Over the last decade, marijuana consumption methods have shifted from joints and pipes to bongs to vape pens with pre-filled cannabis extract cartridges. \n\nWhile vape pens have skyrocketed in popularity—especially among new cannabis consumers—many complain that they can’t get enough medicinal marijuana benefit out of a vape pen compared to that of a bong or dab rig. \n\nHow can you get the convenience of a vape pen with the power and potency of a bong? You’ll find the answer in the latest trend related to cannabis consumption: carting. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What Is Carting? \n\nCarting combines pre-filled cannabis extract cartridges with bongs or dab rigs to improve the medicinal experience. To cart, you need a pre-filled vape pen and a water filtration device like a bong, dab rig or bubbler pipe. \n\nRELATED: [WHY DO SOME PATIENTS DAB MEDICAL MARIJUANA?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a4fd8fc100a820006562f52/why-do-some-patients-dab-medical-marijuana)\n\nNormally, with something like a bong, you’d add ground cannabis flower to the bowl at the base of the bong. Then, you’d light it on fire and inhale the smoke through the mouthpiece on the neck of the bong. \n\nCarting works similarly. But instead of using a bowl of marijuana flower, you insert the mouth of the vape pen cartridge into the base or bowl of the bong and inhale the vapor through water and then the neck. \n\nThis pulls the vapor through the bong, creating a larger hit of vapor than you’d normally be able to inhale from just using a vape pen. The vapor wells up in the bong as you pull through, and when you’re ready to inhale it, you just remove the vape pen or bowl from the base and inhale the cloud of vapor. \n\n### Why Do People Cart Cannabis? \n\nThere are a few reasons why people are starting to use this method to consume cannabis: \n\n* **You inhale bigger doses of vapor:** One important reason that people like carting is that it allows for larger doses of cannabis vapor to be inhaled at one time. For some medical marijuana patients, these large doses are what’s needed to treat their symptoms. \n\n>PTSD patients, for example, report that these [large, inhaled marijuana doses are the best way to snap them out of overwhelming flashbacks about their traumatic experiences](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a3403a5100a820006562ec2/using-pipes-and-bongs-to-smoke-medical-marijuana). \n\n>Patients with chronic pain also tend to need larger doses of cannabis. This is sometimes due to the severity of their symptoms and other times because of [the slow increase in tolerance that can come from consuming cannabis over time](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5abec477f24d1300077ccbb5/3-ways-to-keep-your-cannabis-tolerance-under-control). For many pain patients, a vape pen on its own is unlikely to do the trick. But add carting, and they can take that same medicine with a much better result. \n\n* **Carting is easy to set up:** For patients who like these larger doses, you may wonder why they don’t just stick to bongs and dab rigs. The answer is simple: ease of use. Carting offers an experience similar to a bong or dab rig, but without having to mess around with grinding up flower, working with sticky cannabis extract, or using a lighter or torch. Instead, your cannabis is ready to go in a clean and easy-to-use cartridge. \n\n* **The water reduces irritation:** Carting also works to filter the vapor that comes from your cartridge. By pulling the vapor through the water, it both cools the vapor, helping reduce irritation in the respiratory system as well as filter certain elements out of the vapor. Some argue that this produces a better result. \n\n>For example, Sam Campbell, Director of Marketing for MJ Arsenal, a company who makes a portable dab rig designed to fit on your vape pen says, “Cartridges, just like combusted flower, have impurities that benefit from filtration through water. You get a cleaner and smoother hit from a pen through a bubbler and enjoy, quite possibly, the smoothest hit you can find.”\n\n>But consumers should be aware that research on water filtration hasn’t been all positive. \n\n>Some studies have found that [water filtration can actually pull more cannabinoids out of the vapor than harmful contaminants](http://www.canorml.org/healthfacts/smokestudy.html). This means you may be breathing in more harmful substances (like tar) to get the same amount of cannabinoids—and some of the important medicinal cannabinoids may be wasted and left swimming in your bong water. \n\n>Still, some prefer the effect of vapor that’s been through water and the cooling effect the water gives. \n\n>If you want to skip the water filtration, there’s the option of just leaving your bong dry. This way, you’ll still get the other benefits of carting. \n\nRELATED: [USING PIPES & BONGS TO SMOKE MEDICAL MARIJUANA](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a3403a5100a820006562ec2/using-pipes-and-bongs-to-smoke-medical-marijuana)\n\n### How to Try Carting Your Marijuana \n\nLooking to cart yourself? It’s easy to start. All you need is:\n\n* A cartridge\n* A vape pen \n* Some kind of water filtration piece like a bong, bubbler or dab rig\n\nThe most important factor in having a smooth carting experience is making sure your cartridge fits well into the water filtration device. You want the mouthpiece of the cartridge to fit into the bowl (or the hole that the bowl goes in), so make sure to test this out first. \n\nThere are few options for what to use. If you already have a full-sized bong or dab rig to work with, it may or may not work with the size of your cartridge, and it will likely require you to flip your cartridge upside down. This isn’t ideal since only some carts work in that position.\n\nTo fix this problem, get a whip (a tube designed to fit into a bong) that fits on your cartridge on one side (10 mm is usually best for this) and your bong on the other. This will create a tight seal, and allow for upright vaping, retrofitting your device for its new purpose. \n\nIf you’re going to try carting using water filtration, fill up the bong or other device with a small amount of water. You want to be able to inhale through the neck of the bong with a strong pull, and not have any water come up through the neck. Test it out with clean water before you begin. \n\nOn other devices like a bubbler, there will be a carb (a small hole that shifts the airflow in the device). Keep your finger over the carb while you build up the vapor in the bubbler, then remove your finger when you’re ready to inhale and pull the vapor through. \n\nFor a more portable option, try a blunt bubbler. These are designed for use with a blunt or joint, but often fit well with a cartridge (especially those with a round mouthpiece). Because they’re small, they can be brought around with you wherever you go. This could be especially useful for medical marijuana patients who need to medicate throughout the day.\n\nThere are also products popping up that are designed particularly for carting, such as the Hydra VE from MJ Arsenal. Instead of a bowl, this tiny bong has a downward-facing piece that’s intended to fit over cartridges in an upright position. These may be the best option when it comes to carting, as they’re small, transportable and designed to interface with cartridges. \n\nOnce you have your equipment ready to go, you can try it out. Just be cautious as you’re starting out. Because you’re taking much bigger doses of cannabinoids with each inhalation, it’s easy to get too high too quickly. Start with just one inhalation and wait at least 30 minutes to notice how it affects you before trying more. \n\nPhoto credit: [Quinten de Graaf](https://unsplash.com/@quinten149)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b8882d88dd0720008373fcf/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-to-about-marijuana) index of articles. But instead, you’re dizzy, lethargic and way too high. \n\nThe room is spinning, and all you want to do is lay down on the couch and rest. Worst of all, the situation isn’t improving; it’s been hours and you still feel high.\n\nWhat went wrong? Well, you can pin it on a version of the infamous cannabis compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) called 11-hydroxy-THC. \n\nBad edible experiences are common, especially with folks who are new to taking cannabis in this form. These mishaps usually arise because of confusion about how different cannabis can affect us when eaten instead of inhaled. In fact, eating cannabis is so different because our bodies convert cannabis’s most potent and psychoactive chemical into a compound that’s even more powerful and mind-altering. \n\nLet’s delve into the science behind this version of THC, 11-hydroxy-THC, and how to harness its powerful effects for your medical needs. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What Is 11-Hydroxy-THC? \n\nThe cannabinoid that causes the powerful effects of cannabis edibles, 11-hydroxy-THC, isn’t actually found in the cannabis plant—and it’s not even part of your marijuana edible. This potent medicinal chemical is created by your body when it breaks down THC, which is technically known as delta-9-THC (but we’ll just refer to it as THC for simplicity).\n\nWhile there hasn’t been a lot of research into the medicinal effects of 11-hydroxy-THC, the research that has been done shows that [it has powerful psychoactive effects, and similar physiological effects to THC](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/4558903). Medical marijuana patients also report that edibles, which cause high levels of 11-hydroxy-THC, provide long-lasting pain relief and anti-inflammatory effects. \n\nRELATED: [CONSUMING CANNABIS EDIBLES TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a567e8fc7e0180007a7826c/consuming-cannabis-edibles-to-improve-your-health)\n\n### The Science of 11-Hydroxy-THC & Edibles \n\nIf 11-hydroxy-THC isn’t present in cannabis, how is it made? \n\nWell, it starts when you eat THC. This powerful and plentiful cannabinoid travels through your digestive system and eventually makes it to your liver where it’s broken down into other molecules called metabolites. While metabolites are usually more powerful than the compound being broken down, in some cases, they’re actually much more potent and powerful. This is the case with 11-hydroxy-THC.\n\nWhen you smoke THC, your body does create some 11-hydroxy-THC, but it’s around 10 times less than what’s created when you eat THC.\n\nSome believe this means 11-hydroxy-THC is as much as 10 times stronger than THC, but it isn’t quite as simple as that. While it’s much more potent, scientists say this estimate is too high based on their research. \n\nFor example, in one study two groups of patients were [intravenously given the same amount of either THC or 11-hydroxy-THC](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/4729039). Patients then reported on how high they felt afterwards. Subjects given THC reported on average a three out of 10 when asked how high they felt. Those who had 11-hydroxy-THC in their system reported an average of eight out of 10. \n\nThis suggests that 11-hydroxy-THC is more potent and powerful than THC is, but only two to three times more, not 10 times. The effects of both are present in edibles, but 11-hydroxy-THC is much more plentiful, so it should account for the majority of the edible’s effects. \n\n### The Benefits of 11-Hydroxy-THC\n\nWhile there hasn’t been nearly enough research on the specific medical effects of 11-hydroxy-THC, medical marijuana patients have been consuming edibles for their medical needs for thousands of years. There are benefits to taking edibles that keep patients coming back to them and to 11-hydroxy-THC. So, what makes this method different from the rest?\n\n* **Cannabis edibles last longer:** For one thing, edibles have longer-lasting effects. While they take longer to start working—typically 60–120 minutes as opposed to 10–15 minutes with smoking—they can last much longer. A cannabis edible high usually lasts six to eight hours, while the high from smoking only lasts around two or three hours. For patients with medical conditions like chronic pain, anxiety or depression, it can be especially helpful to have a long- lasting medicine that doesn’t require medicating over and over again throughout the day. \n\n* **Marijuana-infused foods are more sedative and psychoactive:** Folks have noted that the effects of edibles are slightly more sedative than when they smoke cannabis. This can make edibles a great choice for conditions like insomnia. A dose taken a few hours before bedtime can lead to a strong sense of sleepiness when it’s time for bed. Since it’s also long-lasting, the sedation can continue all the way through the night, fading just in time for morning. \n\n### How to Take 11-Hydroxy-THC\n\nIf you want to use 11-hydroxy-THC for your medical needs, there are two important things you should know to make sure you have a positive experience:\n\n>**1.** Not all edibles produce 11-hydroxy-THC to the same extent. This is because not all edibles contain high levels of THC. As it turns out, THC actually starts out as tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), which is the acidic form of THC. THCA has medical benefits but isn’t psychoactive, and it doesn’t metabolize into 11-hydroxy-THC. To create the THC needed to turn into 11-hydroxy-THC, [THCA needs to go through a process called decarboxylation](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56de6bd6c60fd50008000081/decarboxylating-marijuana-why-its-important) where it converts into delta-9-THC. This happens when it’s heated in a specific temperature range. \n\n>If you’re making your own edibles directly from cannabis, you’ll need to start with decarboxylation if you want to get the effects from 11-hydroxy-THC. If you’re [buying your cannabis edible](https://www.hellomd.com/products?category=Edibles) elsewhere, you want to look for an edible that’s made from THC rather than THCA or cannabidiol (CBD). Most edibles are THC-based and have already been decarboxylated, but it’s important to double check. \n\n>**2.** The other key factor for using 11-hydroxy-THC effectively is controlling your dose. It can be easy to eat too much of the edible for your needs. And because it takes one to two hours to start working, many times people think the edible isn’t working and too quickly they eat more after they’ve had their first dose. This is the worst thing you can do—and is a one-way ticket to a bad edible trip. \n\n>Instead, start with a very low dose, nothing above 2.5–5 mg. Then wait two hours before taking any more. You may not feel anything or you may feel very high, it depends on the person. But this dose is low enough that you shouldn’t have a bad trip. Once you know how the edible affects you, if you feel the dose was too low, try more next time, but only a little bit more. Increase your dose slowly in 2.5–5 mg increments each time. Once you’ve reached a dose that’s effective for dealing with your symptoms, stop and stay at that dose. \n\nWith these simple guidelines, you can begin to enjoy the benefits of 11-hydroxy-THC without having to deal with negative side effects.\n\nPhoto credit: [Foodie Factor](https://www.pexels.com/@foodie-factor-162291)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b8882d88dd0720008373fcf/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-to-about-marijuana) index of articles. Or the flavor boost that spices like oregano and dill can lend to your favorite foods? If you do, thank pinene, the very common terpene that gives these and many other plants their distinctive fragrance. \n\nBut pinene also has potent healing properties—and that makes pinene-rich cannabis strains especially effective for treating a long list of health conditions such as asthma, arthritis and Crohn’s disease.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Terpenes, Cannabinoids & the Endocannabinoid System\n\nPinene is one of a very large group of terpenes, fragrant oils produced by the glands of many kinds of plants. Because of their strong smells, terpenes ward off predators—but these pungent oils also benefit the human body and brain. \n\nTerpenes are found in so many plants that are used for flavoring food that a number of them are considered food grade, or safe for consumption (though some terpenes are still considered toxic when consumed in large quantities). Terpenes can also be extracted and used alone as essential oils.\n\nPinene is abundant in the plant world, and cannabis is no exception. Research continues to reveal new information about the properties of the more than 200 terpenes found in the various strains of the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. And numerous studies have shown that the major terpenes have considerable healing properties. Those properties play out in synergy with the other terpenes and cannabinoids that give each strain its unique chemical profile. \n\nLike the more familiar cannabinoid compounds tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), terpenes interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS), a vast network of receptors located throughout the body and brain. The ECS responds to both endocannabinoids produced by the body and to the nearly identical cannabinoids in cannabis. That explains why pinene, like the other major terpenes, can affect cells and tissues throughout the body.\n\n### Pinene’s Many Health Benefits\n\nPinene has two molecular forms: alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. The two are identical except for a single molecule; this accounts for their different features and actions. But both work in conjunction with the rest of a cannabis strain’s overall chemical profile to support health and ease the symptoms of a variety of conditions.\n\nIn nature, alpha-pinene is more prevalent than beta-pinene, and the same is true in cannabis. Alpha-pinene is responsible for the distinctive smell of pine needles and of some herbs, including rosemary. It also accounts for the smell of pine oil and turpentine, and it can also appear in citrus peel. Studies suggest that alpha-pinene might have more potent health benefits than beta-pinene does, but the beta form also plays an important role in protecting the body. \n\nBeta-pinene contributes to the fragrance of many cooking herbs including oregano, parsley and dill. In cannabis, it usually occurs in smaller amounts than the alpha version, but its connections to other terpenes create a synergistic effect. For example, beta-pinene appears to play a role in the production of another major terpene, myrcene, and some studies have shown that it can work with the terpene limonene) to fight viral infections.\n\n Several studies in recent years have revealed that pinene, particularly alpha-pinene, has a number of significant health benefits, including:\n\n* **Pain relief:** As an extracted oil and as part of a whole plant cannabis strain, pinene can affect the body’s pain receptors to reduce discomfort from conditions such as arthritis and fibromyalgia.\n\n* **Antioxidant properties:** Pinene can help to protect cells from excessive oxidation, which can break them down and make the body susceptible to a variety of diseases.\n\n* **Anti-inflammatory features:** Pinene can [reduce inflammation](https://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/np400828x), which can depress the immune system and stress cells and tissues.\n\n* **Anti-viral characteristics:** Some laboratory research reveals that [beta-pinene with limonene can be 100% effective in killing the common herpes simplex virus](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4393490/).\n\n* **Protection for the gastrointestinal system:** Pinene has been shown to [protect the lining of the stomach and other parts of the gastrointestinal system](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4329611/) against inflammation and lesions from conditions such as ulcers and Crohn’s disease.\n\n* **Neutralizing THC:** Pinene can inhibit the negative effects that come from consuming too much THC, such as short-term memory loss and feelings of fear and paranoia. That’s because it can cross the blood brain barrier and [directly affect the behavior of neurotransmitters in the brain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27573669), including GABA, a chemical that modulates mood, and the brain’s receptors for benzodiazepine medications.\n\n* **Bronchodilation:** Pinene can ease congestion and constriction in the lungs and bronchial areas, making breathing easier for people with asthma and other pulmonary conditions.\n\n### Where to Find Pinene\n\nPinene is just one component of the many cannabinoids, terpenes and other substances that make up the whole cannabis plant. It works with all those elements to create an individual strain’s unique profile and boost the healing effects of all those other elements as well. \n\nBut some cannabis strains are high in pinene, and most of them are easily identifiable by their distinctively piney smell. Along with supporting the body’s healing mechanisms, the top pinene-rich cannabis strains can promote calm and focus, and balance the effects of too much THC. \n\n\nPinene is also available as a pure terpene extract that can be used in vaping and dabbing with other forms of cannabis, or to add to foods for flavoring. It’s also widely sold as an essential oil for aromatherapy. \n\nPinene in small amounts is considered safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but it can have some toxic effects when it’s ingested or inhaled, particularly when used in various cleaning products such as turpentine. \n\nJust about everyone knows the scent of pinene, even if the name isn’t familiar. But pinene is more than just a nice scent—this abundant cannabis terpene has plenty of healing benefits for both the body and the brain.\n\nPhoto credit: [Jean Lakosnyk](https://unsplash.com/@lifelikeinspiration)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Some have natural ingredients or are farmed using sustainable practices while others can contain potentially harmful solvents, pesticides and additives. A marijuana product with lots of additives can increase the likelihood of leaving you with a negative experience. \n\nThen there’s the question of the effects you’re going for. Certain marijuana strains and products will make you sleepy; others may make your heart rate speed up. Even a quality product can cause you have a bad time if it’s not targeted to your needs. \n\nThen we move on to how to take the cannabis. There are some consumption methods that will make you feel high and others that are therapeutic without the psychoactivity. Some forms of cannabis are best for sleeping through the night, while others are preferable for fast pain relief.\n\nThat’s why picking a product can be so challenging. There are options for every person, every mood and every tolerance level. Choosing the wrong product for your first time can make the experience unpleasant, so it’s worth taking some time to think about your preferences before you place your order. \n\nThere are plenty of things to consider when selecting a cannabis product, but for your very first time, keep it simple by asking yourself these two questions: \n\n1. How do I want to feel? Energized or relaxed? High or not high?\n2. How do I want to ingest cannabis? Vaping, tincture or some other method?\n\n### 2. Being too Embarrassed to Ask the Cannabis Consultant Questions\n\nIf you’re completely overwhelmed with making a decision, don’t just scramble to find something quickly to get it over with. It’s OK to:\n\n* Take your time\n* Ask questions\n* Be conscious of the products you’re about to put into your body\n\nThe staff at the dispensary or delivery service is there to help you. There’s nothing embarrassing about wanting to spend your money on a product you’ll enjoy safely, especially your first time. Treat your cannabis consultant like a teacher:\n\n* Ask them about the products they like\n* Which are grown without pesticides\n* What’s good for the particular ailment you’re looking to treat\n\nThey get paid to be a resource for you. And remember, if you want detailed information about a product, you can always ask for lab test results. \n\nAnd if you don’t live near a dispensary or you still feel uneasy about asking someone face to face, head over to our [Answers](https://www.hellomd.com/answers) page where you can post a question that a knowledgeable doctor or nurse, cannabis industry veteran or seasoned marijuana consumer will answer. \n\n### 3. Not Waiting Long Enough Before Taking Another Dose of Cannabis\n\nThis is such a common mistake that you’ve probably heard at least one version of this story. Someone tries marijuana for the first time, takes the right dose, but it doesn’t feel like anything’s happening. Rather than waiting longer for the cannabis to fully kick in, they take another dose and then end up being too high to function. \n\nWith all cannabis products, but especially edibles, which don’t have an immediate effect, wait 45 minutes to an hour before re-dosing. This will allow enough time for your body to fully process the cannabinoids. Then, you can assess how you feel and make an informed decision about whether you’re comfortable with more.\n\nIt’s always better to ingest less marijuana and add more later than it is to overload yourself right away and be uncomfortably high. \n\nRELATED: [NEW TO CANNABIS? 6 THINGS YOU NEED TO \nKNOW](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a35c4a4100a820006562f25/new-to-cannabis-6-things-you-need-to-know)\n\n### 4. Not Being Prepared for the Munchies, Red Eyes or Cotton Mouth\n\nThree of the most common side effects of cannabis are increased hunger, dry or red eyes and a dry mouth. While they seem like pretty mild problems, they really can be quite annoying. Luckily, each of these is very simple to take care of. \n\nIf you find your peepers are getting dry and bloodshot, keep eye drops nearby. To deal with cotton mouth, stay hydrated by drinking water before and after you consume cannabis, and maybe even stock your fridge with some fresh juice. Chewing gum can also help as it stimulates your saliva glands, which tend to decrease their production when THC is present.\n\nIf you want to avoid the guilt of snacking too much after taking marijuana, gather some healthy snacks like fresh fruit or veggies and dip before you consume. And if you want to avoid snacking at all, you can try satisfying your flavor cravings by having something as simple as a pack of gum or some mints on hand. \n\nIf the munchies continue to be a problem for you, look into marijuana strains high in the cannabinoid [tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), which has been shown to suppress appetite](https://hellomd.com/articles/psychoactive-thcv-the-cannabinoid-that-kills-your-appetite). \n\nPhoto credit: [Hannah Nelson](https://www.pexels.com/@hannah-nelson-390257)\n\n[HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/) can help you get your medical marijuana recommendation; it's easy, private and 100% online. \n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/2wBDABALDA4MChAODQ4SERATGCgaGBYWGDEjJR0oOjM9PDkzODdASFxOQERXRTc4UG1RV19iZ2hnPk1xeXBkeFxlZ2P/2wBDARESEhgVGC8aGi9jQjhCY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2NjY2P/wgARCAAOABQDASIAAhEBAxEB/8QAGAAAAgMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIDBAX/xAAVAQEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAf/aAAwDAQACEAMQAAABz5qqo4Ff/8QAGRABAAIDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAgARAyJC/9oACAEBAAEFAowTjqc3ceq//8QAFBEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEP/aAAgBAwEBPwE//8QAFBEBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEP/aAAgBAgEBPwE//8QAGhAAAgIDAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAECERAhYf/aAAgBAQAGPwIg73LK4Uf/xAAaEAADAAMBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAREhMUFh/9oACAEBAAE/IcJCD1uyMN2/YN4PiIRu3h//2gAMAwEAAgADAAAAEFAP/8QAFxEAAwEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAERIf/aAAgBAwEBPxBRLSTGf//EABcRAQEBAQAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEAIRH/2gAIAQIBAT8QVXIe6X//xAAcEAEBAAICAwAAAAAAAAAAAAABEQAhQYFRcZH/2gAIAQEAAT8QCvHgCU7nRx4wrrKjtBiZjRL3b9cYjUb6z//Z","aspectRatio":1.3888888888888888,"src":"/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/14b42/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.jpg","srcSet":"/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/f836f/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.jpg 200w,\n/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/2244e/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.jpg 400w,\n/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/14b42/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.jpg 800w,\n/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/47498/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.jpg 1200w,\n/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/0e329/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.jpg 1600w,\n/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/0cde8/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.jpg 3671w","srcWebp":"/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/58556/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/61e93/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.webp 200w,\n/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/1f5c5/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.webp 400w,\n/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/58556/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.webp 800w,\n/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/99238/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.webp 1200w,\n/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/7c22d/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.webp 1600w,\n/static/2446436841c48afb8fc8275f630091e8/2bed0/012497fc675d9f07a02d938121ee956c.webp 3671w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2788-markdown","title":"Can You Really Overdose on Marijuana?","slug":"can-you-really-overdose-on-marijuana","content":"Can you overdose on marijuana? It’s a frequent question that cannabis newbies ask. And the common response has been: “No one has ever died from taking too much cannabis.” This answer so far has proven to be true.\n\nYou can certainly overdo it when it comes to cannabis, but it won’t be the end of you. How do we know this? Well, in 1988, a judge from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) sought to reschedule marijuana. In his ruling, he stated that you’d have to smoke about [1,500 pounds of cannabis in 15 minutes](http://www.ccguide.org/young88.php) to induce a lethal response—a feat no one could ever even attempt, let alone complete. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Overdosing vs. Overconsuming Marijuana \n\n“Overdosing in the traditional narcotic sense is when someone uses an opioid to the point where their respiratory rate decreases. This decrease in respiration can be accompanied by vomiting and choking, which can also lead to death,” says [Dr. Perry Solomon](https://www.hellomd.com/people/54cc02df6465320003000000/perry-solomon-md/articles), HelloMD’s chief medical officer. \n\nA decrease in respiration can ultimately lead to: \n\n* Brain damage\n* Cardiac arrest\n* Respiratory arrest\n* Coma or death\n\n“Cannabis doesn't cause this type of traditional overdose,” says Dr. Solomon. “People who have too much cannabis are having cannabis with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content that’s too high for them, specifically,” he says. \n\nRELATED: [5 TIPS TO REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF HAVING TOO MUCH CANNABIS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a5cfdb5c7e0180007a78273/5-tips-to-reduce-the-effects-of-having-too-much-cannabis)\n\nMost folks who’ve consumed cannabis are familiar with the symptoms of consuming too much THC. These symptoms include: \n\n* Anxiety\n* Paranoia\n* Increased respiration \n* Increased heart rate\n\nYou may be wondering about THC’s cousin, cannabidiol (CBD)—can you take too much of this molecule? “People are taking hundreds of milligrams of CBD, and I've never read or heard about any side effects that would be classified as an over usage or overdose of CBD products,” he says. \n\nDr. Solomon adds that you can take too much of anything, and that if you did somehow overdo it with CBD, you’d probably just be knocked out for a few hours. \n\nThis doesn’t mean that consuming large amounts of marijuana is completely harmless for everyone. Some research suggests that the plant can cause [complications in those with cardiac issues](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29218644) due to THC’s ability to increase heart rate. However, if marijuana were the cause of death in this circumstance, it wouldn’t qualify as an overdose in the traditional sense. \n\n### Why You Can’t Overdose on Cannabis, Scientifically Speaking \n\nCannabis and opioids bring about effects in our bodies by attaching to specific receptors located on our cells. The network of receptors that cannabis works on is called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). And while this system’s receptors can be found in the brain, they’re also found throughout the body in places like our gut, skeleton and immune cells.\n\nOpioids, in contrast, work on a set of receptors confined to the brain, spinal cord and digestive system. These opioid receptors are particularly plentiful in the brainstem, an area of our brain that controls key life functions like breathing, heart rate and consciousness. \n\nWhen a person takes an opioid, the drug’s molecules attach to these receptors to bring about effects like pleasure and pain relief. However, when consumed in large amounts, these drugs can overwhelm these areas, which are responsible for important life processes. Ultimately, this disruption can have deadly consequences, like slowing or even stopping breathing. \n\nOn the other hand, ECS receptors are notably lacking in the brainstem. The absence of these receptors from this key area of the brain likely contributes to why it’s impossible to overdose on cannabis. \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. You’ve probably seen cartridges prefilled with cannabis oil, like those sold by [Bloom Farms](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/57730c61e878f80007000026/bloom-farms) and [Jetty Extracts](https://www.hellomd.com/brands/5890ded5519db3000cf0f665/jetty-extracts), which require a separate battery to function.\n\nYou may have also seen a new type of vaporizer pen popping up in the last year or so: the disposable vape pen. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What’s the Difference Between a Prefilled Cartridge & a Disposable Vape Pen? \n\nIf you want to use a cartridge that’s been prefilled with cannabis oil, you also need to buy a battery. The battery provides power for the atomizer, or heating element, in the cartridge. This atomizer is what turns the cannabis oil into vapor form. To activate these atomizers, you either push a button or simply inhale. \n\n#### Pros of cartridge pens:\n\n* Batteries are reusable.\n* Some cartridges can be refilled and reused, though most are disposable.\n* Most cartridges follow the industry standard of 510 threading—this means you can use the same battery for different cartridges.\n* There are more cannabis oil options than disposable vape pens available. \n\n#### Cons of cartridge pens:\n\n* Battery requires recharging after a certain amount of use.\n* The battery and cartridge should be cleaned periodically.\n\nRELATED: [THE INS & OUTS OF VAPING MEDICAL MARIJUANA](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a1f473a100a820006562eb3/the-ins-and-outs-of-vaping-medical-marijuana)\n\nUnlike cartridge pens, disposable vape pens are one unit: The oil, atomizer, battery and other components are all contained within the pen. To trigger the heating element, simply inhale. \n\nBecause these pens are easy to use and can be thrown away once the oil is gone, they’re popular among cannabis newbies, canna-tourists and those who aren’t ready to purchase more expensive vaping options. \n\n#### Pros of disposable vape pens:\n \n* Battery doesn’t require charging.\n* No cleaning or other maintenance is necessary.\n* They tend to be better priced than prefilled cartridges.\n\n#### Cons of disposable vape pens: \n\n* Battery isn’t reusable, and the entire pen must be thrown away; this creates more waste, though some disposable vape pen brands have recycling programs. So, customers can bring back used pens to the dispensary where they purchased it from.\n\n### Things to Keep in Mind When Shopping for a Disposable Vape Pen \n\n1. **Look on the box or ask a cannabis consultant how many doses are in a single pen.** Depending on the pen, you can get anywhere from 50 to 200 doses. Decide how often you’ll be using the pen, and how many doses you think are appropriate for your needs. If you’re shopping on a budget, divide the price by the number of doses to see which pens will give you the best deal. \n\n2. **See if the company has a recycling program.** If you’re interested in trying a disposable vape pen but are worried about creating waste, some companies allow consumers to return their used vape pen to the dispensary where they bought it from. Companies may even give you credit towards your next purchase to encourage consumers to participate in their recycling program. \n\n3. **Ask about the cannabis oil in the pen.** This includes extraction methods and whether there are any additives in the cannabis oil. Vaping can be a much healthier option than smoking is—that is, if you know [how to vape marijuana safely](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b0326f6bf4c4d000a0e7389/how-to-vape-marijuana-safely). \n\n### Top 3 Disposable Vape Pen Brands\n\nThere’s a lot to choose from if you’re shopping around for a disposable vape pen. That’s because cannabinoids like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are fat-soluble. This means that you need to eat marijuana edibles with fats to make the cannabinoids available to the body.\n\nBut recent research reveals that the [connection between fats and cannabis](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5009397/) is more complex than that, with important implications for making the most of marijuana’s many medicinal properties.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Cannabis Compounds Are Lipophiles—Why Is This Important? \n\nChemicals that people consume such as vitamins, supplements and medications are either water soluble or fat soluble. This means that they can dissolve and become bioavailable either by water or fat. Water-soluble substances such as vitamin C and B-complex vitamins dissolve easily in water, so that excess amounts of these chemicals are washed out through the kidneys. \n\nBut fat-soluble substances like vitamins A and K are lipophiles, or fat lovers. This means that they depend on fats in order to become available to the body. Instead of being flushed out through the kidneys, these substances accumulate over time in the body’s fatty tissues. This is why it can be easy to reach potentially toxic levels of these kinds of chemicals if a person consumes too much of them.\n\nCannabis researchers have identified more than 60 compounds in the cannabis sativa plant. Most of them appear to be inactive and don’t have a particular effect on humans. But euphoria-inducing THC and immune-boosting, inflammation-fighting CBD top the list of active cannabinoids that mimic the effects of the body’s own endocannabinoid system (ECS). \n\nWhen you smoke or vape cannabis, these cannabinoid molecules can directly enter the capillaries in the lungs and quickly move from there into the bloodstream. Then they circulate to the brain and other parts of the body. But eating cannabis won’t produce the same result. It’s simply broken down by the digestive system and passed on out of the body. \n\nThis is because cannabis compounds are all lipophiles. They need fats to dissolve and become bioavailable. They also accumulate in the body’s own fatty tissues. So, to be most effective, cannabis needs to be accompanied by dietary fats of some kind—and the fattier the better.\n\n### Fats Trigger the Intestinal Lymphatic System\n\nThe lymphatic system is a [widespread network that supports immune functioning](https://www.livescience.com/26983-lymphatic-system.html) and helps the body eliminate toxins and waste. Hundreds of lymph nodes are found throughout the body, and most people are familiar with them as glands in the armpit, groin or neck that swell up in response to an infection.\n\nBut the body also has a lymphatic system in the digestive tract. And recent research has found that this [intestinal lymphatic system plays an important role](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5674070/) in making the compounds in cannabis edibles accessible to the body.\n\nWhen a person eats a cannabis edible that contains a high-fat ingredient or has a relatively high- fat meal along with eating a marijuana edible, these fats appear to stimulate activity in the intestinal lymphatic system. In this way, the compounds that are dissolved in fats are transported into the bloodstream by this secondary lymphatic system and made available to the body.\n\n### Not All Fats Are Equally as Good at Making Marijuana Bioavailable\n\nMany people who make cannabis edibles or extracts at home say that butter is a favorite carrier for delivering the full benefits of THC and/or CBD. This is because butter is a saturated fat. Saturated fats, which are mainly found in animal products, are high in long-chain fatty acids and are the most effective medium for dissolving cannabis compounds.\n\nPlant-based fats—such as olive oil, sesame oil or avocado oil—are unsaturated. Although they can make cannabis compounds bioavailable too, they may not deliver the full effect as efficiently as saturated animal fats do. \n\nRELATED: [COOKING WITH CANNABIS](https://hellomd.com/articles/cooking-with-cannabis)\n\nOne significant exception is coconut oil. In recent years, the coconut has taken the natural health world by storm for its ability to deliver the health benefits of saturated fat without the damaging effects that saturated fats can have on the heart and cardiovascular system. And now, cannabis edible enthusiasts are embracing coconut oil as perhaps the ideal carrier for edible cannabis compounds. \n\nCoconut oil is around 90% saturated fat. But because it’s plant based, that fat derives from medium-chain fatty acids that don’t typically cause the hardening of the arteries and cholesterol clogging action that saturated animal fats can. \n\nYou don’t have to consume a lot of fat in an edible itself to get the benefits of cannabinoids. New studies reveal that eating a high-fat meal along with your cannabis edible can achieve similar results.\n\n### Cannabis Builds Up in Fatty Tissues\n\nCannabis has an affinity for fat in other ways, too. Because excess amounts of fat-soluble chemicals and compounds aren’t flushed from the body the way water soluble ones are, cannabis compounds can be stored in the body’s fat cells for 30 days or more. \n\nOver this period of time, these compounds are gradually released back into the bloodstream and eventually eliminated. But in the meantime, they’re still detectable in the body. This is why it’s possible to test positive for THC well after the last time you consumed it. It’s also why some athletes who work out hard claim to get high from the THC that’s released when they’re burning body fat, well after they actually consumed marijuana.\n\nIt’s true that [THC levels can test higher after a workout](http://healthland.time.com/2013/09/17/one-toke-many-hits-exercise-could-trigger-additional-high-for-marijuana-users/), because of what’s stored in fatty tissue. But is it enough for you to feel high, too? The jury’s still out on that one. \n\nThe complex ways in which cannabis and fat interact can have serious implications for the medical uses of cannabis. If you’re taking your cannabis in edible forms, whether—and how— you consume them with fat has a major impact on whether you’re getting the optimal dose of the cannabis compounds you need.\n\nBut cannabis compounds love fat. And combining them with the right kinds of fat can make the health benefits of cannabis edibles even more potent. \n\nPhoto credit: [Niklas Rhöse]( https://unsplash.com/photos/FlmXvqlD-nI)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana) post. While most cannabis consumers eventually figure out a few products that work well for them, the process requires quite a bit of time and effort. In this, our final installment of the Cannabis for Newbies guide, we show you how to bring together everything you’ve learned to create a cannabis plan that’s tailor-made for you. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What’s a Cannabis Plan? \n\nA cannabis plan is pretty simple. It contains:\n\n* A description of what cannabis you consume\n* What you use it for\n* How you use it\n* When you use it\n* How much of it you use\n\nBy writing all of this down and organizing the information, you can create your own protocol for achieving your desired effects as well as plan ahead for what you’ll need—both in terms of finding the right strains when you need them as well as having the funds to pay for them. \n\nHaving a written cannabis plan can also help a great deal in discussions with doctors or others interested in knowing the particulars of how and why you use your cannabis. And you can use your plan to track any changes in habit, tolerance levels and how much you’re using.\n\n### Review Your Cannabis Journal\n\nIn our previous article, we gave tips on how to maintain a cannabis journal as a place to record the details of your cannabis experiences. Once you’ve done some experimenting and journaling, you’ll likely begin to notice some trends. To get started with your cannabis plan, look over your cannabis journal to notice what’s been working well and what hasn’t. Look for the marijuana strains that worked the best to manage your symptoms, without too many unpleasant side effects.\n\nIt may take some folks longer than others to find a strain that works. As well, you’ll likely refine your tastes as you continue to use cannabis. Still, when you feel like you have something that works better for you than nothing at all, you can start to create a cannabis plan. \n\n### Start a Cannabis Plan\n\nTo get started with your plan, find a blank page in your cannabis journal. Along the top of the page, write down these headings:\n\n* Desired Effect\n* Product\n* Method\n* Dose\n* Context\n* Average Times per Day\n* Daily Amount\n* Monthly Amount\n\nYour headlines should look something like this:\n\n![Start a cannabis plan](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-c9d739ea-ece5-4bd2-9c0f-d2f4d3da1d94/original.jpg)\n\nThen, on the far left side of the page, under the heading Desired Effect, write down any effects you’re trying to achieve with cannabis. For example, I might write down:\n\n* Relieve nausea\n* Decrease anxiety\n* Alleviate chronic pain \n\nStarting with the effects is important, because it puts the focus on each person’s reasons for using cannabis. By breaking things down by individual effects, you can create a highly customized plan that takes into account the full spectrum of your cannabis experiences. \n\n### Fill Out the Details of Your Cannabis Plan\n\nNext, look at one desired effect at a time, filling in the details about how you can achieve those effects. Using my example above, the idea would be to start with the desired effect: relieve nausea. \n\nUse the contents of your cannabis journal to revisit your cannabis experiences. What products worked best for your first desired effect?\n\nIn my case, I’d look back at my records to find strains that were effective in relieving nausea. For me, the cannabis strain Afgoo works well, so in the Product column, I’d add, “Afgoo flower.”\n\nIn the Method column, write whatever method of using cannabis works best for the symptom or desired effect you’re looking at. Again using my example, I would write, “smoking joint,” because that’s the method that best relieves my nausea. \n\n![Fill out your cannabis plan](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-61c460fb-3a76-49d9-80bd-926315f02206/original.jpg)\n\nOnce you’ve completed the first three columns, record the amount of your average dose. You may find that you require different doses for different applications and with different forms of cannabis. When it comes to relieving nausea, I find a quarter joint (or around .175 grams) is effective, so that’s what I’d write down. \n\nThen, in the Context column, give some details on the context for when you take cannabis to help with a desired effect. Do you use it at regular times every day, like smoking each night before bed. Or do you respond to symptoms by using cannabis as they arise? This also may differ depending on the desired effect.\n\nFor nausea, I’d go with, “Use whenever nausea arises.” In the Average Times per Day column, estimate how many times a day you need to consume cannabis for this purpose. For nausea, I I’d jot down: “3–4x.”\n\n![Add dose and context to your cannabis plan](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-e8031380-7a6e-4a35-9629-dde77d5fb80e/original.jpg)\n\nUsing a calculator, multiply the number in the Dose column with the number in the Average Times per Day column; record the resulting number in the Daily Amount column. This is the amount you use for that desired effect each day.\n\nTo relieve nausea, I’d write, “.525-.7 grams (3/4–1 joint).” I would then take this number and multiply it by 30 to find the average amount I’d need each month. That amount would be “15.75–21 grams (22–30 joints)” in my example.\n\n![Add daily and monthly amounts to your cannabis plan](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-4550ed9d-a16b-4663-832d-1814148244cd/original.jpg)\n\n### Complete Your Cannabis Plan\n\nWhen you’ve filled in all of the details for your first desired effect, do the same with each desired effect you’ve listed.\n\nYou may want to add up the monthly amount for each effect to get an idea of the total amount of cannabis you need each month. You can record the total at the bottom of your page. Your finished plan will look something like this:\n\n![Completed content plan](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-c645c436-8492-4bc6-9279-1cc13b3dfb2e/original.jpg)\n\nHaving this information will help you effectively budget for and plan around your cannabis needs. Sometimes, folks are surprised by how much they’re using or how much they have spent on cannabis. Most get cannabis as they need it, usually in small amounts, and don’t always track the spending. By figuring out exactly what you need—and learning to budget around that, you can quickly learn if you’re spending more than you can afford, so you can rework your strategy.\n\nWhen you finish your planning process, you’ll have a really good idea of your cannabis needs, and what it’ll cost to obtain it. You’ll have created a monthly shopping list for cannabis as well as a procedure for using cannabis to treat each desired effect.\n\nThis exercise may seem really basic, but it can give you a huge advantage. Focusing on what products work best and creating a plan around that is incredibly empowering. Most cannabis consumers eventually figure out a few products that work really well for them. But not everyone has found their ideal cannabis product—or if they have, they may not remember what it was called.\n\nIf having consistently positive cannabis experiences has been a challenge for you, cannabis journaling is something you should consider doing. The simple practice of recording your experiences with marijuana can greatly improve your ability to find your favorites and repeat only your best experiences. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Why Keep a Cannabis Journal? \n\nStarting and keeping a cannabis journal may sound like an unnecessary hassle to some, but it can make all the difference in terms of having consistently positive experiences with the plant. Even if you’re incredibly self-aware, if you don’t record your experience, you’re likely to forget it or at least recall it in less detail.\n\nPeople tend to overestimate their ability to remember experiences and events, and can even create false memories without realizing it. This problem can be compounded by the [short-term memory issues that sometimes accompany cannabis experiences](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/5938cd59be4f6d4929985726/cannabis-and-its-effects-on-memory-retention). By cataloging your experiences, you’ll be able to have an accurate record to draw from as you fine-tune your cannabis plan. \n\nBefore you get started with your cannabis journaling experience, gather the materials you need:\n\n* A journal\n* A pen\n* Any cannabis product you’d like to try \n\nRELATED: [FINDING THE IDEAL CANNABIS STRAIN TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a77e254f24d1300077ccb2e/finding-the-ideal-cannabis-strain-to-suit-your-needs)\n\n### Step 1: Tune In & Record Your Baseline State\n\nIn the previous Cannabis for Newbies article, we discussed [how to use mindful awareness to tune in to what you want from cannabis](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b4646438904b90007731ad0/mindful-exercises-to-enhance-your-cannabis-experience) and how different cannabis products affect you. If you haven’t performed these mindful exercises yet, consider trying them prior to starting a journal. They’re an easy way to pick up on what’s happening, giving you some material to write down. \n\nThe first step in cannabis journaling is to observe your physical sensations before you use any cannabis. Notice how you feel. Is anything particularly painful, pleasant or uncomfortable? Is there anything you’d like cannabis to help with specifically? \n\nWhile you’re assessing your physical sensations, take the time to record all of the details. How were you feeling before cannabis? What kind of effects are you hoping for? Be as specific as you’d like. The more detail, the better.\n\n### Step 2: Medicate With Cannabis & Wait \n\nOnce you’ve recorded your baseline state—that is, how you’re feeling before consuming cannabis, you can move onto medicating with marijuana.\n\nConsume your cannabis product, and record any details about the experience. What was the product you’re using? Was it flower, an edible, oil or topical? How did it taste and smell? What was your dose? Note the brand and where you obtained the product. If it’s strain-specific, note the strain. \n\nYou should also pay attention to the method of consumption. For example, you may find that a strain works well when you vape it, but not when you smoke it. Be sure to note these differences so you can look for methods that deliver the effects that meet your needs.\n\nAnother factor you may want to take note of is the way your cannabis was grown: Was it grown indoors, outdoors or greenhouse? Was it organic or grown with synthetic nutrients? Any details you can provide will help you on your journey to finding your ideal cannabis product. \n\nWhen you’ve finished medicating and recording the product details, set a timer. If you’re using a quick-acting method like smoking, vaping or taking sublinguals, set it to go off in 20–30 minutes. If you’re using edibles, the timer should be set to ring in 90 minutes or so.\n\n### Step 3: Record the Effects of Cannabis\n\nWith the effects of cannabis starting to set in, the ringing of your timer is meant to remind you to tune back into your physical sensations. How do you feel now? Record any painful, pleasant or uncomfortable sensations. \n\nWhat are the positive and negative effects that you’re experiencing? Feel free to look at the notes you made describing how you felt before you medicated. What has changed? Be specific. If you notice an effect or relief from a symptom, write it down. It will be helpful later on. \n\n### Making a Cannabis Plan\n\nWhen you’ve collected journal entries on a variety of different cannabis products, you can look back through these records and note common trends. It can be helpful when recalling how a particular strain affected you. What strains help you with your particular symptoms? Which ones cause unpleasant side effects? Now that you have a record to look back on, and are discovering these factors, you can hone in on your ideal cannabis strains, methods of consumptions and product lines. \n\nIn our final installment of the Cannabis for Newbies guide, we show you how to create your own customized cannabis plan. With everything you’ve learned through this series, you now have the tools you need to create a plan that makes sense for your specific needs and individual biochemistry. \n\nPhoto credit: [Sandis Helvigs](https://unsplash.com/@sandishelvigs)\n\nNeed a doctor’s recommendation? In this article, we explore the intersection between mindful awareness and cannabis more deeply by going over some easy mindfulness practices you can use in conjunction with cannabis. Trying these simple exercises can help you get the most out of your cannabis experience.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Exercise #1 to Enhance Your Cannabis Experience: Body Scan \n\nOur first exercise is an adaptation of a basic mindfulness technique called a body scan. To perform a body scan, rest all of your attention and awareness on your body. Starting at one end of the body, say the feet, slowly move your attention through each area of the body, noticing all of the physical sensations happening in each area of the body. \n\nWithout the use of cannabis, this is a helpful practice that allows you to tune into your body and its needs. The [regular use of mindfulness practices](http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/topic/mindfulness/definition) has been shown to:\n\n* Reduce chronic pain\n* Boost the immune system\n* Decrease stress and depression\n* Improve memory and attention skills\n* Improve your abilities as a spouse and as a parent\n\nOften, just the simple act of paying attention can help ease chronic pain, tension and other conditions, but it also gives you valuable insight into your internal state. \n\nWhen you add cannabis to the equation, a body scan can help you better understand what your needs are before consuming the plant. It can also help you gauge your response to different cannabis products. By comparing your body scan experiences before and after cannabis, you can begin to understand which products are helping, and which might be making things worse.\n\nHere are some simple instructions to guide you through a cannabis body scan.\n\n* **Step 1:** Before consuming any cannabis, start with a normal body scan to establish your baseline. Take note of how you’re feeling, paying special attention to anything painful or challenging. Does your back ache? Are you feeling tired? \n\n* **Step 2:** After you complete the body scan, take notes on what you experienced, whether painful or positive. \n\n* **Step 3:** Once you’ve established and recorded your baseline, test out a cannabis product. Wait until the effects have set in. \n\n* **Step 4:** When you’re feeling the effects of the cannabis, perform a second body scan. In this second body scan, take note of what’s changed. Does your back ache less? Are you less tired? Or maybe you feel more fatigued or have a headache you didn’t have before consuming marijuana. \n\n* **Step 5:** Record what’s happening in your body with this second body scan, then compare your notes to the ones you took in Step 2. How did the cannabis change your experience? Comparing your experiences before and after cannabis consumption can be a powerful tool for honing in on options that work best for you.\n\nRELATED: [HELLOMD MINDFUL HAVEN EVENT: CANNABIS, YOGA & SOUND BATHING](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/596002c4756dcd0ac7daad67/hellomd-mindful-haven-event-cannabis-yoga-and-sound-bathing)\n\n### Exercise #2 to Enhance Your Cannabis Experience: Body Mapping \n\nOnce you’ve had some time to practice performing body scans, you may want to try body mapping. This practice takes body scans to the next level by creating a representation of what you’re experiencing.\n\nIn body mapping, first take an outline of the human body, then color in visual representations of the physical sensations you experience in a body scan. This practice can help bring out aspects of your experience that you never noticed before.\n\n* **Step 1:** To get started, gather your supplies. You’ll need a cannabis product to consume, some paper along with pens, pencils or crayons in a variety of colors. \n\n* **Step 2:** Draw two outlines of the human body on a piece of paper. Label them “before” and “after.”\n\n* **Step 3:** Using a body scan as your guide, color in the body outline labeled “before” with representations of what you’re feeling. Use color and texture to add depth and meaning. For example, if I feel a sharp pain in my shoulder, I might draw a jagged red line across the shoulder of the body outline. If I feel queasy, I might draw a yellow spiral on the stomach area. If I feel loving and happy, I might draw a pink heart in the center of my chest with lines radiating out from the center. Make up your own symbols and associations as you record the state your body is in. Ask yourself questions like: What’s the shape, color or texture of this feeling? You may be surprised with the answers you give.\n\n* **Step 4:** Medicate using your cannabis product and wait until it begins to affect you. \n\n* **Step 5:** When you’re feeling the effects of the cannabis, color in the outline of your body labeled “after” with the same methods used in Step 3. Take note of what’s changed in your two pictures. \n\n* **Step 6:** You can also extend the body mapping practice, making drawings multiple times during your cannabis experience. Your sensations may change completely between the first half hour of being medicated versus two hours in. Try setting a timer every hour to see how your sensations shift at each of these points. It will give you a whole new perspective on how different cannabis products affect you. \n\n### Recording Your Cannabis Experiences\n\nThese mindful exercises are a great way to start tuning into your cannabis experiences—and to learn more about how different cannabis options affect you.\n\nThis is just the beginning though. In the next installment of the Cannabis for Newbies guide, we'll get into the merits of cannabis journaling. Now, we shift gears to talk about mindful awareness. This powerful practice, which has a wide range of health and well-being benefits, can also be used to help improve your cannabis experience. Could mindfulness be the key to finding your best cannabis options?\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What Is Mindfulness?\n\nA popular buzzword these days, mindfulness is also a powerful practice. To be mindful is to maintain a present, moment-to-moment awareness of your thoughts, feelings, sensations and perceptions. The practice also involves taking an open, loving attitude towards everything you’re experiencing. \n\nWhile our instincts are to distract ourselves from pain, pushing negative experiences away, mindful practices encourage us to pull those experiences closer and turn our full attention towards them. When we stop fighting these sensations and embrace them, they often lose their hold on us, diminishing in intensity or vanishing altogether. \n\nMindfulness has its roots in Buddhist meditation practices, but over the last few decades, scientists and medical professionals have begun to study its usefulness in modern medicine. Now, [studies showing the many benefits of mindfulness are pouring in](http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/topic/mindfulness/definition). The regular use of mindfulness practices has been shown to:\n\n* Reduce chronic pain\n* Boost the immune system\n* Decrease stress and depression\n* Improve memory and attention skills\n* Improve your abilities as a spouse/partner and as a parent\n\n### Mindfulness to Better Understand Cannabis’s Effects on You\n\nMindfulness can also be invaluable in understanding and refining your personal cannabis use. It can help you get more in touch with your physical sensations; this can be the key to finding products that are particularly suited to you.\n\nCannabis’s active ingredients can offer a wide range of potential medical and recreational effects. When you take into account the many different strains, chemical components and various methods of taking cannabis, it’s clear that cannabis is a extremely complex plant. \n\nTo add to that complexity, people can react quite differently to the various cannabis options. A strain that makes one person feel energized and relaxed may make another individual feel anxious and lethargic. Research shows that [87% of cannabis consumers ultimately choose only one to three cannabis products that they use regularly](https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/hellomd-news/HelloMD_Medical_Marijuana_Patient_Survey.pdf). If you’re just getting started, a crucial step is to find out which products, strains or methods of using cannabis work best for you.\n\nBy paying more attention to the subtle signs that your body is giving you, you’ll be better able to distinguish what cannabis options are working—and which are making things worse. \n\nRELATED: [HELLOMD MINDFUL HAVEN EVENT: CANNABIS, YOGA & SOUND BATHING](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/596002c4756dcd0ac7daad67/hellomd-mindful-haven-event-cannabis-yoga-and-sound-bathing)\n\n### Noticing the Warning Signs When Trying a New Marijuana Strain\n\nTo give an example, I recently tried a strain of cannabis I’d never used before. At first, the strain gave me some energy and a little bit of a euphoric sensation. But after a few minutes I began to notice a few warning signs. My jaw felt clenched. My heart rate was accelerating. I could feel a slight bit of tension in my forehead.\n\nFor me, these are all signs of increased anxiety, which I can easily get from marijuana strains that are too energetic for me. As soon as I noticed these effects, I stopped using that strain and haven’t had more since. \n\nIn the past, I may not have noticed these effects from the cannabis. I may have noticed the energy and the euphoria that came with the first few inhalations, and then thought I needed more when the anxiety started to hit.\n\nOr more likely, I wouldn’t have thought about it either way, because I wasn’t paying attention. I would've continued to use the cannabis strain until the really uncomfortable side effects had truly set in. Then, intense headache, anxiety and muscle tension would overwhelm me. When it was too late, I would’ve realized my mistake.\n\nBut with regular mindfulness practices, my ability to notice these signs has increased. Now, it’s very rare that I get unwanted effects from cannabis. When I notice early signs, I can switch to something else and avoid a negative experience. I can also take notice of the strains that work especially well for me.\n\n### Harnessing the Power of Your Own Awareness \n\nMindfulness practices can help bring about a greater understanding of:\n\n* How cannabis is affecting you\n* What cannabis product is working best\n* How different types of cannabis interact with your individual needs and biochemistry\n\nIn fact, one of the most important and overlooked factors in cannabis use is your own awareness. To get the right effects, you need to know what to ask for. To know what to ask for, you need to know how you feel, both to begin with and after you’ve used cannabis. This requires a lot of self-awareness.\n\nThis is a crucial step in the process of finding the best cannabis strains and methods for you. By harnessing the power of mindful awareness, you can better hone in on the cannabis options that work best, and tackle each step in your cannabis journey with grace and ease.\n\n### Cultivating Your Own Mindful Practice\n \nIf you’d like to cultivate your own mindfulness practice, you can do so in a number of ways. You can:\n\n* [Start a sitting meditation practice](https://www.mindful.org/mindfulness-how-to-do-it/).\n* [Go to a course on mindfulness-based stress reduction](https://www.webmd.com/balance/tc/mindfulness-based-stress-reduction-topic-overview).\n* [Take up a mindful physical practice such as yoga](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/597798584ce06012ff1d1641/cannabis-yoga-and-relaxation-an-interview-with-dee-dussault).\n\nWhat’s key is taking regular opportunities to immerse yourself fully in the sensations of the present moment. \n\nIn the next installment of our Cannabis for Newbies guide, we’ll share some mindfulness exercises that include cannabis. You can use these any time to increase your mindful awareness as well as improve your cannabis experience. \n\nPhoto credit: [Mikita Karasiou](https://unsplash.com/@starpollen)\n\nNeed a doctor’s recommendation?
