Though we all know that many more resolutions are broken than kept, using cannabis to augment your goal-setting may help strengthen motivation when you feel your resolve weakening.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_us/?utm_medium=copy_link/)\n\nHere are a few common New Year’s resolutions, with some tips on how cannabis may help you keep them. We'll also suggest which types of marijuana can help you keep and maintain your personal goals. \n\n### Cannabis Can Help You Lose Weight\n\nWhether you need to shed a few extra holiday pounds or begin addressing more serious weight loss goals, several studies are showing that [cannabis consumers are generally slimmer than their non-smoking counterparts](https://www.menshealth.com/weight-loss/a19538689/marijuana-for-weight-loss-does-it-actually-work/), have a lower BMI and generally have lower cholesterol. \n\nTo help with your weight loss progress, consider consuming cannabis strains that contain the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV), like [Durban Poison](https://hellomd.com/strains/durban-poison/). THCV has been shown to suppress appetite. And consumers report that Durban Poison imparts a clear-headed, focused and energizing high.\n\nRELATED: [CAN CANNABIS HELP YOU LOSE WEIGHT?](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cannabis-help-you-lose-weight/)\n\n### Marijuana Can Provide the Motivation to Hit the Gym \n\nGetting healthy is one of the most important resolutions people make. But maintaining those gym workouts can be a challenge, despite the many obvious benefits that come with regular exercise. \n\nIt may surprise you to learn that [athletes are using cannabis to help move through pain and maintain focus](https://www.menshealth.com/health/a19871657/effects-of-marijuana-before-workout/). The plant can also help you get motivated if moving more is one of your goals for 2019.\n\nTry taking the marijuana strain [Green Crack](https://hellomd.com/strains/green-crack/) prior to a workout to promote energy, focus and inspiration. Post-workout, use a CBD-based topical cream or spray to help soothe those aching muscles. \n\n### Cannabis Can Help Address Issues With Alcohol\n\nMany people who’ve struggled with alcohol dependency have discovered that [cannabis provides a solution as an alcohol replacement substance](https://www.salon.com/2017/07/09/the-key-to-treating-alcoholism-with-medical-marijuana-the-key-to-treating-alcoholism-with-medical-marijuana_partner/). Science confirms that moderate use of cannabis is far less harmful than habitual drinking. \n\nSome people wishing to reduce their alcohol intake are using cannabis every time they feel the urge to drink. Because of the sedative effects of alcohol, suggested strains might include the high-THC cannabis strain Kryptonite or the CBD-dominant marijuana strain [Harlequin](https://hellomd.com/strains/harlequin/), which is also effective for depression.\n\n### Enlist Marijuana to Help You Kick the Habit \n\nBecause of its anti-anxiety properties, [CBD is an excellent addition to the toolkit for anyone wishing to quit smoking cigarettes](https://hellomd.com/articles/can-cbd-help-you-quit-smoking/). \n\nTo help reduce nicotine cravings, try sucking on CBD-infused candies, or use a [CBD vape pen](https://hellomd.com/tag/vaporizer/) as a substitute for your smokes or your nicotine delivery system. \n\n### Turn to Cannabis if Your Resolution is to Learn a New Language or Skill\n\nMost people who take cannabis therapeutically know that the stoner image is just that—a cartoon-like version of marijuana consumers that has little relationship to reality. In fact, a Harvard study has shown that [cannabis can actually improve executive function](https://www.inc.com/cynthia-than/the-surprising-way-to-be-better-at-brain-teasers-a.html). It’s worth considering adding cannabis to your daily routine if you’ve resolved to learn a new language or some other skill in 2019. \n\n[Cinex](https://hellomd.com/strains/cinex/) is a cannabis strain rich in THC that can help enhance your attention and focus. If you prefer a CBD-dominant marijuana strain, try the minimally psychoactive [Harle-Tsu](https://hellomd.com/strains/harle-tsu/).\n\n### If 2019 Is Your Year to Get Organized, Let Cannabis Help\n\nCannabis consumers know that [with the right marijuana strain, it’s possible to maintain and improve focus](https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/marijuana-users-creative-cannabis-study-weed-study-a8057956.html). \n\nCan’t decide whether to keep those old roller skates or those elementary school drawings? Try some [Sour Diesel](https://hellomd.com/strains/sour-diesel/) to help you clean out the cobwebs in your home and your head. \n\nSour Diesel boasts a high THC content, so cannabis newbies should proceed with caution. But in the right amounts, this marijuana strain is great for focus and the motivation for accomplishing tasks that you’re not exactly looking forward to. \n\n### Let Marijuana Relax You Into the New Year\n\nThe jury is still out on exactly how cannabis helps people sleep. But one thing we know: THC puts some people to bed, but for others, its use can fuel a night of anxious tossing and turning. If you’re a person who’s comfortable taking THC, try [Northern Lights](https://hellomd.com/strains/northern-lights/) or the classic, sedating [Blue Dream](https://hellomd.com/strains/blue-dream/) to help with relaxation. \n\nDifferent cannabis strains affect people in different ways, so it may take some experimenting to find the strain that relaxes and calms you. You may even be able to pinpoint [the marijuana strain or product that helps you de-stress](https://hellomd.com/articles/staff-picks-7-cannabis-products-to-help-you-de-stress/), the cannabis that [helps you sleep](https://hellomd.com/articles/5-sleep-disorders-cannabis-can-help-alleviate/) and the type of cannabis that helps you perform calming exercises like [yoga](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-yoga-and-relaxation-an-interview-with-dee-dussault/) and [meditation](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-5-strains-to-enhance-your-meditation-practice/). \n\nPhoto credit: [Thomas Evans](https://unsplash.com/@grfxman)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. From Blue Dream and Sour Diesel to more obscure strains like Infinite Euphoria, there’s usually something to suit everyone.\n\nBut how did all of these cannabis strains come to be? The answer to that is landrace strains. You may have heard the term “landrace strain” in a story about cannabis genetics or from a breeder you know. If not, we’ll break it down for you here.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nSo, what are these strains? And why are they so highly prized by marijuana breeders and connoisseurs alike?\n\n### The Origins of Marijuana Landrace Strains\n\nTo understand landrace strains, you need to brush up on a little cannabis history. Most scientists agree that cannabis was domesticated in Central Asia around 8,000 BCE. From there, humans brought the plant with them during their migrations across the globe.\n\nIn each area that humans settled, they bred the plant for their specific needs such as for food, fiber and in some cases even psychoactivity. Over thousands of years, humans selectively bred cannabis plants, and each area developed plants that were specifically adapted to life in that region. \n\nToday, when people talk about landrace strains, they’re referring to these indigenous, genetically untouched varieties from various regions of the world. \n\n### Are Landrace Strains Going Through a Resurgence? \n\nIn the 1960s and 1970s, soldiers in the Pacific and travelers on the Hippie Trail—an overland route that began in Europe and wound its way through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India before ending in Nepal—brought cannabis seeds back to the West. \n\nThen, breeders in Europe and the U.S. began crossing these different seeds with each other, creating the parents of today’s modern-day cannabis strains. But in the process of this intermingling, many of the original landrace varieties that may have existed in the 1960s and 1970s were bred out of existence. \n\nThis doesn’t necessarily mean that these genetics are forever lost. There’s been talk of some cannabis breeders making their way back to these regions to seek out more cannabis seeds. \n\nConnoisseurs seek out landrace strains because they’re rare and are said to have unique effects that some modern marijuana strains don’t have. Some also find the high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content of modern strains to be overwhelming.\n\nAdditionally, there tends to be a nostalgia factor for those who consumed these landrace strains back in the 1960s and 1970s. \n\nBreeders are interested in landrace strains because of their genetics. Over the course of millennia, nature has selected the best traits to enable these cannabis strains to survive in their respective climates. Breeders think there’s value in this natural selection that can’t be replicated. They believe there’s no substitute for thousands of years of evolution. \n\nRELATED: [INDICA & SATIVA: DO THESE CANNABIS LABELS MEAN ANYTHING?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5bb542ad28d6e8000971f899/indica-and-sativa-do-these-cannabis-labels-mean-anything)\n\n### A Few Popular Landrace Strains Are Still Around Today \n\nIf you happen to come across these rare landrace strains on dispensary shelves, they’re often referred to by their region of origin, though some do have their own unique strain names. Here are some of the more well-known cannabis landrace strains and their effects: \n\n* **[Afghani](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce5add520d60009f4f4bc/afghani):** Hailing from the Hindu Kush mountain range along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, Afghani is likely one of the oldest marijuana strains in existence. Its flowers are large, dense and covered in trichomes, making it a good candidate for hash production. Consumers looking for a heavy-bodied experience will enjoy this indica, which is parent to many staple strains in the cannabis world, such as Blueberry and Northern Lights. \n\n* **[Thai](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5b3159a89755250007f2afe9/thai):** Sometimes also called Thai Sticks, Thai landrace strains are known for their buzzy, cerebral effects, which are often compared to a cup of coffee. Those who are prone to anxiety when consuming cannabis may want to steer clear of this strain. Conversely, if you relish in strains that set your mind abuzz, give Thai a try—if you can find it.\n\n* **[Durban Poison](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cb16cd520d60009f4f4a3/durban-poison):** Named after the South African port city of Durban, this sativa strain was brought to the States in the 1970s by renowned cannabis breeder Ed Rosenthal. Durban Poison lacks physical effects—this isn’t the strain to take if you want to hang out on the couch or catch up on sleep. Instead, it will focus your thoughts, and is ideal for creative or social endeavors.\n\n* **[Lamb’s Bread](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5b281cb0f5431d0008c41b20/lambs-bread):** Lamb’s Bread, sometimes called Lamb’s Breath, is a landrace sativa from Jamaica that’s been around for decades. Said to have been a favorite of legendary musician Bob Marley, this cannabis strain is known for its clear-headed, uplifting high that’s ideal for daytime activities like exercising and running errands. It also imparts deep mental stimulation that can enhance creativity or help you get over mental barriers.\n\n* **[Acapulco Gold](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cc976d520d60009f4f4a9/acapulco-gold):** This cannabis strain is indigenous to the Acapulco region of Mexico. It had its heyday in the 1960s and became a pop culture icon, appearing in everything from “Saturday Night Live” sketches to Led Zeppelin albums. Acapulco Gold provides a cerebral high and a mellow body buzz that’s pleasant and manageable enough for both daytime and nighttime activities.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles. Between work, family, school and/or daily chores, it can sometimes feel like our to-do list is endless—and this can cause a lot of stress. While people have turned to cannabis to alleviate stress, many folks avoid marijuana for fear of becoming spacey and distracted. \n\nDriven by anti-marijuana propaganda, the stereotype of the lazy stoner is prevalent throughout society. As cannabis use increased during the 1960s in America, some reports suggested that [chronic cannabis consumers may suffer from cannabis amotivational syndrome](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11233295): a condition where consumers lack the ability to concentrate or perform cognitive tasks. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nBut in 1992, pharmacologists concluded that these reports [failed to provide strong evidence that amotivational syndrome is a direct result of marijuana use](https://www.drugscience.org/Petition/C3F.html). Since then, research as it relates to motivation and marijuana use has been limited.\n\nHowever, one recent study suggests that [cannabis consumption may actually improve cognitive function](https://www.mcleanhospital.org/news/mclean-hospital-study-finds-medical-marijuana-use-may-improve-cognitive-performance). We asked HelloMD’s Chief Medical Officer Perry Solomon, M.D., how cannabis may work to stimulate our brains. \n\n“One way to look at it is that cannabis is great for relaxing the body, so if you’re tense, nervous or in an anxious state, being relaxed will help you focus better and concentrate on the task at hand,” he says. “There’s also relief from extraneous distractions, so focus is centralized to specific assignments.” \n\nWhile there’s still more research that needs to be done, this is the first of many studies that will hopefully debunk the lazy stoner image. \n\nTo gain more insight on how cannabis can help us complete our to-do lists, we asked HelloMD staff members what their favorite strains are for productivity. \n\n### 1. Space Queen \n\n![Space Queen cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-e168ea5e-ddc1-4d56-8795-1e548713cdbc/original.png)\n\n**Danielle L., health & wellness writer:** “When it comes to getting things done, my go-to strain is Space Queen. It’s a sativa-dominant hybrid that makes me feel productive without any jitteriness. Space Queen gives me motivation by making everything more interesting; it can make boring or tedious tasks more fun.\n\n\"For the regular cannabis consumer, I’d say Space Queen is as easy as Jack Herer. But if you’re someone who’s new to cannabis and struggles with overthinking, Space Queen could get you into a thought-loop, which can make the experience less enjoyable. Overall, Space Queen is a great choice for mundane tasks like cleaning the house.” \n\n### 2. Sour Diesel \n\n![Sour Diesel cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-efd7c3ec-8956-4b12-b699-50c328ca0688/original.png)\n\n**Melissa N., office manager:** “I like Sour Diesel because it's really energizing and uplifting. When I'm not in the mood to do anything or if I'm feeling super lazy, Sour Diesel gets me in the mood to do anything—even clean, and that’s a big one because sometimes I hate to clean. \n\n“When I was in school, I could do homework for hours, just because it gave me this buzz of energy. Anything and everything I'm not in the mood to do, Sour Diesel will really get me in the mood. It's very, very motivating and energizing. \n\n“Sometimes when I'm really tired in the morning, I’ll smoke some Sour Diesel and drink some coffee. Sour Diesel helps make wake me up—sometimes more than the caffeine will.\n\n“I’d recommend Sour Diesel to new patients, but I would tell them to take it slow, because it's a very cerebral high. Sour Diesel is my favorite; I think it’s one of the first marijuana strains that I ever tried, but just be careful with it.” \n\n### 3. GSC (formerly known as Girl Scout Cookies)\n\n![GSC cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-7662990d-ebab-477e-98d5-dc3c8a711668/original.png)\n\n**Ryan G., customer service lead:** “I really like Girl Scout Cookies, or GSC. Even though it’s an indica-dominant hybrid strain, it makes my body feel really relaxed while my mind is very stimulated, so I’m still able to focus. If I'm at home and I need to do something on the computer, or if I'm just cleaning around the house, it provides one of those experiences where I'm not stressed doing it.\n\n“I really hate having to clean and do household chores—that's probably one of the tasks I like to procrastinate on the most. With GSC, I don’t feel stressed or rushed, so I can focus and take care of one thing at a time, instead of running around the house and trying to do multiple things at once. \n\n“After I'm done with chores, there isn't a crash. For me at least, I rarely feel burned out. I don’t feel couch-locked, and I still feel like I could go about my day and do other things I need to do. I typically have more GSC and keep it going.\n\n“I would recommend GSC, but it’s a high-THC strain and is known to be really strong and highly psychoactive. If you’re new to cannabis, be mindful of how much you’re ingesting—go low and slow.”\n\n### 4. Durban Poison \n\n![Durban Poison cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-64b6cdcf-7cae-4471-bdff-e6d553d37bc4/original.png)\n\n**Bart S., customer service specialist:** “What I like about Durban Poison is the sweet flavors, but what I really like is what it doesn’t do to me: I don't get the couch-lock feeling. It allows me to be productive while boosting my creativity, which makes being productive more fun.\n\n“Because it helps me be more creative, I find that Durban Poison is especially helpful with my work or writing. With writing, it helps me flow freely, and I'm not paranoid about whether my ideas are good or bad. It feels like good ideas keep coming to me, and it makes being productive more fun and just more enjoyable.\n\n“Durban Poison, for me, takes away anxiety as opposed to indicas, which get me stuck in my head with my thoughts, where I can't even express what I'm thinking. With this sativa, there’s no paranoia; it's very relaxing. I can express myself clearly. It makes me feel like what I’m producing is better, in my opinion.\n\n“I’d recommend Durban Poison for artists or someone who needs help writing a poem, a letter or an essay. I think this cannabis strain helps, because it gives you the energy to do the work, and it gives you ideas so you enjoy doing the work.”\n\n### 5. Tangie \n\n**Nik S., customer service specialist:** “The first thing that stands out about Tangie is definitely the taste. Immediately [upon consumption], you’ll notice this citrusy zest, a really sweet taste that you get from oranges or tangerines. I personally enjoy those types of citrus strains or any cross with those terpenes in it.\n\n“I think the effect Tangie provides is really nice, because it’s more of a sativa-dominant strain. So it’s going to have more of a cerebral high, but I feel a nice relaxing effect from it, too. Certain sativas can be overwhelming and give you a little anxiety, but Tangie isn’t overwhelming at all; it’s a really relaxing, really stimulating strain.\n\n“Tangie is great for any activities that require you to be more active. Whether it's housework, actual work, or maybe you're going out on the town and you don't want to be too high. It’s good for being productive, yet a great social strain. Tangie is definitely a favorite if you're looking for uplifting and stimulating effects, but also looking for a nice way to relax while getting things done.”\n\n### 6. Green Candy Jack \n\n**Kevin P., customer service specialist:** “My favorite strain for getting things done is Green Candy Jack, a hybrid blend of Green Crack and Candy Jack. These strains taste great and have energizing effects on their own. But this is one of those small batch strains that just makes everything more interesting, so it’s great for getting things done.\n\n“I tried it for the very first time with my girlfriend when we had a whole day of chores ahead of us. So we just smoked one big bowl and got everything done, like it was nothing. And we still had energy to make dinner, and even go out and have fun afterwards.\n\n“Green Candy Jack tastes and smells like fruity bubblegum. It strikes me as one of those rare strains that really gives you that uplifting jolt that caffeine does, without getting too hazy. It's energizing in a different way, and you don't need a lot of it to help you finish whatever you have set out to do. I’d definitely recommend this strain to anyone who can find it.” \n\n### 7. Green Crack \n\n![Green Crack cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-e54f9899-6e11-49fe-8a23-6d6f5b76a51e/original.png)\n\n**Dmitry B., marketing videographer/editor:** “I enjoy Green Crack because it's a mildly psychoactive sativa, not like one of those knock-you-out strains. I love that it’s widely available—you can find it in many dispensaries. It has a very fresh taste, great flavor, and I love it for its appearance. It's a great strain to get stuff done, especially cleaning.\n\n“Green Crack is great for creativity and definitely great for any kind of physical activity: exercise, walking the dog, washing the dishes—anything like that. The effects are cerebral but motivating. It’s mild; that’s why it’s nice.” \n\nPhoto credit: [Elijah Hail](https://unsplash.com/@elijahhail) (main image); [Dank Depot](https://www.flickr.com/photos/dankdepot/) (Green Crack image)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) index of articles. Post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a [psychiatric ailment that affects nearly 8% of Americans](http://www.ptsd.ne.gov/what-is-ptsd.html). People from all walks of life can experience PTSD, as evidenced by the more than five million Americans between the ages of 18–54 suffering from the disorder today. Traumatic events such as car accidents, violent assaults, war, natural disasters and more can all cause PTSD. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Symptoms of PTSD\n\nPTSD is characterized by stress reactions that follow a traumatic event and persist longer than three months. These stress reactions can cause great agony and disrupt a person’s entire way of life if gone untreated. According to the [National Center for PTSD](https://www.ptsd.va.gov/), these reactions typically manifest as three types of symptoms: \n\n* **Reliving the event:** Recollecting the event includes nightmares and/or abrupt flashbacks to memories of the event. Flashbacks are almost always spurred by a trigger—something heard, smelled or seen that reminds a PTSD sufferer of the trauma they experienced. \n\n* **Avoiding situations reminiscent of the event:** People suffering from PTSD often go to extreme lengths to avoid stress reactions, including rearranging their entire life to avoid circumstances reminiscent of the traumatic event. If the event happened in their home, they might move. If it happened in a car, they may stop driving. If it happened while walking on the street, they might not leave their home altogether. People suffering from PTSD also often steer clear of loud noises, crowded places and sleep to avoid nightmares. \n\n* **Negative changes in beliefs and feelings:** PTSD can go so far as to make a person alter their beliefs and feelings. People who were once socially active may begin to isolate themselves from friends and family. In some of the most extreme cases, PTSD patients can become paranoid and distrustful of the world at large and all of the people in it. \n\nRELATED: [TOP 5 LIFESTYLE CHANGES TO HELP COMBAT PTSD](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-5-lifestyle-changes-to-help-combat-ptsd) \n\n### Top 5 Cannabis Strains for Treating Symptoms of PTSD\n\nBecause PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that involves many of the symptoms that cannabis has proven to be effective in managing, medical marijuana’s popularity as a PTSD treatment is on the rise. Although much more research must be done, a handful of strains have been successful in managing anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, nightmares and other debilitating symptoms that come with PTSD. \n\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUJ13-kqsRU`\n\n#### 1. Blue Dream\n\n[Blue Dream](https://hellomd.com/strains/blue-dream) is one of the most popular cannabis strains in legal marijuana states across the country. Luckily, its popularity also makes it one of the most widely available strains out there. It’s a perfectly balanced hybrid strain known for its euphoric and long-lasting high that’s both welcoming enough for cannabis newcomers and pleasant enough for even the most experienced consumers. \n\nFor those dealing with PTSD, Blue Dream’s euphoric and mellow high is known for having a positive effect on mood, especially for those with anxiety and depression. Blue Dream is a good marijuana strain to choose for managing symptoms of PTSD during the day. \n\n#### 2. Harlequin\n\n[Harlequin](https://hellomd.com/strains/harlequin) is a specialty cannabis strain bred for its consistently high cannabidiol (CBD) content. Unlike many high-CBD marijuana strains, Harlequin still has a decent amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), with a CBD to THC ratio of 5:2 in almost every Harlequin plant. This ratio is ideal for those living with PTSD because the high CBD content can have mood-stabilizing effects, while the THC can help fend off the nightmares that often terrorize PTSD sufferers. Harlequin is a great strain for medicating during the day or night.\n\n#### 3. Headband\n\n[Headband](https://hellomd.com/strains/headband) is an indica-dominant hybrid rich in THC (around 20%) that manifests in a strong mind and body high. Its potent THC level is good for relaxing the mind and can help those suffering from PTSD to skip [the stage of sleep where most dreams and nightmares occur](https://hellomd.com/articles/does-cannabis-reduce-rem-sleep-and-your-ability-to-dream), and sail into deep sleep instead. \n\nHeadband is probably best used in the late afternoon or before bed. Keep in mind that many say the effects of this strain can take up to 20 minutes to fully appear. \n\n#### 4. Durban Poison\n\n[Durban Poison](https://hellomd.com/strains/durban-poison) is a high-energy cannabis sativa strain known for its clear-headed and productive high. Durban Poison has been reported to help with social anxiety, energizing people who would usually feel burdened by social interactions. Sometimes PTSD can cause people to withdraw from social situations and friendships in general, and Durban Poison could be a natural way of treating that symptom.\n\nWhen consuming Durban Poison, keep it mind that it’s a pure sativa strain. An increased heart rate is likely, which some cannabis consumers may not enjoy. When a high dose is introduced to a cannabis newbie or someone not used to consuming sativa strains, Durban Poison can even cause paranoia. And since paranoia is already something that PTSD patients can suffer from, exacerbating the problem isn’t productive. If you’re going to try this marijuana strain, take it slow at the beginning and work your way up to a higher dose over time. \n\n#### 5. ACDC\n\n[ACDC](https://hellomd.com/strains/acdc) is a high-CBD marijuana strain ideal for use during the day when focus, calm and productivity are needed. Originating from the popular marijuana strain [Cannatonic](https://hellomd.com/strains/cannatonic), ACDC has a 20:1 CBD to THC ratio. This ratio allows the strain to impart increased productivity and relaxation of the mind and body—all without causing the dramatic effects a high-THC cannabis strain might bring on. \n\nACDC is an excellent place to start for those PTSD sufferers who are new to marijuana. And for those who are experienced with cannabis. but may be having trouble staying focused at home, work or school due to a traumatic event, ACDC is an ideal daytime medical marijuana option. \n\nIf you have experience using cannabis to treat PTSD symptoms, we’d love to hear what works for you in the comments below. \n\nPhoto credit: [Ethan Sykes](https://unsplash.com/@e_sykes) \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Sour Tangie \n\nAs refreshing and tasty as a glass of orange juice, Sour Tangie is the perfect way to start a day of spring cleaning. Abundant in citrus terpenes, Sour Tangie offers a clear-headed, calm and uplifting energy, ideal for starting your chores without feeling stressed or overwhelmed by the work that lies ahead. This is always a top-choice sativa for both the flavor and feeling it provides.\n\n### 2. Green Crack\n\nWhen you’re ready to bust out the vacuum cleaner and kick your spring cleaning into high gear, try medicating with Green Crack. The name may be intimidating, but this sativa-dominant hybrid brings a burst of energy and euphoria that’s perfect for getting things done. Often used to treat anxiety and depression, this classic strain is easy to find almost anywhere. And with the energy it gives you, Green Crack will help you get your home sparkling clean.\n\n### 3. Durban Poison\n\nTrying to figure out the best way to re-organize your closet? Try Durban Poison when you need creative inspiration. The effects are described as happy and cerebral, and it’s known to promote focus and productivity. Patients who are new to marijuana should take it slow, as this pure sativa strain contains up to 24% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), making Durban Poison one of the most powerful strains. Dry mouth and paranoia are potential side effects, so remember to drink water and stay hydrated. \n\n### 4. Red Congolese\n\nOne of the most popular strains around, Red Congolese is a pure sativa that brings an increased alertness and ability to focus. The initial rush of energy eases into a feeling of tranquility and awareness that might even inspire you to incorporate some feng shui into your spring cleaning routine. This uplifting strain also creates a mild body high that brings relaxation and euphoria without any feelings of “couch lock.” \n\n### 5. ACDC\n\nSpring cleaning can be a daunting task. If you’re looking for a strain rich in cannabidiol (CBD) to help you through it, ACDC is the strain for you. A sativa with a 20:1 ratio of CBD to THC, ACDC’s effects are happy and calm, bringing an increased focus with little to no psychoactive effects. Since CBD can counteract the effects of THC, ACDC is also a great strain to try if you’re feeling any paranoia from ingesting too much Green Crack or Durban Poison. \n\nWe hope this list of energizing cannabis strains inspires you to try a little marijuana to help you clean, reorganize and declutter this spring. Did you know that May 25 is Tap Dance Day? Or that March 28 is Manatee Appreciation Day? Just a few weeks ago, I learned that March 13 is Open an Umbrella Indoors Day. And today is no different: March 20 is the International Day of Happiness.\r\n\r\nThe United Nations (UN) started the International Day of Happiness in 2013 and chose March 20—the first day of spring for those of us living above the Equator—because of its significance in terms of rebirth and new beginnings. Celebrating happiness may seem vague, but the UN’s annual happiness report ranks countries’ happiness based on life expectancy, social support and gross domestic product. This year, Finland tops the happiness list, while the U.S. fell four places to 18. \r\n\r\nBut how can you celebrate the International Day of Happiness? There are many ways to keep your spirits high, and you can even incorporate cannabis to help bump up your mood. \r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\n### How Marijuana Acts as a Mood Stabilizer\r\n\r\nThe cannabis plant contains compounds called cannabinoids. You’ve probably heard of a few, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Cannabinoids are very similar to compounds we produce naturally, called endocannabinoids. Cannabinoids from the marijuana plant and our own endocannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of cannabinoid receptors found throughout the body. \r\n\r\nAs far as brain chemistry and mood go, it’s thought that endocannabinoids help keep the brain’s chemicals balanced. And because the cannabinoids in marijuana supplement the endocannabinoids in the brain (which are sometimes lacking), patients who suffer from mood conditions such as bipolar disorder report that cannabis helps smooth out their emotional highs and lows, and also acts to improve their overall mood.\r\n\r\nRELATED: [A NATURAL MOOD STABILIZER: MEDICAL MARIJUANA CAN HELP FIGHT BIPOLAR DISORDER](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55c10d093166350006110000/a-natural-mood-stabilizer-medical-marijuana-can-help-fight-bipolar-disorder)\r\n\r\n### 5 Ways to Celebrate the International Day of Happiness With Cannabis\r\n\r\nEven if you don’t have a mood disorder, some kinds of marijuana can be uplifting, relaxing and can increase happiness. Athletes of many sports resort to both legal and illegal means to boost performance and recuperate—sometimes with dire consequences. As the stigma surrounding cannabis slowly dissipates and as knowledge of its benefits continues to spread, it comes as no surprise that athletes are now using marijuana to aid in their training and recovery practices. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### How Do Athletes Enhance Their Performance & Recovery? \n\nEnhancement methods for athletes usually focus on either the physical or mental aspects of performance. Physically, athletes may adopt simple lifestyle changes like eating a high protein diet and supplementing with vitamins—or they may turn to more involved measures like hypoxic training, which makes the cardiovascular system more efficient by forcing the body to work out in low oxygen conditions. \n\nAthletes may also take supplements to improve their mental state and boost focus. Caffeine is a popular, legal and easily accessible way to increase alertness, yet some athletes may turn to amphetamines or other illegally acquired substances, which can have severe side effects like organ failure and nerve damage. \n\nRecovering quickly after intense workouts or after injuries is key for athletes—especially professionals whose livelihoods depend on the performance and the wellness of their bodies. Traditional methods of recovering from minor sports injuries include rest, icing, massage and using compression garments. For professional athletes, methods of recovery can be more extreme. They may undergo surgery to repair torn tissue, and many are prescribed opioids in order to cope with pain. \n\nOpioid misuse in professional sports has gained much attention recently, with former and current NFL players admitting to excessive opioid use. A [2011 study surveyed 644 retired NFL players](http://www.drugandalcoholdependence.com/article/S0376-87161100002-0/fulltext)—52% of those interviewed used opioids during their career, with 71% reporting misuse. In addition, 15% of those reporting misuse during their career reported current misuse of opioid pain medications. \n\n### How Can Cannabis Aid Sports Performance & Recovery?\n\nAn increasing number of athletes are using cannabis to enhance their performance due to its ability to:\n\n* enhance focus.\n* reduce anxiety.\n* eliminate feelings of fatigue. \n\nPlenty of anecdotal and preliminary research exists to support using cannabis for these purposes, although studies aren’t specific to sports enhancement. For example, adults with ADHD often medicate with cannabis because it helps them relax and focus—some even prefer it over prescription medications. A study that came out earlier this year found [preliminary evidence supporting cannabis use for ADHD](http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0924977X17302377).\n\nMeanwhile, [CBD has been shown to have anti-anxiety properties](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22729452) by [mediating receptors in the body’s endocannabinoid system](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4604171/). And finally, those with conditions that can lead to fatigue, like depression and stress, often report that using cannabis can energize them and help them function. While not traditionally thought of as an energizing substance, several cannabis strains are known specifically for giving users a boost—among them are Durban Poison, Green Crack and Ghost Train Haze. \n\nRELATED: [THE 420 GAMES CELEBRATES ATHLETES, HEALTHY LIVING & CANNABIS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/567715092829830008000034/the-420-games-celebrates-athletes-healthy-living-and-cannabis)\n\nCannabis’s anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties can help athletes recover from training and injury, and its powerful pain-fighting abilities are already being advocated by those seeking alternatives to opioids. Athletes looking to recuperate after an intense workout tend to use CBD for its anti-inflammatory properties. [CBD plays a part in how our bodies process pain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28826543), and there’s already a large body of preclinical evidence that can vouch for the molecule’s ability to treat different acute, inflammatory and neurological pain. \n\nCannabis can also work in concert with opioids to magnify the pain-relieving properties of these narcotics, leading to overall reduced opioid use. In fact, cannabinoids are so effective in fighting pain that some athletes have turned to cannabis in lieu of opioids—regardless of whether their sport deems its use legal. Many studies, including one HelloMD conducted with UC Berkeley have found that a [high percentage of people regard cannabis as effective or more effective than opioids in pain management](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/595413ae914ae4001b40307a/hellomd-and-uc-berkeley-release-study-on-cannabis-use-as-a-substitute-for-opioid-and-non-opioid-based-pain-medication). Given all of these reports, it comes as no surprise that pro athletes are also using cannabis in this manner. \n\nAnother property of cannabis that makes it especially useful in contact sports is neuroprotection. Both CBD and THC have shown neuroprotective properties in various studies, but the exact mechanism of how these molecules help preserve brain cell function and structure needs to be further studied. Researchers cite the many ways this might occur: from activation of CB1 and CB2 receptors to direct action on nerve cells. A 2017 review article concluded that [phytocannabinoids showed therapeutic promise for traumatic brain injuries](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphar.2017.00069/full), further cementing reasons why this plant is so popular among NFL players—many of whom suffer from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a type of degenerative brain disease that arises from repeated impacts to the head. \n\n### How Can Cannabis Be Integrated Into a Training & Recovery Regimen?\n\nCannabis can complement many traditional and holistic training approaches as well as supplement a recovery regimen. It’s typically easier to use cannabis for recovery than it is for performance. This is because athletes using cannabis as part of a training strategy must consider many different mental and physical factors. \n\nWhen used properly, cannabis can help athletes relax and focus during workouts and competitions. For VapeXhale Founder [Seibo Shen](https://www.hellomd.com/people/569c5569aadede0008000012/seiboshen/questions/following), a jiu-jitsu fighter and strength trainer for combat athletes, cannabis allows his clients to be “supple leopards”—calm, yet also dynamic and ready to spring into action. \n\nSeibo works closely with athletes to fine-tune a regimen that works best for their body. He puts an emphasis on getting his clients to establish athletic goals and then uses cannabis to help them zero in on those goals. “Weed brings you back to a child's mind,” he says. “You see something interesting and your attention focuses on that interesting thing. If we make that thing your competition—that's when we increase performance. And it's not just the weed—it's the full process.”\n\nSeibo has managed to develop a pre-workout routine that addresses a person’s unique biochemistry. Before every session, athletes in Seibo’s gym partake in a five-minute yoga breathing exercise after which the athletes microdose caffeine and consume a landrace sativa strain. The yoga breathing exercise, which is typically “Breath of Fire,” a kundalini breathing technique, brings the whole class into a consistent mindset. “That way when we administer the medicine, people aren’t just super high and caffeinated, while other people are lethargic,” he says. \n\nIntegrating cannabis into a recovery regimen is much simpler: Athletes experiment to figure out how to harness cannabis’s anti-inflammatory and pain-fighting properties to suit their needs. For athletes who are using opioids to cope with pain, cannabis can either supplement opioid use or replace the drugs altogether. Sleep is one of the most important factors in helping the body heal, but it’s often disrupted for those in pain—cannabis, with its analgesic and sleep-inducing qualities, can be especially beneficial for athletes. \n\n\n### Sativas & High CBD Products Tend to Be Athlete Favorites\n\nEvery individual is different, but based on research and anecdotal evidence from athletes who use cannabis in their training regimens, here are some generalizations that can serve as a good jumping-off point for those interested in incorporating cannabis into their fitness routine. \n\nTo encourage focus and energize yourself before a workout, a sativa works best—Seibo uses the landrace sativa Red Congo to help his clients hone their focus. Other sativa strains known for their uplifting effects are [Durban Poison](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cb16cd520d60009f4f4a3), the “espresso of cannabis strains”; [Green Crack](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cc89cd520d60009f4f4a8), whose name speaks for itself; and [Harlequin](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a9d9ad8fdb6dd00088d0cf1), whose high CBD content is a good fit for those who want to avoid THC. \n\nAthletes like to use high CBD products or strains to help them recover after workouts or injuries, while indica-dominant THC edibles can also help athletes sleep, leading to faster recovery times. If you’re feeling a lot of pain and want immediate relief, vaping is the best method of consumption, as most athletes usually avoid smoking due to the irritation it can cause to the throat and lungs. Most of us experience lethargy at one point or another, whether it stems from lack of sleep, illness or depression. That lethargy can make it hard to get out of bed and be productive throughout the day. And it can make it difficult to concentrate or stay awake.\n\nWhile caffeine is probably the most popular stimulant used around the world to combat fatigue, cannabis can be just as—if not more—effective. And it won’t cause the afternoon crash that you may experience after drinking a cup of coffee in the morning. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nWhen ingesting marijuana to fight fatigue, there are a few methods that can be effective.
