Cigarettes\n \nMany people are averse to smoking their medical marijuana at all. Joints are sometimes called marijuana cigarettes, but they aren't as harmful to your health as tobacco cigarettes. The *Journal of the American Medical Association* published a [20-year study on cannabis smokers](https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/1104848) that shows smoking cannabis is not as harmful to the lungs as cigarettes and did not lead to lung or colon cancers. [The Harm Reduction Journal](https://harmreductionjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1477-7517-2-21) states that cannabis and tobacco smoke are not equally carcinogenic. \n \nFor the most part, the benefits of inhaling cannabinoids outweigh the adverse effects of the smoke. But smoking can irritate the lungs, induce allergies, or cause coughing and phlegm. If you have sensitive lungs or can't smoke for any reason, then you may want to [try a flower vaporizer instead](https://hellomd.com/articles/beginners-guide-finding-the-right-marijuana-vaporizer). \n\n![How to roll a joint](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_03_11_at_2_40_02_PM_cb2fd6f7e9.png)\n \nBelow we take you through the steps for rolling the perfect joint.\n\n#### Supplies\n \nTo properly roll a joint, there are a few accessories you need to have; most can be bought at the dispensary along with your cannabis. This tutorial uses a roller accessory that basically rolls the joint for you. Here's what you need to roll joints:\n \n- Grinder\n- Rolling Papers\n- Roller\n- Lighter\n- Tip or Filter\n- Cannabis flower of your choice\n\n![how to roll a joint](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_03_11_at_2_35_53_PM_2a28a7098b.png)\n \nGrinders come in many sizes and materials. The ones that work best are metal with a multi-tier design that separates the ground weed out of the grinder teeth. Rolling papers also come in a variety of sizes and materials. Try to use natural, unbleached, and undyed papers when possible. \n\n![Cannabis grinder](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_03_11_at_2_40_57_PM_2712327ea5.png)\n\nWe use a roller in this tutorial because it makes the process easy and inexpensive. More practice and skill are required to roll a tight joint without one. Tips are also optional, but they make joints easier to hold, and they filter any loose grind that pulls through as you inhale. \n \n#### Steps\n \n- 1.) Load the Grinder. Remove the grinder lid and load about 2/3 gram of flower into the grinder. Pull out seeds and stems as you break up the buds between the teeth of the grinder. Replace lid. \n- 2.) Rotate & Grind. Press down on the lid and rotate back and forth. Unscrew the top half of the grinder to reveal your freshly ground flower.\n- 3.) Load Roller. First, place the tip at one end of the roller. Then add your cannabis a little at a time and even it out along the roller. You want to fill it up to the top, making sure it's full but not over-stuffed. Once full, lift the roller pole up and over to seal all the contents inside. \n- 4.) Roll. Use thumbs to roll the pole forward a few times. \n- 5.) Add Paper. Add a single sheet of rolling paper, making sure the sticky side is facing you at the top. Roll forward to roll the paper around the joint. Lick the sticky end, then continue to roll forward and seal the joint. \n- 6.) Light and Enjoy. Open the roller to find your perfectly rolled joint. Now it's time to smoke it. \n \n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n \nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). As a result, they forever turn their backs on vaping cannabis. I don’t blame them—everyone wants a great experience.\r\n\r\nHere are some reasons that may lead to disappointment:\r\n\r\n* Your vaporizer doesn’t match your vaping style.\r\n* You expect exactly the same effects as when you smoke flower.\r\n* You don’t know how to use your vaporizer properly.\r\n\r\nThe first two issues can easily be avoided by doing proper research and managing your expectations. However, the last issue of not knowing how to use your vaporizer properly may require some willingness, practice and experimentation on your end to be resolved.\r\n \r\nThere’s a lot of conflicting information on how to vaporize marijuana. In this post I’ll teach you how to use a dry flower vaporizer properly. Learning to use a vaporizer correctly is easier than you might think. With some practice and experimentation, you’ll be getting those clouds of vapor that you deserve.\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\r\n\r\n### Tip 1: Set Your Vaporizer to an Appropriate Temperature\r\n\r\nDifferent temperatures serve different vaping needs. Generally speaking, the higher you set your temperature dial, the closer you will come to a smoke-like experience and the stronger the effects of your vapor will be. But here’s the kicker: With 90% of vaporizers, the higher you set your temperature the more flavor will deteriorate. \r\n\r\nIf you’ve ever vaped marijuana you might know the burnt popcorn taste. This taste gets more prevalent the higher in temperature you go. Your vapor will also be harsher at higher temperatures. But what exactly is a high and low temperature?\r\n\r\nHere’s a general guideline to temperature for vaping:\r\n\r\n**Low-level vaping temperatures**\r\n\r\n320°F(160°C) – 356°F(180°C) effects:\r\n\r\n* Light mental medication\r\n* Very weak bodily effects\r\n* Best for flavor\r\n\r\n**Mid-level vaping temperatures** \r\n\r\n356°F(180°C) – 392°F(200°C) effects:\r\n\r\n* Moderate to strong mental and physical medication\r\n* Mental and bodily effects both equally apparent\r\n* Good for flavor\r\n\r\n**High-level vaping temperatures** \r\n\r\n392°F(200°C) – 446°F(230°C) effects:\r\n\r\n* Intense mental and physical medication\r\n* Bodily effects will be very strong\r\n* Harsh flavor\r\n\r\nIf you’re not feeling the effects of your marijuana, check your temperature and turn the dial up a bit to experiment. \r\n\r\n### Tip 2: Conduction & Convection Vaporizers Require Different Grinds\r\n\r\nNot every dry herb vaporizer needs the same grind. In fact, some vaporizers don’t need a grind at all. They can just take whole nug of flower. To know how to grind the herb for your particular vaporizer, you need to know whether you have a conduction vaporizer or a convection vaporizer.\r\n\r\nIn a conduction vaporizer, heat gets directly transferred between your herb's particles, so \r\nyou need to grind your marijuana as fine as you can. To transfer heat properly in a conduction-heating system, your herb needs to be compact and compactness can be easily achieved with a fine grind.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, since your herb is in direct contact with the heated wands of the heating chamber, you want as many herb particles as possible in contact with it. The finer your grind, the more particles you will be exposing to the heated wands of the heating chamber. To grind your herb fine to a level like this, you need a proper marijuana grinder. \r\n\r\nIn convection vaporizers, marijuana gets heated by circulating hot air. As a result, you will want to maximize airflow in your herb chamber, thus a finger-type grind is what you should aim for. \r\n\r\nGrinding your flower allows you to increase the surface area of exposure, so hot air will heat it more thoroughly. If you’re vaping large amounts, it can be annoying to break up a gram of marijuana with your fingers. Luckily, there are herb grinders which provide you with a fluffy finger-type of grind which is perfect for convection vaporizers.\r\n\r\nRELATED: [BEGINNER'S GUIDE: FINDING THE RIGHT MARIJUANA VAPORIZER](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57fbcaf1644283000784a652/beginner-s-guide-finding-the-right-marijuana-vaporizer)\r\n\r\n### Tip 3: Conduction & Convection Vaporizers Require Different Herb Packing\r\n\r\nPacking your vaporizer properly is essential for producing those huge clouds of vapor. How you pack your vaporizer is dependent on whether you have a conduction or convection vaporizer.\r\n\r\nIf you have a conduction vaporizer, pack your vaporizer tightly and compactly, but not so compact that there’s no airflow. The optimal packing level is also different per vaporizer, so ultimately you’ll have to experiment yourself. \r\n\r\nIf you have a convection vaporizer, pack your vaporizer loosely as it's extremely important to have a proper airflow with convection vaporizers. With convection vaporizers, never fill more than 80%-90% and never compress.\r\n\r\nThere are quite a lot of hybrid vaporizers which get advertised as full or just convection vaporizers, when in fact they’re hybrid vaporizers. If you have a hybrid vaporizer, it’s best to pack your vaporizer somewhere between compact and loose. \r\n\r\nLastly, put as much herb in your herb chamber, so that the bottom part of the chamber is covered with the flower. How much differs per vaporizer, but it’s a simple and effective visual check.\r\n\r\n### Tip 4: Draw Correctly From Your Vaporizer \r\n\r\nWhile this is dependent on the particular vaporizer and inhalation method (direct draw, whip or balloon), there are three general tips with regards to drawing:\r\n\r\n1. Most vaporizers work better if you “sip” them instead of “rip” them. This means that you draw in a controlled way, like you would sip tea.\r\n\r\n2. Draw for at least 10 seconds.\r\n\r\n3. If you’re new to vaping, realize that sometimes you may not physically feel the vapor, though you will feel its effects. \r\n\r\n### Tip 5: Keep Your Vaporizer Clean\r\n\r\nThis might seem like an obvious tip, but even I catch myself being lazy with this, then blame my vaporizer for a foul taste or wispy clouds. Sometimes I open my vaporizer and see the screens are clogged with herb residue—the likely cause of my bad experience.\r\n \r\nIt’s extremely important to keep your herb chamber, vapor path and especially the screens in the vapor path clear of herb residue. Most vaporizers can easily be cleansed with ISO alcohol or Q-Tips dipped in ISO alcohol. Never dip your entire vaporizer in ISO alcohol.\r\n\r\nThese five simple tips that can lead to an optimal vaporizer experience. There are specific tips for every individual vaporizer, but regardless of what vaporizer you have, these tips should guide you in the right direction.\r\n\r\nIf you liked this post and want to learn more about vaping marijuana and marijuana vaporizers, check out [Herbonaut](https://www.herbonaut.com) where we review the latest vaporizers and write extensive user guides.\r\n\r\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.
