Everyone from [Forbes](https://www.forbes.com/sites/ajherrington/2022/01/11/study-finds-cannabis-compounds-prevent-infection-by-covid-19-virus/?sh=703c90be1753) to [Jimmy Kimmel](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/13/arts/television/jimmy-kimmel-covid-cannabis.html) are weighing in on the study that's gone viral. \n\n![Can cannabis prevent infection from COVID-19?](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_20_at_9_08_08_AM_7c90885251.png)\n\nBut is this news really true? Let’s break down the study and find out.\n\n### The Cannabinoid Study: CBGA & CBDA\n\nThe study, published in the [Journal of Natural Products](https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.jnatprod.1c00946), sparked a discussion on whether or not cannabis can prevent infection from COVID-19. The study was conducted by the [Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University](https://today.oregonstate.edu/news/oregon-state-research-shows-hemp-compounds-prevent-coronavirus-entering-human-cells) (OSU) and [the department of molecular microbiology and immunology at Oregon Health & Science University](https://www.ohsu.edu/school-of-medicine/molecular-microbiology-and-immunology).\n\n![The COVID-19 virus](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_20_at_9_02_49_AM_2e3b2d6b2f.png)\n\nThe study was conducted with hemp, the non-psychoactive cannabis plant. The researchers looked for molecules in hemp that could bind to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. Once the cannabinoid acids bind to the spike proteins, it creates the inability of the virus to penetrate human cells. \n\n### Cannabinoids Bind to Spike Proteins Inhibiting Infection\n\nResearchers found that three cannabinoid acids had an affinity for binding to the spike proteins associated with COVID-19 — cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THC-A). Other cannabinoids were found to be ineffective. \n\n![Can cannabinoids stop the COVID-19 virus?](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_20_at_9_03_50_AM_452f0908e3.png)\n\nNext, researchers tested whether these acids that bind to spike proteins would stop the virus from penetrating the surface of human cells — effectively inhibiting the virus. Research carried forward with two of the three previously tested compounds — CBGA and CBDA — because researchers could not obtain enough THC-A due to its Schedule I substance designation. \n\nThey incubated the SARS-CoV-2 virus with hemp compounds and then exposed them to epithelial cells — the cells that line body tissues. After 24 hours of exposure, researchers then looked for the COVID-19 virus in the cells, but found none, noting that the hemp compounds “could be used to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and also to shorten infections by preventing virus particles from infecting human cells.”\n\n### Does This Mean Cannabis Cures COVID?\n\nNote that laboratory results do not always translate to real life. While these findings show promise, there is still much more research to be done before anything conclusive can be said about the ties between cannabis and COVID. \n\n![Lab researchers try to uncover if CBGA and CBDA prevent infection from the COVID-19 virus](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_20_at_9_04_47_AM_70cb15d555.png)\n\nNo marijuana was used in the study; the only compounds that were tested came from hemp. THC-A showed promise but was not studied as conclusively as CBGA and CBDA. So at the moment, consuming cannabis in any form has not been proven to cure or prevent infection from COVID-19. \n\nPeter Grinspoon, M.D., a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital [told Forbes](https://www.forbes.com/sites/chrisroberts/2022/01/13/no-sorry-smoking-marijuana-does-not-protect-you-from-covid-19/?sh=19deae414eee) “This is a long way off, assuming they work, which is by no means guaranteed,” he added. “I don't think many molecules at that level actually pan out into functional medicines.” \n\n### Vaccinations are Still the Best Way to Combat COVID-19\n\n![COVID-19 vaccination is the best way to prevent infection](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_20_at_9_05_58_AM_3ebe94b3b5.png)\n\nThe most concerning aspect of the virality of this news story is that it may deter people from getting vaccinated and simply choosing to ingest cannabis instead. This is not recommended. \n\n Vaccination is still your best course of action against the virus. While you may choose to experiment with cannabis additionally, there is no evidence to suggest that marijuana is the COVID-19 cure we’ve been waiting for. \n\nBut that doesn’t mean this isn’t an important step for weed, especially in the public eye. As we progress with federal legality in the U.S., we can cite the potential value in marijuana from studies such as this. \n\n![In New York you will be allowed to grow marijuana at home](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_19_at_4_04_20_PM_71a1e7e98d.png)\n\nWe hope to see more studies related to cannabis and COVID-19 to follow — hopefully uncovering more potential health benefits, especially in relation to the ongoing pandemic.\n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). Even with the vaccine, most people are still at risk of contracting the virus and may still experience various symptoms from COVID-19. [According to the CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html), some common symptoms of COVID-19 are: \n \n- Fever or chills\n- Cough\n- Fatigue\n- Muscle or body aches\n- Headache\n- Sore throat\n- Congestion or runny nose\n- Nausea or vomiting\n- Diarrhea\n\n![COVID is more and more common as Omicron surges. It's well documented that marijuana consumers have historically used medical marijuana to help with body aches, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, and to sleep better. \n\n### Cannabis Relieves Body Pain\n\n![COVID is more and more common as Omicron surges. Cannabis can help with COVID related symptoms.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_12_at_11_52_05_AM_332d779c39.png)\n\nFor many people, cannabis has reduces the sensation of pain. A report published by an ad hoc committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine found there was \"conclusive or substantial evidence that cannabis or cannabinoids are effective in the treatment of chronic pain in adults.\"\n\nMore specifically, cannabidinol (CBD) can help reduce pain. CBD has been proven to be [anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, and can also limit anxiety associated with pain](https://www.practicalpainmanagement.com/patient/treatments/marijuana-cannabis/empowered-pain-patient-guide-cbd). If you're suffering from body aches, joint pain, nerve pain, or headaches due to COVID-19, you may find relief with cannabis — specifically high CBD weed products.\n\n### Curb Nausea with Medical Marijuana\n\n![COVID is more and more common as Omicron surges. [Jacob Vigil, associate professor, UNM psychology department, explained that](http://news.unm.edu/news/cannabis-offers-mmediate-relief-from-symptoms-of-nausea-but-product-use-matters) \"THC, typically associated with recreational use, seemed to improve [nausea] treatment among consumers of Cannabis flower.\" Look for strains and products with a balanced level of CBD and THC, such as a 1:1. \n\n### Medical Marijuana for Anxiety & Sleep\n\n![African landrace strains have higher amounts of THCV](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_11_at_4_08_00_PM_e26aceb40a.png)\n\nMedical marijuana has been shown to help people achieve a better night's sleep. Sleep can be difficult when you are not feeling well, either because you feel pain, or are experiencing other symptoms. In particular, the anxiety caused by contracting COVID, can keep you awake. Not knowing what is going to happen next, and the sudden onset of symptoms, like losing taste and smell, can be anxiety-inducing. \n\nCBD has been shown to [help alleviate acute anxiety](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-taking-cbd-daily-can-help-reduce-your-anxiety) in medical marijuana patients. Some scientists believe that CBD works well at reducing anxiety, because of the way it interacts with serotonin receptors in the brain; lack of serotonin may be a principal cause of anxiety and depression. And CBD may act similarly to prescribed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), blocking the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain. This makes serotonin more available in the synaptic space (the space between neurons in the brain), increasing serotonin signaling.\n\n![Cannabis can help you sleep better.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_7_07_01_PM_caace57c88.png)\n\nTHC and CBD have been shown to help many people [get a better night's sleep](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-sleep-disorders-cannabis-can-help-alleviate), while also decreasing the feeling of anxiety. Cannabis works by triggering receptors in our endocannabinoid systems. These triggers help regulate hormones, immunity, pain, hunger, and (You guessed it!) sleep! There are several reasons that cannabis can help with a good night's sleep and the secret is in the cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis Sativa plant (marijuana), which help cause medicinal and therapeutic effects. Three of the cannabinoids that are well-known for inducing a sleep-filled night are THC, CBD, and now, CBN.\n\n### Cannabis and Your Immune System\n\n![What medical marijuana can help me lose weight?](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_11_at_3_56_23_PM_770def7d71.png)\n\nYou can even bolster your immune system with medical marijuana. If you'd like help fighting off additional illnesseses, [both THC and CBD possess antiviral and antifungal properties](https://hellomd.com/articles/supporting-the-immune-system-during-cold-and-flu-season-with-plant-based-supplements) to help your immune system. Antiviral substances work by inhibiting the development of target pathogens instead of merely killing them, similar to antibiotics.\n\nWhile you're quarantining, adopt a daily cannabis regimen to keep your immune system strong. Rather than vaping or smoking, which may irritate your lungs, try edibles.\n\n### Top Cannabis Products for COVID-19 Symptoms\n\nTo combat COVID-19 symptoms, look to these three cannabis products:\n\n### Proof 1:1 Tincture\n\n![Proof 1:1 tincture is good COVID-related symptoms](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_01_12_at_11_55_55_AM_9b04f8177f.png)\n\n\n[Proof 1:1 Tincture](https://proofcannabis.com/productsproof/1to1tincture) provides the balanced benefits of CBD and the psychoactive impact of THC. After years of being a dirty secret, cannabis was deemed \"essential\" during the global pandemic. Long socially distanced lines into dispensaries and a rise in online pickup orders confirmed the popularity of medical and recreational marijuana. Not surprisingly, 2020 brought an increase of 67% in U.S. cannabis sales.\n\nWhile THC helped people deal with the social isolation of COVID-19, the anxiety-relieving cannabinoid CBD also saw an increase in consumption. Across the board, [New Frontier Data](https://newfrontierdata.com/cannabis-insights/cannabis-consumption-reflects-dramatic-changes-amid-covid-19-pandemic) reported on the overall increase in cannabis consumption. In a recent survey, 42% of current marijuana consumers reporting increased usage, while 18% of study participants indicated a large increase in consumption.\n\nBelow are some cannabis trends we've seen over the past year during the global shut down.\n\n### Cannabis-Infused Beverages\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-06-07 at 9.44.11 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_06_07_at_9_44_11_PM_b3cef8b763.png)\n\nThough classified as edibles, cannabis consumers are giving infused beverages more attention than ever. While cannabis drinks hit the market with a bang a few years ago, they are becoming an increasingly popular choice. There's [Recess](https://takearecess.com/shop/sparkling-water/peach-ginger?gclid=Cj0KCQjwh_eFBhDZARIsALHjIKehuJ5uWQB_1zZVGdBItoZ6A9C7oD8QdTxfdqW8gWs4a6qNGAge0ygaAoo9EALw_wcB) a sparkling hemp CBD infused water with adaptogens , and [Gem + Jane](https://www.cannacraft.com/brand/gemjane) a \"THC botanical beverage infused with rare cannabinoids.\" We see growth across the CBD and THC sectors, and if it's a liquid, it may be infused with cannabis oil\n\n### Hemp/CBD Cigarettes\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-06-07 at 9.53.55 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_06_07_at_9_53_55_PM_d5a6e261fb.png)\n\n\nThe Marlboro cigarettes of yesteryear have been replaced by vaping nicotine with devices such as the Juul. Still, for those who want to break the habit or relax a little, hemp cigarettes made a grand entrance in 2021. Walk into your local headshop or dispensary, depending on where you live, and you may see hemp or CBD marijuana cigarettes. \n\nThey are a similar form factor as cigarettes, they often look the same and have a similar filtration device. However, hemp or CBD-marijuana cigarettes don't have nicotine, and THC amounts are below 0.3%—a level too low for intoxication. It's essential to find a reputable brand like [Shaman Smokes](https://cbdamericanshaman.com/cbd-cigarettes), a CBD cigarette blended from USA-grown hemp from hemp strains chosen for relaxation and focus.\n\n### Delta-8\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-06-07 at 10.34.51 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_06_07_at_10_34_51_PM_d0b0b1a31c.png)\n\nWhat's Delta-8, and why do you hear so much about it? Delta-8-Tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta-8-THC, Δ8-THC) is a psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, and in most places, it is gray-territory legal. Delta 8 can be extracted from either cannabis marijuana or hemp. \n\nDelta-8 is a form of THC, although with milder psychoactive effects. For some people who are overwhelmed by the effects of THC, Delta 8 may be a less intimidating high. You are likely to find Delta 8 in your local headshop as hemp can be legally grown and used for extractions all over the US. This makes delta-8 legal in states where delta-9 THC (regular marijuana) may be illegal.\n\n### Favorite Strains During Lockdown\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-06-07 at 10.35.56 PM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_06_07_at_10_35_56_PM_a6d2e322c5.png)\n\n\nWho would have thought we would be locked in our house for over a year in virtual isolation minus the occasional, or persistent, zoom meeting? Noone. \n\nWorking remotely took on a whole new meaning for most of us during 2020 and 2021, and for many, it meant increased flower consumption. Some of the favorites for working from home include the creativity-inducing [Blue Dream](https://hellomd.com/strains/blue-dream), a sativa-dominant hybrid that provides a cerebral and euphoric high. \n\nAnother strain specifically designed for relaxation is CBD-heavy [Harle-Tsu](https://hellomd.com/strains/harle-tsu/). An ideal health and wellness aid, Harle-Tsu helps cannabis consumers feel centered by promoting relaxation and focus. This high-CBD marijuana strain eases pain, stress, and anxiety.\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/2e855ec1b27fd0757c48ddcd28fc85d1/ee604/dc9d2239c9385f8a13ecc1a7b18a2dc7.png","srcSet":"/static/2e855ec1b27fd0757c48ddcd28fc85d1/69585/dc9d2239c9385f8a13ecc1a7b18a2dc7.png 200w,\n/static/2e855ec1b27fd0757c48ddcd28fc85d1/497c6/dc9d2239c9385f8a13ecc1a7b18a2dc7.png 400w,\n/static/2e855ec1b27fd0757c48ddcd28fc85d1/ee604/dc9d2239c9385f8a13ecc1a7b18a2dc7.png 800w,\n/static/2e855ec1b27fd0757c48ddcd28fc85d1/f3583/dc9d2239c9385f8a13ecc1a7b18a2dc7.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/2e855ec1b27fd0757c48ddcd28fc85d1/58556/dc9d2239c9385f8a13ecc1a7b18a2dc7.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/2e855ec1b27fd0757c48ddcd28fc85d1/61e93/dc9d2239c9385f8a13ecc1a7b18a2dc7.webp 200w,\n/static/2e855ec1b27fd0757c48ddcd28fc85d1/1f5c5/dc9d2239c9385f8a13ecc1a7b18a2dc7.webp 400w,\n/static/2e855ec1b27fd0757c48ddcd28fc85d1/58556/dc9d2239c9385f8a13ecc1a7b18a2dc7.webp 800w,\n/static/2e855ec1b27fd0757c48ddcd28fc85d1/99238/dc9d2239c9385f8a13ecc1a7b18a2dc7.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3590-markdown","title":"Long Haul COVID Symptoms – Can Cannabis Help?","slug":"long-haul-covid-symptoms-can-cannabis-help","content":"COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, can affect people in a multitude of ways ranging from very mild illness to severe complications and death. Many people recover from COVID-19 with no lasting effects, but a small group of COVID-19 survivors experience lingering symptoms such as fatigue, shortness of breath and “brain fog” for months after their apparent recovery. \n\nResearchers are still working to understand the condition that’s commonly called “long haul” COVID, but new clinics dedicated to their problems are helping patients cope with their symptoms – and recent research suggests that [innovative treatments](https://www.wsj.com/articles/experimental-drugs-aim-to-treat-long-haul-covid-11608569400) including cannabis could provide relief.\n\n### The Mystery of Long Haul COVID\nThe novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 is so new that researchers around the world are still working to unravel its mysteries. \n\nBecause the SARS-CoV-2 virus can attach to a cell receptor called ACE2 that’s found in many kinds of tissues, COVID-19 [symptoms can vary widely](https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html), ranging from the well-known fever, cough and body aches to less-common gastrointestinal problems like stomach pain and diarrhea, or cardiovascular issues such as blood clots. \n\nCOVID-19 can affect anyone, although seniors and those with other health problems are generally at higher risk of serious complications. And as the immune system ramps up defenses against the virus, it causes the “cytokine storm” that overwhelms the organs and can lead to death. \n\nBarring complications, people typically recover from COVID-19 in seven to ten days. But for about 30 percent of those who contract the virus, a variety of symptoms can linger for weeks and even months after the acute phase of the virus. \n\nDoctors have long known that people who become severely ill with COVID-19 can be left with a long list of potentially serious health issues. But those who experience long haul COVID are typically people who have had a milder form of the virus. For them, some of the symptoms they had while ill simply never go away. Those can include:\n\n- Shortness of breath\n- Brain fog\n- Joint pain\n- Persistent cough\n- Impaired sense of taste or smell\n- Fatigue\n- Headaches\nThese symptoms can disrupt daily life in a multitude of ways. Some long haul COVID patients can no longer work. For others, exercise is impossible. Brain fog and chronic pain can make it hard to manage even the simplest routine tasks. \n\n### Long Haul COVID Clinics Help Patients Cope\n\nBecause COVID-19 is such a new disease, researchers are still struggling to understand the reasons for such a wide variation in symptoms and individual responses to the virus, and that includes the mystery of long haul COVID. \n\nSome patients say that their doctors are skeptical of their condition and attribute it to other factors such as a different infection, chronic fatigue syndrome or stress. That makes it hard for COVID long haulers to get the help they need to [manage symptoms and take steps toward recovery](https://www.healthline.com/health-news/how-to-try-to-recover-if-you-have-long-haul-covid-19-symptoms#Common-long-haul-symptoms).\n\nNow, though, [special COVID care clinics](https://www.modernhealthcare.com/providers/we-know-this-real-new-clinics-aid-virus-long-haulers) are springing up around the country. These clinics can offer a variety of targeted therapies to support recovery, such as physical therapy, diet plans, breathing exercises, and mental health resources. Above all, these clinics provide reassurance that the symptoms are real and COVID-related, and that help is possible. \n\n In hard-hit South Los Angeles, St. John’s Well Child and Family network of community clinics, doctors work to follow up and offer outreach to everyone who tests positive for the virus. Other clinics, such as the University of Texas Medical Branch facilities, offer assessment and treatment to anyone whose symptoms haven’t subsided within a few weeks of contracting the virus.\n\nThere’s currently no cure for long haul COVID, and no clear data on how long it might last. But researchers are exploring whether some treatments and therapies designed for other conditions might help to treat COVID in general – and potentially for long haul COVID as well. An essential enzyme known as NAD+, ivermectin, a medication originally intended as an antiparasitic, and cannabis are among the many options being explored.\n\n### NAD+: A New Use for an Essential Enzyme\nNicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD, is a coenzyme that’s found in all living cells. In its active form it’s called NAD+, and recently it’s become the [focus of intense research](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6751327) \n for its ability to boost the functioning of a multitude of key biological processes. \n\nNAD+ supports DNA and cell repair, helps the body extract energy from food, and encourages the optimal functioning of chromosomes. But as the body ages, it makes less NAD+, which leads to weaker defenses against disease and greater risk of age-related problems such as cognitive decline and muscle weakness. \n\nResearch suggests that NAD+ supplementation, especially in the form of [IV infusions](https://www.icryo.com/nad-iv-therapy/), can improve brain function, fight chronic fatigue, regenerate cells and boost the metabolism. And some studies have found that NAD+ infusions could inhibit the COVID complications that arise from the cytokine storm, an overreaction of the immune system as it attempts to fight the virus.\n\n### Ivermectin: New Applications for an Old Drug\n\nIn the rush to find treatments for all types of COVID illness, researchers have been exploring ways to repurpose existing drugs created to treat other conditions. One of these is ivermectin, a medication originally developed to treat parasitic infections. \n\nAlthough ivermectin is FDA-approved for that purpose, it hasn’t yet been approved for treating symptoms of COVID-19. Still, [in preliminary studies](https://www.thelancet.com/journals/eclinm/article/PIIS2589-5370(20)30464-8/fulltext), ivermectin has been shown to reduce inflammation and interfere with the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein that attaches to cell membranes. \n\nResearchers warn that more studies are needed to say with certainty that ivermectin can play a meaningful role in treating COVID-19. Some study participants showed improvement in their symptoms, while others didn’t. The [National Institutes of Health has decided](https://www.covid19treatmentguidelines.nih.gov/statement-on-ivermectin/), at least for now, against recommending it as a valid treatment for COVID-19, but the NIH also leaves the decision to use ivermectin up to individual doctors and their patients.\n\n### Cannabis Could Help COVID Long Haulers\n\nThe many compounds in cannabis work with the body’s natural endocannabinoid system to provide many health benefits, and research continues to reveal more ways these compounds can help to keep brain and body in balance. \n\nCannabidiol CBD, delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, and more than 100 other compounds work together to boost immune functioning, [reduce inflammation](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-curb-chronic-inflammation), and keep the body’s many subsystems working in sync.\n\nStudies have also shown that cannabis is a powerful neuroprotectant capable of preserving neural pathways in the brain after trauma such as a brain injury or stroke. All of these properties make cannabis a promising candidate for relieving many symptoms of COVID-19 that affect the long haulers.\n\nA [recent study](https://www.forbes.com/sites/lindseybartlett/2021/01/21/new-study-shows-cannabis-reduces-inflammatory-storms-caused-by-covid-19/?sh=4e4db13e6d0a)\n suggests that some cannabis strains could help to reduce the out of control immune reactions that cause some of the most severe effects of the virus. And other [recent research](https://www.cannabissciencetech.com/view/covid-19-lung-inflammation-reduced-by-cbd) shows that cannabis strains high in CBD may help to reduce lung inflammation and damage that frequently occurs with severe COVID-19. \n\nFor those reasons, cannabis could also be useful for relieving many of the symptoms of long haul COVID. Because it’s often used for arthritis and other kinds of [chronic pain](https://hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-relieves-pain-better-than-opioids-do), it may help with the joint aches and frequent headaches that come with long haul COVID. \n\nSome cannabis strains can be especially useful for boosting focus and concentration, so they may help with the brain fog and cognitive problems that go along with long haul COVID. Cannabis can also help to relieve anxiety and depression, which affect many people dealing with long-term COVID symptoms.\n\nCannabis advocates warn that it’s best to avoid smoking cannabis if you’re suffering from COVID symptoms, since that can irritate the lungs. Consider vaping, fast-acting tinctures or edibles instead.\n\nBecause COVID-19 is so new, researchers still don’t understand why some people become COVID long haulers. But cannabis and other innovative treatments can help them feel better while symptoms linger on.\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABQAAAANCAYAAACpUE5eAAAACXBIWXMAAAsTAAALEwEAmpwYAAADdklEQVQ4y1WRW0zTZxjGe7XdbNn9Ls12tSUkhhjm5o2LETnKaUVdaymCYUBFrKCU0pYeaOm5HNrSKYUgIqWAOgpbaamWg5rgPO0QD3EOYYcsW8LBCxn77U93yPYmT/J8F98vz/s+oi1gdW2V5edLbM8fgjZevODl5mbq/dPPv+LUGriemOXH3za4efsByfmbJJJzzM4tMDe/QFLw167PMh1LINoGrK2tsbL8/H/Azb+Byz/8gkOjZyZ2jUffLQufZohMRIiMDXMx+ClXPpskNpMgIQA/j8b+AxQSbvvft7ZY21hPJdxO//TZCraWVr6Ymube/a+YmIzh6ekh2ONhIODl4tAQkckp4sIGRpvmL+D6ugBcesY/s7n58l//8MkSdrVWAEZ5+PgpU9EEQ2OXGR3qp7+ni/DYuJA6zkxyHpfXjSh1w9VVnjx+RPzGA0YnEizeuc/3Syt8ee8bpmfm8HX4GBm9SmQqRv+FEIPD44RDYbo7uunsCuD3B7GYHeg1OkSRqQRjY5P0Dl5FpvSQ//EJDpfX4T03hNXh52yTEVWLGVVzG/X1Klr1dsKDIXq7fPT29OJo91B3UsUhsQRpcSEih9OP2xPA4buEvClAaZWOPfuLKa8+Q6vRhfRoFfl5YsrKqimT12C3exnw+lHXKjCfacLY0IClVs7RgjwkJSWIVCoTGo0Zhz/EwUoDYoWd3fuKSN+TjVSu4EBmPrvSMygqlpKTK8bt8nHB66Vbp6OtXMybb7xGZtpbaEv2cjgvRwCq27HYvFh9I+zKOk5hjZMPsqXseDeDne9nkpNdhEx6DFObm76+YaLCiYLCutrj5SgLPiQjLY3XX32FvWnvIC/9CNEntU2cOmvCYO5m/76DZMtaBHAFu7PKON2oYzw8wd0733JrYZHpiSh3F7+mq81CVkY6tnY3p04oKZfIaG42omlsQFSjUNGi93AlMktjvZoCqZL3ipQcqWolNDDC6PBl/B4/ocFR4tEkycQtmuuU7Hx7h5DaRd6BXOoUSqFhIwq5BJFOaC1w/hLD43Gs7iCGdh/qNi8ag5OOznNoNUJ6vZWA0Pr5YAivrw+TyUlt7WmahfZzcwqpqKhGrzVTd0yGSH5EgslgpbMjgMftS8nl6MIpyGJ2YbG4UzIYbBiN9pQMehsmoyPlpaWHqJBXolUbOVkp50+28Nf57jDOvwAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/ee604/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.png","srcSet":"/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/69585/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.png 200w,\n/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/497c6/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.png 400w,\n/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/ee604/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.png 800w,\n/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/f3583/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/58556/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/61e93/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.webp 200w,\n/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/1f5c5/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.webp 400w,\n/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/58556/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.webp 800w,\n/static/e759c0613c574a57d9b74fa46c9904d9/99238/11d626b6542d3cb6af888d26057ce8de.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3178-markdown","title":"DIY Recipe: Heartwarming Rosebud Green Tea Infused with CBD","slug":"diy-recipe-heartwarming-rosebud-green-tea-infused-with-cbd","content":"There is something about taking a moment, especially during a particularly stressful day and making a warm cuppa tea can make almost anything just a bit better, especially so during the COVID-19 pandemic. That incredible combination of stepping away for a moment to focus on something else (making tea), feeling the warmth of the cup relax the muscles in your hands, and watching the steam rise - your first sip goes a long way toward melting your worries away. And science agrees!\n\nAccording to CNN Health’s Article [“Why drinking tea might just help in a crisis”](https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/21/health/tea-mental-health-benefits-wellness/index.html) a review of more than 100 studies found that green tea can offer three significant benefits to the brain. It can reduce anxiety, boost cognitive abilities, and support healthy brain function, specifically memory.\n\nNot a fan of green tea? No worries. A study by the University College London shows that black tea can help inhibit stress hormones like cortisol. We could talk about it all day, but we’ll keep brief. We know you’re here to learn to make DIY Cannabis Tea. \n\nThe cannabis plant contains many naturally-occurring cannabinoids. Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of them. CBD isn’t known to cause intoxicating side effects--those come primarily from another cannabinoid: Tetrahydrocannabinol or (THC). CBD’s claim to fame is its ability to affect neurological receptors responsible for mood, stress, and pain management. \n\n To add the benefits of CBD to your tea you have two choices: a CBD product from a dispensary or using a high CBD strain of flower. The market is full of pure CBD oils, tinctures, and disolvables that you can add to your favorite drinks, and they can be a fast, no-fuss way to add the benefits of CBD to your favorite beverages. \n\nWhile they are high in CBD, they may not be your most therapeutic option. There is mounting evidence to show that CBD is [most therapeutic when THC is also present](https://bpspubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/j.1476-5381.2011.01238.x) As usual, nature knows best. Using the plant in its natural form is likely the most therapeutic option.\n\n If you’re looking for the benefits of CBD but want to avoid THC’s psychoactive effects, you can brew your tea with a cannabis strain that’s higher in CBD and lower in THC. \n\nWe’ve got a few suggestions listed in the recipe itself, which is coming right up! \n\n### Ingredients for DIY Cannabis Tea With High CBD Strains \n4 cups of water\n1 tablespoon of unsalted butter or coconut oil. \n1/4 teaspoon loose leaf green tea \n1/4 teaspoon loose leaf [organic rose buds](https://www.etsy.com/listing/541490750/organic-dried-rose-damascena-buds-bulk?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_e-home_and_living-food_and_drink-herbs_and_spices_and_seasonings-herbs_and_spices&utm_custom1=_k_Cj0KCQiA9P__BRC0ARIsAEZ6irhoSZvGFaPW1A8LxJ16djzNBbRNlXIJQwVztI7hjvAqBiRqRmJQsGQaAvDyEALw_wcB_k_&utm_content=go_1844702805_75381303731_346364747985_pla-306107311649_c__541490750_118285753&utm_custom2=1844702805&gclid=Cj0KCQiA9P__BRC0ARIsAEZ6irhoSZvGFaPW1A8LxJ16djzNBbRNlXIJQwVztI7hjvAqBiRqRmJQsGQaAvDyEALw_wcB)\n1 gram of dried cannabis bud , we've chosen [Charlotte’s Web](https://viva.hellomd.com/strains/charlotte's-web)\n\n### Equipment\nAn herb grinder or sharp knife\nA saucepan \nA spoon\nA strainer \nYour favorite mug \n\n### How To Make DIY Cannabis Tea With High CBD Strains\n\n### Step 1: Grind or Chop Cannabis \n\nIf you have an herb-grinder, grind the cannabis until it looks “chopped” not powdery. If it is too fine, you’ll have a difficult time straining it from your tea. You can also use a sharp knife to chop your cannabis. If you like, you can remove seeds and stems but keep them around. You might like to add a stem or two later in the process.\n\nStep 2: Boil 4 Cups Of Water\nGet that saucepan out and boil some water. We say boil, but there is a bit of debate in the tea community about boiling vs. heating water for tea. We’ll just [leave this link here](https://www.thespruceeats.com/how-to-brew-tea-water-temperatures-766316) and let you make this call for yourself. \n\nStep 3: Add Butter or Oil And Let It Melt Completely\nSounds funny, we know, but this recipe needs a little fat or oil. That’s because cannabinoids like CBD and TCH need to bind to fat in order to be available to your body. Without the fat, they’d pass right through. So if you want those therapeutic benefits, add that fat! \n\nWhile it’s melting you can read this little article about [why you need to eat fat with your cannabis](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/why-you-need-to-eat-fat-with-your-cannabis). \n\n### Step 4: Add Cannabis And Tea Bag or Loose Leaf Tea To Your Boiling Water\nJust pop them in the saucepan with the water. That’s all there is to it!\n\n### Step 5: Allow To Boil For 7-10 Minutes\nStir your tea frequently. It’s soothing, meditative and helps the ingredients infuse the water, rather than sticking to the sides of your pot.\n\nTip: If you want to increase potency by adding cannabis shake, stems or flowers this is a great time to do it. Never heard of shake? Give this a read: [what’s cannabis shake and is it as potent as bud.](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/whats-cannabis-shake-and-is-it-as-potent-as-bud-is) \n\n### Step 6: Allow Tea To Steep For 10 Minutes.\nTurn the heat down (or off completely) and let your mixture mingle. It can be tempting to skip (or skimp) on this step but try to be patient. To get the most benefits from your tea, you’ll need to treat it like the herbal infusion it is and let it steep.\n\nWhile it’s steeping, you can [read more about herbal infusions](https://www.thespruceeats.com/how-to-make-an-herbal-infusion-1762142#:~:text=To%20make%20a%20decoction%2C%20combine,liquid%20into%20the%20storage%20jar) It’ll make those ten minutes pass faster.\n\n### Step 7: Remove Your Pan From The Heat. \nWe’re about to handle it and that burner will just get in the way.\n\n### Step 8: Scoop The Tea Bag Out With Your Spoon.\nUnless you used loose leaf tea. Then move on to Step 9. \n\n### Step 9: Pour Tea Through A Strainer Lined With Cheesecloth And Into Your Cup\nThis will remove all plant matter, both cannabis and tea leaves, from your drink. If you’re not telling fortunes, you don’t need them in your cup! \n\nIf you have a small strainer, like the kind used for [pourover coffee](https://www.seriouseats.com/2014/06/make-better-pourover-coffee-how-pourover-works-temperature-timing.html) you can place your mug under the strainer and pour. If you’re using a larger strainer you might want to opt for a teapot or bowl and then transfer the tea to your mug.\n\n### Enjoy Your DIY Cannabis Tea!\nWell done! You deserve a cup! Curl up on your couch, wrap your hands around that warm cup and sip away knowing that you’ve done two great things to lower your stress level. You’ve explored [how a daily tea ritual at home can reduce stress and elevate your mood](https://medium.com/@estero/how-a-daily-tea-ritual-at-home-can-reduce-stress-and-elevate-your-mood-79fdef0f9019) and you have treated your body to the wide range of benefits it can gain from Cannabis and CBD. \n\n### A Bit About What To Expect After Drinking Your Tea\nIf you’re used to fast-acting edibles or tinctures this may be a gentler experience. You will feel the effects, but not as instantly. Our advice: start with one cup and give yourself a nice long wait before evaluating your response or going back for another dose. If you’d like to read up on eating cannabis before you try.\n\n### If you enjoyed this cannabis tea recipe and would like to read another. \n\n[Check out DIY Recipe: Full-Spectrum Tea Made With Cannabis Rosin.](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/diy-recipe-full-spectrum-tea-made-with-cannabis-rosin) It’s a different approach with different benefits and is definitely worth a read.\n \n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/88979baed1fd189687329425f286383a/ee604/240aa67c4ff866d456d84ea5ab4027df.png","srcSet":"/static/88979baed1fd189687329425f286383a/69585/240aa67c4ff866d456d84ea5ab4027df.png 200w,\n/static/88979baed1fd189687329425f286383a/497c6/240aa67c4ff866d456d84ea5ab4027df.png 400w,\n/static/88979baed1fd189687329425f286383a/ee604/240aa67c4ff866d456d84ea5ab4027df.png 800w,\n/static/88979baed1fd189687329425f286383a/f3583/240aa67c4ff866d456d84ea5ab4027df.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/88979baed1fd189687329425f286383a/58556/240aa67c4ff866d456d84ea5ab4027df.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/88979baed1fd189687329425f286383a/61e93/240aa67c4ff866d456d84ea5ab4027df.webp 200w,\n/static/88979baed1fd189687329425f286383a/1f5c5/240aa67c4ff866d456d84ea5ab4027df.webp 400w,\n/static/88979baed1fd189687329425f286383a/58556/240aa67c4ff866d456d84ea5ab4027df.webp 800w,\n/static/88979baed1fd189687329425f286383a/99238/240aa67c4ff866d456d84ea5ab4027df.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3169-markdown","title":"DIY Recipe: Immune-Boosting Sweet & Spicy Pineapple Wellness Shots","slug":"diy-recipe-immune-boosting-sweet-and-spicy-pineapple-wellness-shots","content":"The winter season brings the holidays and festive fun, but along with that, it's the season for colds and flu. And this year, we have COVID-19 added into the mix.\n\nAs we move into colder, darker days, staying healthy is a must. The good news: you can give your immune system an extra advantage with today's hottest health trend: [wellness shots](https://lcrhealth.com/wellness-shots-juice/). Sipping these tiny, tasty \"shots\" of nutrient-rich juices, spices, and herbs will give you immune-boosting vitamins and herbs. Added to your daily wellness routine, it's a powerhouse immunity boost.\n\nCommercially prepared wellness shots can cost more than $4 (and we've seen them cost as much as $8) for a two-ounce bottle. But you can make a big batch of your favorite wellness shots at home for a fraction of that price using healthy, natural ingredients that you may already have in your kitchen. \n\nWhat's more, you can power up your wellness shots with immune-boosting additives like high-quality CBD. Below is a guide to making your CBD-infused wellness shots by mixing and matching popular ingredients from your supermarket or natural food store.\n\n### What's a Wellness Shot?\n\nWellness shots are taking the health and fitness world by storm. They're very small, highly concentrated concoctions made from an array of nutrient-rich ingredients, and they're [widely praised by fitness and wellness advocates](https://minimalistbaker.com/lemon-ginger-turmeric-wellness-shots/) for their ability to deliver a potent brew of vital vitamins, minerals and other nutrients, without racking up a lot of extra calories.\n\nThe current wellness shot craze builds on the popularity of an old wellness staple, nutrient \"shots\" made from wheatgrass, and a few other ingredients added for taste. Now, though, wellness shots come in all kinds of flavors and nutrient combinations, although most of them are built around a core set of ingredients that includes apple cider vinegar, turmeric, and pepper. \n\nWellness shots sound healthy, [but are they](https://wexnermedical.osu.edu/blog/are-wellness-shots-effective#:~:text=Wellness%20shots%20are%20typically%20small,cider%20vinegar%2C%20turmeric%20and%20ginger.&text=Ginger%20can%20help%20reduce%20nausea%20and%20bloating%20of%20the%20stomach.)? Some nutrition experts say that wellness shots are too small to make a considerable contribution to your overall daily nutrient intake, but they can pack a more powerful nutritional punch, more than an equivalent glass of fortified juice. \n\nA wellness shot can have significantly fewer calories than that glass of juice, too, but these little drinks aren't calorie free – and depending on ingredients, some two-ounce wellness shots can contain over one hundred calories a 2 ounce serving!\n\nOther wellness experts point out that an extra boost of vitamins and minerals is never a bad idea, especially during times of stress. Wellness shots aren't a substitute for a healthy diet that's rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy oils, but they are usually made with these and other ingredients that have documented health properties, so they can add nutrients that you might otherwise be missing. \n\n### How to Build Your Best Wellness Shot\n\nTo make your own wellness shots, you'll need a few basics and a willingness to try different combinations of fruits, veggies, and spices. \n\nWe think a juicer works best to blend your ingredients because it immediately produces a pulp-free drink, but you can also use a blender and strain the resulting mixture to eliminate pulp and other materials. Other useful tools include a grater and pepper grinder.\n\n### Start With the Essentials\n\nWellness shots can taste sweet, spicy, or tart – or any combination of these. But just about all of them [are built around three nutrient-rich, natural ingredients](https://greatist.com/eat/recipe/diy-wellness-shots):\n\n### 1. Apple Cider Vinegar\n\nApple cider vinegar, or ACV, has been a home remedy staple for years, and now it's one of the stars of the modern wellness movement. ACV is made from fermented apples that have been further treated with friendly bacteria to create acetic acid, the ingredient that seems to be responsible for its [health benefits](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/6-proven-health-benefits-of-apple-cider-vinegar). \n\nACV contains potassium and some amino acids and antioxidants, and research suggests it can help balance blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol. ACV may also help the skin by destroying surface bacteria and balancing skin pH.\n\n### 2. Turmeric\n\n![1.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/1_2ea3c2f52b.png)\n\nTurmeric, especially its main active ingredient curcumin, has plenty of [documented health benefits](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/top-10-evidence-based-health-benefits-of-turmeric). This golden spice is a natural anti-inflammatory that can be as effective as some prescription medications, and it can boost the activity of natural antioxidants.\n\nAlong with those benefits, turmeric can boost heart health and elevate levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, a chemical that supports memory and cognition. That's why some research suggests turmeric can help delay or reverse dementia and other kinds of memory loss. Turmeric may also play a key role in preventing or slowing the development of certain cancers. \n\nTurmeric is a potent natural healer on its own, but black pepper can boost curcumin absorption by 2000 percent!\n\n### 3. Black or Cayenne Pepper\n\nPepper has been called the king of spices, and with good reason. Ordinary black pepper has a [long list of health benefits](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/black-pepper-benefits). \n\nIt's rich in piperine, a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound that appears to improve brain function, help balance blood sugar, support digestive health, and even fight cancer. Piperine is the ingredient that boosts the body's absorption of curcumin.\n\nCayenne pepper is another pepper variety with [plenty of health benefits](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/8-benefits-of-cayenne-pepper). It's rich in capsaicin, a compound that boosts metabolism, improves digestive health, and may even lower the risk of some cancers. Capsaicin is also a powerful pain reliever often found in topical ointments and balms for sore muscles and joints.\n\n### Add Fresh Vegetables or Fruits\n\nTo build your wellness shot, start with fresh fruits or vegetables – or a combination of these – to suit your taste. Create a tangy, citrusy shot with Vitamin C-rich lemons or oranges, or blend with cranberries, blueberries, or other vitamin-rich fruits. Adding fruits will deliver a huge shot of immune-boosting terpenes, like the essential oil limonene, from lemons.\n\nBlend pineapples or apples with turmeric or apple cider vinegar, or combine antioxidant-rich spinach or celery with lemon and green apples for a green shot base. Try sweeter veggies like beets and carrots for plenty of Vitamin C and A. \n\n### Experiment With Herbs and Spices\n\nBoost the health benefits of your homemade wellness shots with a variety of immune-boosting herbs and spices that can blend well with fruits, veggies, and the Big Three of ACV, turmeric and pepper. Grate fresh ginger into your wellness blend for digestive health and cold relief, or add immune-boosting cinnamon to a sweeter shot. \n\nAdd a little honey or maple syrup to taste if you like, but avoid artificial sweeteners and plain sugar.\n\n### Consider Adding CBD\n\nCBD, or cannabidiol, can [add an extra boost](https://emilykylenutrition.com/ginger-turmeric-shots-infused-with-cbd/)\nto the benefits of your DIY wellness shots. This compound, which is derived from hemp or marijuana, works with the body's natural system of cannabinoid receptors to balance the body's many subsystems, [support the immune system](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/supporting-the-immune-system-during-cold-and-flu-season-with-plant-based-supplements) and regulate mood.\n\n[![2.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/2_bd57cde0ab.png)](https://www.curednutrition.com/)\n\nAdd a few drops of high-quality CBD oil or a balanced ratio of THC to CBD from a tincture. Add this to any wellness shot recipe to [support your immune system](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-fight-superbugs-and-keep-you-healthy), relieve anxiety, and promote overall wellness. If you choose to add a tincture with THC, mind your dosage!\n\nIndividual responses to CBD and THC can vary, so start small and gradually increase the amount you add until you reach the desired effects. Look for pure tinctures and concentrates without added ingredients from quality retailers and brands.\n\n### Our Signature\n\n\nThis DIY recipe will make 4 shots. For the holidays, I'm making this wellness shot and leaving it on several neighbor's doorsteps in a cute mason jar with a holiday note.\n\n### Ingredients\n\n- 1/2 a ripe pineapple\n- 2 small lemons\n- 1/4 cup chopped, peeled fresh tumeric (much tastier than the ground spice!)\n- 1/4 cup chopped fresh ginger\n- a pinch of cayenne (or to your taste)\n- 2 full droppers of CBD tincture\n- 4 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (I like the [Bragg](https://www.amazon.com/Bragg-Organic-Apple-Cider-Vinegar/dp/B001I7MVG0) brand)\n- 5 tablespoons of raw, local, organic honey\n\nBlend or juice all ingredients together. Strain out pulp and other solids. Breathe in slowly and release the breath slowly too. This helps to calm the sympathetic nervous system, which plays a role in the \"fight or flight\" response. A regular breathing practice can also help to keep the respiratory system healthy, but if you have a respiratory condition like COPD, pulmonary fibrosis or asthma, it's wise to check with a medical provider before giving it a try.\n\nBreathing exercises have also been recommended to patients suffering from COVID-19 and even as a preventative measure. It turns out that the better condition your lungs are in, the better your system will be in fighting the novel coronavirus. The best way to get your lungs in tip-top shape is the old fashioned way – with regular aerobic exercise. \n\nBut, simple breathing exercises can help to strengthen your lung capacity as well. Deep breathing allows your body to clear secretions in the lungs and this practice is especially helpful for people who are unable to exercise. \n\nHere we outline 6 different ways to support your respiratory system and increase your overall immunity.\n\n### 1. Simple Breathing Exercise\n\nThis exercise is perfect for people who are looking for deeper relaxation or are unable to undertake any strenuous aerobic activity. \n\nSit tall in a chair, relax your belly and your shoulders - close your eyes. Inhale deeply and allow your belly to extend with your deep breath. Hold the breath for a few seconds and exhale slowly until all the air is released. Repeat for as a long as possible. If you are sick, allow yourself to cough so that your lungs may release any additional secretions. [According to Bruce Levy]( https://www.aarp.org/health/conditions-treatments/info-2020/lung-health-covid19.html), chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, this “exercise is a preventive measure “that gets out the secretions sitting in the gravity-dependent portions of your lungs and decreases your risk of pneumonia and infection”\n\n### 2. Wim Hof Breathing Exercise\n \nWim Hof, is an extraordinary man and endurance athlete, also known as the \"IceMan\". He is known for his extreme ability to withstand freezing cold temperatures and set a Guinness Book World record for swimming 57 meters under ice. He also set a record for running the fastest half marathon, while barefoot, over snow and ice.\n \nWim Hof attributes his superhuman abilities to three \"pillars\": cold therapy, breathing, and meditation. With these, he has not only been able to achieve enormous goals but also to increase immune response.\n\nThe Wim Hof breathing technique can be learned through his online course which includes a series of breathing techniques, meditation exercises, and cold water immersion (which is not as bad as it sounds). Learn more about the [Wim Hof Method](https://www.wimhofmethod.com/practice-the-method) on his site.\n\n### 3. Yoga\n\nSome research suggests that yoga [can help to improve lung function](https://www.yogajournal.com/poses/anatomy/lungs)\n in people with COPD and asthma. The slow and meditative movements of yoga practice typically include breathwork as well. Yoga can help to open the chest, strengthen the lungs and improve the flow of oxygen throughout the body. Yoga can also help to calm anxiety and reduce panic attacks, which can also cause dyspnea and hyperventilation.\n\n### 4. Steaming with Terpene-Rich Essential Oils\n\nSteaming with peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils can help to open up the airways, reduce congestion and make breathing easier. Add a few drops to a pot of hot water, and breathe in the steam as it rises. Repeat as needed for comforting relief of temporary congestion from respiratory infections, colds and flu.\n\n### 5. Herbs and Spices\n\nA variety of [herbs and spices](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/supporting-the-immune-system-during-cold-and-flu-season-with-plant-based-supplements)\ncan help to relieve mild breathing problems too. A cup of steaming, hot green tea can reduce symptoms of bronchitis and clear congestion in the airways, and so can brews made from ginger, turmeric and lemongrass. A [recent study](https://lunginstitute.com/blog/6-natural-treatments-for-copd/) also indicates that the ancient herb panax ginseng shows promise as a treatment for COPD. Add a bit of honey for taste and some additional antioxidants.\n\n### 6. Vitamins and Minerals\n\n A healthy diet supports the whole body, but [some foods can be especially beneficial](https://www.cleaneatingmag.com/clean-diet/7-natural-sources-for-stronger-healthier-lungs)/for the respiratory system. New Research reveals that Vitamin D can promote a stronger resistance to respiratory infections, and Vitamin C can help keep the entire immune system strong. Flavonoids, found in many foods such as blueberries, red grapes, tomatoes and grapes, also support a healthy immune system and reduce levels of inflammation that can contribute to breathing problems. So can quercetin, a chemical found abundantly in apples. \n\nThe causes of breathing problems are many and varied, and so are the treatments aimed at relieving them. If you have a chronic respiratory condition or another health issue that interferes with breathing, it's important to work with your healthcare provider to find the best way to manage your condition. But in many cases, cannabis and other natural remedies can support the body's own defenses and help you breathe easier, too.\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABQAAAANCAYAAACpUE5eAAAACXBIWXMAAAsSAAALEgHS3X78AAADfUlEQVQ4yy2R6zfbBxjHf//L9nZ70bOju57u8mo7uuO0pseGM6Wc0yplStUl2oUijTMxtyAXQquCBKnOEBIqQjSuSdQtFYmuR1tDy0g++3X24nO+53m+z/N9XjxCtGaTq70H5AwFyR8JUWAJIrEGKRw9QSJSIJIv9vIsIXKGQ2SbQ2QOhEjvD5LSd0x85xsiGnyEFQwjZDza59exIKUTIWSTIe5OhZA7QpQ7TvRdXSZSKnp37CGk40cUWv+hwHpM7kiQ7KEjMfiQhK7XfF/rRpDbj1DOBmmcD6JeDKJxBdG6TlTtCqESe/XzxyhFv3YuRI0b6legwgkycbfYdsStsUNyzPskdW4itLkPMK4e0rt2yMP1Q/q8JzwUMYl177NjHgWg23uMQZxr6u7jWlEltbYtdJ4jGufeUud8g2Jqj9vDLxCsG7vY/HtMiEwG9pgKnKjdv8vk87dYPD5iLl9HZ5nBuRNkvKWKuLBTtNvdDAfEg09fYRTp8rxE69xC8DzfZn37Ff7XO/h3/v6fXQLvdP8At9tF+pen0XT+wcI+mE0DKH6OQ9XWw+MVP1NrAawuLx0THjpsLoRc3TRlXfOoB5doH13mgdXDveEFlCYHlT3T2HuN6DN+Iis2kWJ1PzNLXlztjdSlXUFWKMO1+gz38iqWCSemQStCjWGGLssy/fZ1Rmc36B51o304jUQ9QIPBwqJSgi45HH3it6iTYvA9GQfPY7a7VNQmJVNWoUahaada10murAah5HctuWX1VDUZkNffJ+dOBVK5gsqmDkb1zRjKbqBJPktz7DfcS4pCE3Meq0qGs/oWxtQELkbFk3a7irZeCwpVqxhYd5/fFApSpA1ERP3I+x+EceqzL0jJTKdSXkJGXBTXvvqQugtfU34hAmOpFLmiEkOJhOLoc0SGx3H6bDzJ2SX8kJiBcF6iR9fSgsXmoLVZhVbXivLBn7T1mGnJz+DSR+9x5uNPKIoOR/Ldp4zolGSlSkhNlxKbcIOIc1eJvPgLl/PuEht/CaF/xM6Y/QkLS6t4/S/wbm7x184+i/16FJGfY2xSY3MuMjhixaGWoUuIoiHrOoVFtfSZHcx2NlKed5O5ZR+mbj3C6Pg4Pr+f9Q0fK+te8WNruNc2mbKaqb4S+d/3Vjf8rAReYmlR0i7NxLO2gWPWJR5y83TSivZmGh2mIYx9Zv4FhiQa7hAvoyIAAAAASUVORK5CYII=","aspectRatio":1.5151515151515151,"src":"/static/6b610e6d71ae94ca98fe2d3d5546e002/ee604/8b3a2e3afca619337d2d46aedf81bfa8.png","srcSet":"/static/6b610e6d71ae94ca98fe2d3d5546e002/69585/8b3a2e3afca619337d2d46aedf81bfa8.png 200w,\n/static/6b610e6d71ae94ca98fe2d3d5546e002/497c6/8b3a2e3afca619337d2d46aedf81bfa8.png 400w,\n/static/6b610e6d71ae94ca98fe2d3d5546e002/ee604/8b3a2e3afca619337d2d46aedf81bfa8.png 800w,\n/static/6b610e6d71ae94ca98fe2d3d5546e002/7d97b/8b3a2e3afca619337d2d46aedf81bfa8.png 842w","srcWebp":"/static/6b610e6d71ae94ca98fe2d3d5546e002/58556/8b3a2e3afca619337d2d46aedf81bfa8.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/6b610e6d71ae94ca98fe2d3d5546e002/61e93/8b3a2e3afca619337d2d46aedf81bfa8.webp 200w,\n/static/6b610e6d71ae94ca98fe2d3d5546e002/1f5c5/8b3a2e3afca619337d2d46aedf81bfa8.webp 400w,\n/static/6b610e6d71ae94ca98fe2d3d5546e002/58556/8b3a2e3afca619337d2d46aedf81bfa8.webp 800w,\n/static/6b610e6d71ae94ca98fe2d3d5546e002/cdb7b/8b3a2e3afca619337d2d46aedf81bfa8.webp 842w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3135-markdown","title":"Breathing Easier - Can Cannabis Reduce Inflammation Associated with COVID-19?","slug":"breathing-easier-can-cannabis-reduce-inflammation-associated-with-covid-19","content":"##When we've been through a tough time, we often say we can breathe easier. And if something is straightforward, it's \"as natural as breathing.\" \n\nBut for many people, breathing isn't easy or comfortable. From chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD to the \"air hunger\" of a severe anxiety attack, breathing troubles affect both adults and children worldwide.\n\n Medications including bronchodilators, antihistamines and corticosteroids are often used to treat breathing disorders. However, research reveals that cannabis and other natural approaches could help you breathe easier without many prescription drugs' side effects.\n\n### Cannabis Compounds May Make Breathing Easier\n\nRecent research suggests that natural approaches, including cannabis, can relieve the symptoms associated with some respiratory conditions.\n\nStudies continue to reveal how the many compounds and terpenes in cannabis can benefit the health of both body and mind, and some studies suggest that these compounds, especially cannabidiol, or CBD, can make breathing more manageable too. \n\nBut the situation is complicated.\n\nMuch of the Research on the respiratory effects of cannabis comes from studies that involve smoking – a favorite way to use cannabis. Those studies reveal a [mixed picture](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK425753) of benefits and potential risks for respiratory health. \n\nEven though smoking cannabis is less risky to the lungs and respiratory system than smoking cigarettes, the process still involves combustion, which creates toxins. Those toxins can irritate the airway and lungs, and over time, smoking cannabis frequently could make cell changes that lead to cancer and other respiratory illnesses. \n\nBut some research indicates that smoking cannabis rarely, about once or twice a month, could [help to improve symptoms](https://www.marijuanadoctors.com/conditions/pulmonary-fibrosis/) of COPD and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. \n\nResearchers believe that's because [CBD has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25356537/) that could reduce swelling in lung and bronchial tissues. THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol), the psychoactive compound that causes a euphoric high, can also [play a role](https://www.honestcbdinfo.com/cbd-science/inflammation/phytocannabinoids-benefits-for-lung-disease/) in reducing the inflammation associated with chronic lung diseases.\n\nSmoking cannabis may have some contradictory effects on breathing. But there appear to be [clearer benefits](https://www.fundacion-canna.es/en/idiopathic-pulmonary-fibrosis-endocannabinoid-system-and-cannabinoids) from using cannabis in other forms. CBD oils can be vaped or inhaled using diffusers or steam, which bypasses the risks of combustion. Teas made from boiled or steeped cannabis leaves can also help to relieve congestion, reduce inflammation and support the immune system overall. For some people, even edibles and topicals can provide symptom relief.\n\nAlong with acting directly on the respiratory system, cannabis may also help some breathing disorders' secondary symptoms. Many people with chronic breathing conditions such as COPD, asthma, and IPF also struggle with anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Cannabis has documented [properties for reducing anxiety and relieving stress](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/can-marijuana-help-with-chronic-pain-anxiety-and-insomnia) that can also trigger episodes of dyspnea.\n\n### Can Cannabis Reduce Lung Inflammation with COVID-19?\n\nScientists are now looking at cannabis as a possible adjunct therapy for the treatment and prevention of COVID-19. Although research is preliminary, [Forbes reports](https://www.forbes.com/sites/emilyearlenbaugh/2020/07/06/cannabis-may-reduce-deadly-covid-19-lung-inflammation-researchers-explain-why/?sh=42517a9b4d9d) that scientists are hopeful that it has \"potential for [reducing susceptibility to the disease](https://www.preprints.org/manuscript/202004.0315/v1), and even discussed whether it could be used as an [antiviral medication.\"](https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/CAN.2020.0035) Most of this research is focused on cannabis derived from CBD, a well-known anti inflammatory and how it may treat dangerous lung inflammation caused by the virus.\n\nOne of the biggest struggles medical personnel face when treating the novel coronavirus is reducing inflammation caused by the 'Cytokine storm\". This [cytokine superstorm](https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/cytokine-storm) is \"a severe immune reaction in which the body releases too many cytokines into the blood too quickly. Cytokines play an important role in normal immune responses, but having a large amount of them released in the body all at once can be harmful.\" Previous research has shown that CBD can reduce a number of pro-inflammatory cytokines, leading to reduced inflammation, without many of the negative side effects associated with pharmaceutical medications under review. \n\n### What Makes It Hard to Breathe?\n\nBreathing is controlled by the autonomous nervous system, which is why we don't have to remember to take a breath consciously. But the respiratory system that makes breathing possible is a complicated one with connections to the lungs, heart, and the central nervous system, so [there are many factors](https://www.webmd.com/lung/lung-diseases-overview) that can interfere with healthy breathing at any point in the process. \n\nCommon causes of breathing problems include:\n\n### 1. Allergies, Infections and Viruses\n\n Wheezing, coughing and difficulty breathing are often caused by allergens like pollen and mold. Most of the time, these breathing problems are short-lived and can be remedied by avoiding the allergen or taking an antihistamine. \n\nBut allergens can also trigger episodes of more severe breathing disorders like asthma. Likewise, viruses that cause colds and flu can also cause temporary breathing problems due to congestion in the sinuses and upper respiratory system. \n\n### 2. Respiratory Diseases\n\nRespiratory diseases can affect any part of the system, including the airways and lungs. Common respiratory conditions include asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a group of breathing disorders that includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. \n\nLung cancers, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), and cystic fibrosis are also respiratory diseases, as are acute conditions like pneumonia and pleurisy, an inflammation of the lining surrounding the lungs. Now we can add COVID-19 to this list as well.\n\n### 3. Neurological Conditions\n\nSome progressive neurological conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, and Alzheimer's disease also cause breathing problems because they affect the nerves and muscles that control the respiratory process.\n\n### 4. Dyspnea\n\nDyspnea is an umbrella term for several conditions that cause a feeling often described as \"shortness of breath,\" an inability to take in enough air when breathing, or a feeling of discomfort when breathing. \n\nViruses, bacteria, and even medications can cause dyspnea and respiratory infections and some systemic diseases, including anemia. But anxiety, fear, and stress can also cause dyspnea. In these situations, a surge of cortisol and adrenaline can trigger rapid breathing or a feeling of suffocation.\n\nThe causes of breathing troubles can range from mild and temporary to serious and debilitating, and that means many different treatments are available to address them. People with temporary congestion from allergies, a cold, or flu might get easy relief from over the counter decongestants and antihistamines. \n\nFor asthma and other chronic breathing conditions, inhalers and nebulizers infused with steroids and other anti-inflammatory medications can relax airways and reduce inflammation. \n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABQAAAANCAYAAACpUE5eAAAACXBIWXMAAAsTAAALEwEAmpwYAAADZ0lEQVQ4y2WTX0xbdRzF76sxRjejiTFZnMMZcawrlMLmKLIWGrsi0FIKtNDSlkJbWlra2pT+o3+g60gLi+U/ZZvCkrFEjUaMumXxycRME1+W+DQT3+aj8fnjr2h82cPNzc1NTs7nnPOVDEYd1tE+nBODeN1mgj4L0aCdeMRJJj6F0fghJ96UsTJt5K+vyvzx+Qq/H+S5Hx9mXt2GTt7CyQYZZ8610ihrRRo29zIxbmB6cohZ7yjRkJ3ERy7S81OUCgEcjhFeOytnO+bi8eEKT7/f5ZdanlrYhrdHRbesmVeE4AnxvNxwHmnc2o/baSLgGRHObCRjk+RSHhazfiqlCKGgk1ONLXxTifKwFOLXapg9r5kvcwHifVfoEoKvnjnPc6fP8aJ4Sw67Ed+UmXBgjPmok2zSw1J+luVimGo5Ti49S5daw9G1WR7vl3hyO8EX4RE+S7iZ015msqudN96W8fzpJuFQhjQl3NVRY3N2kZn72NnyUpgb12NsVJKsr6Y5qKb4+6c7/PndFg/Lc9ScvTzZDvNDxsr6jAnnUC/yxgs0NbUgeUR2c34r8f/cFYW7SinKWnme7Y8z7FSz3K0t8fT+Gj9vJrmX8ZEZ6OYoYedu0Mh+bpq4zYitXYmipQ2p3mwdt15ELu2ltBhite5uJcnuWpZbmwX2a0V+3EvxSHw/Ws3jUb9PUOCWrd1sxe34B3pQiixff6f5WcFr/wumjgVvbxW4tVPkaDvNb58s8G0xRHX8Kj7Ne8SGeqh4DejUKk7J2jAZ9HVkMyH/2LPIlQRbAnl3LceecFm7keIg7+fTtI/ooJYB1SUSo1pm9J1k6oVGXERmxpHczvr+LKIUB2kx5MKCn+v1UpZjouUEG6spbq7n2NkosCz+e3uvoFMqGVZdxCEaNonsoqKHsJhXJGBDmhCBet3DAtsmZjPJQsJLIRv4dzaVOOuVecIRj7gmE4dJGw8Kdg7mTHhEhj0Xmhm91MagRkWfVoOl/wOkMUs/LoeJGc8okeDEsWhBYGVTM7g9Njq0Ol5oaGVQp+Ve3MLXGQsPFu2E9SqMSgXm9lbk78rpaFbgUimRTCY9Y9YBITqEb9pyLFo/t8a2TnFOCk6+peCls0o0YtyboWHuhPo5DOrJGToIaC7i6mxH3aLAor7Mlvsq/wDtB0dZB5ZR8QAAAABJRU5ErkJggg==","aspectRatio":1.5037593984962405,"src":"/static/f3427e543dfabcf8186995538352d369/ee604/64e1f59a4380bba73ebeb1045c185bfa.png","srcSet":"/static/f3427e543dfabcf8186995538352d369/69585/64e1f59a4380bba73ebeb1045c185bfa.png 200w,\n/static/f3427e543dfabcf8186995538352d369/497c6/64e1f59a4380bba73ebeb1045c185bfa.png 400w,\n/static/f3427e543dfabcf8186995538352d369/ee604/64e1f59a4380bba73ebeb1045c185bfa.png 800w,\n/static/f3427e543dfabcf8186995538352d369/f3583/64e1f59a4380bba73ebeb1045c185bfa.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/f3427e543dfabcf8186995538352d369/58556/64e1f59a4380bba73ebeb1045c185bfa.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/f3427e543dfabcf8186995538352d369/61e93/64e1f59a4380bba73ebeb1045c185bfa.webp 200w,\n/static/f3427e543dfabcf8186995538352d369/1f5c5/64e1f59a4380bba73ebeb1045c185bfa.webp 400w,\n/static/f3427e543dfabcf8186995538352d369/58556/64e1f59a4380bba73ebeb1045c185bfa.webp 800w,\n/static/f3427e543dfabcf8186995538352d369/99238/64e1f59a4380bba73ebeb1045c185bfa.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3134-markdown","title":"4 Experience-Based Holiday Gift Ideas for An Unusual Holiday Season ","slug":"4-experience-based-holiday-gift-ideas-for-an-unusual-holiday-season","content":"It's the holiday season, and maybe you're thinking about gift-giving. But, this is not an ordinary year. The regular Black Friday specials, well, perhaps that just doesn't cut it. \n\nI don't know about you, but I look in my closet and maybe 80% of what's there - I don't wear at the moment. Ditto - for a lot of my life. This year is well, different. What you give to people in the age of COVID, matters. Why? Because, it's so unique and frankly, a lot of us are having a hard time.\n\nWe think this is a gift-giving season of self-care, for gifts that benefit our overall body, mind, and spirit. I might propose that every gift we give has a socially positive impact on the receiver. Maybe that's too ambitious, but let's give it a go!\n\n### 4 Experiential Gifts for the Holidays\n\n![The Oura Ring helps you with a better night's sleep.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_11_18_at_11_00_01_AM_17ea827ec7.png)\n\n### 1. The health report generates the Ethnicity Estimate report, which shows what regions in the world your ancestors were most likely linked to.\n\n![Peloton became the hot trend in exercise during COVID.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_11_18_at_11_45_32_AM_b9a62c1d94.png)\n\n### 4. Peloton Bike\n\nPre-Covid, I was a cardio addict and went to class after class, in addition to hiking and yoga. Post-Covid I've tried to keep up my fitness level, but it's been difficult. I've been working full time and homeschooling 3 kids and dealing with the ups and downs of uncertainty and stress. I knew I needed a new solution to get my ultra-self on and keep my muffin top at bay. \n\nSince day 1 of COVID, my best gal pals screamed at me to get a Peloton stationary bike. We did Soul Cycle together weekly and yes, Soul Cycle, has its own version of at-home cycling now. But ultimately, [Peloton](https://www.onepeloton.com/bike) is the answer to my exercise blues and has gotten me back in shape during the rolling lockdowns. Coronaviruses are responsible for many of the colds and flu that make the rounds every year. \n\nCOVID-19 is a relative of another virus that caused widespread illness a few years ago, called SARS – an acronym for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. That's why it has the official name of SARS-CoV2. And the illness it causes is called COVID-19, for Coronavirus Disease 2019.\n\nIn the early days of the pandemic, scientists believed that COVID-19 was mainly a respiratory disease. But now, research has shown that SARS-CoV2 affects processes that control many different systems throughout the body. \n\nThis information helps explain why it can damage the heart, lungs, and other organs and why it can also cause circulation problems, brain fog, and a loss of taste and smell. These symptoms all arise from the virus's interaction with a single protein on many cells' surface – the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, better known as ACE2.\n\n### ACE2: the Gateway to COVID-19\n\nACE2 is an enzyme [that plays a major role](https://theconversation.com/what-is-the-ace2-receptor-how-is-it-connected-to-coronavirus-and-why-might-it-be-key-to-treating-covid-19-the-experts-explain-136928) in the health of the cardiovascular system and lungs. It's formed from a chain of activity in the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, which plays a crucial role in regulating the body's blood volume and vascular resistance. \n\nThese factors [work together](https://www.cvphysiology.com/Blood%20Pressure/BP01) to influence the heart's pumping output and pressure in blood vessels throughout the body. That's why many people with hypertension and other circulatory problems take medications known as [ACE2 inhibitors](https://www.cebm.net/covid-19/angiotensin-converting-enzyme-ace-inhibitors-and-angiotensin-receptor-blockers-in-covid-19/), which may offer some protection against COVID-19 infection. \n\nBut ACE2 is also the entry point for SARS-CoV2, which takes over receptors on the surface of ACE2 cells. ACE2 cells are found in many parts of the body, but they're especially abundant in the lungs and small intestine, which accounts for the many respiratory and digestive symptoms of COVID-19. \n\nThey're also common in the vascular endothelium, a cell layer that lines the arteries and veins' walls. That helps to account for the many cardiovascular symptoms associated with COVID-19.\n\n### COVID and the Endocannbinoid System\n\nSARS-CoV2 enters the body by way of the ACE2 receptor cells, but it's helped along by a protein on the surface of ACE2 called [transmembrane serine protease 2, or TMPRSS2](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7359420/). This protein enables the virus to enter ACE2 cells and bind to their cell membranes so that the virus can increase within the lungs, cardiovascular system, and other organs. This process is the target of many studies on the treatment and prevention of COVID-19.\n\nNew research by scientists in Israel and the US indicates a [potential connection](https://www.preprints.org/manuscript/202004.0315/v1) between the activity of these proteins and the endocannabinoid system, a large network of cell receptors that respond both to cannabinoid chemicals produced by the body and compounds in the cannabis plant. That connection explains why cannabidiol, or CBD, and other cannabis compounds and terpenes may have the potential to treat symptoms of COVID-19.\n\n### The Endocannabinoid System: A Key to Fighting COVID-19?\n\nThe endocannabinoid system plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis or balance, among the body's many subsystems. Endocannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 are found in the brain, central nervous system, and many other tissues and organs. \n\nThey respond to the expression of natural cannabinoids 2AG and anandamide to support immune function, healthy cell development, and much more. And because they respond in similar ways to cannabis compounds, some researchers think that [cannabis could play a major role](https://jcannabisresearch.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s42238-020-00030-4) in the fight against COVID-19.\n\n### Cannabis Could Prevent COVID-19 Infection\n\nA Canadian study found that CBD extracts appear to \"downregulate\" or slow the activity of TMPRSS2. This is the protein that helps the novel Coronavirus enter ACE2 cells. In that way, CBD could prevent SARS-CoV2 proteins from infecting cells at all. Researchers speculate that this discovery could point to the development of simple CBD-based preventatives such as a mouthwash or throat rinse.\n\n### Cannabis Might Fight the Cytokine Storm\n\nCannabis also has [anti-inflammatory and immune-supporting properties](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-powerful-anti-inflammatory-effects-of-cannabis), and some research suggests that it could play an essential role in fighting one of the most serious complications of COVID-19 – the [cytokine storm](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fimmu.2020.01446/full).\n\nCytokines are proteins released by the immune system in response to an infection or inflammation. Generally, that's essential for healing. But in some situations, the immune system goes into overdrive, releasing a flood of cytokines into the bloodstream too quickly. Along with attacking the virus, these cytokines attack the body's cells and tissues, causing more inflammation and potentially shutting down the kidneys, liver, and other organs.\n\nBut recent research from Israel suggests that cannabis might inhibit cytokines' production, which could reduce the intensity of the immune response without the side effects of strong immunosuppressant medications. Terpenes can [boost the effects of cannabis compounds](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/terpene-and-cannabinoid-combos-that-boost-cannabiss-effects). Scientists from Tel Aviv University and the private sector found that a combination of CBD and terpene extracts could be as effective as dexamethasone, a steroid currently used to treat severe COVID-19 symptoms.\n\n### Conflicting Evidence Clouds Outcomes\n\nAlthough a number of studies suggest cannabis can have considerable benefits for treating COVID-19, some scientists caution that this research is limited and preliminary – and [there are also indications](https://www.forbes.com/sites/emilyearlenbaugh/2020/08/11/cannabis-shows-potential-to-help-and-harm-in-coronavirus-cases-experts-explain-why/?sh=5a97525633ea) that cannabis could be harmful to COVID-19 patients, especially when smoked.\n\nInhaling heated smoke of any kind can cause inflammation in the lungs and respiratory system cells, making them more vulnerable to infection with SARS-CoV2. Several studies have noted that in general smokers with COVID-19 are more prone to respiratory complications than non-smokers, including people who smoke cannabis. Likewise, some researchers suggest that vaping could also increase the risk of more severe respiratory symptoms of COVID-19.\n\nResearch on the benefits of cannabis for COVID-19 is still in the early stages. But recent studies suggest that this ancient remedy could be a powerful weapon against a very new disease.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.4705882352941178,"src":"/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/ee604/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png","srcSet":"/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/69585/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png 200w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/497c6/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png 400w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/ee604/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png 800w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/f3583/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png 1200w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/5707d/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png 1600w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/7620c/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.png 2054w","srcWebp":"/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/58556/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/61e93/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp 200w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/1f5c5/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp 400w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/58556/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp 800w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/99238/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp 1200w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/7c22d/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp 1600w,\n/static/516b09d15999e091bb7e631390764a03/83639/8f2f3ce04a0a88575aab64081801c7d7.webp 2054w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3131-markdown","title":"5 Killer Stress-Busting Combos - Popular Cannabis Strains Paired with Vitamins and Herbs","slug":"5-killer-stress-busting-combos-popular-cannabis-strains-paired-with-vitamins-and-herbs","content":"According to the American Psychological Association’s [2020 Stress in America Survey]( https://www.apa.org/news/press/releases/stress/2020/sia-mental-health-crisis.pdf), the US is in the midst of a national mental health crisis. From an intractable pandemic to economic uncertainty and political turmoil, a long list of unprecedented events is adding new stressors to an already stressed-out world. \n\nTo cope with a near-constant barrage of stressors large and small, mental health professionals and wellness advocates [recommend a variety of strategies](https://www.helpguide.org/articles/stress/stress-symptoms-signs-and-causes.htm#:~:text=Causes%20of%20stress,on%20you%20can%20be%20stressful.) including exercise, meditation, better sleep and a healthy diet. Severe stress, anxiety and depression can also be helped with medications that calm anxiety and boost the uptake of the brain’s natural “feel good” chemicals serotonin and dopamine. \n\nBut a growing body of research suggests that [cannabis can relieve stress and anxiety](https://www.healthline.com/health/marijuana-and-anxiety)\nwithout the side effects of many medications – and pairing it with stress-relieving supplements like valerian and kava kava might amplify its stress-busting powers. Below we list 5 stress-busting killer combos of popular cannabis strains paired with vitamins and herbs.\n\n### 5 Popular Marijuana Strains Combined with Herbs & Vitamins \n\nAlong with cannabis, a number of [herbs and vitamins](https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/vitamins-for-stress)\ncontain ingredients that can help to relieve symptoms of stress, and [many of these supplements](https://takecareof.com/articles/best-vitamins-supplements-for-stress-and-anxiety) can be combined with cannabis for an extra boost of calming chemicals during stressful times. Here’s a list of five cannabis and supplement combinations that can calm stress and relieve anxiety. Mix and match them as you like, since there are no known negative interactions between cannabis and any of these natural substances.\n\n### 1. ACDC and Kava Kava\n\nACDC is a very high CBD strain that has virtually no THC. It’s evenly balanced between indica and sativa, and it’s often used to “take the edge off” experiences that can cause stress or anxiety. Kava Kava derives from the root of the Kava (piper methysticum) plant and contains kavalactone, a substance that interferes with the breakdown of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a chemical that calms activity in the central nervous system and promotes feelings of relaxation and comfort. \n\n### 2. Grandaddy Purple and Rhodolia\n\n[Grandaddy Purple]( https://www.hellomd.com/strains/granddaddy-purple) promotes a relaxed, happy feeling along with relieving insomnia and pain. This high-indica strain is regularly used for easing the symptoms of stress and anxiety. It can be paired with rhodolia (rhodolia rosea), an herb whose roots work as an [adaptogen](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/adaptogens-what-are-they-and-how-to-combine-them-with-cbd) – a substance that boosts the body’s natural responses to \\stress. Wellness advocates say that rhodolia can also help with insomnia, chronic fatigue and stress-related burnout.\n\n### 3. OG Kush and Melatonin\n\nThe venerable [OG Kush](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/og-kush) ranks among the best cannabis strains for stress relief. This high-THC strain causes relaxation and an uplifting euphoria, and it may also help with insomnia, anxiety and migraines. Melatonin is a hormone made naturally in the pineal gland, and it’s typically released after dark to prepare the body for sleep. But melatonin may also relieve symptoms of stress. A recent study found that melatonin could reduce stress and anxiety before surgery as well as the prescription sedative midazolam.\n\n\n### 4. Girl Scout Cookies and Valerian\n\n[Girl Scout Cookies](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/gsc) is a potent indica dominant hybrid strain that may relieve stress, reduce pain and combat symptoms of depression. Valerian (from the root of the Valeriana officinalis plant) has been called “nature’s Valium” for its ability to reduce stress and anxiety, and it also supports sleep. Research indicates that, like Kava Kava, it helps to inhibit the breakdown of GABA in the brain. Valerian also contains compounds that seem to inhibit excessive activity in the amygdala, a part of the brain associated with fear and other strong emotional responses.\n\n\n### 5. Jack Herer and B-Complex Vitamins\n\n[Jack Herer](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/jack-herer) is a classic combination of indica and sativa strains that’s known for its ability to boost concentration and focus, but users also say it helps to reduce stress and symptoms of anxiety. B-Complex vitamins include the full range of 8 B vitamins, which are essential for transforming food into energy and keeping the brain and heart healthy. But B vitamins can also lower levels of homocysteine, an amino acid associated with stress that also plays a role in the development of blood clots and artery damage. \n\n### Understanding Stress\n\nStress is often described as the natural “fight or flight” response to a perceived threat of some kind. It’s a protective response that keeps us energized, alert and aware of our surroundings during a crisis, a dangerous situation – or even an exciting, pleasant event like getting married or moving to a new city. The stress response can also help people rise to meet challenges like making a speech, playing a competitive game or studying for a difficult exam. \n\nWhen the brain perceives a threat or recognizes a new challenge, the nervous system releases excitatory hormones including adrenaline (epinephrine), norepinephrine and cortisol. These hormones act on multiple systems throughout the body to prepare it for meeting the threat. The heart beats faster, pumping blood to the muscles, blood pressure rises, and sensory systems become hyper-acute. \n\nUnder normal circumstances, once the stressful event is past, stress levels would decrease and the body would relax and return to a more normal state. But in this modern world, especially one affected by the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic and multiple other crises, the body’s stress responses may remain in high gear virtually all the time. When stress responses are always “on,” the flood of excitatory hormones can disrupt health in a variety of ways.\n\nChronic stress can exacerbate existing health problems or create new ones such as insomnia, weight loss or gain, digestive problems and “brain fog” or trouble with concentration and memory. High stress levels can accelerate the aging process and raise the risk of heart attack or stroke. Stress can also contribute to mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.\n\nA variety of self-care options can help to reduce stress, such as exercising more or trying relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation. Prescription medications such as Prozac, Xanax or Celexa can also help to manage symptoms of stress and anxiety. \n\nBut some research indicates that the relaxing properties of cannabis or cannabis compounds combined with calming [herbal and vitamin supplements](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/5-natural-supplements-to-boost-your-mental-health) can offer relief for many people struggling with chronic stress.\n\n### Cannabis Relieves Stress and Anxiety\n\nOne reason for the enduring popularity of cannabis is its calming, relaxing and lightly euphoric effect. Compounds in the cannabis sativa plant, mainly cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, act on the brain’s neurological pathways to promote the expression of mood-boosting chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and the body’s natural calming cannabinoid anandamide. \n\nA [recent study](https://www.healtheuropa.eu/cannabis-combats-stress/93193/) from Washington State University found that inhaling cannabis could lower stress levels. That’s a key change from previous studies, which used cannabis in pill form in a laboratory setting, rather than exploring the effects of cannabis as it’s normally consumed. \n\nIn this study, researchers found that the largest reduction in stress came from 10 or more puffs of cannabis strains high in both CBD and THC, while just two puffs of any kind of cannabis could reduce symptoms of anxiety.\n\nIt’s important to note that for some people, cannabis can also cause feelings of paranoia and anxiety, particularly when it’s high in THC, the chemical responsible for the euphoric high. But the Washington State study provides solid scientific support for the stress relieving benefits of [certain kinds of cannabis](https://topscannabis.com/6-of-the-best-weed-strains-for-stress-anxiety/).\n\n\nStress affects just about everyone, although in very different ways. But the “killer combo” of the most relaxing cannabis strains and supplements can give stressed-out people a new and natural way to cope.\n\n\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/ee604/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png","srcSet":"/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/69585/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png 200w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/497c6/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png 400w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/ee604/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png 800w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/f3583/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.png 1200w","srcWebp":"/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/58556/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/61e93/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp 200w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/1f5c5/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp 400w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/58556/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp 800w,\n/static/dba6481db20bf5fdd73c77f61d618bfc/99238/9dc05d4f2c5901a43ac125af873a7cf7.webp 1200w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_3122-markdown","title":"Supporting the Immune System During Cold and Flu Season with Plant-Based Supplements ","slug":"supporting-the-immune-system-during-cold-and-flu-season-with-plant-based-supplements","content":"Although you can get sick any time of the year, [cold and flu season](https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/it-cold-or-flu-prevention-symptoms-treatments) typically lasts from as early as October through as late as May. Each year, [millions of people contract](https://www.cdc.gov/dotw/common-cold/index.html) these two common viruses, with the average adult getting around 2-3 colds annually. \n\nWe can all recognize the symptoms — runny nose, sore throat, coughing, sneezing, and body aches — as soon they start appearing. With the weather changing, it’s essential to stay in good health and keep our immune system strong. Luckily, there are ways to support your immune system so that you are less susceptible to getting sick. \n\n### Your Immune System\n\nThe immune system is responsible for protecting your body from bacteria, viruses, and other toxins that may enter the body. Though the immune system functions automatically, there are ways we can weaken it or boost its ability to defend us against germs. \n\n- A few ways to boost the immune system are: \n- Eating a nutrient dense diet \n- Committing to a more consistent sleep schedule \n- Staying active with exercise and body movement\n\nStress also plays a significant role in weakening our immunity. When the body is stressed, its ability to fight off pathogens is reduced. Normal levels of day-to-day stress are manageable, but [chronic stress can significantly impact immune function](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4465119/) and can cause headaches, ulcers, and other conditions. \n\nFinding ways to reduce stress in your life is a good place to start, but if you find it difficult, then incorporating plant-based foods and supplements may be useful. Certain herbs and plants help boost your immunity system by helping your body respond better to stress. These types of substances are called adaptogens. \n\n### What Are Adaptogens?\n\nAdaptogens are a class of herbs and mushrooms that support the body’s physical, chemical, or biological ability to adapt to stress. There are some that you can take as supplements and others you can eat, or that can be brewed to make tea or tinctures. \n\nThese herbs have been consumed by various cultures throughout history to help prevent and fight off illnesses. Studies have shown that adaptogens [offer a stress-protective effect](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3991026/). This aids our central nervous system by encouraging neuroprotective, anti-fatigue, and even antidepressive activity. \n\nAdaptogens also influence [hormone production](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6240259/) and other physiological responses to stress, including energy levels. Similar to adaptogens, cannabis may provide cold and flu relief via immune system modulation system along with other plant medicines like mushrooms\n\n### How Cannabis May Help the Immune System\n\nMany studies have demonstrated cannabis’ potential to support the immune system. Both THC and CBD have been shown to possess [antiviral and antifungal properties](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3165946/). Antiviral substances work by inhibiting the development of target pathogens instead of merely killing them, like antibiotics. \n\nCBD in particular, can help with bacteria that are not responding to medication and studies have even shown CBD can address [antibiotic resistance](https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/03/200324131833.htm). Cannabis may also have immunosuppressive power. A recent study showed that phytocannabinoids “deeply influence immune functions, thereby regulating inflammation, autoimmunity, antitumor...responses.” \n\nCannabis can also manage [stress and anxiety](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/anxiety). One study found that cannabis may help regulate stress and depression symptoms, which helps improve your immune function. In [another study](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165032718303100?via%3Dihub), scientists demonstrated that inhaling cannabis can positively impact your body’s stress response. \n\nResearch has revealed that patients inhaling cannabis experienced a notable reduction in their stress symptoms in 89.3% of sessions. The study also found that women perceived a more significant reduction in symptoms of anxiety than men.\n\n### Medicinal Mushrooms Role in Immune Support\n\nMedicinal mushrooms have been used throughout history in traditional and folk medicines to aid in treating many ailments. These non-psychoactive powerhouses have found their place in modern science, as they have shown to improve the body’s immune response. \n\nMushrooms work in the body by [modulating the immune system](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4684115/) to fight against viral, bacterial, and parasitic pathogens.
