The kids are back in school, the days are getting shorter, and—for some of us—there’s a distinct fall chill in the air. But there’s still time to celebrate summer. The last big holiday of the season, Labor Day, is right around the corner, and we hope you’re able to spend it with friends, family and great food.\n\nIf you want to make it an even more memorable holiday, why not infuse some of your side dishes with cannabis? It’ll make for an elevated experience that won’t induce a hangover. And with these recipes, including marijuana in your Labor Day spread has never been easier. \n\nTo infuse these recipes, we’ve added cannabis tinctures, or oils. Are you new to cannabis tinctures? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with this [guide to cannabis tinctures](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/598c7958c760c43045c3375c/cannabis-tinctures-what-they-are-and-why-you-want-them). It will tell you all you need to know about cannabis-infused oils and choosing the right one for you.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nYou could go with a high-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) tincture if you don’t mind a psychoactive experience and are interested in THC’s mood-boosting and pain-melting properties. Or you could choose a hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD) oil that won’t make you feel high and will impart all of CBD’s anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety benefits. \n\nIt’s up to you. Just be sure you label your elevated side dishes, especially if you include a marijuana tincture that has THC. \n\n### Cannabis-Infused Watermelon Feta Salad\n\nYou won’t believe how simple this recipe is. But rest assured, all it takes are two easy steps.\n\n#### Ingredients for Cannabis-Infused Watermelon Feta Salad\n\n* 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil\n* 3 tbsp fresh lemon juice\n* 2 tsp kosher salt\n* 1/2 tsp fresh ground pepper\n* 1 large seedless watermelon, balled or cut into 1 1/2 inch pieces and chilled\n* 1/2 pound crumbled feta cheese\n* 1 cup coarsely chopped mint leaves\n* 15 mL high-CBD cannabis tincture \n\n#### How to Make Cannabis-Infused Watermelon Feta Salad\n\n1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the olive oil, cannabis tincture, lemon juice, kosher salt and pepper; mix thoroughly to make your dressing. \n2. Toss the watermelon, crumbled feta and mint into the dressing mixture. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS INFUSED THIN MINT COOKIES](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b47dbc38904b90007731ae4/diy-recipe-cannabis-infused-thin-mint-cookies) \n\n### Marijuana-Infused Elote (Mexican Street Corn)\n\nIf you’ve never had elote before, you may never go back to plain corn on the cob again. And don’t worry; if you don’t have access to a grill, you can always use a stovetop grill pan or even roast the elote in the oven. And you can opt to boil the corn instead of grilling or roasting, if you prefer. \n\n#### Ingredients for Marijuana-Infused Elote\n\n* 4 corncobs, shucked \n* 1/4 cup mayonnaise\n* 1/4 cup sour cream\n* 1/2 cup crumbled Cotija cheese \n* 1/2 tsp ancho chili powder\n* 1 tsp garlic clove, minced\n* 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped\n* 1 lime, wedged \n* 15 mL hybrid cannabis tincture\n\n#### How to Make Marijuana-Infused Elote \n\n1. Warm a propane grill on high for 5 minutes or heat your charcoal grill and top it with a well-greased grill grate. \n2. While the grill’s heating, use a medium mixing bowl to combine the mayonnaise, sour cream, Cotija cheese, cilantro, garlic and chili powder. \n3. Once the grill is nice and hot, place the shucked corncobs directly onto the grill grate. 4. Turn the corncobs occasionally until they’re cooked through and have blackened grill marks on all sides. \n5. Once the corncobs are cooked, remove them from the heat and place into the mixing bowl. \n6. Spin the corn with one hand and, using a spoon in the other, spoon the mayonnaise mixture over the corn to evenly coat. \n7. Right before serving, top the corncobs with extra Cotija cheese, chili powder and cilantro. \n\n### Southern Cucumber Salad Infused With Cannabis Oil\n\nMuch like the watermelon feta salad, this is an incredibly easy and healthy side dish. If you prefer peeled cucumbers, do that step before slicing.\n\n#### Ingredients for Southern Cucumber Salad Infused With Cannabis Oil\n\n* 4 English cucumbers, sliced\n* 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar\n* 1 tbsp olive oil\n* 2 tsp granulated sugar\n* 1 tsp kosher salt\n* 1 tsp freshly ground pepper\n* 2 tbsp chives, finely chopped\n* 1 tsp red pepper flakes \n* 15 mL cannabis tincture of your choice\n\n#### How to Make Southern Cucumber Salad Infused With Cannabis Oil\n\n1. Once you’ve got your cucumbers sliced how you like them, in a large mixing bowl, combine all other ingredients together. \n2. Toss in the cucumbers and let chill for 20 minutes before serving. \n\nPhoto credit: [Eric Nopanen](https://unsplash.com/@rexcuandot) \n\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. So, what do you do when you want a sweet dessert, but don’t want to melt while you’re making it? \n\nWe’ve got three easy, tasty, healthy marijuana-infused desserts that don’t require an oven. And they all feature bananas. Bananas are a powerhouse ingredient; they’re:\n\n* Full of potassium, which helps maintain low blood pressure, and strengthens bones and muscles \n* High in fiber, which is important for keeping you regular and balancing blood sugar levels \n* A good source of vitamin C, which is integral for a healthy immune system and can fight off free radicals \n\nBesides bananas, we’ve also added cannabis to the mix. We’ve gone for cannabis tinctures in these recipes because they’re easy to add, simple to dose, and work well with the other ingredients. Feel free to use any marijuana tincture you like, whether it be a cannabidiol (CBD) tincture to fight inflammation after a long day, or a high-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) oil to help you fall asleep after dinner.\n\nThe recipes below include a general cannabis dose per person, but feel free to customize the dosage according to your tolerance, desired effects or preferences your guests, if you’ll be serving these desserts to family and friends. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### 1. Cannabis-Infused, Chocolate-Covered Frozen Bananas\n\nSometimes you just want a nice, sweet milk chocolate, and we get that. But if you go for dark chocolate—70% or higher—you’ll get additional health benefits like antioxidants and flavonols that can do everything, from helping your skin glow to lowering your blood pressure. \n\nServes 4\n\n#### Ingredients for Cannabis-Infused, Chocolate-Covered Frozen Bananas\n\n* 4 bananas\n* 6 oz chocolate of your choice\n* 20 mL cannabis tincture\n* Optional toppings (nuts, granola, sprinkles, jam)\n\n#### How to Make Cannabis-Infused, Chocolate-Covered Frozen Bananas\n\n1. Peel bananas and freeze for at least 2 hours.\n2. Melt chocolate in a double broiler or in the microwave, until smooth with no lumps.\n3. Stir cannabis tincture into the melted chocolate.\n4. Dip bananas in chocolate mixture half way and hold over bowl to catch drips.\n5. Sprinkle with toppings, if using.\n6. Place chocolate-covered bananas on a parchment paper lined tray or plate in fridge, until chocolate hardens. These will keep in the freezer for up to 2 weeks.\n\n### 2. Sautéed Bananas With Peanut Butter-Cannabis Drizzle\n\nThis easy recipe requires a little bit of heat, but no oven. By caramelizing the bananas in some coconut oil, the sweetness of the fruit really comes through. \n\nDid you know that the cannabinoids in marijuana are fat soluble? This means you should eat fat along with your marijuana to make cannabinoids better available for your body to use—that’s where the coconut oil and peanut butter come in. \n\nConsider this dessert for your next dinner party. You’ll look like a pro, and your guests will never know just how simple the recipe really is. \n\nRELATED: [WHY YOU NEED TO EAT FAT WITH YOUR CANNABIS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b4fbaf58904b90007731b33/why-you-need-to-eat-fat-with-your-cannabis)\n\nServes 4\n\n#### Ingredients for Sautéed Bananas With Peanut Butter-Cannabis Drizzle\n\n* 4 bananas (you can also use ripe plantains for a twist)\n* 2 tsp coconut oil\n* 8 tbsp peanut butter (or any other kind of nut butter), at room temperature\n* 20 mL cannabis tincture\n* Sea salt and cinnamon to garnish\n\n#### How to Make Sautéed Bananas With Peanut Butter-Cannabis Drizzle\n\n1. Peel bananas and slice in half length-wise.\n2. Heat coconut oil in a pan over medium heat.\n3. Add bananas to the pan, cut-side down. Depending on the size of your pan, you may need to work in batches. \n4. After a few minutes, when the cut side turns golden-brown, flip the bananas to sauté the other side. Add more coconut oil if needed.\n5. While the bananas are cooking, measure out peanut butter into a bowl and add the cannabis tincture; stir until smooth.\n6. When the bananas reach your desired golden color, transfer to a plate and let cool a bit. You don’t want the bananas to cool down completely, but if they’re too hot the peanut butter will slide right off of them.\n7. Use a small spoon or knife to drizzle the peanut butter on top of the sliced bananas. \n8. Garnish with cinnamon and sea salt to your liking. \n\n### 3. Banana Split With Cannabis-Infused Chocolate Avocado Ice Cream \n\nBanana splits are an all-American favorite. Is it those questionable hash brownies passed around the college dorm back in the day? Or a plate of cookies. Chocolates or gummies? \n\nToday, marijuana edibles have grown to include a whole host of healthy choices. Many of the chocolates boast fair trade and organic ingredients. You can find gluten-free and low-sugar baked goods. Some gummies are naturally sweetened with fruit juices. And you’ve even got cannabis-infused savory foods like crackers and jerky to choose from.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nWhy were there so many sweets crowding dispensary shelves in the not-so-distant past?\n\n“When we started in 2009, we were producing more savory products, but unfortunately the dispensaries weren’t into refrigeration, so products were limited to high-sugar content [which tend not to spoil],” recalls Elyse Gordon of Better Baked, LLC. She points out that these days you can find healthier ingredients and cleaner sources of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) extractions for infused products.\n\nElyse says cannabis, in general, has helped her reduce joint inflammation, eased her anxiety and is an effective sleep aid. Although she isn’t a big edibles consumer herself, when she does partake, she likes to make a meal and layer cannabis in with a dressing, sauce or infused bread. \n\nLisa Tollner, co-founder of Sensi Products, maker of Sensi Chew, says that the inspiration for her company related to family members struggling with health issues and chronic pain. \n\n“The more I looked into alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs, the more I noticed cannabis medicine as a new frontier. I saw so many different types of people from many walks of life strolling into dispensaries—from older patients to younger patients—some who looked very visibly sick, and I thought ‘Wow, they're really finding relief here.’ From there, I began experimenting with edibles.”\n\nLisa adds, “We want to develop products that help people live happier, healthier lives, and give consumers an alternative to traditional pharmaceuticals and their sometimes-pesky side effects.”\n\n### Other Ways to Ingest Marijuana \n\nNot all edibles need to be foods infused with THC or CBD. Some alternative forms of edibles—or ingestibles—can be less problematic in terms of irritable or unhealthy ingredients. They can also help deliver a more consistent dose. Depending on where you live, you may want to look into:\n\n* Beverages including tea, coffee, soda, juice and even CBD water\n\n* Capsules/Gel caps\n\n* Tablets or tablinguals\n\n* Water-soluble powders\n\n* Tinctures\n\n* Sublingual sprays\n\nMy own edibles experience started and ended in college with that infamous brownie in the dorm—the kind that led to having way too much of a psychoactive effect. Having revisited cannabis to manage pain and help me sleep through the night, I’m really taken with the wide variety of edible offerings. I’ve found that small, 5 mg mints are a nice, low-dose option as is a low-dose cannabis-infused tea with THC or CBD.\n\n### Sensi Products Offer THC & CBD Soft Gel Caps\n\n“The primary reason for a soft gel cap is its convenience. Pills are easy to travel with, while edibles are sometimes unable to tolerate fluctuations in temperature and condition,” says Lisa. “For those new to cannabis, ingesting capsules provides a familiar experience, which makes it less intimidating.”\n\nLisa explains that both capsules and edibles contain medicine, but the difference is mainly in how it’s processed in the body. \n\n“When you take a soft gel, it’s absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and can take an hour or more to take effect. Depending on the individual and their metabolism, the experience can last from four to eight hours. If a caramel is administered sublingually, it reaches the bloodstream in approximately 20 to 25 minutes.”\n\nSensi Products also offers Sensi Chew chocolates that are a low-calorie, low-sugar treat with CBD. “The soft gels and caramels are very similar in the end result that they provide to the user. They're both anti-inflammatory, assist in the management of pain and anxiety, and are non-psychoactive. It all boils down to preference in consumption method and speed of onset.”\n\nBut not all experts think that the newer ingestible products that isolate THC or CBD are ideal. \n\n“I typically recommend that folks look for whole-plant cannabis products versus cannabinoid isolates, due to the entourage effect of having multiple cannabinoids working together,” explains Janice Newell Bissex, M.S., R.D.N., and owner of Jannabis Wellness, a company that educates about safe cannabis consumption. “However, there are some instances where having a convenient source of THC or CBD might work for some people.”\n\n### Easing into Cannabis Edibles\n\nJanice recommends that people choose edibles that “provide some good nutrition, with a good source of fiber, protein, vitamins and healthy fats.” She has created her own homemade edibles with minimal sugar and ingredients like nuts, nut butters, fruits, vegetables, oats, ground flaxseed and whole grains.\n\n“If someone has an intolerance to certain ingredients, like wheat, caffeine or dairy, it’s important to find an edible that doesn’t contain those ingredients,” she says.\n\nJanice points out that certain terpenes in cannabis may be responsible for some of the medical benefits, so look for the additional ingredients added in the edibles you consume.\n\nPairing cannabis with another source of a medicinal terpene may amplify cannabis’s effect. Lavender contains the terpene linalool that’s also found in cannabis. Linalool is thought to promote relaxation and strengthen the immune system.\n\nIncluding a fat and protein source with an edible can extend the effect, Janice explains. “Even eating a handful of nuts will help to potentially extend the effect of the cannabis or CBD.”\n\n“Remember that edibles affect you by body weight and your own personal endocannabinoid system’s reaction to cannabis,” says Elyse. “Until you’re sure how your body will react, remember: If you don’t know, go slow. You can never take back what you ate, so it’s always wiser to begin small and start to add more after approximately 40 minutes, if you’re not feeling the reaction you want.”\n\nSays Lisa, “Cannabis is not for everyone, but it has continued to show health benefits for a lot of people in a spectrum of health conditions, and we're looking forward to seeing more people find holistic relief.“\n\nPhoto credit: [Brooke Lark](https://unsplash.com/@brookelark)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our Cannabis 101 post. Then you eat some more and still nothing. Now a third edible goes down the hatch, and you wait patiently. All of a sudden, all three edibles hit you at once. You spend a few miserable hours uncomfortably high, just waiting to feel normal again. \n\nCannabis edibles can take an hour or more to deliver their effects. This lag time has trapped many a cannabis newcomer into eating far more than they’d planned when they think the edibles aren’t working. You may know someone—or be someone—who swore off cannabis edibles because of a bad experience like this. \n\nBut now, some cannabis entrepreneurs have harnessed a pharmaceutical process called nanoemulsion. Nanoemulsion can help create cannabis edibles that take effect in as little as 15 to 20 minutes. Discreet and quick acting, these edibles could bring fast relief for a medical condition.\n\nThey also take the delay and guesswork out of how and when marijuana edibles affect the consumer. This could help make cannabis consumption as mainstream as having a few glasses of wine at a party.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### The Problem With Marijuana Edibles: Timing Is Everything\n\nThe cannabis edibles market has come a long way since the early days of homemade brownies infused with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Now, it’s possible to eat your cannabis in foods ranging from trail mix to gourmet chocolates to honey.\n\nCannabis edibles appeal to those who don’t want to smoke or vape cannabis, but still want a potent dose of cannabinoids. Many consumers find that having to commit a lengthy amount of time to a cannabis experience—that can potentially be unpredictable, too—can be inconvenient and frustrating. \n\nWhen you smoke or vape cannabis, cannabinoids enter the bloodstream almost immediately through the capillaries in the lungs. This is why most people are able to feel the plant’s effects within minutes.\n\nBut edibles take a different route to deliver their effect. When you eat a marijuana edible, you consume the cannabinoids along with a number of other ingredients. And they’re all processed together through the stomach and the rest of the digestive system. Consumption of the other ingredients coupled with the digestive process (plus what may already be in your stomach) mean that the cannabinoids’ effects can be unpredictable in timing and strength. \n\nAnother issue with marijuana edibles is that cannabinoids are fat soluble, or lipophilic, which means [they must be dissolved in fats in order to become bioavailable](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5009397/). This is why cannabis cooking typically involves [cannabis-infused butter](https://hellomd.com/articles/diy-recipe-cannabutter-or-cannabis-butter) or other kinds of oils such as coconut or olive. Combining cannabis with fat helps the intestines [transport cannabinoids into the liver and from there to the bloodstream](https://www.projectcbd.org/science/cannabis-pharmacology/cbd-drug-interactions-role-cytochrome-p450).\n\nAll this takes time. But the emerging technology of nanoemulsion creates a dramatic shortcut by taking advantage of cannabis’s affinity for fat.\n\nRELATED: [WHY YOU NEED TO EAT FAT WITH YOUR CANNABIS](https://hellomd.com/articles/why-you-need-to-eat-fat-with-your-cannabis)\n\n### What Is Nanoemulsion?\n\nNanoemulsion takes advantage of [nanotechnology, a branch of technology that conducts operations on the nanoscale](https://www.nano.gov/nanotech-101/what). Or in other words, dimensions measured in nanometers. One nanometer is one billionth of a meter.\n\nAnd if you’re not used to working in the metric system, one inch is 25,400,000 nanometers long. This kind of scale allows nanotechnology specialists to work on the level of atoms and molecules, including the molecules in substances such as prescription drugs and the cannabinoids in cannabis.\n\n[Nanoemulsion delivers a variety of pharmaceuticals](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4362737/), including some cancer medications and vaccines. Nanoemulsions can make medications more bioavailable and reduce the side effects and toxicity that can accompany powerful drugs. Nanoemulsion technology combines:\n\n* Water\n* An oil\n* Some type of surfactant (a compound that lowers surface tension) to stabilize the mixture \n* The desired load of a particular drug or other chemical \n\nBecause of their miniscule size, nanoemulsions can quickly penetrate the skin and other tissues. This causes the medication to be delivered quickly at full strength while bypassing the digestive system and other kinds of processing by the body. \n\n### Nanoemulsions Can Solve the Timing Problem With Edibles\n\nIf nanoemulsion technology can deliver pharmaceuticals safer and more efficiently, can it work for cannabis, too? In 2015, Colorado cannabis entrepreneur Peter Barsoom, founder of the [cannabis edible company 1906](https://www.1906newhighs.com/products/), asked this question. The result is a line of cannabis edibles developed with nanoemulsions of THC and/or cannabidiol (CBD), which promise to deliver its effect in 20 minutes or less. \n\nSince then, a number of other cannabis businesses have begun to explore the potential of nanoemulsions in cannabis products of various kinds. As awareness grows about the benefits of nanoemulsion technology for both medical and recreational cannabis consumers, expect to see more rapid delivery products hitting the market. \n\nThese new products reflect the fact that nanoemulsion technology and cannabis seem made for each other. The oils that are required in a marijuana edible for the cannabinoids to become bioavailable are among those most commonly used to create nanoemulsions. And because nanoemulsions can deliver their full potency so quickly, cannabis experts think rapid delivery edibles could lead to a cultural shift in the way people view—and consume—cannabis.\n\nSmoking and vaping are obvious ways to consume marijuana, but in some social situations neither of these is appropriate or welcome. Conventional edibles are a less obtrusive way to consume cannabis, but it can take far too long to feel their effects.\n\nWith rapid delivery edibles though, the effect is very similar to consuming alcohol, which could make taking these kinds of edibles similar to having a few glasses of wine at dinner. For those who are taking cannabis for medical purposes, rapid delivery edibles can also make it easier to get a standard dose of the right cannabinoid combination and make it easy to microdose for desired effects.\n\n### Rapid Delivery Edibles Tap a Growing Market of Discreet Cannabis Consumers \n\nThe market for cannabis edibles is growing fast, as people search for ways to take cannabis discreetly in social settings and get quick relief from a variety of health conditions. And now, nanoemulsion technology makes it possible to add rapid release cannabinoids to food products of all kinds. This should be welcome news for those who want a pleasant, THC-powered social high as well as for folks who need quick relief with CBD from a medical condition. \n\nThe use of cannabis nanoemulsions goes beyond edibles, too. Because nanoparticles are so small, they can be easily absorbed through the skin. This makes it possible to boost the response time for topical cannabis products such as creams and ointments. \n\nIn all of these situations, nanotechnology plus marijuana’s well-known affinity for fats of all kinds make it possible for tiny particles to pack a big punch—and to deliver cannabinoids for health and wellness in a fraction of the usual time.\n\nPhoto credit: [NordWood Themes]( https://unsplash.com/@nordwood)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. That’s because cannabinoids like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are fat-soluble. This means that you need to eat marijuana edibles with fats to make the cannabinoids available to the body.\n\nBut recent research reveals that the [connection between fats and cannabis](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5009397/) is more complex than that, with important implications for making the most of marijuana’s many medicinal properties.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Cannabis Compounds Are Lipophiles—Why Is This Important? \n\nChemicals that people consume such as vitamins, supplements and medications are either water soluble or fat soluble. This means that they can dissolve and become bioavailable either by water or fat. Water-soluble substances such as vitamin C and B-complex vitamins dissolve easily in water, so that excess amounts of these chemicals are washed out through the kidneys. \n\nBut fat-soluble substances like vitamins A and K are lipophiles, or fat lovers. This means that they depend on fats in order to become available to the body. Instead of being flushed out through the kidneys, these substances accumulate over time in the body’s fatty tissues. This is why it can be easy to reach potentially toxic levels of these kinds of chemicals if a person consumes too much of them.\n\nCannabis researchers have identified more than 60 compounds in the cannabis sativa plant. Most of them appear to be inactive and don’t have a particular effect on humans. But euphoria-inducing THC and immune-boosting, inflammation-fighting CBD top the list of active cannabinoids that mimic the effects of the body’s own endocannabinoid system (ECS). \n\nWhen you smoke or vape cannabis, these cannabinoid molecules can directly enter the capillaries in the lungs and quickly move from there into the bloodstream. Then they circulate to the brain and other parts of the body. But eating cannabis won’t produce the same result. It’s simply broken down by the digestive system and passed on out of the body. \n\nThis is because cannabis compounds are all lipophiles. They need fats to dissolve and become bioavailable. They also accumulate in the body’s own fatty tissues. So, to be most effective, cannabis needs to be accompanied by dietary fats of some kind—and the fattier the better.\n\n### Fats Trigger the Intestinal Lymphatic System\n\nThe lymphatic system is a [widespread network that supports immune functioning](https://www.livescience.com/26983-lymphatic-system.html) and helps the body eliminate toxins and waste. Hundreds of lymph nodes are found throughout the body, and most people are familiar with them as glands in the armpit, groin or neck that swell up in response to an infection.\n\nBut the body also has a lymphatic system in the digestive tract. And recent research has found that this [intestinal lymphatic system plays an important role](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5674070/) in making the compounds in cannabis edibles accessible to the body.\n\nWhen a person eats a cannabis edible that contains a high-fat ingredient or has a relatively high- fat meal along with eating a marijuana edible, these fats appear to stimulate activity in the intestinal lymphatic system. In this way, the compounds that are dissolved in fats are transported into the bloodstream by this secondary lymphatic system and made available to the body.\n\n### Not All Fats Are Equally as Good at Making Marijuana Bioavailable\n\nMany people who make cannabis edibles or extracts at home say that butter is a favorite carrier for delivering the full benefits of THC and/or CBD. This is because butter is a saturated fat. Saturated fats, which are mainly found in animal products, are high in long-chain fatty acids and are the most effective medium for dissolving cannabis compounds.\n\nPlant-based fats—such as olive oil, sesame oil or avocado oil—are unsaturated. Although they can make cannabis compounds bioavailable too, they may not deliver the full effect as efficiently as saturated animal fats do. \n\nRELATED: [COOKING WITH CANNABIS](https://hellomd.com/articles/cooking-with-cannabis)\n\nOne significant exception is coconut oil. In recent years, the coconut has taken the natural health world by storm for its ability to deliver the health benefits of saturated fat without the damaging effects that saturated fats can have on the heart and cardiovascular system. And now, cannabis edible enthusiasts are embracing coconut oil as perhaps the ideal carrier for edible cannabis compounds. \n\nCoconut oil is around 90% saturated fat. But because it’s plant based, that fat derives from medium-chain fatty acids that don’t typically cause the hardening of the arteries and cholesterol clogging action that saturated animal fats can. \n\nYou don’t have to consume a lot of fat in an edible itself to get the benefits of cannabinoids. New studies reveal that eating a high-fat meal along with your cannabis edible can achieve similar results.\n\n### Cannabis Builds Up in Fatty Tissues\n\nCannabis has an affinity for fat in other ways, too. Because excess amounts of fat-soluble chemicals and compounds aren’t flushed from the body the way water soluble ones are, cannabis compounds can be stored in the body’s fat cells for 30 days or more. \n\nOver this period of time, these compounds are gradually released back into the bloodstream and eventually eliminated. But in the meantime, they’re still detectable in the body. This is why it’s possible to test positive for THC well after the last time you consumed it. It’s also why some athletes who work out hard claim to get high from the THC that’s released when they’re burning body fat, well after they actually consumed marijuana.\n\nIt’s true that [THC levels can test higher after a workout](http://healthland.time.com/2013/09/17/one-toke-many-hits-exercise-could-trigger-additional-high-for-marijuana-users/), because of what’s stored in fatty tissue. But is it enough for you to feel high, too? The jury’s still out on that one. \n\nThe complex ways in which cannabis and fat interact can have serious implications for the medical uses of cannabis. If you’re taking your cannabis in edible forms, whether—and how— you consume them with fat has a major impact on whether you’re getting the optimal dose of the cannabis compounds you need.\n\nBut cannabis compounds love fat. And combining them with the right kinds of fat can make the health benefits of cannabis edibles even more potent. \n\nPhoto credit: [Niklas Rhöse]( https://unsplash.com/photos/FlmXvqlD-nI)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana) post. In a large mixing bowl, beat 1/2 cup of softened butter until creamy.\n2. Add 1 cup of sugar. \n3. Continue to beat the butter and sugar mixture until completely combined.\n4. Add the egg and mint extract, and stir until creamed.\n5. Using a sifter, sift the flour, cocoa powder and salt into a separate mixing bowl. \n6. Slowly add the sifted dry goods to the creamed mixture until completely smooth. It may get difficult to beat as you add more flour, but that’s the right consistency for dough. \n7. Divide the dough in half, and on a lightly floured surface, roll each half of the dough into 1 1/2 inch-thick snakes. \n8. Wrap each of these dough snakes in wax paper, let them sit in the fridge for 4 1/2 hours and then finish them off in the freezer for 30 minutes. \n9. When you’re ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and remove the dough from the freezer. \n10. Remove the wax paper and use a very sharp knife to slice the snakes into 1/4-inch pieces. You should be able to slice these without the dough giving in. \n11. Place the pieces about 1 1/2 inches apart on a cookie sheet and bake for 10–12 minutes. Let the cookies cool completely before glazing.\n12. For the medicated chocolate glaze, melt the cannabis-infused chocolate, regular butter and the non-infused semisweet chopped chocolate in a double boiler. \n13. When the chocolate is melted, place a cookie in the center of the bowl and use a spoon to completely cover the cookie with melted chocolate. \n14. Scoop the covered cookie up with a fork and place it on a large sheet of wax paper. Repeat this process for all cookies and then let them harden completely before removing them from the wax paper. \n\nNow you’re ready to enjoy this adult version of a childhood classic.\n\nPhoto credit: [Katie](https://www.flickr.com/people/61192399@N04/)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. And when the weather’s warm, there’s one comfort food on everyone’s mind: ice cream. Many of us have childhood memories of running out to the ice cream truck after hearing its siren song or stopping at the ice cream shop on a hot day. \n\nThis cool, creamy and refreshing treat feels just right on a hot summer’s day—but it isn’t always the healthiest option. The more we learn about healthy eating, the more people are cutting ice cream’s main ingredients—namely dairy and sugar—completely out of their diet. While turning down ice cream will probably improve your health and give you more energy to tackle your summer plans, on the flipside it can also leave a sad void in your summer fun.\n\nIf you’ve cut ice cream out of your diet, don’t worry. We have a dairy alternative: avocados. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Why Do Avocados Make a Good Ice Cream Base? \n\nAvocado ice cream might not sound good at first, but avocados actually make the perfect healthy base for an alternative ice cream. They’re full of healthy fats, which gives them a smooth and creamy texture that’s very similar to ice cream. They also have a mild flavor, which is easy to cover with rich and decadent chocolate. Add some honey, vanilla and salt, and you won’t even remember the avocados. \n\nThis marijuana-infused, avocado-based ice cream is an incredibly rich, creamy and delicious option. It’s also something that can be enjoyed by those on diets that are:\n\n* Gluten free\n* Dairy free\n* Egg free\n* Nut free\n* Paleo friendly\n* Autoimmune safe\n* Vegan (if you swap out the honey for a sweetener of your choice; agave nectar is a good option) \n\nWhile it isn’t traditional ice cream, it sure tastes like it is, making it hard to distinguish from a rich and creamy chocolate ice cream. It just isn’t the same unless you spend the day eating smoky and delicious meats and/or vegetables straight from the grill. So, in honor of America’s birthday, here’s a recipe for cannabis-infused Kansas City-style barbecue sauce that you can use on any type of meat, seafood or veggies. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nIt’s incredibly easy to infuse cannabis into marinades using whatever tincture you prefer at the effective dose for you. We’ll give recommendations on dose and type of tincture in the recipe below, but feel free to change this up to fit your needs and tolerance level. \n\nAnother plus with a marinade is that you can dose some, but not all, of the food—your non-cannabis consuming friends will thank you. To do this, all you have to do is make the marinade and split the batch into two containers; then add the cannabis tincture to one of them. Don’t forget to clearly label that container “infused with cannabis.”\n\nThen, when you’re ready to grill, cook the non-medicated food items first, followed by the medicated goods. Make sure the trays or plates where the food ultimately ends up are clearly labeled as well and that the marijuana-infused foods are out of reach of any children. \n\nRELATED: [DIY RECIPE: CANNABIS-INFUSED WATERMELON, MINT & LIME POPSICLES](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/598ce6b0db921e0510e08ca3/diy-recipe-cannabis-infused-watermelon-mint-and-lime-popsicles) \n\n### Ingredients for Cannabis-Infused Kansas City Barbecue Marinade\n\n* 1 tbsp vegetable oil\n* 15 mL 1:1 THC:CBD cannabis tincture\n* 6 cloves of garlic, peeled and smashed\n* 2 tbsp tomato paste\n* 1 tbsp chili powder\n* 1 tbsp paprika\n* 1 tsp red pepper flakes\n* 1/4 tsp allspice\n* 1/4 tsp ground cloves\n* 2 cups organic ketchup \n* 2 cups water\n* 1/4 cup dark molasses\n* 1/4 cup brown sugar\n* 1 tbsp kosher salt\n* 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce\n* 2 tsp dried mustard\n* 1 tsp ground black pepper \n* 1 bay leaf\n\n### How to Make Cannabis-Infused Kansas City Barbecue Marinade \n\n1. Bring a large saucepan to medium heat. \n2. Toss in the garlic, tomato paste, chili powder, paprika, red pepper, allspice and cloves. \n3. Cook for about 3 minutes until very fragrant and the tomato paste is dark red. \n4. Add the remaining ingredients except the cannabis tincture: ketchup, water, vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, bay leaf, black pepper, mustard, soy sauce, salt and Worcestershire sauce. \n5. Lower the heat to a simmer, and let all of these ingredients come together for 30 minutes. \n6. Remove the saucepan from heat; then remove the bay leaf. \n7. If you’re splitting this batch into two for a non-medicated and medicated version, this is the time to do it. \n8. Add the cannabis tincture, and whisk it in until completely mixed. \n\nPhoto credit: [Stephanie McCabe](https://unsplash.com/@stephaniemccabe) \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. For recreational consumers, this is a hangover-free way to enjoy a tasty beverage. And for medical marijuana patients, it’s a nice method to liven up the way you consume your medicine.\n\nIn our drink recipe, we suggest a cannabis tincture dose and ratio, but you can customize this to your needs, tolerance level and preferences. \n\nRELATED: [DIY RECIPE: QUICK & EASY CANNABIS STRAIN-SPECIFIC TINCTURE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a621ef38425e40008273a30/diy-recipe-quick-and-easy-cannabis-strain-specific-tincture)\n\n### What Is the Summer Solstice?\n\nThe summer solstice is the longest day of the year for anyone living above the equator. As you may remember from your science class in grade school, the earth rotates around the sun with a tilted axis. This tilted rotation puts certain portions of the planet, during certain periods of the year, into more direct sunlight than others. This is the reason we have seasons.\n\nThe summer solstice is when the northern hemisphere gets the maximum of direct sunlight, making it the longest stretch of daylight each year. The further north you go, the more hours of sunlight you’ll experience on this day. So, make the most of the extra hours of sunlight with some of your favorite people and this non-alcoholic, marijuana-infused drink.\n\n### Ingredients for Cannabis-Infused Sangria (Non-Alcoholic): \n\nServes 8 \n\n* 4 cups white grape juice\n* 1 cup orange juice \n* Juice of 1 lime\n* 1 cup blueberries\n* 1 cup strawberries, cut in half\n* 2 oranges, cut into chunks\n* 2 peaches, cored and cut into chunks\n* 16 mL of 1:1 CBD:THC tincture (2 mL per serving)\n\n### How to Make Cannabis-Infused Sangria:\n\n1. Chop the fresh fruit, except the blueberries, into bite-sized chunks, leaving the peel on the oranges and peaches. \n2. In a large pitcher, add the fruit chunks and blueberries. \n3. Pour in the grape juice, orange juice, lime juice and cannabis tincture, and mix thoroughly. \n4. Let the beverage rest in the fridge for at least 2¬–3 hours before serving. \n\nAs always, when serving any marijuana-infused food or beverages, be sure to properly label the pitcher and inform your guests that it contains cannabis. \n\nPhoto credit: [Lawrence Walters](https://unsplash.com/@lawrencewaltersphotos) \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Each recipe is delicious as is, but can be easily customized to fit your own taste and dietary needs. To medicate these homemade cannabis popsicles, go with a marijuana tincture; it’s the easiest way to add cannabis to the mix. While we’ve provided a suggested ratio for each recipe, your preferred cannabis tincture will work, too—whether that’s a cannabidiol (CBD)-only tincture or a high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) one. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS TINCTURES: WHAT THEY ARE AND WHY YOU WANT THEM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/598c7958c760c43045c3375c/cannabis-tinctures-what-they-are-and-why-you-want-them) \n\n### Coconut Berry Cannabis-Infused Popsicles\n\n10 servings\n\n#### Ingredients: \n\n* 3/4 cup strawberry\n* 3/4 cup blueberries (raspberries, blackberries or a blend of berries also work)\n* 1 15-oz can full-fat coconut milk\n* 1 tsp vanilla extract\n* 3 tbsp local honey\n* 15 mL 1:1 CBD:THC cannabis tincture\n\n#### How To: \n\n1. In a food processor or blender, add the coconut milk, vanilla, honey, cannabis tincture, blueberries and strawberries. \n2. Blend until completely smooth, using a silicon spatula to scrape the sides as needed. \n3. Pour the mixture into popsicle molds, leaving about a 1/2 inch of space on top. \n4. Toss in a few full blueberries and/or slices of strawberries for added color and texture. \n5. Place the mold in the freezer for at least 6–8 hours or until completely frozen. \n\n### Cannabis Ginger-Lemonade Popsicles\n\nBy using a high-CBD tincture, you can enjoy this refreshing popsicle any time without getting overly intoxicated by THC. The ginger can also help with nausea and motion sickness. \n\n10 servings\n\n#### Ingredients: \n\n* 2 1/4 cups warm water \n* 2/3 cup local honey\n* 15 mL 20:1 CBD:THC cannabis tincture\n* Juice of 2 1/2 fresh lemons \n* 2-inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled\n* Lemon zest for garnish\n\n#### How To:\n\n1. Start by grating the peeled ginger over a bowl to collect all of the juice. \n2. In a large mixing bowl, add the warm water, honey, ginger and marijuana tincture together and mix until honey is dissolved. \n3. If you prefer your popsicles without the ginger pieces, allow this mixture to rest until cold and then use a fine strainer or cheesecloth to strain the mixture into a large measuring cup or pitcher for easy pouring. \n4. Pour the final mixture into popsicle molds, leaving 1/4 inch of space at the top. \n5. Sprinkle a bit of lemon zest on top for a beautiful addition. \n6. Freeze for 6–8 hours or until completely frozen. \n\n### Green Machine Marijuana Breakfast Popsicles\n\n6 servings\n\n#### Ingredients: \n\n* 2 cups diced fresh pineapple (frozen will work, too)\n* 1 1/2 bananas\n* 1/2 cup spinach\n* 2/3 cup almond, coconut or other preferred nut milk\n* 15 mL of a 2:1 CBD:THC tincture\n\n#### How To: \n\n1. In a blender or food processor, add the pineapple, banana, spinach, nut milk and cannabis tincture. \n2. Blend these ingredients until completely smooth, using a silicon spatula as needed to scrape the sides. \n3. Once fully combined, pour the mixture into popsicle molds leaving about 1/4 inch of space at the top. \n4. Place the molds in the freezer for 6–8 hours and enjoy.\n\nDon’t be afraid to get creative with these recipes and customize them to your liking.
