You can turn a bad day right around with some cannabis, fun activities, good TV shows and healthy snacks. Our staff at HelloMD shared a few of their favorite marijuana strains they turn to when they’re feeling down or frazzled.\n\n### 1. Pineapple Express: An Uplifting Sativa-Dominant Marijuana Strain \n\n![Pineapple Express cannabis strain](https://hellomd-gcs-production.imgix.net/orphan/markdown-image-injector/ownerId/image/aa63d1fc-d62e-471a-894c-e36153f98ce3?auto=format&dpr=0.8999999761581421)\n\n**[Danielle L.](https://www.hellomd.com/people/59c02607064564000f877688/danielle-lim), senior health & wellness writer:** “If I’ve had a bad day, my go-to strain is [Pineapple Express](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cd070d520d60009f4f4ad/pineapple-express). It's a sativa-dominant hybrid, but it's not too racy and is easy to find at dispensaries. If you can’t find this particular strain, you can also look for landrace strains of Hawaiian lineage, like Pineapple Upside-Down Cake. Sometimes sativas are too strong, triggering and causing stress and even raising my heart rate.”\n\nA few daily stressors can add up, so it’s important to have a relaxing routine to decompress. Here’s what works for Danielle:\n\n“Public transit and work usually cause me stress. When I consume cannabis for that, I just like to talk with my partner and vent, while watching something uplifting. I think that the upcoming election is going to make me want more cannabis in general.”\n\nIt’s also important to choose a healthy snack when consuming cannabis to deal with a bad day. A healthy diet can also impact your mood, and you don’t want the munchies to plunge you further into a negative headspace.\n\n“For snacks, I usually have some nori, because it’s low calorie,” says Danielle. “But if I’ve had a really bad day and there are chips in the house, they’re gone. Mangoes I hear can be really good. They contain a lot of [the terpene myrcene, which can boost your high](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5be271ec26ef630008f055c2/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-myrcene). Lamb’s Bread: A Fun Sativa Cannabis Strain for a Creative Boost\n\n![Lamb’s Bread cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-7368e5ac-81f8-4a4f-9711-560813918e8f/original.png)\n\n**[Sonya T.](https://www.hellomd.com/people/5c4f5d814dc2bc140a8a265d/Sonya), social media manager:** “In New York where I used to live, a bad day consists of getting to the train station and finding out it isn’t running. You have to find other sources of transportation, and there are a bunch of people in need of a cab who all want to go to the same destination. So, you end up getting there an hour late, and then have to explain why. After that, getting home and making dinner are added stressors.\n\n“For bad days, I like to roll up [Lamb’s Bread](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5b281cb0f5431d0008c41b20/lambs-bread) or [GSC](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce3c1d520d60009f4f4b6/gsc). To de-stress, Lamb’s Bread is my favorite, because you can still feel productive and get into a creative zone. I like sativas that let you coast, and people say Lamb’s Bread acts like a hybrid for them. It doesn’t make me hyper-aware like [Jack Herer](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cd5d1d520d60009f4f4b1/jack-herer) or [Green Crack](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cc89cd520d60009f4f4a8/green-crack), which trigger my anxiety.\n\n“The flavor of Lamb’s Bread is citrusy, similar to Pineapple Express. Depending on how much I smoke, I would consider it to be pretty mild. I like to take a couple of puffs, chill for a second, then maybe 20 to 30 minutes later, pick it up and get into some creative stuff.\n\n“I always get into making music. I tried drawing for a minute with some comedic results—it was interesting. I make all sorts of music with the computer, sometimes it’s jazz or more like house.”\n\n### 3. Dutch Treat: A Social Indica-Leaning Hybrid Cannabis Strain From Amsterdam\n\n![dutch-treat-cannabis-strain](https://hellomd-gcs-production.imgix.net/orphan/markdown-image-injector/ownerId/image/d26ad544-b54d-4ee4-8b64-4dfa25e49308?auto=format&dpr=0.8999999761581421)\n\n**[Bart S.](https://www.hellomd.com/people/5817af1a97ed67000a00143c/BartSmart), customer service specialist:** Sometimes if I’m hanging out with my friends, they’ll make jokes about my problems. With cannabis that can be a good thing, to help me see how I can use humor to change my perspective. So, if I’m a little stressed and need a mood booster, I go for [Dutch Treat](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5ac2bd111bb06d000861414a/dutch-treat).\n\n“I like to follow my nose when I'm trying to find strains that appeal to me. If something smells good, especially if it's fruity or citrusy, it reminds me of vitamin C and that makes me feel upbeat. I don’t get the munchies with Dutch Treat, and it helps me engage in conversation.”\n\nThat fruity smell that Bart mentioned is thanks to [the terpene limonene](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/574dfd85aa9671000c00004b/limonene-the-uplifting-citrusy-terpene). Terpenes are present in the cannabis plant as well as other plants, fruits and vegetables. They’re oils that come from the plant’s resin glands and are responsible for the plant’s taste and smell. Limonene is known to:\n\n* Reduce stomach acid\n* Fight fungal infections\n* Lower inflammation\n\nLimonene has also been shown to lessen anxiety, so it’s no wonder Bart reaches for a citrus-smelling cannabis strain when he needs to de-stress. \n\nRELATED: [KNOW YOUR CANNABIS TERPENES: LIMONENE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a8e1261f24d1300077ccb5b/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-limonene)\n\nCannabis is also a social experience. Sharing cannabis and perspectives with people can be therapeutic and help you feel more content after a particularly stressful day.\n“If a group of strangers is smoking with me, I usually don’t talk about current events, which might be too heavy,” says Bart. “I also try to choose positive music that everyone can get into, maybe Sublime or classic rock like Jimi Hendrix.”\n\n“But if I’m alone after a particularly bad day, after consuming I like to watch TV. From Blue Dream and Sour Diesel to more obscure strains like Infinite Euphoria, there’s usually something to suit everyone.\n\nBut how did all of these cannabis strains come to be? The answer to that is landrace strains. You may have heard the term “landrace strain” in a story about cannabis genetics or from a breeder you know. If not, we’ll break it down for you here.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nSo, what are these strains? And why are they so highly prized by marijuana breeders and connoisseurs alike?\n\n### The Origins of Marijuana Landrace Strains\n\nTo understand landrace strains, you need to brush up on a little cannabis history. Most scientists agree that cannabis was domesticated in Central Asia around 8,000 BCE. From there, humans brought the plant with them during their migrations across the globe.\n\nIn each area that humans settled, they bred the plant for their specific needs such as for food, fiber and in some cases even psychoactivity. Over thousands of years, humans selectively bred cannabis plants, and each area developed plants that were specifically adapted to life in that region. \n\nToday, when people talk about landrace strains, they’re referring to these indigenous, genetically untouched varieties from various regions of the world. \n\n### Are Landrace Strains Going Through a Resurgence? \n\nIn the 1960s and 1970s, soldiers in the Pacific and travelers on the Hippie Trail—an overland route that began in Europe and wound its way through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India before ending in Nepal—brought cannabis seeds back to the West. \n\nThen, breeders in Europe and the U.S. began crossing these different seeds with each other, creating the parents of today’s modern-day cannabis strains. But in the process of this intermingling, many of the original landrace varieties that may have existed in the 1960s and 1970s were bred out of existence. \n\nThis doesn’t necessarily mean that these genetics are forever lost. There’s been talk of some cannabis breeders making their way back to these regions to seek out more cannabis seeds. \n\nConnoisseurs seek out landrace strains because they’re rare and are said to have unique effects that some modern marijuana strains don’t have. Some also find the high tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content of modern strains to be overwhelming.\n\nAdditionally, there tends to be a nostalgia factor for those who consumed these landrace strains back in the 1960s and 1970s. \n\nBreeders are interested in landrace strains because of their genetics. Over the course of millennia, nature has selected the best traits to enable these cannabis strains to survive in their respective climates. Breeders think there’s value in this natural selection that can’t be replicated. They believe there’s no substitute for thousands of years of evolution. \n\nRELATED: [INDICA & SATIVA: DO THESE CANNABIS LABELS MEAN ANYTHING?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5bb542ad28d6e8000971f899/indica-and-sativa-do-these-cannabis-labels-mean-anything)\n\n### A Few Popular Landrace Strains Are Still Around Today \n\nIf you happen to come across these rare landrace strains on dispensary shelves, they’re often referred to by their region of origin, though some do have their own unique strain names. Here are some of the more well-known cannabis landrace strains and their effects: \n\n* **[Afghani](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce5add520d60009f4f4bc/afghani):** Hailing from the Hindu Kush mountain range along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, Afghani is likely one of the oldest marijuana strains in existence. Its flowers are large, dense and covered in trichomes, making it a good candidate for hash production. Consumers looking for a heavy-bodied experience will enjoy this indica, which is parent to many staple strains in the cannabis world, such as Blueberry and Northern Lights. \n\n* **[Thai](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5b3159a89755250007f2afe9/thai):** Sometimes also called Thai Sticks, Thai landrace strains are known for their buzzy, cerebral effects, which are often compared to a cup of coffee. Those who are prone to anxiety when consuming cannabis may want to steer clear of this strain. Conversely, if you relish in strains that set your mind abuzz, give Thai a try—if you can find it.\n\n* **[Durban Poison](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cb16cd520d60009f4f4a3/durban-poison):** Named after the South African port city of Durban, this sativa strain was brought to the States in the 1970s by renowned cannabis breeder Ed Rosenthal. Durban Poison lacks physical effects—this isn’t the strain to take if you want to hang out on the couch or catch up on sleep. Instead, it will focus your thoughts, and is ideal for creative or social endeavors.\n\n* **[Lamb’s Bread](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5b281cb0f5431d0008c41b20/lambs-bread):** Lamb’s Bread, sometimes called Lamb’s Breath, is a landrace sativa from Jamaica that’s been around for decades. Said to have been a favorite of legendary musician Bob Marley, this cannabis strain is known for its clear-headed, uplifting high that’s ideal for daytime activities like exercising and running errands. It also imparts deep mental stimulation that can enhance creativity or help you get over mental barriers.\n\n* **[Acapulco Gold](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cc976d520d60009f4f4a9/acapulco-gold):** This cannabis strain is indigenous to the Acapulco region of Mexico. It had its heyday in the 1960s and became a pop culture icon, appearing in everything from “Saturday Night Live” sketches to Led Zeppelin albums. Acapulco Gold provides a cerebral high and a mellow body buzz that’s pleasant and manageable enough for both daytime and nighttime activities.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles.
