She was prescribed traditional migraine medication—which didn’t always work and had unpleasant side effects, leaving her “foggy and practically comatose in bed.” Pamela finally found relief years later after trying [cannabidiol (CBD)](https://www.hellomd.com/articles/how-does-cannabis-work-to-relieve-migraines) sublingual spray. That experience—and the relief she found using cannabis—was what inspired her to begin HelloMD.\n\nHere are several lifestyle changes you can incorporate into your day—including **adding cannabis** to your daily routine—to help you get a handle on preventing and managing your migraines.\n\n![Hello4-min (23).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_23_489cb45ba1.png)\n\n### Microdose With Marijuana to Keep Migraines at Bay\n\nTaking very small amounts of cannabis is also known as [microdosing](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/microdosing) and can be an effective way to medicate. [CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/cbd) has been shown to relieve neurogenic pain, and [tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)](https://www.hellomd.com/tag/thc) has anti-inflammatory properties—both can help reduce migraines. \n\n![Hello1-min (28).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello1_min_28_5c6cd240aa.png)\n\n### Stay Hydrated to Ward Off Migraines\n\nGetting enough water throughout the day keeps you from getting dehydrated, which is a common trigger for migraines. To make sure you’re getting enough fluids, set a daily water intake goal and try to keep a water bottle nearby. Eating fruits and vegetables that are high in water content can help too. Some good choices are watermelons, strawberries, zucchini, and cucumbers.\n\n![Hello4-min (22).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello4_min_22_6ff20480bb.png)\n\n### Practise a New Response to Stress\n\nIt’s no secret that chronic stress and anxiety lead to tension throughout the body, so learning how to manage your mood can do a lot to help reduce migraines. Finding an outlet like physical movement (yoga, walking, stretching), meditation, listening to calming music, or just having a good laugh can all help you decompress and prevent your body from responding to stress with a raging migraine.\n\n![iStock-1255853773-min.jpg](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/i_Stock_1255853773_min_d8fad890f8.jpg)\n\n### Keep Your Sleep Routine in Check\n\nWhile you’re asleep, your body does most of its repair, but too much sleep can be just as much of a problem as sleeping too little. Pay attention to your sleep patterns and take note if it’s late nights with little sleep that triggers your migraines or if it’s sleeping in for too long that makes the difference. If possible, try to avoid major changes in your sleep schedule that may disrupt your normal routine and throw off your body’s internal clock. \n\n![Hello3-min (24).png](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/Hello3_min_24_97f7880cd2.png)\n\n### Get Physical to Reduce Migraine Frequency\n\nSpeaking of physical movement, studies have shown—and many migraine sufferers report—a [reduction in migraine frequency with regular exercise](https://americanmigrainefoundation.org/understanding-migraine/effects-of-exercise-on-headaches-and-migraines/). When you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which act as a natural painkiller and stress reliever, and also help improve sleep. The key is finding a physical activity you like and are more likely to stick with, whatever it is. Just be careful not to start any exercise if you’re already in the middle of a migraine episode, and avoid extremely strenuous activities as they can trigger migraines. \n\n![iStock-825886208-min.jpg](https://hellomd-cms.s3.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/i_Stock_825886208_min_cd6c860a0f.jpg)\n\n### Avoid Foods that Are Potential Migraine Triggers\n\nFor some people, [foods high in histamines, nitrates, sulfates, and/or tyramine](https://migraine.com/blog/elimination-diet-foods-to-eat-foods-to-avoid/) such as avocados, bananas, citrus fruits, soy, cured and processed meats, aged cheese, red wine, nuts, and chocolate can trigger a migraine. It may be helpful to keep a food diary so you can pinpoint foods that coincide with your migraines. That way, you can start making some informed changes to your diet as a means of prevention.\n\nHopefully, with a little bit of experimentation, you’ll find the right combination of sleep schedule, eating patterns, and cannabis consumption to help you live your best life—migraine-free.\n\n### Get a Medical Marijuana Card Online\n\nIt's easy to get your medical marijuana document with the online [Telehealth service HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/get-started/). This has been happening since I was a teenager. I am wondering if cannabis can help stop them and/or alleviate the pain.***\n\nAnswer: @drbluto\n\nHeadaches in women, particularly migraines, are tied to shifts in the levels of the female hormone estrogen during your menstrual cycle. Estrogen levels drop right before the start of your menstrual flow.

\n\nCannabis has been shown to reduce the frequency of migraines and it also works quickly to relieve the symptoms of tension headaches as they occur.

\n\nMigraines may be the result of generators such as a bright light or loud noises triggers a chemical reaction in the brain. We have our own built-in endocannabinoid system that produces a substance called anandamide that is very similar in structure to cannabis. Sometimes our endocannabinoids, usually released to restore equilibrium, are low. When this happens and we have endocannabinoid dysfunction, resulting in an inability for the brain to normalize communication. Without these endocannabinoids and their respective functions, a migraine may subsequently occurs.

\n\nThere is plenty of anecdotal evidence that has shown the effectiveness of cannabis in treating pain caused by migraines and chronic headaches.

\n\nVarious strains that may help include the Hazes, Purple Urkle, Grand Daddy Purple and Purple Kush. If migraines occur frequently, a very small, daily dose of THC may be helpful. Many people have also successfully used CBD tinctures to alleviate migraines.\n\n[Read more answers to this question](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/571e4c7490a4f9000800000f/can-cannabis-help-alleviate-migraines)\n\nRELATED: [Migraines: How I Got off Pain Meds and Found Relief with Cannabis](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5595d75d3264380006170000/migraines-how-i-got-off-pain-meds-and-found-relief-with-cannabis)\n\n`embed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMkAr4gMhLw` \n\n### Q: I get migraines and I hear that cannabis can help to relieve this. What strain is best for migraines?\n\nAnswer: [@pamelahadfield](https://www.hellomd.com/people/pamelahadfield)\n\nI've suffered from migraines for most of my life and cannabis has helped me manage the pain better than anything I have tried so far. My assumption, since you are asking for a strain, is that your preference is to smoke. In my own experience, I have found that I layer different products to help manage the migraine before I get it and to manage the pain during the migraine itself.

\n\nIn terms of strains, it is highly dependent on how your body and your own endocannabinoid system is wired and what your body wants and needs. The cannabinoid receptors in your brain become active when you ingest marijuana and this seems to have a positive impact on migraine headaches. A 2007 animal study found that increased activity within the endocannabinoid system led to reduction in pain signals for instance.

\n\nResearching strains you will find some people prefer Sativa and others insist only Indica works. For me only a CBD dominant strain does the trick. Below I will give you a popular & easily found Sativa, Indica, a Hybrid and my personal favorite a CBD dominant strain which I use often.

\n\n>* Sativa: Sour Diesel & Harlequin
\n>* Indica: Purple Kush &
\n>* Hybrid: Girl Scout Cookie & Lemon OG Kush
\n>* CBD dominant: ACDC (non psychoactive)

\n\nAs I mentioned above, I layer my products. It is important for me to catch a headache before it becomes full blown. I use a CBD dominant sublingual spray of 8 parts CBD to 1 part THC as soon as a I feel a headache coming in. Cannabidiol (CBD) is both an analgesic and an anti inflammatory. I carry an ACDC vape pen with me. I also use a topical cream on my neck-my personal favorite in California is called Sweet Releaf. I will also use a mild THC tincture (low in milligrams) which seems to relax me.

\n\nAs a precaution, I take CBD on a daily basis to keep inflammation under control. I also do daily doses of both vitamin B6 and B12 which in studies has shown to reduce migraines two fold for patients after taking it for 6 months. I also take a magnesium supplement daily as people with migraines have shown lower levels than average.

\n\nCannabis is not a silver bullet for migraines, but it got me off of migraine meds and Vicodin. Everyone is different and my suggestion is to start low and slow and micro dose with anything that is new to you. Lastly, some people find that edibles help with their migraines, but I do not seem to tolerate them well.

\n\nI hope this helps!\n\n[Read more answers to this question.](https://www.hellomd.com/answers/571fa617088912000800002c/i-get-migraines-and-i-hear-that-cannabis-can-help-to-relieve-this-what-strain-is-best-for-migraines)\n\n### Q: Can you use CBD oil while on prescription meds for migraines?\n\nAnswer: @andrewvanMD\n\nYes CBD oil and cannabis in general does not cause adverse drug reactions when taken along with other medications. Often it is best to utilize cannabis as a method to lower the amounts of prescription medication needed to manage the migraines.\n\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. A migraine attack can involve severe pain around one or both eyes, often accompanied by disorienting side effects like nausea and vomiting, and lasting between 4 and 72 hours. Cluster headaches are brief, acute headaches that happen throughout the day, usually affecting one side of the head or causing pain around one eye. \n\nAs a migraine sufferer herself, HelloMD’s co-founder [Pamela Hadfield]( https://www.hellomd.com/people/pamelahadfield) says her personal experience with migraines is one of the reasons she started HelloMD. She says, “My migraines were very severe and would not allow me to function normally. After many failed attempts with various prescription medications, I found pain relief with Vicodin, but it also had a significant downside. I started using Vicodin routinely and became worried I might become addicted. When I eventually tried cannabis, I found it not only helped with the pain but it ultimately prevented my migraines altogether. Today, I no longer suffer from the types of migraines that once plagued me.” \n\n### Alternative Treatments Established\n\nThe latest study, led by Dr. Maria Nicolodi of the Interuniversity Center in Italy, aims to show that cannabis can be used as an alternative treatment to traditional pain medication. The study included 127 participants who suffer from chronic migraines and cluster headaches. Medical cannabis treatments made up of varying ratios of cannabinoids tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) were tested alongside the traditional medications used for migraines.\n\nIn the first of the two-phase study, 48 adult patients who suffer from chronic, acute migraines were given varying doses of a combination of THC and CBD. After treating patients with cannabis medicine every day for three months, researchers found that migraine pain fell a significant 55% when patients were given doses of 200 mg or more. (Doses of 100 mg or less were not effective.)\n\nThe second phase of the study tested both patients who experience migraines and those who experience cluster headaches, and tested cannabis medicine side-by-side with traditional medications. Migraine patients were given either 200 mg of THC-CBD daily or 25 mg of amitriptyline, an antidepressant medication often used to treat migraines. Patients with cluster headaches were given either 200 mg of THC-CBD daily or 480 mg of verapamil, a calcium channel blocker often used to treat cluster headaches. Patients in the cannabis group were advised to take an extra 200 mg of THC-CBD when they experienced acute pain.\n\nThe results of the second phase show that THC-CBD treatments led to a slightly greater prevention of migraines compared to amitriptyline (40.4% vs 40.1%) and a significant 43.5% reduction in acute pain. For patients with cluster headaches (a much rarer condition than migraines), the THC-CBD was effective, but only for those who patients have experienced the headaches since childhood. \n\nRELATED:[HOW TO STOP MIGRAINES](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5833c3741acf3d000ce08758/how-to-stop-migraines)\n\nCannabis medicine was administered in oral doses, starting with 10 mg of “a combination of the two compounds;” one with 19% THC and the other with 9% CBD and virtually no THC. It should be noted that no further information was provided regarding the ratio of THC to CBD used, so we cannot draw conclusions about the which compound was more or less effective, but we do see that both used together are effective. \n\n### Cannabis Treatments Work\n\nDr. Nicolodi concludes that they “were able to demonstrate that cannabinoids are an alternative to established treatments in migraine prevention.” Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the most well-known component of cannabis, is also the primary psychoactive component of the plant, while cannabidiol (CBD), has been making news as a cannabinoid that offers a myriad of therapeutic benefits without the psychoactive effects of THC. While the study does not specify what amount of each compound made up the dosage, we know that it was a combination of the two that treated the pain.\n\nThere are still more trials underway to test how effective cannabis can be to treat various conditions, including chronic pain. Evidence continues to build that cannabis-based treatments can be used as a replacement for opiate painkillers. This study is one more important step along the way to reducing the amount of people addicted to and overdosing on opiates in our country.\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Why I have never been able to sleep is a mystery to me and my doctors. Once I became an adult I also started to experience migraines. Once they started it was not unusual for me to experience anywhere from fifteen to twenty a month. They are excruciating and have caused constant pain for me.\n\n### Previous Treatments\n\nPrior to trying cannabis I used Ambien nightly to help me sleep as well as other prescription sleeping pills. For my migraines I tried every drug available including injections. Nothing was working, my migraines were still as bad and I still was not sleeping well. I really tried everything, I exhausted every option before I tried cannabis for the first time.\n\nRELATED: [MARIJUANA & MIGRAINES: SALLY'S SUCCESS STORY](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5834944a14533400080243bc/marijuana-and-migraines-sallys-success-story)\n\n### Cannabis Experience\n\nI began using cannabis 4 years ago, after becoming depressed that nothing else was working. I had heard it might help me so I researched it. First, I started by smoking an indica flower as a preventative treatment, to see if it might work. At the time, my neurologist was having me keep a sleep journal. After a couple of months of smoking it became clear that I was sleeping much better. The only change I had made was smoking cannabis. \n\nOverall, the severity of my migraines decreased drastically and I was sleeping! Now I take a very active approach and make sure that I smoke regularly as a preventative measure. I typically smoke in the evening just before bedtime, this works for me.\n\n### The Cannabis Tool Kit\n\n### Flower\n\nI make sure to smoke an indica every night before I go to bed. I am not really picky about which one, they all seem to make me drowsy and I typically smoke a pipe. My goal is to make sure I always have some THC in my system, which is the preventative measure for me. When I have a migraine, I find that strains higher in CBD, like [Cannatonic](https://hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce5dcd520d60009f4f4bd) or [Harlequin](https://hellomd.com/strains/5a9d9ad8fdb6dd00088d0cf1), will help me manage the pain.\n\n### Liz Says...\n\n\"I have had life long insomnia. With cannabis I fall asleep faster, and I’m able to drop off peacefully rather than tossing and turning and waiting forever to get that drowsy feeling.\"\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. The first migraine I had in my teens hit me like a lightning bolt, and I fell to the ground on my knees holding my head and it didn’t stop until I passed out and woke up 24 hours later. From that time on I would experience migraines frequently and they would come in clusters. Often I would be vomiting, see an aura and spend days in bed. \n\nVisiting with doctors, they never really had an answer but they would hand me a prescription. After multiple medications that did not work, and all which had intense side effects, plus visits to alternative practitioners, I assumed this was something that I needed to live with. And I did, for the next 20+ years. As time wore on my migraines settled into a monthly pattern. But after the birth of my 3rd child, they suddenly became much, much worse.\n\n### Opioids - A Long Term Solution? \n\nTrying to raise three kids all under the age of 4 and working full time, I did not have time for migraines. So, at the onset of a migraine I would pop a Vicodin and maybe another. The Vicodin helped to keep the pain at bay, as I needed to function and could not afford to spend hours, much less days in bed. Even at the time, I knew this needed to be a short term strategy, addiction was too easy a trap.\n\nFinally, a friend insisted that I consider cannabis as a solution. Honestly, I had nothing to lose, but I thought my chances of success were zero to none. I also did not consider myself a stoner.\n\n### Marijuana Stopped My Migraines \n\nMarijuana stopped my migraines. After 20+ years, I do not experience frequent migraines anymore. It did not happen right away but today I live relatively pain free, and free of narcotics. How did I do it? It’s a two step process. The first step is preventative, which cannot be over emphasized. The second step is preventing pain if a migraine/headache does sneak through. \n\nThe preventative steps are relatively simple. I take 10 mg of 20:1 CBD to THC Rosette Wellnesstincture in the morning. I have found this ratio to be the most effective. Later in the day I take Moxie Meds 4:1 tincture, also at a 10 mg dosage.\n \nIt is important to note that high ratio CBD products do not make you high and although I ingest cannabis throughout the day, I am never high when taking these preventative measures. Also, CBD is not a silver bullet that takes effect in a day or two. I have found that the effects are cumulative and it took a 2-3 months of daily dosing before the longer lasting impact was felt.\n\nIn addition to cannabis, I also take [Vitamin B and Magnesium](http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/condition/migraine-headache) which research has found to reduce migraines in patients who take these supplements regularly. I make sure to exercise regularly, typically hiking 3x a week and yoga 3x a week. Lastly, I eliminated gluten, soy and wine from my diet, which personally helped me, but may not be necessary for others.\n\nToday, I am almost 100% migraine free. What does happen is what I call a ‘shadow headache’. When I feel the shadow descending, which is usually the result of a stressful event, I reach for my vape pen. As I do not do well with high THC, my oil cartridges are always high CBD and low THC. \n\nCBD is known to be an analgesic as well as an anti inflammatory. My favorite oil cartridge is Bloom Farms Electra Tsu 3:1 oil cartridge. LOVE…I even wrote them a haiku, my highest form of praise and adoration.\n\n### Preventing Migraines\n\nMigraine prevention is a possible. What triggers a migraine is individual, but the solutions mentioned above could prevent yours. I am always surprised by the amount of acceptance I hear from migraine sufferers, where all the attention is paid to pain management rather than migraine prevention. Why not try to stop them before they begin? As a result of my preventative efforts my life has changed significantly, for the better. I hope perhaps my solution helps you or someone you know.\n\nDo you have a migraine solution? A 2016 study out of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado concluded that [using medical marijuana could greatly reduce the frequency of migraine headaches](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26749285). \r\n\r\nThe study, which was published in the _Journal of Human Pharmacology and Drug Therapy_, included 121 adult participants. With the use of cannabis in multiple forms on a daily basis, the average number of migraines decreased from 10.4 to 4.6 per month. Overall 85% of participants reported fewer migraines, 19.8% reported that cannabis helped prevent their migraines, and 11.6% of participants said that medical marijuana stopped their migraines altogether. The study also identified that the inhalation of marijuana was the best administration method for fast migraine relief. \r\n\r\n### Marijuana and Migraines: The Endocannabinoid Connection\r\n\r\nA 2008 study published in _Neuroendocrinology Letters_ found that [migraines are deeply connected with endocannabinoid function](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18404144). The study stated that the possible cause of migraines could be an endocannabinoid deficiency, meaning cannabis could be extremely helpful in decreasing migraines by supplementing the body's natural store of endocannabinoids. \r\n\r\nCannabidiol (CBD) has been found to be very effective at treating migraines because of its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is also helpful at relieving migraine symptoms due to its ability to greatly reduce pain. CBD-heavy strains, however, help alleviate symptoms while keeping sufferers alert. \r\n\r\nMost notably, because they have little to no psychoactivity, high CBD strains will allow a patient to get through the day without the feeling of being stoned. Most of the high CBD strains listed below do contain some THC however. Depending on how sensitive you are to THC, some marijuana strains may be borderline psychoactive. It will require a bit of trial and error to see which CBD strain works best in easing your migraines while keeping you on your toes during the day.\r\n\r\n### The Best CBD Marijuana Strains for Migraine Relief\r\n\r\n#### Canna-Tsu\r\n\r\nCanna-Tsu is a hybrid strain that’s a mix of Cannatonic and Sour Tsunami. Canna-Tsu is known for its high levels of CBD and low levels of THC. It’s known to produce calming effects and mental clarity. Canna-Tsu helps reduce inflammation, which is often one of the most common causes of migraines. This marijuana strain is also well known for alleviating the pain associated with migraines and headaches. \r\n\r\n#### Harlequin\r\n\r\nHarlequin is a 75% sativa-dominant hybrid that has a 5:2 CBD to THC ratio. With about 4–7% THC and 8–16% CBD, Harlequin produces the feeling of a clear-headed alertness, which may help people get through their day. With its nice a balance of THC to CBD, this marijuana strain is very helpful for people that have high levels of pain associated with migraines. Harlequin is also known to be relaxing, but non-sedative and without the intense psychoactive high that comes with higher levels of THC. \r\n\r\n#### ACDC\r\n\r\n[ACDC](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cbe97d520d60009f4f4a5/acdc) is a high CBD strain that’s sativa-dominant. ACDC has a 20:1 CBD to THC ratio, with CBD levels as high as 19%. It’s known for its efficacy at reducing inflammation because of its high levels of CBD. This makes it effective at reducing the symptoms of migraines. ACDC is also good at reducing anxiety and depression. Due to its extremely low THC content, this marijuana strain isn’t likely to give you a psychoactive high.\r\n\r\n#### Cannatonic\r\n\r\n[Cannatonic](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7ce5dcd520d60009f4f4bd/cannatonic) is known for its low THC content, which is often below 6%, and its high CBD content, which is normally at about 6–17% and sometimes even higher. It’ss known for producing relaxing and uplifting effects. Cannatonic is acclaimed as one of the top medical marijuana strains because it’s great at treating headache and migraine pain with little to no psychoactive effects.\r\n\r\n#### Sour Tsunami\r\n\r\nSour Tsunami is specifically bred for its high CBD content, making it effective at reducing inflammation that’s a part of migraines. It’s a sativa-dominant hybrid with about 10% CBD and a THC content under 10%. Sour Tsunami is known for its ability to relieve pain associated with migraines. At a 1:1 ratio, this marijuana strain may induce psychoactive effects, although it will likely be at most a mild high.\r\n\r\n#### Remedy\r\n\r\nRemedy is an indica strain with high levels of CBD—around 15%—and almost no THC—less than 1%. Remedy is known to produce a mellow, relaxed state. Its high CBD levels make this marijuana strain good at helping reduce the inflammation that causes migraines. Remedy is most akin to ACDC as it’s known to help with pain without the head high that’s associated with higher levels of THC. \r\n\r\n#### Stephen Hawking Kush\r\n\r\nStephen Hawking Kush, also known as SHK, is an indica-dominant hybrid. Stephen Hawking Kush is known for its high levels of CBD. It’s known to be soothing and relaxing. Its also known for its ability to keep pain at bay despite having low levels of THC. There are three slightly different phenotypes of SHK, and they’re all known to be extremely effective at treating migraines. Also known to help people with fatigue, SHK keeps people alert even as it relieves their pain symptoms. \r\n\r\n#### Hawaiian Dream\r\n\r\nHawaiian Dream is known to be an uplifting sativa strain with high levels of CBD. It usually has about double the amount of CBD as it does THC. Hawaiian Dream is known to be a good remedy for treating the pain and inflammation of migraines. This marijuana strain is also known to provide relief without inducing brain fog, so it’s extremely helpful for the daytime treatment of migraine symptoms.\r\n\r\n#### Sweet and Sour Widow\r\n\r\nSweet and Sour Widow is a 70% indica-dominant cannabis strain. It typically has a ratio of 1:1 of CBD to THC. This makes this cannabis strain effective through its pain-relieving qualities of THC while remaining borderline or mild in its psychoactive effect. Meanwhile, the CBD contained in Sweet and Sour Widow provides the added benefit of anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve migraine symptoms while keeping a clear head.\r\n\r\nDo you have questions about marijuana and migraines? HelloMD is excited to highlight Green Flower's latest online video course entitled [Cannabis as Medicine](http://greenflowermedia.ontraport.net/t?orid=57479&opid=58). We hope you enjoy their first article below which talks about the history of cannabis and their educational video series.\r\n\r\n### A Brief History of Cannabis\r\n\r\nCannabis has been used for medicinal purposes for centuries. It's reported that the first documented use of cannabis for medical purposes was in 2737 BC by the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung. Medical cannabis products were even common in America until federal prohibition was passed in 1937. That complete prohibition on medical cannabis ended in 1976 when, after a successful legal challenge, the United States government started a program which supplies medical cannabis to patients.\r\n\r\n### The Legalization Wave\r\n\r\nIn 1996, California became the first state to legalize medical cannabis in America. Since that time, 24 more states followed suit. More states are voting on medical cannabis in November, and hopefully that will lead to more states being added to the medical cannabis legalization list. More and more people are using cannabis, which is a good thing. However, a lot of stigma and misinformation is still out there. That has led to a lot of patients being hesitant to use medical cannabis, even thought it would help them.\r\n\r\n### Cannabis As Medicine\r\n\r\nThe research study results are out there in regards to the medical properties of cannabis, as are personal testimonies from patients that have successfully treated their conditions with cannabis. So why are some patients so hesitant to consider medical cannabis? Obviously, more information needs to get in the hands and minds of people that need to hear it, and in a format and setting that works best for them to receive such important information.\r\n\r\nKeeping that in mind, we are excited to announce a new video series titled, [Cannabis as Medicine](http://greenflowermedia.ontraport.net/t?orid=57479&opid=58) which was produced and released by our team Green Flower Media. The series is comprised of three videos. The series includes leading experts in their fields of study, can be viewed completely free of cost (for a limited time), and all from the privacy of one's home.\r\n\r\nThe videos will cover all types of ailments, including Pain, Insomnia, Depression, Anxiety, Inflammation, Seizures, Nausea, Cancer, Arthritis, ADD, Headaches/Migraines, PTSD, Menstrual Cramps, Pediatrics, ADD, Alzheimer's\r\n& Asthma.\r\n\r\n### Learning the Value of Cannabis\r\n\r\nHealth issues are often private, sometimes embarrassing to talk about, and/or sensitive to discuss for the patient. That's one big reason why we feel this video series is so important to share with others, as they can view the videos in a private setting that they are comfortable with.\r\n\r\nHow can cannabis be an effective medicine? How can a patient get the benefits of cannabis without the 'high?' What are some of the fears and misconceptions that patients face when considering to use medical cannabis? Those are just a few questions that will be covered in this video series.\r\n\r\nCheck out the video series, and share it with anyone that you think would benefit from the information. Given the enormous amount of quality information involved, there's something for everyone. In this review I am going to share my absolute favorite CBD product available in California. It has altered me, forever, for the better!\n\n### Bloom Farms – CBD Electra-Tsu Cartridge\n\nBloom Farms is a beloved manufacturer within the California cannabis industry. The packaging is dead gorgeous, the vape pen experience is exceptional and the cannabis is sourced from top tier farms that harvest crops with organic practices. Often when you mention Bloom Farms, people get a happy look upon their face, and why not, they deliver a great experience. As a more or less purely medicinal consumer with a very low THC tolerance, I have found high THC vape pens simply have not worked well for me. So for the most part, Bloom Farms has not been an option for a cannabis consumer like myself. That is, until now!\n\n### Electra-Tsu is a CBD Bombshell\n\nLet’s be totally clear, Bloom Farms CBD Electra-Tsu oil 3:1 cartridge has officially stolen my heart. It has run away with it, hands down, this is my favorite CBD vape pen experience of all time. I can stop looking, I want to get married. Really.\n\nI have tried many CBD vape pens over the years and some work pretty well, enough to take the edge off of a migraine but none sent me to the moon. Taking an inhale of the Electra-Tsu, the woody flavor is lovely, with a tinge of a sweet aftertaste. The feeling of deep relaxation after a few inhales is exquisite. It is usually at this point I assume I will start getting sleepy, but with Electra-Tsu, there was a little kick of happiness and euphoria, which I guess is related to it being sativa-dominant. The ratio of 3 parts CBD to 1 part THC seems to be the perfect ratio, for me at least, and it turned my headache on its heels! This is a 'borderline' psychoactive oil cartridge, I felt GREAT but not altered significantly. It was just just enough! \n\nElectra-Tsu deserves to be placed in the limelight. She was bred specifically to be higher in CBD than THC. CBD happens to be non psychoactive as well, so it is a great choice for pain relief when you also need to function. The strain was bred from the combination of Electra and Tsunami and because the ratio of CBD is so high to THC, you will not feel like you need to go to bed or can’t leave the couch. It is also noted that this strain was bred to treat “pain, stress, and depression, without any anxiety or paranoid side effects”. I completely agree, as a person who tends to get cannabis-induced anxiety, this strain absolutely lives up to the promise. I purchased my cartridge at Sava, which does state wide delivery.\n\n### My Bloom Farms Haiku\n\nIf I were to write a Haiku about my love of the CBD Electra-Tsu vape pen and my gratitude to Bloom Farms for releasing a CBD product to an audience like me it would go like this:\n\n>Electra-Tsu you\n\n>Stole my heart instantly\n\n>Please don’t go away.\n\nEVER.\n\nDo you have questions about Bloom Farms? Migraines are the third-most prevalent illness in the world, and they’re three times more likely to affect woman then men. Migraines are not only painful, but can be extremely debilitating. Ninety percent of migraine sufferers can’t work or complete daily activities while suffering from a migraine. Migraines can last up to 72 hours, greatly affecting the life of those who suffer from the affliction. Marijuana can provide relief for migraine sufferers in place of more severe pharmaceuticals.\r\n\r\nHere’s what Dr. Frye has to say about migraines.\r\n\r\n### What causes migraines?\r\n\r\nIt was once believed that migraines were caused by dilated blood vessels, but it’s now thought that migraines are generated by the neurons that supply the meninges, which is the plastic wrap-like covering around the brain. There’s thought that neuronal stimulation not only causes arteries in the area to dilate, but also causes an inflammatory reaction in the meninges and in the trigeminal nerve. It may be the combination of these actions that causes the pain associated with migraines.\r\n\r\nMigraine sufferers can also experience neurogenic pain from stimuli that normally wouldn't evoke a painful sensation, such as simply touching the scalp. The role of serotonin is complex and while not completely understood, it’s thought to be a factor in migraines as well.\r\n\r\nApproximately 75% of migraine patients can identify triggers that cause the migraines to occur. Stress is the most common trigger, affecting 80% of migraine sufferers. Triggers can also be sleeping too much or not enough, going without eating, weather changes, and certain foods or odors. \r\n\r\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/577d4650d64ada0007000013/embedded_images/577ffdacf51c31000b000039/Screen_Shot_2016-07-08_at_12.22.45_PM.png) \r\n\r\n### How can marijuana help relieve migraines?\r\n\r\nRandomized clinical studies on cannabis and migraines are lacking, but there are several mechanisms to explain why it provides relief from migraine pain. Cannabis can attenuate the body’s stress response at the level of the pituitary-adrenal axis by interrupting certain biochemical changes. CBD can be especially helpful in alleviating neurogenic pain, while it and THC have potent anti-inflammatory properties.\r\n\r\nTHC also serves as an analgesic by shutting down pain signaling at the pain receptor level. THC may also contribute to migraine pain relief by raising serotonin levels, as do certain anti-depressants, such as amitriptyline. At high doses, however, THC can have the opposite effect and cause migraine symptoms to worsen. It’s been noted that some regular cannabis users have experienced migraines after discontinuing its use, suggesting that cannabis may have the capacity to prevent migraines. \r\n\r\n### What consumption method for cannabis is best for relieving migraines?\r\n\r\nInhalation delivers medication to the nervous system within seconds and can be used when a patient feels a migraine coming on. It’s much easier to relieve migraine pain when it’s treated early. Once the inhaled dose takes effect, tincture or spray under the tongue can be an effective next step in providing longer-lasting pain relief.\r\n\r\nIt’s important to remember that with cannabis, less is more. Cannabis works best for pain at low to moderate doses. High doses can be ineffective in treating pain and can sometimes make symptoms worse.\r\n\r\nAlways start with a low dose and titrate up every five to 10 minutes with inhalation, every 20–30 minutes with spray or tincture, because by taking too much, you can miss your optimal dose. Also, many patients find relief by applying cannabis salve to the temples, forehead and neck.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3793103448275863,"src":"/static/3ea6a450ac51da64e098f70f1bd8240e/96d46/a92b844b7e620f38519e86e29ecc979a.png","srcSet":"/static/3ea6a450ac51da64e098f70f1bd8240e/69585/a92b844b7e620f38519e86e29ecc979a.png 200w,\n/static/3ea6a450ac51da64e098f70f1bd8240e/497c6/a92b844b7e620f38519e86e29ecc979a.png 400w,\n/static/3ea6a450ac51da64e098f70f1bd8240e/96d46/a92b844b7e620f38519e86e29ecc979a.png 787w","srcWebp":"/static/3ea6a450ac51da64e098f70f1bd8240e/fe80d/a92b844b7e620f38519e86e29ecc979a.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/3ea6a450ac51da64e098f70f1bd8240e/61e93/a92b844b7e620f38519e86e29ecc979a.webp 200w,\n/static/3ea6a450ac51da64e098f70f1bd8240e/1f5c5/a92b844b7e620f38519e86e29ecc979a.webp 400w,\n/static/3ea6a450ac51da64e098f70f1bd8240e/fe80d/a92b844b7e620f38519e86e29ecc979a.webp 787w","sizes":"(max-width: 787px) 100vw, 787px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2085-markdown","title":"THC in Cannabis Topicals: Why It Matters","slug":"thc-in-cannabis-topicals-why-it-matters","content":"DiDi Davis is Founder of [Sweet ReLeaf](https://getsweetreleaf.com/), a topical cannabis manufacturer located in California. Sweet ReLeaf has created one of the most effective and enjoyable topicals on the market today which is creamy and smells wonderful. As Didi says \"We believe in the healing power of plants, specifically how the human endocannabinoid system communicates with the compounds found in Cannabis. We like to call it ‘Intelligent Medicine.’\" In her this blog post Didi talks about why THC matters in topicals.\n\n### The Importance of THC In Cannabis Topicals\n\nThough CBD has been on the tip of everyone’s tongue lately, we’re taking a look at how vital THC is to the pain equation.\n\nCannabis is made up of over 500 compounds and cannabinoids represent around 85 of them. The most significant cannabinoids, by and large, have been THC, THCa, and CBD. In today's news, CBD (or cannabidiol) has practically become a buzzword. Vogue magazine recently wrote about how marijuana-infused products can give you better orgasms. Whoopi Goldberg's new line of menstrual cycle pain relief products contains CBD exclusively. Even nuns have gotten into the CBD product market.\n\nAlthough CBD hosts a myriad of benefits and its non-psychoactive effects are a commercial favorite the star player is still THC when it comes to pain relief. CBD and THC have very similar benefits, but vary in how they interact with our bodies. \n\n### The History of THC\n\nTHC as an isolated compound was discovered by Dr. Raphael Mechoulam in 1964 at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel. He and his associates were able to successfully extract THC from cannabis allowing them to study it exclusively. Dr. Mechoulam is a strong advocate for cannabis as medicine and his research has led to several other discoveries about cannabis including the discovery of the human endocannabinoid system. This naturally occurring system communicates organically with cannabis compounds.\n\n### What is THC?\n\nTHC (or tetrahydrocannabinol) is the chemical compound found in most marijuana plants. When smoked or ingested, THC stimulates brain cells to release dopamine creating a euphoric high. If THC is applied to the skin, however, it skips the bloodstream and causes no mind-altering effects. It does, however, penetrate deeper tissues to bring relief for pain and inflammation.\n\n### What is THCa?\n\nTHCa, essentially, is the mother of THC. It is a non-psychoactive acid that, once heated to a certain temperature, eventually becomes THC. This process is called 'decarbing' (short for decarboxylating). When used in its purest form, THCa can relieve pain with less dosage than THC or CBD.\n\n### What is CBD?\n\nCBD is often the more submissive compound in cannabis strains. With selective breeding, however, there have been developments of strains containing mostly CBD and almost no THC. CBD is non-psychoactive and tends to create an all-over effect, flooding the entire body.\n\n### THC & Pain\n\nPain, in essence, is nothing more than a communication between our brain and our body to signify that something is wrong. Pain can be felt in different ways. We can feel pain through our nervous system, through our tissues and organs and even through our imagination. THC can intercept this communication and prevent pain from being experienced on a physical level. One of the mechanisms in our bodies which regulates pain is our own endocannabinoid system. \n\nInhaled or ingested, THC carries side-effects like euphoria, sleepiness and increased appetite. These are life-saving benefits to patients with AIDS, cancer, and other serious illnesses. \n\nBut for some, this could be a hindrance to their daily lives. Perhaps a patient has small children to look after and needs as much energy as possible. Those who work in fields that require random drug testing also have to avoid smoking and ingesting cannabis. In these cases, THC-rich topicals provide effective options.\n\n### THC vs. CBD\n\nThe comparison comes down to patient need. CBD is often prescribed to children and those who need a powerful medicine without mood or mind-altering side effects. However, THC is simply more potent. You need less of it to experience relief and it can be extremely useful in calming and sedating patients who need serious help overcoming intense pain or psychological episodes. \n\nTHC used topically is the best of both worlds. It affects the source of pain quickly and exclusively and produces no high to the user. Because it skips the bloodstream, cannabis topicals are undetectable in drug tests and don’t upset the patient’s ability to function. THC-based topicals are a great option for people living with conditions such as:\n\n### Chronic Pain and Arthritis \n\nBy applying directly on the joints, muscles and other parts of the body, even people with chronic pain see immediate results.\n\n### Menstrual Cramps \n\nMenstrual cramps are essentially muscle aches caused by minor contractions. Applying a THC-rich topical to the site will decrease cramps if not eliminate them altogether.\n\n### Skin Conditions \n\nConditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne can all be treated and even cured with a THC-heavy cannabis topical. Because these conditions are often a sign of a larger problem, a cannabis topical should be part of a holistic approach to correcting the imbalance.\n\n### Migraine Headaches \n\nRecent studies have shown that topical cannabis reduces headache frequency when applied directly to the temple.\n\nWhether you prefer an all-over body high, a euphoric mindstate or area-specific pain relief, the first step is to do your research. Don’t be turned off by THC’s less desirable side effects. And don’t automatically assume CBD isn’t strong enough for your condition. Cannabis gives birth to a diverse array of options depending on needs and preferences. THC may be the very thing missing in your treatment plan. We encourage you to ask questions, do your research and stay open to how cannabis and all its cannabinoids can heal.\n\nDo you have questions about Sweet ReLeaf? If you have not heard of their new product [Foria Relief](http://foriapleasure.com/products/relief-4-pack), and you are a woman, I would encourage you to keep reading. This past week Foria launched Foria Relief, a cocoa butter-based vaginal cannabis suppository designed to ease menstrual cramps in women. According to Brittany Confer, the Director of Communications for the company “Relief has been carefully crafted and is intended to maximize the muscle relaxing and pain relieving properties of cannabis without inducing a psychotropic ‘high’. What’s nice about Relief is how it can create a full body sensation of relaxation without delivering the ‘head high’.”\n\nWhat’s interesting to note about the launch of this product and Foria as a company is that it is the only company in the industry seeming to be laser focused on women’s sexual health through the use of non-psychoactive medicinal products. They have successfully navigated a divergent path of both pleasure and pain. Their flagship product [Foria Pleasure](http://foriapleasure.com/pages/about-us) increases sexual pleasure through the use of a THC infused lubricant spray, whereas Foria Relief focuses on diminishing pain generally associated with menstruation, and other related sexual health issues for women. \n\nForia as a company started in California about two years ago with the idea to create a sexual enhancement product for women as an aide to overall health and wellness. Co-founder Mathew Gerson, a veteran of the sex industry and founder of Sir Richard’s Condoms, noted at the time that there were around 26 FDA-approved drugs on the market for increasing male sexual pleasure, but approximately zero available for women. Excited to start a new venture, he began researching how he might enable women to find the same sexual satisfaction through a product formulated with all natural ingredients. During a conversation about CBD health benefits, he stumbled upon cannabis and recalled its historical use by women as a sexual health aid in ancient cultures. Foria Pleasure was born, and the sexual lubricant spray hit the market sparking ladies libidos across the state of California and shortly there after Colorado. \n\n[CANNABIS 101 - THC VS CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-thc-vs-cbd)\n\nThe company traversed the line from pleasure to the diminishment of pain organically a little over a year ago. A well-known Beverly Hills urologist, Dr. Jennifer Berman, began to notice multiple patients within her medical practice discussing Foria Pleasure. The first patient to bring it up was a 75 year old woman who told Dr. Berman she was not only enjoying sex for the first time in years, but was noticeably feeling pain free. Remarkably, more and more patients came in talking about Foria Pleasure discussing how the product not only increased sexual pleasure but also decreased pain associated with other sexual health issues, including PMS and endometriosis. The trend became so prominent that Dr. Berman contacted Foria to discuss women’s sexual health and how the product could further service a population of women who desire sexual pleasure, however needed access to a more effective pain reliever. Foria Relief was conceived through these initial conversations and rapid iterations of research and development began.\n\nForia Relief is inserted vaginally and is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. The medicine contains CBD as well as THC, yet patients will not feel a ‘head high’. Although the product contains the psychoactive cannabinoid THC, the patient will feel a generalized relaxation across the body rather than feeling stoned. Brittany says about Relief “The suppository does not give you a head high, although it contains psychoactive properties, so normal daily activities are not interrupted. Depending on the person, it can give a full body sensation; it makes the body and mind relax, a little giggly and generally more at ease. I often describe my personal experience with Relief similar to a three-way cross between Xanax, a muscle relaxer and a pain pill - except no pharmaceuticals are involved! The body high is subtle, but noticeable - not like smoking cannabis. Foria Relief helps to soothe painful period cramps as well as a host of other pelvic pain-related issues for people who haven’t been able to find relief elsewhere.”\n\nSpeaking from personal experience, Foria Relief provided me with better pain relief than any other cannabis product I have tried to date. Given that I am working within the cannabis industry, it is not a stretch to say I have tried many different products. On the day I tried Foria Relief, I was experiencing noticeable back pain. After inserting the suppository I felt very relaxed within 30 minutes and my back spasm was undetectable within the hour. Additionally, during my cycle I almost always experience at least one migraine. At the onset of a recent migraine I took my second dose of Foria Relief. To my surprise, the migraine went away completely in about an hour and the feeling of full body relaxation lasted for upwards of 6 hours. Although everyone reacts differently to cannabis, my experience was that it is the first medication that fully addresses the type of pain I experience, giving me both relief and a feeling of happy relaxation; all without the feeling of a head high. In other words, I could go about my business and even stay focused at work. It is also important to note that I am incredibly sensitive to the effect of THC and at a whopping 60mg per dose, I was not only functional but feeling great.\n\n[ORGANIC OR SYNTHETIC CBD - WHICH IS BEST?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/565f3c35d031520008000000/organic-or-synthetic-cbd-which-is-best)\n\nForia Relief is sold for $44 (4-pk) and $22 (2-pk). Patients receive a small instruction booklet inside of a reusable tin where each suppository contains 60mg of THC and 10mg of CBD. According to Confer, “We encourage patients to experiment to find the correct dosage that works for their individual body. We say that one suppository is one dose and that you should consider using the first suppository on the first day of cramping even if bleeding has not yet occurred. Relief is usually absorbed in 15-20 minutes and the effects can be felt for up to 4-5 hours. One to two suppositories may be sufficient on the two worst days of your cycle. Typically, research shows that women have extreme pain for only two of days during their period cycle.” \n\nTo buy Foria Relief you can purchase from their online cannabis collective within their [Foria](http://foriapleasure.com/products/relief-4-pack) site and/or at various dispensary locations across California.
