Over the past eight years, much discussion—and debate—has flowed online, around the water cooler and over dinner at home as to who’s related to whom, what army will prevail and why Cersei won’t just die already.\n\nAnd so, it’s with a heavy heart that fans head into the series finale this weekend. We all know that this is the end of a fantastic era in television. No more nail-biting, on-the-edge-of-your-seat Sundays with Jon Snow, Arya Stark and the mother of dragons.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nFolks are going to have to find a way to fill the empty void that GoT once occupied. Cue tears and sniffles here. OK, OK. It’s not over yet. We’ve got one more thrilling episode to watch before the fat lady sings. So, let’s make it the best damn viewing party—of one or many—ever.\n\nHow can we do that? With cannabis, of course. HelloMD’s GoT-obsessed team members have come up with their favorite marijuana strains to enhance this Sunday’s series closer. And they give their predictions for who will take the iron throne.\n\n### 1. Granddaddy Purple Cannabis Strain\n\n![Granddaddy Purple cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/articles-5abd6050f24d1300077ccba6-827dc995-af79-4cb2-81a3-c78d526915a8/original.jpg)\n\n**Danielle L., health and wellness writer:** “For the Game of Thrones finale, I’ll go with Granddaddy Purple since it’s a mellow cannabis strain that tends to enhance every situation. Also, this strain tends to make me happy and sleepy—two things I don’t anticipate being at the end of this series.\n\n“I doubt I’ll be happy for two reasons: 1) I can’t believe that it’s over; and 2) in all of the interviews I’ve read or seen with George R.R. Martin, he’s stated that fans probably won’t be happy about the ending, but it’ll be somewhat acceptable.\n\n“For predictions on who'll take the iron throne, I’m tempted to say no one. But I’ll go with Sansa, because even if Daenerys burns King’s Landing to the ground, Sansa will hopefully be chillin’ and smirking up north. Plus, at this point she's the most capable politician.”\n\n### 2. Gelato Cannabis Strain\n\n![Gelato cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-3dcb5658-62dd-4908-827a-ee49973b1281/original.png)\n\n**Ryan G., customer service lead:** “This final season of GoT has been really stressful. So, before every episode, I consume Gelato #42 to help calm my nerves. It’s a perfect hybrid for shows like this, because it eases my anxiety, but keeps me alert enough to catch anything that may be a foreshadowing.\n\n“I also enjoy Gelato, because it has a sweeter sorbet-like taste, which makes me feel like I’m sipping some fine wine with Tyrion before he storms King’s Landing with his sister Daenerys. Yes, that’s right. I said sister.\n \n“I think that Jon Snow will give up the iron throne to go live with the Wildlings in the north. Sansa will be the one to take the iron throne and rule with Tyrion as her hand. I also think that Tyrion will be revealed as a Targaryen, which makes him the third head of the dragon. \n\n“Unfortunately, Dany won’t make it, because her lust for power will drive her crazy like her late father, the mad king. ... It makes me sad, but no one else will make it to the end to be able to see Cersei dethroned.”\n \n### 3. Jillybean Cannabis Strain\n\n![Jillybean cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-98489ae1-8cc6-4c55-9e9b-7e64dd93fd8e/original.png)\n\n**Gabby B., content manager:** “We’re hosting a potluck viewing party for the GoT finale. Since I’ll be with friends, I want to offer around a cannabis strain that everyone will like and that’s good for socializing in a group. So, I’ll likely have some Jillybean on hand. \n\n“Jillybean is great when you have a group with varying tolerance levels, as the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is typically somewhere around 13–18%, so it won’t make my cannabis newbie friends feel racy or paranoid.\n\n“But my friends who are seasoned marijuana consumers will also enjoy themselves. Jillybean is uplifting yet mellow, so I think it'll be perfect when watching and discussing the show with others, and will have people feeling social but relaxed.\n \n“I also love that Jillybean’s flavor profile and aroma are citrusy—limonene is my favorite cannabis terpene. It makes me feel happy, and I like that it’s been shown to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, too. \n \n“As for who I think will win the throne, I think Jon Snow will get over his shock about his lover being his aunt, and he and Daenerys will get married and rule all seven kingdoms together.”\n\n### 4. Lamb’s Bread Cannabis Strain\n\n![Lamb’s Bread cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-7368e5ac-81f8-4a4f-9711-560813918e8f/original.png)\n\n**Sonya T., social media manager:** “I think I’ll go with Lamb’s Bread for the GoT finale. It’s my favorite strain for any occasion; it’s both calming and keeps me alert while being creatively engaged. GoT is one of those shows where anything can happen, and the writing and scenes are pretty intricate, so I like to stay aware with the least amount of anxiety possible.\n \n“As far as who will get the iron throne? Hmmm … I’m going with Jon Snow for this one. He’s level-headed and a great leader. Although, I want it to be Arya, my personal fave, I think Jon is the most equipped for it and the most favored among the people.”\n\n### 5. Blue Dream Cannabis Strain\n\n![Blue Dream cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-5d9f9467-bcbd-4314-b19e-f07ac22bdf50/original.png)\n\n**Miles A., editorial associate:** “Blue Dream would be my cannabis strain pick for the finale. With its balance of sativa and indica elements, Blue Dream imparts calming effects that are ideal for easing you through the roller coaster finale, while the body high from this hybrid will help get folks into the scene that unfolds, specifically when Sansa Stark finally takes her place on the iron throne. \n\n“After years of having a front row seat to see how the game is played from Westeros’ most wicked schemers, Cersei Lannister and Littlefinger, Sansa is primed and ready. I think Sansa’s the most fit to rule, because she’s the most practical and rational. Case in point, she made sure Winterfell had enough food supplies for its army before having to fight the undead, and she tried to make sure that army got enough rest before starting the long trek to the capital. \n\n“With Brienne to lead her queensguard and the backing of the North, the Vale and Riverrun, Sansa can swoop in once all of the carnage at King’s Landing has come to an end, uniting the rest of the seven kingdoms under the lady of Winterfell’s rule.”\n\nPhoto credit: Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. I know I am. \n\nIt seems like every time cannabis comes up in a TV show, all we see are lazy, stoner stereotypes. Sometimes, the cannabis becomes a plot point where the characters are arrested, lose a job, or mess up something important because of their marijuana consumption. If you believe this representation, you may think all cannabis consumers are lazy, incompetent, irresponsible or otherwise unable to live a happy and productive life. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nOf course, research on cannabis consumption suggests the exact opposite. Studies have shown [cannabis consumers are, on average, better educated, happier and more financially successful than those who don’t use cannabis](https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2017/06/28/marijuana-users-higher-incomes-social-happy-study_a_23006469/). But for some reason, this isn’t usually the message when marijuana is portrayed in our popular media. \n\nIf you’re a cannabis consumer, you may feel alienated or misunderstood when these misleading themes suddenly pop up in your favorite show. Even some shows aimed at cannabis consumers, like the failed Netflix show “Disjointed,” seem to play into these negative stereotypes. \n\nThat’s why I love seeing TV shows that casually embrace a more positive, accurate and normalizing view of cannabis. These shows aren’t focused on marijuana specifically, but they include likable and functional characters who consume cannabis in healthy and positive ways, without unrealistic, negative repercussions. \n\nHere are four TV shows that are breaking the lazy, incompetent stoner stereotypes by featuring high-functioning, thoughtful characters—who also happen to consume marijuana. \n\nRELATED: [STUDIES BUST THE STEREOTYPE OF THE LAZY, OUT-OF-SHAPE STONER](https://hellomd.com/articles/studies-bust-the-stereotype-of-the-lazy-out-of-shape-stoner/)\n\n### 1. “Grace and Frankie” Depicts Realistic Cannabis-Loving Characters\n\nPerhaps the most notable show on this list is the Netflix Originals “[Grace and Frankie](https://www.netflix.com/title/80017537).” The show focuses on an unlikely friendship between two women who are thrown together when their husbands come out as gay and leave them for each other. \n\nFrankie, an artsy hippie, is a regular cannabis consumer and is shown enjoying the plant throughout the show. Her counterpart, Grace, is a bit more uptight and doesn’t regularly consume cannabis. But we do see her try it from time to time to relax when things get particularly stressful. \n\nOther characters, such as Grace’s two adult daughters, nonchalantly have marijuana throughout the show, too. What’s great about “Grace and Frankie” is that cannabis consumption comes up fairly regularly and is portrayed in a very realistic way. The characters have cannabis responsibly, and we see how it relaxes them and helps them process the challenges that they face.\n\nIf you’re looking for an entertaining dramedy with realistic cannabis-loving characters, “Grace and Frankie” is the one to try. \n\n### 2. “The Orville” Shows Us a Future Where Cannabis Is Accepted\n\nIf sci-fi is more your taste, another show to check out is “[The Orville](https://www.fox.com/the-orville/)” on Fox. You may not expect to see cannabis in this futuristic sci-fi comedy, which parodies “Star Trek.”\n\nBut in the second episode of the series we learn that cannabis is still around in the future, and it seems to be totally legal and accepted. Kelly, the second in command, uses the replicator to produce a cannabis edible, and then reminisces with Ed, the starship captain, about times when they smoked marijuana in the past. \n\nWhile cannabis doesn’t come up often in the series, this nod to the plant creates a vision of the future where cannabis is so accepted that the two highest-ranking officers on a military vessel can casually order some up at a moment’s notice. Even in an imaginary future, it’s nice to see powerful characters who enjoy a little marijuana and don’t suffer any negative repercussions because of it. \n\n### 3. “Westside” Features a Hard-Working, Cannabis-Consuming Musician \n\n“[Westside](https://www.netflix.com/title/80201862)” is another original Netflix creation that shows a positive side to cannabis. This reality series follows a group of musicians as they try to put on a showcase of their music.\n\nThe show portrays the struggles and challenges that go on behind the scenes for each musician, and we see several characters struggling with alcohol addiction. While we see many negative impacts throughout the show from characters drinking, cannabis plays a much more positive role. \n\nThe one character who’s shown consuming marijuana, Leo Gallo, says that it helps him get creative. Leo is one of the most responsible and hard-working characters on the show, and we never see cannabis cause him problems.\n\nWhile other musicians are missing shows, getting into fights, and regularly getting blackout drunk, Leo is focused on the music. Cannabis only seems to help with this focus. \n\nThis reality show shines a light on how cannabis can play a healthy and functional role in a person’s life. \n\n### 4. “The Magicians” Portrays Realistic Marijuana Consumption in an Enchanted World\n\nIf “The Orville” bringing cannabis to space intrigued you, you may be interested in another show that puts cannabis in an imaginary world. In the SyFy show “[The Magicians](https://www.syfy.com/themagicians),” the characters wield magical powers and travel to an enchanted world called Fillory, where they become kings and queens. \n\nThroughout the series, we see the loveable and humorous character, Josh, consuming cannabis. Sometimes, he ingests the plant to cope with life’s stresses, such as when magic stops working. Other times, he uses it to celebrate, like after he becomes king or at wild parties with his friend, the god Bacchus. \n\nStill, we never see any big negative repercussions coming from Josh’s cannabis consumption. Josh is just your average guy who likes to smoke marijuana. For an unrealistic fantasy show, it gives a pretty realistic view of cannabis. \n\nWhether you’re into drama, comedy, reality, fantasy or sci-fi, there are so many great TV programs that are beginning to show cannabis in a positive light. Hopefully, in the future we’ll see even more efforts made to normalize cannabis.\n\nIn the meantime, watching these shows is one way to support the programs and artists who advocate for cannabis through these positive portrayals. \n\nPhoto credit: bbernard/Shutterstock.com\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. Spring is officially here, which means we can finally venture out of our homes and enjoy the outdoors once again. \n\nThe spring season presents a great opportunity to go on vacation, especially if you live in a northerly state that’s endured a long, cold winter.\n\nWith more and more states legalizing adult-use marijuana, why not turn this spring getaway into a cannabis-themed vacation? Here we’ve rounded up the top six cannabis destinations for the season.\n \nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### 1. San Francisco Is a Must-See Destination for Cannabis Aficionados\n\n![San Francisco skyline](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-af2570b1-0374-42ba-b1bc-566299ffedc1/original.png)\n\nSan Francisco is at the top of most people’s lists of cannabis-friendly destinations. The famously progressive city is where the medical marijuana movement first began, and it’s long taken a tolerant approach to cannabis. \n\nThis is even more true now that California has legalized recreational marijuana for adults. There are plenty of amazing cannabis-related activities to take part in, including [cannabis walking tours](https://www.greenguide.tours/home) and [cannabis-themed yoga sessions](https://www.businessinsider.com/ganja-yoga-review-san-francisco-2017-1). \n\nIf you’re there in April be sure to head to [Hippie Hill in Golden Gate Park for 420 celebrations](https://www.420hippiehill.com/), which have been an annual tradition in the city since the 1970s. \n\nRELATED: [5 CANNABIS-FRIENDLY, LATE SUMMER GETAWAYS](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-cannabis-friendly-late-summer-getaways/)\n \n### 2. Denver’s Long History of Legal Cannabis Means There’s Plenty to Do\n\n![Colorado border sign](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-f06ffd9f-fe31-48e4-aaf4-100f3cb3d034/original.png)\n \nDenver is arguably the top cannabis destination spot in the country thanks to Colorado having been the first state (along with Washington) to legalize adult-use marijuana back in 2012. \n\nSince that time, an entire cannabis tourism industry has built up in the state, with Denver as its hub. Many cannabis tour companies operate in the Mile-High City and they offer myriad cannabis-themed options, including:\n\n* [Cannabis cooking classes](https://coloradocannabistours.com/denver-classes-attractions/#cooking-class)\n* Night tours of the city’s food trucks (perfect for when you get the munchies)\n* Excursions to Colorado’s gorgeous ski and snowboard slopes \n\nIf you’re looking for a cannabis vacation where all of the details are taken care of and you can just relax and have fun, then Denver is probably your best bet.\n \n### 3. Portland’s Cannabis Scene Reflects the Quirky Personality of the City\n\n![Portland-neon-sign](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-6405d669-53b8-42fe-b13a-484a2335fcc9/original.jpg)\n\nCity of hipsters, third-wave coffee shops, and just general—but delightful—weirdness, Portland makes for an excellent cannabis holiday. While the West Coast city boasts an array of things for the cannabis traveler to see and do, we suggest a [cannabis bus tour](https://www.travelportland.com/list/cannabis-tours-portland/). There are a number to choose from, including those that visit local craft growers, dispensaries and nearby scenic spots. \n\nThe tours use party buses, meaning you can smoke while on them, traveling from stop to stop. Thanks to Oregon’s strict quality regulations, the cannabis available from the many distinctive and beautifully designed shops is of a consistently high standard. \n\nLike every other destination on this list, smoking cannabis is prohibited in public and most of the big hotel chains have rules against it. However, boutique hotels and cannabis-friendly Airbnbs are available that cater to cannabis travelers.\n\nRELATED: [5 LOUNGES WHERE YOU CAN ENJOY CANNABIS IN PUBLIC](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-lounges-where-you-can-enjoy-cannabis-in-public/)\n \n### 4. Boston Has Become an East Coast Hub for Cannabis Travel\n\n![Boston at night](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-97e266e3-e854-4383-91d9-69ae6eb81042/original.png)\n\nOn the East Coast, Massachusetts offers some of the most progressive marijuana laws. Late last year, the state legalized the sale of up to one ounce of cannabis to adults. \n\nWhile the recreational cannabis industry is young, tour packages offering airport pickup, guides, and visits to Boston’s local dispensaries already exist. Plus, Boston itself just seems to have a load of things to do that are perfect experiences after consuming cannabis. \n\nHead to the New England Aquarium—one of the largest in the country—to spend hours mesmerized by the countless fish, sharks and jellyfish floating by. Or, if you have a case of the munchies, a trip to the Faneuil Hall Marketplace is in order.\n\nRELATED: [4 CANNABIS-FRIENDLY B&BS TO ELEVATE YOUR VACATION](https://hellomd.com/articles/4-cannabis-friendly-bandbs-to-elevate-your-vacation/)\n \n### 5. Vermont Offers a Rustic, Laid-Back Cannabis Vacation \n\n![Vermont mountains](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-1cf8e6a1-9d0f-4cbe-967a-81b29a00934a/original.png)\n \nFor a completely different side of New England, make your way to Vermont. True to its progressive reputation, the Green Mountain State legalized recreational cannabis use in 2018, although it’s still illegal to sell or distribute it. \n\nSo, if you’re from out-of-state, you’ll have to rely on the kindness of strangers to “gift” their own homegrown cannabis to you. Given that Vermonters are a famously friendly bunch, finding someone to share their cannabis may not be as challenging as it sounds. While the lack of a legal retail sector means there’s less cannabis tourism infrastructure here than in other legal marijuana states have, that may not be a big problem. \n\nAfter all, Vermont is where you go if you’re looking for small town charm, sugar shacks and beautiful nature retreats. Those are things that can be enjoyed with cannabis without the need of a tour group. You’ll also find plenty of small hotels and Airbnbs that are cannabis-friendly.\n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS-FRIENDLY HONEYMOON DESTINATIONS](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-friendly-honeymoon-destinations/)\n\n### 6. For a Cannabis Trip Like No Other, Head to Las Vegas\n\n![Las Vegas strip](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-bfbbf4ef-7d1a-4269-abf1-a21dcb657f44/original.png)\n\nWalking down the Las Vegas Strip at night is a mind-bending experience even without any psychoactive substances—so just imagine what it would be like after taking cannabis. Of course, Nevada, like every other legal marijuana state, prohibits public consumption of cannabis, but you’re allowed to consume cannabis on private property that permits it and then take a stroll down The Strip. \n\nThe big hotels mostly prohibit cannabis use, but you can find lots of homestays that are more accepting. You can either visit one of the nearly 50 marijuana dispensaries in the city or you could have your products delivered to your cannabis-friendly accommodations. And since this is Vegas, there are tons of things you can do on your cannabis vacation—think about how fun and eye-opening a Cirque de Soleil show would be after consuming some premium cannabis. \n\nPhoto credits: Harry Beugelink/Shutterstock.com (main image), [Jack Finnigan](https://unsplash.com/photos/7UgZthqkK9o) (San Francisco image), [Kait Herzog](https://unsplash.com/photos/6vWD_xnzPuU) (Denver image), [Zack Spear](https://unsplash.com/photos/ZB_Ns0hVZNk) (Portland image), [Zoltan Kovacs](https://unsplash.com/photos/_pIkJUaE1hc) (Boston image), [Patrick Bald](https://unsplash.com/photos/HdgZMuaKUsk) (Vermont image), [Nicola Tolin](https://unsplash.com/photos/bKx2zZUvv9k) (Las Vegas image)\n \nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. But while these new laws allow for private consumption, there are very few options for those of us who’d like to enjoy cannabis in more public settings. \n\nGoing out for a drink at a bar, club or restaurant is a great way to celebrate, spend time with friends or meet new people. If you’re an alcohol drinker, you have plenty of social spots to choose from.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nBut for cannabis consumers, it’s a different story. There are aren’t many public places where you can go to hang out and mingle while smoking or vaping marijuana. \n\nBut while these cannabis lounges are few and far between, they do exist. They’re even becoming more popular as different areas update their laws to allow for these social cannabis havens. \n\nHere are five fantastic spaces around the globe that are a lot like a bar, coffee shop or club—but they allow patrons to enjoy cannabis as part of the experience. \n\n\n### 1. La Tertulia Coffeeshop in Amsterdam, Netherlands\n\n![La Tertulia Coffeeshop, Amsterdam](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-fe7a3038-19da-4ee0-ace3-1d640702083d/original.png)\n\nIf we’re talking about cannabis lounges, we have to start our tour in Amsterdam. This city has had legal cannabis coffee shops since the ’70s and has long been the primary destination for cannabis tourists looking for a social cannabis experience. Amsterdam boasts hundreds of shops where tourists can stop by to buy and enjoy cannabis.\n\nIf you’re not sure where to go, try [La Tertulia](http://www.coffeeshoptertulia.com/html/coffeeshopwelcome.htm). This cozy, little family business has been around since the ’80s and is run by a mother-daughter pair. It’s known for its relaxed atmosphere and an iconic mural of Vincent van Gogh that’s painted outside. \n\nInside the calming coffee shop, you can find relaxing music, a variety food and drinks, and plenty of room to sit down and chill out. You can settle down by their crystal garden and soak in the energy from their collection of crystals, fossils and meteorites, or go upstairs for views of the canal. In the warmer months, step outside to the canal-side terrace to enjoy Amsterdam’s outdoor beauty and entertaining people watching. \n\nLa Tertulia coffee shop also offers a wider array of smoking accessories than what you can usually find in Amsterdam. While most coffee shops there only sell pre-rolled joints for smoking flower, La Tertulia also offers a selection of vaporizers and water pipes for visitors to enjoy. \n\n### 2. Barbary Coast Lounge in San Francisco, CA\n\n![Barbary Coast cannabis lounge](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-e003f76e-eb79-4215-8620-dad245e25f57/original.png)\n\nThe U.S. also has some fantastic cannabis lounges. While most areas with legal cannabis don’t have laws allowing for this type of lounge, San Francisco has allowed for a small number of cannabis consumption lounges to pop up around the city. These vary in terms of whether they allow smoking or vaping only, but they offer a great way for S.F. natives and tourists alike to step into a bar-like atmosphere where marijuana is allowed. \n\nOne of the most popular lounges is in [Barbary Coast](https://barbarycoastsf.com/), a swanky S.F. marijuana dispensary with decor reminiscent of a 1920s speakeasy. The elegant lounge features deep red brocade wallpaper, hardwood floors, leather seating and delicate stained-glass chandeliers. \n\nUnfortunately, this isn’t like an Amsterdam coffee shop where you can just hang out all day. Given its popularity, Barbary coast has a 30-minute limit for patrons to spend consuming cannabis in their gorgeous lounge space. \n\nRELATED: [TAKE A TOUR OF CALIFORNIA WINE & CANNABIS COUNTRY](https://hellomd.com/articles/take-a-tour-of-california-wine-and-cannabis-country/)\n\n### 3. Mon Ami Social Club in Barcelona, Spain\n\n![Mon Ami cannabis club](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-8e8910a9-0e18-468d-ac88-a1d18950b781/original.png)\n\nAnother international city with a thriving cannabis social scene is Barcelona, Spain. While cannabis consumption and possession are both illegal in public, the city allows for private cannabis social clubs where members can buy and take cannabis. Members pay a fee to join (usually around 20 euros) and then make donations to obtain cannabis once inside. These clubs have dispensaries as well as lounge areas, and often have drinks and snacks available, too. \n\nStill, it can be tricky to become a member of one of these marijuana social clubs, since you need to be invited—and not all clubs accept tourists. Unfortunately, the ones that do take tourists are often expensive with poor quality. A friend stayed in Barcelona for months and only found overpriced tourist traps when it came to cannabis lounges. \n\nWhen I traveled there, I found it very helpful to use a marijuana tour service. The one I used, [Barcelona Weed Tour](https://barcelonaweedtour.com/), found the perfect places for me to go, got my invitations lined up and took me around town on a customized tour. \n\nMy favorite cannabis lounge in Barcelona was [Mon Ami](https://www.instagram.com/monamibcn/?hl=en). This is a bigger club compared with others I saw there and had a great selection of products for very reasonable donations.\n\nIts smoking lounge was spacious and comfortable, with big leather couches arranged around coffee tables. The lounge also had a pool table, a variety of board games, a snack bar and even a live DJ at times. The vibe was chill and relaxed with groups of friends sitting around smoking, playing games or chatting. \n\n### 4. Alchemy Lounge in Los Angeles, CA\n\n![Alchemy Lounge cannabis club](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-4d797521-4135-431f-a55e-519b5ce7a429/original.png)\n\nBack in California, you can also find a limited number of lounges in the Los Angeles area. While officials are looking into permitting lounges in L.A. (similar to how they’re allowed in S.F.), the laws don’t currently allow public consumption in cannabis dispensaries. While experts are predicting more lounges to come as legislators begin to explicitly permit them, some innovative entrepreneurs have found a way to start the marijuana lounge scene early. \n\n[Alchemy Lounge](http://www.alchemylounge.net/#services), for example, is a members-only social club. Because it’s a private club and not a public one, members are able to enjoy cannabis just like they could in their own home. \n\nWhile Alchemy doesn’t sell cannabis or allow for selling on their premises, members can bring their own marijuana supply to smoke or vape. \n\nThe lounge features comfortable seating, WiFi, games and TVs. Alchemy also hosts a variety of cannabis-themed events including:\n\n* Cannabis talks\n* Ganja yoga\n* Game nights\n* Cannabis art shows\n* Live music\n\n### 5. Tetra Lounge in Denver, CO\n\n![Tetra Lounge cannabis club](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-8d459578-6b00-414a-ae07-d6ab6c503ef9/original.png)\n\nAnother region with limited cannabis lounges in the U.S. is Denver, Colorado. While Colorado generally doesn’t have laws in place for cannabis lounges, [Denver has given out one marijuana lounge license](https://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2018/03/15/san-francisco-amsterdam-style-marijuana-lounges-nothing-like-this-in-jersey/), and other lounges use the same private club model that we see in L.A. \n\nOne such location is [Tetra Lounge](https://www.tetralounge.com/), a private cannabis social club where guests can preregister online to join. Tetra is a little on the pricey side, but it’s also right in the heart of the fairly central River North Art District (RiNo) of the city, not on the fringes of Denver like many of the alternatives. \n\nTetra is known for having:\n\n* Creative marijuana-themed classes like sushi and joint rolling, and “chronic and canvas” painting classes\n* Live music \n* Special events like strength training and cannabis fitness sessions\n\nThe space includes an indoor area with seating, dab bar and pool tables, and an outdoor patio with large murals and cozy hammocks. \n\nLike most private cannabis clubs, nothing is for sale. So bring your own cannabis, and enjoy the space. \n\nPhoto credits: Canna Obscura/Shutterstock (main image), [La Tertulia](https://www.instagram.com/p/BkGKkfVFvzo/) (La Tertulia image), [whitecoatservices](https://www.instagram.com/p/Biif1zYF-7u/) (Barbary Coast image), [Mon Ami Barcelona](https://www.instagram.com/p/BqCpukPDuw8/) (Mon Ami image), [Alchemy Lounge](https://www.instagram.com/p/BZ_y6RzB2xC/) (Alchemy Lounge image), [Tetra Lounge](https://www.instagram.com/p/BouiM3ShSUy/) (Tetra Lounge image)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. But for those who are spending the holiday with someone they love—or are just getting to know—and don’t want to do the usual Valentine’s Day dinner thing, a movie night in with cannabis could be the perfect plan. \n\nNot only can marijuana make for a killer aphrodisiac, but it can also lighten the mood and ease any stress or anxiety you may experience on the big night. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\n### Getting in the Mood With Cannabis This Valentine’s Day\n\nDid you know that [cannabis has long been used as an aphrodisiac](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5ad6746f049b4f000a64e890/marijuanas-storied-history-from-ancient-times-to-now), especially for women? Maybe you didn’t realize that the stats tell us [cannabis consumers have more sex](https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2017/10/regular-marijuana-use-linked-to-more-sex.html) than non-consumers do. \n\nRELATED: [4 WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR SEX DRIVE](https://hellomd.com/articles/4-ways-to-increase-your-sex-drive/) \n\nWhile there’s no proven causal link between cannabis and sex, there are many ways in which cannabis heightens sexual pleasure. Just like marijuana interacts with receptors in the body to curtail inflammation, increase hunger or decrease anxiety, [marijuana also interacts with our bodies to increase pleasure perception](https://www.jstor.org/stable/3812350?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents). This means cannabis can not only ease a nervous mind before sex, it can also make the sex itself feel better. \n\nSo, if you plan to consume cannabis while cozying up to your valentine at home this year, here are a few rom coms that will have you chuckling and snuggling far into the night. \n\n#### 1. “Crazy Rich Asians”\n\nReleased in 2018 to critical acclaim, this rom com is hot off the press and as of late last year took in more than $235 million across the globe, making it the highest-grossing rom com in 10 years. \n\nThe plot is a classic “meet the parents for the first time” setup, but with a totally fresh take. Every member of the cast pulls their weight, with equal parts laugh-out-loud moments and touching scenes that make your chest swell. \n\nNot to mention the visuals and set design are bright, in your face and breathtakingly beautiful. To complement the gorgeous visual details, pair this flick with [White Widow](https://hellomd.com/strains/white-widow/). This cannabis strain is known for imparting powerful visual effects, but with calm, uplifting properties, too. \n\n#### 2. “La La Land” \n\nThis musical romantic comedy winds through Los Angeles, casting a romantic and rosy-colored hue on a town that’s so often known for crushing dreams. \n\nA jazz musician, played by Ryan Gosling, and an aspiring actress, played by Emma Stone, dance and sing their way through scenes of bliss, hilarity, heartbreak and closure. It’s a well-done encapsulation of what it’s like to fight for your dreams while also fighting for love. \n\nAnd the music is top-notch, winning statues at the 2016 Oscars for best original score and best original song, “City of Stars.”\n\n#### 3. “Hitch”\n\nThis one isn’t exactly a new release, but it deserves its space in the romantic comedy hall of fame. Will Smith takes the lead as a callus dating coach, whose suave approach to life is outmatched by Eva Mendes’ illustrious character. \n\nThis movie is pure fun, with an ending that leaves you satisfied and even a bit joyful. Pair it with an uplifting cannabis strain like [Blue Dream](https://hellomd.com/strains/blue-dream/). This sativa-dominant hybrid is well balanced, with both new and experienced consumers reporting that it imparts calm euphoria with a nice body high. \n\nRELATED: [TOP 5 CANNABIS STRAINS TO INCREASE YOUR SEX DRIVE](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-5-cannabis-strains-to-increase-your-sex-drive/)\n\n#### 4. “Pretty Woman”\n\nIt would be a disservice to American film if a list of romantic comedies didn’t include Julia Roberts. Chances are you’ve seen this movie since it came out in the ’80s and became an instant classic, but it’s always worth re-watching. \n\nThis is an unlikely duo beating the odds, providing endless comedic moments when their completely different lives converge on one another. It’s a film with great hair, even better ’80s fashion and two of America’s most iconic movie stars—what could be better?\n\n#### 5. “The Big Sick”\n\nThis 2017 movie was a blockbuster hit and provides a completely new take on the romantic comedy storylines we’re used to watching. What other romantic comedy do you know of where the love interest is in a coma? (No spoilers here, you learn this tidbit at the beginning of the movie.) \n\n“The Big Sick” offers a unique perspective on modern love, the meshing of different cultures, grief and family. While that temptation is understandable, you may want to reconsider. There’s actually a whole lot to like about winter, including some amazing outdoor activities like skiing, ice skating and sledding.\n\nAnd you may not realize it, but you can also take cannabidiol (CBD) to increase your enjoyment of these winter activities. Hemp-derived CBD won’t make you feel high like cannabis with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can. But what it can do is help relieve inflammation and pain, and this can make your winter activities a lot more fun.\n\nHere’s a quick rundown of four great outdoor winter activities and how you can use CBD to make them even better.\n\n### 1. Hitting the Slopes This Winter? Use CBD to Ease Your Sore Muscles Afterwards\n\nSnowboarding and skiing are among the most popular winter sports and for good reason. Whether you’re just starting out on the bunny slopes or you’re zooming down a black diamond run, skiing and snowboarding are absolutely thrilling.\n\nBut all of those thrills can be a bit daunting for novices, and they can leave your muscles feeling incredibly sore. Fortunately, CBD’s here to help.\n\nYou can use a [hemp-derived CBD vape pen](https://ondello.myshopify.com/blogs/articles/hellomd-staff-picks-our-favorite-cannabis-vape-products/), for example, to help keep you calm and focused as you prepare to tackle the slopes. \n\nAt the end of the day, when every muscle in your body is aching, use a [CBD topical cream, salve or spray](https://hellomd.com/articles/4-top-cbd-topicals-for-summer-skin-care/). Apply it to your sore muscles, and you’ll get fast-acting, targeted, anti-inflammatory pain relief.\n\n### 2. Cross-Country Skiing Is a Leisurely Winter Activity Made Better With CBD\n\nIf you prefer your skiing to be more steady state than adrenaline rush, then cross-country skiing is a great choice. You’ll get to appreciate the beauty of the outdoors while cruising along on your skis. \n\nPlus, a great advantage of cross-country skiing is that you don’t need a mountain or hill to do it. So long as you live in a state with snow on the ground, then you can find a cross-country skiing trail.\n\nBut make no mistake, cross-country skiing is hard work, and your entire body will be sore when you’re done. Luckily, CBD provides pain relief in many different forms. You can try a [fast-acting vaporizer with highly concentrated CBD oil](https://hellomd.com/tag/vaporizer/), which will help tackle aches and pains along with inflammation both during and after your workout.\n\nAnother option is a [hemp CBD-rich topical patch](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b579d8002f1740001522f06/cbd-topical-hemp-patch). Just stick the patch wherever you know you’re going to be sore, and you can wear it under your clothes while you ski for long-lasting pain relief. \n\nRELATED: [4 HEMP DERIVED CBD PRODUCTS TO EASE PAIN](https://hellomd.com/articles/4-hemp-derived-cbd-products-to-ease-pain/)\n\n### 3. Ice Skating Is a Great Winter Activity, But Your Poor Legs Will Appreciate Some CBD Care\n\nIce skating is one of the most accessible of winter sports. Regardless of whether you’re using the skating rink in your backyard or you’re heading to Rockefeller Plaza, you can usually find somewhere nearby to strap on a pair of skates and start gliding along like you’re the next Michelle Kwan.\n\nOne thing that’s certain about ice skating, however, is that while it’s definitely fun when you’re doing it, it’ll leave you feeling very sore later on (especially if your skating skills leave you spending more time on your backside than on your blades). \n\nBefore you lace up your skates, opt for [CBD sublingual drops](https://www.hellolift.com/products?category=Tinctures) you can place directly under your tongue or add to your beverage before you hit the ice. Taking CBD before you go ice skating can be a good proactive way to help your body deal with inflammation that can develop after ice skating. \n\nThen after your skate, rub some [relieving CBD gel](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57a61802f1740001522f6e/relieve-gel) onto any spot that feels extra sore. And, because it comes in a squeeze or pump bottle, you can easily take it with you to the rink in a bag or purse.\n\n### 4. Pair CBD Products With Sledding for Wintertime Fun That Anyone Can Enjoy\n\nSledding is fun no matter how old you, are and it’s a great way to spend time with friends and family. Plus, unlike most outdoor winter activities, riding a sled down a hill doesn’t require a whole lot of skill or experience. \n\nBeing out in the cold all day is hard on your lips, so use a [hemp-infused lip balm](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57ad2d02f1740001522ff3/cbd-lip-balm) to protect them. \n\nOnce you get home, a great idea is to cap a fun but tiring day of sledding by luxuriating in a bath with [hemp CBD-infused soaking salts](https://www.hellolift.com/products/5b57bb3202f17400015230c3/elevate-luxe-soak), which will help your muscles relax. \n\nRELATED: [DIY RECIPE: MOISTURIZING CBD LIP BALM](https://hellomd.com/articles/diy-recipe-moisturizing-cbd-lip-balm/)\n\nPhoto credit: [Robson Hatsukami Morgan](https://unsplash.com/@robsonhmorgan)\n\nWant to try CBD, but don’t know where to start? Though we all know that many more resolutions are broken than kept, using cannabis to augment your goal-setting may help strengthen motivation when you feel your resolve weakening.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nHere are a few common New Year’s resolutions, with some tips on how cannabis may help you keep them. We'll also suggest which types of marijuana can help you keep and maintain your personal goals. \n\n### Cannabis Can Help You Lose Weight\n\nWhether you need to shed a few extra holiday pounds or begin addressing more serious weight loss goals, several studies are showing that [cannabis consumers are generally slimmer than their non-smoking counterparts](https://www.menshealth.com/weight-loss/a19538689/marijuana-for-weight-loss-does-it-actually-work/), have a lower BMI and generally have lower cholesterol. \n\nTo help with your weight loss progress, consider consuming cannabis strains that contain the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), like [Durban Poison](https://hellomd.com/strains/durban-poison/). THCV has been shown to suppress appetite. And consumers report that Durban Poison imparts a clear-headed, focused and energizing high.\n\nRELATED: [CAN CANNABIS HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT?](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-help-you-lose-weight/)\n\n### Marijuana Can Provide the Motivation to Hit the Gym \n\nGetting healthy is one of the most important resolutions people make. But maintaining those gym workouts can be a challenge, despite the many obvious benefits that come with regular exercise. \n\nIt may surprise you to learn that [athletes are using cannabis to help move through pain and maintain focus](https://www.menshealth.com/health/a19871657/effects-of-marijuana-before-workout/). The plant can also help you get motivated if moving more is one of your goals for 2019.\n\nTry taking the marijuana strain [Green Crack](https://hellomd.com/strains/green-crack/) prior to a workout to promote energy, focus and inspiration. Post-workout, use a CBD-based topical cream or spray to help soothe those aching muscles. \n\n### Cannabis Can Help Address Issues With Alcohol\n\nMany people who’ve struggled with alcohol dependency have discovered that [cannabis provides a solution as an alcohol replacement substance](https://www.salon.com/2017/07/09/the-key-to-treating-alcoholism-with-medical-marijuana-the-key-to-treating-alcoholism-with-medical-marijuana_partner/). Science confirms that moderate use of cannabis is far less harmful than habitual drinking. \n\nSome people wishing to reduce their alcohol intake are using cannabis every time they feel the urge to drink. Because of the sedative effects of alcohol, suggested strains might include the high-THC cannabis strain Kryptonite or the CBD-dominant marijuana strain [Harlequin](https://hellomd.com/strains/harlequin/), which is also effective for depression.\n\n### Enlist Marijuana to Help You Kick the Habit \n\nBecause of its anti-anxiety properties, [CBD is an excellent addition to the toolkit for anyone wishing to quit smoking cigarettes](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cbd-help-you-quit-smoking/). \n\nTo help reduce nicotine cravings, try sucking on CBD-infused candies, or use a [CBD vape pen](https://hellomd.com/tag/vaporizer/) as a substitute for your smokes or your nicotine delivery system. \n\n### Turn to Cannabis if Your Resolution is to Learn a New Language or Skill\n\nMost people who take cannabis therapeutically know that the stoner image is just that—a cartoon-like version of marijuana consumers that has little relationship to reality. In fact, a Harvard study has shown that [cannabis can actually improve executive function](https://www.inc.com/cynthia-than/the-surprising-way-to-be-better-at-brain-teasers-a.html). It’s worth considering adding cannabis to your daily routine if you’ve resolved to learn a new language or some other skill in 2019. \n\n[Cinex](https://hellomd.com/strains/cinex/) is a cannabis strain rich in THC that can help enhance your attention and focus. If you prefer a CBD-dominant marijuana strain, try the minimally psychoactive [Harle-Tsu](https://hellomd.com/strains/harle-tsu/).\n\n### If 2019 Is Your Year to Get Organized, Let Cannabis Help\n\nCannabis consumers know that [with the right marijuana strain, it’s possible to maintain and improve focus](https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/marijuana-users-creative-cannabis-study-weed-study-a8057956.html). \n\nCan’t decide whether to keep those old roller skates or those elementary school drawings? Try some [Sour Diesel](https://hellomd.com/strains/sour-diesel/) to help you clean out the cobwebs in your home and your head. \n\nSour Diesel boasts a high THC content, so cannabis newbies should proceed with caution. But in the right amounts, this marijuana strain is great for focus and the motivation for accomplishing tasks that you’re not exactly looking forward to. \n\n### Let Marijuana Relax You Into the New Year\n\nThe jury is still out on exactly how cannabis helps people sleep. But one thing we know: THC puts some people to bed, but for others, its use can fuel a night of anxious tossing and turning. Obviously, being set during the holidays—or at least making reference to them—is one important ingredient. Plus, there’s usually, but not always, a final scene where the main character learns the true meaning of the season. \n\nThat final uplifting message, in particular, is always nice to hear while consuming cannabis. And a little marijuana can not only help you relax to better enjoy the movie, but it can also help you focus and pay attention. You may notice new and clever details you’d never seen before, even in that one holiday film you watch year after year. \n\nThere’s a lot of room for cinematic interpretation and creativity when it comes to holiday movies. This is probably why there are so many, and trying to narrow down this beloved genre to a handful of flicks is seriously challenging.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nOf course, any list of best holiday movies will inevitably be controversial—and I can already hear my inbox filling up with angry Will Ferrell fans asking what I have against “Elf.” Nonetheless, if you plan on pairing cannabis with some classic holiday films, at least a few of these recommendations ought to do the trick.\n\nRELATED: [DIY RECIPE: CANNABIS-INFUSED POTATO LATKES FOR HANUKKAH](https://hellomd.com/articles/diy-recipe-cannabis-infused-potato-latkes-for-hanukkah/)\n\n### 1. For a Movie That’s as Classic as It Gets: “It’s a Wonderful Life”\n\nGeorge Bailey (James Stewart) is a good guy who’s down on his luck. And when he contemplates suicide, his guardian angel Clarence Odbody (Henry Travers) intervenes. Clarence shows George why the world would have been worse off without him and gets him to change his mind and embrace life after all. \n\nIt’s hard to believe that “It’s a Wonderful Life” was considered something of a financial and critical disappointment when it first premiered. Today, it feels very much the standard by which all other Christmas movies are measured.\n\n### 2. “The Nightmare Before Christmas”: Stop-Motion & Cannabis Are Made for Each Other\n\nLeave it to Tim Burton to create a Christmas movie that also doubles as a Halloween movie. King of Halloween Town, Jack Skellington, finds a portal to Christmas Town. Once there, he’s so enchanted by the Christmas festivities that he decides the ghouls and monsters of Halloween Town should take them over. \n\nThings go predictably wrong, but in the end we re-experience the magic of Christmas—and of Halloween. Plus, when you’re relaxing with some cannabis, the gorgeous stop-motion animation is especially entrancing to watch.\n\nRELATED: [6 HALLOWEEN MOVIES THAT PAIR WELL WITH CANNABIS](https://hellomd.com/articles/6-halloween-movies-that-pair-well-with-cannabis/)\n\n### 3. “Die Hard”: Who Needs Santa When You’ve Got Explosions, Cannabis & Alan Rickman?\n\n“Die Hard” is a Christmas classic precisely because it doesn’t bother with the usual trappings of holiday movies. There are no gingerbread houses or Santa Clauses or even any lessons about “the true meaning of Christmas.” Heck, just to rub in how un-Christmas it is, it’s set in sunny Southern California. \n\nWhat we do have is Bruce Willis fending off evil German terrorists during a glitzy office Christmas party. There are explosions, machine guns and Alan Rickman acting his dastardly best—all of which are particularly fun to watch when you pair this classic with marijuana.\n\n### 4. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”: Seriously, That Abominable Snowman Is a Bit Trippy\n\nIf you’ve ever been a child in North America from the year 1964 onwards, then endless reruns of the stop-motion classic “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” during December likely loom large in your memories. \n\nWhile the movie strays considerably from the narrative of the classic Christmas carol—one of the main characters is an elf who wants to be a dentist, and I’m not quite sure why a movie about Rudolph includes the Abominable Snowman—the song’s heartfelt message of accepting people for their differences remains the same.\n\nRELATED: [4 CANNABIS MICRODOSES TO ENHANCE YOUR HOLIDAY PARTY](https://hellomd.com/articles/4-cannabis-microdoses-to-enhance-your-holiday-party/)\n\n### 5. “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”: Funny on Its Own, Hilarious With Cannabis\n\nPoor Clark Griswold. He’s just a normal guy trying to give his family the best Christmas ever, and yet everything seems to go against him. His 25,000 Christmas lights cause a citywide power outage, his yearly Christmas bonus fails to materialize, and I’ll leave it to your imagination what happens when the pet cat chews on the Christmas tree lights. \n\nBut like all great holiday movies, everything ultimately works out. And Clark realizes that the true meaning of the season isn’t actually about having the biggest Christmas tree or the most extravagant decorations. This is definitely the funniest movie on this list. And when you’ve got some cannabis on hand to go along with it, then rest assured, you’re going to laugh yourself silly.\n\n### 6. “Home Alone”: Just Have Some Cannabis & Try not to Question the Problematic Parts\n\nA movie about accidental child abandonment, a neighbor who may be a serial killer, and fending off a home invasion doesn’t exactly scream lighthearted holiday entertainment. But somehow, “Home Alone” manages to make its fraught plotline seem like good family-friendly fun. \n\nThroughout this action-packed Christmas film, Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) fends off “The Wet Bandits” (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) through his use of ingenious booby traps. I won’t spoil the ending, but since “Home Alone” is a holiday flick, you’re pretty much guaranteed it’s a happy one.\n\n### 7. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” (Yes, Both Versions Because Both Go Well With Marijuana)\n\nI’ll avoid wading into the debate over which version of Dr. Seuss’ “The Grinch” is better (even though it’s obviously the original 1966 one) and just let you choose for yourself by tuning into both. \n\nThe animated and live-action movies tell essentially the same story, which revolves around how the Grinch attempts to steal Christmas from the folks of Whoville. But his plot is foiled by the mic-drop realization that Christmas is about more than gifts and feasting. \n\nWhile the 1966 version is certainly more faithful to the Dr. Seuss book, the 2000 version does have Jim Carrey in a role that’s practically perfect for him. Either way, paired with cannabis, these two movies make for a great way to spend a couple hours around the holidays.\n\nPhoto credit: [Thought Catalog](https://unsplash.com/@thoughtcatalog)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. Whether it’s a fun night out at the bar, a fancy dinner party, a toast to celebrate a momentous occasion or a simple glass of wine with your partner at home, alcoholic drinks play a big role. \n\nAnd it makes sense. Small amounts of alcohol can help ease people into a more relaxed and social mood, which can make things a lot more fun. But as cannabis legalization continues to open up new possibilities for recreational relaxation, a new alternative is entering the scene: alcohol-free, cannabis-infused wine and beer that mimic the flavors of alcohol. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nOptions like [Rebel Coast Wineries’ new cannabis-infused Sauvignon Blanc](https://definitelynotrebelcoastwinery.com/) and [Lagunitas’ Hi-Fi Hops](https://www.sanluisobispo.com/living/food-drink/article213954384.html) are taking the alcohol out of the equation and replacing it with cannabis. Now you don’t have to get drunk to drink with your friends. \n\n### Weed & Wine Culture \n\nThe cannabis wine craze didn’t start with nonalcoholic wines. People have been mixing cannabis with wine containing alcohol for thousands of years. If fact, [the combination was first used as general anesthesia for surgery back in 400 BC](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_general_anesthesia). \n\nBut in recent years, the marijuana and wine movement has been more focused on mixing the two for recreational purposes. What started as just individuals enjoying both cannabis and wine at their parties and gatherings has spawned a high-end culture geared around blending these two recreational substances in sophisticated settings: \n\n* [Cannabis supper clubs where guests are treated to wine and cannabis-infused culinary delights](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b0e3174bf4c4d000a0e73ea/cannabis-supper-clubs-elevated-experiences-by-master-chefs). \n* “Weed and wine” tastings that pair wines with inhaled cannabis flower based on their flavor and aroma. \n* [Marijuana and wine tours](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b08ed7dbf4c4d000a0e73c3/take-a-tour-of-california-wine-and-cannabis-country) that take passengers to visit wineries, vineyards, cannabis dispensaries and marijuana grow sites to show the similarity between the two—and often allow sampling of both products.\n \nRELATED: [ARE MARIJUANA-INFUSED ALCOHOLIC DRINKS A GOOD IDEA?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5ab87d79f24d1300077ccb9d/are-marijuana-infused-alcoholic-drinks-a-good-idea)\n\nIn California, where the climate is well suited to both cannabis and wine, the cannabis and alcohol culture was thriving. Then Prop 64 passed legalizing recreational cannabis, and the legal options for mixing marijuana and wine or beer disappeared. \n\n### No Mixing Allowed—Why Cannabis-Infused Alcohol Is Now Illegal \n\nUnder the new California laws, no one can mix cannabis and alcohol. Not only are alcohol and cannabis not allowed to be sold in the same product (such as cannabis-infused wine), but they’re not even allowed to be sold at the same event.\n\nThose who have licenses to make or sell alcohol could lose them if they’re found to be selling cannabis as well. This has really put a damper on the cannabis-infused alcohol trend and the many events focused on pairing cannabis and wine. \n\nThe reasoning behind the decision has to do with the way [cannabis and alcohol interact](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58e7bbf32fdeaf51a1a08384/mixing-marijuana-and-alcohol). Perhaps we could have guessed from the fact that this potent combination was used for anesthesia that its effects are powerful. Those under the influence of this mix can find it to be sedative, disorienting and numbing. \n\nSome of this is just from the alcohol itself, which comes with its fair share of [dangerous effects](https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/alcohol-health/alcohols-effects-body). Alcohol can make it harder to move with coordination or think clearly, making driving unsafe. And for those who drink too much alcohol, death from accidental overdose is a real possibility. \n\nCannabis, on the other hand, is relatively safe. You can’t overdose from it like you can with alcohol, and it doesn’t impair coordination in the same way. Still, it can be extremely disorienting, especially for new or occasional consumers. \n\nUnfortunately, when you mix cannabis and alcohol, the effects become far more pronounced. The disorientation is magnified, often much more than expected for the amount of cannabis consumed. This can be highly dangerous if people try to drive after taking the combination. One study found that [driving ability was moderately impaired by cannabis but severely impaired by the combination of cannabis and alcohol](http://clinchem.aaccjnls.org/content/early/2015/05/05/clinchem.2015.238287). \n\nWhen [scientists studied this phenomenon](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11543984), they found a surprising result. When subjects drank alcohol and smoked cannabis, the levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) increased compared to when they consumed the same amount of cannabis without any alcohol. This suggests that alcohol actually increases the absorption of THC and adds to its disorienting and euphoric effects.\n\nOf course, this doesn’t mean that the combination can’t be consumed without issue. Many combine alcohol and THC on a regular basis, without any ill effects. But legislators aren’t ready to take on the risk of drivers on the road coming back from marijuana and alcohol events or bars that serve cannabis and alcohol. So this combination is one that happens at private gatherings only. \n\n### The Solution? Alcohol-Free Cannabis Drinks\n\nBut don’t worry. The “weed and wine” culture isn’t gone yet. And while mixing cannabis and alcohol isn’t allowed, the new trend is moving from mixing to mimicking. \n\nTake the new [Sauvignon Blanc from Rebel Coast](https://definitelynotrebelcoastwinery.com/). This nonalcoholic wine swaps out the alcohol for cannabis. With no alcohol, it doesn’t violate any laws, but it still tastes like wine.\n\nAn alcohol-free wine like this would be the perfect substitute at dinners or tastings that focus on cannabis and wine. It opens up a whole world of possibilities for the event sector, because there’s no legal problem with mixing cannabis wine with other forms of cannabis. \n\nAnd even for private events and gatherings, this could be a game changer. For those who simply prefer the effects of cannabis to alcohol, this offers a way to join in the celebratory culture that surrounds drinks without getting drunk or hungover. \n\nWant to go to a party where everyone is drinking, and smoking isn’t allowed? [Bring some cannabis-infused, nonalcoholic wine or beer](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5bdbd36d26ef630008f055a2/how-cannabis-can-replace-your-glass-of-wine). You can raise your glass in a toast, and still get the kind of buzz you prefer. \n\nAnd it’s not just wine. The [Hi-Hops drink from Lagunitas](https://www.sanluisobispo.com/living/food-drink/article213954384.html) takes a similar route. It’s just sparkling water with cannabis and hops flavors, with the cannabis added in after it leaves the brewery. Wine can be good for your health, too, with documented benefits for the heart and the immune system. \n\nBut all too often that glass of vino comes with undesirable side effects and too many calories for comfort. Now, however, today’s array of trendy, easy-to-use [cannabis options can give wine lovers a way to get the relaxing, social effects of wine](https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2018/04/26/trading-wine-weed-legal-marijuana/550949002/) but without the damage wine and other spirits can do.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Is Wine Really Good for You?\n\nYou don’t have to be a wine connoisseur to know that there’s a virtually endless array of wines to choose from for just about any occasion. The relaxation and good feelings that come from having a glass or two of wine aren’t just for social occasions either. A lot of people also drink wine in the evening to wind down, or before bedtime as a sleep aid—even though research suggests that it probably isn’t actually good for healthy sleep.\n\nThe widely touted health benefits of wine are derived mainly from the presence of:\n\n* Ethanol, which blocks nerve pathways in the brain and depresses the central nervous system \n* Phenols, plant chemicals with a range of immune-boosting properties \n\nWine can also dilate and relax the cardiovascular system, which reduces the risk of a stroke or heart attack due to stiffening and narrowing of the body’s blood vessels. \n\nPerhaps for the same reason, wine appears to help prevent the onset of cognitive problems from Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia later in life. Some evidence also suggests that moderately high consumption of wine can also help prevent Type 2 diabetes and ulcers caused by a bacterium called H. pylori. \n\nBut aside from the obvious effects of overindulging, wine may not be as healthy as it’s made out to be. Drinking even in moderation can exacerbate a number of existing health conditions such as:\n\n* Congestive heart failure\n* High blood pressure\n* Neurological problems affecting balance and coordination\n* Pancreatitis\n* Liver disease\n* Asthma attacks \n\nAlthough doctors say moderate drinking, which is defined as a single glass of wine per day for women and two for men, is most likely safe, there’s a risk of addiction in vulnerable people. Plus, alcohol in large quantities can impair the memory, instead of support it.\n\nWine can affect your appearance, too. Like all alcoholic beverages, it’s dehydrating, which can make skin appear thinner and dryer. And because the average glass of wine has around a hundred calories, most of them from fast-burning carbohydrates, it can quickly contribute to unwanted weight gain.\n\n### The Science Behind Cannabis As a Wine Alternative \n\nAs cannabis moves into the mainstream, more and more people are discovering that it can fill just about any of the lifestyle and health niches that wine does. And it does so with fewer risks and side effects—and with more healing benefits, too.\n\nCannabinoid compounds such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), bind to naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors in the human body. Endocannabinoids, produced by the body itself, and cannabinoids from external sources, most notably cannabis, trigger these receptors. \n\nThis means that when someone consumes cannabis, molecules in that cannabis enter the bloodstream and activate those receptors that affect just about every major system in the body. So marijuana’s effects include not just the well-known high, but also a long list of benefits like:\n\n* Pain control\n* Mood regulation\n* Heart health \n* Immune system support\n\nCannabinoids also affect the receptors related to the brain’s pleasure and reward pathways that regulate:\n\n* Relaxation \n* Anxiety \n* Euphoria\n\nAll of these effects are similar to the effects of alcohol. But the body doesn’t have any naturally occurring ethanol receptors. Instead, [alcohol affects the production of two key neurotransmitters](https://www.forbes.com/sites/daviddisalvo/2012/10/16/what-alcohol-really-does-to-your-brain/#11443070664e): \n\n* GABA, a “calming” chemical that lowers energy\n* Glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter that boosts the production of stimulant chemicals like adrenaline \n\nCannabis affects those chemicals, too, but it does so by triggering natural endocannabinoid receptors.\n\nFor all of these reasons, plus the fact that cannabis is minimally addictive, if at all, marijuana doesn’t cause all of the discomforts of a morning-after hangover. \n\n### Making the Switch From Wine to Cannabis\n\nSo, cannabis is quietly replacing wine in the lives of many casual drinkers—and it’s giving rise to its own culture of marijuana products geared towards wine lovers. Folks are even starting to [think about marijuana strains’ tastes and aromas like wine-tasting notes](https://sipnorthwest.com/5-cannabis-strains-shops-for-wine-lovers/). This gives wine lovers a clue as to which cannabis strains they’d prefer, as well as puts cannabis in a framework that wine drinkers are familiar with and can understand. \n\nPeople who have replaced their evening glass of wine with a few puffs from a vape pen or a nibble from a tasty marijuana edible report feeling relaxed and social without the other effects of wine and other spirits. Cannabis can also help with sleep without disrupting natural sleep cycles the way that wine often can. \n\nIf you’d like to try swapping wine for cannabis, here are a few things to keep in mind:\n\nJust as various varieties of wine can have different effects, so can different strains of cannabis and how they’re consumed. For social occasions, try an upbeat sativa or sativa-dominant hybrid strain like:\n\n* Chocolope\n* Pineapple Express\n\nThese two marijuana strains can boost feelings of relaxation and camaraderie while leaving you alert and focused.\n\nBut if you’re drinking a glass of wine or two to wind down and get to sleep, indica strains and products high in CBD can promote the kind of deep relaxation that calms anxiety and helps with sleep. \n\nIf you’re looking to marijuana to help you unwind and sleep, look into heavy indica strains like: \n\n* Grandaddy Purple\n* Berry White\n\nAnd if you don’t want to experience any psychoactive effects, you can opt for a hemp-derived CBD product. Many are formulated to help you relax and sleep, such as:\n\n* Relax Vape Pen by Select\n* Elevate Luxe Soak by Verte Essentials\n\nSmoking or vaping cannabis can produce its effects fairly quickly, and so can tinctures and sublingual tabs or lozenges that deliver cannabinoids into the mucous membranes of the mouth. It can take considerably longer (up to a couple of hours) to feel the effects of edibles, though, and this can be problematic when you’re looking for the equivalent of a few glasses of wine with friends. \n\nIf you choose to go with a cannabis product, read the packaging to see what a dose or portion is. You may want to start with even half of a dose at first to see how it affects you. If you’re consuming cannabis flower, take as little as possible and then wait to see how you feel. You can always take more if you feel you need it, but you can’t take less if you take too much.\n\nBoth wine and cannabis have a long history of helping humans feel better. But today’s cannabis consumers are finding that their favorite products can offer the same effects as a glass of wine, without the calories and other side effects.\n\nPhoto credit: [Burst](https://www.pexels.com/@burst)\n \nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. It may sound crazy to watch a horror movie after consuming marijuana, especially if paranoia is a common side effect for you. But here’s the thing: Not all marijuana is the same and not all Halloween movies have to be scary. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nDepending on the strain, cannabinoid ratio and terpenes, cannabis can impart different effects. While one type of marijuana may make you feel paranoid, another may have you laughing and relaxed, ready to enjoy movie night. \n\n\nSimilarly, some of the very best movies to watch on Halloween aren’t horror movies at all. Here’s a list of the top six movies to watch this Halloween season, in no particular order. It’s complete with options for every horror tolerance level, so there’s something for everyone. \n\nSo, curl up with your favorite cannabis pre-roll, marijuana edible or tincture-infused beverage; pop some popcorn and have the perfect spooky movie marathon. \n\nRELATED: [HOW CBD & THC AFFECT OUR BODIES’ RESPONSE TO FEAR](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5bc90618ee0ba400094ef0a9/how-cbd-and-thc-affect-our-bodies-response-to-fear)\n\n### 1. “Hocus Pocus” Puts the Giggles Into a Spooky Premise\n\nI said this list was in no particular order, but that’s not exactly true. There’s a reason this movie choice is number one, and that’s because it’s the best Halloween movie of all time (in my humble opinion). Sure, it’s a Disney movie from 1993 intended for a young adult audience, but with a leading cast of Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, this is a crowd-pleaser for anyone. \n\nTake it back a couple of decades and watch this all-star cast of resurrected witches wreak hilarious havoc on the small town of Salem. It’s got a perfectly festive set design and costumes that may just inspire you to switch up your own Halloween costume. \n\n### 2. “Beetlejuice” Is an ’80s Classic to Get You Into the Halloween Mood\n\nFrom famed director and creepy creative genius Tim Burton, this 1988 film brings back tons of nostalgia. The plot is pretty straightforward: The ghosts of a young, dead couple turn to a rotting and green-haired demon in the hopes he can scare the new family in their former house enough to get them to move out. \n\nIt’s a perfectly quirky movie, starring Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton that you probably watched back when it came out. Be ready for impressive ’80s fashion and a bizarrely entertaining movie with unforgettable visuals. \n\n### 3. “The Shining” Combines a Terrifying Novel With a Directorial Masterpiece\n\n“The Shining” is as classic as it gets when it comes to American horror movies. This psychological thriller is directed by Stanley Kubrick, based on a novel by Stephen King, and starring Jack Nicholson—a trifecta of talent that culminates in one very scary and memorable film. \n\nFollow along as a mother, father and young son hole up in an isolated and haunted ski lodge that drives Jack Nicholson’s character into a violent psychosis. There’s a pair of creepy twins, a young boy with haunting premonitions and a classic chase scene through a snowy maze. Don’t watch this one alone.\n\n### 4. Watch the Original “Halloween,” the Slasher Film That Started It All\n\nNo Halloween movie list would be complete without this namesake film from 1978. This is one of America’s first “slasher” films, inspiring a whole genre in its wake that’s still going strong today. \n\nIn this movie, a young Jamie Lee Curtis fights for her life after a killer escapes from a mental hospital and comes back to his hometown to finish what he started 15 years before. And if the original sounds too dated for you, check out the updated sequel that’s just arrived in theaters. \n\n### 5. In “American Psycho,” Christian Bale Is at His Creepy Best\n\nIn the same vein as “The Shining,” this psychological thriller starring Christian Bale is so creepy your skin will be crawling for days. “American Psycho” is based on the famous novel by Bret Easton Ellis and features a rich New York City investment-banking executive who hides his psychopathic tendencies and violent ego behind a carefully crafted façade. While the storyline is scary, the acting is what really brings this movie home. \n\nAfter watching this film, you’ll spend a week suspicious of all your coworkers, wondering if any of them has a secret life like Patrick Bateman did. You may even spend a few days questioning your own fascination with outward appearance, ego and the American dream. \n\n### 6. “Get Out” Is a Horror Flick That Makes You Think \n\nThis film took the world by storm in 2017, bringing home tons of awards and record-breaking box office results. The storyline follows a young couple going to stay with the girlfriend’s parents; and it’s the first time the boyfriend is meeting them.\n\nAs soon as they arrive, the boyfriend finds himself at the center of attention he never wanted. This film is still relatively new, so no spoiler alerts here. If you want to know more about “Get Out,” you’ll just have to curl up with some cannabis and check it out for yourself. \n\n“Get Out” brings all sorts of jump-out-of-your-seat moments, paired with social commentary, fantastic acting and even some comedic relief.
