8RcNj-2hjyLa7-vDSiRR-V3w6oH-NePhYo-Ng5ijX-2hP9jxi-NePF9A-2gdZdoE-23sJtEj-NVWFaQ-PgKoy7-29a2fQn-2hhZ7wD-2d3suFe-xfwvn6-2hKkV3Z-2hKkV7B-JrnNR5-25YPQjE-Thkcct-WfmVLY-2g8qNSg-Q6vvFd-2hGnnwm-27SNiFt-S4Zorx-YuvVBq-QkhARj-2hKpEvU-VKonKP-SaBypG-2gtYiXB-2hKkV6e-2hKkV4A-2hiwkAr-JtU5Ah-VXVTf1-RM939L-29BPE4P-HH9S14-2ayL42k-HVgbjw-GVWDA6-NcHZgA-2gk9pb7-2erBy5C/)/Flickr","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.4388489208633093,"src":"/static/d9dd95b0a5f1eec834840b22f5c95e2c/14b42/907425a0067e71ae20480f0b8fceed90.jpg","srcSet":"/static/d9dd95b0a5f1eec834840b22f5c95e2c/f836f/907425a0067e71ae20480f0b8fceed90.jpg 200w,\n/static/d9dd95b0a5f1eec834840b22f5c95e2c/2244e/907425a0067e71ae20480f0b8fceed90.jpg 400w,\n/static/d9dd95b0a5f1eec834840b22f5c95e2c/14b42/907425a0067e71ae20480f0b8fceed90.jpg 800w,\n/static/d9dd95b0a5f1eec834840b22f5c95e2c/47498/907425a0067e71ae20480f0b8fceed90.jpg 1200w,\n/static/d9dd95b0a5f1eec834840b22f5c95e2c/19493/907425a0067e71ae20480f0b8fceed90.jpg 1592w","srcWebp":"/static/d9dd95b0a5f1eec834840b22f5c95e2c/58556/907425a0067e71ae20480f0b8fceed90.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/d9dd95b0a5f1eec834840b22f5c95e2c/61e93/907425a0067e71ae20480f0b8fceed90.webp 200w,\n/static/d9dd95b0a5f1eec834840b22f5c95e2c/1f5c5/907425a0067e71ae20480f0b8fceed90.webp 400w,\n/static/d9dd95b0a5f1eec834840b22f5c95e2c/58556/907425a0067e71ae20480f0b8fceed90.webp 800w,\n/static/d9dd95b0a5f1eec834840b22f5c95e2c/99238/907425a0067e71ae20480f0b8fceed90.webp 1200w,\n/static/d9dd95b0a5f1eec834840b22f5c95e2c/af18f/907425a0067e71ae20480f0b8fceed90.webp 1592w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2119-markdown","title":"Whole Plant Medicine & the Entourage Effect","slug":"whole-plant-medicine-and-the-entourage-effect","content":"Alicia Rose is the Founder of [HerbaBuena](http://herbabuena.com/) a California based collective that  provides a sophisticated, personalized approach as well as the finest cannabis-based medicine. HerbaBuena is well known for their social events which allow its members to gather and learn about the therapeutic benefits of cannabis and the products that suit them best. This week, Alicia discusses the philosophy behind creating products with the whole plant and why the entourage effect is important.\r\n\r\n**The Entourage Effect - Why It Matters**\r\n\r\nCannabis contains more than 400 compounds, 80 of which are currently categorized as cannabinoids, and all of which act synergistically together to create an “entourage effect” – or an effect that when used together magnifies the therapeutic benefits of the individual components. Better said, the medicinal impact of the whole plant is greater than the sum of its parts. The innate plant intelligence of cannabis as a healing herb is unparalleled, likely due to the sheer number of compounds working together to create a therapeutic effect.\r\n \r\nHerbaBuena Elixirs for example, are crafted to maintain whole plant intelligence, through solution-specific, synergistic herbal blends as functional medicine. And our cultivation projects focus on strains with balanced cannabinoid profiles – such as Cannatonic Rich CBD.\r\n\r\n**Whole Cannabis Flower vs. Hemp**\r\n\r\nStudies have shown that 100 milligrams of single-molecule CBD is not equivalent to 100 milligrams of a CBD-rich whole plant cannabis extract. As part of our own anecdotal evidence, we’ve seen that not all CBD is created equal, and that the compound derived from industrial hemp doesn’t have the same efficacy for patients as whole flower cannabis sativa extract. This is why all our CBD products are flower based.\r\n \r\n**Primary Cannabinoids**\r\n\r\nStudies show that the combined effect of these compounds working together is greater than that if they’re used alone. In light of this, our hope is to continue working with geneticists and chemists to develop cannabinoid-specific plants – to offer a more consistent and targeted effect, without compromising the benefit of the entourage effect of the whole plant spectrum. Here’s a list of the primary cannabinoids found in modern day cannabis.\r\n \r\n**THC:** One of the only psychoactive compounds, it offers a euphoric effect that can get us out of our bodies and into our mind, whereby the greatest healing can occur. It has also been shown to relieve pain, reduce vomiting and nausea, suppress muscle spasms, stimulate appetite, and is known to be the pre-cursor to the bioavailability of CBD.\r\n \r\n**THCA:** The raw, pre-heated (pre-decarboxylated) form of THC has been shown to reduce inflammation, inhibit cancer cell and tumor growth, suppress muscle spasms, and potentially to balance the ESC without the psychoactive effect. Found in things like kief and raw juice.\r\n \r\n**CBD:** Has been shown to relieve pain, reduces inflammation, slow bacterial growth, reduce blood sugar levels, reduce seizures and convulsions, reduce risk of artery blockage, inhibit growth of cancer cells and tumors, treat psoriasis, moderates psychosis, suppress muscle spasms, relieve anxiety, promote bone growth, modulate immune system function, reduce small intestine contractions, and protect against nervous system degeneration. It is also an antidote to the effects of THC.\r\n \r\n**CBN:** Has been shown to relieve pain, provide a sedative effect for sleep and suppress muscle spasms\r\n \r\n**CBG:** Has been shown to slow bacterial growth, reduce inflammation, inhibit cancer cell and tumor growth.\r\n \r\n**THCv:** Has been shown to suppress appetite, help with weight loss, reduce seizures and convulsions and promote bone growth. We’re working on cultivating stable strains of flowers from which we can extract this powerful compound.\r\n\r\nIf you are interested in attending one of [HerbaBuena's](http://herbabuena.com/) social events, take a look at their [online social calendar](http://herbabuena.com/the-social-club/).\r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. The flavors and\nsmells are produced by terpenes, which are small molecules with\nrepeating units of the organic compound isoprene. Terpenes are\nmanufactured inside specialized hairs, called trichomes, located on the\nsurface of the leaves and stems of the plant, and they account for 5-10\npercent of the total essential oils produced by trichomes; in fact,\nterpenes are found in all plants to varying degrees.\n\nMore than 100 different terpenes have been identified in marijuana, and\nthese terpene profiles can vary from strain to strain. Terpene profiling\n-- the process of determining the types and quantities of terpenes\npresent in a plant -- is thought to be one of the most accurate ways to\ndistinguish between marijuana strains. Various factors influence the\nratio of terpenes present in marijuana, including strain, environment,\ncultivation and degree of plant degradation.\n\n**The Role of Terpenes**\n\nTerpenes are functionally diverse, and many are integral to marijuana's\ngrowth and survival. They attract pollinators, repel harmful insects,\ndeter herbivores, protect against bacteria and fungi, and act as\nprecursors for more complex molecules, such as cannabinoids. Many\nterpenes interact with other types of terpenes, and some assist or\ninhibit the formation of different compounds within the marijuana plant.\n\n**Primary Terpenes**\n\nTerpenes can be classified as primary or secondary, depending on their\nrole: Primary terpenes are essential for plant growth and development,\nwhile secondary terpenes are involved in plant defenses. Following are\nsome of the primary terpenes found in marijuana:\n\n-   **Pinene** gives marijuana its earthy, pine-like flavor and spicy,\n    herbal notes. This terpene crosses the blood-brain barrier and\n    promotes memory retention and alertness by inhibiting the breakdown\n    of acetylcholinesterase, which is a chemical found in the brain. It\n    also acts as both a bronchodilator and an anti-inflammatory.\n-   **Caryophyllene** has a peppery flavor and a spicy, earthy aroma\n    with citrus notes. It is the only terpene known to act on the\n    [endocannabinoid\n    system](https://hellomd.com/articles/is-your-endocannabinoid-system-in-balance),\n    which regulates a variety of physiological processes, including\n    [pain\n    sensation](https://hellomd.com/articles/marijuana-nips-pain-in-the-bud)\n    and\n    [inflammation](https://hellomd.com/articles/medical-marijuana-as-an-aid-against-inflammation).\n    Activation of the CB2 receptors by caryophyllene is instrumental in\n    enhancing marijuana's anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.\n-   **Humulene** gives marijuana its robust, woody flavor and spicy,\n    herbal notes. This terpene possesses [anti-inflammatory\n    properties](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-powerful-anti-inflammatory-effects-of-cannabis)\n    and acts as an [appetite\n    suppressant](https://hellomd.com/articles/the-munchies-will-make-you-fat-right-think-again).\n-   **Linalool** has a floral flavor reminiscent of lavender, with the\n    addition of spicy overtones. It exhibits powerful analgesic and\n    [anti-seizure](https://hellomd.com/articles/epilepsy-relief-possible-through-medical-cannabis)\n    properties and is partly responsible for the sedative effects of\n    certain marijuana strains. It also has strong antibacterial,\n    anti-cancer and antifungal effects.\n-   **Myrcene** is the most common terpene found in marijuana, and it is\n    also present in bay, thyme, hops and lemongrass. This musky terpene\n    is a potent analgesic, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory, and its\n    concentration determines whether a strain has an energizing or\n    sedative effect. Strains containing more than 0.5 percent of myrcene\n    have a\n    [sedative](https://hellomd.com/articles/medical-marijuana-could-help-insomniacs-sleep-better)\n    effect, while strains containing less than 0.5 percent myrcene\n    produce an\n    [energizing](https://hellomd.com/articles/relief-from-fibromyalgia-symptoms-the-case-for-medical-marijuana) effect.\n-   **Terpinolene** has a woody flavor and is responsible for many of\n    the floral notes characteristic of Jack Herer varieties\n    of marijuana. It has been shown to exhibit\n    [antioxidant](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/are-hemp-seeds-a-superfood),\n    [anti-cancer](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/marijuana-found-to-shrink-aggressive-brain-cancer)\n    and\n    [sedative](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/no-longer-sleepless-in-seattle-medical-marijuana-eases-insomnia) properties.\n-   **Limonene** is most often found in sativa strains of marijuana and\n    has a citrus flavor reminiscent of oranges. It has antioxidant,\n    anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, and it is known to\n    activate enzymes that stimulate the liver and increase bile flow,\n    which in turn aids digestion. Studies show that limonene can also\n    help treat\n    [anxiety](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/does-marijuana-ease-anxiety)\n    and\n    [depression](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/depression-sufferers-find-relief-in-medical-marijuana).\n\n**Secondary Terpenes**\n\nFollowing are some of the secondary terpenes found in marijuana:\n\n-   **Sabinene** has a woody flavor with spicy, peppery notes. It has\n    been shown to aid digestion, relieve\n    [arthritis](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-soothes-arthritis-pain)\n    and soothe skin conditions.\n-   **Phellandrene** is known for its peppermint flavor, with slight\n    citrus notes. It possesses\n    [antidepressant](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/depression-sufferers-find-relief-in-medical-marijuana).\n-   **Borneol** has a minty aroma and is found in high concentrations in\n    herbs such as rosemary and mint. It has both anti-inflammatory and\n    [analgesic](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-thc-and-cbd-work-to-fight-pain) effects.\n-   **Isoborneol** has a sweet and musty flavor; also found in mugwort,\n    isoborneol exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial\n    properties, and it inhibits the herpes simplex type 1 virus, which\n    causes cold sores.\n-   **Phytol** results from the breakdown of a green pigment\n    called chlorophyll. [Research](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3165946/)\nconducted by Ethan Russo, MD and published in the British Journal of\nPharmacology in August 2011, reveals that terpenes mediate the\nphysiological and psychoactive effects of cannabinoids: a phenomenon\ntermed the [entourage\neffect](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-entourage-effect).\nThis may help to explain why the effects of synthetic cannabinoids --\nchemicals made to mimic the effects of naturally occurring cannabinoids\n-- differ from those of smoking or ingesting the whole marijuana plant\nand why different strains of the marijuana plant differ in their\neffects.\n\nThe primary and secondary terpenes in marijuana exhibit a variety of\naromas, flavors and medicinal benefits. Understanding the differences\nbetween the different types of terpenes make choosing a suitable strain\nof marijuana easier.\n\n[Photo Credit](https://www.flickr.com/photos/mindwhisperings/3202191448/in/photolist-5SY4Xo-8n6c7h-9kh3bS-p5UBJC-9iSR3f-oxTr4v-9rHh47-aaQcLJ-9rEiVB-9rEiTF-dQTKqM-4X5eAv-9rEiWz-6dnEaq-iCzjGK-fTq6wD-9rHh9W-7mSznR-4oThFo-5C16rF-P15Sc-kVXmSg-4TkU8v-8s8NiE-7C2C2K-hmjD7N-9L5jVV-HUhxF-as8xvv-6nphvT-62YzRN-6F6z28-2tiLf-dezxSJ-fch9VE-5J3N14-3ZHPK-3ZHQq-oxqQQR-pQgnHR-5ugN1D-rAiAvY-63oMZY-3ZHN5-nVfH1y-dawLt2-qqpVLu-abv6JW-qYY4AW-3ZHP2)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.4705882352941178,"src":"/static/9a4c5759398c1f0cf4d4bb602e683e40/ee604/33dc664e08b8641da97f6dca48afaa9a.png","srcSet":"/static/9a4c5759398c1f0cf4d4bb602e683e40/69585/33dc664e08b8641da97f6dca48afaa9a.png 200w,\n/static/9a4c5759398c1f0cf4d4bb602e683e40/497c6/33dc664e08b8641da97f6dca48afaa9a.png 400w,\n/static/9a4c5759398c1f0cf4d4bb602e683e40/ee604/33dc664e08b8641da97f6dca48afaa9a.png 800w,\n/static/9a4c5759398c1f0cf4d4bb602e683e40/a4253/33dc664e08b8641da97f6dca48afaa9a.png 969w","srcWebp":"/static/9a4c5759398c1f0cf4d4bb602e683e40/58556/33dc664e08b8641da97f6dca48afaa9a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/9a4c5759398c1f0cf4d4bb602e683e40/61e93/33dc664e08b8641da97f6dca48afaa9a.webp 200w,\n/static/9a4c5759398c1f0cf4d4bb602e683e40/1f5c5/33dc664e08b8641da97f6dca48afaa9a.webp 400w,\n/static/9a4c5759398c1f0cf4d4bb602e683e40/58556/33dc664e08b8641da97f6dca48afaa9a.webp 800w,\n/static/9a4c5759398c1f0cf4d4bb602e683e40/c7cd9/33dc664e08b8641da97f6dca48afaa9a.webp 969w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2025-markdown","title":"What is the Entourage Effect?","slug":"what-is-the-entourage-effect","content":"While medical researchers have identified more than [480 components in\r\ncannabis](http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/11/health/gupta-marijuana-entourage/),\r\nincluding 66 compounds unique to the plant, scientists have yet to\r\ndetermine exactly how these chemical components work together to produce\r\ndifferent reactions. One concept, termed the \"entourage effect,\"\r\ntheorizes that some cannabis compounds, which have no effect in\r\nisolation, affect the human body only when combined with other\r\ncomponents.\r\n\r\n**Synergy vs. the Entourage Effect**\r\n\r\nBefore the entourage effect gained prominence in medical circles, many\r\nresearchers discussed [the effect of\r\nsynergy](http://www.totalhealthmagazine.com/Herbal-Medicine/Beyond-Synergy%E2%80%94the-Entourage-Effect-in-Nutrition-Herbalism.html)\r\nin herbal medicines and dietary supplements. For components within an\r\nherbal medicine to achieve synergy, the effects of two or more\r\ncomponents must become magnified when combined. Synergisms also explain\r\nwhy vitamins in isolation are less beneficial than eating fruits and\r\nvegetables that contain a wide variety of vitamins and antioxidants.\r\n\r\nThe entourage effect is a related, but different, concept. For the\r\nentourage effect to occur, isolated components must have no noticeable\r\nbenefit in curing the condition under examination. However, when\r\ncombined with other components that also have no discernible benefit,\r\nthere must be a palpable advantage to using the composite.\r\n\r\nResearchers believe that the entourage effect explains why cannabis can\r\nbe so effective when treating certain conditions while synthetic\r\nformulations of only THC or CBD medications may only achieve limited\r\nsuccess in some patients. Evidence suggests that although certain\r\ncannabinoids may appear to be inert, they may produce tangible benefits\r\nwhen mixed with other compounds.\r\n\r\n**How the Entourage Effect Impacts Medication Formulation**\r\n\r\nWhen patients reported that cannabis consumption eased the weight loss\r\ncaused by AIDS or the adverse affects of chemotherapy, medical\r\nresearchers analyzed the plant to determine what caused these benefits.\r\nResearch credited the cannabinoid THC for these benefits, so\r\npharmaceutical companies isolated the THC to create drugs to address\r\nAIDs and chemotherapy symptoms. However, patients who used these\r\n[THC-only\r\ndrugs](http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/2015/01/medicinal-cannabis)\r\nreported greater psychotropic side effects when compared to ingesting\r\ncannabis.\r\n\r\nFurther research into cannabis uncovered that the cannabinoid CBD,\r\nblended with other cannabinoids, reduced the hallucinatory effects of\r\nTHC. Therefore, THC-only drugs eliminated the benefit of the rest of the\r\ncannabinoids. The Israeli chemist Raphael Mechoulam named this observed\r\nphenomenon the entourage effect.\r\n\r\nPharmaceutical companies used the concept of the entourage effect to\r\nreformulate their THC-only medications to include an equal measurement\r\nof CBD. The resulting formulations achieved a greater therapeutic\r\nbenefit while reducing the adverse reactions of THC-only medications.\r\n\r\nThe entourage effect also impacts the work of scientists who want to\r\n[breed certain strains of\r\ncannabis](http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v525/n7570_supp/full/525S6a.html)\r\nto treat specific health problems. Breeding these cannabis strains to\r\nincrease specific cannabinoids that may treat common ailments may result\r\nin new plants that can better treat patients with fewer side effects.\r\nHowever, such new strains also may create an imbalance within the\r\ndifferent cannabis compounds that eliminate known benefits.\r\n\r\n**Whole Plant Medicinal Use: Barriers and Origins**\r\n\r\nFor people who have observed or experienced the entourage effect in\r\ncannabis, it may be difficult to understand why some doctors hesitate to\r\nrecommend botanical cannabis use and prefer medications with only THC or\r\nCBD cannabinoids. Many medical professionals prefer to prescribe a\r\nsingle compound used to treat a specific problem, disease or ailment\r\nbecause Western medical philosophy endorses this type of\r\nisolated-treatment medicine. While this approach may unintentionally\r\neliminate the entourage effect of cannabis, doctors support this\r\nphilosophy because it also serves to minimize adverse side effects.\r\n\r\nHowever, to effectively use botanical cannabis, some researchers argue\r\nthat doctors should reject the idea of creating a single potent drug to\r\ntreat an isolated problem. Instead, these researchers believe that\r\ndoctors should return to a philosophy of treating multiple possible\r\nproblems with a low dosage of a single, wide-range medication. These\r\nscientists, including noted cannabis researcher Vincenzo Di Marzo, also\r\nbelieve that [some cancers and other diseases may come from an imbalance\r\nof some natural\r\nsystems](http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/2015/01/medicinal-cannabis)\r\nwithin the human body.\r\n\r\nThis concept of poly-pharmacology remains in practice in traditional\r\nChinese medicine. Instead of using a single herb to treat a specific\r\nproblem, practitioners prescribe a combination of herbs called herbal\r\nformulas. The combinations of these herbs, some of which may have no\r\ndiscernible benefit on their own, are well-known to have many benefits\r\nfrom numerous past studies. Experts carefully combine the herbs to\r\ncreate the necessary treatment for a combination of related health\r\nproblems.\r\n\r\n**Known Instances of the Entourage Effect in Cannabis**\r\n\r\nWhile the effect of CBD on THC is the most notable illustration of the\r\nentourage effect, research also indicates that [cannabinoids and\r\nterpenes may also\r\ncombine](http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1476-5381.2011.01238.x/pdf)\r\nto achieve greater therapeutic advantages. Studies indicate that certain\r\nterpenes may impact the blood-brain barrier, which may explain why\r\ncertain cannabinoids have greater efficacy when they do not operate in\r\nisolation.\r\n\r\nIn the whole-plant cannabis versus synthetic-cannabis medication debate,\r\nall researchers agree that the entourage effect is still not a concept\r\nthat they fully understand. Further research into exactly how THC, CBD\r\nand other important cannabis compounds work will allow scientists to\r\nmake better recommendations for how to use cannabis compounds to treat\r\nvarious diseases and ailments. With nearly 500 different cannabis\r\ncomponents to explore, the field of whole-plant and\r\nsynthetic-cannabinoid medications is wide open for new and exciting\r\ndevelopments.\r\n\r\n[Photo Credit](https://www.flickr.com/photos/wheatfields/2074121298/in/photolist-4ahq13-9cgKf-79zW3r-d4VuPJ-AtFDzK-pqhzaG-998tw4-4LhphD-ixJ3oL-5uLDAd-X8tR1-4adqtr-4ads8H-8swLhf-X47Pc-95LerV-6axMb-8sLuuq-8VBLCx-9Ge2nu-fuRSHd-4mKc6X-zj9M1S-4NvAzX-8VUnfd-7Z7dwD-7STQ1K-jHXBe-9Atkcr-5KVEaV-5EyWGV-79zXev-q7W8Qp-586np6-4aZTX7-qdfpkk-ooKL5j-9jpQKH-5uGh1x-RAuCj-63aMz3-586mZz-586mP2-rcmPQL-oH1n1i-r3uTa3-mL5Enn-7ZejvR-Agbbn9-AgaUTT)\r\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5267175572519085,"src":"/static/30a869a99ff2da1f7d4d8dbaa4798fd0/ee604/d1766b6511dc373bc43c72bbf2b842a5.png","srcSet":"/static/30a869a99ff2da1f7d4d8dbaa4798fd0/69585/d1766b6511dc373bc43c72bbf2b842a5.png 200w,\n/static/30a869a99ff2da1f7d4d8dbaa4798fd0/497c6/d1766b6511dc373bc43c72bbf2b842a5.png 400w,\n/static/30a869a99ff2da1f7d4d8dbaa4798fd0/ee604/d1766b6511dc373bc43c72bbf2b842a5.png 800w,\n/static/30a869a99ff2da1f7d4d8dbaa4798fd0/30c15/d1766b6511dc373bc43c72bbf2b842a5.png 936w","srcWebp":"/static/30a869a99ff2da1f7d4d8dbaa4798fd0/58556/d1766b6511dc373bc43c72bbf2b842a5.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/30a869a99ff2da1f7d4d8dbaa4798fd0/61e93/d1766b6511dc373bc43c72bbf2b842a5.webp 200w,\n/static/30a869a99ff2da1f7d4d8dbaa4798fd0/1f5c5/d1766b6511dc373bc43c72bbf2b842a5.webp 400w,\n/static/30a869a99ff2da1f7d4d8dbaa4798fd0/58556/d1766b6511dc373bc43c72bbf2b842a5.webp 800w,\n/static/30a869a99ff2da1f7d4d8dbaa4798fd0/5d27d/d1766b6511dc373bc43c72bbf2b842a5.webp 936w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2013-markdown","title":"The CBN Cannabinoid: Affects Your Health","slug":"the-cbn-cannabinoid-affects-your-health","content":"Doctors and patients alike are becoming familiar with the benefits\noffered for a variety of ailments through compounds contained in medical\nmarijuana like CBD (cannabidiol) or, to a different degree, THC\n(tetrahydrocannabinol). Cannabis contains far more compounds than just\nthese two best-known compounds, however. One of the lesser-known\ncompounds, CBN (cannabinol), is being studied closely because of its\npossible therapeutic value to patients.\n\n**CBD, THC and CBN**\n\nCBD has been found useful in pain management, as a drug that could\npossibly [combat cancer](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22506672)\nand for its general anti-inflammatory properties. CBD achieves this\nthrough its impact on certain receptors in the brain.\n[THC](https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/marijuana.html), the\nbest-known property of cannabis, can enable pain relief, help with\nnausea and diminish anxiety due to its psychotropic properties. CBN is\nthe third compound in medical marijuana that can help with [pain\nrelief](http://www.jneurosci.org/content/22/11/4720.full). In addition,\nCBN has been studied for its ability to [treat\ninsomnia](http://steephilllab.com/cbn-a-sleeping-synergy/) and\n[stimulate appetite](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22543671).\n\n**How CBN Activates**\n\nUnlike CBD, which occurs separately from THC within cannabis, CBN\n[distills](http://steephilllab.com/cbn-a-sleeping-synergy/) from THC.\nSpecifically, Steep Hill Lab describes the CBD-to-THC process as being\none of oxidization after THC degrades. During this process, THC loses\nits psychoactive properties, but retains the ability to be an\nanti-inflammatory while also enhancing feelings of relaxation.\n\n**Enhanced Impact of CBN on Patients**\n\nStudies have shown that CBN enhances the impact of THC and CBD in\ncertain types of therapies. All three compounds--THC, CBD and CBN--have\nbeen found to have antibacterial qualities, particularly against viruses\nsuch as [MRSA](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18681481). In\naddition, studies have shown positive results in the impact of CBN on\n[lung carcinomas](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1159836) in\nanimals. That could mean that patients may someday experience similar\npositive benefits from CBN as well.\n\n**Getting the Best of Cannabis**\n\nLike many mainstream medications, different medical marijuana patients\nget different results from the various compounds that comprise cannabis.\nOne benefit to CBN is, as the National Institute of Health terms it,\n[the taming of\nTHC](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3165946/). Some\npatients may need and seek the more psychotropic properties offered by\nTHC. For other patients, however, those very properties outweigh the\npotential benefits they may experience. And that's where CBN can make a\ndifference. As THC oxidizes into CBN, psychotropic properties are\ntamed--thinned out, basically--and that enables patients to achieve the\nanti-inflammatory, pain relief or other symptomatic improvements they\nneed.\n\n**Hope for the Future**\n\nThe list of ailments that medical marijuana may be able to treat or help\nprovide relief from grows on a near-daily basis: help for cancer\npatients, controlling\nepilepsy,\nminimizing the pain of\n[fibromyalgia](https://www.hellomd.com/learn/fibromyalgia)\nand\n[migraines](https://www.hellomd.com/learn/migraines)\nare a few medical issues on that list. More research dollars are\nbeginning to flow to determine the other properties of cannabis that may\nprove medically beneficial. Additionally, more formulations of medical\nmarijuana are being developed in different strains to help increasingly\ndifferent issues.\n\nCBN is the latest discovery that has proven to be of great benefit to\npatients, and it won't be the last. As research ferrets out more ways in\nwhich CBN and other compounds can be used--such as the anti-tumor\nproperties already observed in lab animals--practitioners can begin\nrecommend cannabis to broader groups of patients. Medical marijuana is\nalready legal in 23 states as well as the District of Columbia, and its\nreach grows with each election cycle as well. With the combination of\nenhanced research, enhanced prescribing and enhanced availability,\npatients will benefit exponentially.\n\n[Photo Credit](https://www.flickr.com/photos/noaa_glerl/6329688296/in/photolist-aDkiNQ-tCkcU-x1m84-oUChc-5x1Trn-eex4Fn-rxei46-rt3L2H-iG3ViD-UQ1W-GB86X-aPUr2a-bv75No-asMweG-6gBj3T-QZ7Kg-bk4yHS-dPdydB-6AV8nA-63DZSF-iG5Lmf-8FegjL-6AQWT4-9QM3mp-orYs3-orYs5-9U2ZkW-cBwrEu-9FTGM9-r9QMhM-qfb9Ls-aeh1t9-rkFrGp-aeh1J5-92SgXr-4NjUJ-eqfihP-8cGETw-rnUFk7-woA9Mh-dGcWib-o66YH-cBwruS-27ywx-bpYfH6-61U8f2-4ZpJrh-2ViCx-aeh2fU-ezuEza)\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.408450704225352,"src":"/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/ee604/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.png","srcSet":"/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/69585/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.png 200w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/497c6/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.png 400w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/ee604/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.png 800w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/f3583/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.png 1200w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/6af1e/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.png 1424w","srcWebp":"/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/58556/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/61e93/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.webp 200w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/1f5c5/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.webp 400w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/58556/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.webp 800w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/99238/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.webp 1200w,\n/static/f0938514a6eb3023d048f1759e0bdf7b/ed80f/e1aa58d3a4245cd37ccbdc3ea7ce325a.webp 1424w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2017-markdown","title":"Marijuana, Cannabinoids and Homeostasis: A Balancing Act","slug":"marijuana-cannabinoids-and-homeostasis-a-balancing-act","content":"Like a tightrope walker, the human body seeks balance. Your body\nhas developed a highly honed ability to achieve an internal state of\nequilibrium, referred to as homeostasis. This system of checks and\nbalances to keep you functioning on an even keel is influenced by the\nendocannabinoid system. Both internal (endogenous) and external\ncannabinoids (those found in marijuana) affect the cannabinoid system,\nwhich means they have a role in this balancing act.\n\n**Homeostatic Acts**\n\nDeep within the brain just above the brain stem is a cluster of nerve\ncells called the\n[hypothalamus](http://www.healthline.com/human-body-maps/hypothalamus).\nThis structure is involved in the endocrine (hormone) system and helps\nregulate key processes such as:\n\n-   Body temperature\n-   Appetite\n-   Thirst\n-   Heart rate\n-   Blood pressure\n-   Sleep cycles\n\nAll of these processes are essential to maintaining homeostasis, both of\nthe body as a whole and of specific systems such as the circulatory or\nrespiratory system. The hypothalamus acts as a central command post,\nrecognizing changes in the environment and releasing hormones and\nneurotransmitters, chemicals that allow communication between the\nvarious cells and structures of the body, to counteract the change or\ninitiate a reaction. Here's an example: Your body prefers an even 98.6\ndegrees Fahrenheit. This is the ideal temperature for organ and system\nfunctioning. When you exercise, your body temperature goes up. To combat\nthe exercise-induced temperature spike, your hypothalamus stimulates the\nmillions of\n[eccrine](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6773238/)\nor sweat glands in the skin. The resulting sweat helps cool the body,\npreventing your core temperature from getting too high. Other\nhomeostatic responses to exercise include flushing, which is the result\nof dilated blood vessels that also help reduce body temperature, and\nincreased breathing and heart rate to keep oxygen levels at optimum\nlevels. All these responses are intended to return the body to balance.\n\n**Endocannabinoid System and Homeostasis**\n\nThe [endocannabinoid\nsystem](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj9oa7F6dbKAhUGwiYKHbqDCWYQFggsMAI&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.beyondthc.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2012%2F07%2FeCBSystemLee.pdf&usg=AFQjCNEIJus1VNAylo0XhdEg7s2F8SJ-lw&sig2)\nconsists of cannabinoid receptors located throughout the central and\nperipheral nervous system and immune system. These receptors bind to\nboth endocannabinoids and external cannabinoids, such as\nΔ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).\n\nThe hypothalamus contains cannabinoid receptors, and\n[research](http://benthamscience.com/journals/endocrine-metabolic-and-immune-disorders-drug-targets/volume/8/issue/3/page/220/)\nshows that the endocannabinoids that bind to these receptors help\nregulate homeostasis. Disruptions in this process, through illness,\ninjury or medication, can affect homeostasis.\n\n**Homeostatic Disease**\n\nMost homeostatic responses are nonconscious acts; you are not aware of\nthem; they just occur. Think about your car's engine. When the engine is\nworking, and you get to your destination without mishap, you probably\ndon't think about the oil in the car. But without that oil, or if the\noil is old and contaminated, the engine grinds, systems fail, and your\ntrip is halted. Similarly, when the homeostatic process in your body is\ninterrupted due to illness, medication or injury, balance is prevented.\n\nThere are a number of [diseases and\nconditions](https://med.libretexts.org/Bookshelves/Anatomy_and_Physiology/Book%3A_Anatomy_and_Physiology_(Boundless)/1%3A_Introduction_to_Anatomy_and_Physiology/1.3%3A_Homeostasis/1.3B%3A_Disease_as_Homeostatic_Imbalance#:~:text=Diseases%20that%20result%20from%20a,have%20become%20resistant%20to%20insulin.)\ncaused by homeostasis imbalance, including:\n\n-   Diabetes and hypo- and hyperglycemia\n-   Obesity\n-   High blood pressure\n-   Arthritis\n-   Dehydration\n-   Gout\n-   Osteoporosis\n-   Thyroid disorders, such as goiter\n-   Endocrine disorders\n\nIn diabetes, for instance, the balance between blood glucose levels and\ninsulin production is off. Medical intervention is needed in the form of\ninsulin pills or injections to restore balance and prevent organ damage\nand death.\n\nAge is another factor that affects homeostasis. Let's face it; things\ndon't always work as well as we get older, including on the cellular\nlevel.\nAccording to [Dr. Robert\nMelamede](http://www.unitedpatientsgroup.com/blog/2014/11/11/what-is-homeostasis-and-how-can-cannabis-help/),\nretired chairman of the Biology Department at the University of\nColorado, Colorado Springs, \"cannabinoid deficiency has been implicated\nin a number of age-related illnesses.\"\n\nSome age-related illnesses are also homeostatic in origin, such as\nosteoporosis and arthritis. Other conditions may result in homeostatic\nsymptoms because they disrupt the normal cannabinoid cycle. In patients\nwith chronic pain, for example, heart rate, blood pressure and\ndepression are elevated and sleep is disturbed. These\n[symptoms](https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/magazine/issues/spring11/articles/spring11pg5-6.html)\nare the result of overreaction of the cannabinoid system in response to\nthe constant pain stimulus. The cycle of stimulation and cannabinoid\ntrigger does not stop, and balance cannot be achieved.\n\n**Cannabis for Restoring Balance**\n\nCannabinoids from cannabis have the ability to bind to cannabinoid\nreceptors and restore balance. Let's look at the patients with chronic\npain. THC is not only an\n[analgesic](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2430692/), it\nalso blocks the pain from stimulating the cannabinoid receptors that are\ntriggering the increased heart rate, blood pressure, mood effects and\nsleep deprivation.\n\nCannabis has been shown to offer health benefits in treating a number of\nconditions associated with homeostatic imbalance, including:\n\n-  Arthritis\n-   Lupus\n-   Depression\n-   Fibromyalgia\n-   Appetite disorders\n-   Diabetes\n-   Crohn's\n    Disease\n\nResearchers are also looking at the effects of cannabis on\n[schizophrenia](https://domnitamaria.ro/upload/docs_listing/Cannabinoids%20in%20Neurologic%20and%20Mental%20Disease%20[2015][UnitedVRG].pdf#)\nand [obesity](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12052044).\nSchizophrenia is a severe mental disorder that may be due to an\nunbalanced dopamine cycle in the brain. Obesity is a metabolic disease\nin which food intake surpasses energy needs, and it has reached epidemic\nproportions, affecting more than\n[one-third](http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/adult.html) of all adults in\nthe United States. Again, due to an absence of homeostasis.\n\nAristotle once said that \"nature abhors a vacuum.\" Nature also abhors\nimbalance, and like the tightrope walker, we need to be able to restore\nbalance for ultimate functioning and performance. Using cannabis may\nhelp us walk that health tightrope.\n\n[Photo Credit](https://www.flickr.com/photos/nathaninsandiego/7452309120/in/photolist-cmx2Sh-bgejxn-cmx46w-ayZfDd-rxJ8Vg-eS8LBw-2yt3AY-2EXJM-9vjbXU-rS1DCP-8g9Kt-pBR5tz-pxsRDA-ywmaio-yPJEhv-76jCRP-61J6di-cmx5iY-o2Kh1Q-8zbzLN-7RrS1t-bhYXPv-7BNtcb-6mfw7S-4r8Qy8-pxtBg4-dQ3vrW-8eK9cc-bAmTjy-yoUz1L-9rqHj-pMPfgJ-pPZ4Nd-ceZih5-JQnRf-pPF3AP-pPUL9r-aJcQBr-cEMKxq-uM6QC-eUoCgk-c8xRud-49CaBd-6QHb7t-pxvwcL-e69A5W-CtHPqw-2BVqb3-66TZw7-AhQic)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.4184397163120568,"src":"/static/25712c985d226c3082aa727d074a32e9/ee604/861b909e12ad23825e54c01305bf2d55.png","srcSet":"/static/25712c985d226c3082aa727d074a32e9/69585/861b909e12ad23825e54c01305bf2d55.png 200w,\n/static/25712c985d226c3082aa727d074a32e9/497c6/861b909e12ad23825e54c01305bf2d55.png 400w,\n/static/25712c985d226c3082aa727d074a32e9/ee604/861b909e12ad23825e54c01305bf2d55.png 800w,\n/static/25712c985d226c3082aa727d074a32e9/93f09/861b909e12ad23825e54c01305bf2d55.png 1147w","srcWebp":"/static/25712c985d226c3082aa727d074a32e9/58556/861b909e12ad23825e54c01305bf2d55.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/25712c985d226c3082aa727d074a32e9/61e93/861b909e12ad23825e54c01305bf2d55.webp 200w,\n/static/25712c985d226c3082aa727d074a32e9/1f5c5/861b909e12ad23825e54c01305bf2d55.webp 400w,\n/static/25712c985d226c3082aa727d074a32e9/58556/861b909e12ad23825e54c01305bf2d55.webp 800w,\n/static/25712c985d226c3082aa727d074a32e9/65bbe/861b909e12ad23825e54c01305bf2d55.webp 1147w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":0,"numPages":1,"currentPage":1,"id":5051,"name":"Cannabinoids","slug":"cannabinoids","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
