For many of us, this means time spent with family, which—depending on your situation—can be good, bad or somewhere in between. As someone who consumes cannabis and who also works in the industry, I’m constantly peppered with questions about cannabis—and cannabidiol (CBD) from hemp in particular—during this time. \n\nPart of being a responsible cannabis consumer is doing your best to properly educate those who may not know much about the plant. And since CBD is such a hot topic these days, it’s only natural that friends and family members are curious about this powerful molecule. Based off of the questions I’m always asked, it’s clear there’s still a lot of confusion about what CBD is and what it can (and can’t) do. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThis year, I’ve decided to do a little prep work before the holidays, and I’m passing the fruits of my labor on to you. The following are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions I get from friends and family about hemp CBD. \n\n\n### 1. Will Hemp CBD Help With My [Insert Condition]? \n\nI’m not a doctor and not qualified to answer questions like this. But since it’s family that’s typically asking me this question, I offer up what I do know. I always tell them that CBD has the following properties:\n\n* Anti-inflammatory\n* Anti-anxiety\n* Anti-emetic (i.e., effective against vomiting and nausea)\n* Neuroprotective\n* Antidepressant\n* Antifungal\n* Antibacterial\n* Antispasmodic\n\nBut I also mention many of the studies that were conducted to get this information weren’t done on humans. There is, however, plenty of anecdotal evidence that CBD can help with a lot of conditions.\n\nSo, the real answer to their question is always maybe. The only way for them to know is to try it themselves. \n\nA lot of times CBD can seem like a cure-all, but it’s not. And it’s important to mention this to family members who are thinking of trying it, so they can have appropriate expectations. How & Where Do I Buy Hemp CBD?\n\nThere’s a lot of low-quality CBD out there. Hemp is a bioaccumulator—that means it often absorbs a lot of what’s in the soil, and this then builds up in the plant’s tissues. This includes heavy metals and pesticides. These substances can then get passed along to consumers.   \n\nThis is why it’s so important that anyone who’s looking to buy CBD, keeps a few things in mind. In general, the CBD you buy should:\n\n* Come from Europe or the U.S. \n* Have test results that are readily available\n\nTest results are important. They show you how much CBD is actually in the product, and they can also let you know if there are any residual pesticides or solvents. \n\nFor me, this question is now easier to answer, given that [HelloMD now sells hemp-derived CBD nationwide](https://www.hellomd.com/products?all). How Should I Take Hemp CBD?\n\nLet your family members know the basic CBD consumption options:\n\n* Tincture\n* Topical\n* Vaporizer\n* Capsules\n\nThere are other ways to consume CBD, like smoking it for instance, but the four ways listed above are the easiest for newcomers to access. The method of consumption is really up to them.\n\nWhen you’re first starting out, it’s a good idea to try at least two different methods to see which ones, if any, work better for you. \n\n### 4. How Much CBD Should I Take?\n\nFiguring out dosage is hard. Tell your family members this so they don’t get frustrated right off the bat. Always start with a small amount—like milligrams in the single digits—and take more until you get the effects that you want. \n\nLet them know that experimenting is the only way to find your ideal dose. That said, there are things they can do to make it easier. Recommend that they [get a journal to keep track of their dosing](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b46588b8904b90007731ad3/journaling-your-way-to-the-best-cannabis-experience). And encourage them to try a variety of consumption methods from different brands as well. \n\nAlso mention that sometimes you need to take CBD every day for a month (or even more) to see any results. I’ve interviewed a lot of people who use CBD to address a certain condition, and the majority of them agree that to truly reap CBD’s benefits, you have to take it daily. \n\n### 5. CBD Is From Hemp so It’s Good & THC Is From Marijuana so It’s Bad, Right? \n\nI always sigh when I get this question, because properly addressing it would require a deep dive into the history and politics behind marijuana prohibition. And it would also involve a lesson on genetics. So instead, I usually offer up a simple answer:\n\nCBD and THC come from the same plant: _Cannabis sativa_. Over thousands of years, we’ve domesticated this plant and bred it for different purposes. I like to compare what we’ve done to cannabis with what we’ve done to dogs; it makes this genetic concept easier to grasp. \n\nAll dogs are the same species, but over thousands of years of breeding, we’ve selected certain traits that we liked and bred for them. That’s why a Chihuahua and a Great Dane may look totally different, but fundamentally, they’re the same: They’re both dogs. \n\nThis is the same case with cannabis: Marijuana and hemp may look different and have different purposes, but they’re fundamentally still the same plant.\n\nMarijuana refers to plants that’ve been bred to have a high THC content, but this doesn’t mean that marijuana has no CBD. Meanwhile, hemp refers to crops that are bred for food, fiber and industrial purposes. And since hemp also contains CBD, we’re now growing it for that reason, too. \n\nSo, CBD can come from both hemp and marijuana. If your family lives in a state where medical or recreational cannabis is legal, they’ll likely have access to CBD from both marijuana and hemp. If they live in a state where cannabis is illegal, hemp is their best bet for accessing CBD. \n\nAfter all of this, if you still have the energy to explain that THC can be good, go for it. CBD gets all of the attention, but THC has therapeutic properties, too. It’s good for pain, sleep and nausea—just like CBD is. \n\nCBD is a rich topic, and if family members truly want to be educated on this subject, they’re going to have to do a little reading and researching themselves—and HelloMD’s a great place to start. For example, I worked at Microsoft for about 12 years as a security strategist, and then I moved down to Zynga, a game company down in the Valley for about three years. And I love using data to help people make better business decisions.\n\nSo that's my background. And when I was at Zynga, my mom had a massive stroke so she was hospitalized, then came home from the hospital and rehabilitated with over a dozen opioid prescriptions. And really, I can remember the day we sat down around our table. We just dumped out her medicines and started looking at the associated side effects, and all of the things that we had to put into her body to maintain her. And it was uppers and downers and you know, things to loosen up what we were tightening up earlier. \n\nSo it just seemed to me that it was going to kill her. And so I knew nothing about cannabis medicine or therapy at the time. I really grew up firmly in the “Just say no” generation, and I just hadn't known anything about that and hadn't known to research it, hadn't had a reason to. So I went to her doctor with a manila envelope full of my own research and just asked if I could do some research on a set of products or products that might work for my mom.\n\nAnd he was too busy to care. He basically said, “Yeah, go ahead. Do what you need to do. Let me know if you find a new thing. You know, he wasn't going to take the time to know anymore. It wasn't his area of expertise. So he said, “Go find a product for your mom.”\n\nAnd I went looking in the Colorado market. That's where I was born and raised. And really in my search, I was surprised that I couldn't find a product that I would put on her body, that was clean enough to put on my mom. And I found a transdermal patch, which I thought was the perfect form factor for somebody like my mom. \n\nLots of chronic pain, but no way to ingest or inhale a solution really. She'd had a tracheotomy, lost the left side to paralysis and other issues. So she needed something that would go through her skin and into her bloodstream directly that was the same every time. And that's one of the things I also had a hard time finding: a product that was made the same way every time—that would go into her body the same way every time. \n\n### And when you say you had a hard time finding a product, you were looking at all plant-based medicine, and not just cannabis, but also other plant forms? \n\n**SB:** Primarily cannabis and hemp in Colorado. I was really surprised with the quality issues. People were really not producing good quality products. I was surprised that nobody had to care about good manufacturing processes.\n\nSo I called a company in the Midwest that made patch-making equipment, and they happened to have a consulting arm of organic chemists, and they love to do interesting things with chemistry. And they asked if I wanted to partner with them on a prototype. Little did I know that this meant we would have to get this company a DEA certification to even work with the hemp plant material in our lab in Ohio—which they did.\n\nBut then it would take us about a year to prototype a hemp CBD patch for my mom. How has your transition been from the high-heeled New York fashion world to NorCal cannabis? \n\n**Claudia Mata:** My husband Zander grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, so moving back seemed like a natural fit, especially after starting a family. We'd been living in New York for 15 years, and at the time we decided to leave, I was pregnant with our second baby. Marin County is stunning, and the lifestyle is so unique, we already knew that we wanted to raise a family here, even though we started having children in New York City.\n\nGoing from the fashion world into the cannabis industry doesn't seem like the most obvious transition. But Zander, who’s also my co-founder, has a family history in cannabis farming. His brother has his own cannabis farm, so this has always been a dinner topic for us. Conversations about starting Vertly came up naturally, especially as cannabis has become legal. Our family began talking about the implications of legalization and what an exciting time it is to land in this industry.\n\n### Vertly focuses on the hemp CBD topicals market, with your Relief Lotion, Body Lotion and Luscious Lip Butter. And this is sometimes true, but not always. I will say for the fashion industry, that it’s a very competitive and interesting field to work within. Obviously, you not only need to be stylish and interested in that sort of thing, but you need to have excellent diplomacy skills at all levels, managing a variety of personalities, as you can imagine.\n\nI feel like it was great preparation for coming into the cannabis industry, because I became capable of dealing with all kinds of scenarios and also of pushing the envelope, seeing what I could do and needing to be extremely creative and jumping all in. It helped me to become fearless.\n\n### You’ve mentioned clean beauty, and you put a lot of emphasis on the overall quality of your products. How did this philosophy inform the creation of your hemp CBD beauty products? \n\n**CM:** I think of the creation and consumption of clean beauty products as similar to what happened with the food revolution. People over time have become aware and educated about how their food is being grown and what it actually does within your body.\n\nTo a lot of people, it was not so clear that beauty products have a similar effect to what you put into your body. Most beauty products are used externally and are absorbed through your skin, and your skin is the largest organ in your body. What you put on your body should have as much emphasis as what you put within your body.\n\nWhen I was pregnant with my first child, I took such great care with everything that I was doing. New mothers often will do that, hyper-naturally. You want everything that you expose your unborn child to be pure and clean and wonderful.\n\nThis just made me more aware of certain details within my own beauty routine that I wasn't really aware of before. For instance, I started to think about preservatives. There are ways to use organic oils to preserve your ingredients, rather than more toxic substances. I found cleaner ways to preserve beauty products that are actually good for your skin and your health, and gentler on the body in every way. I became obsessive about reading labels, and I still do that.\n\n### You mentioned that herbalism informed your formulation of Vertly products as well?\n\n**CM:** Yes, that’s true. Before my first pregnancy, I used to use a very expensive night cream all of the time, because I loved it. When I became more educated, I looked at the ingredients, and I was shocked. Many ingredients were horrible for your body. So, I started to really focus on the idea of clean, organic ingredients. When I finally moved to California, I started studying herbalism and how this might support our product development. \n\n### Why have you made hemp-derived CBD a cornerstone of the Vertly product line?\n\n**CM:** When I first started to use CBD within beauty, I saw the positive impact it might have within the industry and the consumers who use skincare products. Now that more studies are being done on the efficacy and positive therapeutic benefits of CBD, the more I think brands will incorporate it into their products. It’s also important to note that hemp-derived CBD is completely non-psychoactive.\n\nYou hear lot about it, and it’s kind of a fad, but I do think that if given the opportunity, it's something that will stand the test of time. CBD is an excellent anti-inflammatory for instance, and that’s positive for most skin types across the board.\n\nCBD’s also good for acne, can help stimulate a more youthful appearance and is really great for bodily aches and pains, like lower back pain. It’s full of antioxidants and simultaneously can help with dry skin, eczema and even sunburns. CBD is an element that people will gain more understanding about and see that it's a natural plant-based element. \n\n### How much do you miss New York, and would you ever move back?\n\n**CM:** No, I don't think so. I'm really enjoying the Californian lifestyle, and what I’m doing within the cannabis industry. Also, where we live in Marin County, it's just so beautiful. Personally, I feel I can’t go a day without being full of gratitude for life, because when I drive, I see such beauty around me. I feel very balanced. So, I was very interested in finding some relief.\n\nBut I really had an opposition to using over-the-counter or prescription medication, so was always sort of in limbo, getting naturopathic healing and not really finding something very effective. And then that's how we sort of really got strongly interested in CBD. \n\nSo, we launched Wildflower about four years ago. When we first started the business, we were going to be a cannabis-focused, a THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)-focused brand. And so, at first we were developing vaporizers. And then when we came to discover CBD and the potential of it, we sort of switched our focus towards more than the recreational and just really on the wellness side of things.\n\nAnd since then, from the beginning, we were very focused, not just on the sort of medical aspect of things, but also on our branding and the way you present things so that it's accessible to everybody. So, it had a very, very solid technology.\n\nMost of the vaporizers out there, when you open them up, they’re quite cheap, and there are a lot of harmful metals and other things that are in them. So, we were really intrigued by this technology, and we had a partner that we work with to make the concentration, the CBD oil.\n\nIt was my idea to combine the essential oils, because we really believe in plant medicine and the healing properties the plants give us naturally. Other people have said you should never combine essential oils even though we understand that they're essentially terpenes. How do you stand behind the safety and the inhalation of the different oils that you have in your hemp-based CBD vaporizers? \n\n**AY:** Wildflower's vaporizers are a smart and modern CBD delivery device.  When you breathe in air from the device, the suction activates a small battery [to heat] up the liquid CBD formulation. As the CBD oil heats up, it turns into a mist consisting of oil vapor and carbon dioxide, along with the active compounds released from the CBD and essential oils. \n\nVaping isn’t the same as smoking. How do you make sure that all of your ingredients are of the highest quality?\n\n**AY:** We try to cultivate a relationship with all of our partners wherever the ingredient is coming from. In terms of CBD and extractions, we do visit the sites, and we work with the best, in our opinion, the best extractors responsible. Our CBD is sourced from the EU, so in order to vet that, we talk to partner overseas and we do independent lab testing on our oils.\n\n### You mentioned using your products for anxiety. Using CBD for pain relief has been researched since the 1970s, but it wasn’t until the early 2000s that research began to explore the use of CBD for topical and transdermal systems of pain relief.\n\nResearch has shown several ways CBD leads to pain relief in the body including using the adenosine pathway. But the complete mechanism is still being discovered. We continue to perform research ourselves and collaborate with other researchers to determine how CBD works in the body. \n\n### Why did Basic Jane choose to use hemp-derived CBD vs. CBD from cannabis marijuana or even a THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) topical?\n\n**JT:** The CBD molecule derived from any cannabis plant, hemp or marijuana, is exactly the same molecule. Hemp plants simply don’t produce high levels of THC. \nAt Basic Jane, our goal is to build effective pain relief products. We began our research to find the perfect pain relief formulation by exploring multiple compounds from cannabis. The data led us to CBD. We found people had the greatest pain relief with products containing CBD. \n\nIt was a natural transition for us to move to _Cannabis sativa_ plants with less than 0.3% THC—hemp—to manufacture our products. CBD does, however, contain extremely unique properties that may make it a great addition to your daily health regime.\n\nCBD’s primary job is to interact with your body’s [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5751cbd970410e000b00003a/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) (ECS), which is responsible for maintaining homeostasis within all of the other systems in your body. For instance, the ECS is thought to modulate:\n\n* sleep\n* appetite\n* our immune system \n\nRecently, CBD has come into the limelight for being an excellent pain reliever and a powerful anti-inflammatory. CBD also contains powerful antioxidants, more powerful than those found in vitamins C and E. Antioxidants inhibit oxidation, which is what leads to more free radicals that in turn damage our cells. Diets that are rich in antioxidants are linked to reduced risk of diseases like Parkinson’s disease and even arthritis.\n\nCBD, and cannabis in general, has also been shown in research to help improve the [gut biome](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4940133). Overall, CBD is an excellent addition to dietary health supplements due to its wide-ranging list of therapeutic benefits.\n\n### 4. Prolonged feelings of stress can lead to anxiety, which may cause a host of issues including a sense of fear, uneasiness, nausea and insomnia, among other uncomfortable symptoms. New research indicates that [cannabinoids, including CBD, are an excellent way to relieve anxiety](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00213-017-4648-z) naturally without the nasty side effects common to many pharmaceuticals. It’s thought that CBD specifically [boosts serotonin receptors](https://www.cannabisreports.com/cannabis-studies/cannabidiol-induces-rapid-acting-antidepressant-like-effects-and-enhances-cortical-5-htglutamate-neurotransmission-role-of-5-ht1a-receptors), which can help reduce anxiety overall.\n\nCBD may provide immediate relief for anxiety by relaxing muscles, easing feelings of bodily pain and providing an overall sense of calm. Anxiety-related disorders that seem to respond positively to CBD are: \n\n* panic disorders\n* social phobias\n* general anxiety disorders\n* obsessive compulsive disorder\n* PTSD\n\nAnecdotally, CBD also seems to work well for people under immediate pressure, like when they’re giving a presentation at work or dealing with a looming deadline. \n\nCBD helped me with my own anxiety, as there was a time when I suffered from panic attacks. My doctor had put me on propranolol, which calmed me, but also left me feeling out of sorts. Unfortunately, panic attacks put you into a downward spiral, because it leaves you wondering when it will happen next. And once you start thinking about it, the thought of a panic attack is often enough to bring the next one on.\n\nBut, after starting on CBD for my migraines, I noticed an amazing side effect: My anxiety levels dropped significantly. After many years of taking CBD, I can easily say I rarely, if ever, feel anxiety. In fact, I attribute CBD for allowing me to feel comfortable giving presentations on stage to hundreds of people—without any of the intense feelings of anxiety that used to plague me. \n\n### 5. CBD Promotes New Cell Growth Even as it Protects Your Brain\n\nCBD helps promote new growth of neurons within the brain, which is great news for your brain. Researchers from a hospital in Madrid recently published a study regarding CBD’s neuroprotective qualities stating that, “[their] findings demonstrate that [CBD exerts robust neuroprotective effects](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23587650).”\n\nCBD also seems to decrease inflammation in the brain, which is good news for those who endure traumatic head injuries. So far, it appears CBD is not only a good preventative, protecting against damage, but may also encourage healing.\n\nInterestingly, the U.S. government has a patent, #6,630,507, which states, “cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties,” and also that they have “particular application[s] as neuroprotectants—for example, in limiting neurological damage following … stroke and trauma, the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, [etc.].”\n\n### 6. It seemed I was able to maintain a much lower body weight—something that hadn’t come easily beforehand.\n\nIn fact, by consuming CBD along with exercise and a healthy diet, I dropped two pant sizes and have since maintained the same weight I was at in my early 20s. There’s all sorts of evidence that as we age our metabolism slows down considerably, and yet suddenly, weight gain wasn’t an issue for me anymore. I began to wonder why.\n\nAccording to [World Health](https://worldhealth.net/news/cbd-and-metabolism/), \n“CBD stimulates genes and proteins, which play roles in increasing fat breakdown; CBD can boost activity and numbers of mitochondria increasing the body’s ability to burn calories; and CBD decreases expression of proteins which are involved in creating new fat cells within the body.”\n\nA new Korean study published in _Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry_ focused on CBD’s ability to prevent obesity. Researchers found the cannabinoid was able to better break down and increase the oxidation of fat, increase the number and activation of mitochondria (read: it was able to burn more calories), and decrease overall fat generation.\n\nLastly, it appears that CBD may create what’s known as “fat browning.” Essentially, this means white fat, which stores energy, is converted to brown fat, which burns it.\n\nStill not convinced you should give hemp CBD a try? We believe hemp is good for the environment and good for our bodies. \n\nSome would say our co-founder Paul Benhaim is the original hemp entrepreneur, or “hempreneur.” In the early 1990s, Paul created the first successful hemp nutritional bar in the United Kingdom. Since then, he has penned 10 titles on hemp’s myriad uses and consulted for or founded hemp businesses, including Elixinol and our sister company, Hemp Foods Australia.\n\nToday, Paul is the CEO of EXL (ASX: EXL), our parent company, which IPO’d on the Australian Securities Exchange in January 2018. \n\nThis deep, decades-long relationship with hemp that began with Paul informs everything we do. Before 2017, we sourced our hemp from European farmers. But we wanted to support hemp in the U.S., and we felt it was important to be closer to the grows and have more control over the process. \n\nSo, in 2018, we went into the agriculture business and are now growing much of our own hemp in Colorado. This gives us complete seed-to-sale control over the process. And it ensures we have not only the quantity of full-spectrum hemp oil we need, but also the quality full-spectrum hemp oil our customers have come to expect from Elixinol.\n\nEvery single one of our products are extracted using the cleanest method available: supercritical CO2. Supercritical CO2 extraction is a familiar process for foods, such as hops and coffee. We prefer it, because it’s a tried-and-true method that produces a pure, full-spectrum hemp oil.\n\nNow, making full-spectrum CBD is more expensive, but the result is so much better for our customers, and that’s why we go the extra mile. I got my start in the hemp CBD industry fighting for reliable quality controls. They’re easy to add to an existing supplement regimen, and they’re discreet—which many customers in more conservative areas appreciate. \n  \n### Other than CBD, are there any additional ingredients that you’d like to highlight?\n\n**CH:** Because we believe in the power of the entire hemp plant, we don’t have to add much to our products—nor do we want to. We let the full-spectrum hemp oil shine through. We grow and manufacture with care to preserve the hundreds of amazing plant compounds that make hemp such a powerful plant. We never add synthetics, and our hemp comes from organic farms. \n\nOur full-spectrum products contain CBD, of course, but they also have the full range of terpenes, flavonoids and cannabinoids available in the hemp plant—keeping THC naturally under 0.3%, of course. Research into the entourage effect is extremely promising, and tracks closely with what we know about plant nutrition: that whole food sources of nutrients are generally best.\n\nOur tinctures contain either MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil, which is credited with being a metabolism-boosting superfood on its own, or coconut oil. And both are excellent partners for lipophilic cannabinoids like CBD. \n\n### When someone is new to CBD, what should they look out for when selecting products for themselves?\n \n**CH:** Thanks for asking this question. It’s important that people understand what to look for in CBD brands, because there are some bad actors out there ruining it for those of us who take the health and wellness of our customers very seriously. \n\nFirst and foremost, customers should demand evidence of third-party, independent, lab potency and purity results for any CBD product. Heck, they should demand test results from all supplement manufacturers, as the industry is largely unregulated.\n\nWe call these certificates of analysis, or COAs. In these reports, customers should verify CBD content, little or no THC. And they should test free of mold, pesticides and heavy metals. Reputable CBD companies will include this information on their websites or will offer it to consumers upon request. We include it right on our main product page, so people know up front what they’re getting. \n\nCustomers should also ask about the source of the hemp or hemp oil used in their favorite CBD products. The United States and European Union are ideal; stay away from hemp and hemp oil products coming out of China, which doesn’t adhere to the same quality controls. If the CBD company doesn’t say where it’s sourcing its hemp, that’s a definite red flag. \n\nWe believe it’s also important to understand whether the product is full spectrum or not. Isolates, by definition, isolate the CBD molecule by heavily processing the hemp plant. Not only does this limit CBD’s effectiveness by removing all of the other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids, the harsh chemical extraction process is almost totally unnecessary. \n\nWe’ve seen companies that use isolates say they have a whole-plant product, because they use parts of the whole hemp plant. That’s so discouraging to see, because reputable companies know the terms “whole plant” or “full spectrum” refer to using the full range of chemical compounds—terpenes, flavonoids and cannabinoids—available in the hemp plant.\n\nAlways ask whether the product is full spectrum or isolate to get the real answer. \n\n### Your company has a fantastic program of giving back to charity. Can you please describe this to us?\n \n**CH:** We’ve been supporting charities since our start, because it’s important to us, and we know it’s important to our customers. Everyone wants to feel as though they’re contributing to organizations doing good work.\n\nThe way our “Giving Back” program works is when customers check out, they can choose from several different charities for veterans, autism, head injuries and more. Elixinol then donates 5% of their purchase amount to the nonprofit of the customer’s choice.\n\nTo date, these customer contributions have added up to over $1 million dollars donated.
