What is somewhat of a surprise is her attitude towards medical marijuana. During a CNN town hall meeting last June, Clinton said, “I don’t think we’ve done enough research yet. Although I think for people who are in extreme medical conditions and have anecdotal evidence that it works, there should be availability under appropriate circumstances. But I do think we need more research, because we don’t know how it interacts with other drugs. There’s a lot we don’t know.”\r\n\r\nYes Hillary, we all have questions about that statement. Such as how can research be done in the United States when marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug? What exactly does “extreme medical conditions” mean? Since people with insomnia, glaucoma, anorexia, nausea from chemotherapy, seizures, headaches, pain, arthritis, epilepsy and other conditions have been using medical marijuana for years, are these all “extreme” medical conditions?\r\n\r\nSurprisingly for someone noted to use polls to calibrate speeches and positions, Clinton is out of touch with public opinion with both legalization as well as medical marijuana. A Quinnipiac University survey conducted in March found a majority of voters support full legalization in Florida (55 percent), Ohio (52 percent), and Pennsylvania (51 percent) — all key states that a Clinton campaign may need to win the general election.\r\n\r\nMedical marijuana, meanwhile, has even greater backing from people of all ages and political parties. A 2010 Pew Research Center survey found 73 percent of American voters back medical marijuana, including 80 percent of Democrats. Support has presumably grown since 2010 — but even if it hadn’t, Clinton’s cautious medical marijuana stance would stand in sharp contrast with four in five Democrats.\r\n\r\nOf course all this can change by next November. We can only hope someone has the courage to make the legal changes that are needed to make medical marijuana more accessible. And the answer is……YES! But then how do we know it works for the many symptoms that it’s used for? Since marijuana is classifies as a Schedule l drug by the FDA (no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse) the research that has been performed in the United States has been very limited. In other parts of the world, however, where drug agencies are more enlightened, there are many more studies. All seem to indicate that medical marijuana helps for a vast variety of ailments such as chronic pain, migraines, arthritis, anorexia, glaucoma, insomnia and many more.\r\n\r\nSo what information do we have that these studies are real and that patients actually are getting better using medical marijuana? The latest study by the Survey Research Group of the Public Health Institute in Sacramento California in August 2014, showed that 92% of people interviewed reported that medical marijuana helped treat a serious illness. The most commonly reported conditions were chronic pain, arthritis, migraine and cancer.\r\n\r\nLegislation was introduced in March 2015 to reclassify medical marijuana as a Schedule ll drug and legalize state medical marijuana programs under federal law. Right now, medical marijuana is legal in 23 states and the District of Columbia. When this law passes it will lead to studies being performed in the United States leading to more use for various medical conditions.\r\n\r\nJust to give some perspective, some drugs that are listed as Schedule ll medications include Vicodin, cocaine, methamphetamine, Dilaudid, Demerol, OxyContin; all drugs that have caused countless overdoses and deaths. Previously against legalization, he has had a change of heart after seeing the positive impact marijuana can have on adults and children suffering from an array of diseases, including cancer, epilepsy, and PTSD.\r\n\r\nDr. Gupta is not the only voice from the medical establishment to come out in defense of marijuana. Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Vivek Murthy has pointed to data that shows how beneficial medical cannabis can be.\r\n\r\nAccording to the most recent Pew Research Center polls, 53% of Americans now favor legalization, with 77% supporting it for medicinal use. California was the first state to legalize medical marijuana in 1996. Surprising or not?\r\n\r\nSoon after, 18 other states followed in the green—err, the golden state’s footsteps. In no particular order, these are the other legal medical marijuana states: Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Montana, Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Hawaii.\r\n\r\nFor now, there are only four really marijuana-friendly states. By this, we mean that marijuana is legal in both medical and recreational forms in these places. These cannabis-welcoming states are: Colorado, Washington, Alaska and Oregon. The District of Columbia also allows both forms of marijuana. Not so fast—there is one limitation. In each of these areas, there are still maximum measurements set in place to limit how much cannabis someone can possess at any given time.\r\n\r\nThe good news for cannabis users everywhere?
