Between all the festivities, gift giving, short days and occasional sickness, there is plenty to be stressed about. Let’s face it, the holidays can act as a breeding ground for anxiety and the blues. \n\nSo how can you deal with holiday induced stress and anxiety? I asked some of our staff at HelloMD how they navigate through the holiday season with a modicum of cheer and they’ve offered up some of their favorite product recommendations for bringing the year to a close with a smile on their face. \n\n### CBD Gummy Bears \n\n\"Nothing eases my anxiety like a high CBD strain, however during the holidays I am not always amongst canna-friendly company. Even a quiet vaporizer puff can be too conspicuous amidst the wrong company, which results in more anxiety than I had in the first place! For this reason, I recommend keeping a few CBD canna-bears around for some discreet and effective anxiety relief.\" \n\nRyan - Customer Service\n\n### Kiva Terra Bites\n\n\"[Kiva Terra Bites](https://www.hellomd.com/biz/kiva-confections) are always a favorite of mine for tackling anxiety on the go. At 5 mg per serving these bite sized edibles come in two varieties, chocolate covered blueberries and chocolate covered espresso beans. A low dose of THC can serve as the perfect midday pick me up to combat stress and anxiety, and eating a little chocolate only seems to add to that effect. If you’re in need of an energy boost, be sure to go for the espresso bean flavor, as both chocolate and espresso beans contain caffeine.\" \n\nChris - Business Associate\n\n### Satori Low Dose Edibles\n\n\"[Satori](http://satorichocolates.com/) is a new brand that has yet to hit the shelves of most local dispensaries. These little chocolate love bombs are micro dosed anywhere from 1mg - 10mg. My favorite is to pop in a chocolate covered 3mg strawberry and follow it with 2 pieces of 1mg chocolate raisins every hour or so. Most edibles make me a little sleepy but these morsels put a smile on my face, making me giggly and happy, which is what I need! Satori will be widely available after the first of the year throughout California. Stay tuned, this brand is going to kill it.\"\n\nPamela - Co Founder\n\n### Flower Power Muscle & Joint Balm \n\n\"I don’t leave the house without my Flower Power Muscle & Joint Balm, especially during the busy holiday season. That's either sad commentary on life after 50, or just strong evidence that I finally found a topical that works! Much like the over-the-counter topical market – for pain – the cannabis one is flooded with products to choose from when looking for something to make pain go away. Flower Power is easy to apply and smells great – thanks to all the essential oils mixed for good measure. Mostly importantly, it just works. Flower Power is available in California. \n\nAnd for those of you elsewhere in the US looking to stop pain, I also highly recommend Apothecanna’s Extra-Strength Relieving Body Oil. As a bonus, it comes packaged as beautifully as any cannabis product I’ve seen.\"\n\nLarry - VP of Business Development\n\n### Jane’s Brew Coffee & Tea\n\n\"When I feel under weather a cannabis infused tea or coffee is what I need to cozy up by the fire. There are a number of these on the market, and availability will vary depending on your area, although I’m particularly fond of the Jane’s Brew chamomile tea. \n\nComing in a number of THC and CBD versions, be sure to choose which one is right for you. A warm cup of tea with a just the right amount of THC can go the a long way to help you melt the stress away from a long day. For added holiday bonus points, check out on of their infused hot chocolates.\"\n\nChris - Business Associate\n\n### Om Edibles Lion Balm\n\n\"Whether you are sore from the Black Friday brawl, get stuck sleeping on Uncle Craig’s couch, or are just a casualty of stress, the holiday’s pile on the pressure. I can handle the stress, however my back certainly cannot. The catch though, is that in the presence of my family, I would like to avoid discussing the primary ingredient of the balm slopped on my throbbing lumbar. \n\nOm edibles makes a fantastic balm that also comes in a stick form, much like a stick of deodorant. You simply slip the cap off, give it a twist, and slather it on a tightened back and neck. All of this can be done in a discreet motion, without plopping a big tub of “PROP 215 CANNABIS INFUSED” on the holiday table or retreating to the bathroom for a glob of cream.\"\n\nRyan - Customer Service\n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS CAN RELIEVE STRESS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-can-relieve-stress)\n\n### Girl Scout Cookies\n\n\"[GSC](https://www.hellomd.com/marijuana-strains/girl-scout-cookies) is just the best strain in my opinion. I always have it around in one form or another (the forum cut, thin mint, and platinum varieties are all a treat). This doesn’t have a holiday twist. Anxiety free, 40/60 hybrid, psychedelic when you’re up and sleepy when your down; it is just the best strain for all over stress reduction.\"\n\nRyan - Customer Service\n\n### Platinum Kush \n\n\"Platinum Kush is my go to for stress relief. After hosting Thanksgiving for the first time with my girlfriend for 8 people my stress level was an 8 out of 10. Platinum Kush helps to take the edge off and get me back to a baseline. My preference is to smoke an indica which mellow me out and calm down. Platinum Kush apperently has trace amounts of CBD which relaxes my body and helps take my anxiety down a notch.\"\n\nBart - Customer Service\n\n### GrandDaddy Purple\n\n\"I always have an indica strain on hand, and love them for their deep relaxing effects. I tend to use indicas as a sleep aide as well. [Grand Daddy Purple](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cbbc4d520d60009f4f4a4) is among my top choices for an indica, but any other purple will do. A higher THC percentage at above 20%, it is fantastic for helping you unwind and get to sleep more quickly.\" \n \nChris - Business Associate\n\n### Chernobyl \n\n\"Laughter is certainly the best medicine and Chernobyl, being one of the few strains that gives me the giggles, will be my go to this holiday season. This fantastic sativa dominant delivers an anxiety free head high that creeps into the dreamy glow of euphoria and intermittent giggles. Perfect for those \"extended family” dinners and those who feel they are in need of a good chuckle.\"\n\nRyan - Customer Service\n\n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. The first migraine I had in my teens hit me like a lightning bolt, and I fell to the ground on my knees holding my head and it didn’t stop until I passed out and woke up 24 hours later. From that time on I would experience migraines frequently and they would come in clusters. Often I would be vomiting, see an aura and spend days in bed. \n\nVisiting with doctors, they never really had an answer but they would hand me a prescription. After multiple medications that did not work, and all which had intense side effects, plus visits to alternative practitioners, I assumed this was something that I needed to live with. And I did, for the next 20+ years. As time wore on my migraines settled into a monthly pattern. But after the birth of my 3rd child, they suddenly became much, much worse.\n\n### Opioids - A Long Term Solution? \n\nTrying to raise three kids all under the age of 4 and working full time, I did not have time for migraines. So, at the onset of a migraine I would pop a Vicodin and maybe another. The Vicodin helped to keep the pain at bay, as I needed to function and could not afford to spend hours, much less days in bed. Even at the time, I knew this needed to be a short term strategy, addiction was too easy a trap.\n\nFinally, a friend insisted that I consider cannabis as a solution. Honestly, I had nothing to lose, but I thought my chances of success were zero to none. I also did not consider myself a stoner.\n\n### Marijuana Stopped My Migraines \n\nMarijuana stopped my migraines. After 20+ years, I do not experience frequent migraines anymore. It did not happen right away but today I live relatively pain free, and free of narcotics. How did I do it? It’s a two step process. The first step is preventative, which cannot be over emphasized. The second step is preventing pain if a migraine/headache does sneak through. \n\nThe preventative steps are relatively simple. I take 10 mg of 20:1 CBD to THC Rosette Wellnesstincture in the morning. I have found this ratio to be the most effective. Later in the day I take Moxie Meds 4:1 tincture, also at a 10 mg dosage.\n \nIt is important to note that high ratio CBD products do not make you high and although I ingest cannabis throughout the day, I am never high when taking these preventative measures. Also, CBD is not a silver bullet that takes effect in a day or two. I have found that the effects are cumulative and it took a 2-3 months of daily dosing before the longer lasting impact was felt.\n\nIn addition to cannabis, I also take [Vitamin B and Magnesium](http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/condition/migraine-headache) which research has found to reduce migraines in patients who take these supplements regularly. I make sure to exercise regularly, typically hiking 3x a week and yoga 3x a week. Lastly, I eliminated gluten, soy and wine from my diet, which personally helped me, but may not be necessary for others.\n\nToday, I am almost 100% migraine free. What does happen is what I call a ‘shadow headache’. When I feel the shadow descending, which is usually the result of a stressful event, I reach for my vape pen. As I do not do well with high THC, my oil cartridges are always high CBD and low THC. \n\nCBD is known to be an analgesic as well as an anti inflammatory. My favorite oil cartridge is Bloom Farms Electra Tsu 3:1 oil cartridge. LOVE…I even wrote them a haiku, my highest form of praise and adoration.\n\n### Preventing Migraines\n\nMigraine prevention is a possible. What triggers a migraine is individual, but the solutions mentioned above could prevent yours. I am always surprised by the amount of acceptance I hear from migraine sufferers, where all the attention is paid to pain management rather than migraine prevention. Why not try to stop them before they begin? As a result of my preventative efforts my life has changed significantly, for the better. I hope perhaps my solution helps you or someone you know.\n\nDo you have a migraine solution? We would love to hear it, please share in the comments below!\n\n_____________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. For most people, these infections are mainly a bad nuisance, though they can problematic for young children, the elderly and other at-risk groups, such as people with compromised immune systems.\n\nThe flu and common cold are caused by viruses and thus there’s no cure—the best way to treat these infections is to get plenty of rest. There are a number of over-the-counter medicines and natural remedies that you can also take to help you fight cold and flu symptoms, making you more comfortable. \n\nAlong this thread, many people are now turning to marijuana for cold and flu relief. The plant’s anti-inflammatory properties can help you cope with symptoms like sore throat, sinus pain and body aches. Some researchers also think that cannabis’s ability to modulate the immune system could reduce the number of flu-related deaths. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n### How Can Cannabis Help Fight the Flu or Common Cold?\n\nBoth cannabidiol (CBD) and THC, molecules found within the cannabis plant, can help ease many symptoms of the flu and common cold. \n\nCBD has natural antibacterial properties which can help fight against secondary bacterial infections that may develop from the cold and flu. CBD is also an anti-inflammatory, properties may help open up the sinus passages and increase ease of breathing.\n\nTHC can reduce pain and help sufferers to sleep, which allows their body to rest and heal from the cold. In general, cannabis can also be extremely helpful at reducing headaches and migraines, both which of are common symptoms that people experience with their colds. \n\n### Marijuana May Provide Cold & Flu Relief Via Immune System Modulation\n\nDr. Robert J. Melamede, the chairman of the Biology department at the University of Colorado at Boulder, thinks that [marijuana’s dampening effect on the immune system could reduce the number of deaths from the swine flu]( http://abcnews.go.com/Health/SwineFluNews/company-tables-medical-marijuana-swine-flu/story?id=8214468). \n\nWhen you get the cold or flu, your immune system responds by attacking the virus—this is what causes some of those annoying symptoms like a runny nose and sore throat. Problem is, sometimes your immune system can go overboard, and in serious cases this can lead to organ failure or even death. \n\nSimilar to how cannabis can be helpful at fighting autoimmune diseases, cannabis’s ability to suppress the immune system response could keep your system from overworking itself—it might also help reduce some of those pesky symptoms that make having the cold or flu so miserable. \n\nRELATED: [LEARN HOW TO MAKE A CANNABIS INFUSED TEA TO FIGHT A COLD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56b946413c7953000800007d/diy-recipe-marijuana-infused-tea)\n\n### Using Marijuana to Boost Your Immune System During Cold & Flu Season\n\n_Chalkboard Magazine_ recently featured hemp-derived CBD oil on its website as a great component in an immunity boosting superfood tea, due to the molecule’s antioxidant properties. \n\nCBD that’s sourced from hemp can sometimes be found in places where medical cannabis is still illegal. It’s now being seen as a supplement that can help fight the common cold and other illnesses that tend to crop up during the colder months. \n\nThe omega-3 fatty acids in hemp and cannabis oil can work to reduce the inflammation in the body to not only help you get over the cold, but to work to strengthen the immune system against contracting other viruses. \n\nCannabis can be combined with other super foods like turmeric to boost its anti-inflammatory properties. A 2016 study out of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado concluded that [using medical marijuana could greatly reduce the frequency of migraine headaches](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26749285). \r\n\r\nThe study, which was published in the _Journal of Human Pharmacology and Drug Therapy_, included 121 adult participants. With the use of cannabis in multiple forms on a daily basis, the average number of migraines decreased from 10.4 to 4.6 per month. Overall 85% of participants reported fewer migraines, 19.8% reported that cannabis helped prevent their migraines, and 11.6% of participants said that medical marijuana stopped their migraines altogether. The study also identified that the inhalation of marijuana was the best administration method for fast migraine relief. \r\n\r\n### Marijuana and Migraines: The Endocannabinoid Connection\r\n\r\nA 2008 study published in _Neuroendocrinology Letters_ found that [migraines are deeply connected with endocannabinoid function](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18404144). The study stated that the possible cause of migraines could be an endocannabinoid deficiency, meaning cannabis could be extremely helpful in decreasing migraines by supplementing the body's natural store of endocannabinoids. \r\n\r\nCannabidiol (CBD) has been found to be very effective at treating migraines because of its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is also helpful at relieving migraine symptoms due to its ability to greatly reduce pain. CBD-heavy strains, however, help alleviate symptoms while keeping sufferers alert. \r\n\r\nMost notably, because they have little to no psychoactivity, high CBD strains will allow a patient to get through the day without the feeling of being stoned. Most of the high CBD strains listed below do contain some THC however. Depending on how sensitive you are to THC, some marijuana strains may be borderline psychoactive. It will require a bit of trial and error to see which CBD strain works best in easing your migraines while keeping you on your toes during the day.\r\n\r\n### The Best CBD Marijuana Strains for Migraine Relief\r\n\r\n#### Canna-Tsu\r\n\r\nCanna-Tsu is a hybrid strain that’s a mix of Cannatonic and Sour Tsunami. Canna-Tsu is known for its high levels of CBD and low levels of THC. It’s known to produce calming effects and mental clarity. Canna-Tsu helps reduce inflammation, which is often one of the most common causes of migraines. This marijuana strain is also well known for alleviating the pain associated with migraines and headaches. \r\n\r\n#### Harlequin\r\n\r\nHarlequin is a 75% sativa-dominant hybrid that has a 5:2 CBD to THC ratio. With about 4–7% THC and 8–16% CBD, Harlequin produces the feeling of a clear-headed alertness, which may help people get through their day. With its nice a balance of THC to CBD, this marijuana strain is very helpful for people that have high levels of pain associated with migraines. Harlequin is also known to be relaxing, but non-sedative and without the intense psychoactive high that comes with higher levels of THC. \r\n\r\n#### ACDC\r\n\r\n[ACDC](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cbe97d520d60009f4f4a5/acdc) is a high CBD strain that’s sativa-dominant. ACDC has a 20:1 CBD to THC ratio, with CBD levels as high as 19%. It’s known for its efficacy at reducing inflammation because of its high levels of CBD. This makes it effective at reducing the symptoms of migraines. ACDC is also good at reducing anxiety and depression. Due to its extremely low THC content, this marijuana strain isn’t likely to give you a psychoactive high.\r\n\r\n#### Cannatonic\r\n\r\n[Cannatonic](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce5dcd520d60009f4f4bd/cannatonic) is known for its low THC content, which is often below 6%, and its high CBD content, which is normally at about 6–17% and sometimes even higher. It’ss known for producing relaxing and uplifting effects. Cannatonic is acclaimed as one of the top medical marijuana strains because it’s great at treating headache and migraine pain with little to no psychoactive effects.\r\n\r\n#### Sour Tsunami\r\n\r\nSour Tsunami is specifically bred for its high CBD content, making it effective at reducing inflammation that’s a part of migraines. It’s a sativa-dominant hybrid with about 10% CBD and a THC content under 10%. Sour Tsunami is known for its ability to relieve pain associated with migraines. At a 1:1 ratio, this marijuana strain may induce psychoactive effects, although it will likely be at most a mild high.\r\n\r\n#### Remedy\r\n\r\nRemedy is an indica strain with high levels of CBD—around 15%—and almost no THC—less than 1%. Remedy is known to produce a mellow, relaxed state. Its high CBD levels make this marijuana strain good at helping reduce the inflammation that causes migraines. Remedy is most akin to ACDC as it’s known to help with pain without the head high that’s associated with higher levels of THC. \r\n\r\n#### Stephen Hawking Kush\r\n\r\nStephen Hawking Kush, also known as SHK, is an indica-dominant hybrid. Stephen Hawking Kush is known for its high levels of CBD. It’s known to be soothing and relaxing. Its also known for its ability to keep pain at bay despite having low levels of THC. There are three slightly different phenotypes of SHK, and they’re all known to be extremely effective at treating migraines. Also known to help people with fatigue, SHK keeps people alert even as it relieves their pain symptoms. \r\n\r\n#### Hawaiian Dream\r\n\r\nHawaiian Dream is known to be an uplifting sativa strain with high levels of CBD. It usually has about double the amount of CBD as it does THC. Hawaiian Dream is known to be a good remedy for treating the pain and inflammation of migraines. This marijuana strain is also known to provide relief without inducing brain fog, so it’s extremely helpful for the daytime treatment of migraine symptoms.\r\n\r\n#### Sweet and Sour Widow\r\n\r\nSweet and Sour Widow is a 70% indica-dominant cannabis strain. It typically has a ratio of 1:1 of CBD to THC. This makes this cannabis strain effective through its pain-relieving qualities of THC while remaining borderline or mild in its psychoactive effect. Meanwhile, the CBD contained in Sweet and Sour Widow provides the added benefit of anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve migraine symptoms while keeping a clear head.\r\n\r\nDo you have questions about marijuana and migraines? In this review I am going to share my absolute favorite CBD product available in California. It has altered me, forever, for the better!\n\n### Bloom Farms – CBD Electra-Tsu Cartridge\n\nBloom Farms is a beloved manufacturer within the California cannabis industry. The packaging is dead gorgeous, the vape pen experience is exceptional and the cannabis is sourced from top tier farms that harvest crops with organic practices. Often when you mention Bloom Farms, people get a happy look upon their face, and why not, they deliver a great experience. As a more or less purely medicinal consumer with a very low THC tolerance, I have found high THC vape pens simply have not worked well for me. So for the most part, Bloom Farms has not been an option for a cannabis consumer like myself. That is, until now!\n\n### Electra-Tsu is a CBD Bombshell\n\nLet’s be totally clear, Bloom Farms CBD Electra-Tsu oil 3:1 cartridge has officially stolen my heart. It has run away with it, hands down, this is my favorite CBD vape pen experience of all time. I can stop looking, I want to get married. Really.\n\nI have tried many CBD vape pens over the years and some work pretty well, enough to take the edge off of a migraine but none sent me to the moon. Taking an inhale of the Electra-Tsu, the woody flavor is lovely, with a tinge of a sweet aftertaste. The feeling of deep relaxation after a few inhales is exquisite. It is usually at this point I assume I will start getting sleepy, but with Electra-Tsu, there was a little kick of happiness and euphoria, which I guess is related to it being sativa-dominant. The ratio of 3 parts CBD to 1 part THC seems to be the perfect ratio, for me at least, and it turned my headache on its heels! This is a 'borderline' psychoactive oil cartridge, I felt GREAT but not altered significantly. It was just just enough! \n\nElectra-Tsu deserves to be placed in the limelight. She was bred specifically to be higher in CBD than THC. CBD happens to be non psychoactive as well, so it is a great choice for pain relief when you also need to function. The strain was bred from the combination of Electra and Tsunami and because the ratio of CBD is so high to THC, you will not feel like you need to go to bed or can’t leave the couch. It is also noted that this strain was bred to treat “pain, stress, and depression, without any anxiety or paranoid side effects”. I completely agree, as a person who tends to get cannabis-induced anxiety, this strain absolutely lives up to the promise. I purchased my cartridge at Sava, which does state wide delivery.\n\n### My Bloom Farms Haiku\n\nIf I were to write a Haiku about my love of the CBD Electra-Tsu vape pen and my gratitude to Bloom Farms for releasing a CBD product to an audience like me it would go like this:\n\n>Electra-Tsu you\n\n>Stole my heart instantly\n\n>Please don’t go away.\n\nEVER.\n\nDo you have questions about Bloom Farms? With so much variety, how do you know which methods of delivery are best for you? Never fear, we’ll go over some of all the most popular ways to consume CBD so you can find a delivery method that works well for your needs. \n\n### CBD Oil Can Come From Cannabis Or Hemp\n\nCBD can be sourced from marijuana or hemp, and while they’re the same species of plant—_Cannabis sativa_—there are [some differences between the two](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55f4509e64633100064f0000/hemp-and-cannabis-for-medicinal-purposes-is-there-a-difference). Hemp is naturally low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and high in CBD. Hemp-based CBD oil is sold across the country and tends to be more accessible. These oils have a THC content that’s less than 0.3%, making them eligible to be sold outside of dispensaries, though they tend to contain far less CBD than oil derived from cannabis.\n\nCBD oil made from cannabis contains more than 0.3% THC and also contains higher levels of complementary phytocannabinoids. Both THC and CBD are phytocannabinoids found in cannabis, but the plant actually contains many other phytocannabinoids in lower levels. These other phytocannabinoids are also believed to have medicinal qualities, and they are thought to interact with both CBD and THC to produce greater medicinal effects than each individual phytocannabinoid could do alone. \n\nThis phenomenon is known as the entourage effect, and many people claim that without the additional cannabinoids, CBD is far less effective medicinally. \n\n\n### How CBD Oil is Made \n\nUnless you’re smoking or vaping high CBD flower, all CBD that’s consumed must first be extracted from the plant. [CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55e12afb6539390006040000/cbd-oil-breaking-the-stereotypes-of-cannabis) is extracted from marijuana using a variety of solvents—a liquid that separates cannabis’s beneficial components like CBD and THC from the rest of the plant. The solvent and extraction method used depends on what the manufacturer intends to make with the end product. \n\nOne of the most common methods of CBD oil extraction is through the use of carbon dioxide or CO2. This method uses low temperatures and high pressures to create a potent and pure CBD oil. Ethanol is also commonly used in the extraction process, and when done appropriately, is better at preserving terpenes, aromatic compounds found in cannabis that can also contribute to the entourage effect. \n\nThe end result of these extraction processes is a thick resinous CBD oil or extract that can be made into a variety of products. \n\n### 1. CBD Oil Can Be Mixed With Liquids to Make Tinctures\n\nA CBD tincture consists of CBD oil that’s mixed with a liquid so that it can be administered via dropper. In herbal medicine, tinctures are herbal extracts mixed with a liquid—often alcohol or vegetable glycerin. CBD oils can be compounded with both of these liquids, but it’s more common to find CBD oils mixed with olive oil, hemp oil and fractionated coconut oil. This addition of healthy fats makes it easier for your body to process CBD. In the cannabis world, tinctures refer to CBD or THC oils that are compounded in liquid—whether it be alcohol, glycerin or another oil. \n\nTinctures can contain cannabis oils with CBD and little-to-no THC, while others come in varying CBD to THC ratios. A tincture can be taken through a dropper directly into the mouth or mixed into food or drink. Tinctures can be a discreet method of administration for cannabis, making it a good option for patients who need doses throughout the day. \n\n### 2. CBD Oils as Sublingual Sprays\n\nSublingual sprays are concentrated cannabis tinctures that are sprayed under the tongue. By holding these products under your tongue where a large number of capillaries provide a direct route for cannabis to enter your bloodstream, consumers should be able to feel the CBD oil’s effects in as little as 15 minutes. \n\nYou can get sublingual sprays in a variety of CBD to THC ratios, depending on your desired results. Care by Design makes a range of high CBD sublingual tinctures with varying amounts of THC. \nSublingual sprays can be discreet and allow for a patient to have a choice of multiple different CBD to THC ratios depending on what symptoms they are trying to target, or the time of day they are administering their medication. \n\n### 3. CBD Oil Can Be Baked Into Edibles\n\nCBD oil can be ingested directly, but many consumers prefer to put the oil into capsules to be taken like regular pills. CBD oil or decarboxylated flower can also be mixed into different foods like smoothies, or it can be baked into edibles. Pre-made CBD edibles are available in dispensaries and can be a great option for people who desire to have a discreet administration method for their medical cannabis.\n\nCBD edibles, like tinctures come in varying CBD to THC ratios. Depending on the amount of THC in the edibles, you may want to start with a small amount, wait for 30 minutes to an hour to see how you feel, and then take more as needed. \n\n### 4. CBD Topicals \n\n[Topical products](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57056541347686000800015a/cannabis-topicals-provide-relief-for-sore-muscles-and-pain) come in a variety of different forms, from salves to creams, and can be applied directly to the skin. CBD topicals have anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. \n\nTopical products are typically non-psychoactive, no matter their concentration of THC or CBD. CBD topicals can aid in reducing inflammation, which can help people who suffer from conditions such as arthritic joint pain or muscle aches. \n\n### 5. Vaporizing CBD Oil Offers Immediate Effects\n\nVaporizing allows for the effects of CBD to be felt quickly and tends to be a cleaner method of inhaling cannabis than smoking. Vaporizers come in many shapes and forms—some are convenient and portable while others, known as desktop vaporizers, must be plugged into an outlet for use. \n\nSome vaporizers consist of a battery unit and a refillable cartridge that contains CBD oil. These cartridges are usually disposable and consumers buy a new cartridge when needed. Good examples of these are the Bloom Farms Highlighters and associated cartridges. \n\nDesktop vaporizers aren’t portable and usually must be plugged into a power source to function. These often have much more potent effects than portable vaporizers and can often be used to consume both CBD concentrates and flowers. \n\nVape technology is always improving and now there are a few vaporizers on the market that allow consumers to vape both high CBD concentrates and flowers on-the-go. For example, the PAX 3 allows consumers to vaporize both CBD extracts and bud in a sleek, portable design. \n\nSome vaporizers can be costly, so for those who are hesitant about such a commitment, there are also high CBD disposable vape pens available. DomPens are disposable and a good option for convenient, on-the-go vaporizing. \n\n### 6. Smoking High CBD Marijuana Strains\n\nIf none of the above methods of CBD consumption appeal to you, you can always go with a classic: smoking. Smoking CBD can be done through a variety of means—joints, pipes and bongs are the most common. Like vaporizing, smoking CBD imparts immediate effects. The following are a few high CBD strains that you may want to look out for if considering this method. \n\n* Charlotte’s Web was created for a young girl who suffered from seizures. This strain has less than 0.3% THC and about 13% CBD. Charlotte’s web is a sativa and has no psychoactivity associated with it. Charlotte’s Web is popular for the treatment of seizures, but it can also be very helpful for other conditions that respond positively to high levels of CBD. \n\n* Canna-Tsu is a CBD-rich hybrid of Cannatonic and Sour Tsunami, which are both individually high CBD strains. Canna-Tsu, unlike Charlotte’s Web, has noticeable amounts of the cannabinoids THC and CBN, but it is highest in CBD. Canna-Tsu is about 13% CBD and is a great choice for pain management and anxiety. Most patients do not experience psychoactivity while using Canna-Tsu. It does, however, have about 10% THC, so some psychoactivity is possible for patients who are particularly sensitive. \n\n* Harlequin is a sativa-dominant hybrid with a 5:2 ratio of CBD to THC. Harlequin has little to no psychoactivity and is particularly helpful for people with stress, anxiety, or depression, because of its low content of THC compared to CBD. Harlequin can also be helpful for pain management, especially during the day for patients who do not want to experience any psychoactivity.\n\nDo you have questions about CBD? Constance Therapeutics works alongside health-care professionals to provide patients with the best possible treatment options, including high-quality, whole-plant cannabis extracts developed through a stringent, science-informed and patent-pending extraction methodology. \r\n\r\nIn this article, Constance shares her top seven tips on how to have a successful experience with medical marijuana oil. \r\n\r\n### What You Should Know About Cannabis Oil\r\n\r\nSo, you're new to cannabis oil. Cannabis oil comprises cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) that have been extracted from the marijuana plant. You may feel like there's a lot to learn, that so much of this feels like trial and error. I assure you that we've all been where you are now—myself included. \r\n\r\nI discovered the medicinal benefits of cannabis for myself after being diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease. I tried just about every pharmaceutical medication on the market to make myself feel better, even at the detriment of my already declining health. At my breaking point, I decided to give medicinal cannabis a try, and I'm happy to say that I'm doing so much better now than I was before. \r\n\r\nYour goals for giving medical cannabis oil a try may be different from mine, or from the person next to you at the dispensary. It's fascinating how much potential this plant holds as a form of treatment. \r\n\r\nBut you likely also have some hesitations about using cannabis oil. I had those, too. To help answer your questions and address your concerns, here are a few tried-and-true suggestions and best practices to encourage a positive first experience with cannabis oil. \r\n\r\n### 1. When it Comes to Using Cannabis Oil, Start Slow and Small\r\n\r\nIf you've never used cannabis oil before, I recommend starting with a small dose. Everyone experiences it differently, and different strains of cannabis and cannabinoid ratios in oil elicit different effects. So it's best to learn how your body reacts and consume accordingly.\r\n\r\nFor example, if you're using a vaporizer for the first time, I recommend starting with one 10-second inhale and waiting 2-3 minutes to feel the effects. First-time cannabis oil users should start with a rice grain-size drop at first. It's entirely possible to build your tolerance, but it takes time, so start small and increase your cannabis oil intake slowly.\r\n\r\n### 2. Select Your Environment Carefully When Consuming Cannabis Oil\r\n\r\nTake cannabis oil in a comfortable, familiar environment around someone you know and trust. I recommend that anyone who's trying cannabis oil for the first time do so in an environment that's safe to them. I find that home is always best. Also, it can be good to have someone nearby that you're comfortable with just in case you begin to feel anxious. That can really make the difference in your experience.\r\n\r\n### 3. Take the Cannabis Oil With Some Food in Your Stomach\r\n\r\nFew things are best done on an empty stomach, and cannabis oil is no exception. It helps to avoid any potential nausea that can result.\r\n\r\n### 4. Don't Take Cannabis Oil With Other Intoxicating Substances\r\n\r\nYou should have something in your stomach when you're ingesting cannabis oil, but that something shouldn't be alcohol. This is because alcohol can increase levels of THC in the blood, thereby intensifying marijuana's effects. \r\n\r\n### 5. Drink Ginger Tea If You're Feeling Unsettled From the Cannabis Oil\r\n\r\nIf you feel nauseated at all from consuming cannabis oil (or any time, really), try drinking some ginger tea. Ginger is a natural nausea suppressor, and it works wonders for settling an upset stomach. The process of making and drinking tea can also be quite soothing and grounding on its own, should you experience any anxiety when having cannabis oil.\r\n\r\n### 6. Remain Calm If You've Had too Much Cannabis Oil\r\n\r\nIf you feel as though you've taken too much cannabis oil, always do your best to remain calm. Lie down in a comfortable area, dim the lights, and remember that the uncomfortable feeling will eventually subside.\r\n\r\n### 7. Remember Your Goal for Using Cannabis Oil\r\n\r\nEvery treatment has its side effects, but it's important to keep the goal of your treatment in mind. If you're taking medicinal cannabis oil and find that you're having a hard time adjusting to some of THC's side effects—dry mouth, fatigue, paranoia, anxiety, know that these aren't permanent. Think about the potential benefits from the treatment, how it will help your overall health, and why you're using cannabis oil in the first place. Reminding yourself of potential positives can help to keep yourself focused.\r\n\r\nDo you have additional tips to share for fellow cannabis oil users? Jan has chosen to follow a holistic route for her treatment of Parkinson’s, rather than more traditional western pharmaceutical methods. Through a combination of dietary change, exercise, natural supplements, and cannabis, Jan has found relief from her Parkinson’s related symptoms and hopes to slow the progression of the disease. She is also a passionate Wellness Consultant, helping others to learn about the potential benefits of cannabis for Parkinson's and other conditions.\r\n\r\n### What were your initial symptoms?\r\n\r\nI was diagnosed with Parkinson’s when I was 45 years old. My mom, my sister, and I all have genetic Parkinson’s Disease. My mom was diagnosed at age 60. My sister is one year older than I and she was diagnosed at age 44. I had noticed that I was holding my arm funny. My right arm was straight out and not swinging while walking, so I called my sister and asked her if her arm did this funny thing where it just doesn't move. She said, “Oh you’re holding the invisible purse,” and this same stiff arm was one of her first symptoms as well. We then all went to the website 23 and Me (a genetic testing site) and ultimately found we all have the gene Lrrk2. Once we were all identified with the particular gene, we did a bunch of studies through UCSF, Stanford, and Sunnyvale Parkinson’s Institute. Genetic Parkinson’s hasn't become very evident until lately, so we are considered a unique case. \r\n\r\n### How did Parkinson’s affect your daily life?\r\n\r\nI am a pretty healthy person, so I wasn’t sure in the beginning if it would affect me at all. My mother and sister each are having their own individual journey, so I was pretty sure mine would be different as well. My sister started western meds and eventually had two brain surgeries, called deep brain stimulation (DBS). They put a pole in your head and a battery in your chest that allows for the stimulation of the production of dopamine. My sister had that done on both sides. My mother also had that surgery at 78 years old. Deep brain stimulation surgery really works for tremors and the movement symptoms because it stimulates the dopamine production. \r\n\r\nTremors are not my biggest issue though, my issue is really stiffness and rigidity in the way that I walk and drag my leg. I also can’t move my hand very well. I don’t have a resting tremor but when I try to use my hand it tremors. I just do everything with my left hand now because my right hand doesn’t signal to move properly, along with my right leg. In order to even get the deep brain stimulation surgery, you need to be on levodopa/carbidopa to make sure that dopamine actually helps the symptoms. I have opted to not take western drugs for now, but I would also not be opposed if I felt it would improve my quality of life. My neurologist told me, “the drugs do nothing to slow or stop the progression of the disease”. However, they can apparently help with symptoms. \r\n\r\n### Was cannabis your first choice for treatment?\r\n\r\nCannabis wasn’t my first choice. I didn't know much about it six years ago. I read Grain Brain and learned how grain is bad for your brain function, so I made some dietary changes. I cut wheat out of my diet and I take antioxidants like green tea, blueberries and turmeric to keep my immune system strong. I also exercise every day. I am a trained yoga practitioner and I’m also a trained Ayurveda practitioner. I knew a lot about health, nutrition, and exercise, so I worked to do everything naturally. \r\n\r\nI also tried a form of natural dopamine, which is made from mung beans called Mucuna Pruriens. Western pharmaceutical companies traditionally use Sinemet for Parkinson’s. Sinemet is made of Levodopa Carbidopa, which helps your body get the dopamine through the blood brain barrier. Alternative medicine practitioners have developed a protocol with amino acids that gets the dopamine in you, and through the blood brain barrier without making you sick, but unfortunately it made me very sick. I tried it for a year and it did help with my symptoms a bit, but it made me nauseous all of the time so I stopped doing it. That’s when I started taking CBD tinctures. A friend told me about CBD tinctures and how they might help me, and I have been doing so ever since. \r\n\r\n### When did you first consider medicinal cannabis? \r\n\r\nIt was through the friend who recommended it. Then I immediately began doing research. We had a family friend of ours who was featured through United Patients Group. You can watch a video of his story, Stan Rutner, who was basically dying of cancer. As a last resort they gave him CBD oil and the results were amazing. My mom had sent me this video, so I called his daughter to talk to her about it. She was the person who got me the first information on what to take and how. I started meeting more and more people that gave me information on medicinal cannabis. The first tincture I used was a CBD tincture by Care by Design. \r\n\r\n### Do you use CBD and THCA?\r\n\r\nNow, I’m actually taking CBDA and THCA, they are both non-psychoactive. I micro dose both throughout the day. I take three doses a day about an hour before each meal. The product I take is made by a company called Alta Botanicals. I am working on a cannabis protocol with Alta Botanicals for Parkinson’s to get the [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) stimulated and working again. \r\n\r\n### How are you trying to help other patients?\r\n\r\nAlta Botanicals and I are trying various methods on me to see what works best with Parkinson's. I am working hard to stick to a protocol, which is easy to do because the medicine is so simple to take. We’re are observing what is going on and ultimately, we would love to be able to cure this disease and help other people with this disease. That’s the goal, of course, to help people get better. \r\n\r\n### How has using cannabis changed your day to day life?\r\n\r\nCannabis gives me some relief from my symptoms. When you have Parkinson’s, you lose your sense of taste and smell, your body kind of freezes up. You don’t have the same senses that you normally would because you lose your dopamine, which can also cause apathy and depression. CBDA and the THCA have actually brought back my sense of taste and smell. My physical senses, like my touch and feel, have also come back. \r\n\r\nWith Parkinson’s you tend to lose your connection between body and mind because of the lack of dopamine, but now I am much more aware of my body mind connection than I was before. I am still limping quite a bit and I still have trouble with my right hand. It’s hard, it is definitely still hard. I think if I keep building cannabis up in my system it will get better. There are definitely some days when I just want to say screw it and go on western meds and get rid of my symptoms, but the western meds don’t do anything to slow or stop the disease, they just mask the symptoms. With cannabis, we can actually do something to slow the disease because of the connection between Parkinson’s and the endocannabinoid system. There are also a lot of side effects to the western pharmaceuticals, which I want to try to avoid. \r\n\r\n### What would you want other people to know about cannabis?\r\n\r\nI went to a woman’s cannabis party hosted by [Octavia Wellness](http://octaviarosewellness.com/), where I was able to meet many people in the industry. That was my first experience where I felt like I had something to share and people really related to it and listened. I want people to know how acceptable it is to use cannabis and how I am carrying on with a regular job, a regular life, and I have an eleven-year old child. It’s not scary and there’s nothing taboo about it. I want people to know we can do this without being “high”. The benefits of CBD are profound, the information about the benefits of CBD are spreading by leaps and bounds every day. I am committed to supporting people to heal.\r\n\r\nIronically, that first Octavia Wellness party has opened a pathway for me to help other people.  I actually have teamed up with the founder, Carrie Tice and for the past year we have worked on creating a great platform to allow for people like me to be able to become trained in cannabis and become Wellness Consultants. Everyone has people in their personal network who are interested in learning about cannabis- and they may not feel comfortable going to dispensaries - we have solved this by making the process personal.  We are passionate about giving people safe and legal access to trusted information and products.  It's quite empowering!\r\n \r\n### Does the stigma attached to cannabis have merit?\r\n\r\nCannabis can be recreational and I have nothing against recreational cannabis. Sometimes having some THC at night helps me sleep. The benefits we get from the whole, healing plant, if we use it responsibly, are endless. Marijuana is a natural anti-inflammatory; it is a better anti-inflammatory than ibuprofen or anything like that. I’ve heard many lectures about the benefits of cannabis for PTSD, cancer, and many other conditions. I believe all illnesses are caused by some form of inflammation, and cannabis works to alleviate that. If we can get rid of the inflammation, have a healthy attitude, healthy diet, and exercise, we can avoid a lot of illnesses. Cannabis can’t do it alone, but neither can any pharmaceuticals. There are so many healing modalities and there should not be any stigma around cannabis because it is a beautiful, healing plant. \r\n\r\nDo you have questions about cannabis and Parkinson's Disease? Though they’re just two out of more than 100 cannabinoids found in cannabis, they’re present in the largest quantities across the different varieties of the cannabis plant. Here’s what you need to know about each compound, so you can choose the marijuana strains and products that will give you the effects you need. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### What Is CBD?\n\nCBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid. Unlike THC, [CBD can be derived from hemp or cannabis](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55f6ea9c65393944020d0000/what-is-hemp-cbd), though it’s often much more potent when it’s derived from cannabis. We now know that CBD lacks the psychoactive effects of THC because it doesn’t bind with the same receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS). \n\nCBD also has the ability to reduce the high caused by THC. For this reason many people, even those who prefer cannabis with a high THC percentage, keep a CBD product like a tincture close by, in case they [consume too much THC and want the intense high to go away quickly](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a5cfdb5c7e0180007a78273/5-tips-to-reduce-the-effects-of-having-too-much-cannabis). \n\n### What Health Conditions Can CBD Help?\n\n* CBD has shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. This makes it great at relieving pain for everything from arthritis to sciatica.\n* Folks who suffer from skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema tend to treat their conditions with CBD-rich topicals such as creams, balms and salves. \n* CBD is an anti-emetic, meaning it can reduce nausea and vomiting. This is great for sufferers of wasting disease and HIV/AIDS. Cancer sufferers who deal with nausea in relation to chemotherapy also turn to CBD to quell this symptom. \n* CBD also has the ability to reduce seizures and muscle convulsion or spasms, making it effective in helping patients with seizures or muscle spasms caused by conditions such as Parkinson’s disease. \n* CBD is successful at promoting healthy bone growth and can help reduce vascular tension and artery blockage. \n* Studies show that CBD can also help reduce blood sugar, making it helpful for patients with diabetes or other conditions that require monitoring blood sugar levels. \n* For anxiety sufferers, CBD has been shown to reduce the condition for people who have general anxiety disorders or conditions such as PTSD. \n\n### What Is THC? \n\nTHC is the most common and well-known cannabinoid found in the marijuana plant. Often associated with its psychoactive properties, THC can be very helpful in different medical applications. THC’s pain-relieving properties make it effective for patients managing their chronic pain.\n\n### What Health Conditions Can THC Help? \n\nBesides chronic pain, THC can also help:\n \n* Ease stomach discomfort through the reduction of nausea and vomiting\n* Stimulate appetite in older patients and those experiencing chemotherapy for cancer treatment\n* Those who suffer from chronic stomach issues such as Crohn’s disease irritable bowel syndrome \n* Reduce muscle spasms, helping patients with conditions such as Parkinson’s disease control excessive muscle movement \n\n### What Role Do Other Marijuana Cannabinoids Play?\n\nCannabis is much more effective in the whole plant as opposed to when one cannabinoid is used in isolation. It’s the interactions taking place among the various cannabinoids—called the [entourage effect](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56d0f3acbbf86b000b0000ae/what-is-the-entourage-effect)—that helps drive positive effects in the human body. \n\nTHC and CBD work in harmony on the endocannabinoid system in the body. For example, having a balance of THC and CBD in a strain of cannabis can allow for the highly successful pain-relieving aspects of THC with less of the psychoactive effect—because non-psychoactive CBD counteracts THC.\n\nThough THC and CBD are the most prominent compounds, many other cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) and cannabichromene (CBC) can provide a range of benefits. Studies have found [THCA to have anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-emetic and antiproliferative properties](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a90bb3ef24d1300077ccb60/how-to-make-the-most-of-non-psychoactive-thca), while CBC appears to be an effective antimicrobial, anti-viral, anti-depressant and analgesic compound.\n\n### What Are Cannabis Terpenes & How Can They Help?\n\nTerpenes—compounds that lend the cannabis plant strains their fragrance and flavor—number well over 100, and interact with the ECS as well. They work in concert with cannabinoids in a wide range of activities—from promoting sleep to elevating mood and providing stress relief.\n\nRELATED: [WHAT ARE TERPENES AND WHAT IS THEIR EFFECT?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56e359576d0ed000080000ba/what-are-terpenes-and-what-is-their-effect)\n\nSince THC and CBD have different effects on the body, it’s important that you have a clear idea of what you want out of consuming marijuana. Then, you can choose the cannabis strain or product that’s right for you, based on the major cannabinoids that it contains. \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Evoxe offers patients a variety of disposable vape pens with the highest quality organic cannabis combined with dynamic blends of essential oils. What we find most interesting about Evoxe is their approach to creating, in the words of Michael Katz, \"an enhanced and directed entourage effect which also enables people to choose the mood they want.\" For instance, their product Engage is a sativa based cannabis vape combined with peppermint, lime, cinnamon and cypress essential oils. It promises to uplift and engage consumers with their proprietary formulation. The other pens they offer are Balance, Deep, Stealth and Balance+. This latest product is a high CBD strain Harley-Tsu combined with an essential oil blend of frankincense, ylang ylang, tangerine and geranium. It's whole flower but at a 20:1 ratio of CBD to THC, it is appropriate for everyday use. But it seems like today people are just discovering them and using them for the first time. Tinctures, alcohol or oil-based cannabis extracts, are becoming some people’s preferred marijuana consumption method because they’re easy to use, don’t involve smoking and provide an accurate dosage. Other reasons people like marijuana tinctures are that they have a long shelf life when stored properly and can be taken sublingually (under the tongue) or mixed into food or drinks. Cannabis tinctures are not only a handy option for a smoke-free consumption method, but tinctures are also discreet and can be taken on the go. \r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\nIn recent years, tinctures have also become a common form of cannabis medication for children with epilepsy or for the elderly who cannot smoke. Cannabis tinctures are easy to make and customize based on your needs. Below is an easy recipe for an alcohol-based marijuana tincture where we use a cannabis strain rich in cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is an anti-inflammatory cannabinoid great for helping treat a host of health conditions. Unlike the other most well-known cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it doesn’t produce psychoactive effects. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [CANNABIS 101: THC VS. CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57a17dc121a3ad00076694fc/cannabis-101-thc-vs-cbd)\r\n\r\n### Ingredients for a High-CBD Cannabis Tincture\r\n\r\n* 1 oz of high-CBD marijuana such as Canna-Tsu, ACDC or Harlequin\r\n* High proof alcohol (such as everclear)\r\n* 1 coffee filter\r\n* 1 air-tight 1 quart mason jar\r\n\r\n### How To Make a High-CBD Cannabis Tincture \r\n\r\n1. Choose your marijuana strain, we recommend Canna-Tsu, a low-THC, high-CBD strain that has good pain management properties without high levels of psychoactivity. \r\n\r\n2. If you’re starting with raw marijuana, you have to [decarboxylate](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56de6bd6c60fd50008000081/decarboxylating-marijuana-why-its-important), or heat, the cannabis in order to convert cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) to CBD. (If starting with cured marijuana skip to step 4).\r\n\r\n3. To decarboxylate your cannabis, you’ll need to do the following: First, set your oven to 245 degrees F while you finely grind the cannabis. You can use a finer, hand-held cheese grinder. Spread the ground marijuana on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and then bake for 60–90 minutes. You’ll know when your CBD has been decarboxylated, because your cannabis will be dry, which will make it crumble easily, and it will be darker than what you started out with. Once you take the cannabis out of the oven, allow it to cool before proceeding.\r\n\r\n4. Mix the marijuana with high-proof alcohol in the jar. You can choose the ratio of your choice depending on how strong you want your tincture. \r\n\r\n5. Close the jar and place it into a cool, dark place and let it sit for 2–3 weeks, shaking the container once a day. \r\n\r\n6. Once ready, filter the tincture through a coffee filter and place into another jar or a dropper bottle for easy use. \r\n\r\n7. Sava offers next day delivery for patients throughout California and is one of the newest collectives gaining a passionate following of enthusiastic medicinal cannabis patients. Andrea is extremely knowledgeable about cannabis and here she shares her Ayurvedic recipe for a CBD tonic/tea.\n\n### The Tea\nBased on the Ayurvedic recipe for “Golden Milk”, this tea combines turmeric, ginger, coconut oil, honey, and CBD to provide relief from inflammation, arthritis, sore muscles, hangover, and a range of other maladies. \n\n### Turmeric\nTurmeric has long been used in South Asia for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. \nOn the Japanese island of Okinawa - where the population has one of the longest average lifespans - turmeric tea is a staple of daily life. In India, turmeric was first used in food and was then discovered to have a range of medicinal benefits - antiseptic, anti-inflammatory detoxifying. It has also been shown to prevent and reverse the effects of Alzheimer's and is currently being studied for its anti-cancer effects. \n\n### Curcumin\nCurcumin, the ingredient in turmeric that makes it yellow and gives it spice, is what science attributes many of its healing properties. In order for your body to absorb the curcumin, it is paired with both a fat and with black pepper. \n\n### Piperine\nPiperine, a compound found in black pepper, has been shown to increase the bioavailability of otherwise hard to absorb curcumin by 2000%. Without the piperine, curcumin is metabolized in the liver and intestinal wall. When I make this tonic, I either add in or leave out black pepper based on how I feel. If I want my liver and intestinal wall to receive the benefits - maybe after a large rich meal or one too many glasses of wine - I leave the pepper out. If I want relief from joint or muscle pain or want my entire body to reap the effects, I add pepper in. Fat also assist with absorption, hence coconut oil which has its own host of benefits. \n\n### Ginger\nGinger, another powerful root with a big reputation, has been shown time and time again to have strong anti-inflammatory properties without the side effects of pharmaceuticalsas well as anti-oxidative and anti-cancer effects (5). It has also long been used to soothe the digestive system. \n\n### Cannabidiol\nCannabidiol, also known as CBD, is an important medicinal cannabinoid that produces no “high.” CBD relieves pain and anxiety, and research has shown it to have antibacterial, anti-convulsive, anti-carcinogenic, anxiolytic, antidepressant, analgesic, antiemetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ischemic, antispasmodic, antipsychotic, anti-insomnia and neuroprotection properties.\n\n### How To\n\nMix all of the ingredients together with a spoonful of honey and you have a delicious health tonic that can be used for specific ailments or as an everyday preventative medicine. \n\nIngredients \n>- ½ to 1 inch of turmeric root (or a tsp of turmeric powder)\n- ½ to 1 inch of ginger root\n- 1 tsp coconut oil\n- 1 cup of your favorite milk (almond or hemp is delicious!)\n- 1 cup of warm water\n- 2 tsp honey\n- Sprinkle of black pepper\n- Drops of high CBD tincture\n\nWarm the milk. Add all other ingredients to a blender. Combine in your favorite mug and enjoy! \n\nAlternately, all ingredients can be blended together cool and served over ice. \n\nThis can be made in a larger batch and store in your refrigerator for several days or you can combine all ingredients, aside from milk and water, into a paste that you keep for up to a week adding to hot water and milk when you want a cup. Adjust the honey, pepper, ginger, and turmeric depending on your flavor preferences - whether you like things spicy or sweet - and drink to good health. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
