[Lupus is a complex autoimmune disorder](https://www.lupusresearch.org/understanding-lupus/what-is-lupus/about-lupus/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3cSWvqnQ4AIVAayWCh24UQ55EAAYASAAEgIEvfD_BwE)\nin which the immune system attacks healthy tissues and organs throughout the body. \n\nDoctors usually prescribe several different classes of prescription medications to try to treat the various types of lupus. But as these drugs can have serious side effects, a growing number of lupus patients are turning to cannabidiol (CBD) for relief of symptoms including:\n\n* Pain\n* Joint swelling\n* Fever\n* Inflammation\n\nNot much research has been conducted specifically on the applications of CBD for lupus. But studies reveal that CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory, pain reliever and neuroprotectant. \n\nThis abundant cannabis compound works on many different systems in the body to promote healing and maintain homeostasis, or balance, among the body’s many interconnected functions. For these reasons, CBD may be able to help relieve lupus symptoms and prevent flare-ups of the disease.\n\n### What Is Lupus?\n\nDisorders like lupus aren’t caused by an external source like a virus or bacteria; they’re a result of the immune system swinging into hyperdrive. In autoimmune diseases, the body’s immune system treats healthy organs and tissues as if they were foreign invaders. \n\nLupus occurs in several different forms. But in all of them, the immune system attacks and breaks down tissue, causing pain, inflammation and fever, among other symptoms. Lupus can affect just about anyone, even very young children, but most lupus sufferers are women of childbearing age. Of that group, about two-thirds are non-white women. \n\nThe different types of lupus include:\n\n* **Systematic lupus erythematosus (SLE):** This is the most common form of lupus. In SEL, the immune system attacks organs and tissues throughout the body.\n* **Discoid lupus erythematosus:** This type of lupus causes inflammation, rashes and sores on the skin, as well as extreme sensitivity to the sun.\n* **Drug-induced lupus:** Certain prescription medications cause this condition. Over 40 different drugs for conditions such as depression, heart arrhythmia and rheumatoid arthritis can trigger lupus symptoms in many people.\n* **Neonatal lupus erythematosus:** This affects infants born to women who have SLE.\n\nThe exact mechanisms that trigger lupus aren’t clearly understood, but several known factors besides prescription medications are associated with developing the condition, including: \n\n* Viruses\n* Infections\n* Environmental factors \n* Genetics\n\n### Lupus Has Many Symptoms\n\n[Lupus has a variety of symptoms](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/lupus/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20365790), depending on the parts of the body that the immune system attacks. The most typical symptoms for all types of lupus are:\n\n* Extreme fatigue\n* Pain\n* Swelling\n* Intermittent fevers\n* A distinctive rash that appears in a butterfly pattern across the nose and cheeks\n\nOther symptoms can include:\n\n* Inflammation of the lungs or heart \n* Problems with blood vessels and circulation\n\nIf lupus affects the central nervous system, it can cause depression, seizures, and memory and vision problems. Lupus can also cause serious outcomes such as heart attack, kidney failure and stroke.\n\n### How Do Lupus Suffers Treat Their Condition? \n\nLupus is a chronic condition that, at this point, has no real cure. Treatments for lupus are intended to manage symptoms and reduce flare-ups, and they include a variety of prescription drugs from several different classes, including:\n\n* **Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs):** Both over-the-counter medications like Aleve and Advil as well as stronger prescription drugs can relieve pain and inflammation.\n* **Opioid painkillers:** Powerful drugs like oxycontin can also be prescribed for lupus pain.\n* **Anti-malaria drugs:** Hydroxychloroquine, for example, can help reduce flare-ups and moderate immune system responses.\n* **Corticosteroids:** Prednisone is one corticosteroid that can reduce inflammation and suppress immune responses.\n* **Immunosuppressants** Drugs like methotrexate can reduce immune responses and allow tissues to heal.\n\nThese and other medications prescribed to treat the various types of lupus can have severe side effects that can include lung, kidney and liver damage. But because CBD affects the underlying systems that drive immune response, pain signaling and inflammation, it may be able to relieve a variety of lupus symptoms without these risks. \n\n### CBD Has Systemwide Effects That May Address Various Lupus Symptoms\n\nMany of the health benefits of cannabis derive from CBD, one of the most abundant compounds in the _Cannabis sativa_ plant. Unlike another famous cannabinoid, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD doesn’t cause people to feel high. But it does support the functioning of numerous systems and subsystems in the body. \n\nRelatively recent research has revealed the existence of a bodywide system of receptors called the endocannabinoid system (ECS) that responds to cannabinoids. Cannabinoids produced by the body, called endocannabinoids, and cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant, including CBD, activate the ECS receptors. \n\nResearchers are still studying the scope and functions of the ECS, but this system appears to play a major role in maintaining homeostasis, or keeping many of the body’s subsystems in balance.  \n\nCBD can activate receptors in the ECS, but it does much more. At least [some parts of the ECS are present in almost every type of cell in the body](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5686045/), and CBD can moderate the activity of processes that affect the functioning of many different types of cells. One of these is [T-cells, a kind of cell that’s responsible for immune system responses](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26772776/). This means CBD may be able to help regulate immune system functioning and reduce the hyperactivity that causes lupus symptoms.\n\nBecause the ECS is connected to nearly all cell types throughout the body, a number of studies show that CBD can have effects that may also help ease other kinds of lupus symptoms like:\n\n* Pain signaling\n* Neurological functioning\n* Brain processes involving mood, memory and cognition \n\nIn a recent survey by the Lupus Foundation, 65% of lupus sufferers cited pain as their most debilitating symptom. A number of studies have documented CBD’s ability to relieve pain by moderating pain signaling to the brain. CBD also has anti-inflammatory properties, so that it can relieve the swelling and other inflammation symptoms that go along with lupus.\n\nCBD has far-reaching effects on cells and processes throughout the body, including those that can trigger the symptoms of lupus. Lupus is caused by a hyperactive immune system that leads to chronic pain, swelling, and tissue damage. Lupus can also effect certain organs, such as kidneys. Some Lupus patients can even experience kidney failure due to abnormal deposits within the kidneys. Lupus often also effect the joints, skin and brain. There are multiple different versions of Lupus that each effect different parts of the body more severely. \r\n\r\nIt was discovered that Lupus symptoms can be caused by the use of over 400 prescription drugs. Many of these cases could be quelled by stopping the use of the culprit drug, but in other cases Lupus can continue to effect the patient. Often, even if the Lupus was not caused by the use of a prescription drug, many people effected with the disease can get caught in a cycle of prescription drug use due to their symptoms. Many of the prescriptions used to alleviate the symptoms of Lupus can have adverse effects, requiring the use of even more prescriptions. \r\n\r\nLupus, as with many autoimmune disorders, poses the issue of long term opioid use in order to treat chronic pain. Since Lupus cannot be cured, rather just treated into remission, it is possible for patients to need to use opioid prescriptions to quell their pain for much longer periods of time than they were designed to be used. After long term use of opioids, the effectiveness can decrease, causing the need for stronger analgesic medications down the line. \r\n\r\nCannabis has been found to be an effective pain reliever without the addictive qualities of opioids. Cannabis can also work with opioids in a synergistic way to reduce pain in patients. A [study](http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1038/clpt.2011.188/abstract) published in the journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics found that when twenty-one patients took twice daily opioids, in association with vaporizing cannabis at specific times throughout the days they were observed, that the patients’ chronic pain had greatly decreased. The patients found greater relief compared to when they were only using opioids and the addition of cannabis did not change the way the opioids interacted with the patients body, as measured by plasma opioid levels. This study suggests that opioids could be used in lower doses in association with cannabis for effective pain relief. \r\n\r\nCannabis also has anti-inflammatory properties that could greatly help reduce the swelling and tissue damage experience with Lupus. A 2010 [study](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2828614/) published in the Future of Medicinal Chemistry found that cannabis is crucial in immune function and could be extremely helpful in reducing inflammation. The study stated,“administration of endocannabinoids or use of inhibitors of enzymes that break down the endocannabinoids, led to immunosuppression and recovery from immune-mediated injury to organs such as the liver.” This study shows that cannabis could be effective in mitigating the harm that Lupus can cause to organs. Cannabis can also be helpful with skin conditions, and skin is often one of the most effected organs in patients with Lupus. Reality TV star and former model Yolanda Foster has publicly shared her battle with Lyme disease on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills tv show, garnering reactions ranging from theories of delusion to an outpouring of support. Avril Lavigne also shared her journey with Lyme disease with the public, expressing she was bedridden for months and thought she was near death. This May, fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger’s daughter, Allie, released a book describing her perilous journey with the disease, which even included being committed to a mental institution because of complications Lyme disease caused, even prior to her diagnosis. Yet behind all of the buzz and big names, there are many people who suffer from Lyme disease across the world and cannabis could be a helpful component in their journey towards getting healthy. \n\n### What Is Lyme Disease?\n\nLyme disease is the fastest growing infectious disease according to the Center for Disease Control. Roughly 329,000 new patients are diagnosed with [Lyme disease](http://www.bayarealyme.org/about-lyme/lyme-disease-facts-statistics/) in the United States each year, compared to only 50,000 new cases of HIV/AIDs. Lyme disease has been found in all 50 states and more than 65 countries in the world, making it a global issue. Lyme disease is controversial, the CDC claims that all cases of Lyme disease can be cured with a 30 day regime of antibiotics, but that track of treatment has left many sufferers with severe relapses in symptoms, especially if they went preliminarily undiagnosed for a long period of time. Since many patients do not find a tick on themselves, or the rash traditionally associated with Lyme disease, and the current mainstream tests miss up to 60% of cases, Lyme disease is often misdiagnosed as Multiple Sclerosis, chronic fatigue, lupus, or other similar conditions. \n\nSymptoms for Lyme disease can vary greatly based on the person affected. The tell-tale symptoms, however, include flu-like symptoms, migraines, joint pain, and neurological problems. Many patients also experience gastrointestinal problems, severe fatigue, and inflammation throughout the body. Lyme disease can be tricky to target if the bacteria has been in the patient a long time without recognition. Some patients end up needing months to years of IV antibiotics and a regime of herbal supplements to rebuild the bodies immune function. \n\n### How Can Cannabis Help?\n\nDr. Ernie Murakami of British Colombia’s Center for Lyme Research [believes](https://www.medicaljane.com/2015/05/22/doctor-believes-cannabidiol-paste-could-be-a-potential-cure-for-lyme-disease/) that CBD could greatly help Lyme patients. Dr. Murakami has found success while using CBD against live spirochetes, a type of bacteria, and believes it has potential for helping kill Lyme bacteria. After Dr. Murakami presented his findings in October of 2014, a university in the United States has picked up the research and is investigating into these ideas further. \n\nA new [book](https://www.lymedisease.org/book-review-cannabis-for-lyme-disease-and-related-conditions/) released in 2015 provided a wealth of knowledge, and anecdotal evidence, on how marijuana could help patients with Lyme disease. Shelley M. White wrote 'Cannabis for Lyme Disease and Related Conditions' after her battle with Lyme disease. White personally used cannabis during her treatment process and said that, “Cannabis oil greatly reduced the severity of my symptom picture and improved my quality of life while going through Lyme treatment,”. The book also includes first hand accounts of other Lyme patients who successfully used cannabis to help them during their treatment. \n\nMany Lyme disease sufferers may be able to find an improved quality of life during their treatment by using cannabis. Many of Lyme diseases’ primary symptoms can be aided by the use of cannabis. Many Lyme suffers experience severe chronic pain throughout their body, primarily in joints. Cannabis is known to reduce pain, working on the cannabinoid receptors in the body to reduce inflammation. Many Lyme patients also have problems with their digestion, either due to the Lyme disease itself or all of the antibiotics needed during the treatment process. Cannabis has long been used to help patients with gastrointestinal problems and can also stimulate appetite in patients who have trouble eating. It is believed that Lyme patients may also experience some problems similar to autoimmune diseases, where the body has trouble differentiating between the foreign invaders, in this case Lyme bacteria, and its own internal workings. It is [believed](http://www.honeycolony.com/article/%EF%BB%BF5-autoimmune-disorders-met-their-match/) that CBD can help improve the immune system, allowing the body to better recognize between foreign entities and itself. \n\nCannabis could be a useful support for patients getting treatment for Lyme disease. Though there are currently very few studies that look at the connection between Lyme disease and medical marijuana, the anecdotal evidence is very positive. Many of the individual symptoms of Lyme have also been successfully eased by cannabis. Assuming one can manage the ups and downs of product development, the next step is getting the product to market.  It can be a long journey. If you don’t have the right connections, especially in the cannabis industry, the journey gets longer. I’ve spoken with many women within the industry about the challenges of getting into a dispensary; it was one of the inspirations for Sava. What has the response been like?**\r\n\r\nYes!  I find that as excited I am to have them, they are equally excited to be showcased in a new environment.   I want to support them as much as possible, from periodically highlighting different shops to helping owners write blog pieces on their areas of expertise.   I’ve found that  everyone has a special story that lead them to enter this industry.  For example, team Strictly Topical , which makes Sweet Releaf - a trichome infused body butter.  The daughter in the mother-and-daughter team suffered a car accident which left her with severe chronic pain.  It’s a moving story  - and Sweet Releaf is amazing! There is still a stigma to overcome - and I’m happy to be part of dismantling it.  De-stigmatization is incredibly important as it helps connect patients with medicine that can help them.  Doing this work, I meet so many people.  The more I get out and talk with people, the more I’m amazed at how many people are turning to cannabis as a new, viable remedy for what ails them.  The same way I did.  \r\n\r\nI see my target market as women over 30 who have already explored alternative health and wellness options. They have likely tried medical cannabis - or maybe they’ve been thinking about it and they are ready to take the plunge.  These are women that want to continue to explore new alternatives to pain management, auto-immune challenges and dealing with PMS.  This is who we are here to help. A few years ago, I suffered a disabling injury that left me with systemic nerve damage.  I went from serving on a SF city commission, the board of a local animal rescue group and working as a program director & case manager in the field of fair housing to becoming completely disabled within a very short period of time.  The pain was unbearable and I lost my independence, becoming bed-bound for nearly a year.  My doctors gave me drugs and more drugs - some of which helped with the pain, but none of which had a healing effect.  And then came the side-effects. A\r\n2005 study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\r\nfound a prevalence of 161,000 individuals with diagnosable SLE and\r\nanother 322,000 with probable SLE. Cutaneous lupus is another common\r\nform of this illness. Its symptoms include swollen glands and a scaly\r\nred rash on the cheeks and bridge of the nose.\r\n\r\nIt is unclear why some people develop this condition, but there appears\r\nto be both a genetic and environmental component.
