Tics\r\nare sudden and rapid movements that may be in the form of vocal or motor\r\nspasm-like movements. Those with Tourette's may try to suppress the\r\ntics, but the pressure to express them becomes so intense that they do\r\nso against their will.\r\n\r\nHow Does Tourette's Present?\r\n----------------------------\r\n\r\nTics may be simple or complex, depending on the intensity of movements\r\ninvolved. Simple tics include rapid blinking of the eyes, shoulder\r\njerking, and simple vocalizations, such as grunting or sniffing. Complex\r\ntics involve a whole range of movements, such as facial grimacing\r\ncombined with shoulder jerking and head twists. In extreme forms, tics\r\nmay include motor movements that lead to those suffering from Tourette's\r\nto injure themselves.\r\n\r\nTypically, the symptoms of this neurological condition begin to manifest\r\nin early childhood, and may be hereditary. According to a [2011-2012\r\nstudy](http://journals.lww.com/jrnldbp/Abstract/2014/06000/A_National_Profile_of_Tourette_Syndrome,_2011_2012.2.aspx)\r\nby the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 out of 360\r\nchildren ages 6 to 17 have been diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome in\r\nthe United States. The study also states that boys are affected by the\r\ncondition three to five times more often than girls, while 37 percent of\r\nchildren with Tourette's have moderate to severe forms of the condition.\r\n\r\nObsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) involves repetitive/obsessive\r\nbehavior which is related to Tourette's. Tourette's is also associated\r\nwith mood disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD), and\r\nlearning disabilities.\r\n\r\nPossible Cause and Management of Tourette's\r\n-------------------------------------------\r\n\r\nThe exact cause of Tourette's syndrome is unknown, but research points\r\nto the presence of neurological abnormalities in the circuits connecting\r\ncertain regions of the brain, including the neurotransmitters,\r\nnorepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin, that control communication\r\namong nerve cells. Too much dopamine in the system may contribute to the\r\noccurrence of Tourette's. Medical marijuana or cannabis may help in the\r\nmanagement of this condition because high concentrations of\r\ntetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can help regulate the release of dopamine.\r\n\r\nA 1999 [clinical trial](http://rxmarijuana.com/ajp_tourettes.htm) by\r\nGermany's Medical School of Hanover, Department of Clinical Psychiatry\r\nand Psychotherapy, involved the successful management of Tourette's\r\nthrough the administration of a single dose of 10 mg delta-9-THC to a\r\n25-year-old male patient. In this clinical trial, the severity and\r\noccurrence of tics fell from a total of 41 to 7 within a span of two\r\nhours. Harmful stimuli include damaged\r\ncells, pathogens or irritants, and symptoms of inflammation include\r\ntissue swelling, redness, numbness, pain and heat from the site of the\r\nstimuli. While inflammation is part of a healthy immune system, chronic\r\ninflammation is the outcome of a dysfunction or disruption of those\r\nbodily signals.\r\n\r\nThere are multiple types of inflammation, characterized by length and\r\nseverity. Jamming a finger in the door causes immediate pain and acute\r\ninflammation, but both short-lived. In response to this harmful\r\nstimulus, the immune system kicks in by sending an army of white blood\r\ncells and other necessary substances to initiate the healing process. By\r\ncontrast, chronic inflammation is a state of persistent stimuli, which\r\nmay be triggered by anything from a lingering infection to allergies. A\r\nmalfunction of the healthy immune response could also result in an\r\nautoimmune disease, whereby the immune system mistakenly attacks the\r\nhealthy cells in the body.\r\n\r\nChronic inflammation can last for years, and is a major factor in\r\nnumerous autoimmune ailments such as multiple sclerosis, lupus,\r\narthritis and colitis. According to the National Institutes of Health\r\n(NIH), there are more than 80 types of [autoimmune\r\ndisorders](http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000816.htm),\r\nand the current immunosuppressive medicines used to treat them tend to\r\ncause severe side effects.\r\n\r\nIn 2009, the NIH published a\r\n[review](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2664885/) of\r\ncollated reports on the anti-inflammatory activities of cannabinoids,\r\none of the compounds in medical marijuana, with regards to its effects\r\non inflammation. The report revealed that cannabidiol (an abundant\r\nnon-psychoactive cannabinoid in marijuana), reduced joint inflammation\r\nin collagen-induced arthritis.\r\n\r\nThe cannabinoid receptors in the body, mainly the cannabinoid receptor 2\r\n(CB2), are targeted by the cannabinoids in medical marijuana. When the\r\nreceptors are activated, they release fewer cytokines (pro-inflammatory\r\nmediators).\r\n\r\nBeta-caryophyllene is the main substance in medical marijuana that helps\r\ncontrol inflammation. Medical marijuana's essential oils are composed of\r\nbetween 12 to 35 percent of Beta-caryophyllene, which [has been\r\nshown](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2664885/) to decrease\r\ninflammation by up to 70 percent in the animals tested. It generally affects\r\nthe beginning of the large intestine and the lower section of the small\r\nbowel. Symptoms of Crohn's Disease include persistent diarrhea,\r\nabdominal pain and intestinal obstruction, occasionally combined with\r\nrectal bleeding. Some two-thirds of patients with Crohn's will require\r\nsurgery at some point during their lifetime to reduce their symptoms.\r\n\r\nNew Research Suggests Medical Marijuana Can Help\r\n------------------------------------------------\r\n\r\nDr. Jeffrey Hergenrather recently [published research in the journal\r\nClinical Gastroenterology and\r\nHepatology](http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1542356513006046)\r\nthat suggests that medical marijuana may offer relief to certain\r\npatients with Crohn's disease. Because patients with Crohn's or\r\nirritable bowel disease (IBD) have high levels of endocannabinoid\r\nreceptors in their GI tract, Hergenrather wondered if the cannabinoids\r\nin marijuana could reduce their inflammation.\r\n\r\nIn his study, published in 2013, Hergenrather found that 10 out of 11\r\npatients who were treated with medical marijuana had \"significant\r\nreduction in symptoms.\" Five of those patients experienced a complete\r\nremission of the disease.\r\n\r\n\"This has a huge effect on patients with Crohn's disease,\" said\r\nHergenrather in [an interview\r\nwith](http://www.beyondthc.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Hergenrather-CME.pdf)\r\n*[O'Shaugnessy's](http://www.beyondthc.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Hergenrather-CME.pdf)*.\r\nHe originally conceived of the study in 2000 when he compared notes with\r\nother clinicians about the effects medical marijuana was having on their\r\npatients. \"We noticed right off that people were saying cannabis was\r\nworking for Crohn's Disease,\" he says.\r\n\r\nThe Science Behind the Cure\r\n---------------------------\r\n\r\nCannabis acts on receptors in the brain called CB1 and CB2, which are\r\nprotein molecules that change their shape when they encounter a chemical\r\nstimulus. Stimulation of CB1 and CB2 receptors causes changes in brain\r\nand body function. CB1 and CB2 are receptors that change their shape when\r\nthey encounter cannabinoids like THC. This process occurs in the GI\r\ntract when medical marijuana is used. Due to the fact that both CB1 and\r\nCB2 cannabinoid receptors are found in the digestive system, medical\r\nmarijuana is particularly promising as a treatment regimen for patients\r\nwith digestive disorders. When medical marijuana activates CB1 receptors\r\nintestinal movement is decreased, which can potentially help treat\r\npersistent diarrhea. When CB2 cannabinoid receptors are activated by\r\nmedical marijuana, they decrease the production of the immune cells\r\nresponsible for inflammation. Additionally, THC has been shown to help\r\nreduce fluid leakage through the lining of the GI tract.\r\n\r\nWhile edibles are not always ideal for patients with Crohn's, due to the\r\nsensitivity of their stomachs, they are the fastest way to get\r\ncannabinoids to the receptors in the GI tract. The Israeli researcher Raphel Mechoulam first found the cannabinoid compounds in cannabis in the 1960s. Mechoulam identified that all human cells had receptors that were designed to react with cannabis. The first studies showing the connection between cannabis and the shrinkage of tumors were done in the United States in the 1970s. The Medical College of Virginia set out to test the affects of THC on the immune system and found slowed growth of tumors in mice that experienced three different kinds of cancer. Yet, at the time, no major news outlets reported the findings. These findings, however, did lead to the wave of synthetic THC-like products created by pharmaceutical companies in attempt to achieve the same affects of cannabis on the rats that had been tested in the trials.\r\n\r\nIn 2000 Manuel Guzman, a Spanish researcher, saw negative cell growth in cancer cells. The cancer cells shrunk and died with no adverse affects towards the patients. When THC connects to receptors on the cancer cell, it causes an increase in ceramide synthesis. Essentially, the THC takes away the ability of the mitochondria to produce energy to power the cancer cell, leading to death of the cell. Though there has been promising research between the links of cancer cell shrinkage, the most common use of cannabis in connection with pain relief is in conjunction with chemotherapy. Most cannabis treatments related to cancer relief are high in THC. Though THC can have physco-active properties, it aids tremendously in relieving the side affects associated with chemotherapy which may include nausea, loss of apetite, general feelings of malaise as well as general inflammation.\r\n\r\nTHC has been found to be helpful in reducing the inflammation caused by chemotherapy. Swelling and inflammation of areas of the body, such as the gut, are common. Cannabis can help quell some of the symptoms and make them more bearable to cancer patients. The other well known and common symptom of chemotherapy is lack of appetite. Cannabis activates the CB1 receptor on the body’s cells. CB1 activation prompts the pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) nerve cell that promotes the appetite. The symptom of recreational marijuana use known as the “munchies” is extremely beneficial in helping fight a common cancer symptom. There are also new findings that cannabis can help with the treatment of neuropathic, damaged nerve, pain.\r\n\r\nCurrently, in US states where medical marijuana is not yet legal, there are synthetic drugs based on cannabis that have been approved for medical use. Dronabinol is a synthetic THC capsule that has been approved by the FDA to treat nausea, vomiting, and weight loss/ poor appetite caused by chemotherapy. Nabilone is synthetic cannabinoid much like THC which is taken to cure nausea and vomiting during chemotheraphy when other drugs do not work for patients. In other countries, such as Canada and parts of Europe, Nabiximols is a spray made from whole cannabis extracts (THC and CBD) to treat pain linked to cancer that has proved successful.  Medicinal marijuana products, such as Nabiximols, which have been made available in other countries, have proved very successful against cancer symptoms. Due to the success of cannabis, the American Cancer Society greatly supports more scientific research. The American Cancer Society sees a lack of adequate treatments for cancer patients and sees promising studies and results in the use of marijuana.\r\n\r\nSo, if cannabis is so useful in the treatment of cancer, then how are people using it? There is a misconception that all people who use marijuana are smoking it. While there certainly are a lot of people who may choose to smoke their medicine, there is an ever increasing number of cannabis products available that are not smoked. \r\n\r\nWhen you think of cancer patients ingesting medical marijuana do you think of someone lighting up a joint? If you do, perhaps it is time to rethink how people are using medical marijuana, specifically patients with cancer. The use of cannabis oil to treat ailments, such as cancer, is attributed to Rick Simpson. Rick Simpson is a Canadian marijuana guru who was known for his “miracle oil”. Across the Internet there are also various homemade recipes available to make your own cannabis oil.  Cannabis oil can be made with different blends of cannabis strains for different desired effects. Cannabis oil can be blended for different levels of THC and CBD. All cannabis oils, however, are essential oil distilled from the cannabis plant. Cannabis oils are most often consumed by using an oral syringe to put the desired dosage into pill capsules, the capsules are then taken like a normal pill. Constance Finley, an east bay marijuana grower, created a specialized cannabis oil for medical uses. Her concentrated cannabis oil is a blend of 72% THC and 11% CBD. The cannabis oil from Constance Pure Botanical Extracts is created using only bud flowers from the marijuana plant to produce the oil with no added fillers. Finley became known for her cannabis oils after her extreme success rates with cancer patients. She received 26 referrals of patients with stage 4 cancer. The cannabis oil, used in association with traditional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, claimed a 96% survival rate. If compared to formal clinical trials, a 96% survival rate is unseen at such an advanced stage of cancer.\r\n\r\nSome cannabis distributers create cannabis oils specifically for the alleviation of cancer symptoms, rather than ones which have just had success with it. The Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM), an organization in Santa Cruz, has created their Milagro Oil which was targeted toward cancer symptoms. The oil from WAMM is made with a blend of organic marijuana varieties utilizing all parts of the marijuana plant, each for a different purpose. The plaques disrupt cell communication leading to loss of\r\nfunction. Additionally, tau proteins form tangled fibers inside the\r\nbrain cells, preventing nutrients from reaching the cells.
