Yoga originated in India, during approximately the same time frame when cannabis appeared. Both yoga and cannabis have been closely tied to meditative processes in India for thousands of years and rose to popularity simultaneously in the United States in the 60s and the 70s. \n\nThe original connection between cannabis and yoga is not exactly known, but different historians have tied the two together in different events, ceremonies, and religious significances. It is believed that the Lord Shiva, the destroyer and creator god in Hinduism, who also happens to be the god of yoga, was rejuvenated from injury after consuming cannabis. Some people believe that this religious connection is what incorporated cannabis into yoga practice in the first place. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nCannabis was also present when many of the modern yoga positions were created. Many of the yoga positions we know of today were created in the 7th century by tantric cultures, who practiced a combination of Shaviaite Hinduism and Tibetan Buddhism. Many of these religious cultures used cannabis regularly as part of their practice while they developed many of the aspects of modern Hatha Yoga. \n\nThe Yoga Sutras, which were compiled in 400 CE, outline the 196 main principles of yoga. The Sutras mention the use of “herbs” to help with subtler attainments. It has been argued by some people that herbs means cannabis, while others refute that fact. Many Sadhu’s today, however, use cannabis for spiritual purposes. These Sadhu’s, or Hindu holy men, believe that cannabis allows them to liberate themselves from perceived existential limits. They use cannabis in all aspects of their prayer, including during yoga. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58a38cc01689ad0017e8493b/embedded_images/58a38cc41689ad0017e8493c/Screen_Shot_2017-02-14_at_2.49.37_PM.png)\nCannabis can help you relax and go deeper into your yoga practice.\n \n### Modern Day Cannabis Use\n\nThe idea of cannabis infused yoga was first brought to the United States in 2012. [Dee Dussault], a yoga teacher in San Francisco, opened the [Ganga Yoga](https://www.deedussault.com/) Practice in San Fransisco to provide her clients with a safe space to combine cannabis and their yoga practice. Though cannabis is optional in the classes, it is highly recommended, and the classes are currently only open to patients who have a registered California Medical Marijuana card. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS FOR INCREASED PASSION & PLAY PART 1](https://hellomd.com/health-wellness/5887f2c9d88c9d000847c1d0/cannabis-for-increased-passion-and-play-part-1)\n\nCannabis can be used to deepen your yoga practice, whether it is in a cannabis-friendly studio or in the comfort of your own home. Cannabis can help increase your focus and mindfulness during yoga. Sometimes people find it hard to rid themselves of their daily stresses while settling into their yoga practice, but cannabis can help focus the mind and free it from frivolous thoughts. Yoga is all about finding your center within yourself and cannabis can help you achieve that goal. Cannabis helps you to de-stress and prepare yourself to enter a more mediative state. \n\n### Finding the Right Cannabis Product\n\nAs with all physical activity, it is important to dose cannabis in a way that allows you to still very aware of your body and physical space. First, choose a method of administration that you enjoy and one that helps to relax you. If you prefer to smoke or vaporize, consume a small amount of cannabis. Non-psychoactive high CBD strains such as [ACDC](https://www.hellomd.com/marijuana-strains/acdc) or Electra Tsu are a great choice because they can provide you with a high that allows you to stay relaxed, but alert. \n\nSmall, low dose edibles are also a great choice for your yoga practice. Edibles, when taken in small doses, can provide a good, full body high. Edibles, however, it can be difficult to dose properly since many are packaged in large containers. It is always recommended to go low and slow until you understand your own tolerance level.\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58a38cc01689ad0017e8493b/embedded_images/58a38cc51689ad0017e8493d/Screen_Shot_2017-02-14_at_2.53.51_PM.png) \nSatori is a HelloMD favorite for cannabis micro dosing.\n\n[Satori bite-sized edibles](https://hellomd.com/brands/5859abb6d50c6c001176da5b) are a great choice for a pre-yoga treat that can bring you into a relaxed, but aware state for your yoga practice. Satori’s bite-sized edible products, which have been referred to as the “sativa of edibles” by our staff, come in 1mg, 3mg, and 10mg doses of THC in delicious chocolate covered treats. \n\nOur HelloMD recommendation for your yoga practice is Satori’s Wild Strawberry bites in Organic Milk chocolate. Some of the most prominent medical properties of cannabis are its pain fighting and anti-inflammatory abilities, but marijuana is also full of cannabinoids, terpenes and antioxidants that help promote health and wellness. Many proponents of cannabis also advocate that cannabis can be an important component for a healthy lifestyle.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### The Endocannabinoid System\n\nThe [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system) is one of the largest and most extensive systems found in the body. Endocannabinoid receptors assist the body in maintaining homeostasis by aiding in the bodies’ response to internal and external stimuli. Stimulating the endocannabinoid system through consuming cannabis can create balance, encourage creativity, and promote calm or alert feelings. \n\n### Creativity, Patience & Spirituality\n\nOne of the biggest advocates of using cannabis for wellness is Steve DeAngelo, the founder of Harborside Health Center in California. DeAngelo has long been a cannabis advocate and has continued to educate people on marijuana while running the largest medical marijuana dispensary in the world. In a [Harborside blog post](https://www.shopharborside.com/learn/wellness-not-intoxication.html#) by DeAngelo he says: \n\n\"Benefits [of cannabis] can include the ability to spark creativity, extend patience and promote self-examination; to awaken a sense of wonder and playfulness, an openness to spiritual experience; the ability to enhance the flavor of a meal, the sound of music, or the sensitivity of a lover’s touch; to open the mind; to bring poetry to language and spontaneity to a performer; to catalyze laughter, facilitate friendship, and bridge human differences.\" It seems much like eating healthy and exercising, cannabis can help round out your personal wellness regime. \n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS: THE NEW HEALTH FOOD TREND](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57d7299fb35dd8000b68ccaf/cannabis-the-new-health-food-trend)\n\nCannabis can improve wellness by creating a positive and relaxed environment where you can embrace and enjoy life to the fullest. Wellness is about all the feelings that are encompassed in an improved mindset and well being, rather than a direct medical benefit like reducing the sensation of pain. Cannabis can help you live in the moment and free yourself from the burdens of daily life. Sometimes it is hard to compartmentalize your feelings, especially during trying times, but cannabis can help aid you in freeing yourself from excess baggage, allowing you to relax and enjoy the events going on around you. \n\n### Enhancing Everyday Activities\n\nIn addition, cannabis can help enhance the activities that may be important to you. Similar to what DeAngelo alludes to, marijuana can help you listen to music in a way that allows you to fully experience the moment. You can feel the melodies as you listen intently to all of the words, rather than just enjoying music on a surface level. \n\nMarijuana can help you enjoy food and the process of cooking on a deeper level by allowing you to slow down and taste every element of your meal. Even for people who enjoy cooking, sometimes it can just be a matter of getting food on the table, but with the addition of marijuana it can turn back into a stress-relieving creative outlet. \n\nSometimes it is also hard to fully enter a centered state while participating in activities like yoga and meditation. One of the ways that cannabis can help improve your wellness is by clearing your mind of unnecessary thoughts and allowing you to experience the moment. Cannabis can help you deepen into stretches and postures while truly focusing on your breathing, instead of what you need to pick up at the grocery store after your class. This ability for internal focus is one of the truly amazing ways that cannabis can be used to promote wellness in your life. \n\n### Wellness vs. Intoxication\n\nUsing cannabis for wellness is far different than using cannabis for intoxication, meaning it's not just about getting stoned. When consuming cannabis for wellness it is crucial to consume it consciously, based on what part of your world you are attempting to elevate by using marijuana. It is important to understand the products and the form of cannabis you are using, and how that can help steer you towards or away from your desired goals. Using cannabis for wellness is not simply about achieving a certain feeling, but it is about using cannabis as a tool too enhance the world around you and bring you stimulation, balance, focus, and happiness. \n\n_____________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Outset focuses on healthy dried fruit edibles dosed in manageable 5mg to 10mg micro serving sizes. In his first post, Nick talks about his journey to health with edibles and his company’s dedication to wellness through yoga + cannabis classes.\r\n\r\n**My Journey into Edibles**\r\n\r\nIf you’ve been to a dispensary, you have seen them, the homemade plastic wrapped cannabis cookie or brownie edible sitting on the display table. They’re sugar laden, improperly labeled and seem designed to put you in a coma if you’re an edibles newbie. After having my own horrible edibles trip, I dreamed of creating a new breed of edibles designed to integrate with a normal every day lifestyle, without causing whole-day-couch-lock. My new-world edible would be micro-dosed, so you wouldn’t need to worry about eating too much. Lastly, my fantasy edible would be healthy, organic, and cater to an active lifestyle community of cannabis consumers. Living in San Francisco, I knew this community existed.\r\n\r\nMy personal mission became to create an all natural, vegan edible that could be easily dosed and enjoyed everyday. After enduring multiple sports injuries, which required numerous knee surgeries, I found myself using too many pharmaceutical prescriptions. Wanting to both alleviate pain as well as stay physically fit, I started looking for pain management alternatives. The result is Outset, the company I created that manufactures a high-quality, low dose (5-10mg per serving) dried fruit edible. I knew if I could support my own physical recovery and mental wellness, hopefully I could help others as well.\r\n\r\n**Cannabis & Yoga Pairing**\r\n\r\nFrom the Outset’s beginning, our team felt passionate about nurturing the mind, body and spirit. Early on we chose to focus on education within the community of wellness minded patients. Several months ago we launched Outset’s first yoga/cannabis focused event to educate patients on specific products and strains of cannabis that pair well with various yoga sequences. Yoga is an amazing practice that seeks to connect the body with the mind. The end goal is not only physical wellness but the relaxation of the mind as well as connection to your inner bliss. The pairing of yoga and cannabis might seem like a bizarre combination, but cannabis and yoga enthusiasts often are seeking the same body-mind-connection result. We believe a yoga/cannabis pairing can display how cannabis consumers can combine a meditative practice with a physical one, such as yoga, while using cannabis.\r\n\r\nFor our first yoga/cannabis event, our focus was on the combination of cannabis with yoga in a comfortable and nurturing environment. Our class, called ‘VinyaSativa’, is a vinyasa flow paired with sativa dominant products meant to energize patients while at the same time creating a sense of equilibrium. The events success led us to create a more relaxed and nurturing sequence. ‘Yindica’, our new restorative yin sequence class, is now on offer and our yogi patients are paired with indica dominant products, which have a more meditative effect overall. \r\n\r\n**Cannabis & Yoga: a San Francisco Vibe**\r\n\r\nOur classes have been extremely well attended and yogis have sung their praises regarding the physical and emotional wellness they feel after a yoga/cannabis pairing event. Many people comment that they feel a deeper relaxation and sense of mental clarity. Our journey has only just begun as we continue to grow our class offering in our continuing community outreach efforts. \r\n\r\nCannabis infused yoga classes hosted by Outset are held at [YogabeachSF](http://www.yogabeachsf.com/) studio in San Francisco, CA.
