A few decades ago, a typical cannabis flower had a THC content of about 4 percent, but today's commercial cannabis strains can contain 15 percent or more, with some products boasting THC levels of more than 30 percent. That's a considerable jump in potency from yesteryear! \n\n[Increasingly potent strains](https://www.mjfactcheck.org/potency#:~:text=WHAT%20WE%20KNOW%3A%20Marijuana%20potency,and%20up%20to%2090%25%20THC.) may delight advanced consumers, but they can also drive away many of today's cannabis newbies – a rapidly growing group of new consumers. Now, the cannabis industry is responding with naturally low-THC cannabis strains and products that support effects like productivity, wellness, and health.\n\n![Low THC products are now available](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_26_at_4_42_53_PM_646cb2525a.png)\n\n### THC: A Medicinal and Recreational Cannabinoid\n\nThe cannabis Sativa plant contains over a hundred distinct [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/the-10-cannabinoids-in-cannabis-you-should-know) and [terpenes](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-terpenes-pack-a-therapeutic-punch), all of which define the profile of a particular strain. \n\nScience is still discovering the properties of many cannabis compounds, but of them all, THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) is the most thoroughly studied for [its unique psychoactive effect](https://www.insider.com/what-is-thc)\n– the ability to create a sense of euphoria and relaxation, creating the famous \"high\".\n\n![Cannabis is now being bred to be low THC](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_26_at_4_44_01_PM_e08fb36aee.png)\n\nDelta-9 THC is the only cannabinoid with a molecular structure capable of producing its well-known psychoactive effects. That's because THC binds to the [CB1 endocannabinoid receptor in the brain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system), which triggers responses in the brain's pathways for pleasure, reward, and pain signaling. \n\nTHC is responsible for the recreational enjoyment of cannabis, but it can also have some potential health benefits. THC can help to boost focus and concentration, [relieve pain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-helps-reduce-chronic-pain) and reduce nausea caused by chemotherapy. \n\nSome research suggests it can also protect neural pathways in the brain after trauma or injury and [help to control seizures](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/epilepsy-relief-possible-through-medical-cannabis) in certain forms of epilepsy. \n\nTHC may also reduce muscle spasms in people with multiple sclerosis and other diseases of the central nervous system. In high amounts, though, THC can cause anxiety and paranoia, confusion, or a rapid heartbeat. \n\n### High or Low: Why THC Content Matters\n\nThe [THC content]( https://area52.com/how-much-thc-is-in-weed/)\nof a cannabis strain depends on many factors, including the THC levels of its parent strains and even the planting or harvesting time. Processing affects a product's content of THC and other compounds, too, and so does the size of a specific dose. These and other variables can make it hard to determine whether a particular strain or product is high or low in THC.\n\n![Low THC products have considerable benefits](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_26_at_4_45_41_PM_88c43b99e4.png)\n\nAs a rule, a strain or product is considered low THC when it is at 10 percent THC content or less. High-THC cannabis typically contains 20 to 30 percent, but very high THC products can include even more.\n\nBecause of the variation in strains and other factors, it's not always easy to determine [how much THC is in a typical joint](https://www.hellomd.com/questions-and-answers/how-many-milligrams-of-thc-are-in-a-typical-joint#:~:text=The%20average%20THC%20concentration%20in,bottom%20line%20is%2C%20a%20lot!), but it can range from as low as 4 percent to 20 percent or more. Cannabis edibles typically contain between 5 and 15 mg THC per serving, while tinctures can range between 2.5 mg and 20 mg or more per dose. \n\n### THC vs. CBD: A Balancing Act\nCannabis products that contain significant amounts of THC are the target of legislation that still considers cannabis a dangerous, addictive substance on par with heroin. But cannabis products derived from hemp contain negligible amounts of THC, at or below the federally established level of 0.3 percent. \n\n![Hemp is low in THC naturally](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_26_at_4_46_40_PM_cf51f35d0c.png)\n\nHemp products are high in CBD, or cannabidiol – a non-psychoactive cannabis compound with a long list of documented health benefits that include relief from pain, anxiety, and [insomnia](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/3-cbd-products-to-help-you-go-back-to-sleep). CBD oil and other products contain virtually no THC, so they're exempt from regulations on full-spectrum cannabis products and cannabis flower. Due to this, hemp may be sold nearly everywhere or even ordered online.\n\nCBD can also work alongside THC to blunt its psychoactive properties. Because CBD can inhibit the effects of THC on the brain's CB1 receptor, it can help to reduce the anxiety and paranoia that can come from taking in too much THC. High CBD, low THC products, or those that contain an equal measure of both, can offer the health benefits of THC without an intense high.\n\n### Why Go Low THC?\n\nAs the cannabis culture expands, people are discovering that THC can have benefits beyond that famous high – and lower amounts can work to boost mental and physical well-being without impairing normal functioning. At \"sub-perceptual\" levels, THC appears to increase mental clarity and focus, improve productivity and creativity, and even improve social skills. \n\n![Hello1-min (7).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_7_b010be192e.png)\n\n\nOne way to get those benefits is through [microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-the-big-new-trend) – taking very small amounts for benefits, including better focus and concentration, relief from anxiety, and improved overall well-being. \n\nWith microdosing, the [effects of THC](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-a-better-way-to-take-cannabis) are subtle and don't interfere with daily activities.\n\nLow-THC cannabis products can include tinctures, lozenges, and a variety of edibles such as candies, gummies, and beverages. But smokable cannabis flower and related products typically contain high levels of THC. \n\nVisionary cannabis companies such as Country are now producing cannabis strains specially bred for low THC content. Leading the way is [California-based Country Cannabis](https://www.countryranch.com/), which specializes in \"light\" cannabis flower products under its Good Neighbor label. Country is now being called the \"Bud Lite of Weed.\"\n\n![Country is a brand with low THC flower](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_26_at_4_51_03_PM_f58d96cf00.png)\n\nBy bucking the trend toward ever-higher THC strains, Country and similar companies are responding to a new and growing consumer base looking for a cannabis experience that enhances, rather than impairs, daily living.\n \n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). Anecdotal reports indicate that many consumers find that they have considerable benefits for mental and physical health. \n\nHere's what you need to know about microdosing psychedelics safely to enhance mental clarity, creativity, and more.\n\n### Psychedelics: From the Underground to the Mainstream\n\nIt isn't clear when people first began to use psychedelic plants and other substances to change their perceptions, but some evidence indicates that the practice is ancient. In modern times, psychedelic substances leaped into public awareness in the drug-fueled days of the 1960s, and they've remained a popular recreational option ever since.\n\n![Untitled15-min.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Untitled15_min_f950fb257f.png)\n\nNow, though, these substances are moving out of the psychedelic subculture, as [new studies reveal ](https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0211023) that consuming them at very low, or \"sub-perceptual\" amounts produce positive outcomes without psychoactive effects. \n\nThe modern microdosing trend has its roots in James Fadiman's 2011 book The Psychedelic Explorer'sExplorer's Guide: Safe, Therapeutic and Sacred Journeys. In it, Fadiman explored the concept of microdosing for healing and spiritual benefits.\n\nNow, researchers across the globe have begun to take a closer look at the effects of tiny doses of these mind-altering substances. And they've discovered that [microdosing at levels below psychoactivity](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-the-big-new-trend) can affect the Brain in many surprising and beneficial ways.\n\n### How Does Microdosing Work?\n\nAt high or \"standard\" doses, psychedelics alter consciousness in a multitude of ways. \n\n![Tab of LSD cut up into a microdose](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_07_at_1_03_12_PM_81f64861fd.png)\n\nFrom the euphoric high of THC-powered cannabis to the hallucinations and dissolving sense of self in LSD or mushroom trips, these substances can change the way people perceive the world and themselves. But that kind of experience can also interfere with daily living.\n\nMicrodosing psychedelics triggers activity in [key areas of the brain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/exploring-mind-bending-psychedelics-psilocybin-and-lsd) but at levels well below the amounts that typically trigger psychoactivity. The result boosts well-being for many users, including relief from anxiety and depression, enhanced creativity and focus, and improved relationships. Some users also say that microdosing can reduce migraine and relieve pain.\n\nBut microdosing also has its downsides. Not everyone can tolerate psychedelics, even in small doses. Microdosing these substances can cause visual disturbances, insomnia, digestive problems, and problems concentrating. Other side effects can include numbness and tingling in fingers and toes, anxiety, or depression.\n\n### Psychedelics Activate Pathways in the Brain\n\nLSD, cannabis, and psilocybin top the list of psychedelic substances used for microdosing, thanks to their ability to mimic substances naturally produced by the body.\n\n![Psychedelics alter pathways in the brain](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_07_at_1_04_06_PM_c2481d1139.png)\n\nLSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) is a long-lasting psychedelic that produces vivid hallucinations and other altered perceptions. It [binds to cell receptors in the brain](https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/protein-structure-reveals-how-lsd-affects-brain#:~:text=Lysergic%20acid%20diethylamide%2C%20or%20LSD,been%20cleared%20from%20the%20bloodstream) that respond to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps cells communicate. Serotonin has also been called the \"feel-good chemical\" for its ability to reduce anxiety and boost mood. LSD can also activate receptors related to sensory processing and cognition.\n\nPsilocybin is a chemical compound present in certain types of mushrooms. Like LSD, [psilocybin affects serotonin receptors in the brain](https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-athletes-way/201811/is-your-brain-microdoses-psilocybin). But along with boosting the flow of serotonin, \n\"magic mushrooms\" also appear to destabilize existing neural networks and even create new ones. That accounts for expanding consciousness and new ways of thinking that people experience when they use psilocybin.\n\n![Cannabis can be a great way to microdose](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_07_at_1_05_17_PM_153ae1727d.png)\n\nCannabis contains THC (delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol), which causes its famous \"high.\" THC [mimics the activity of anandamide](https://nida.nih.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/how-does-marijuana-produce-its-effects), a cannabinoid chemical similar to serotonin that's naturally produced by the body. THC binds to the same cannabinoid receptors in the brain, triggering activity on various pathways, including those related to mood, pleasure/reward, and cognition. \n\nResearchers believe that when they're taken in tiny sub-perceptual doses, these psychedelics stimulate activity in the brain's pathways for cognition, mood, and pleasure, opening new avenues for thinking and perceiving without causing impairment. Microdosing holds promise for treating diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimers and relieving the symptoms of PTSD and other mental health conditions.\n\n### How to Microdose Safely\n\nAlthough there's increasing evidence for the benefits of microdosing, it's important to do so safely. \n\nHere are a few [things to keep in mind]( https://microdosinginstitute.com/how-to/microdosing-protocols/).\n\n#### Be aware of legal issues\nCannabis is legal in many areas, so it's relatively easy to find cannabis products in varying strengths and forms. But LSD and psilocybin remain illegal in the US, with stiff penalties for possession of these and other psychedelic substances. In some counties and cities, such as Oakland, CA or Denver, CO, within the US, psychedelics are decriminalized, which means it is unlikely you will be prosecuted with small amounts within your personal possession.\n\n#### Seek out quality products from reputable sources\n\nChoose products produced without harmful additives or processing, and look for clear statements about a product's contents, origin and potency whenever possible.\n\n![Psilocybin ](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_07_at_1_08_04_PM_d35331777f.png)\n\n\n#### Keep in mind that psychedelics can vary considerably in form and content\nCannabis can be smoked, vaped, eaten, or consumed as a tincture, and these methods are not equally suitable for microdosing. Psilocybin mushrooms can contain varying amounts of psilocybin, and LSD may not be equally distributed on a tab of paper.\n\n#### Start with a low dose\nIt can take some time to find the best dose for your needs, so start with a low dose and adjust accordingly as you observe your reactions.\n\n#### Dose consistently\nTake steps to ensure that each dose contains the same amount of your chosen psychedelic. For LSD, where the chemical may not be evenly distributed, a method like volumetric dilution can keep doses consistent. For cannabis, low-dose edibles such as chocolates or capsules can make it easy to get the right dose every time. For psilocybin, use a standard measure for placing ground or powdered mushrooms into capsules.\n\n![Vaping cannabis](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2022_04_07_at_1_10_15_PM_0b7de5b0a1.png)\n\n#### Maintain a dosing protocol\n\nMicrodosing experts recommend starting with the lowest possible dose on a regular schedule, typically one out of three days. Keep a journal or log of your experiences and the doses you take to track your progress and determine whether you need to change the dose or frequency. Consider taking a break from your protocol every few weeks to avoid building up a tolerance to the substance.\n\n \n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\nIt'sIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). But in recent years, microdosing has gone mainstream in a very specific way – referring not to pharmaceutical trials but to the \n[practice](https://www.theverge.com/2017/4/24/15403644/microdosing-lsd-acid-productivity-benefits-brain-studies) of using sub-threshold amounts of psychedelics for better focus, a brighter mood, and more energy.\n\nPsychologist and psychedelic experimenter [James Fadiman](https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/gv5p5y/a-brief-history-of-microdosing) first introduced microdosing in the psychedelic sense to the popular imagination in 2011, when he released the results of data collected from a group of users who reported their experiences with taking very small amounts of LSD every fourth day for a month. Most respondents submitted positive stories about things like taking on new challenges at work, being more present in relationships, and getting more done in a day.\n\nSince then, the number of microdosers has steadily been growing, whether it be with cannabis or other forms of psychedelics. Micro dosers [range](http://www.esquire.com/lifestyle/money/a51756/lsd-microdosing/) from tech types in the fiercely competitive world of Silicon Valley startups to people of all kinds looking for ways to feel less depressed, more alert, and more productive. And while Fadiman’s research focused heavily on people who microdose LSD, the same process can be used for other kinds of psychedelic substances, such as[ psilocybin](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-psilocybin-psychedelics-101), the psychoactive compound in some types of mushrooms – and cannabis.\n\n![Hello3.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_de8707650f.png)\n\n### How Does Microdosing Work?\n\nMicrodosing dosages varies from person to person so it does require some trial and error. Most information on how much of a substance to take, how often, and in what form comes from anecdotal reports like Fadiman’s study and online communities and websites where people share insights from their own experimentation. The limited [research data](http://www.businessinsider.com/microdosing-lsd-effects-risks-science-2017-6) on this kind of microdosing is largely due to tight federal restrictions on the use of any of these kinds of substances for studies on their medical applications. \n\nAlong with heroin, [LSD](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-lsd-psychedelics-101), psilocybin and cannabis are classified as [Schedule I controlled](https://www.dea.gov/drug-information/drug-scheduling) substances by the US Drug Enforcement Administration, which calls them highly addictive and lacking in medical benefits. That means that not only are there no federal funds to support rigorous studies, but also that pharmaceutical grade versions of these substances are difficult to come by. That means specific information on microdosing typically comes from personal practice – and that advice may not be safe or reliable.\n\nStill, microdosing is widely practiced for reasons ranging from being more competitive at work to managing pain from a variety of chronic conditions. And while much of the recent publicity about microdosing has focused on the increasing popularity of using LSD this way, microdosing with cannabis may also turn out to be the best way to get some of its [key benefits](https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/the-health-effects-of-marijuana-from-recreational-and-medical-use-2016081910180), especially when THC is involved.\n\n![Hello1.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_63481b85e9.png)\n\n### Why Microdose Cannabis?\n\nMany drugs have very different effects – or even opposite – effects when taken in different amounts – a phenomenon known as the biphasic effect. For psychedelic substances, a “normal” or recreational dose could impair functioning for long periods of time or cause paranoia, excessive anxiety and distortions of reality. Cannabis falls into that category too, thanks to the presence of THC, the psychoactive ingredient that’s abundant in the leaves and buds of the cannabis plant.\n\nIt’s THC that keeps cannabis on the DEA’s Schedule I, and causes the struggle between the justice system and advocates for legalization. But THC is responsible for some of the most potent [health benefits](https://www.leafscience.com/) cannabis can offer. THC binds to the body’s own endocannabinoid receptors, and it can offer potent pain relief, ease the nausea and vomiting of chemotherapy patients, reduce anxiety and lower ocular pressure in glaucoma patients. \n\n![Hello5.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_81659d02fd.png)\n\n### Microdosing and the Biphasic Effect\n\nAt higher doses, the psychoactive effects of THC can interfere with its effectiveness, both because it produces that euphoric high favored by recreational users, and also because of the [biphasic effect](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/why-does-cannabis-make-you-feel-good). A microdose dosage with cannabis is typically between 2mg to 5mg, however some people may consider a microdose as much as 10mg of cannabis.\n\nThat effect explains why small doses of cannabis can be relaxing and even focusing, but in higher doses it can cause distressing emotions, anxiety and paranoia. In medical usage, some studies reveal that small amounts of THC can reduce pain, but patients taking larger amounts can actually experience more pain. \n\nTo reduce these effects, many cannabis preparations balance THC with the addition of CBD, another common compound that has no psychoactive properties at all. But \n[microdosing](http://www.salon.com/2017/04/29/microdosing-marijuana-what-doctors-say-is-the-best-way-to-consume_partner/) may solve the biphasic dilemma, and make it possible for users to get the full benefits of THC itself without the negative effects of recreational-strength doses.\n\nCannabis can be microdosed in just about any form, but experienced users point out that tinctures, drops and vaping usually work best, because it’s easier to control the precise amount being used. And it’s important to start very small, working gradually just to the point where beneficial effects can be felt, but no farther. \n\nMicrodosing can be effective for all kinds of cannabis uses – pain control, anxiety management, or just plain feeling calmer and more focused. This way of using cannabis and other psychedelic substances is still in its infancy, but both recent research and results reported by users seem to confirm that for good health, a little cannabis may go a very long way.\n\n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://hellomd.com/get-started). In today's legal weed market, knowing what's right for you can be overwhelming. Common questions are:\n\n- What kind of marijuana product should I purchase?\n- How much cannabis should I take?\n- Do I need to get high to receive the benefits from weed?\n- If I get high, how long will it last, and what will it feel like?\n\nMany people consume cannabis to help them with their health conditions. The most common conditions why people consume cannabis are **sleep**, **depression**/**anxiety**, and **chronic pain**. But, there is a myriad of other conditions and reasons why people seek cannabis. For some, it is the desire to unwind and relax and for others, it's for medical reasons, such as **neuropathy**, **migraines**, or to help with **symptoms of cancer**.\n\n![Hello4-min (18).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_18_bc9e66b987.png)\n\n### What Type of Product is Right for Me?\nThere are many different types of cannabis products available for purchase, and often it's confusing, if not expensive, trying to figure out which ones to try. Here is a list of common cannabis products you may run across in your local dispensary:\n\n- Smoking flower or \"bud\"\n- Vaping oil from a pen\n- Dabbing wax, resin, or shatter\n- Eating an edible\n- Consuming marijuana sublingually from a tincture, mint, or tablet\n- Applying a lotion, balm, or transdermal patch to your skin\n- Consuming a capsule or pill\n- Drinking a liquid, such as a cannabis \"mocktail\"\n\nInterestingly, how cannabis affects you is highly individual and also dependent on the method of consumption. Within each of us is a network of receptors that cannabis acts on to bring about its therapeutic effects. This network is called the [endocannabinoid system](https://hellomd.com/articles/what-is-endocannabinoid-tone-and-why-is-it-important) (ECS). Each person has a unique endocannabinoid system with which marijuana interacts. The ECS is largely responsible for whether we feel good when we get high from THC, the psychoactive component in cannabis, or if we feel a little paranoid or anxious.\n\nThe other aspect which affects how we feel after consuming cannabis is due to its [bioavailability](https://hellomd.com/articles/consumption-methods-affect-how-much-cannabis-you-absorb). The term **bioavailability** was coined in the pharmaceutical industry to describe the rate and speed at which a given drug is taken up by the body and has its desired effects. The [effectiveness of weed](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16237477) can vary greatly depending on how it’s consumed. So, getting the right amount of marijuana for the effect you’re looking for can be tricky.\n\n![Hello2-min (21).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_21_bbf30d514d.png)\n\n### Why Choose an Edible?\nChoosing the right product for you may take time. For many people, edibles are a safe, discreet, and effective source for cannabis consumption. For instance, when you [eat an edible](https://hellomd.com/articles/consuming-cannabis-edibles-to-improve-your-health), you don't need to worry about **anyone smelling cannabis**! For many people, being able to consume cannabis openly without others knowing, is important.\n\nAlthough it can take up to two hours before you feel the effects of a weed edible, people consume edibles [because they are long lasting](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55f5f22c3530340006b70000/the-differences-between-edibles-and-flowers). Edible effects tend to last for around six to eight hours, while the effects from inhaled methods tend to diminish after only two to three hours.\n\nFor medical marijuana patients, eating an edible, like a cookie, every four to six hours is much more palatable than vaping or smoking cannabis flower. Also, the onset of an edible is more gradual and tends to last longer than with other methods.\n\n\n\n### Low Dose THC Edibles\n\nTo avoid having a bad first experience with an edible, we always suggest taking a very small/low dose and working up until you feel comfortable. Start with a **[microdose of cannabis](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/microdosing)** edible, which is between 1.5 to 2 mg. Once you eat your edible, wait for two hours before consuming more. For some people, this is just the right amount to feel the positive effect. For other people, a dose of 5 to 10 mg may be appropriate. But remember, once you eat it, you can't take it back, so start slow and go low!\n\nBelow are some examples of some popular edible brands, which vary state by state. Unfortunately, what's available in California may not be available in New York and vice versa. \n\nWe have highlighted 2 different low-dose options which are perfect for the new to cannabis. If you seek a higher dosage, each brand listed has a wide array of products with varying amounts of THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids.\n\n![Screen Shot 2021-08-11 at 9.41.50 AM.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Screen_Shot_2021_08_11_at_9_41_50_AM_9b7a18e093.png)\n\n### Petra Mints - by Kiva\n\n[Kiva](https://www.kivaconfections.com/brand/petra), a beloved California edible brand, was one of the first to deliver a low-dose THC edible. The Petra Mint is a discreet, tasty mint that comes in a variety of flavors. Our favorite happens to be the original Morrocan Mint, but in THC-only there is also Pineapple, Tart Cherry, and Saigon Cinnamon. At 2.5mg of THC or less per serving, these little delights make it easy to find the right dosage. They also offer a CBD, CBN, and a 1:1 option of THC to CBD.\n\n![Hello1-min (20).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_20_f63069305e.png)\n\n### Ripple - by Stillwater\n\nYet, another way to go when consuming an edible is actually by drinking a beverage. Stillwater, a Colorado-based brand has a variety of products but has come up with a low-dose dissolvable powder to be poured into the drink of your choice. Our microdose favorite by [Ripple](https://stillwater.life/dosage-all/balanced/?_sft_products=dissolvables) is the balanced 1:1 THC to CBD flavorless powder which contains 5mg of THC and 5mg of CBD. Consuming CBD with THC tends to mellow out the psychoactive effect of THC. If you're new to cannabis, we suggest consuming half of the packet to start and waiting to see how you feel. Give the Gift of Microdosing: One-on-One Personal Coaching\n\n[Microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/microdosing) is all the rage for both cannabis and [psychedelics](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/psychedelics). It's the practice of consuming small amounts of a substance in a \"[sub-therapeutic, or sub-threshold](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-a-better-way-to-take-cannabis), amounts so low that they wouldn’t produce the whole-body effect of a full dose, but high enough that a cellular response could be observed.\"\n\nNumerous health benefits come from microdosing cannabis or psychedelics. These benefits vary based on the substance. For cannabis, microdosing may help with **chronic pain**, **anxiety**, and **sleep**. With psychedelics, people have anecdotally reported that it helps **alleviate depression** and **anxiety** and may increase the feeling of **focus** and **creativity**. But, if you're new to either, how do you get started? \n\n[We think a personal coach](https://www.bliss-theory.com/) is a good entry point and a safe way to explore unchartered territory.\n\nAt different times, Pamela Hadfield, co-founder of HelloMD, [transformed her physical and mental health](https://www.bliss-theory.com/blog/tales-of-a-suburban-mom-microdosing-cannabis-for-my-migraines-and-then-lsd-for-depression) microdosing cannabis and then psychedelics. For a while now, cannabis—and namely [tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc)—has been found to help uplift mood and ease depression.\n\nBut sometimes **too much THC** can lead to people feeling anxious, jittery, and even more down—not exactly the effects those suffering from depression are looking for in their medical marijuana. \n\nBut there’s a way to take cannabis to help relieve depression: **[microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/microdosing)**. And guess what? It’s backed by science.\n\n![Hello3.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_de8707650f.png)\n\n### [Microdosing 101](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/microdosing)\n\nMicrodosing is the practice of taking a minimal amount of some substance to achieve the effects you want. So, with cannabis, individuals may consume very small amounts of the plant throughout the day to feel happier or to [relieve pain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-a-workplace-solution-for-chronic-pain). \n\nBecause the doses are so low (most people start with 2–3 mg of THC per serving), microdosing allows folks to experience the [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabinoids-chemical-compounds-with-huge-therapeutic-potential) benefits without feeling high. \n\nMany people, including **HelloMD** co-founder [Pamela Hadfield](https://www.linkedin.com/in/pamela-hadfield-19a986), rely on microdosing to feel better while still being able to function. For Pamela, microdosing cannabis several times a day means she can be fully present for her three kids and help run a business without the debilitating [migraines](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/new-study-finds-cannabis-effective-in-treatment-for-migraines) that plagued her for decades. Since she started microdosing cannabis, she’s been migraine-free. \n\n![Hello1.png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_63481b85e9.png)\n\n### What Does the Science Say About Microdosing Marijuana?\n*You may be thinking: If some cannabis can help me, wouldn’t more cannabis help me more?*\n\nWell, you have to take into account something called the **biphasic effect**. This phenomenon is when [a substance provides benefits until the dose becomes too big](https://www.labroots.com/trending/cannabis-sciences/11870/biphasic-effect-cannabinoids-controls-dosing). At this point, people start experiencing the opposite of the intended effects. \n\nSo, for someone with depression, a little bit of cannabis may help them feel more positive and motivated with higher energy levels. But too much cannabis could result in:\n\n* Paranoia\n* Anxiety \n* Negative thoughts\n\nResearchers think a too-large dose of cannabis actually shuts off [cannabinoid receptors](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/beyond-the-cb1-and-cb2-cannabis-receptors-trpv1-and-gpr55). So, the receptors found throughout the body that are supposed to interact with cannabinoids like THC and cannabidiol (CBD) to bring relief aren’t available anymore. \n\nThere have also been some studies that seem to back up the effectiveness of smaller marijuana doses over larger ones. One study from 2013 looked at [low doses of vaporized cannabis to relieve neuropathic pain](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3566631/). Subjects were split into three groups: \n\n* One that consumed low doses of cannabis\n* Another that took medium doses of marijuana\n* A third group was given a placebo \n\nResearchers concluded that there was virtual **no difference** in pain relief between the low-dose and medium-dose groups. So, folks suffering from depression and who are worried about cannabis making their symptoms worse should keep in mind that they can feel better physically and mentally from just a small amount of marijuana. \n\n![Hello5-min (13).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_13_e337a89a80.png)\n\n### How to Microdose Cannabis for Depression\n\nWhen it comes to consuming cannabis for therapeutic purposes, the first step is to figure out exactly what you need it for. Depression can look different to different people, so your goal may be just to feel happier or more relaxed. Or it may be to have the motivation to perform certain tasks or to socialize outside of the home. Whatever it is for you, having a clear picture of your goal is a good first step. \n\nThen comes a little bit of experimentation. Since cannabis affects everyone differently, the [marijuana strains](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/) and delivery methods that make your friend feel good may not make you feel the same way. \n\nYou can ask friends, family members, and even customer service folks where you buy your cannabis products if they can recommend specific cannabis strains and consumption methods. But know that it’ll probably take a period of trial and error to find out what works best for you.\n\n![Hello1-min (19).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_19_7ffdcd5854.png)\n\n### Cannabis Strains You Can Microdose to Help With Depression\n\nIn general, THC seems to have antidepressant qualities. Yet, there are some data that suggest the opposite.\n\nOne study from 2018 reviewing self-reported data and published in the _Journal of Affective Disorders_ found that [cannabis low in THC and high in CBD seemed to reduce depression symptoms](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165032718303100), while patients reported that high-THC/high-CBD cannabis worked best against stress.\n\nStill, most folks suffering from depression report that it’s the THC that helps them the most. A number of cannabis strains rich in THC are available for you to try, including:\n\n* [OG Kush](https://hellomd.com/strains/og-kush), a cannabis strain that helps boost mood and relax the body \n* [Super Lemon Haze](https://hellomd.com/strains/super-lemon-haze), which has a high percentage of the [cannabis terpene limonene](https://hellomd.com/articles/know-your-cannabis-terpenes-limonene), also shown to produce uplifting effects \n\nIf you’re a bit nervous about trying high-THC strains, you can opt for a Sativa-dominant hybrid strain like:\n\n* [Blue Dream](https://hellomd.com/strains/blue-dream),\na well-balanced cannabis strain and a fan favorite that consumers say imparts a calm euphoric feeling \n* [Jillybean](https://hellomd.com/strains/jillybean), a hybrid marijuana strain with a moderate THC content that’s widely reported as having positive effects on mood\n\n![Hello1-min (11).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_11_c6f6ddbd47.png)\n\n### Delivery Methods to Consider When Microdosing Marijuana for Depression\n\nYou’ll also want to consider the way in which you consume your cannabis. If you’re not able to or don’t want to smoke, maybe **vaping** will work best for you. If you’d rather not inhale your cannabis, you may want to try a **tincture** or **edibles**if they’re available to you. \n\nThese options are easy to take, delicious, and come in small doses, making them a cinch to microdose. \n\nOnce you’ve decided on what you want to try, take a very small amount and wait to see how you feel. Make sure you understand the basics of the delivery method you’ve chosen. **Smoking** or **vaping** cannabis tends to impart effects almost immediately, so you’ll be able to tell pretty soon after consuming how the cannabis makes you feel.\n\nMeanwhile, **tinctures** when consumed sublingually (or under the tongue) take about 15–20 minutes to go into effect. This is because the cannabinoids enter the bloodstream via the porous mucus membranes in your mouth.\n\nAnd **edibles** take even longer—anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours—because your liver has to process them before the cannabinoids reach your bloodstream. That said, the effects from edibles and tinctures typically last longer than the effects from vaping or smoking cannabis do.\n\nYou may want to think about keeping a cannabis diary as you start to experiment with microdosing. It’s hard to always remember what you took, how long you waited before consuming another dose, and exactly how it made you feel in the moment. If you take notes on your experience, you’ll have an easier time making the necessary adjustments in the future. \n\nIt goes without saying that you should start with as low a dose as you feel comfortable with. Some people may even only need a milligram or two of THC to feel some benefits. If you’re going with a cannabis edible, you can always cut that gummy or chocolate in half or even into a smaller piece to consume the amount that you want.\n\n**One final tip**: Keep some [CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd) on hand as you experiment to find your ideal cannabis microdose. **CBD counteracts the effects of THC**, so if you find yourself in a situation where you’ve consumed more THC than you wanted to and are starting to feel anxious or paranoid, a dose of CBD can have you feeling calm and relaxed in a matter of minutes.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana) index of articles.\n\n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\n\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). And what better way to make sure your soiree stands out from the rest than with some cannabis microdoses. Offering your guests a small amount of [tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) as they arrive (or early on during the party) gives them the opportunity to experience cannabis without overwhelming them.\n\nFor some people, a small amount of marijuana relaxes them, while for others it brings out their talkative side. And for some wallflowers, a little bit of cannabis can help them truly enjoy a party anxiety-free. It’s just a fun, natural way for you to help your guests get in the mood to chat, connect and have fun.\n\n[Cannabis edibles](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/consuming-cannabis-edibles-to-improve-your-health) nowadays don’t mean a crumbly, earthy-tasting brownie that isn’t labeled with strain or dosage information. Modern-day marijuana edibles are delicious, crafted with top-shelf ingredients and precisely dosed. There’s also a whole category of marijuana edibles that contain only a few milligrams of THC per serving, perfect for serving at a party.\n\n![Hello6-min (9).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_9_6f2860857c.png)\n\nThese microdosed edibles are beautiful, too, so they’ll look inviting set out on a festive tray, which you can walk around your party. Offering cannabis edibles individually to your guests is probably the best way to present them, rather than just setting out a bowl of treats and letting people serve themselves. These edibles are so delicious, that people may not be able to stop themselves from eating just one, so it may be best for you to dole out these elevated treats.\n\nAs always, label your cannabis edibles and explain to people the advantages of **[microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/microdosing)** and how the treatment may affect them. And don’t forget to **keep them away from children and pets**.\n\nIf you’re serving alcohol at your party, keep in mind that alcohol can affect how people react to cannabis, even if they’re ingesting just a microdose. Anecdotally, people report feeling the effects of THC more when they’re drinking alcohol, and now there’s a science to back that up. One study showed that [alcohol causes more THC to be present in the bloodstream](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5ab87d79f24d1300077ccb9d/are-marijuana-infused-alcoholic-drinks-a-good-idea), so people feel the THC more when combining it with alcohol, as opposed to when they take THC on its own.\n\nHere are four of our favorite cannabis microdoses sure to bring holiday cheer to your party. \n\n![Hello1-min (21).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_21_b14be3146c.png)\n\n### 1. Espresso Terra Bites From Kiva\n\nIf your party guests are into coffee, a great cannabis edible perfect for microdosing is the [Espresso Terra Bites from Kiva](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5748ac79a7ccb6000800007c/terra-bites-espresso). The company coats micro-roasted Tanzanian coffee beans with cannabis-infused dark chocolate to make these delectable and potent treats. There’s no hint of a marijuana taste, and the chocolate is rich and luscious, so people will definitely be tempted to eat more than one.\n\nThere’s 5mg of THC in each terra bite, and Kiva uses a 24-hour panning technique to make sure every espresso bean has exactly the right amount of cannabis on it. So, with these bites, you can be sure you’re getting a precise dose each time. Since there’s 5 mg per espresso bean, it’s a good idea to tell guests to start with just one and wait at least an hour before going back for more. These sophisticated and delicious marijuana edible will help your guests feel calm, loose, and ready to have fun.\n\n![Hello3-min (17).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_17_c60e81feeb.png)\n\n### 2. Plus Sour Watermelon Gummies\n\nIf you think a fruity gummy marijuana edible would fit in better at your shindig, pick up a few tins of [Sour Watermelon Sativa Gummies from Plus](https://www.hellomd.com/products/58ed3ceec064b40d58fad313/sour-watermelon-sativa-gummies). These flavorful gummies are low-calorie, gluten-free, and made with natural, kosher ingredients. They’ve got a sweet and fruity flavor profile and aroma that’s a definite crowd-pleaser.\n\nEach gummy has 5mg THC, though they’re easier to split in half than some other kinds of cannabis edibles. So, if a guest is a little wary of eating a whole gummy, there’s no problem offering them half of one instead.\n\nPeople report that these Sour Watermelon gummies are great for relaxation and easing stress and [anxiety](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-for-anxiety-and-stress-disorders). So, if any of your guests are feeling nervous about being in a crowd or anxious because they don’t know many people at your party, a sour watermelon gummy will have them ready to mingle in no time.\n\n![Hello4-min (19).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_19_657bcee0ad.png)\n\n### 3. The Surfer Cookie From Venice Cookie Company\n\nFor a cannabis edible that’s a little bigger and stronger than other options are, you can’t go wrong with [Venice Cookie Company’s The Surfer cookie](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5bb3c7e97fa3281f4e85f4f0/the-surfer). Each scrumptious peanut butter cookie also contains coconut and white chocolate chips—a healthy way to indulge just a bit this holiday season.\n\nEach Surfer cookie contains 10 mg THC, so it’s the most potent marijuana edible on the list. But cookies are easy to split in half or quarters, so you can accommodate your guests’ tolerance levels and desired effects.\n\nPeople who’ve tried The Surfer from Venice Cookie Company say that the cookie helps ease anxiety and [pain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/studies-support-cannabis-as-an-effective-painkiller). Many folks agree that it’s a potent edible. So if you’ve got any cannabis newbies on your guest list, definitely suggest only starting with a small piece of the cookie, then waiting at least two hours before seeing if they want more. \n\n![Hello5-min (15).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_15_a328a65906.png)\n\n### 4. Level’s Elevate Tablinguals\n\nUnlike the rest of the list, these little tablets aren’t technically edibles—they’re sublinguals. [Level’s Elevate Tablinguals](https://www.hellomd.com/products/5abbf1c41bb06d000861404c/elevate-tablinguals) are designed to dissolve in the mouth, so you don’t chew or swallow them. This allows the membranes in your mouth to absorb the THC quicker than eating the [cannabinoid](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabinoids-chemical-compounds-with-huge-therapeutic-potential).\n\nEach tablingual contains 3mg THC, making it a perfect little dose to help people relax and uplift their mood. The tablinguals have a nice, clean peppermint taste. People report feeling the tablingual’s effects in about 5–15 minutes without any crash or groggy feeling after it wears off. \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-what-you-need-to-know-about-marijuana/) index of articles.\n\n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). Anxiety. Irritability. Sleeplessness. Brain fog. Sound familiar? \n\nThese are common symptoms of **[menopause](https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/menopause/)**, changes in women’s bodies that signal the end of our reproductive years. Menopause typically happens when we hit our early 50s, but is preceded by **perimenopause**. This natural transition can take five to seven years on average to complete and even longer for some women. Other women may experience early menopause for various reasons, including when they go undergo hysterectomies.\n\nI went into menopause relatively early, with a number of symptoms exacerbated by a late pregnancy at 41. I’ve [described before my postpartum symptoms](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-cannabis-helped-solve-my-menopause-induced-insomnia), which included intense night sweats where I was not only drenched in sweat each morning but covered in a rash. I would also wake up at 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. after struggling to get to sleep in the first place, so I was averaging four hours of sleep.\n\nThis [lack of sleep](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/having-trouble-sleeping-try-non-psychoactive-cbn) was devastating to my mental state. \n\n![Hello3-min (21).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_21_3d833653f4.png)\n\nMy period completely stopped by the time I was 48, and by then, I was in the throes of depression. For me, depression shows itself as extreme irritability and a total lack of ability to cope with life’s stressors. I felt like I was living a nightmare. \n\nHormone replacement therapy was off the table because of cancer in my family, breast and ovarian cancer in particular.\n\nCannabis changed everything—and I only needed a little bit to make a big difference. Literally, a few puffs on a vape pen at bedtime changed my life:\n\n* better sleep\n* reduction in pain\n* less stress and irritability\n\nWhy did it work so well for me?\n\nTo understand the connection between [cannabis and menopause](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/marijuana-relieves-symptoms-of-menopause), I spoke with Elizabeth Moriarty, who’s a clinical herbalist and formulator, and founder of Luminary Medicine Company. She first explains menopause this way:\n\n“Menopause is characterized by a **decline in estrogen production**. Many of the uncomfortable changes we experience are authored by the impact of the decline in estrogen on the choreography of biochemicals that affect mood and cognition.”\n\nSo less estrogen means more anxiety, irritability, and brain fog. \n\n![Hello2-min (25).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_25_f0fdecc748.png)\n\n### Getting Your Bliss Back After Menopause \n\nWhile scientists and doctors understand the chemical changes in women’s bodies as we age, the entire process can be confusing and frustrating. Elizabeth explains that all humans have an [endocannabinoid](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) that’s a neurotransmitter in our brains called anandamide. Scientists refer to [anandamide as our bliss molecule](https://hellomd.com/articles/eating-anandamide-the-bliss-molecule).\n\nIf our anandamide is deficient, we may experience stress-induced anxiety and irritability. And guess what? Declining estrogen disrupts the regulation of our anandamide. In short, the specific hormonal changes in women’s bodies that occur during menopause affect our bliss.\n\n![Hello4-min (23).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_23_489cb45ba1.png)\n\n### How Microdosing Marijuana Can Alleviate Menopause Symptoms\n\nSo how can [microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/microdosing) cannabis help you ease your way through menopause? A microdose is usually considered around 2.5 mg of [tetrahydrocannabinol](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) (THC), But this may vary depending on someone’s tolerance, metabolism, and size. \n\nMicrodosing THC along with the cannabinoid [cannabidiol (CBD)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd) can help with menopause symptoms in a number of ways:\n\n- **Cannabis alleviates stress and anxiety.** In higher doses, cannabis may cause anxiety or paranoia in some people. However, in lower doses, the plant can have a calming, relaxing effect. \n\n- **Marijuana promotes sleep.** Lack of sleep can affect stress levels and increase irritability throughout the day. A deeper, more restful sleep can fortify your ability to cope with daily stressors and hormonal changes.\n \n- **Marijuana alleviates brain fog.** While some of the brain fog that comes with menopause is directly related to hormone deficiencies, better sleep plus THC via a [Sativa strain of cannabis](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/indica-and-sativa-do-these-cannabis-labels-mean-anything) could help improve focus and clarity.\n \n- **Cannabis reduces inflammation and pain.** “Many painful conditions are known to become more pronounced during menopause,” says Elizabeth. “It may well be that we become less tolerant of pain when we find ourselves deficient in anandamide, which contributes to our overall sense of well-being.” \n \n- **The plant promotes a feeling of well-being.** According to Elizabeth, research shows that CBD inhibits the degradation of anandamide. In essence, CBD works to protect your bliss.\n\nIn other words, microdosing cannabis reduces unpleasant physical and mental symptoms of menopause while still allowing you to function throughout your day. \n\n![Hello5-min (18).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello5_min_18_516a6f1386.png)\n\n### How Marijuana Helped One Woman With Her Menopause Symptoms \n\nOne woman I spoke to, Veronica, was experiencing typical symptoms of menopause: \n\n* Hot flashes\n* Night sweats\n* Stress \n* Mood swings\n* Lack of sleep \n* Irregular sleep patterns\n\nVeronica finds both cannabis with THC and CBD to be helpful.\n\n“Cannabis completely aids with sleep, whether it’s getting back to sleep after waking up from night sweats or assisting with getting a regular sleep pattern by medicating at bedtime,” says Veronica, who says she uses cannabis daily for menopause. “[I put] 10 mg in my coffee in the morning, and depending on my pain in the morning, I will use cannabis flower or a CBD vape pen and more throughout the day depending on anxiety levels from the stress of menopause,” she explains.\n\nWhen Veronica’s experiencing mental stress associated with hot flashes and hormone irregularity, she ingests microdoses of cannabis throughout her day. Sometimes, if work, caregiving, hot flashes, and just life, in general, have her feeling extra stressed, she takes a break to consume cannabis and even meditate for 10 minutes to help reduce her stress.\n\nIf you’re looking for stress relief during menopause, Veronica recommends using a **tincture**/or **sublingual tab** or **spray** to help the cannabinoids assimilate quickly into your system. [The mucus membranes in your mouth carry these cannabis compounds into your system more efficiently](https://hellomd.com/articles/getting-the-most-out-of-using-sublingual-cannabis) than when you smoke or vape marijuana.\n\nSpecifically for mental focus, Veronica says she consumes CBD oil in the morning daily and vapes or smokes CBD-rich cannabis flower throughout the day.\n\n“A good thing about all of the new science and technology is that it makes it very easy to microdose your cannabis when you need to increase just a little bit,” she explains. For example, you can cut edibles into smaller pieces to start with lower doses. For more accuracy, tinctures let you control the number of drops, so you can calculate up or down as needed. \n\nIf you try microdosing THC, and you feel more psychoactivity than you’d like, take a CBD oil under the tongue. Pamela gave her take on the latest cannabis trends that she’s seen crop up over the past year or more.\n\nIntroduced by [David Downs](https://www.linkedin.com/in/davidrdowns), the new California bureau chief at [Leafly](https://www.leafly.com/), Pamela got rolling with some of the biggest trends such as cannabis going mainstream, what with politicians on both sides of the aisle identifying as pro-cannabis. And she shared personal stories along the way—including how her own decades-long pain as a migraine sufferer got her to see cannabis in a new light.\n\nFollowing are excerpts from her walk through the **top 10 emerging trends in cannabis**:\n\n![Hello1-min (31).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_31_9aec95fc52.png)\n\n### Trend #1: Cannabis Goes Mainstream\n\n“Some might say that cannabis has been mainstream for some time. I would argue that 2018 and 2019 are where we're going to see the tipping point in terms of the conversation around cannabis, the destigmatization of it … We have 30 medically legal states and Washington, D.C. And we have nine recreationally legal states. What this is doing is it's forcing the conversation across the country.\n\n“We also see that mainstream media is accepting cannabis. When we look at O magazine, and it does a large spread on cannabis, or we look at _Goop_, **Gwyneth Paltrow's** platform, and they're talking about cannabis so readily, it changes the conversation across the nation. … When you look at the _New York Times_, when you look at _Vogue_, when you look at _Forbes_ and their willingness to accept this and write about cannabis, that's going to change how we all accept it, because we're shaped by the media around us.”\n\n![Hello4-min (22).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_22_6ff20480bb.png)\n\n### Trend #2: Cannabis for Health & Wellness\n\n“Most people who come to HelloMD, I would qualify them either as having compromised health or as a lifestyle consumer. What's interesting is, if you start out as a lifestyle consumer, say somebody in their mid-30s who comes back to cannabis after not trying it since college, this lifestyle consumer maybe somebody who just wants to relax on a Friday night. That person will often cycle into using it more than for health and wellness concerns like insomnia or anxiety, and somebody like myself who wasn't truly medical but had compromised health would never have considered being a lifestyle consumer before.\n\n“But after cannabis solves some of my health issues, I now may consume it to feel a little bit better on a Friday night. If you end up taking some cannabis to decrease stress, that's for your health, that's for your own wellness. So people are starting to look at cannabis in a very different way—as a tool for wellness—and that's something I'm really excited about because I believe that this should be accessible to everyone for that reason.”\n\n![Hello6-min (7).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_7_74b6aad113.png)\n\n### Trend #3: Cannabis as the Exit Drug for the Opioid Epidemic\n\n“Seventy thousand people across North America are dying every year from opioid overdoses. HelloMD did one of the largest studies on chronic pain, cannabis, and opioids; 3,000 patients were surveyed about introducing cannabis into their treatment protocol. The fascinating thing was once they started to use cannabis, it actually increased the efficacy of the opioids, and they decreased their consumption. Ninety-seven percent of people indicated they decreased or eliminated use of opioids altogether. That's an amazing statistic.\n\n“And there's a lot of new research out there that's mimicking exactly what we found. The biggest hurdle I see in terms of the widespread adoption of cannabis as an exit drug to the opioid epidemic is not general consumers. It's the general practitioners who continue to not look at the research, to not accept cannabis as a valuable treatment. So I urge everyone in this room to talk to your doctor.”\n\n![Hello1-min (13).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_13_54fd85da01.png)\n\n### Trend #4: Big Pharma’s Move Into Cannabis\n\n“I see a lot of undercurrents of what's happening with Big Pharma in the cannabis industry. And my prediction is that within two to five years, assuming that federal law changes and cannabis goes out of Schedule 1 status, is that Big Pharma will swoop in. \n\n“The big pharmaceutical company that's betting on cannabis right now is GW Pharma, based in the U.K. The FDA just approved its antiseizure medication, Epidiolex. And I think the unique thing about that medication is that it’s actually using whole plants. The reason I mention that is because Big Pharma’s tendency is much more to go towards synthetic cannabinoids, developing synthetics out of barley, yeast, different things like that.”\n \n“Meanwhile, what’s feeding into Big Pharma is biotech companies that are creating these synthetic cannabinoids. For example, there's a company up in Canada that's been very successful at creating THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) out of, I believe it's a yeast. And so they’re going to be poised for acquisition by Big Pharma.”\n\n![Hello3-min (25).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_25_dbe4baa854.png)\n\n### Trend #5: One Size Does Not Fit All\n\n“When I walked into dispensaries about five years ago, what I noticed was that all of the products pretty much seemed the same. A lot of them would be almost entirely all flower and very, very high THC content. I would ask, ‘Do you have anything lower in THC? And they would actually laugh at me and say, ‘Nobody wants that.’ And I was like, ‘Well, I kind of need and want that.’ \n \n“Demand is now pushing innovation. We’re in a culture where we have one of the best product arrays available on the planet. We have incredibly innovative new products coming out all of the time, and a lot of them are lower in THC and high in CBD (cannabidiol), which is the non-psychoactive portion of the plant.”\n\n![Hello6-min (8).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_8_fe2e21717c.png)\n\n### Trend #6: Over-Regulation With Adult-Use Legalization in CA\n\n“I've heard from a lot of people who come from Canada and say, ‘We come down to California to look at your product selection. We come down to look and see what you guys are making.’ Since Prop 64 passed and since January 1, the cannabis industry has basically been decimated by overregulation. We went from having probably 1,500 dispensaries operating legally to about 300 in the state. We went from having over 1,000 brands to having just 150 or so compliant legal brands in the state today.\n\n“We also have what I think is the biggest travesty of overregulation, which is Californians were basically voting to have a legal system so that everyone could have access because that was the dream. That's what they were sold, but the reality is that 70% of the state right now is practically dry—70%.\n\n“Now, when you think about a patient, I think about myself. If I couldn't get access to medication, it would probably drive me to the black market. But when you look at all of these medical patients across California and patients who actually need access, they’re not given access because local municipalities have deemed it unsafe to have cannabis dispensaries or delivery within their jurisdiction.”\n\n![Hello4-min (24).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_24_8240521b5f.png)\n\n### Trend #7: Microdosing Cannabis\n\n“This has been on the rise for quite some time. Microdosing is the idea that you take the minimum amount of cannabis or any other substance to create the maximum overall beneficial effect. I like to compare microdosing to wine. If you drink a whole bottle of wine, most people won't feel very good. \n\n“Most people, when they start with cannabis, they have that macro-dose experience, and it scares them off of trying cannabis again. So, when you talk about microdosing and on-ramping people, this is like giving them that sort of half glass of wine, right? And just allowing them to try cannabis and try it safely and to titrate up.\n\n“So we're seeing an enormous amount of products by a variety of brands right now that offer very low-dose microdosed cannabis products.”\n\n![Hello2-min (31).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_31_35e907dddd.png)\n\n### Trend #8: Weight Management With Cannabis\n\n“The reality is cannabis consumers tend to have a lower BMI (body mass index) and a lower or a smaller waist size than non-cannabis consumers do. Now you could say that’s sort of negligible, but THC has many different components within it that actually changes your gut microbiome; it actually can help speed up your metabolism.\n\n“The other interesting thing is that CBD has been found in new research to also boost metabolism, but it will also convert white fat cells to brown fat cells. And brown fat cells actually burn energy.”\n\n![Hello1-min (19).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_19_7ffdcd5854.png)\n\n### Trend #9: Other Cannabinoids\n\n“There are now new cannabinoids—other than CBD and THC—that you can select on dispensary shelves and have delivered to your door. For example, CBG (cannabigerol), which promotes bone growth and is anti-spasmodic. And when you take the whole plant together, they have tremendous therapeutic value.”\n\n![Hello3-min (26).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_26_d232153610.png)\n\n### Trend #10: Terpenes\n\n“Terpenes are amazing. They’re part of the cannabis plant that creates that aromatic smell and have been shown to have incredible therapeutic value. Terpenes aren’t just in cannabis but are in many different plants.\n\n“You'll start to see people talking about terpenes in addition to cannabinoids when you buy products. A certain product will have linalool, and these are the effects. And this is the smell pinene, which is the smell of pine, and so on.”\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.\n\n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\n\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). This time, Chris spoke on the topic of [microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/microdosing) cannabis.\n\n![Hello1-min (29).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_29_a2323482f9.png)\n\nChris, who’s also Level’s chief scientist, holds a Ph.D. in small molecule chemistry. As he puts it, “*A lot of people who get that training go and make drugs for Big Pharma. … I’ve always been fascinated by plant medicine. And so I had an experience seven years ago on a cannabis farm that changed the direction of my life and led me down this path of wanting to create a consistent, reliable, standardized dose of products for the cannabis market*\".\n\n“*Level’s about three years old now, and I think we’re doing a good job of trying to achieve that goal. We’ll keep iterating, moving forward. And we love partnering with [HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/) on these events because we’re very aligned on how we approach our thoughts for what cannabis can be for people in health and wellness*.”\n\nWhen it comes to cannabis for health and wellness, more and more people are consuming the plant to improve their quality of life versus for recreational purposes only. Says Dr. Solomon, “*There are always going to be people who just want to get stoned, who just want to get high*.\"\n\n“*However, we try to promote cannabis as an alternative to pharmaceutical drugs—to alcohol in most cases, and obviously to opioids. We see people using cannabis for everything from [migraines](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/new-study-finds-cannabis-effective-in-treatment-for-migraines) to [insomnia](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/3-popular-questions-about-marijuana-and-insomnia-answered) and obviously, number one, for [pain](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-a-workplace-solution-for-chronic-pain)*.”\n\nAnd so, with this in mind, Dr. Solomon sat down with Chris to go over the benefits of cannabis, especially when taken in small doses on a regular basis—that is, [cannabis taken in microdoses](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-a-better-way-to-take-cannabis). Here are just a few excerpts from their in-depth discussion.\n\n### What is microdosing when it comes to cannabis? And how does microdosing marijuana affect the human condition?\n\n**Chris Emerson:** Microdosing is a concept of using a subtherapeutic dose over a certain timeframe to help some system come into equilibrium. A lot of times, when people talk about microdosing, that’s with psychedelic compounds. I think [James Fadiman](https://www.jamesfadiman.com/) was the one who really came up with this regime of: \n\nYou take a compound for one day at a subtherapeutic dose. Then you take two days off. Then you repeat that cycle. So, in seven days, you’re dosing three times roughly. This works really well when you’re talking about very potent compounds where you need less than a milligram to have some physiological action.\n\nIn cannabis, microdosing is now used ubiquitously to talk about much lower dosing. So, instead of packing maybe a bowl full of flower using a vape cartridge, it’s using 1–3 milligrams of a subtherapeutic dose of cannabis. And so, I think it’s important to define what we’re talking about from microdosing. Generally, the range that people talk about with microdosing is anything up to three milligrams or more. \n\n![Hello3-min (25).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_25_dbe4baa854.png)\n\n### The problem, though, with cannabis, in general, is that everyone’s needs are individual and unique. So what may be right for me may not be right for you? Isn’t that right?\n\n**Chris Emerson:** Exactly. So I think the extreme cut-off is five milligrams, but that can be a very heavy dose for a lot of people. So we at Level and a lot of other companies define it as being from 1–3 milligrams. \n\nHonestly, it’s really hard to get microdosed products that are less than a milligram. So I think in the context of cannabis, when we talk about microdosing, it’s somewhere between 1–3 milligrams, potentially up to five. \n\n![Hello4-min (24).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_24_8240521b5f.png)\n\n### How does a microdose actually work? Are you supposed to feel something when you take a microdose of cannabis?\n\n**Chris Emerson:** I think in the traditional context of microdosing cannabis, it’s working in the background, so you don’t necessarily feel it physiologically, but you notice enhancement. Then, it’s like, “*Oh, I can focus now*,” or “*I’m not getting tired*,” or “*I didn’t have anxiety today*.” And because the plant produces 65-plus different [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabinoids-chemical-compounds-with-huge-therapeutic-potential), some of them are psychoactive, and most of them aren’t.\n\nAnd so it’s an interesting question you ask. Yeah, maybe you take a milligram of [THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc), and you don’t feel this high from a physiological standpoint, but it helps you focus during your day or helps with your back pain if you’ve been sitting at a computer for 10 hours.\n\nAnd so the really challenging thing, and I think what we’re trying to do here, is to answer: What is microdosing, and what does it mean for cannabis?\n\n![Hello2-min (26).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_26_b45b29ac52.png)\n \n### If someone takes a high dose of THC, they feel it immediately. In a microdose, though, they don’t really feel anything, so they don’t think it’s working. Do you have to take cannabis for a certain amount of time in the microdosed amount before you actually realize that something may be happening? Or might they feel something?\n\n**Chris Emerson:** I definitely think they could feel something. I can take small doses of cannabis. Not necessarily delta-9 THC, but maybe [CBD (cannabidiol)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd) as an example. I can take 1–3 milligrams. I may not feel physiologically in effect; I don’t feel tingling, or maybe I don’t feel tension relief in my shoulders, but mentally and emotionally, there’s a difference. So because everyone interacts differently with cannabis, it’s part of this journey of what cannabis actually is: an exploration and definition. \n\n![Hello1-min (25).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_25_08bb84ad6d.png)\n\n### Are there other cannabinoids that you can microdose as well? In other words, other than CBD and THC?\n\n**Chris Emerson:** Yes, absolutely. Any of them, as long as you can find products that allow you to do that. So whether it's a tea or a tincture or tablets or powder, you need something that's standardized in dosage. \n\n![Hello4-min (23).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_23_489cb45ba1.png)\n\n### If someone were to have pain and they needed to take a lot of THC to quell that pain, would they be able to microdose and still get the type of relief they need over a period of time? \n\n**Chris Emerson:** Potentially, they could. It's really hard to say because right now, the way I view it is most people are really overdosing on the amount of cannabis we need. Most products are these much higher-dose products.\n\nAnd so people really haven't started to explore how much cannabis do, I actually need and what is my dosing regime over a certain given amount of time. And so, it makes it challenging because there are a lot of different factors that play into how effective the cannabis is or will be.\n\nThe fat you’ve consumed makes a difference. Also, what's my route of administration? What's my metabolism like? How long does it take my body to actually metabolize and get rid of the active cannabinoid plus, am I using cannabinoids in concert?\n\nAnd so, it makes it really challenging. It's not a cut-and-dried, zero-one. This is the way we do it. This is why we keep coming back to, you start low and go slow. You start with 1–3 milligrams, and then you can baseline yourself essentially off of a product and then say, “OK, I understand if I take three milligrams, I feel this way.”\n\nAnd then you can really start to explore yourself. Maybe you introduce other cannabinoids, or you try a smaller dose to see if you get the same effect. \n\n![Hello6-min (6).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_6_6f0daaad5e.png)\n\n### Let's say there's someone who's been using high doses of THC and CBD. What will happen if they switch immediately to a microdose? Will they feel anything, or do they have to wash the high doses of cannabis out of their system and then start slowly going to a microdose to get some type of effect or feeling?\n\n**Chris Emerson:** There’s a lot of empirical evidence out there, and what people like to say is it's seven to 10 days for your body to reset. … So, say you're on a regimen of 100 milligrams of THC a day, but you really want to see if five milligrams two times a day is going to make a difference. You need a wash-out period.\n\nMost likely, seven to 10 days is what a lot of people report will clear your system. Maybe it's longer—up to 30 days, but that's a good place to start. Then bring yourself back online and say, “Hey, I'm going to try with five milligrams in the morning and five at night.”\n\nThe other thing as well is that people react differently to cannabinoids because we have different expression levels of endocannabinoids in our bodies, so maybe it's not just the delta-9 THCs. Maybe it's the interaction with the other cannabinoids as well. So as you lower the dose of something, maybe you want to start over again and try some new cannabinoids, try some CBD in different ratios with the THC.\n\nLowering your dose is one of the challenging things that we talk about to a lot of people. This is a journey. This is a journey with a plant that people have been consuming for at least 10,000 years, probably a lot longer, and there's going be some exploration with it.\n\nBut cannabis—if formulated properly and tested properly—should be a really good experience, and the adverse effects that people may or may not have should be minimal. Maybe you get a little too high one time, so you go to sleep. Maybe you get a little paranoid, and you wake up the next day and say, “I'm cool; I'm fine, and now I know not to do that again.”\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.\n\n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\n\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). Even with legalization gaining traction across the U.S. and the multitude of cannabis brands and consumption options available, folks new to cannabis still struggle with finding how much cannabis—and what kind—is appropriate for them.\n\nFor now, the best we can tell cannabis consumers in their quest to find the perfect dose is to “**start low and go slow**.” Cannabis businesses and entrepreneurs are stepping up to the plate and giving consumers a wide array of options to solve their problems around figuring out the right amount when dosing. \n\nThe first attempt at a solution was the rise of [microdosed](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/microdosing) cannabis products. Now, some businesses and organizations are adding science and technology to the mix in hopes of improving dosing accuracy. \n\nOther companies are helping consumers figure out not just how much cannabis they require but also what type of cannabis products best suits their needs. From the tailored consumer highs touted by companies like [Canopy Growth](https://www.canopygrowth.com/) and [AbsoluteXtracts](https://www.abx.org/) to the “layered” effects of [Level Blends](https://levelexperience.com/), consumers now have a few ways to tackle the cannabis dosing problem. \n\n![Hello2-min (26).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_26_b45b29ac52.png)\n\n### 1. Microdosing—It Isn’t Just for Cannabis Edibles & Tinctures \n\nMicrodosing was first associated with **[psychedelics](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/psychedelics)** like lysergic acid diethylamide ([LSD](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-lsd-psychedelics-101)) and [psilocybin](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-is-psilocybin-psychedelics-101)—the psychoactive component of ***magic mushrooms***. Young professionals reported using small enough doses of these substances to elicit certain responses, like depression relief, without any larger hallucinogenic effects that could inhibit everyday activities. \n\nThis concept quickly gained in popularity in a cannabis space that was initially focused on products with high amounts of [tetrahydrocannabinol](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) (THC). Now, microdosing is all the rage with products like [Kiva’s Petra Mints](https://www.kivaconfections.com/brand/petra) and [Terra Bites](https://www.kivaconfections.com/brand/terra), which come in at a manageable 2.5 mg of THC per mint and 5 mg of THC per bite. \n\nEdible makers still have to address their own dosing problem: Multiple reports in U.S. states with recreational cannabis markets have found that [the amount of THC on the package doesn’t necessarily correlate with how much of the molecule is in the edible](https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/news/media/releases/medical_marijuana_edibles_mostly_mislabeled_study_shows) itself. \n\nLuckily, microdosing edibles aren’t your only options: **Tinctures** offer a more accurate way to dose, and there are also inhalable alternatives. Low-THC prerolls like those sold by [The Garden Society](https://thegardensociety.com/) are a burgeoning option. They allow newbies or those with a low THC tolerance to smoke flower with little fear that they’ll accidentally overdo it. And [dosist](https://dosist.com/) vapor pens vibrate after 2.5 mg of THC has been inhaled, letting users know exactly how much they’ve had.\n\nThere are also a number of cannabis inhalers available that are designed to give metered doses. Israel-based Syqe Medical has managed to attract the attention of [Teva Pharmaceuticals](https://www.tevapharm.com/) with a medical cannabis inhaler that delivers standardized doses of cannabis. The device is already in use in Rambam Hospital in Israel and has even undergone [a small clinical trial to test its dosing accuracy](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25118789). \n\n![Hello6-min (12).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello6_min_12_66859b92da.png)\n\n### 2. Technology That Tracks Your Cannabis Dosing\n\nIf you’re having trouble keeping track of your cannabis consumption, never fear: There’s—unsurprisingly—an app for that. [Releaf](https://releafapp.com/) is a digital cannabis journal. Consumers note what they’ve taken, how much of it and how it made them feel. All of the data are recorded in the app, which creates reports you can share with your doctor or another appropriate caregiver.\n\nOther brands like [Resolve](http://www.resolvedigitalhealth.com/) are also using technology to help customers find their perfect dose. The company’s “smart inhaler” pairs with an app where users input their pain levels. Based on this report, the app calculates an appropriate dose. The app then pings the user, asking them to record how they feel 10 minutes after consuming. By aggregating this data and offering a way to precisely consume cannabis, the consumer can have an easier time determining how much of Resolve’s product is needed for pain relief.\n\n![Hello4-min (24).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_24_8240521b5f.png)\n\n### 3. Cannabis Products That Are Designed & Touted for Their Effects\n\nWhile some companies are focusing on helping consumers hone their dosing levels, other companies are “designing” cannabis effects to help consumers figure out what they should take. By controlling the amount of [cannabinoids](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/cannabinoids-chemical-compounds-with-huge-therapeutic-potential) and [terpenes](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/what-are-cannabis-terpenes-and-how-do-they-work) in their product, companies aim to create predetermined effects that eliminate the uncertainty that sometimes happens when consuming cannabis—especially edibles. \n\nReconstructing cannabis highs is common among vapor pen companies like AbsoluteXtracts and dosist. Both companies use components of the cannabis plant to create particular effects.\n\nIn AbsoluteXtracts’ case, the company reconstructs strain profiles to give consumers effects they recognize from their favorite cannabis strains, like [Jack Herer](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/jack-herer), [Blue Dream](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/blue-dream), and [Sour Diesel](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/sour-diesel). While dosist uses the same principle to elicit effects like bliss, relief, passion, calm, arouse and sleep. \n\nOther companies, like [Canopy Growth](https://www.canopygrowth.com/), are taking this idea and attempting to apply it to the burgeoning cannabis beverage market. The company is collaborating with MillerCoors to develop a cannabis beer that mimics the effects of alcohol. The beer will even “hit” drinkers in the same amount of time it takes for an alcoholic beer to take effect. \n\n![Hello1-min (25).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_25_08bb84ad6d.png)\n\n### 4. Layering Cannabis Can Help You Achieve Certain Effects\n\nLayering is a concept that experienced cannabis consumers have likely been doing for a long time, perhaps without even knowing it. Layering is mixing and matching various cannabis products to achieve a certain effect. According to HelloMD Co-founder [Pamela Hadfield](https://www.linkedin.com/in/pamela-hadfield-19a986), layering can be done in two ways:\n\n* within a product line\n* by using different cannabis consumption methods together \n\nLevel Blends has taken the idea of tailoring cannabis highs to the next, well, level. In addition to tailoring highs with products like [Elevate](https://elevatecannabis.co/), [Soothe](https://soothelife.com/) and [Remedy](https://www.remedyyourself.com/), the company’s line of tablinguals is also designed so customers can mix and match different products to obtain the effect they’re looking for.\n\nFor example, if you’re looking to relax but still be engaged, you might combine Soothe with Elevate. The mixing and matching are up to the individual consumer, but the company also provides an [infographic](https://www.instagram.com/p/BhIIEMBhqrf/?taken-by=level.blends) to give folks an idea of how they might use their products in concert. \n\nIf you’re already an experienced cannabis consumer with a wide array of products at your disposal, layering with different consumption methods might help you achieve a desired effect. “If you have chronic pain, maybe start with your vape pen, then move on to your edible and then your topical,” suggests Pamela. \n\nEven with the advent of new technologies in cannabis dosing, finding the right amount and the best consumption method still requires some experimentation. Hopefully, with some of the products and methods listed here, you’ll be on your way to finding your perfect dose. If all else fails, remember the basics: Start low and go slow. \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.\n\n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\n\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). This refers to the practice of consuming low doses of cannabis at regular intervals rather than what most people have historically done—consume lots of cannabis in one sitting. People mostly talk about microdosing [tetrahydrocannabinol](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) (THC), but an increasing number of people microdose [cannabidiol](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd) (CBD), too.\n\nMany folks are now finding that microdosing gives them the health benefits they’re seeking **without too much of a psychoactive experience**. People can microdose marijuana throughout the day and still work and be productive. HelloMD Co-founder [Pamela Hadfield](https://www.linkedin.com/in/pamela-hadfield-19a986) swears by microdosing CBD, which allows her to keep debilitating [migraines](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/new-study-finds-cannabis-effective-in-treatment-for-migraines) at bay while still being able to run a business and take care of her three children. \n\nHere’s a roundup of our three most popular questions about microdosing cannabis and how it can help with **pain**, **inflammation**, **anxiety**, and more. We hope this information gives you a little more insight into **microdosing marijuana** and how it could be beneficial to you. \n\n![Hello2-min (26).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello2_min_26_b45b29ac52.png)\n\n### Q. How long do you wait between doses when microdosing?\n**\"*I don't know my tolerance yet. I believe half a dose of [Kiva Chocolates](https://www.kivaconfections.com/brand/kiva) made me sick the other night, but I’m not certain the chocolate was the cause.*\"**\n\n**Answer:** Since microdosing is a small amount of, in this case, THC, it can take some time for it to work. Any oral medication can take up to 1–1 1/2 hours to feel any effect. Since the dose is small, you usually don't feel the psychoactive high that you would normally get with smoking or vaping cannabis. It can be a subtle feeling that you might not even recognize until you say, \" Hey, I've been feeling/thinking/focusing differently since I've been microdosing!\" \n\nAs for feeling sick, it may have been the chocolate, but I cannot say. Kiva also has various types of confections that don’t have chocolate, so you could try those and see how you go.\n\n![Hello1-min (25).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_25_08bb84ad6d.png)\n\n### Q. Cannabis for inflammation and anxiety\n**\"*I have a 4:1 (CBD:THC) tincture and wonder how much you recommend for daily microdosing for inflammation and anxiety?***\"\n\n**Answer:** I love the approach of daily microdosing with cannabis and especially with CBD-rich medications. With the goals of reducing both [inflammation](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-cbd-can-curb-chronic-inflammation) and [anxiety](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/3-popular-questions-about-cbd-and-anxiety-answered), daily microdosing with a 4:1 tincture is a perfect choice. While dosing is somewhat dependent on individual response and tolerance, I'd consider just 1-2 drops (not droppers full) 2-3 times a day. If you know you are particularly sensitive, even 1 drop 2-3 times a day is a great way to get the most benefit out of your medication. Microdosing is best with lower dosing, of course, but also greater frequency. We find that 2-3 times a day is ideal for keeping your medication metabolizing regularly and maximizing the therapeutic properties of inflammation and anxiety reduction.\n\n![Hello4-min (23).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_23_489cb45ba1.png)\n\n### Q. CBD dosing\n**\"*I am just starting to experiment with CBD. The product I have is a 25:1 CBD to THC tincture. How many drops would be a starting dose? I’m trying to understand the concept of microdosing.\"***\n\n**Answer:** Typically, when people talk about microdosing in the cannabis world, it's in the context of THC. Micordosing is supposed to give you positive effects without the psychoactive effects you could feel at higher doses. \n\nBut as for your tincture...there is no set dose per person. After doing a quick search of your product online, it looks like 1 drop = 1 mg CBD. Keep in mind that you might not feel anything right away. I've interviewed many patients and experts on CBD dosing, and those who see the best results take their CBD tincture every day—think of it as a vitamin. These folks have all said that it takes about one month for it to build up in your system. I'm not a doctor, but if I was trying to figure out a dosing routine for myself, I'd do at least 5 mg of CBD 2 to 3 times a day for at least three days and then reassess. If I didn't notice a difference, I would opt for a different tincture or a higher dose.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post.\n\n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\n\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/).
