It can cause lifelong problems with learning, communication and social interaction. \n\nThough there isn’t a cure for autism spectrum disorder, symptoms are typically managed with a variety of potent medications such as antipsychotics and antidepressants. \n\nBut recent research on connections between ASD and the endocannabinoid system reveals that [cannabidiol (CBD) can improve autism symptoms more effectively than pharmaceuticals can](https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/249591)—and without the risk of severe side effects that often come with the latter.\n\n### What Is Autism Spectrum Disorder?\n\nAutism spectrum disorder is a [condition that arises from abnormal neurological development in the brain](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/autism-spectrum-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20352928). \n\nIn general, ASD affects how people interact with others and with the environment. This disorder is typically diagnosed in early childhood when a child is unable to meet developmental milestones in language and social skills. \n\nSome children may develop normally in their first year or so, but then regress between the ages of 18 and 24 months.\n\nASD symptoms, which fall anywhere on a spectrum from very severe to relatively mild, can commonly include:\n\n* Limited, repetitive behavior patterns, such as rocking, flapping the arms or spinning\n* Impaired communication skills. Some severely autistic children don’t speak at all, while others may speak in a monotone or abnormal rhythm. Most people with ASD have problems participating in conversations or understanding certain words and phrases.\n* Raging behaviors, such as unpredictable outbursts of anger or violence\n* Having a hard time expressing or understanding feelings. People with ASD often have trouble interpreting facial expressions, making eye contact or interacting in social situations.\n* Fixations on certain objects or motions, such as spinning wheels or sparkling lights\n* Problems with touching or being touched. Autistic children often resist being held or cuddled; older people with ASD usually don’t like to be hugged or shake hands\n* Sleep problems such as trouble falling asleep or disturbed circadian rhythms\n\nAlong with these kinds of symptoms, ASD is also associated with other neurological issues, such as:\n\n* Anxiety\n* Depression\n* Obsessive-compulsive disorder\n* Attention deficit disorder\n* Epilepsy\n\nRELATED: [CAN CBD HELP WITH THE SYMPTOMS OF OCD?](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cbd-help-with-the-symptoms-of-ocd/)\n\n### What Causes ASD?\n\nResearchers believe that ASD is due to neurological abnormalities that develop before birth. But the cause of these abnormalities is still unclear.\n\nThere’s no genetic, brain imaging or electrophysiological test that can identify a specific marker for the disorder. ASD is usually diagnosed by observations about a child’s behavior and skills. \n\nStill, some contributing factors are known. There appears to be a genetic component, meaning a child runs a greater risk of developing ASD if someone else in the immediate family has it. \n\nCertain environmental factors can also raise the risk of ASD. Prenatal exposure to toxins and chemicals can affect neurological connections in the developing brain. These factors can also account for the varied symptoms of ASD.\n\nSince the causes of ASD aren’t entirely clear, treatment has focused on relieving specific symptoms with a range of medications, including:\n\n* Antipsychotics\n* Antidepressants\n* Hypnotic drugs \n\nBut in many cases, these medications don’t work. And even if they do, they can cause severe side effects like:\n\n* Heart arrhythmia\n* Seizures\n* Suicidal thoughts\n\n### Can CBD Relieve Autism Symptoms?\n\nResearch shows that CBD, an abundant cannabis compound that doesn’t make consumers feel high like cannabis can, [may relieve symptoms of many disorders that occur along with ASD, including](https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-37570-y):\n\n* Anxiety\n* Depression\n* Epilepsy\n* Obsessive-compulsive disorder\n* Attention deficit disorder\n\nRelatively few studies have explored the connection between CBD and ASD, largely because ASD occurs in early childhood, and researchers are reluctant to conduct cannabis-related studies that involve children. \n\nBut a groundbreaking 2017 study in Israel shows that high concentrations of CBD can have a powerful effect on ASD symptoms.\n\nThis research, conducted at Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Hospital, was inspired by studies on the use of CBD for children with severe forms of epilepsy who don’t respond to other treatments. These studies led to the development of the FDA-approved medication Epidiolex, a CBD-based drug created by Britain’s GW Pharmaceuticals specifically for these rare childhood epilepsies. \n\nBecause epilepsy occurs with autistic individuals at far higher rates than it does in the general population, researchers in Jerusalem decided to find out whether CBD may also help relieve symptoms of ASD. \n\nTheir study, published in the journal _Neurology_, revealed that after treating 60 autistic children with high concentrations of CBD for seven months:\n\n* 80% of participants experienced a decrease in problematic behaviors.\n* Half of the children exhibited improved communication skills.\n* 40% experienced less anxiety.\n\n### The Science Behind How CBD Helps Ease Autism Symptoms\n\nCBD can relieve some of the most problematic symptoms of ASD, [because of its effects on the body’s endocannabinoid system](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13311-015-0371-9). This extensive network of receptors occurs throughout the body’s tissues and organs, and it plays a major role in regulating many essential processes related to:\n\n* Mood\n* Pleasure and reward\n* Concentration\n* Sleep \n* Appetite \n\n[Disruptions in these processes seem to be responsible for many of the common symptoms of ASD](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/04/130411123852.htm), even though the root cause may be unclear.\n\nGlutamate and GABA are essential neurotransmitters that normally work in balance with each other. Glutamate is a very abundant chemical that activates, or excites, signaling between brain cells. Too much glutamate overstimulates brain signaling, causing:\n\n* Irritability\n* Anger \n* Problems with processing information, memory and attention \n\nOn the other hand, GABA is inhibitory; it blocks glutamate signaling and damps down the excitation, invoking calm and a positive mood.\n\nResearchers believe that ASD is associated with an imbalance in these two signaling systems. And it turns out a number of studies have shown that CBD can help restore a balance between glutamate signaling and GABA production. \n\nThis explains why CBD can help with anxiety, depression and other mood disorders—and why it can help:\n\n* Calm agitation\n* Reduce outbursts of anger\n* Manage other symptoms of ASD\n\nCBD can also play an important role in balancing brain signaling related to making social connections. \n\nOxytocin and vasopressin are neurotransmitters released in activities related to:\n\n* Social connections\n* Promoting feelings of warmth, affection and pleasure \n\nBut research suggests that in people with ASD, these signaling systems are also dysfunctional. This makes it hard for those with ASD to:\n\n* Interact with others\n* Feel empathy\n* Read facial expressions and body language \n\nCBD appears to boost the release of oxytocin and vasopressin. This can help reduce autism’s repetitive behaviors and improve social interactions.\n\nOver the past 30 years, diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder worldwide have tripled. Scientists are still working on understanding the causes of this mysterious disorder. But recent research shows that CBD can relieve many of its symptoms, without the risks and side effects of typically prescribed pharmaceuticals.\n\nPhoto credit: Roman Yanushevsky/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? It affects over four million adults, comprising mostly women. The condition is most often associated with large-scale body pain in muscles, tissues and tendons. People describe fibromyalgia pain as ranging from a dull ache on a good day to pain that becomes extremely severe, affecting all aspects of life.\n\nThere’s growing evidence that cannabidiol (CBD), one of the hundreds of chemical compounds found in cannabis and hemp may help bolster the weakened endocannabinoid systems (ECS) of fibromyalgia sufferers.\n\nHow can it do this? By addressing an associated condition known as clinical endocannabinoid deficiency (CED). \n\n### What Is Fibromyalgia? \n\nThe Centers for Disease Control describe fibromyalgia as “[a condition that causes widespread pain all over the body](https://www.cdc.gov/arthritis/basics/fibromyalgia.htm).” \n\nThe [causes of fibromyalgia](https://med.stanford.edu/pain/about-chronic-pain/fibromyalgia.html) remain elusive to researchers. For years, suffering patients have begged doctors to develop a clear diagnosis. No specific diagnostic tools have conclusively identified why people develop the condition. Fibromyalgia seems to be related to stress, and people with disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis appear to be at greater risk of developing it. \n\nFolks often report [fibromyalgia pain that often targets over a dozen very specific trigger points](https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/medicine-and-dentistry/fibromyalgia) on the body, including areas like:\n\n* Near the second rib space\n* The upper quadrants of the glutes \n* The inner fat pad of the knee \n\nSleep disturbances and intestinal imbalances are common. One of the most vexing aspects of fibromyalgia is that a sufferer’s sensitivity to pain is often heightened as compared to healthy people. Once diagnosed, standard treatment options are few and far between.\n\n### What Is Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency?\n\nAs many cannabis consumers may already know, the body’s ECS is a relatively recent area of study for scientists and researchers. The ECS, with receptors located throughout the body, is responsible for ensuring healthy signaling between those receptors and your body’s endocannabinoids—cannabinoids the body itself makes. \n\nThe “lock and key” relationship between the receptors and endocannabinoids results in neurotransmission—communication at the cellular level that’s essential to how your body deals with and handles nearly every function, such as:\n\n* Pain\n* Inflammation\n* Sleep\n* Appetite\n* Memory\n\nScientists know that deficiencies in certain neurotransmitters can make a person more susceptible to Alzheimer’s disease or depression. More recently, scientists have begun to focus on whether [endocannabinoid deficiencies play a role in disease processes](https://wholefoodsmagazine.com/supplements/features-supplements/phytocannabinoids-25-things-to-know-now/). \n\nAccording to a 2016 study, the lack of an endocannabinoid “tone,” or what’s defined as [clinical endocannabinoid deficiency, is seen in people with](https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/full/10.1089/can.2016.0009):\n\n* Fibromyalgia\n* Migraines \n* Irritable bowel syndrome\n\nRELATED: [CBD MAY HELP RELIVE IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME](https://hellomd.com/articles/cbd-may-help-relieve-irritable-bowel-syndrome/)\n\nThe exciting news is that folks can ease some of the symptoms of these conditions by supplementing their ECS with cannabis.\n\n### Can Cannabis Improve Fibromyalgia Symptoms? \n\nThere are few single studies specifically targeting fibromyalgia sufferers who are cannabis consumers. However, in a 2011 study, the majority of participants found that their [fibromyalgia symptoms became measurably more tolerable](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0018440) after taking cannabis. This bolsters the theory that once the body’s endocannabinoid deficiencies are addressed, pain and inflammation tend to decrease. \n\nNot only did participants feel their pain symptoms decreased, but they also noted improvements in their quality of life.\n\nConversely, a 2016 study on fibromyalgia patients found that [Nabilone, a synthetic form of cannabis, had little to no effect on patient’s pain levels](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/321501.php).\n\n### CBD May Help With Pain & Reduce Endocannabinoid Deficiencies\n\nWhat wide-ranging cannabis pain studies seem to agree on is that cannabis helps with inflammation and pain—whether the pain comes from a car accident or an autoimmune disorder. \n\nNot everyone can tolerate the psychoactive effects of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). But fortunately, the ECS responds favorably to CBD, the cannabinoid that doesn’t make you feel high like THC can. \n\nA 2018 study from Canada’s McGill University found that the [low doses of CBD they gave to animals effectively decreased both pain and anxiety](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/10/181024163625.htm). \n\n\"Our findings elucidate the mechanism of action of CBD and show that it can be used as medicine without the dangerous side effects of the THC,\" notes Dr. Gabriella Gobbi, Professor of Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. \n\nThis landmark study indicates that it’s possible for those wanting to address pain and endocannabinoid deficiencies to do so with CBD, bypassing some of the side effects associated with THC.\n\n### Balancing Your Endocannabinoid System With CBD\n\nThe wonderful news about CBD is that when you buy it from reputable sources, it’s unlikely to produce any side effects or interact unfavorably with other medications. \n\nThe [mainstreaming of CBD](https://www.consumerreports.org/cbd/cbd-goes-mainstream/) means that products are undergoing more rigorous testing. And for those living in states where cannabis is already legal, CBD products have undergone tests that are far stricter than those imposed on the supplement industry. \n\nEven the Arthritis Foundation has created [protocols for those with fibromyalgia who wish to try CBD](https://www.arthritis.org/living-with-arthritis/treatments/natural/supplements-herbs/cannabidiol-oil.php). This helpful guide includes common-sense recommendations, particularly for first-time medical cannabis patients.\n\n[Anecdotal evidence from grateful CBD consumers](https://www.phillyvoice.com/does-cbd-work-benefits-cannabidiol-oil-philly-marijuana/) continues to drive the conversation about the health benefits of taking CBD to help address complex conditions like fibromyalgia.\n\nThe media and researchers are completely correct to note that “more studies are needed.” But there are virtually no studies that point to any danger or risk in trying out a CBD regime to balance your endocannabinoid system, and thus, improve your overall health and well-being. \n\n\n### Tips for Fibromyalgia Sufferers Who Are New to CBD \n\nIf you’re considering taking CBD for the first time, here are a few pointers to keep in mind:\n\n* Consult with your doctor or a cannabis-friendly health practitioner before you take anything.\n* Buy your medicine from a reputable source. Don’t be afraid to ask where the hemp was grown or for lab tests to make sure the product is as advertised. \n* Avoid buying CBD from the drugstore, the black market or even online retailers, like Amazon, that don’t specialize in cannabis.\n* Enlist the support of the online community, a dispensary/delivery service employee or other trusted expert to answer questions and help you with your purchases.\n* Start with a small dose. \n* When first trying CBD, take it in the evening at home, in case it makes you feel drowsy or relaxed.\n* Keep a journal and record your observations.\n* Feel free to increase your dose if you feel no positive effects. \n* It will take some time to balance your ECS with CBD, so be patient and take a CBD product regularly for at least three or four weeks before evaluating its efficacy. \n* Try several types of consumption methods to find the best one for you:\n * A [CBD topical cream](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Topicals)\n for sore joints\n * A [CBD edible](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Edibles)\n product for sleep\n * A [CBD tincture](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Tinctures) for quicker-acting pain relief\n\nPhoto credit: loreanto/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? We’ve got one that’s as easy to make as it is delicious: zoodles with CBD-infused alfredo sauce. \n\nWhen I was a kid, I used to love ordering chicken Alfredo at Italian restaurants. The smooth, cheesy sauce and pasta felt like a fancy mac and cheese that I never got tired of eating. And sometimes I still really crave that tasty dish. \n\nBut these days, I try to avoid eating the big dose of carbohydrates that comes with any pasta dish. That’s why I love this healthier take on the classic chicken Alfredo. Instead of all those carbs, it swaps in healthy zucchini noodles—also known as zoodles. \n\nZucchini is an ideal pasta substitute, because it can handle any kind of pasta sauce. Plus, zucchini:\n\n* Has a high antioxidant content\n* Is rich in fiber\n* May support eye health \n\nYou also can leave the chicken out if you want to make this dish vegetarian or swap the chicken out for tofu or your protein of choice. \n\nThe Alfredo sauce is what holds this recipe together, and is a nod to the traditional chicken Alfredo dish. I use the classic ingredients:\n\n* Parmesan cheese\n* Cream\n* Butter\n* Garlic\n* Parsley \n\nAlfredo sauce is high in fat, so it sometimes gets a bad rap as an unhealthy choice. But high fat doesn’t always equal unhealthy. Fat actually helps you better metabolize CBD. Cannabis edibles need to contain fat for your body to be able to absorb and use a greater percentage of the cannabinoids you ingest. \n\nRELATED: [3 MODERN ADVANCES THAT MAKE CBD MORE EFFECTIVE](https://www.hellolift.com/health-wellness/5ce45587c56378689f84a40c/3-modern-advances-that-make-cbd-more-effective)\n\nIf you’re following a high-fat diet, like the keto diet, but want to add CBD to your daily routine, this recipe is the perfect way to get started. \n\n### Ingredients for Decadent CBD-Infused Alfredo Sauce Over Zoodles:\n\nServes 2* \n\n* 1/2 cup butter\n* 1 cup heavy whipping cream\n* 2 cups Parmesan cheese, shredded\n* 1 tsp garlic, minced\n* 1 large zucchini (or 2 small to medium zucchinis), spiralized** \n* 2 droppers of the CBD tincture of your choice\n* 1/4 cup parsley, chopped (Substitute with basil if you prefer.)\n* Salt and pepper to taste\n\n**Optional:**\n* 2 chicken breasts\n\n*You can easily double or triple this recipe, if you’re cooking for a larger group.\n\n**To make the zoodles, your best option is to use a spiralizer. I like to use the widest noodle option on my spiralizer, because it does a great job of holding the sauce. If you don’t have a spiralizer, don’t worry. You can also make zoodles using a vegetable peeler. Just make long straight cuts with the peeler to creat zucchini strips. Then, cut any particularly wide pieces lengthwise to the size you’d like. \n\n![CBD-infused alfredo sauce over zoodles](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-b8a179e6-d296-41ad-b4cd-858f053be1eb/original.png)\n\n### How to Make Decadent CBD-Infused Alfredo Sauce Over Zoodles\n\n1. If you’re using chicken in this recipe, it’s best to start by cooking the chicken so that it’s ready when the rest of your food is. Set up a frying pan or skillet on a medium-high heat, add a little butter or oil, and cook the chicken for 5–7 minutes on each side. When done, the chicken should be white, fully cooked on the inside and golden on the outside. Set aside to rest.\n2. While your chicken is cooking, make the zoodles. Then, evenly divide them into two serving bowls. \n3. To make the CBD-infused Alfredo sauce, add the butter to the sauce pan and melt over medium heat. Add the garlic, parsley and heavy cream, and bring to a low simmer. Let simmer for about 30 seconds. \n5. Turn off the heat and whisk in 1 1/2 cups of the shredded Parmesan cheese. Whisk until the cheese has fully melted, and you have a smooth and creamy sauce. Add your CBD tincture here. Season with salt and pepper to taste. \n6. If your dish includes chicken, take your cooked chicken breasts and cut them into bite-sized cubes. Divide the chicken breast cubes between the two serving bowls, laying them on top of the zoodles. \n7. Finally, pour the hot CBD-infused Alfredo sauce over the two bowls of zoodles, making sure to pour evenly so that your zoodles are entirely covered. This is an important step, because the raw zoodles will soften and slightly cook in the sauce. \n8. Sprinkle the remaining Parmesan on top of each dish. Serve immediately. \n\nPhoto credit: Wiktory/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? The statistics themselves are, quite frankly, depressing: One in five American adults struggles with some form of mental illness. \n\nAnxiety and depression—two common mental health disorders—can greatly damage the state of our physical and emotional well-being. The World Health Organization ranks [depression as the single largest cause of disability worldwide](https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/254610/WHO-MSD-MER-2017.2-eng.pdf;jsessionid=DC8F3A8204A9DFAE7A9F944BA2D9BCCE?sequence=1), while anxiety disorders are ranked sixth.\n\nEven low-level depression and anxiety can leave us nominally functioning, while still taking a toll even if no one else sees it.\n\nWhile more stringent research needs to be done, there’s growing evidence suggesting that cannabidiol (CBD) can play an effective role in addressing mental health issues, such as:\n\n* Depression\n* Anxiety\n* Stress\n* PTSD\n* Feelings of isolation\n* Mood swings \n* Psychosis\n\n### Traditional Treatments for Anxiety & Depression\n\nDoctors often prescribe pharmaceutical drugs to treat anxiety and depression. These drugs can carry side effects, including:\n\n* Drowsiness\n* Agitation\n* Insomnia\n* Sexual dysfunction\n* Headaches\n \nAnd these medications, such as benzodiazepines, can also be addictive and may lead to serious substance abuse issues. This is why so many people are now looking for a more natural approach to addressing their mental health issues and improving their emotional well-being. \n\nEnter CBD. \n\n### CBD Helps Retain Our Bliss Molecules\n\nAn article in _Psychology Today_ by naturopathic doctor Peter Bongiorno points out that CBD oil, which doesn’t make consumers feel high like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can, is a natural, plant-based oil laden with cannabinoids.\n\nSome cannabinoids, called phytocannabinoids, come from plants. Meanwhile, our bodies naturally produce other cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids.\n\nHe explains, “[[Endo]cannabinoids are ‘feel good’ molecules naturally made by the body](https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/inner-source/201901/cbd-oil-mental-health-should-you-take-it-too) when we are feeling relaxed and secure or involved in something that makes us happy, like hugging someone we care about or sitting down to a meal we are looking forward to. \n\n“Cannabinoids are also released when we sleep well and exercise. Cannabinoids bind to little docking stations in our bodies called cannabinoid receptors that help stimulate those feel good responses. Discovered in 1992, the main cannabinoid molecule is called anandamide, which is translated from the Sanskrit as ‘bliss molecule.’”\n\nCannabinoids play a strong role in keeping our bodies balanced. Research suggests that CBD helps prevent the breakdown of anandamide in our bodies, leaving us with more of the bliss molecule and, as a result, feeling happier.\n\n### Animal Studies Show CBD May Have Antidepressant Properties\n\nThe Depression Alliance explains that when cannabinoids bind to certain receptors, they can boost the activity of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that’s been shown to uplift mood and reduce stress levels. [CBD specifically has been shown to amplify serotonin’s effects](https://www.depressionalliance.org/cbd-oil/), because it boosts the activity of the receptors that serotonin binds to. \n\nRELATED: [HOW CBD CAN RELIEVE SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-relieve-symptoms-of-depression/)\n\nResearch from 2014 indicates that [CBD interacts positively with serotonin receptors in the brain](https://cbd-b.be/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/2014-Antidepressant-Like-and-Anxiolytic-Like-Effects-of-Cannabidiol.pdf), helping keep serotonin levels balanced— an important therapy for people suffering from depression.\n\nAnother study, this one from 2018, suggests that [CBD holds promise as a quick-acting antidepressant](https://www.drperlmutter.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/CBD-BDNF.pdf). The study also found that CBD produced long-lasting anti-depressant effects. \n\nHowever, it should be noted that these are both animal studies, and so we really need human trials to verify their findings.\n\n### Human Studies Confirm CBD Can Help Ease Anxiety\n\nThere are human studies showing that CBD may be useful in treating panic disorders, which affect about 5% of the world’s population. Panic disorders are characterized by sudden, recurring panic attacks. _Medical News Today_ points out that [a 2017 review found “positive results” for the benefits of CBD in helping with anxiety issues](https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324846.php). \n\nOne study in the review showed that “a single dose of 300 mg of CBD caused a notable decrease in anxiety levels after a simulated public speaking test.” Meanwhile, another study found that “600 mg of CBD caused a significant reduction of anxiety measures in people with social anxiety disorder.” It should be noted that these amounts of CBD are well over a typical single dose of the cannabinoid. \n\n### CBD Can Be Part of a Balanced Approach to Coping With Mental Health Issues\n\nWhile CBD shows promise in helping us achieve emotional well-being, Peter Bongiorno in _Psychology Today_ reminds us that it isn’t a cure-all but an important tool in a well-balanced approach: \n\n“I always recommend not simply taking supplements for anxiety, but making dietary and lifestyle changes, and adopting stress-relieving rituals and therapies to bring full healing to your body. Also, visit with your doctor on a regular basis or when issues pop up. While CBD is a very good supplement, I find its power is enhanced when combined with natural modifications.”\n\nPhoto credit: Peera_stockfoto/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? There are simply too many variables—how you’re ingesting CBD and what your endocannabinoid system is like are just a couple of factors that impact the results of your personal experience with CBD. \n\nBut another factor that we don’t often think about is CBD’s bioavailability—or rather, how much CBD your body is able to access once you’ve consumed it. Every consumption method has a different bioavailability. \n\nFor example, vaping CBD tends to be the most efficient, because the vapor goes directly to your lungs and then into your bloodstream. It’s estimated that the bioavailability of inhaled CBD is somewhere around 56%. \n\nBut inhalation has its drawbacks—effects tend to come on more quickly, but they also fade more quickly as well. And for some folks, inhalation carries some health concerns.\n\nFor those concerned about lung health, orally ingesting CBD—whether via capsule or edible—is often a preferred method of consumption. But this method has the lowest bioavailability at about 4–12%. \n\nThis is because when you eat CBD, it has to make its way through your digestive system, and a lot of it gets broken down in the digestive process. So, even if you ingest CBD, only a small fraction of it will be used by your body. This means you’ll have to take much more CBD than you actually need to get the effects you want. \n\nOf course, with CBD’s ever-growing popularity, this may start to change. Companies are aware of the drawbacks of oral ingestion, and they’re working on ways to make oral CBD more bioavailable. And a lot of the methods being studied are ones that already exist in the pharmaceutical industry. \n\n### 1. Encasing CBD in Liposomes May Increase Its Bioavailability \n\nLiposomes are already used in medicine to protect drugs as they pass through your digestive system. These tiny, spherical bubbles are made from fats called phospholipids. \n\nPhospholipids are made up of two parts: a head that’s attracted to water and a tail that repels water. When many phospholipids come into contact with water, the heads and tails turn away from each other, forming what’s called a bilayer. This bilayer is what makes up the outside of a liposome bubble—and it’s what protects the precious medicine within. \n\nLiposomes have the ability to fully encapsulate and transport various medicines to specific tissues without being broken down by the digestive process. This quality allows substances transported by liposomes to have a higher bioavailability. \n\nAlthough there isn’t any research specifically on CBD and liposomes, there’s plenty that speaks to the efficiency of using liposomes to transport hydrophobic molecules—molecules, like CBD, that tend to repel water. \n\nBecause liposomes can enclose and protect medicines as they pass through your digestive system, if you were to take CBD that’s encapsulated by liposomes, you’d theoretically need less CBD per dose to get similar effects than if you were to take CBD on its own. \n\nIf you think liposomes would be a good addition to your CBD regimen, don’t get ahead of yourself. Encasing CBD in liposomes isn’t something you can do at home.\n\nLuckily, some CBD companies are now starting to use liposomes. Elixinol currently makes a [Hemp Oil Liposome spray](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57aaed02f1740001522fd3/hemp-oil-liposome) that you can purchase on HelloMD. \n\nRELATED: [LIPOSOMES: A WAY TO MAKE CBD MORE EFFECTIVE](https://hellomd.com/articles/liposomes-a-way-to-make-cbd-more-effective/)\n\n### 2. Nanoemulsion Technology Could Improve CBD Delivery \n\nNanoemulsion is similarly related but different from the use of liposomes. Both technologies involve methods that try to make hydrophobic medicines compatible with water at the nano level. \n\nNanoemulsion was developed from nanotechnology, a branch of technology that works with matter that’s the size of a nanometer. To give you an idea of the scale of this technology, one nanometer is one billionth of a meter. \n\nCompanies are already experimenting with nanoemulsion to reduce the time it takes for cannabis edibles to take effect. But this type of technology also has other benefits—like making cannabinoids such as CBD more bioavailable. \n\nTo create a nanoemulsion, you combine: \n\n* Water\n* Oil\n* The medicine in question \n* A compound to stabilize the mixture\n\nBecause nanoemulsions are so small, they can easily penetrate tissues in the body. What this means is that medication can be delivered quickly and at a full dose, because its bypassing the digestive system and other bodily processes. \n\nResearchers are taking nanoemulsions one step further with something called self-emulsifying drug delivery technology (SEDDS). Instead of specially mixing and handling a medicine to create an emulsion, this process happens inside the gastrointestinal tract. \n\nIn SEDDs technology, an oil and water emulsion is formed with the medicine at the center when all of the necessary ingredients enter a certain part of the gastrointestinal tract. \n\nResearchers recently tested this technology with a CBD and THC mixture in 14 healthy human volunteers and [found it to be more effective than that of a Sativex](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0022354917308900), a sublingual cannabis spray currently available in the U.K. \n\nSince this technology is so new, it’s still being tested—not only for cannabinoids, but for other medicines as well. Because it’s so promising, we’ll likely hear more about it in the future. \n\n### 3. Adding Fluoride to a CBD Molecule Can Increase Its Efficacy \n\nAnother method of upping CBD’s bioavailability is through a process called fluorination. Fluorine is the most reactive of all of the elements in the periodic table. It can form a bond with carbon that’s hard to break down—even for the enzymes in your gut. This property makes fluorine useful in the medical world.\n\nDuring fluorination, a fluoride ion is attached to a carbon atom in a drug’s molecular structure. Adding fluoride to pharmaceuticals is a common practice—about 20% of all commercialized drugs contain fluoride. \n\nThere are lots of reasons why pharmaceutical companies add fluoride to their products. This process can: \n\n* Slow the metabolism of a drug—meaning it takes more time for the drug to be broken down in the body, therefore giving it more time to work\n* Enhance a molecule’s ability to bind to certain receptors \n* Make the drug easier to dissolve in fats, thereby increasing its bioavailability\n\nOne company, Phytecs, is already working on fluorinating CBD and testing the resulting compounds for efficacy. So far, it’s made three different versions of fluorinated CBD (F-CBDs) and tested them in animal models. \n\nResearchers have found that the [F-CBDs were more effective in treating animal models of depression, anxiety, pain and skin diseases than CBD was alone](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0158779). \n\nWhile F-CBDs are a long way from becoming available, they offer a lot of promise and are easily patentable. So, we’re sure to hear more about this research in the future. \n\nWhen we look at all that’s currently being done to improve the delivery of CBD and other cannabinoids, it’s clear that cannabinoid medicine is still in its infancy. For now, we’ll continue to take CBD in tinctures, topicals and vape form. Just burn more calories than you consume.\n\nIf you’ve ever tried to lose weight before, you know it’s not that simple. Between this obvious fact and the pursuit of your ideal body weight, there are a million diets and exercise plans, boatloads of grief over poor body image, and a merry-go-around of weight loss and weight gain that many of us can never seem to escape.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nSo, what’s the best diet for losing weight? Experts say it’s one that works for your particular body type, metabolism and needs. Preferably one that’s healthy and easy to maintain.\n\nYou may want to consider speaking to a nutritionist or wellness coach to help you develop a plan that works best for you. And when creating that plan, you may also want to incorporate the appetite-reducing benefits of marijuana generally and cannabidiol (CBD) in particular. \n \nCannabis—and CBD in particular—can help folks lose weight? So it seems. There are some promising studies and lots of anecdotal evidence about the efficacy of CBD for weight loss. According to three female friends experimenting with CBD for appetite reduction: \n\n“[We squeezed a few drops of CBD-infused oil under our tongues and waited. An hour later, at the time we’d planned to have dinner, we noticed we weren’t especially hungry](https://www.huffpost.com/entry/can-cbd-help-you-lose-weight_b_58ae853ce4b0ea6ee3d035e6?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAACEEKxfw9XEUp6NYF3zJ4Hnt7kaJBS1ypd6zdbRh9tJRbPbhf0bXDadWYSSAh9AeZW-yS5c0yBCzWqcKeD3bU14iCLK7seShfs2Xhr9nrBFGpHubkaHhrHYq2VhKkQ_95TycluD-c4vKMujJKd6_8HUoxlD0vM3CkFH13L-Lye7X). All thoughts of food had been swept away. If this effect were widely known, Tina said, ‘cannabis would be legal in 20 minutes.’”\n\n### Quelling Food Cravings With Cannabis\n\nOf course, taking any form of cannabis for weight loss flies in the face of popular perception. This is because marijuana is often times associated with increasing food cravings. Also, because the plant has been used medically to help people put on weight when, say, faced with the poor appetite that may come with cancer treatments. \n\nTetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive cannabinoid, works on the part of the brain that controls hunger and boosts dopamine, the feel-good brain chemical, helping increase your pleasure from eating. \n\nEven so, consuming marijuana doesn’t necessarily equate to weight gain. “Studies indicate that [regular heavy cannabis users tend to be leaner than age- and gender-matched groups of nonusers](https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/wellness/marijuana-gives-you-the-munchies-what-about-cbd/2019/01/07/7a793076-0ebc-11e9-8938-5898adc28fa2_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.ccd9b2884130),” says George Kunos, scientific director at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in the National Institutes of Health. \n\nIt seems that high doses of THC could serve to suppress the number of CB1 receptors that are part of the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a network of receptors found throughout the body, and its receptors are split into two types: CB1 and CB2. Researchers have found that the CB1 receptor is often linked to obesity.\n\nThere’s also a lesser-known cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), which is showing promise as an appetite suppressant. However, since THCV is only present in small quantities in cannabis plants, it’s difficult to extract and process into commercial quantities.\n\nRELATED CONTENT: [PSYCHOACTIVE THCV: THE CANNABINOID THAT KILLS YOUR APPETITE](https://hellomd.com/articles/psychoactive-thcv-the-cannabinoid-that-kills-your-appetite/)\n\nThis is where CBD comes in. It doesn’t directly activate the CB1 receptors, and so doesn’t bring on the munchies like THC can. And while more research is required, there are tantalizing suggestions that CBD may serve as an appetite suppressant that could come into wider use.\n\n### The Evidence for CBD in Promoting Weight Loss\n\nLike much of the cannabis research out there, [assessing CBD’s hunger-killing capabilities begins with rats](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/cbd-oil-for-weight-loss#weight-loss). One study showed that rodents injected with CBD experienced significant weight loss. And in another study, CBD reduced appetite in rats more than that of other cannabinoids, including cannabigerol (CBG) and cannabinol (CBN).\n\nCBD may also play a role in converting white fat to brown fat. While white fat is associated with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes and heart disease, brown fat actually generates heat by burning calories. \n\nA 2016 study suggests that [CBD wears a number of different hats when interacting with fat in your body](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27067870)—converting white fat to brown and stimulating the body to break down fats more effectively. \n\nThen there’s the 2018 “Role of Cannabinoids in Obesity” study, published in the _International Journal of Molecular Sciences_, which [documents CBD’s role in the browning of fat cells and makes the connection to burning calories](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6163475/).\n\n### CBD as Part of a Sensible Weight Loss Regime\n\nSo, is CBD a miracle weight-loss solution? Probably not. Miracle cures are few and far between. But, with more in-depth human research, it may turn out that CBD does have a role to play as a useful tool in a larger, well-thought out diet and exercise plan.\n\nAs the Mayo Clinic points out:\n\n“Hundreds of fad diets, weight-loss programs and outright scams promise quick and easy weight loss. However, the foundation of successful weight loss remains a healthy, calorie-controlled diet combined with increased physical activity. [For successful, long-term weight loss, you must make permanent changes in your lifestyle and health habits](https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/in-depth/weight-loss/art-20047752).”\n\nSuch lifestyle changes include:\n\n* Making a long-term commitment to weight loss\n* Finding the right motivation\n* Setting realistic goals\n* Eating healthier foods\n* Staying active\n* Changing your perspective\n\nThe last point may involve a shift from hating the way you look and wanting a fast change to being more accepting of who you are and your appearance. Try simple and achievable steps to commit to a healthier lifestyle—including adding CBD to your daily routine—plus being kind to yourself when you stumble.\n\nPhoto credit: Tropical studio/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. That’s when I decide to put aside the edibles and make a “drinkable” instead. [CBD-infused drinks](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/4-cannabis-drink-products-perfect-for-summer) can come in a million different forms, but since they only require mixing a drink, they take just a few minutes to put together. \n\nMy favorite drinkable recipe is my CBD mango spritzers. These fresh, sparkling, and tropical drinks are perfect for any celebration but are also great for a quick self-care break whenever you need one. If your day is getting stressful, why not take a pause and enjoy a drink that’s designed to relax your body and mind?\n\nThe ingredients are simple:\n\n- CBD\n- Mango juice\n- Ice\n- Sparkling water\n- Lime\n\nThough the recipe is simple, the result is pure magic. Sweet, light, and full of bright flavors, this spritzer may transport your mind to an island paradise. But while simple and flavorful, these ingredients are also **medicinally powerful**. \n\nThe base of this recipe is the vitamin C-rich [mango juice](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/mango#immunity), which provides all of the sweetness you need, along with a wide range of nutrients, healthy digestive enzymes, and antioxidants. \n\nOf course, mango juice is more than just a healthy sweetener. Mango also contains **[myrcene](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-myrcene)**, a therapeutically active terpene that’s also found in cannabis. Myrcene is known for its sedative and muscle-relaxing effects when taken alone, so it’s a great way to add some extra stress relief to your drink. \n\n![Hello4-min (32).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_32_36fca9b7f1.png)\n\n[Myrcene is also noted as a terpene that works synergistically with CBD](https://hellomd.com/articles/terpene-and-cannabinoid-combos-that-boost-cannabiss-effects/). This means that when the two are consumed together, they offer benefits that are different or greater than what you could experience with either one on its own. \n\nWhen you take myrcene and CBD together, they can impart increased [pain relief](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/3-popular-questions-about-cbd-and-chronic-pain-answered) and a further reduction in inflammation. Some studies even suggest that they can help fight off cravings for addictive substances.\n\nThe [limes](https://www.healthline.com/health/food-nutrition/lime-water-benefits) in this recipe also offer health benefits, with a variety of immune-boosting ingredients like vitamin C. Plus, limes also carry a synergistic terpene: limonene. [Research suggests that this terpene can help fight anxiety when taken in combination with CBD](https://bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/j.1476-5381.2011.01238.x), so it should add to the relaxing effects of the drink. \n\nDelicious, easy, relaxing, healthy, and no hangover the next day. What are you waiting for? Try the recipe yourself and give yourself a little TLC. \n\n![Hello3-min (35).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_35_89474bd1a4.png)\n\n### Ingredients for CBD Mango Spritzers\n\nServes 1\n\n- Ice cubes\n- 3 tbsp mango juice, chilled and well shaken\n- 1/2 cup chilled sparkling water \n- 1 fresh lime \n- 1 dose CBD tincture* \n\n*Everyone is different when it comes to dosing, so use your best judgment on dosing based on your previous experiences with CBD. If you aren’t sure about dosing, start low. A *good starting point is 5 mg*.\n\n### How to Make CBD Mango Spritzers \n\n- 1.) Put a few ice cubes in your drinking glass. (I like to use a champagne flute, but any glass will do.) \n- 2.) Slice your lime in half, and then cut a thin slice of the lime. Cut a slit in the slice from the center out so that it can sit on the rim of the glass. \n- 3.) Spritz a tiny bit of juice on the ice with the remaining lime to taste. \n- 4.) Add the CBD tincture, followed by the mango juice. Then pour the sparkling water on top. Use a spoon or drink stirrer to mix together. Add a lime slice to rim. Serve immediately. \n\n![Hello2-min (41).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_41_8204f3e26e.png)\n\nIf you’re multiplying this recipe, be sure to mix up a single serving in its individual glass rather than making one big batch. Because the recipe uses sparkling water, it’s difficult to shake up a large batch and ensure it stays evenly mixed. \n\nInstead, get all of the ingredients together and pour each drink individually. But not just any food. Something that can help repair the muscles that have just gone through the wringer. \n\nWhether you’re working out to achieve the perfect body for summer or simply aiming to get healthier, your success is all about making the right decisions to help you develop the habits of a healthy lifestyle. \n\nOne of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen with many of my nutrition clients over the years was the absence of a post-workout meal. When you beat yourself up in the gym and then don’t feed your body the proper nutrition after a workout, it defeats the purpose of your goals. \n\nIt’s very important to consume a healthy meal after a workout to help repair and build your body. And in this crazy, fast-paced society, you’re probably like me, and prefer to prepare something that’s simple and delicious, right? That’s where this smoothie comes in.\n\nI’m sharing a recipe for one of my favorite smoothies, because it’s simple and delicious, and the perfect post-workout meal on the go. This recipe features healthful ingredients like pineapple, spinach and CBD oil to help replenish nutrients as well as aid your body in its recovery. \n\nI used a nonflavored CBD oil for this recipe. But I encourage you to get creative and try using other [CBD oil flavors](https://hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/can-i-flavor-my-tincture-with-vanilla-peppermint-or-lemon-extract/), such as mint.\n\n### CBD Plus Other Wholesome Ingredients Pack a Nutritious Punch\n\nThis smoothie is delicious, healthy and simple to make. Plus, it can set you on the road to recovery after an intense workout. \n\nHere are just a few nutritional highlights that this smoothie provides:\n\n* **Bananas:** Because they’re high in potassium, bananas can help prevent muscle cramps after workouts.\n* **Pineapples:** This tropical fruit contains anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce harmful inflammation after your workout.\n* **Spinach:** Popeye’s favorite leafy green is rich in calcium and iron. It not only replenishes your energy, but [it can also really help build muscle](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/3341839/Spinach-does-really-help-build-muscles.html) and speed up the protein conversion process in muscles.\n* **Almond milk:** This dairy alternative can provide a good source of protein and help boost your energy.\n* **Hemp seeds:** One of the most nutritious superfoods around, hemp seeds contain a substantial amount of protein and a good balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. \n\nRELATED: [DIY RECIPE: CRUNCHY & DELICIOUS HEMP CBD GRANOLA](https://hellomd.com/articles/diy-recipe-crunchy-and-delicious-hemp-cbd-granola/)\n\n### How Can CBD Help With Workout Recovery?\n\nRecovery is very important after a workout, and this is where [CBD can be extremely beneficial for people looking to improve their workout results](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-help-relieve-sore-muscles/). This cannabinoid has been shown to:\n\n* Relieve muscle pain\n* Ease the strain a workout can put on old injuries\n* Reduce discomfort the next day after a hard workout\n\n### Ingredients for CBD-Infused, Post-Workout Green Smoothie \n\nServes 2\n\n* 2 handfuls of spinach\n* 1 cup frozen pineapple\n* 1 banana\n* 2 cups almond milk\n* 2 mL hemp CBD oil\n* 2 tsp hemp seeds (optional)\n* Water (optional)\n\n### How to Make CBD-Infused, Post-Workout Green Smoothie \n\n1. Place all of your ingredients in a blender, and blend until smooth.\n2. Serve in a 12 oz mason jar or glass, then top with hemp seeds.\n3. To get the consistency of your choice, you can add more almond milk or water if the smoothie is too thick. Add some ice, and use less liquid if it’s too thin. \n\nYou can store your smoothie in the fridge for 1–2 days in the mason jar or in an airtight container. But, as has been well documented, opioids come with heavy dependency risks and may not even be all that effective for many people. \n\nThat’s why folks who deal with chronic pain turn to [cannabidiol (CBD)](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-a-workplace-solution-for-chronic-pain) to see whether it can help ease their pain and allow them to lead a normal life.\n\nHere are three of our most popular [Q&As about the efficacy of CBD for different kinds of chronic pain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-helps-reduce-chronic-pain)\n\n![Untitled57-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled57_min_a4c7ed91f0.png)\n\n### Q. Can CBD oil be used to treat knee and back pain?\n\nAnswer: **Yes**, [CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd) works orally or topically. The typical response is pain significantly improved within 10 minutes of a topical application with 10 mg/ml tincture or higher. Oral doses for chronic pain are quite individualized but for arthritis, a target dose I use is 60 mg per day. \n\n![Hello4-min (10).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_10_ad9eccd0ff.png)\n\n### Q. Can CBD help with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?\n\nAnswer: **Yes** it can. It all boils to the [endocannabinoid system (ECS)](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system). The ECS is largely devoted to maintaining homeostasis (the tendency of organisms to auto-regulate and maintain their internal environment at equilibrium). Deficiency or malfunction of the ECS has become a focus for researchers seeking treatment options for several maladies—especially those that have few, if any, effective pharmacotherapeutic interventions, such as celiac disease, MS, fibromyalgia, IBD, and IBS. In fact, the scientific community has recently termed the ECS malfunction: Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency, or CEDC. CBD works by balancing and supporting the ECS through its subtle effects on cannabinoid receptor-1 (CB1) and cannabinoid receptor-2 (CB2) receptors, as well as other receptors that modulate serotonin, GABA, dopamine, and many more. In IBS, IBD, and GERD, like most every physical-chronic condition, inflammation is central to both the etiology and symptomology of the respective disease. [CBD works to reduce inflammation by restoring balance to the ECS](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-help-relieve-diarrhea-and-restore-gut-health).\n\n![Hello2-min (12).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_12_5663ceb8bc.png)\n\n### Q. I have chronic pain from hamstring tendinopathy. Will CBD help?\n\nAnswer: Some emerging research indicates that [CBD is beneficial for orthopedic and musculoskeletal health](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-eases-my-fibromyalgia-symptoms). Some studies have demonstrated that CBD has amazing anti-inflammatory effects. [CBD works by activating cannabinoid receptors](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/beyond-the-cb1-and-cb2-cannabis-receptors-trpv1-and-gpr55). Activating these receptors causes lipids to be secreted that signal inflammation to shut off. It also encourages the body to repair and remodel the damaged sites. CBD should decrease inflammation from tendinopathy and promote healing.\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online Telehealth service HelloMD. While most folks opt for pharmaceuticals to treat fungal infections, alternatives are available. Many people, for example, have found that cannabidiol (CBD) products have helped them find relief from itchy and uncomfortable fungal infections.\n\nResearch is also increasingly backing up claims of CBD’s antifungal properties. We take a look at what that research shows and how you may be able to use CBD to treat fungal infections.\n\n### What, Exactly, Are Fungal Infections?\n\nFirst, let’s talk about what a fungal infection actually is. A fungus is a type of microorganism, and there are actually estimated to be millions of different species of fungus, only a small fraction of which researchers have discovered and named. Fungi can be found just about everywhere, including in water, air, earth and the human body. Some of the most well-known fungi include:\n\n* Mold\n* Mildew\n* Mushrooms \n\nAs is the case with many microorganisms, some fungi are harmless, while others can cause health problems.\n\nA fungal infection is a type of bad fungus that occurs on the skin or within the body, and it can overwhelm the body’s immune response. Fungal infections are extremely common and include unpleasant conditions like:\n\n* Athlete’s foot\n* Ringworm\n* Yeast infections\n* Jock itch \n\nNot only are they very uncomfortable, they’re also hard to get rid of.\n\n### Evidence Shows That CBD Helps Treat Fungal Infections\n\nSo, is CBD a reliable way of treating fungal infections? The good news is that we have a lot of indirect evidence suggesting that CBD and the cannabis plant in general likely have antifungal properties. \n\nHowever, as is often the case concerning the medicinal benefits of a plant that has been illegal for so long, frustratingly little research has been done analyzing CBD’s direct effects on fungal infections. But with some anti-cannabis laws finally being relaxed, this is starting to change. \n\nFor example, a 2011 study published in the _British Journal of Pharmacology_ showed that some cannabinoids have moderate antifungal properties, including:\n\n* CBD\n* Cannabigerol (CBG)\n* Cannabichromene (CBC)\n\nBut, the study suggested that the three cannabinoids, which don’t produce a high like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) does, [may boost the effects of caryophyllene oxide, an extremely potent antifungal](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3165946/). \n\nAlso, many of the terpenes—compounds that give plants their unique aromas and flavors—in cannabis have also been found to have antifungal properties. \n\nOne study looked at essential oils containing the terpenes [alpha-pinene](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b84822681fea20008e62ba0/know-your-terpenes-pinene) and delta 3 carene, both of which are terpenes found in the cannabis plant. This study found that both of the terpenes—and delta 3 carene in particular—[had antifungal benefits](http://agris.fao.org/agris-search/search.do?recordID=US201500153336). \n\nAnd a study of orange jessamine essential oil containing the terpene beta-caryophyllene—which is another terpene found in some cannabis strains—showed that it had moderate antibacterial and [strong antifungal effects](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27927082). Researchers also noted that the essential oil acted rapidly—in two to four hours—to kill the fungus. \n\nThis study is yet another indication that the wide array of compounds contained in cannabis have numerous health benefits, including as a potential fungicide.\n\nRELATED: [CAN THE TERPENE BETA-CARYOPHYLLENE BOOST CBD’S EFFECTS?](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-the-terpene-beta-caryophyllene-boost-cbds-effects/)\n\nThere are also many anecdotal accounts of people using CBD products to combat fungus. Of course, science is still trying to provide more clinical evidence of CBD’s health benefits, including its antifungal properties. That said, the indirect scientific evidence that has been gathered so far concerning other cannabinoids’ antifungal benefits as well as anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that CBD products hold promise as a potential fungicide.\n \n### How Can You Use CBD to Treat Fungal Infections?\n\nSo, what does all this research mean if you’re actually looking to use CBD to combat a fungus infection? Well, because we know that CBD isn’t the only cannabinoid with antifungal properties, you should opt for a full-spectrum CBD product. \n\nA full-spectrum CBD product is one that includes many of the other cannabinoids, like CBC, as well as terpenes, that have antifungal benefits. CBD-isolate products, on the other hand, only contain CBD and no other cannabinoids. \n\nAnother reason for choosing full-spectrum CBD products is to take advantage of the so-called “entourage effect.” Individual cannabinoids tend to work best when they’re part of a team of other cannabinoids. Specifically, research has shown that terpenes help carry major cannabinoids, like CBD, through the bloodstream. This entourage effect helps ensure your body is getting the full benefits of CBD.\n\nWhen seeking out full-spectrum CBD products, you can use oils and topicals that can be applied to the infection itself. Usually, you can find out from the ingredients list whether the product contains full-spectrum CBD. \n\nIdeally, the product should list all of the cannabinoids and terpenes that it also contains. But if you can’t find the information you’re looking for, you can always request the lab results from the company in question. \n\nIf the company doesn’t have lab results or can’t tell you anything about the tests its products have gone through, it may be best to move on to another product. To ensure you’re only using the highest-quality CBD products, always opt for ones that have been lab tested. \n\nPhoto credit: Original Moslert/Shutterstock.com\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? When I was in my teens and 20s, I washed my face with whatever was on sale at the drug store; I rarely moisturized; I only wore sunscreen when I was at the beach; and I never took my makeup off before bed. \n\nNow that I’m older and hopefully wiser, I’m one of the millions who buys multiple skin care products a year to try to get my skin back to how even, firm and bright it was when I was younger. In the United States, skin care is big business, with the industry’s [2017 revenue estimated at just above 17 million dollars](https://www.statista.com/forecasts/758611/revenue-of-the-skin-care-market-worldwide-by-country). \n\nIn the quest for youthful skin, it turns out cannabidiol (CBD) may be the secret weapon. We’re just starting to understand how CBD works in the body, but we know it interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a network of receptors found pretty much everywhere in the body—including in the skin. \n\nWe know that [CBD has anti-inflammatory](https://www.hellolift.com/health-wellness/5bfde1e38053b8000799704e/how-cbd-can-curb-chronic-inflammation) and antibacterial properties. This means CBD applied topically can help soothe red and inflamed skin. \n\nYou can also use CBD from the inside out to help you achieve youthful, supple and glowing skin. When you balance your ECS, your body can achieve homeostasis, which is key to a healthy body and healthy skin. And one way to balance your ECS is to introduce CBD into your daily routine. \n\nCBD contains vitamins:\n\n* A, which in certain forms can be an anti-inflammatory and also support the production of collagen \n* C, which helps protect against free radicals, and brightens and evens out skin tone \n* E, which moisturizes and helps reduce the appearance of scars, lines and other pigmentation \n\nSo, if you want your skin to appear more youthful, here are a few key skin concerns where CBD may help. \n\n### CBD Can Calm Red & Inflamed Skin \n\nWhile redness can strike anyone, if you have particularly sensitive skin, you probably have to deal with redness on a regular basis. There can be lots of different reasons why skin gets red, like:\n\n* Eczema\n* Rosacea\n* Dermatitis\n* Over-exfoliation\n* Sun damage\n* Inflammation\n\nNo matter what causes your redness, CBD can most likely help. If the underlying cause is a condition like rosacea, CBD can help balance your ECS, hopefully meaning fewer flare-ups in the future. \n\nIf underlying inflammation is why your skin goes red, [CBD helps curb inflammation](https://cbdstasis.com/cbd-inflammation-studies-summarized/). Studies show the cannabinoid seems to lessen inflammatory signals and gets in the way of proteins called cytokines. Cytokines signal to the body that something needs fixing. But too many cytokines result in excess inflammation, and is a marker in such conditions as arthritis and asthma. \n\nSo, a CBD topical could help soothe red skin, calming it and lessening inflammation. If you go this route, just be sure the product you choose doesn’t include other ingredients that may irritate your skin. \n\nRELATED: [ALL ABOUT TOPICAL CBD & HOW IT SINKS INTO THE SKIN](https://hellomd.com/articles/all-about-topical-cbd-and-how-it-sinks-into-the-skin/)\n\n### Help Prevent Wrinkles & Ease Inflammation With a CBD Moisturizer\n\nSo, what does youthful skin not have? Wrinkles. And how do you prevent wrinkles? You moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. \n\nWrinkles are folds in the skin that develop as we age, because skin becomes dry, thin and unable to repair itself. Wrinkles can appear because of:\n\n* Smoking\n* Sun damage\n* Genetics\n\nThe most important thing you can do to prevent wrinkles, and keep your skin looking youthful and even, is to maintain a healthy level of moisture. \n\nSo, if you want to ensure your skin’s moisturized and smooth, picking a nourishing CBD oil to add to your skin care routine is a must. Choose a CBD oil where the cannabinoid is the first ingredient and the other ingredients are ones that will add extra moisture, but won’t irritate your skin.\n\nAnd moisturizing with CBD can do more than just make your skin appear more youthful. It may also be good for your health. Aging skin has an increased number of inflammation sites. And [high inflammation markers seem to be correlated with conditions like Alzheimer’s disease](https://www.healthline.com/health-news/moisturizing-your-skin-may-help-prevent-age-related-diseases); moisturizing can help reduce these inflammation sites. And since CBD has proven anti-inflammatory properties, using a CBD-based moisturizer can help even more. \n\nYou can moisturize by patting a CBD oil directly onto your face (patting, instead of rubbing ensures more of the CBD makes it deep into your skin, instead of just wiping it around the top layer) or add a few drops of CBD to your favorite moisturizer to give it that extra boost. \n\n### CBD Can Help Restore Skin Firmness From the Inside Out\n\nWhile complexion, tone and wrinkles may be the first things you consider when it comes to youthful-looking skin, firmness is also an aspect of healthy skin that shouldn’t be overlooked. A firm, smooth surface is important to skin health and looking your best.\n\nSkin starts to lose firmness over time, and you may notice some sagging in areas around your jaw, eyes and neck. Skin sags, because it doesn’t have enough elastin and collagen.\n\n* **Collagen:** Collagen is a protein that makes your skin firm and flexible. Unfortunately, our bodies produce less and less collagen over time. \n* **Elastin:** Like the name suggests, elastin acts as an elastic, flexible fiber deeper in the skin. When elastin breaks down, skin isn’t able to snap back to where it was before being stretched, and so skin begins to sag. \n\nFree radicals, which can cause a host of bad health conditions, are also responsible for breaking down elastin in the skin. Luckily, CBD has antioxidant properties that can help fight these damaging compounds. \n\nIn addition to topical CBD, if you’re worried about the firmness of your skin, consider ingesting some CBD daily to help your body fight free radicals. This can also help balance your ECS to slow down the oxidative process. \n\nRELATED: [TAKING CBD TO BOOST YOUR BODY’S ANTIOXIDANT LEVELS](https://hellomd.com/articles/taking-cbd-to-boost-your-bodys-antioxidant-levels/)\n\n### Even Out Your Complexion With Vitamin C & CBD\n\nSun damage, acne scars, dark spots—they all add up to uneven skin tone. This can leave skin looking damaged, unhealthy and old. \n\nIf you look at the skin care products out there that claim to help even skin tone, you’ll see they almost all feature vitamin C. Vitamin C in most skin care products appears in the form of L-ascorbic acid. It’s a powerful antioxidant and can help even out skin tone.\n\nWe know that CBD contains vitamin C and is also a powerful antioxidant in its own right. So, a few drops of CBD oil mixed in with your vitamin C-rich serum will boost these vitamins to help brighten skin and fade dark spots. \n\nHopefully you’ve seen how CBD can help keep your skin bright, supple and youthful. But of course, CBD will work best as part of a holistic skin care regimen. In addition to CBD, don’t forget to:\n\n* Wear sunscreen daily.\n* Drink plenty of water.\n* Moisturize every day.\n* Eat a healthy diet.\n* Wash your face with your products of choice when you wake up and before you go to bed.\n\nWork all of this into your daily routine, and your skin will be looking as young as ever. \n\nPhoto credit: Ann Haritonenko/Shutterstock\n\nIf you want to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? The bill has already resulted in major changes to the hemp industry, allowing for the farming, processing and sale of products made from hemp. Hemp, which contains no more than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has now been removed from the government’s Controlled Substances Act. \n\nLike many laws, the passage of the Farm Bill initially raises more questions than answers, namely: Does the legalization of hemp mean cannabis will become federally legal? Let’s break down what we know—and what we don’t know.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### The FDA, Not the Farm Bill, Controls the Regulation of CBD\n\nCannabidiol (CBD) is found in both hemp and cannabis plants rich in THC. Many farmers are excited about the possibility of growing hemp, which is where the CBD in cosmetics and wellness products comes from. \n\nBut it’s the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that regulates CBD. And recently, [the agency concluded that “CBD is a drug.”](https://www.marketwatch.com/story/despite-hemp-legalization-fda-will-still-consider-cbd-products-illegal-2018-12-23)\n\nThe FDA states that it’s illegal to add hemp-derived CBD to any food or health product without its approval. This action may make it harder and costlier for cannabis businesses to move forward with manufacturing CBD products.\n\n### States Must Also Create Laws to Regulate Hemp\n\nIn addition to the Farm Bill’s regulations, [individual states must approve their own laws](http://www.ncsl.org/research/agriculture-and-rural-development/state-industrial-hemp-statutes.aspx) regarding the farming, manufacturing and regulation of hemp. \n\nAs of February 2019, a number of states still don’t allow for hemp cultivation, including:\n\n* Idaho\n* Texas\n* South Dakota\n* Iowa\n* Louisiana\n* Mississippi\n* Georgia\n* Ohio \n* Connecticut \n\nLocal jurisdictions also have the ability to regulate hemp farming within their spheres of influence.\n\n### The Farm Bill Brings Cannabis Confusion\n\nWith the ink barely dry on the Farm Bill, there have already been [two high-profile arrests and seizures of legal hemp](https://mjbizdaily.com/marijuana-or-hemp-manufacturers-snagged-by-farm-bill-confusion/) during transportation from farms to CBD manufacturing sites. \n\nThe arrests occurred despite the Farm Bill’s guarantee that “no state or Indian tribe shall prohibit the transportation or shipment of hemp or hemp products.”\n\nIn one instance, a [Colorado CBD manufacturer may have to wait months for the release of about 7,000 pounds of Oregon-grown hemp](https://hempindustrydaily.com/hemp-thc-testing-farm-bill-confusion/). Even though the plants have been tested four times and have been shown to fall within the federal THC limits, the raw hemp was confiscated by Idaho authorities, who say that the plants may not cross their state borders.\n\nIndividual states are still developing their own hemp guidelines. Currently in California, it’s illegal to include hemp-derived oils in food products. And even the cannabis-friendly [Golden State has no agency overseeing the regulation of hemp-derived CBD](https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CEH/DFDCS/CDPH%20Document%20Library/FDB/FoodSafetyProgram/HEMP/Web%20template%20for%20FSS%20Rounded%20-%20Final.pdf).\n\n### Will Cannabis Farmers Start Growing Hemp? \n\nUntil the numbers look better for hemp farmers, it’s unlikely that many marijuana cultivators will switch from growing their THC-rich cannabis strains to hemp. For example, consider what happens when a male hemp plant grown for its fiber, and a female cannabis plant bred for high-THC levels cross-pollinate. This could result in a significant drop in the THC levels of marijuana plants that come in contact with industrial hemp. \n\nThis issue has already concerned farmers in areas like Mendocino County, part of California’s famed Emerald Triangle, where [county supervisors recently declared a freeze on hemp cultivation](https://www.northbaybusinessjournal.com/northbay/sonomacounty/9359172-181/california-cross-pollination-cannabis-marijuana-law), in part because of the complex cross-pollination issues. \n\nBecause [cannabis pollen can travel between three and 30 miles](https://www.thecannabist.co/2015/06/18/safe-distance-hemp-marijuana-pollination/33130/), this issue has the potential to permanently alter the cannabis industry. \n\nIn Oregon, some outdoor cannabis farmers are [avoiding cross-pollination by moving to indoor operations](https://www.forbes.com/sites/andrebourque/2019/01/31/how-hemp-is-moving-oregon-marijuana-to-an-indoor-grow-crop/#76a0211060ed). Others are trying their hand at hemp farming, in part because of their transferable skill sets, and also because of the increased ability to secure loans and insurance. \n\n### Following the Money: Cannabis-Hemp Acquisitions Are on the Rise\n\nCanada-based Tilray, one of the world’s largest producers of medical marijuana products, [recently acquired Manitoba Harvest, the world’s largest manufacturer of hemp food products](https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/19/02/13261972/cannabis-companies-beginning-to-ante-up-for-bets-on-hemp). \n\nCanopy Growth, Canada’s largest cannabis stock by revenue, just announced that it acquired hemp company AgriNext USA. Canopy states that it intends to build the [first hemp industrial park in the United States](https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/19/03/13402200/canopy-growth-announces-acquisition-of-agrinextusa-expanding-hemp-bu). AgriNext’s plan is to build more hemp parks, enabling farmers to engage in one-stop destination services that will help both farmers and entrepreneurs. \n\nWith [Martha Stewart joining Canopy Growth to create hemp-CBD products](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/01/business/martha-stewart-cannabis-pot.html/), it seems that investors aren’t concerned about maintaining separation between hemp and cannabis.\n\n### Hemp’s Small Amount of THC Causes Problems \n\nFarmers and companies manufacturing hemp-derived CBD products must ensure that their products test at or below the 0.3% THC as required by the Farm Bill. Currently, no federal guidelines regarding testing exist. The potential for problems in this area increases with the Farm Bill’s allowance for interstate transport of hemp. \n\nThough the Farm Bill’s passage should have clarified that hemp only contains negligible amounts of THC and provided farmers with opportunities to grow a crop that’s currently more lucrative than farming corn, many sticking points remain. \n\n### Has the Government Sorted Out How to Regulate CBD? \n\nThe FDA estimates it could take years to complete the rulemaking process for regulating CBD. And despite the Farm Bill’s passage, outgoing FDA chief Scott Gottlieb still questions [whether the Drug Enforcement Administration has formally descheduled hemp-derived CBD](https://hempindustrydaily.com/fda-commissioner-rules-for-cbd-in-food-supplements-could-take-years/). \n\nFarmers are imploring the U.S. Department of Agriculture to complete its rulemaking, so that spring planting can take place in 2020. In the meantime, they’re asking for:\n\n* Access to crop insurance\n* Other federal financial resources\n* National standards for THC testing labs \n* An end to the restriction of seed imports \n\nThese types of rulings have the potential to create a framework that may help pave the way for federal legalization of cannabis, and [research on hemp cultivation](https://hempindustrydaily.com/california-hemp-company-sponsored-to-help-research-high-cbd-cultivars/) has the potential to help all farmers identify the best ways to grow cannabis commercially. \n\nIt appears that the tiniest fraction of THC and arguments about CBD have created significant problems for the rollout of commercial hemp farming. Looking at these challenges, it becomes easier to understand why federally legal cannabis may remain a pipe dream for a few more years.\n\nPhoto credit: Alexandr Grant/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles.
