Try Non-Psychoactive CBN","slug":"having-trouble-sleeping-try-non-psychoactive-cbn","content":"If you consumed marijuana that was sitting around for longer than usual or was exposed to open air or sunlight for an extended period of time, you may have felt a little sleepier afterward. Don’t worry, you didn’t imagine it. There’s actually a scientific reason why old cannabis has increased sedative effects. It happens when tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is left out in the open and changes into a lesser-known compound called cannabinol (CBN). \n\nAccording to [Steep Hill Labs](https://www.steephill.com/), one of the leading cannabis testing labs in the country, [CBN is a very useful and unique cannabinoid](http://steephill.com/blogs/34/Cannabinol-(CBD)) that can help people who suffer from sleep disorders, need a sedative to control conditions like muscle spasms or anxiety, or have vision issues like glaucoma—without psychoactive effects. \n\n### How Does THC Turn Into CBN? \n\n![Your cannabis can contain THC which can turn into CBN over time.](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_6_29_36_PM_05e85fb683.png)\n\nExposure to certain elements can alter a cannabinoid’s chemical makeup, pushing it into a new stage of life as a different compound altogether. According to Steep Hill Labs, almost all identified cannabinoids have something in common: They’re stored in the cannabis plant in their acid form until heat is applied, in a **process called decarboxylation**. The heat forces cannabinoids to take on a new chemical make-up that sometimes results in different side effects. \n\nFor example, THC, the cannabinoid that makes us feel high, is stored in the cannabis plant as an acid called THCA, which has no psychoactive effects. But once heat is applied, THCA’s chemical makeup is altered, and it turns into THC.\n\nUnlike most cannabinoids, CBN doesn’t appear as a result of decarboxylation, but instead arises simply from contact with air and UV rays that deteriorate cannabis over time. Steep Hill Labs notes that “most of the CBN found in cannabis is due to the degradation of THC, where THC has oxidized to CBN.” \n\nSo cannabis that has been sitting around for many weeks, exposed to open air or UV rays, will result in more THC turning into CBN. \n\n### CBN Helps You Sleep Without Making You High\n\nSimilar to CBD, CBN has very little to no “high” side effects. But what CBN lacks in psychoactive properties, it makes up for in sedative potential. Some medical cannabis patients may enjoy oxidized cannabis for its ability to help treat [sleep disorders, an issue that affects 60 million Americans](http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90638364) each year.\n\n![Plus gummies has a Sleep formulation with CBN](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_6_34_36_PM_f3b4a03c09.png)\n\n[Cloudberry Sleep gummies by Plus](https://www.plusproducts.com/sleep) include CBN as an ingredient.\n\nSteep Hill Labs says consuming 2.5 to 5 mg of CBN will have a level of sedative effects equal to a mild pharmaceutical sedative-like Diazepam. They say that the right dose of CBN can be a natural treatment option and effective aid for sleeping five to six hours. \n\nIf you prefer cannabis without increased sedative effects, you can easily follow proper storing techniques that can help keep your cannabis fresh for longer. \n\n### CBN as an Alternative to THC \n\nSteep Hill Labs also concluded that CBN can be a “beneficial alternative to THC for treatment.” \n\nThis is a big revelation especially considering that [many medical cannabis patients want treatment options with little to no psychoactive results](https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/a-powerful-new-form-of-medical-marijuana-without-the-high/2016/12/29/81bbf7c0-b5b2-11e6-b8df-600bd9d38a02_story.html?utm_term=.61250fd47f9a), specifically children or elderly patients uncomfortable with being high. As a result, these patients, or their caregivers, often choose CBD-only options, attracted to their lack of psychoactive side effects. \n\n![Peak Extracts offers a CBN chocolate](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_12_26_at_6_37_46_PM_a540ed1fd8.png)\n\n[Peak Extracts](https://www.peakextracts.com/) offers a CBN chocolate.\n \nBut some physicians believe **CBD-only treatments are less effective than treatments that incorporate THC with CBD**. If CBN can be an effective treatment alternative to THC, patients may be able to get the same medical benefits without getting high. \n\nAs with all things cannabis, more research must be done to fully understand all of the treatment applications for CBN and whether the cannabinoid is truly an effective alternative to THC. But if you live in a marijuana-friendly state and suffer from sleep disorders or glaucoma, talk with your doctor about CBN as a potential natural treatment option. \n\n### Get Your Medical Document & Purchase Medical Cannabis\n\nIt's easy to get your medical document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/). Yet many doctors don’t know much about the efficacy of marijuana. Attitudes towards cannabis and the people who consume it are improving, but unfortunately the stigma still lingers. And because marijuana is still illegal at the federal level and classed as a Schedule 1 drug, most physicians don’t receive formal training in schools on medicinal marijuana and there are very few medical studies done on the plant, so doctors don’t have any concrete information to go on. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Doctors Are Behind the Curve in Medical Marijuana\n\nA recent study conducted by the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis revealed that [medical schools are doing a very poor job in educating their students on cannabis](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28892720)—medical or recreational. \n\nIn a survey that included more than 100 medical school deans and 258 medical residents and fellows, 85% of students admitted that they’d never received any sort of cannabis education. The study also revealed that only 9% of medical schools provide any kind of cannabis education to their students—despite 29 states (plus the District of Columbia) having access to some form of legal medical or recreational marijuana. \n\n### The Legal Gray Area in Marijuana as Medicine\n\nCannabis has been intentionally shut out of the conversation when it comes to medicine in the U.S. Although at the state level cannabis is legal in some locations, the federal government maintains that it's still illegal and has listed it as a Schedule 1 controlled substance, along with drugs like heroin, LSD and ecstasy. This classification means that in the eyes of the federal government, marijuana has no known medical uses whatsoever. This also makes it extremely difficult for researchers to gain access to marijuana for studies. \n\nHelloMD’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Perry Solomon notes, ”The U.S. government’s stance creates an environment of fear for most practicing physicians, who must keep up with the most current laws in their state to ensure that they're allowed to recommend cannabis to their patients. Even if this is the case, most worry, unnecessarily, that they’ll get in trouble with the D.E.A. if they do so. Thankfully, there hasn’t been a government crackdown on prescribing physicians in legal states in many years. \n\n“There have been more than 8,000 studies done worldwide showing the efficacy of cannabis in treating a variety of medical conditions. However, the tendency of U.S. physicians is to only look at studies that come from the mainstream medical schools and universities in this country. The Schedule 1 status of cannabis makes those studies very difficult to perform.”\n\nRELATED: [SURVEY REVEALS 76% OF DOCTORS WOULD APPROVE MEDICAL MARIJUANA USE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55f45ff26463310006530000/survey-reveals-76-of-doctors-would-approve-medical-marijuana-use)\n\n### Fighting on the Front Lines for Cannabis\n\nSome organizations within the medical community like [The American Cannabis Nurses Association](https://cannabisnurses.org) advocate for the use of cannabis in medical treatment. These groups raise awareness of medicinal cannabis among healthcare providers through education, research and policy development. \n\nHelloMD is also a great resource to connect to doctors who’ve studied medicinal marijuana extensively. We offer access to doctors for consultations as well as the [Answers](https://www.hellomd.com/answers) platform, where folks can ask a medical professional about anything and everything marijuana related.\n\n### Doctors Need to Know about Cannabis\n\nAs more people gain access to medical marijuana, doctors need to be knowledgeable about:\n\n>* how the plant affects the body—an in-depth understanding of how the endocannabinoid system functions.\n>* the various conditions that cannabis can treat.\n>* perhaps most importantly, how it interacts with other prescription medications. \n\nMost people rely on the folks at their local dispensary or more experienced friends for medicinal marijuana advice, but with other prescriptions you wouldn’t accept guidance in regards to dosage, consumption method or side effects from anyone but your doctor. It’s time for medical schools to get up to speed with the ways people are using cannabis as medicine so that patients receive informed, professional and safe advice.\n\nPhoto credit: [Jesse Orrico](https://unsplash.com/@jessedo81)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. In response to this, we launched [Answers](https://www.hellomd.com/answers). Answers allows people to ask any cannabis related question on our platform and get answers from the community as well as our doctors and nurses. \n\nThis week, we highlight 3 popular questions and answers we have received:\n\n### Q: How many milligrams of THC are in a typical joint?\n\n***I usually smoke joints and I am fine with that. But if I were to start taking edibles instead, what would be a similar dose?***\n\nAnswer @DrEdmunds: If you roll your own, you can calculate the quantity of THC based on the amount of cannabis you are putting in the joint and the concentration of THC known to be in the strain you are using. \n\nIf you are referring to the average dispensary pre-roll, you are talking about 750mg - 1g of cannabis per joint. The average THC concentration in today's strains is around 12%, which is about 3-4 times as potent as strains a couple decades ago. Using these numbers, this means that your typical pre-roll will have approximately 100mg of THC. Some strains have a THC concentration upwards of 25%. \n\nThe bottom line is, a lot! Caution is advised, and many patients will use one joint over several days for this reason. \n\nIn general, I discourage smoking, because marijuana smoke contains carbon monoxide, tar, carcinogens and other chemicals which may be toxic and damaging to body tissues. Vaporizing shredded flower or CO2-extracted oil concentrates are considered safe alternatives, as we are not aware of any damaging substances in marijuana itself. Vaporizers control the temperature of your medicine such that it only turns into vapor, akin to water turning into steam; and they do not burn the cannabis. Therefore, no smoke with its potentially harmful products of combustion is created.\n\n[Read 6 more answers to this question.](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/574b8ccb1e795d0008000086/how-many-milligrams-of-thc-are-in-a-typical-joint)\n\n### Q: What is the best edible for insomnia?\n\n***I use the Kiva bars at a very low dose right now (approx 7 mg THC) but I still wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. I'm new to this and have a low tolerance. I am looking for an edible that will help me sleep but won't make me high?***\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BW0ryc3AkXb/`\n\nAnswer @DrOlson:\nThere are many opinions about insomnia because everyone is different and the cannabis affects everyone differently so be aware that what I suggest usually works but it typically will not work for everyone. We do offer a great chat room with lots of opinions. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nI recommend that you get your CBD and THC at a high 1:1 level and you will sleep. Too many people do high THC and I think that keeps a party in your head all night and when that happens it is an indication you need more CBDs to shut the party down. If in addition you have aches and pains be sure you treat those problem areas with the CBD dominant topical salve and you will sleep well. You may rest better if you keep a vape pen of 1:1, CBD:THC next to your bed in case you wake in the night, 1-2 puffs will likely put you to sleep.\n\n[Read 9 more answers to this question.](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/57ede27f6212ac000be691a6/what-is-the-best-edible-for-insomnia)\n\n### Q: Can I use cannabis as a replacement for Vicodin?\n\n***I suffer from chronic back pain and have been using vicodin. However, my doctor has stated that I need to end my reliance on this drug, and I am looking for a replacement. Advill and others don't provide the relief I am looking for. What cannabis products might be a good choice for me?***\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BXghGg7AClJ/`\n\n\nAnswer @sankMD - Dr Sank:\nLimiting your exposure to opiate medications is a great way to improve your overall health and limit the risks that come with this class of medications. Many patients experience side effects such as nausea, constipation, drowsiness, and poor appetite not to mention the long-term risks of abuse and addiction.\n\nThere are several options for pain control depending on the specific underlying cause of your pain. You may consider non-steroidal pain medications like ibuprofen, naproxen, and meloxicam. Local pain treatment with a lidocaine patch or voltaren gel is also an option with lower risk of side effects. Of course, there are non-pharmaceutical options, which is likely the reason for your question on this site.\n\nThe same principles that apply to traditional medications apply to cannabis. A topical cannabis-infused product is recommended as the first approach to pain control. This could include a cannabis-infused patch, lotion, balm, or ointment applied directly to the skin or massaged into the skin. Higher CBD content products tend to work well for this since there is an anti-inflammatory property associated with CBD.\n\nPain can also be treated with as needed vaporized cannabis products. Vaporizers work well for immediate relief since they take 5 minutes or less to feel the effect. Again, a higher CBD product is preferred due to its anti-inflammatory properties. THC can be effective but tends to be more of a way to distract from pain as opposed to treating the inflammation associated with pain. You own trial and error is important when treating pain. Just remember to use as little as needed for relief without overdoing it.\n\nFinally, don't forget about conservative pain management using physical therapy, massage therapy, heat and cold packs, and acupuncture which can be very effective for certain individuals depending on the underlying cause of the pain.\n\n[Read 7 more answers to this question.](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/571e4eac90a4f9000c000012/can-i-use-cannabis-as-a-replacement-for-vicodin)\n\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Though women often experience menopause in their forties or fifties, peri-menopause can happen as early as in a woman’s mid-thirties. Insomnia during menopause or peri-menopause can be caused by a variety of different factors, many of which are induced by hormonal changes. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThe decreased production of estrogen and progesterone during menopause can both contribute to problems with sleeping. Both estrogen and progesterone are helpful in inducing sleep, as well as keeping people asleep. Other general shifts in levels of hormones can disrupt the normal bodily cycle, leading to increased problems with sleep. Hormonal changes also make the body more vulnerable to environmental stressors that can cause increased sleep disruption like noise, smells, and sounds. \n\n[[image/10]](https://www.getsava.com/shop/alchemy-buy-one-get-one-cartridge/)\n[DEAL: Buy any Relax or Awaken Alchemy blend and battery on Sava and receive Inspire for FREE! ($35 value).](https://www.getsava.com/shop/alchemy-buy-one-get-one-cartridge/)  Limited time offer.\n \nOther side effects of menopause, like hot flashes and emotional changes, can also effect sleep. Hot flashes, which effect many women during menopause, results in a surge of adrenaline that can wake you up or keep you awake if you are trying to fall asleep. Hot flashes also cause general discomfort that can make it difficult for sufferers to relax into sleep. \n\nSome women also experience heightened emotional issues, including depression and anxiety, which can effect sleep as well. Depression and anxiety can increase insomnia by making it particularly hard to fall asleep or disrupting normal sleep patterns. Depression and anxiety can also disrupt sleep patterns by heightening daily stresses and making it harder to handle different events that life brings. \n\n### Cannabis May Help \n\nThere is a close tie between estrogen and the endocannabinoid system. Cannabis can help replace anandamide, a naturally occurring endocannabinoid, which works on both the CB1 and CB2 receptors throughout the body. Anandamide plays an important role in hormonal balance and the regulation of bodily feelings like appetite and pleasure. Cannabis can supplement anandamide, which is broken down more quickly during menopause and peri-menopause. Cannabis helps maintain equilibrium in the body, which can lead to a decrease in symptom severity. \n\nCBD can help reduce anxiety and alleviate depression that can come with menopause. CBD is non-psychoactive and provides calming properties, especially in the form of an Indicia strain. CBD can also provide anti-inflammatory properties and muscle relaxation to aid people with easing themselves into sleep. \n\nTHC is also known to help induce sleep and is a great way to fight many symptoms associated with hormone imbalance. Cannabis has been found to elongate all of the stages of sleep leading up to the REM cycle, allowing people to feel refreshed and rested in the morning. Cannabis allows people to move away from using harsher pharmaceuticals such as Ambian, which can also help improve an overall sense of well being.\n\nIndica strains are a great choice because they provide more sedative and relaxing qualities that make them a successful strain for fighting insomnia. However, many people find that edibles are the best choice for relieving insomnia because edibles allow for a slow release of cannabinoids as they are digested, providing people with a slow and constant release of medication to help keep them asleep throughout the night and the early morning. Often edibles work well when paired with a tincture or a quick hit from a vaporizer to supplement the slow release time and help with the immediate process of falling asleep. \n\n### 5 Cannabis Products \n\n The evidence may be anecdotal, but many women seem to think that marijuana is the best bet for beating the sleepless menopausal nights. Unfortunately, there is no one size fits all. The best way to find out if a product works for you is to start low and slow and keep a sleep diary. Over a period of a week or two, you will know whether a product may work for you and adjust dosages slowly. Be cautious, as too much THC or CBD can often have the opposite effect and may keep you awake. Cannabis consumption is highly personal and what works for one person may not work for another.\n\nThe following products are available throughout California:\n\n### 1. She wanted to buy one right away and take it home to try. “Whoa, Mary” we said. “Let’s talk about how this might work for you.”\n\nWe spent about twenty minutes counseling Mary. We learned about her history of THC use (none). We talked about the value of trying different ratios of the two most prominent cannabinoids, CBD and THC. We discussed how dosing is different for everyone and that the patient has to find the right dose.\n\nMary was very happy to have the information. She thanked us and walked out with a 60 mg (thc) strawberry- banana sucker, in a zip-lock bag for storage between uses. “Mary! Keep in touch and let us know how it worked for you!” We called out as she practically sprinted out the door. Two days later, Mary comes back to report the bad and the good news. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThe first night she did exactly what Grace did: She sucked on the sucker for 30 seconds, putting it back in the zip-lock bag on her night stand. She slept like a baby until about 3 am and then woke up “higher than a kite” as she put it. Gulp. Not the result she wanted.\n\nBut Mary, being a scientifically-minded woman, tried sucking on the candy the following night for only 10 seconds. Bingo! She slept like a baby till morning, with no fog-brain or “dopey” feeling. Mary had found her dose!\n\n### One Third of US Adults Experience Insomnia\n\nOf the many negative health effects of living in a stress-drenched culture, the most common has got to be insomnia. One-third of all adults in the U.S. report that they experience insomnia at one time or another with an estimated one billion sufferers worldwide. Two times as many women as men are affected and over half the people with insomnia are over 65 years old.\n\nPeople seeking insomnia remedies will spend $32 billion annually on products or techniques to help them get to sleep and stay asleep. They are desperate and for good reason. Lack of sleep impacts quality of life in many ways. It increases irritability, lack of concentration, depression, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, among other things.\n\nRELATED: [MEDICAL MARIJUANA EASES INSOMNIA](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55959b7130633100060c0000/no-longer-sleepless-in-seattle-medical-marijuana-eases-insomnia)\n\n### The Cannabis Cure?\n\nAfter years of working with patients suffering from insomnia, we advocate using traditional herbs such as cannabis that have been used for many centuries to help people relax, get to sleep and stay asleep. We now know that the hundred known cannabinoids (chemical compounds) in the plant are most effective when they work together, and in combination with the terpenes and flavonoids also present in the plant. Finding the right combination, and the right dosage, is the goal of every patient, when possible with the help of an experienced cannabis patient counselor.\n\nRELATED DEAL: [25% OFF FIRST PURCHASE WITH TRUE FARMA](http://truefarma.com/hello-md/)\n\n### Dosing & Delivery\n\nWe recommend micro-dosing THC through the membrane of the mouth. Try using suckers, candies, oil and tinctures – any delivery system that enters the blood stream through the oral mucosa -- in order to transport those healing cannabinoids to our body’s endocannabinoid receptors.\n\nMicro-dosing is critical. Most patients do not want to experience psychoactivity. That “high” feeling usually keeps people awake. THC is a great relaxation herb in low doses. But the rule should be “go low, go slow” with all THC-dominant medicines. THC is even more effective when combined with CBD, cannabidiol. In combination with THC, CBD can mitigate against some of the possible psychoactive effects of THC, and bring calm and clarity to the mind.\n\n### Simple Rules to Follow...\n\nHerbal medicine is different for everyone. EVERY INDIVIDUAL is a unique organism, requiring different ratios of chemical compounds in their cannabis medicine, different doses, different delivery systems. Figure out what works best for you.\n\nTake the holistic approach. Look at every aspect of your life to identify the root causes of your sleeplessness such as stress, worry, and anxiety. Start to imaginatively address the root causes while you are treating your daily symptoms sensibly.\n\nMany natural responses to sleep issues are effective: These include the full spectrum from acupuncture to yoga, herbs like Ashwaganda and chamomile tea, massage, mindfulness-based therapies including meditation, Tai Chi and Qi Gong, exercise and healthy eating habits. Sometimes a simple thing like not drinking caffeine after 2 pm can make all the difference (or quitting caffeine and sugar entirely).\n\nAvoid those treatments that cause harm. Most pharmaceuticals come with side effects. Is it worth compromising your liver or kidney function by becoming dependent on chemicals that also leave you with fog- brain, constipation, depression, and worse?\n\nTake charge of your health. Consider placing traditional medicines such as cannabis herbs at the center of your treatment. You will be glad you did.\n\n_____________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. No tipsy, no ‘2 glasses of wine’, no ‘just one more drink’. Either you’re sober, or fall-down drunk.  If this was all we knew, would alcohol carry a stigma? Would more people stay away from it, or talk less openly about it?\r\n\r\nMuch has been said of the stigma surrounding cannabis. As we enter 2017, too many still feel obliged to whisper when referring to cannabis consumption. Or worse, don’t consume at all for some irrational fear of social retribution, or of repeating a bad experience from years ago. \r\n\r\nI don’t whisper. To the contrary, as an entrepreneur in the industry I exercise my responsibility to talk about cannabis whenever anyone will listen. Over the last two years, I have learned how astonishingly little people know about cannabis -  including those who have been whispering in their basements for decades. \r\n\r\n### Creating Positive Experiences\r\n\r\nPeople seem to think there are still only two gears for cannabis – stay sober or get stoned. And ‘stoned’ is where the industry runs into trouble. Stoned is the negative image brought to mind by those who perpetuate the stigma. I get it; it would likely be the same if we thought fall-down drunk was the only gear for alcohol. But we know this not to be true for alcohol, and it is even less true for cannabis. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [WHY DOES CANNABIS MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/why-does-cannabis-make-you-feel-good)\r\n\r\nOf late, we have been conditioned to think about cannabis as either medical or recreational. This may no longer be sufficient. Medical makes people think about disease and possible cures; recreational brings ‘stoned’ to mind. Yet there is so much more. Cannabis – depending how it’s consumed, when it’s consumed, what kind is consumed and most importantly, how much is consumed – can deliver a wide variety of positive, enhanced and safe experiences. \r\n\r\n### What About Cannabis for \"Wellbeing\"?\r\n\r\nIt’s from the people who have been using cannabis recreationally for years that I have learned the most about this. I’ve heard from those suddenly discovering that the right-sized edible has moved them off Ambien and into a healthy sleep pattern. I’ve heard from those surprised to find that a much lower dose than normal actually creates the perfect ‘background music’ to soothe what is otherwise high social anxiety. \r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \r\n\r\n\r\nI’ve also heard from those very pleasantly surprised to discover that a low-dose edible gave them mental energy unlike they ever experienced to knock out an all-day financially modeling session. And I’ve heard from those who realized that parsing out a fraction of what they might otherwise consume on a Saturday night gave them added focus to crush a work-out or a round of golf.\r\n\r\nBut what should we call these types of cannabis usage? I don’t know; call it wellbeing, call it therapeutic or call it your happy place. Just don’t call it stoned. New consumers, returning consumers and even heavy consumers have opportunity ahead of them to experience something different than they thought possible. And safely. Something that will bring a smile to their face. Now that’s worth talking about in 2017.\r\n\r\n_______________________________________________________________________\r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. People from all walks of life are turning to cannabis in lieu of opioids, other medications or alternative therapies because they are feeling the results and relief, with little to no side effects. \n\nWe have started a series of cannabis case studies to outline the positive impact cannabis is having within people's lives. In this week's cannabis success story we speak with Liz who has long suffered from insomnia and migraines. Cannabis has allowed her to not only sleep better but to manage her migraines effectively.\n\n### Liz's Experience with Cannabis\n[![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/586990111eefb000085918c5/embedded_images/586990141eefb000085918c6/Screen_Shot_2017-01-01_at_2.50.27_PM.png)](\nhttps://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/hellomd-news/patient-success/Patient+Case+Study__Liz_Insomnia_final.pdf)\n[Download the PDF](https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/hellomd-news/patient-success/Patient+Case+Study__Liz_Insomnia_final.pdf)\n\n### Chronic Pain History\n\nI have always had insomnia, even as a kid. Why I have never been able to sleep is a mystery to me and my doctors. Once I became an adult I also started to experience migraines. Once they started it was not unusual for me to experience anywhere from  fifteen to twenty a month. They are excruciating and have caused constant pain for me.\n\n### Previous Treatments\n\nPrior to trying cannabis I used Ambien nightly to help me sleep as well as other prescription sleeping pills. For my migraines I tried every drug available including injections. Nothing was working, my migraines were still as bad and I still was not sleeping well. I really tried everything, I exhausted every option before I tried cannabis for the first time.\n\nRELATED: [MARIJUANA & MIGRAINES: SALLY'S SUCCESS STORY](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5834944a14533400080243bc/marijuana-and-migraines-sallys-success-story)\n\n### Cannabis Experience\n\nI began using cannabis 4 years ago, after becoming depressed that nothing else was working. I had heard it might help me so I researched it. First, I started by smoking an indica  flower as a preventative treatment, to see if it might work. At the time, my neurologist was having me keep a sleep journal. After a couple of months of smoking it became clear that I was sleeping much better. The only change I had made was smoking cannabis. \n\nOverall, the severity of my migraines decreased drastically and I was sleeping! Now I take a very active approach and make sure that I smoke regularly as a preventative measure. I typically smoke in the evening just before bedtime, this works for me.\n\n### The Cannabis Tool Kit\n\n### Flower\n\nI make sure to smoke an indica every night before I go to bed. I am not really picky about which one, they all seem to make me drowsy and I typically smoke a pipe. My goal is to make sure I always have some THC in my system, which is the preventative measure for me. Too sweet, too sticky, too large, poorly packaged, too slow to come on and unpredictable with their effect. Lately however, I have discovered a new best friend that comes in a little tin box, and her name is ‘Kiva’ – the perfect marijuana edible.\n\nKiva Terra Bites are made by Kiva Confections one of the leading edible’s manufacturers in California. Their factory in Oakland, and the founding story of the company is impressive, and a wonderful example of how the thriving cannabis industry is uplifting the economy and providing opportunity to thousands of small businesses and their employees. \n\nFounders Kristi Knoblich and her partner Scott Palmer, were both photographers when the economy turned south in 2008. With prospects for photography work dimming, they started growing in their garden to help make ends meet. Upon visiting dispensaries to sell their crop, they observed a gap in the market for lab tested, professionally packaged and labeled edibles, that actually tasted good. With Kiva Confections, they set about meeting this apparent opportunity. \n\nTheir first product – The chocolate bar– sold well. But it was not long before they innovated further with a focus on the wonderful expresso bean, and the Kiva Terra Bite was created.\n\nKristi explains: \n\n“Patients began asking us for a smaller portion of our bars. They would make a motion with their hands, indicating a small, palm sized serving of chocolate.  Scott concluded the chocolate covered espresso bean would fit the description of what they were looking for. The small, simple serving size would promise consumers convenience and the ability to dial down their dose, thereby mitigating their over consumption. And so, Terra was born in November of 2013.  That’s what our company is all about: creating innovative ways people to consume cannabis, and have a positive experience!”\n\nKristi personally showed me around their impressive facility, and I watched in amazement as the espresso beans were created in large, turning cement mixer looking machines, each one carefully and skillfully manned by a production specialist. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/582365ed65e8fd0008884100/embedded_images/582366cf65e8fd0008884107/Screen_Shot_2016-11-09_at_9.58.44_AM.png)\n\n**Kristi inspects one of the chocolate panning machines**\n\nKristi on how they learned the art of covering espresso beans with chocolate:\n\n“We spent some time in Ohio, learning the art of panning from the panning Guru, Kevin Dolan, who has since passed away. Panning is the process of coating the beans or berries in chocolate until they become the target size; it’s like the snowball effect. Now Kiva has a team of expert panners, and they practice their art right here in our facility in Oakland. Our Terra Espresso beans and blueberries have become our most popular products.”\n\nSo why is this the perfect edible, and why have I become such a fan?\n\n#### Portion Size (and dose)\nEach chocolate bean contains 5mg of THC. This makes dosing (or micro dosing) easy and consistent. Just eat as many beans as you want to dose. I personally like to take two beans together, and then might add a third about an hour later. This 10 – 15mg range puts me in a wonderful, happy mood for the evening, enhances the sound of music and leaves me sharp enough to cook and enjoy a delicious meal with my family. It’s the perfect Friday night wind down after a stressful week. \n\n#### Delicious Taste\nThere is no hint of cannabis in the flavor. It’s just a combination of great tasting dark chocolate (which I love) and roasted espresso coffee bean which you just chew up once the chocolate has gone. I am not sure the espresso bean is enough to provide a wake-up kick, but it might, and I personally don’t enjoy getting sleepy with cannabis and so this is an added bonus. \n  \n#### Convenient \nThe beans come in a little round tin, and are easy to pack and carry. There is no wrapper to create trash, or look unsightly as partially unwrapped chocolate does. I have taken the beans camping with me, and to others houses as a dinner guest. Everybody seems to love them!\n\n#### Fast Acting\nI have eaten edibles that take a full two hours to take effect, which is really too long for my purposes.  I can't say why, but my experience with Terra Bites is that you usually feel them within 20 minutes of dosing. Perhaps it's something to do with the chocolate delivery.\n\nAll I can say in conclusion, is that I now keep a ready supply of these wonderful treats. Please don't take them away!\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.1111111111111112,"src":"/static/65fd7abc8ab246eaa103856a33b3f117/14b42/6d4786ff94ae9014c48cf10bd4431662.jpg","srcSet":"/static/65fd7abc8ab246eaa103856a33b3f117/f836f/6d4786ff94ae9014c48cf10bd4431662.jpg 200w,\n/static/65fd7abc8ab246eaa103856a33b3f117/2244e/6d4786ff94ae9014c48cf10bd4431662.jpg 400w,\n/static/65fd7abc8ab246eaa103856a33b3f117/14b42/6d4786ff94ae9014c48cf10bd4431662.jpg 800w,\n/static/65fd7abc8ab246eaa103856a33b3f117/433c6/6d4786ff94ae9014c48cf10bd4431662.jpg 1135w","srcWebp":"/static/65fd7abc8ab246eaa103856a33b3f117/58556/6d4786ff94ae9014c48cf10bd4431662.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/65fd7abc8ab246eaa103856a33b3f117/61e93/6d4786ff94ae9014c48cf10bd4431662.webp 200w,\n/static/65fd7abc8ab246eaa103856a33b3f117/1f5c5/6d4786ff94ae9014c48cf10bd4431662.webp 400w,\n/static/65fd7abc8ab246eaa103856a33b3f117/58556/6d4786ff94ae9014c48cf10bd4431662.webp 800w,\n/static/65fd7abc8ab246eaa103856a33b3f117/b6e4e/6d4786ff94ae9014c48cf10bd4431662.webp 1135w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2179-markdown","title":"Top Marijuana Products to Help with Insomnia","slug":"top-marijuana-products-to-help-with-insomnia","content":"### Cannabis a Great Alternative to Pharma\n\nCannabis is a great alternative to traditional pharmaceutical sleep aids for fighting [insomnia](https://www.hellomd.com/learn/insomnia). Both edibles and vaporizers are great choices for helping people to get to and stay asleep. Edibles provide a slow and steady release of cannabinoids, while vaporizers provide instant relief to help you fall asleep right away. \n\nBoth THC and CBD help to contribute to insomnia relief, as well as many terpenes that are found in cannabis. THC is the component in cannabis that helps people fall asleep, while CBD can help you stay asleep. Cannabis is a great component to add your nightly routine if you often struggle with sleep related problems. Here are three of the best products on the market to help you fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night.\n\n### Terra Bites by Kiva Confections\n\nTerra Bites are bite-sized easy to dose edibles that provide great relief for insomnia sufferers. Kiva’s blueberry terra bites are made with dried blueberries that are coated in cannabis infused milk chocolate. Each Terra Bite has 5 mg of THC, while each container contains a total of 120 mg of THC. Terra bites are a high quality edible that are made with simple ingredients. They are a perfect nighttime treat to satisfy your sweet tooth and help you fall asleep. The bite sized chocolate treats are a great choice for easy and accurate dosing that allows you to formulate the proper dosing based on your needs. \n\n\n### Snooze Bar by Swerve Confections\n\nThe Snooze Bar is an organic cookie bar filled with superfoods and high quality cannabis medication. Swerve confections uses coconut oil infused with cannabis to provide each bite of their Snooze Bar with a strong dose of indica hybrid cold-water hash. The Snooze bar is filled with other beneficial ingredients, like almonds, nutmeg, poppy seeds, and four Ayurvedic sleep herbs. \n\nAll of the ingredients that go into snooze bars are chosen with the goal of counteracting stress and encouraging restful sleep. Each cookie bar package contains 200 mg of THC and each “single-bite” cookie bar package contains 50 mg of THC. Make sure you read the package carefully in order to measure out the accurate dosage for yourself. \n\n### dosist Vape Pen - Sleep\n\ndosist has created a line of dose specific vape pens that are designed with particular medical conditions in mind. Their dose pens provide precise and consistent doses of cannabis that allow you to build the proper dose for yourself and be able to replicate it each time you use the product. \n\nTheir optimized temperature control, controlled airflow, and time control all help with consistent dosage throughout the use of the preloaded vape pen. We know ahead of time that a given product will work for a headache, for back-pain, for an upset stomach, or for sleep. This had not been the case in the medical cannabis arena, at least not until now. HMBLDT is out to change this. \r\n\r\nI recently met the folks from the HMBLDT team, and got to listen in on the many intricacies that went into making cannabis products that promise what they call ‘needs states’. While more and more concentrate makers are delivering their medicine in replaceable cartridges, the HMBLDT team explained that short of creating an all-in-one product, with no moving parts, they would not be able to stake claim to needs states (ie. Outcomes). For now, HMBLDT offers these four devices, promising BLISS, RELIEF, CALM and SLEEP.\r\n\r\nNeeds state-based packaging is a critical step forward for the cannabis industry, in particular for attracting new patients. To date, most cannabis flower or infused products have been modest at best in declaring what outcome their products may offer. Instead, we’ve witnessed a more generalist approach, where patients are highly dependent on the bud-tender to try to match products with symptoms and unfortunately not all bud tenders are well informed.\r\n\r\n### Why Accurate Dosing Matters\r\n\r\nHMBLDT has relied on the right combination of cannabis extracts and technology to deliver on their promises. For one, each of the four vaporizer pens come pre-loaded with very clear, beautiful looking cannabis oils - that you can clearly see through the device's gauge. In each, aside from the secret sauce they have invested significantly in developing, you will find a carefully implemented CDB-THC ratio. \r\n\r\nDose control is where HMBLDT introduces a unique solution. Until recently, dosing, as a means of optimizing one’s success with medical cannabis, has been woefully underused in cannabis packaging. In the edibles segment, for instance, we are finally starting to see more ‘micro-dosing’-- an approach that will invariably help both new and existing patients better manage their results. Dosing controlled products like HMBLT will help the general public to better understand that cannabis - like other medications - needs to be delivered on a dose basis in order to achieve desired (yes, rather than undesired) results. \r\n\r\nIn the case of the HMBLDT devices, the research team identified what they believe is the optimal single dose; the technology team added a feature that turns off the device once you have inhaled that dose. Even better, the device vibrates to tell you you’ve reached the per dose amount. This control mechanism is critical to delivering on the promised needs states - BLISS, RELIEF, CALM and SLEEP.\r\n\r\n### My Experience with HMBLDT\r\n\r\nI’ve tried three of them; BLISS, RELIEF, and CALM. I’m very curious to try SLEEP actually as I am one of those patients for whom THC actually stimulates rather than sedates me, mostly by creating a ‘busy-brain’ effect. SLEEP includes plenty of THC, but I’ve spoken to a few people already that used SLEEP with success, including members of our team here at HelloMD.  \r\n\r\nAs for the others, I’m sold. I’ve used many vaporizing devices and concentrates, in search of one that I could depend on regularly. I’ve found many that I really like, but in HMBLDT I have one that just feels dependable and consistent. And ironically, not withstanding my knowledge of and comfort with these devices, it’s the dose control that is making the biggest difference for me. \r\n\r\n### Vaping with CALM\r\n\r\nWhile this one is built of a CBD-THC ratio of 15:1, don’t be fooled. You can feel the THC. For me, CALM actually created a real sense of focus. In my life, this is a sense of calm, as it can be difficult for me to stay in one lane.\r\n\r\nHelloMD team member Ashlyn, also tried this pen and she has this to say about CALM:\r\n\r\n>\"The first pen that I tried was the Calm. It has a 15:1 ratio of CBD to THC, and only one inhalation was enough to ease the migraine that I could feel coming on. Because of the high-CBD content, I felt no psychoactive or sedating effects, just a mild sense of relaxation and easing of tension. This allowed me to function normally and alertly at work.\"\r\n\r\n### Vaping with RELIEF\r\n\r\nThis device’s concentrate is based on a CBD to THC ratio of 2:1, a ratio I usually prefer as I find the CBD mutes some of the undesirable results THC can produce (ie. Anxiety). Unfortunately, I am not one whose pain is subdued by THC; often the opposite actually. So I seek out solutions like RELIEF. One bonus for me with RELIEF, it helped me sleep soundly.\r\n\r\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5820cd89cd3edf000b8d8fce/embedded_images/5820ce00f1221300073dc671/Screen_Shot_2016-11-07_at_10.16.13_AM.png)\r\n\r\nMelissa, who heads up our Customer Service team, also tried this pen and she had this to say about RELIEF:\r\n>\"I came home feeling nauseous one evening and decided to try the RELIEF pen. I took my first draw pretty lightly and it did not vibrate. The next time, I inhaled more deeply, and in a few seconds it did vibrate. It made me cough pretty hard though! After coughing, I started to feel a little less nauseous. I took 2 more doses and felt complete relief. I was no longer nauseous. I was surprised, and happy it worked so well for my nausea.\"\r\n\r\n### Vaping with BLISS\r\n\r\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5820cd89cd3edf000b8d8fce/embedded_images/5820cd8bcd3edf000b8d8fcf/Screen_Shot_2016-11-07_at_10.38.37_AM.png)\r\n\r\nI just love the name. By itself, it makes feel good. And so did the device. BLISS in particular is where the dosing control made a difference. When using cannabis for more ‘blissful’ results, there is nothing I like less than over-consuming. HMBLDT solves that problem.\r\n\r\nNote that while the device is programmed to vibrate when you have reached the prescribed dose, I did not always get there. I know I don’t have a very strong inhale, so this is likely the reason. Either way, at least I know that I am below the prescribed dose, and not over.\r\n\r\nMark, HelloMD's CEO tried out the BLISS pen and had this to say:\r\n\r\n>\"My experience with BLISS was very positive. I found that if you pull strongly it will make you cough, so I now prefer to take mini puffs. It made me feel happy and slightly enhanced, but not really high, which is great. It was a positive experience and I really enjoy the overall design of the pen as well.\"\r\n\r\n### Vaping with SLEEP\r\n\r\nI did not try the SLEEP pen, but two HelloMD team members, Ryan and Chris both enjoyed their experience. Ryan from our Customer Services team had this to say about the SLEEP pen:\r\n\r\n>\"The HMBLT Sleep vape pen has a very slick, almost surgical design and the packaging could have arrived from Apple’s cannabis division. Its convenient size slid right into my pocket and after work I almost forgot to take it for a test run. \r\n\r\n>I suffer from insomnia. Some nights I can’t fall asleep, though this is easily remedied with cannabis. Other nights I fall asleep, but wake up at 2 am, my brain immediately keeping my body awake. After using the HMBLDT SLEEP pen for about a week now, I can confidently say that it is my first line for early am insomnia. It's just that good. \r\n\r\n>I used to fumble around in the night, count the seconds to myself and watch the cloud of vapor to see if it was large or small. That was how I dosed myself. A small cloud, maybe, needed another puff, while a large cloud probably signaled that tomorrow may require an extra cup of coffee. The HMBLDT sleep pen fixes all of this with its fixed dosing.\" \r\n\r\nChris, who supports our Business Division, reviews many products for us and here is what he had to say about the SLEEP pen:\r\n\r\n>\"I was incredibly impressed with what was contained inside the Hmbldt sleep pen.  The oil had a fantastic taste, and the vapor was incredibly smooth.  I noticed a much cooler temperature of the vapor produced by the HMBLDT, a staggering difference to usual harsh vapor that I’ve come to expect from other vape pens.  \r\n\r\n>This makes it the perfect accessory for your nightstand if you have trouble sleeping like I do.  The easy and all around pleasant experience of consuming a couple of doses from the HMBLDT pen could easily replace your night time ritual.  After climbing into bed the other night I enjoyed 3 doses over about half an hour as I did some evening reading.  \r\n\r\n>Much to my surprise, I found myself nodding off before long; a task that typically requires a significant amount of THC to accomplish.  Not only did it help me fall asleep quicker than usual, I also slept soundly through the night, a rarity for me.\"\r\n  \r\n### Disruptive Pricing\r\n\r\nHere is the other area where HMBLDT is disruptive. The HMBLDT devices are each listed for $100 retail. And these are disposable, so every time you need to reload, you buy a new one entirely (the company is planning a recycling program, by the way). But at $100, HMBLDT is positioning itself as much as 40% above the incumbent providers. If nothing else, this will make it stand out and get people to understand this is something new. \r\n\r\nWhile we may see some downward pressure on this pricing as the market expands, there is clearly a market for products that work. If the SLEEP device truly, and dependably, helps people sleep -- they will pay $100. I also suspect this signals the beginning of a new segment of higher-priced cannabis products, as manufacturers look to separate themselves from the pack.\r\n\r\nOverall, HMBLDT has done the industry a big favor by coming to market with these four devices. And as the HMBLDT team is cut above when it comes to marketing expertise and budget, this device and its innovations will open eyes in the fast emerging health and wellness sector. The packaging alone screams wellness rather than cannabis. Let’s hope this inspires competition to deliver more of the same. For the moment though, HMBLDT is worth a try, particularly for those struggling to find what’s best for them and looking for safe solutions.\r\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3333333333333333,"src":"/static/ddeae396f871598ebcd75ed58bc7060d/14b42/73b4356f9ec86271db2f2499d57b3401.jpg","srcSet":"/static/ddeae396f871598ebcd75ed58bc7060d/f836f/73b4356f9ec86271db2f2499d57b3401.jpg 200w,\n/static/ddeae396f871598ebcd75ed58bc7060d/2244e/73b4356f9ec86271db2f2499d57b3401.jpg 400w,\n/static/ddeae396f871598ebcd75ed58bc7060d/14b42/73b4356f9ec86271db2f2499d57b3401.jpg 800w,\n/static/ddeae396f871598ebcd75ed58bc7060d/47498/73b4356f9ec86271db2f2499d57b3401.jpg 1200w,\n/static/ddeae396f871598ebcd75ed58bc7060d/54ac5/73b4356f9ec86271db2f2499d57b3401.jpg 1365w","srcWebp":"/static/ddeae396f871598ebcd75ed58bc7060d/58556/73b4356f9ec86271db2f2499d57b3401.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/ddeae396f871598ebcd75ed58bc7060d/61e93/73b4356f9ec86271db2f2499d57b3401.webp 200w,\n/static/ddeae396f871598ebcd75ed58bc7060d/1f5c5/73b4356f9ec86271db2f2499d57b3401.webp 400w,\n/static/ddeae396f871598ebcd75ed58bc7060d/58556/73b4356f9ec86271db2f2499d57b3401.webp 800w,\n/static/ddeae396f871598ebcd75ed58bc7060d/99238/73b4356f9ec86271db2f2499d57b3401.webp 1200w,\n/static/ddeae396f871598ebcd75ed58bc7060d/5e0b8/73b4356f9ec86271db2f2499d57b3401.webp 1365w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2132-markdown","title":"How I Stopped My Phantom Limb Pain","slug":"how-i-stopped-my-phantom-limb-pain","content":"HelloMD spoke with Charles Rutherford of [Boveda](http://www.bovedainc.com/). Boveda leads the industry in humidity regulation technology and allows both producers and patients alike to preserve the quality of their cannabis products. Charles spoke to us about his personal journey with medical marijuana and his experience using cannabis to ease his nerve and phantom limb pain after losing his foot in a terrible motorcycle accident. \n\n### Do you use cannabis as a medicine?\n\nYes, but I never had fun with cannabis recreationally in my life, it wasn’t really for me.  Three years ago  I got hit by a careless driver on my motorcycle, and this resulted in the amputation of my left foot. Phantom limb pain and nerve pain have become a constant and painful problem for me. Yet, the doctors only means for me to deal with this pain was to give me more and more opiates. \n\nOpioid abuse is not a road I wanted to go down. I live in Minnesota and we have a medical marijuana program, so I was able to try marijuana for my phantom limb pain. Because of cannabis I was able to stop using opioids because I could use marijuana for both the pain relief and it allows me to sleep at the end of the day. \n\nThe funny thing is, that even though we were operating our business within the cannabis industry, I was very skeptical about patients using cannabis as medicine. It was only due to my own desperation to stop my own pain that I eventually tried cannabis. It has been amazing what it has done for me. I went from being a skeptic to a believer overnight.\n\n### How did this influence you?\n\nMy personal story, and how cannabis helped me with phantom limb pain, informs everything we do at Boveda in relation to cannabis. I have a personal passion for medicinal cannabis and how it can help others. Through marijuana we can alleviate the huge epidemic of opioid addiction and death, so I have made it my own personal crusade to make sure that the flower stays in the best position it can be for people who do use it as a medicine.\n\nI also work to help expand the knowledge and understanding of the industry. At Boveda we have commissioned a lot of testing so we can see what exactly is happening to the cannabis flower at different stages of storage and what is really the maximum storage time it can have. We are also looking to see if there is a best objective curing method and a best objective storing container, and since my story informs all of that, I would say that 95% of my attention is on cannabis. \n\nWhat I have discovered is that people around me who were skeptical about cannabis and had a certain idea of what a 'cannabis user' looked like has completely changed. I am a competitive athlete, I still compete in skiing, golf, and mountain biking, I’m a professional, and I don't 'look' like a cannabis user. \n\nIn my circle of influence that has definitely reverberated. People who have had certain feelings about cannabis and about what 'those people' (who use cannabis)' look like or do, know that I am not any of those things. Since I don't have a fear of sharing my story and I am not involved with a lot of things that the stereotypical marijuana user is, it is good at helping convert people to the idea that cannabis is a medicine and it can be used safely and effectively. \n\n### What about cannabis in Minnesota?\n\nIn Minnesota, we haven't seen a lot of people go towards cannabis. I think there's only maybe 1,100 people who are patients here in Minnesota. Because of some of the restrictions on what qualifies for medical marijuana, as well as restrictions on growing and administration methods, it has put it out of reach for a lot of people. I’m not sure if this kind of program will ever survive here, because of how it was put into place, which is a real shame.\n\n### What do you think about recreational use of cannabis?\n\nThe reality is, I come from a spot with personal beliefs of personal responsibility. I think people are being hurt by the status quo, so I think we shouldn’t be asking if we should legalize medical marijuana, but rather, are people getting hurt by the status quo? \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5818cc787d130e000740091d/embedded_images/5818cc7b7d130e000740091e/Screen_Shot_2016-11-01_at_9.56.53_AM.png)\nCharles and I recently met at the cannabis conference New West in SF.\n \nAre we okay with people getting addicted to opioids? Are we okay with making the cheaper and logical leap after opioids, something that can kill people even faster, like heroine? Are we okay with people getting a medication that can kill them right from their doctor? \n\nSo, there is clearly a paradox in the status quo. The safest option for people medically is something that isn't prescribed to them by a doctor, meaning marijuana. Yet the thing that can kill them, opioids, is what their doctor is handing out to them. I think people should have the ability to responsibly decide what they put inside their body and clearly cannabis is a safe and effective medicine. \n\n### How do we sway the negative stereotype of cannabis?\n\nPeople need to tell their story of how marijuana has helped them. I encourage friends who have family members who are against medical or recreational marijuana to tell my story. I am a conservative, Republican, Christian who has volunteered at church every Sunday for the last six years. I am an NRA member, I carry a gun, I am a competitive athlete, and I am a professional. Those qualities don’t normally fit into what people see as a typical cannabis user, which is why my story, in addition to being a medical case, is a political case as well. \n\nThis is also what a cannabis user can look like. Marijuana legalization, however, does not have to be a political issue, because being a conservative I believe in personal responsibility. So once again, using cannabis responsibly is exactly what I believe in. Stories of people who don’t normally fit into the cannabis mold and show people that a cannabis user can be anyone are important. Peoples’ perceptions or prejudices may keep them from listening to certain people, so finding the right messenger to get the message to certain people is crucial.\n\n### Anything else you would like to add about Boveda?\n\nOur product is unique and uniquely valuable. Boveda is being used by some big brands because they understand that it is the right thing to do for safety and quality of their cannabis. For personal use at home, we recently just released our 58% humidity formula for people who wanted a slightly lower humidity for their cannabis flowers. You just pop a Boveda pack in with your flowers and it adds or removes moisture as needed, then locks into the moisture that is encrypted into the Boveda pack.\n\nOur Twitter and Instagram are both @bovedainc and our [Boveda](http://www.bovedainc.com/) website.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3333333333333333,"src":"/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/14b42/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.jpg","srcSet":"/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/f836f/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.jpg 200w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/2244e/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.jpg 400w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/14b42/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.jpg 800w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/47498/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.jpg 1200w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/54ac5/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.jpg 1365w","srcWebp":"/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/58556/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/61e93/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.webp 200w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/1f5c5/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.webp 400w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/58556/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.webp 800w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/99238/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.webp 1200w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/5e0b8/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.webp 1365w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":24,"numPages":5,"currentPage":3,"id":5389,"name":"Insomnia","slug":"insomnia","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
