It’s a time to [learn more](https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/index.html) about a disease that affects more than 300,000 Americans each year with symptoms including fatigue, rash, and body aches. [National Lyme Disease Month](https://nationaltoday.com/national-lyme-disease-awareness-month/) spotlights Lyme disease causes, prevention, and treatments – but it’s also a time to take a look at the many ways cannabis can help to relieve the discomforts of this common tick-borne condition. \n\n![Hello2-min (47).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_47_a48111b063.png)\n\n### What is Lyme Disease?\nLyme Disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States. It’s caused by either of two bacteria strains, *Borrellia burgdorferi* or *Borrellia mayorii*, which are carried by a species of tick called the black-legged tick or deer tick. Lyme Disease occurs most often in the Northeast, Upper Midwest, and Mid-Atlantic parts of the country, where conditions are damp and grasses grow tall in summer, but it’s been reported in all 50 states, including the dry desert Southwest.\n\nOnly the deer tick carries the bacteria that cause Lyme disease, but not every deer tick bite transmits it. Ticks cling to the skin and burrow into it, and the longer a deer tick remains attached to the body, the greater the risk for Lyme disease. That’s why health professionals recommend carefully checking for ticks after any outdoor activity during tick season.\n\nLyme disease symptoms typically appear between 3 and 30 days after the *Borrellia bacterium* enters the bloodstream, and [they can include](https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/signs_symptoms/index.html):\n\n- Flu-like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, and body aches\n- Headache\n- A distinctive skin rash called erythema migrans, which can appear in various areas of the body\n\n![Hello8-min (8).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello8_min_8_027309e5da.png)\n\nIf Lyme disease is untreated, more serious symptoms can appear, including neck stiffness, facial palsy, and arthritis. The erythema migrans rash can also spread or appear in more locations.\n\nThere are no specific tests for Lyme disease, so it’s usually diagnosed by symptoms, a recent activity that might include exposure to ticks, and general blood tests revealing the presence of certain antibodies. Once diagnosed, Lyme disease is usually treated for two to four weeks course of antibiotics.\n\nFor some people, symptoms can persist for weeks or months after Lyme disease treatment – a condition called [Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome, or [PTLDS](https://www.cdc.gov/lyme/postlds/index.html ). Others may experience Lyme disease symptoms indefinitely, known as [chronic Lyme disease](https://www.niaid.nih.gov/diseases-conditions/chronic-lyme-disease). \n\nCurrently, there’s no proven treatment for PTLDS or chronic Lyme disease since long-term use of antibiotics can lead to some serious complications. But some research suggests that [cannabis can help](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/could-lyme-disease-patients-find-relief-with-medical-marijuana) to relieve the symptoms of Lyme disease and PTLDS without the side effects and risks of pharmaceuticals.\n\n![Hello3-min (37).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_37_70b4240b45.png)\n\n### Cannabis Provides Natural Relief for Lyme Disease Symptoms\nCannabis isn’t a cure for Lyme disease, but it shows promise for relieving its symptoms. A growing body of research reveals that cannabis has considerable anti-inflammatory and analgesic or pain-relieving properties. It’s also a powerful neuroprotectant, capable of supporting neural pathways in the brain and central nervous system. That’s because cannabis in all its forms activates responses in the body’s [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system), a network of cell receptors that respond to cannabis compounds in ways similar to cannabinoid chemicals naturally produced by the tissues. \n\nCannabis compounds such as [THC](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and [CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd) (cannabidiol) can activate pathways in the brain and central nervous system that are related to pain signaling and immune responses, which can help to relieve the discomforts of Lyme disease. According to [LymeDisease.org](https://www.lymedisease.org/), an education and advocacy group for those living with Lyme disease, [these properties](https://www.lymedisease.org/med-marijuana-lyme-kinderlehrer/) make cannabis “very valuable as an adjunct to treatment of tick-borne diseases.”\n\n### Products and Strains for Symptom Relief\nWhether you prefer to smoke, vape, or consume your cannabis another way, there’s a cannabis product that can help to relieve the symptoms of Lyme disease, such as [pain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-best-cannabis-strains-for-chronic-pain) and inflammation. Female cannabis plants are prized for their [abundant, psychoactive flower](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-to-buy-flower), and feminized seeds produce potent, high-yield cannabis crops. Male plants are often simply thrown away. But the male marijuana plant [has plenty to offer](https://infinitecal.com/2020/01/15/male-vs-female-cannabis-why-its-important-to-know-before-you-grow/) in its own right – and it plays a vital if often overlooked, role in breeding the many [cannabis strains](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-indica-sativa-and-hybrid-explained) available today.\n\n![Hello6-min (17).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_17_3c35ad9930.png)\n\n### What’s the Problem with Males?\nCannabis cultivators want to get the highest return on their investment of resources and time, and [male plants can interfere](https://leafwell.com/blog/the-importance-of-male-cannabis-plants/) with those goals. They take up space and consume water and nutrients without contributing to the harvest, and they can pollinate any female plants in the vicinity, which can derail breeding programs.\n\nLikewise, it’s widely thought that male plants don’t contain significant amounts of highly desirable compounds like [THC](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) and [CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd), so they can’t make much of a contribution to commercial cannabis cultivation. There’s some truth to all of these things, but the [benefits of keeping male plants](https://sensiseeds.com/en/blog/male-cannabis-plants-7-things-to-do-with-males/) can considerably outweigh these negatives. \n\n![Hello1-min (45).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_45_9060570d5a.png)\n\n### Male Plants Keep the Gene Pool Strong\nCannabis Sativa is one of a handful of plant species that are dioecious or have distinct male and female features. Many other plants have both male and female characteristics in the same plant so that they can self-pollinate. Cannabis plants can self-pollinate, too, in a process called feminization. That forces plants to keep the characteristics of a specific female plant through successive generations. But it also eliminates input from the male side of the genetic equation. Over time the lack of new genetic material causes a weakened, inbred gene pool that leaves plants more vulnerable to pests, chemicals, and other environmental threats.\n\nMale plants add variety and vigor to any cannabis strain. Their genetic contribution offers many more characteristics to select for, such as growth rate, hardiness, and the presence and amount of various [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabinoids-chemical-compounds-with-huge-therapeutic-potential) and terpenes. Mixing and matching those features leads to the astonishing variety of cannabis strains available today.\n\n![Hello4-min (34).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_34_60f574be1a.png)\n\n### Males Can Drive Away Pests\nEven if they aren’t used to pollinate females, male cannabis plants make good “companion” plants for their own and even other plant species. Like their female counterparts, male cannabis plants produce [terpenes](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-are-terpenes-and-what-is-their-effect) that are responsible for the [unique scents and flavors](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-makes-each-marijuana-strain-unique) of each cannabis strain. Some terpenes, such as limonene and pinene, have strong scents that can repel insects both above and below ground, such as weevils and nematodes. In that way, male cannabis plants can help to protect surrounding plants of all kinds, even crops like cotton, from damage or contamination. \n\n![Hello7-min (9).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello7_min_9_86c0ead9ad.png)\n\n### Male Plants Enable Seed Production\nAlthough cannabis cultivators prefer their female plants to direct all their energy toward producing flowers, not seeds, those seeds are essential to keeping the various strains alive and moving forward. And the pollen from male plants is needed to produce those seeds, which can be used to plant another crop or sold to amateur and professional growers anywhere in the world. \n\n![Hello5-min (25).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_25_a7bea4d1b2.png)\n\n### Males Also Contain Cannabinoids\nIn female plants, [cannabinoids like THC and CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-10-cannabinoids-in-cannabis-you-should-know) are concentrated in the flower, but in male plants, they’re concentrated in the leaves. Although female flower contains higher amounts of cannabinoids, that doesn’t mean males are lacking in potency. They contribute half the genetic material for any offspring, so their cannabinoid profile can play a major part in developing the profile of a new strain. For example, crossing a male plant that’s high in CBD with a female that also contains high CBD would create plants with a reliably high concentration of CBD.\n\n![Hello8-min (7).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello8_min_7_4574290b2a.png)\n\n### How To Identify a Male Plant\nIn the earliest stages of growth, it’s impossible to distinguish between male and female cannabis plants. But once they’re past the vegetative stage – the period between germination and flowering – you can begin to look for “pre-flowers” on your plants. These early signs of a male plant appear at the nodes, or joints, of maturing plants, especially near the top of the plant. Male plants have small sacs, while female plants have hairs or pistils in the same place. Male plants also typically have fewer leaves and thicker stalks than females.\n\nFemale cannabis plants are valued for their potent flower and rich cannabinoid and terpene content, but those things wouldn’t be possible without male plants. Truth is stranger than fiction – it turns out that cannabis consumers weigh less on average than non-consumers. Marijuana contains various [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabinoids-chemical-compounds-with-huge-therapeutic-potential), including **THC** and **CBD**, which can work in different ways as fat busters. It also includes [tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV)](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/psychoactive-thcv-the-cannabinoid-that-kills-your-appetite), a cannabinoid that can help disrupt unhelpful eating habits.\n \nIn this article, I review [Wana Brands'](https://www.wanabrands.com/) new cannabis product, the [Wana Optimals Fit gummy]( https://www.wanabrands.com/products/gummies/optimals/optimals-fit-rec), which contains the magical cannabinoid THCV. [Marijuana helps our body better regulate digestion](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-help-you-lose-weight), appetite, and hormones by interacting with our [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system )(ECS). New studies also show that CBD and THCV can [reduce appetite](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19378378/) and increase metabolism, making them [potential treatments for obesity](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6163475/) and other related conditions. \n \nTHCV can reduce appetite, but it is also known to relieve stress, increase energy, and focus. These effects can help disrupt unhealthy eating habits and lifestyle choices. THCV is found in some [Sativa strains](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/indica-and-sativa-do-these-cannabis-labels-mean-anything) like [Durban Poison](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/durban-poison#:~:text=Durban%20Poison%20is%20an%20all,task%20of%20cleaning%20your%20house.), but it is still rare to see it in cannabis products on the dispensary shelves. Wana is one of the first brands to include THCV in a cannabis product: **Wana Optimals Fit Gummies**.\n\n![Hello2-min (21).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_21_bbf30d514d.png)\n \n### The Most Popular Marijuana Gummies\n \nWeed gummies are many patients' favorite way to consume cannabis. And [Wana brand gummies](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-perfect-weed-edible-is-the-cannabis-gummy-by-wana-brands) are a popular choice. Their classic THC gummies are available in many legal states, including Arizona, Colorado, California, Illinois, Florida, Michigan, and many more. The THCV-infused Wana Optimals Gummies are, however, only currently available in Wana's home state of *Colorado*; the company has plans to expand their availability soon. The women-owned brand began as a start-up in Boulder, and the team's devotion to continuously improving and innovating their gummy recipes has led them to success.\n \nWana offers two different \"Optimals\" gummies, the [Wana Fit and the Wana Fast Asleep]( https://www.wanabrands.com/collections/gummies/optimals/). Both are vegan, melt-proof, precisely dosed, and available in various flavors with ratios of THC to CBD, along with other cannabinoids and [terpenes](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-are-cannabis-terpenes-and-how-do-they-work). \n \nThey are differentiated by the use of [nanotechnology](https://mashable.com/article/nanotech-weed-explainer) to create [fast-acting effects](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/rapid-delivery-cannabis-edibles-hit-the-market). Unlike most edibles on the market, the effects of the Optimals gummies are felt within **five to fifteen minutes**\n\n![Hello1-min (36).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_36_122b1e4e4c.png)\n \n### Review: Wana Optimals Fit THCV Gummies\n \nThe [Wana Optimals Fit gummies](https://www.wanabrands.com/products/gummies/optimals/optimals-fit-rec) have a mix of cannabinoids: 0.5mg THCV, 10mg CBD, and 0.1mg THC. The effects are non-intoxicating but noticeable in a good way. A few minutes after eating the gummy, I felt uplifted but at the same time relaxed. I remained clear-headed throughout the day and felt slightly more focused than usual. I went about my day, attended my online exercise class, and got busy finishing projects for work that I'd delayed for the past month and a half.\n \n[CBD has an overall calming effect](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/understanding-how-cbd-can-calm-your-anxiety), so I never felt jittery or anxious as I do on higher amounts of THC. Instead, I felt serene and happy. The bonus - when I usually would be snacking around 4 pm, I wasn't even thinking about food! After a productive and healthy day, I skipped my usual nightly Netflix and sugar-laden post-dinner binge-eating and opted for hot tea and a book instead.\n \nI've always enjoyed cannabis gummies as they are convenient and accurately dosed. The Wana Optimals Fit gummies are a tasty fruit punch flavor, and unlike other gummies I've tried, they don't taste like weed. Plus, they're low in sugar and gluten-free.\n \nThe Wana Optimals Fit gummy improved my day, making me feel calm and clear-headed. Given that I ate less on the day I took the Wana Optimals Fit gummy, I can see how adding these gummies into my daily routine could help me change some of my eating habits over the long term. My review is two thumbs up for Wana Fit. I'd recommend these gummies to anyone looking for a new tool to change daily habits and form new, healthier ones. \n \n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n \nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). I've never been a great sleeper. I've tried various sleep aids, from melatonin to Ambien to boiling lettuce and drinking the leftover water. Yes, apparently, this makes some people tired. \n\nNot getting enough rest negatively impacts our well-being, and it's hard to go through life constantly tired. According to the [Cleveland Clinic](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/12119-insomnia#:~:text=People%20with%20insomnia%20can't,changes%20can%20improve%20your%20rest.), lack of sleep can lead to health problems like **diabetes**, **hypertension**, and even **weight gain**. My journey with sleepless nights caused me to be moody and less productive during the day. This is no fun, and I realize I am not alone in this journey.\n\nOne natural solution has worked for me, though - **medical marijuana**. It [helps me get to sleep](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/dreaming-of-better-sleep-cannabis-may-help) without my normal tossing and turning, and it also helps me stay asleep!\n\n![Hello9-min (2).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello9_min_2_23a3f2a18e.png)\n\n### How Weed Helps With Sleep\n\nThere are various [terpenes](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-are-cannabis-terpenes-and-how-do-they-work) and [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabinoids-chemical-compounds-with-huge-therapeutic-potential) found within the cannabis plant. Each of them has varying functions which interact with our [endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system#:~:text=The%20endocannabinoid%20system%20regulates%20autophagy,keep%20the%20whole%20body%20healthy.) \n\nBelow is a list of cannabinoids found to help people et a better night’s rest.\n\nI did a considerable amount of research on weed as a sleep aid and found a hefty amount of science to back it up. According to a 2008 study, consuming higher levels of [Tetrahydrocannabinol\n(THC)](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-thc-vs-cbd) typically reduces the amount of REM sleep, which means you'll spend less time in \"deep sleep.\" Another study found that [THC helps to reduce the time it takes to fall asleep](http://files7.webydo.com/92/9209805/UploadedFiles/5E9EC245-448E-17B2-C7CA-21C6BDC6852D.pdf). It’s advised to [consume smaller quantities of THC.](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28349316/); more significant amounts of THC may keep you awake.\n\nOne of the other most common cannabinoids is [cannabidiol (CBD)](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-cbd-and-how-can-it-help-me) which has been shown to [affect serotonin levels in the brain](https://archives.drugabuse.gov/testimonies/2015/biology-potential-therapeutic-effects-cannabidiol), helping reduce anxiety and calm the mind. In one study, CBD promotes sleep and [increased sleep scores in 67% of adults within one month](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30624194/). CBD is also thought to [help with the release of cortisol](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6326553/pdf/18-041.pdf), which acts as a sedative in consumers. \n\n![Hello4-min (23).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_23_489cb45ba1.png)\n\nAnother lesser-known cannabinoid is [cannabinol (CBN)](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-cbn-cannabinoid-affects-your-health), which reduced stress and anxiety in some studies. It is also thought that CBN enhances the impact of THC and CBD. This cannabinoid is created through the oxidation and decomposition of THC. When THC is heated and exposed to Co2 (oxygen), it will convert to CBN over time.\n\nLastly, [Cannabigerol (CBG)](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/beyond-thc-and-cbd-what-you-need-to-know-about-cbc-cbn-and-cbg) has been touted as a powerful pain reliever, which can help some people get to sleep and stay asleep. Research on CBG is limited but shows it may also reduce inflammation and nausea and work to slow the proliferation of cancer cells.\n\n### What Cannabis Products Are Best for Sleep?\n\nWith so many weed products today, it's hard to know which cannabis product to choose. In my recent experimentation, I found that some work far better than others. This review covers my experience with the [Wana Optimals Fast Asleep gummies](https://www.wanabrands.com/collections/shop-all/). \n\n![Hello1-min (9).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_9_c6fbd4012b.png)\n\n### Review: Wana Optimals Fast Asleep Gummies\n\nI won't lie; I'm often skeptical about [marijuana edibles](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/consuming-cannabis-edibles-to-improve-your-health) and how they might affect me. I've had some bad experiences of feeling too high for too long. But these edibles are in lower doses and help me fall asleep and stay asleep longer. \n\nSo I purchased a pack of the [Fast Asleep gummies](https://www.wanabrands.com/products/gummies/optimals/optimals-fast-asleep-rec) from a dispensary in Denver. I was instantly intrigued by the packaging. It reads, \"*feel sleepy in 5-15 minutes*.\" What's not to love there?\n\nThe package of 10 edible gummies cost me $25. Each gummy contains a total of:\n \n- 10mg CBD\n- 2mg CBN\n- 2mg CBG \n- 2mg THC \n- 1mg melatonin\n\nOther ingredients include 30+ sleep-inducing terpenes, the chemical compounds that give cannabis its unique smell, taste, and effects. Some terpenes do a great job calming the mind and the body, reducing stress, inducing relaxation, and encouraging restful sleep.\n\nAbout 30 minutes before bed, I popped my first Wana gummy, which tasted great. It's like chewing on a berry covered in sugar. Plus, they're gluten-free and sweetened naturally.\n\nI must have been awake for seven minutes after eating the Fast Asleep gummy before I was fast asleep. This series aims to educate and inform on the various aspects of cannabis, from alternative ways to consume medical marijuana to a deeper understanding of recreational cannabis. Follow along to learn the ins, outs, and how to's of cannabis!***\n\nIn the past few years [dabbing](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/is-dabbing-good-for-you) has [exploded in popularity](https://www.livescience.com/51202-marijuana-dabbing-trend.html) as a new favorite way to consume cannabis. The [intense effects of dabs](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/smoking-dabs-is-it-bad-for-you) provide quick relief for cannabis patients in [severe pain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/dabbing-marijuana-for-good-health). Dabs are also renowned for being too strong for many cannabis consumers, so proceed with caution. If you have marijuana flower, you can make a dab at home. This article will guide you through the safest way to make a dab.\n\n![Hello4-min (21).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_21_df1680267f.png)\n\n### What is a Dab?\n\nA dab is a form of [concentrated cannabis](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/understanding-cannabis-concentrates-and-how-to-use-them) that can be inhaled from a dab rig or electronic vaporizer, sometimes called an **e-rig**. Dabs are [made by extracting the **cannabinoids**](https://nida.nih.gov/publications/drugfacts/cannabis-marijuana-concentrates) and **terpenes** from cannabis flower. There are various ways to make dabs, and they come in different textures like wax, hash, shatter, and oil. Some methods of extraction use solvents like ethanol or butane, which [leave behind toxic residue](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26558460/). The most straightforward and solvent-free approach to making dabs at home is by applying heat and pressure to cannabis flower to create [rosin](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/rosin-a-solvent-free-concentrate).\n\n![Hello5-min (17).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_17_d9ec73ac59.png)\n\n### Benefits of Dabbing\n\nThe [main appeal of dabbing](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/inhaling-cannabis-a-guide-to-smoking-vaping-and-dabbing) is that it provides a stronger, faster high. The potent effects are especially beneficial for those suffering from chronic pain and serious illnesses. Dabbing might be less harmful to the lungs than smoking weed, especially if you use a [vaporizer](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/beginners-guide-finding-the-right-marijuana-vaporizer) that allows you to control the temperature. And the vapor is more discreet and odorless than smoke.\n\n![Hello2-min (23).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_23_ca1211ed9a.png)\n\n### How to Make a Dab\n\nYou can make a rosin dab at home using some basic supplies. The quality of your at-home dab will depend on the quality of your flower. [When you buy cannabis flower](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-to-buy-flower) at a dispensary, make sure it’s tested free of pesticides, and choose organic when it’s available.\n\n**What you need:**\n\n- Flat iron\n- Parchment paper\n- Cannabis flower\n- Dab tool or safety pin\n- Dab rig or concentrate vaporizer\n\n**Instructions**:\n\n- 1.) Fold a square of parchment paper in half.\n- 2.) Put a 1/2 gram bud inside folded parchment paper.\n- 3.) Preheat the flat iron to 275 degrees Fahrenheit.\n- 4.) Place the folded parchment paper onto the flat iron plate.\n- 5.) Press and hold the flat iron closed tight for 5 - 10 seconds.\n- 6.) Release the flat iron and open it to see dabs of fresh-pressed rosin stuck to the parchment paper. \n- 7.) Use the dab tool to remove dabs of concentrate.\n- 8.) Heat dab rig or vaporizer.\n- 9.) Place a dab on the hot nail and inhale vapor through the mouthpiece. \n- 10.) That cannabis bud can be reheated to make more rosin dabs.\n\nAs always recommended, start low and go slow for safe and happy dabbing!\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt’s easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). Consumers, or at least dispensary owners who select the weed products on their shelves, believe that the more potent, the better.\n\nHigher levels of THC have proven to be big business for dispensaries. When THC levels test higher than 25%, dispensaries can [charge $75 or more for an eighth](https://www.forbes.com/sites/chrisroberts/2020/06/16/science-reveals-the-cannabis-industrys-greatest-lie-youre-buying-weed-wrong-and-so-is-everyone-else/?sh=64524f8c2ee3) of weed. So it's no surprise that the weed business has consumers believing that more THC is better and relates to a higher quality product.\n\nThe problem is, it isn't true. \n\n![Hello5-min (14).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_14_6fec9680e8.png)\n\n### Why Low THC Flower is Better\n\nIn reality, the THC percentage has nothing to do with marijuana quality and, according to [a study from The University of Colorado](https://www.colorado.edu/today/2020/06/10/marijuana-concentrates-sharply-spike-thc-levels-dont-necessarily-get-users-higher), it doesn't even get you higher as the percentage exponentially increases.\n\nOur body's [cannabinoid receptors](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/beyond-the-cb1-and-cb2-cannabis-receptors-trpv1-and-gpr55) become saturated at higher THC levels, beyond which there is a diminishing effect of additional THC. So, once you get above 17-20 percent in THC content, you're not getting more high. But, even that may be too much THC; the old adage, less is more, holds true.\n\n![Hello1-min (19).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_19_52ddeee89d.png)\n\n### The Biphasic Effect of Marijuana\n\nThe biphasic effect is when a lower dosage of something creates a desired outcome, while a higher dose may produce adverse effects. Think of when you drink a glass or two of wine; you may become more social and relaxed. If you drink the entire bottle, you may become tired, aggressive, or even blackout. \n\nCannabis produces a biphasic effect within our bodies. Lower doses may create a pleasurable effect for many people, and **higher doses** may induce **paranoia**, **anxiety**, or even a **panic attack**. Lower doses also may be more beneficial in treating medical conditions. [Dr. Justin Sulak](https://healer.com/cannabis-dosing-less-is-usually-more/), a well-known cannabis physician, treats 90 percent of his patients with lower dosages.\n\nHe says, \"When I started my practice, I was surprised to see that some patients were using very low dosages (e.g. 1 puff), while other patients require much higher dosages (e.g. an entire large joint or a potent edible) to achieve optimal benefits. Over time, I noticed that most patients using small amounts of cannabis were getting better and more sustainable results than their high-dosage counterparts with similar conditions.\"\n\nBeyond whether low THC is more efficacious than higher THC, most of today's cannabis consumers aren't looking to get super high; they're looking for a strain they can enjoy that won't knock them out. And when we look at cannabis consumers that are about to enter the market, the same can be said. The vast majority of cannabis consumers want or need moderate levels of THC.\n\n![Hello6-min (8).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_8_fe2e21717c.png)\n\nSince entering the cannabis industry in 2014, I've been an advocate of **[microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-a-better-way-to-take-cannabis)**. I was extremely fortunate to receive excellent medical advice over a decade ago and found that **microdosing** cannabis stopped my [chronic migraines](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-cannabis-stopped-my-chronic-pain). \n\nThis transformative life event led me to start the cannabis [Telehealth company HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started). Over the last ten years, I've [hosted educational events on the topic](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-to-microdose-with-cannabis-a-hellomd-event) and [written numerous articles about microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-a-better-way-to-take-cannabis) in hopes of mainstreaming the concept.\n\nIn the last couple of years, numerous brands have created [microdosed cannabis products](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-kiva-confections-petra-mint-review) for consumers desiring lower-dose THC. This is especially true within the [edibles category](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-kiva-confections-petra-mint-review), where there is a good selection of microdosed products. Yet, there has been little movement toward a lower percentage of THC when it comes to low-dose cannabis flower. \n\nThe rare exception is the new California cannabis brand called [Country](https://www.countryranch.com/). Dubbed the \"Bud Lite of cannabis,\" Country is one of the only, if not the first, cannabis brand to deliver low-dose cannabis strains successfully.\n\n![Hello9-min (3).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello9_min_3_6fd5535e72.png)\n\n### Country Revolutionizes Cannabis\n\nCountry was created by **Jamie Feaster**, one of the original founders of the **cannabis delivery app Eaze**. Jamie started Country because he saw an enormous gap in the market when it came to low-dose flower. He also has an eye toward the new cannabis consumer who may want to smoke a marijuana strain that would allow them to remain functional. His vision was to create a low-dose, premium cannabis flower to go hand in hand with a hard-working lifestyle. Hence Country's claim of weed that \"can help you accomplish an honest day's work with a smile.\" \n\nFinally, a cannabis brand that understands that many consumers like to smoke weed and get stuff done!\n\n![Hello8-min (4).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello8_min_4_d16d5458a8.png)\n\n### My Experience Trying Country Ranch's Good Neighbor Joints\n\nI purchased a six-pack of [Country Ranch's Good Neighbor joints](https://www.countryranch.com/pages/goodneighbor) for $40 from a nearby dispensary. When I tell you their packaging is next-level, I mean it. The joints come in a vacuum-sealed jar with a built-in pump that allows you to reseal the jar every time you close the lid. Brilliant! \n\nAlso, if you look at the back of any Country package you'll see a welcoming message from Jamie, the Founder, and his phone number. If you ring or text him, he actually responds! I sent him a picture of my bunny next to his Country package of Neighbor joints and he texted me back with a friendly note back.\n\nWhen I first opened the Country package, it made a \"tsssss\" sound, leading me to believe that these joints would taste incredibly fresh. I had a busy day ahead of me and usually microdose THC, so I sparked one of the joints and smoked while I began answering my emails. \n\nAfter the first couple of puffs, I had to stop and hold the joint between my fingers to get another look at it. This flower tasted, unlike anything I'd had before. There were notes of citrus, pine, and even fruit. I could taste the terpenes in all their glory. This Good Neighbor blend features the strains [Jack Herer](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/jack-herer) and [AC/DC](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/acdc). But this joint only contains 11% THC and has 9% CBD – creating a perfect blend between the two.\n\nWhile I smoked, I hummed to the music playing and noticed that I remained clear-headed and even became a little more focused. I buzzed through my morning emails, drank my morning coffee, and felt great. In fact, I felt motivated to take on my day. \n\nAfter my experience with Country Ranch's Good Neighbor joint, I'm a big fan. This is certainly one of my new favorite brands of 2022. The earliest known mention of its use dates back almost 5,000 years to China, where it appears in the pharmacopeia of [Emperor Shen Nung](https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shennong), the father of Chinese medicine. Nowadays, the use of cannabis in the United States is legal for *recreational* purposes in 18 states and for **medicinal** purposes in 37 states. \n\n![Hello3-min (12).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_12_ca4650ebbe.png)\n\n### What Is Cannabis?\n\n[Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/indica-or-sativa-making-the-right-choice) are two strains of the same plant, containing more than 500 chemical compounds known as [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabinoids-chemical-compounds-with-huge-therapeutic-potential). Out of these cannabinoids, two stand out: [THC or tetrahydrocannabinol](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc), which is responsible for the psychedelic effects that arise when cannabis is consumed, and [CBD or cannabidiol](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd), known for its anti-inflammatory properties.\n\nBecause of the importance of these two substances, most cannabis products such as full-spectrum cannabis oil, CBD or THC oils, and even edibles list the amounts of THC and CBD that they contain.\n\n![Hello1-min (19).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_19_7ffdcd5854.png)\n\n### What Are the Effects of Cannabis?\n\nWhen a person smokes marijuana or weed, their lungs absorb THC and circulate it to many organs, including the brain. The effects are felt almost instantly and last for up to three hours. When ingested through an edible, it takes from 30 minutes to two hours to take effect. However, because the digestive system sends nutrients throughout the entire body, the psychedelic high lasts longer, typically between four to six hours.\n\nThe high from psychoactive THC often creates feelings of euphoria and relaxation, releases stress, and promotes creativity — yet in certain instances, it may cause anxiety and paranoia. The psychedelic symptoms are caused by the THC alone, which connects to a certain kind of neuron receptors called **cannabinoid receptors**. This is also known as the [endocannabinoid system or ECS](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system).\n\nReceptors are found in large areas of the brain associated with pleasure, memory, perception, movement, and many others. The CBD’s neuro anti-inflammatory properties mildly balance the intensity of THC effects.\n\n![Hello7-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello7_min_8fb7bf1124.png)\n\n### What Are the Therapeutic Benefits of Cannabis?\n\nInitially, the first therapeutic effects of cannabis were through to be, at best, adjuncts to other treatments. For example, as the brain “lights up” with the effects of THC, it begins to demand more energy which stimulates appetite. This is useful for people suffering from more severe conditions, like cancer or HIV, that may cause a low appetite. THC is also known to help with sleep, anxiety, chronic pain, and more.\n\nIn 2012, studies showed that CBD alleviates schizophrenia symptoms in patients, with results that are actually comparable to conventional antipsychotic drugs. Additionally, in 2017, CBD was shown to reduce epileptic seizures in children in a placebo-controlled trial. Today, it is used with very good prospects in treating chronic pain and cancer. Aside from the physical benefits, cannabis is also used to combat certain mental health problems.\n\n![Hello1-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_2e272d159c.png)\n\n### Are There Any Risks Associated with Cannabis?\n\nThe short answer to the question “Does marijuana cause addiction?” is “Yes.\" About 9% of the population will be 'addicted' to cannabis, but more often, this is called [cannabis use disorder](https://www.hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/is-cannabis-addictive). It is important to note that if a person starts using before the age of 18, they are 4-7 times as likely to develop a dependence. Although, more often than not, weed is benign, it is also known for its damaging effects on memory when consumed for longer periods and accelerating the onset of disease for people predisposed to schizophrenia.\n\n![Hello1-min (39).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_39_17a05b3ea9.png)\n\n### Is Cannabis Legal?\n\nIt depends on where you are. Many countries have already legalized medical marijuana, and a growing number have legalized it for recreational purposes. But in countries like the United States, where state and federal laws differ, the discrepancy causes confusion. Under federal law, marijuana is a [Schedule I substance](https://bit.ly/3LmLZXL), illegal to grow, buy, sell or even carry.\n\nThe battle against marijuana started in 1970 with Nixon's Controlled Substances Act, which later became known as The War on Drugs. It took fifty years for mainstream society to acknowledge the benefits of medical marijuana. Recreational cannabis is still illegal in many of the states within the US, and cannabis, for the most part, is still illegal in the vast majority of countries worldwide.\n\n![Hello2-min (37).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_37_9f063d45a3.png)\n\n### Where Can I Legally Seek Cannabis Treatment? \n\nAsk a [cannabis doctor](https://www.hellomd.com/) whether using medical marijuana as an adjunct treatment or primary treatment is suitable for you. This is relatively easy with Telehealth services in the US like [HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/).\n\nIf the doctor thinks that you will benefit from using medical marijuana, they will issue you a medical marijuana recommendation. Depending on the state, they may also connect you to a dispensary where the medication will be available for purchase. In some states, it is mandated that a pharmacist be on site.\n\nIf you wish to use cannabis for psycho-therapeutic purposes, a visit to the psychiatrist will surely help you find out whether or not medical marijuana is recommended for you.\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). The survey results showed men and women reporting that cannabis had helped [enhance their sex\nlives](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-use-has-different-sexual-health-effects-for-men-and-women) and increase their sexual desire. What's more, this study isn't the only\none of its kind. In fact, a [2012 survey](http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02791072.1982.10471911?journalCode=ujpd20) conducted by the **University of Kansas Medical School** also revealed that marijuana enhanced sexual desire and performance in respondents.\n\nWhile doctors aren't sure exactly how cannabis manages to do this, they do know that it [promotes the release of oxytocin](http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/07/050720065810.htm),\nthe \"bonding hormone\" that makes us feel closer to our sexual partners. Because of this, marijuana has often been classified as a sexual stimulant, and consumers have been taking advantage of it for years to help them perform better in the bedroom and enjoy sex more.\n\n![Untitled65-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled65_min_5236385225.png)\n\n### Traditional Medicine and Cannabis\n\nDespite what two broad-reaching surveys have found, traditional medical literature doesn't always back these claims up. In the past, studies have found that cannabis can [harm sexual\nfunction](http://www.healthline.com/health/erectile-dysfunction/is-smoking-weed-good-or-bad-for-ed), even going so far as to [cause erectile dysfunction](http://blog.sfgate.com/smellthetruth/2015/10/06/weed-dick-marijuana-may-cause-erectile-dysfunction-study-shows/) (ED) or deplete testosterone levels in men. Even modern-day doctors like\n[Rany Shamloul](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ptr.5074), Ph.D., have conducted more recent [studies and reviews](http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/02/110222122212.htm) that claim to prove a positive link between the use of marijuana and the occurrence of ED.\n\nWhile the medical evidence may seem convincing, cannabis doctors are urging consumers to avoid jumping to conclusions about the proof these studies offer that cannabis harms sexual function. These doctors state that traditional studies that look at male sexual performance and cannabis are poorly structured and in need of a more updated approach. Unfortunately, these doctors also acknowledge that it [may take quite some time](http://www.mensjournal.com/health-fitness/health/can-marijuana-save-your-sex-life-20160229) before American universities and other medical establishments begin researching sex and cannabis in earnest.\n\n![Untitled64-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled64_min_932fdca536.png)\n\n### The Future of Cannabis and Sexuality\n\nWhile traditional medicine may be lagging behind on this issue, doctors like HelloMD's own Chief Medical Officer, [Perry Solomon](https://www.linkedin.com/in/perry-solomon-md-2b27a65/), M.D., are forging ahead and prescribing cannabis to men struggling with ED, decreased libido or difficulty achieving orgasm. In the words of Dr. Solomon, \"*The way I see it, why not try cannabis? There are side effects to Viagra and zero side effects to cannabis when dosed properly*.\"\n\nWhile cannabis may be helpful in the bedroom in small doses, Solomon advocates being careful about how much consumers use. Too much marijuana can leave men feeling classically \"stoned\" and rob them of their desire to have sex at all. To avoid this, Solomon advocates that consumers use a [vape pen](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/everything-you-need-to-know-about-disposable-vape-pens) about five minutes before sex in order to time the effects of the marijuana with sexual activity. Additionally, Solomon recommends using a strain of marijuana that contains [less than 14 percent THC](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/high-cbd-marijuana-strains) and ensuring that male users consume marijuana slowly, to avoid taking too much.\n\nInterestingly, female marijuana consumers don't need to be as careful about dose as their male counterparts. A dab rig is used to do this. \n\nLet's break down the basics of dabbing; by the end, you'll know everything necessary to start dabbing cannabis extracts. \n\n![Untitled32.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled32_da00c157aa.png)\n\n### What is Dabbing?\n\nDabbing extracts is the flash vaporization of cannabis extracts such as [crumble, shatter, wax and budder](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-cannabis-wax-shatter-and-oil) – essentially a highly concentrated dose of cannabis created with a solvent. \n\nYou can also dab concentrates such as hash and resin. \n\nTo dab, you will need a \"dab rig\" which consists of a water pipe, nail, dome, and dabber. \n\n![Untitled31.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled31_742f38b9bd.png)\n\n### What You Need to Dab Cannabis Extracts\n\nA few more tools are required to properly dab cannabis extracts compared to other consumption methods like edibles or smoking. \n\nSupplies you'll need to dab extracts properly:\n\n- Dab rig with a nail \n- Dome – this will fit over the nail and capture the vapor of the cannabis extract\n- Blowtorch \n- Dabber \n- Cannabis extract \n\nYou can pick up these \"dabbing essentials\" at any dispensary or head shop. \n\nThe steps to take a dab are simple:\n\n- 1.) Fill the water pipe with water\n- 2.) Heat the nail to a high temperature – you don't want it to be too hot or it will feel harsh on your lungs \n- 3.) Place the desired amount of cannabis concentrate on your dabber\n- 4.) Swirl the concentrate on the end of the dabber into the heated nail \n- 5.) Place the dome on top of the nail\n- 6.) Inhale the vapor\n- 7.) Repeat as desired!\n\nWhile there are other types of dabbing methods such as domeless rigs or e-nails – the torch and nail method is the simplest and most common option. \n\n![Untitled33.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled33_128fc900fa.png)\n\n### What are the Benefits of Dabbing Cannabis Extracts?\n\nDabbing extracts is especially popular for a few main reasons: \n\nWeed extracts usually contain very high levels of THC (and sometimes CBD), which means you can reach your desired \"highness\" in a shorter period while using less cannabis product. \n\nDabbing cannabis extracts releases vapor instead of smoke which means [it's better for your lungs](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/dabbing-marijuana-for-good-health). This method is considered smoke-free for this reason. \n\nBecause dabbing is smoke-free, it releases very little odor for those seeking a more discreet consumption method. \n\nEssentially, you can consume much higher amounts of THC and CBD in a shorter period with a fraction of the product and without risking damage to your lungs – it's easy to see why dabbing extracts is so popular!\n\n![Untitled34.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled34_3948427598.png)\n\n### Tips for Dabbing Marijuana Extracts\n\nWhile dabbing can be fun, it can also be dangerous. Make sure to keep these tips in mind at all times when dabbing marijuana extracts:\n\n- Use caution when handling your blow torch and heated nail.\n- Start with a very small amount of extract – ideally no larger than a lentil. \n- Do not overheat your nail – this can lead to unpleasantly hot dabs.\n- Consider purchasing cannabis extracts with equal parts CBD and THC to avoid the risk overconsumption. \n- Avoid using low-grade titanium for your dabber or nail – which is unsafe to inhale. \n- Also avoid using stainless steel dabbers or nails – stainless steel releases dangerous chromium fumes when heated. \n\nAs long as you stay safe and avoid overindulging or purchasing the wrong tools, dabbing extracts is one of the best ways to consume weed. \n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). ","slug":"what-is-california-sober","content":"Welcome to the new era of ['California Sober'](https://www.vice.com/en/article/a3xvga/california-sober-quitting-drugs-alcohol-weed), and it's not entirely sober, but it's gaining in popularity with the younger generation. I'll give you a hint - Gen Z and Millennials are trading alcoholic cocktails and cocaine for mocktails, canna-beverages, and consciousness-expanding psychedelics.\n\nSome people claim that this is the new 'healthy' lifestyle that includes mood-altering substances but without the dire health consequences of alcohol. \n\nSo what exactly is **California sober**, and where did this all begin? \n\nLet's break it down and discuss why this movement isn't just a trend but the future of cannabis consumption and modern 'sobriety' in America. \n\n![California sober is popular with Gen Z and Millenials](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_03_18_at_4_02_23_PM_ed8a66fc67.png)\n\n### What is 'California Sober'?\n\nThe term California sober is much more ambiguous than any official medical term related to sobriety. Generally, being Cali sober means, you are giving up all drugs and alcohol and instead only using cannabis, and possibly psychedelics, in moderation. A California sober person will avoid harder drugs, [like opioids](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-science-behind-why-marijuana-is-safer-than-opioids) and [alcohol](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-be-a-healthier-substitute-for-alcohol). \n\nSome Cali sober people may choose to use additional mind-altering substances such as LSD, while others will only consume marijuana. But the fact is, being California sober means something different to everyone involved. \n\nWhile celebrities and everyday folk are moving toward a California sober way of life, there are some important distinctions to keep in mind before following suit. \n\n- California sober is not a recommended alternative for those with drug and alcohol addictions. \n- Some people may exclusively use cannabis, while others may include psychedelics. \n- Being California Sober doesn't necessarily mean you're quitting drinking forever. It can just mean a cutback in regular consumption. \n\nRegardless of your end goal, making a move to California sober has proved to have a positive impact on the lives of many. The term has now been identified as an aspirational lifestyle and is increasingly popular.\n\n![CANN is a cannabis beverage](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_03_18_at_4_01_06_PM_ec4bb05155.png)\n\n### Why Cannabis Use is Growing\n\nCannabis is losing its stigma and is quickly becoming mainstream. As new products and research are available, new consumers are flocking to marijuana and throwing away the stoner stereotype.\n\nThe reality is that cannabis can help with [many health conditions](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-marijuana-help-with-chronic-pain-anxiety-and-insomnia), but it's proving especially useful for those seeking an elevated mindset without the hangover, liver damage, or possibility of overdose. Cannabis beverages by companies like [CANN](https://www.drinkcann.com/) are giving consumers new low-dose alternatives for drinking **THC** and **CBD**, and people are loving it.\n\nNowadays, you can curate strains and products to fit your unique, specified needs. You can [look at the massive increase in cannabis beverage sales](https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2022/01/14/2367143/0/en/Global-Cannabis-Beverages-Market-to-Reach-US-2-Billion-by-the-Year-2026.html) over the past years and see demand is rapidly growing for alcohol alternatives. \n\nWith new studies related to **endocannabinoids**, trichomes, [terpenes](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-are-cannabis-terpenes-and-how-do-they-work), and more — we're unlocking a new world of diversity for modern cannabis consumers. \n\nSo not only is it easier to access cannabis, it's easier (and more exciting) to intertwine it into your daily life. You can seamlessly ditch the alcohol and switch to cannabis without anyone noticing — or caring!\n\n![Hello1-min (32).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_32_02de075651.png)\n\n### COVID Increased Alcohol Consumption\n\nThe pandemic rocked our daily lives, causing us to stay locked indoors for extended periods of time. It also boosted alcohol consumption to an unhealthy level. \n\nA study published in [Hepatology](https://aasldpubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/hep.32272) found that binge drinking among Americans increased by 21% during the COVID-19 pandemic. \n\nAdditionally, this sustained level of drinking can result in a 19 to 35 percent increase in mortality if continued. \n\nAs the pandemic wanes, we're now seeing people return to their normal lives. But many are now looking for ways to slow down or cut out their pandemic-level alcohol intake without going stone-cold sober. \n\nThose looking for an alternative to a glass of wine (or three) can rejoice at the opportunity modern marijuana offers. Cannabis can ease the transition of alcohol for those who have grown used to drinking excessively. \n\n![Weed is replacing alcohol](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_03_18_at_4_06_36_PM_2145d5c51f.png)\n\n### What's Next for the California Sober Trend? \n\nThe timing of the California Sober craze appears to be perfect, but where is it headed? We've already touched on the popularity of cannabis beverages, but [according to NielsenIQ](https://nielseniq.com/global/en/insights/analysis/2018/rise-of-no-and-low-alcohol/), sales of non-alcoholic drinks rose 33.2% in 2021 as well. \n\nPeople understand that alcohol is at the core of socialization in our modern world, but the abundance of technology and a marketplace filled with new alcohol alternatives is helping us reshape what 'sobriety' really means. \n\nWhether we call it California sober or a \"healthier social life,\" this trend is one we can all get behind. This mysterious disorder can affect anyone, including children, and its effects are so profound that the [World Health Organization calls migraine one of the 10 most disabling diseases](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/headache-disorders) in the world. \n\nBecause the causes of migraine are still not well understood, treatments usually focus on managing headache pain, calming stomach distress, and reducing the anxiety many migraine sufferers experience during an attack.\n\nNow, [a growing body of research](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8459575/)\n suggests that [cannabis can play an important role](https://hellomd.com/articles/new-study-finds-cannabis-effective-in-treatment-for-migraines) in reducing the frequency and severity of migraine attacks, thanks to the effects of cannabis compounds such as THC and CBD on the central nervous system and brain. And since cannabis is now legal for both recreational and medical purposes in Illinois, any adult resident can choose from a variety of cannabis products to relieve migraine symptoms, available from any of the state’s many legal cannabis dispensaries.\n\n### What is Migraine?\n\n![iStock-956554528-min.jpg](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/i_Stock_956554528_min_f52d311899.jpg)\n\nMigraine is a common neurological disease. In fact, about one in four US households includes someone with migraine, and it’s estimated that it affects about one in seven people globally, with potentially serious consequences for school, work, and daily life. Although migraine affects many people, mostly women, [its causes are not well understood](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/migraine-headache/symptoms-causes/syc-20360201#:~:text=A%20migraine%20is%20a%20headache,sensitivity%20to%20light%20and%20sound.). A migraine attack can include:\n\nA **prodrome**, a period that begins one or two days before a migraine strikes. Prodrome symptoms can include varied symptoms such as constipation, food cravings, or a general feeling that something is “off.”\n\n**Aura**, a period just before a migraine begins that can include disturbances in vision, hearing, or other senses, Aura symptoms can include a tingling feeling in the extremities, vision loss or hypersensitivity to sounds, motion, or other sensory input. Migraine symptoms can also include weakness on one side and problems with speaking, which mimic symptoms of a stroke. \n\nA [migraine attack](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/migraine-headache/symptoms-causes/syc-20360201) can include a pounding headache, usually on one side of the head, nausea, vomiting, and other whole-body symptoms. It’s also possible to have an “ocular migraine,” which is characterized by vision changes, but no severe headache. \n\nMany migraine sufferers also experience a “**postdrome**” period. For a day or so after a migraine attack, they might feel tired, confused, or weak. Some people also feel elated or euphoric. Other postdrome symptoms include pain when turning the head or tenderness around the eye sockets.\n\nAlthough migraine is common, science still hasn’t quite figured it out. Research indicates that it’s a neurological disease that affects pain messaging in the brain. Some studies suggest that migraine temporarily affects blood flow to certain areas of the brain and optic nerve. Genetic and environmental factors may also play a role. \n\nWhatever the cause, it’s clear that migraine can be triggered by many different circumstances and events, including bright lights, stress, foods and beverages, or hormonal changes. Other causes include weather changes, intense physical activity, or certain medications.\n\n### Cannabis: A Natural Migraine Remedy\n\n![iStock-1286512381-min.jpg](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/i_Stock_1286512381_min_1eaf3aecfb.jpg)\n\nWith so many different triggers and a mysterious underlying process, migraine sufferers turn to a variety of home remedies, [lifestyle changes](https://hellomd.com/articles/lifestyle-changes-you-can-make-to-prevent-migraines), and over the counter or prescription medications for relief of the pain and other symptoms. But [research indicates](https://www.ajmc.com/view/prolonged-medical-cannabis-use-reduces-migraine-frequency-study-finds) that cannabis can reduce the dependence on those medications, and lower the frequency and severity of migraine attacks themselves.\n\nThe many compounds and terpenes in cannabis can [trigger responses](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-to-ease-migraine-pain-with-cannabis) in the body’s endocannabinoid system, a whole-body network of cell receptors that are activated both by natural cannabinoid chemicals and the very similar ones found in the cannabis Sativa plant. These compounds, including psychoactive THC, [immune-boosting CBD](https://hellomd.com/articles/the-best-cbd-marijuana-strains-for-migraines), and a long list of “minor” compounds, trigger activity in systems for pain messaging and mood. That helps to reduce pain and ease the anxiety, gastric symptoms, and other discomforts that accompany migraine.\n\nCannabis can help to relieve migraine symptoms in any form. Some say that smoking or vaping can be more effective, but edibles, tinctures, and other products, even topicals, can also bring relief. Whether you’re a medical marijuana patient or a recreational user, new products of all kinds are available for migraine relief at licensed cannabis dispensaries all over Illinois.\n\n### Cannabis in Illinois: What’s Legal?\n\n![iStock-1285800836-min.jpg](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/i_Stock_1285800836_min_8ccb839afa.jpg)\n\nCannabis [has been legal in Illinois](https://www.illinoislegalaid.org/legal-information/cannabis-or-marijuana-laws-and-penalties-basics) for both recreational and medical purposes since January 2020, so any Illinois resident who’s 21 or older can purchase cannabis products from the state’s many dispensaries. Recreational use is subject to considerable restrictions, but those restrictions can be avoided with a [medical marijuana card](https://hellomd.com/get-started/illinois/). To get one, you’ll need to consult with a healthcare practitioner who can confirm that you have a qualifying medical condition.\n\n### Cannabis Products for Migraine in Illinois\n\nIn Illinois, migraine is on the list of qualifying conditions. Poor sleep has a multitude of causes ranging from simple lifestyle issues to anxiety, chronic pain, and discomforts caused by many health conditions, and getting too little sleep can compromise daily life in many ways.\n\nBecause insomnia can have so many causes, people struggling with sleeplessness turn to a variety of remedies that include holistic remedies, changes to sleep routines, and a wide range of prescription and over-the-counter sleep aids. These medications can have side effects that include a “hungover” feeling, problems with concentration, and a condition called parasomnia, in which people under the influence of a sleep medication engage in wake-time actions such as walking, driving, or shopping. \n\nBut research reveals that compounds in the cannabis plant [can support healthy sleep](https://hellomd.com/articles/dreaming-of-better-sleep-cannabis-may-help) without the potentially toxic side effects of common sleep aids. Cannabis works naturally with the body’s [endocannabinoid system](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4789136/) to calm anxiety, promote relaxation and ease the chronic pain that can interfere with sleep. And now, Pennsylvania residents can choose from a variety of premium cannabis products for sleep from the state’s many legal cannabis dispensaries. Here’s a look at how cannabis can help you sleep, along with five of the best cannabis products for sleep available in Pennsylvania today.\n\n### What Causes Insomnia?\n\n![iStock-1337766466-min.jpg](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/i_Stock_1337766466_min_cde4758eca.jpg)\n\nInsomnia simply means “an inability to sleep,” and the term is an umbrella for many different short and long-term sleep problems. Short-term causes for insomnia, such as an upcoming stressful event, usually resolve quickly on their own. But poor sleep can become chronic, which contributes to health issues such as diabetes, obesity, and, according to some research, dementia. \n\nCommon [contributors to chronic insomnia](https://www.sleepfoundation.org/insomnia/what-causes-insomnia) include anxiety, stress, and pain and discomfort from many conditions such as arthritis and cancer. Certain medications can also contribute to insomnia, and so can changes to sleep routines due to shift work or caregiving. Insomnia is on the rise in the era of COVID-19, too, caused by the stresses of the pandemic. \n\nFor some causes of insomnia, small changes can create conditions for restful sleep. Herbal teas, gentle exercise, or changes to the sleep environment can help many people get to sleep. Iff those don’t help, sleep aids like [Ambien](https://www.ambien.com/) or [Restoril](https://www.rxlist.com/restoril-drug.htm) can force the brain into downtime. But the side effects of these medications can cause daytime sleepiness, trouble concentrating, and other problems, including the rare but dangerous parasomnia, a condition in which people under the influence of a sleep aid behave as if they’re awake.\n\n### Cannabis Supports Sleep Naturally\n\n![iStock-1320093231-min.jpg](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/i_Stock_1320093231_min_913d906227.jpg)\n\nThe cannabis Sativa plant is rich in compounds that work with the body’s own system of cannabinoid receptors to [promote sleep naturally](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-sleep-disorders-cannabis-can-help-alleviate) without the side effects of medications. The endocannabinoid system responds both to cannabis-like chemicals produced naturally by the body and to cannabis compounds such as THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), \n\nThis large network of cell receptors is responsible for maintaining balance, or homeostasis, among the body’s many subsystems, including those that regulate mood, cognition, and pain. Consuming cannabis in any of its many forms triggers responses in endocannabinoid receptors in the brain and central nervous system, which [reduces pain](https://hellomd.com/articles/studies-support-cannabis-as-an-effective-painkiller), [relieves anxiety](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-for-anxiety-and-stress-disorders), and promotes feelings of [relaxation and calm](https://hellomd.com/articles/studies-support-cannabis-as-an-effective-painkiller) for a better night’s sleep.\n\n### What to Know About Cannabis in Pennsylvania\n\nCannabis for medical purposes [has been legal in Pennsylvania since 201](https://www.health.pa.gov/topics/programs/Medical%20Marijuana/Pages/Patients.aspx), but outside of legitimate medical needs, it still remains [illegal, with penalties for possession and sale](https://norml.org/laws/pennsylvania-penalties-2/). Under the current law, Pennsylvania residents with a serious condition diagnosed by an approved healthcare provider can get a [medical marijuana card](https://hellomd.com/get-started/pennsylvania/) that allows them to buy a variety of cannabis products from any of the state’s registered dispensaries. \n\n### The Best Cannabis Products in Pennsylvania for Sleep\n\nIf you’re a [qualified medical cannabis cardholder in Pennsylvania](https://pennsylvania.hellomd.com/start), you can purchase cannabis products for smoking, vaping and consuming from any Pennsylvania cannabis dispensary, including innovative new products designed to support quality sleep.
