High quantities of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are good for relieving severe pain that often accompany cancer and chemotherapy treatments, intense migraines and chronic back issues. The cannabinoid imparts an intense full body relaxation that melts away pain. \n\nSometimes the psychoactive effects are a good thing, too. Many folks treating anxiety, depression and other mood disorders report that THC helps them feel calm and happy. \n\nHere are eight cannabis strains you can try if you think a potent, high-THC strain may be what you need to quell pain and feel good. But of course, these are intense cannabis strains, so start low and go slow until you know how they affect you. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### 1. OG Kush Will Relax Body & Mind\n\nWith a THC content typically hovering around 20%, [OG Kush]( https://hellomd.com/strains/og-kush) will impart a relaxing body high—just what you need if you’re looking for pain relief. Some consumers mention that it also results in couch lock, so it’s best to take OG Kush when you don’t have too much to do and can just relax at home.\n\nOG Kush also imparts a nice cerebral high that uplifts mood. So, if you’re in the market for something that will relax your body and mellow out your mind, OG Kush could be a good place to start. Alzheimer’s patients, folks with gastrointestinal disorders and people suffering from nausea say OG Kush is their go-to cannabis strain. \n\n### 2. Granddaddy Purple Imparts Strong Sedative Effects\n\nThis strain has widely reported sedative effects, so [Granddaddy Purple](https://hellomd.com/strains/granddaddy-purple) would be a good choice for the evening or for a time when you don’t have any critical tasks to accomplish. Granddaddy Purple is hard-hitting all around, with cerebral but mostly body-altering effects. \n\nFor anyone who needs pain relief, this could be your strain; though start low and go slow on account of its nearly 20% THC content. Consumers report that Granddady Purple also stimulates appetite, quells pain and muscle spasms, and helps folks fall asleep. \n\n### 3. Chemdawg Magnifies Your Senses\n\nIf you’re looking for a heavy-hitting all-arounder, give [Chemdawg](https://hellomd.com/strains/chemdawg) a try. Known for inducing an intense body and head high, Chemdawg can feel overwhelming for some consumers. With a THC level around 20%, you’ll definitely feel all of your senses heightened; some report that the high amount of THC helps lift their mood. \n\nAs far as pain relief, this strain will probably get the job done. Though it’s strong, users describe its effects as uplifting and energizing, so Chemdawg is some people’s choice for a daytime cannabis strain. Medical marijuana patients suffering from chronic pain, PTSD and depression may want to give Chemdawg a shot.\n\n### 4. Sour Diesel Is a Fan Favorite for a Cerebral High\n\nEven if you’re new to cannabis, you may already know the name [Sour Diesel](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/sour-diesel). Many cannabis consumers have chosen this strain for decades because of its stimulating effects. Some liken a dose of Sour Diesel to drinking an espresso, so be aware that too much could leave you feeling jittery with an elevated heartbeat. But, if you take the right amount for you, you could end up feeling energized, ready to hit the town or accomplish all that you need to on a busy day.\n\nThough Sour Diesel features a THC level typically between 19–25%, the effects are generally cerebral instead of a body high. So, it may not be the best strain for someone seeking pain relief. Instead, if you’re looking to help ease conditions like stress and depression, Sour Diesel may be a good option.\n\n### 5. Get the Classic Marijuana High From GSC\n\nIf you’re in the market for a cannabis strain that will give you a fun, cerebral buzz combined with a body high to ease pain, [GSC](https://hellomd.com/strains/gsc) could be a good choice. Formerly known as Girl Scout Cookies, GSC was named as such because of its minty and spicy flavor profile.\n\nThough GSC is an indica-dominant hybrid, consumers mention that they can feel the strain’s sativa characteristics, too. On the body buzz side, it’s used to treat pain, nausea and insomnia because of its relaxing properties. On the mental side, its uplifting features are good for folks suffering from PTSD, anxiety and depression. The THC levels can reach up to 28%, so if you’re new to GSC, start with a very small dose and see how it affects you. \n\n### 6. Bruce Banner Is a Rare, Balanced Strain That Packs a Punch\n\nWell, a marijuana strain named after the Incredible Hulk’s alter ego says all that you need to know. [Bruce Banner](https://hellomd.com/strains/bruce-banner) buds are bright green and pack a punch with between 24–29% THC. If you can find this rare strain, it may be just what you’re looking for if you want a strong but balanced high. \n\nBruce Banner’s cerebral effects are said to be very euphoric, energetic and great for spurring creativity, while also providing pain relief. So, that makes Bruce Banner the cannabis strain of choice for patients looking to treat stress, chronic pain, ADD/ADHD and depression. Some negatives you could encounter if you take too big a dose range from dry mouth to paranoia. \n\nRELATED: [THE PROS & CONS OF PSYCHOACTIVE THC](https://hellomd.com/articles/the-pros-and-cons-of-psychoactive-thc)\n\n### 7. Ghost Train Haze is Energizing—If You Get the Dosage Right\n\nThis award-winning strain, with a THC level ranging between 23–28%, was named one of the most potent marijuana strains on earth by _High Times_ magazine. So first and foremost: Start with a tiny dose and wait a while to see how [Ghost Train Haze](https://hellomd.com/strains/ghost-train-haze) hits you before consuming more. In smaller amounts, this strain can be a useful tool for uplifting mood and feeling energized. A microdose of Ghost Train haze could be a great way to get ready for a party or other social outing.\n\nBut in larger doses, Ghost Train Haze has been known to impart psychedelic effects and some sedative characteristics. It could also induce paranoia if the dose is too large, and you’re especially prone to feeling anxious with heavy-hitting cannabis strains. But apart from the mental aspects of the strain, Ghost Train Haze also provides a nice body high. So, if you’re suffering from pain or need to relax your muscles, it could be a good strain to try. \n\n### 8. GG4 Can Help Ease Pain, but May Leave You Couch Locked\n\n[GG4](https://hellomd.com/strains/gg4), formerly known as Gorilla Glue #4, will provide a full-body buzz that’s effective for easing depression as well as physical pain, like migraines. While the cerebral effects have been reported to be energizing and stimulating, the body high is described as more sedative. So, GG4 would be a good choice for an evening in—when you can relax and don’t have much to do, as opposed to before a night out or when you have lots to get done.\n\nComing in at typically 18–25% THC, GG4 is a fan favorite for a reason: After consuming, anything bothering you mentally or physically tends to melt away. But be aware that the strain was originally named after the glue not only because the buds can be sticky, but because it can also result in you sticking to your sofa for hours. \n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Putting on your favorite songs after consuming some marijuana can be an almost spiritual experience. Time seems to slow down, the music fully captures your attention and everything just sounds so good. \n\nI’ve had many positive experiences listening to music while enjoying cannabis, but my favorites have been when the music was live. Listening to live music can be a fun, relaxing and enjoyable way to spend free time with friends. But listening to live music after taking marijuana brings it to another level entirely. And there are actually some scientific explanations about why music seems so much richer after consuming cannabis.\n\nCurious about trying cannabis for your next live music experience? We’ve got a few recommendations on what kind of marijuana to try before your favorite artist’s next performance. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Why Cannabis Makes Music So Enjoyable\n\nMarijuana consumers tend to report an increase in enjoyment with listening to music and playing it, too. But how does cannabis make music so entertaining? Scientists have explored this question, and they have a few ideas about what’s going on:\n\n* **Cannabis slows perception of time for musicians:** One of the major factors that researchers believe affects our enjoyment of music—especially for the musicians themselves—is how we perceive time. Interestingly, cannabis can actually speed up certain mental processes, leading to a relative slowing down of time. In one study, [cannabis consumers perceived a 15-second time interval as 16.7 seconds](https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF00402390). Some believe this helps musicians improvise, because they have more subjective time to figure out their next moves. \n\n* **Marijuana increases focus and attention:** For those listening to music, time slowing down allows them to perceive more of the music with more focus and attention. “When your time perception changes, your focus of attention changes,” says Jorg Fachner, a researcher studying the phenomena. “You might have an enhanced ability to select certain information and disregard other information, which could help distinguish the individual sounds a bit more intensively.” \n\n>This can leave the music seeming more clear, clean and distinct than it would otherwise. And this may enhance enjoyment. Previous research showed that [marijuana could also cause noises to seem louder](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02791072.1978.10471870), an effect that may also increase our attention to music.\n\n>In Fachner’s research, he saw that the [areas of the brain that lit up in music-listening cannabis consumers were the same areas stimulated in gifted mathematicians solving complex math problems](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1300/J175v02n02_02). Cannabis can help us to focus more on the intricacies and details of the music, while using less mental energy to do so. \n\nRELATED: [STAFF PICKS: 8 ALBUMS TO LISTEN TO WHEN YOU’RE TOO HIGH](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b58dc91a1805500087db9bd/staff-picks-8-albums-to-listen-to-when-youre-too-high)\n\n* **Cannabis keeps your mind in the moment:** Fachner also explains that those listening to music on cannabis tend to stay in the present moment. With marijuana, it can become temporarily challenging to integrate past, present and future memories. This tends to make it easier for those consuming the plant to stay firmly in the present moment, focused on enjoying those tunes. \n\n* **Much music has been made by marijuana consumers:** Some argue that cannabis makes music more enjoyable because [a lot of music has been made by cannabis consumers](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5888177429f44d000c1d76ff/why-does-music-sound-better-with-marijuana). Taking cannabis before listening can help people get into the mindset of the musicians, and so may help the listener have more of a connection with the music. \n\n### Cannabis for Concerts: What to Try\n\nWhatever kind of music you love, cannabis can make it even more enjoyable. Maybe you’ve pulled one too many all-nighters, your workload has doubled, or you just haven’t had enough to eat. All of these things can set off a tension headache as can anxiety, depression, and even poor posture or tight muscles in your head, neck and shoulders. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nAs it happens, [cannabis has been used to treat headaches](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5436334/) dating back as far as the second millennium BCE. It was an established headache remedy in the U.S. from 1839 until 1937, when the government made the plant illegal. During this time, distinguished doctors who touted cannabis’s effectiveness included Silas Weir Mitchell, then president of the NY Neurological Society, and William Gowers, considered a founding father of modern neurology.\n\nFast forward to today, and cannabis is still illegal at the federal level, making peer-reviewed, clinical studies on the plant’s efficacy extremely challenging. That said, a number of preliminary studies along with plenty of anecdotal evidence point to marijuana as a good option for relieving headaches—not to mention its various triggers.\n\nFollowing are our team’s go-to cannabis strains for easing the pain in their noggin.\n\n### 1. OG Kush\n\n![OG Kush cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-572c35a3-1df9-41f4-9069-005388241a02/original.jpg)\n\n**Dmitry B., marketing videographer/editor:** “My favorite cannabis strain to help with tension headaches is OG Kush because it comes on fast and is very cerebral. It contains high levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) for effective pain relief. So, the combination of potency, rapid onset and the cerebral high of OG Kush basically makes it possible for me to combat any headache.\n\n“OG Kush has a very distinct aroma and smell. OG Kush tastes really fruity, punchy. You can definitely taste the diesel in there.\n\n“When it comes to OG Kush, don't overdo it. I’d suggest consuming OG Kush at the end of the day. And don't overmedicate because it could have the reverse effect and make the headache flare up again. Instead, go low and slow. Take one to three puffs, depending on your tolerance level, and see how you feel.”\n\n### 2. Jack Herer\n\n![Jack Herer cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-91dbcca4-f11c-4dd3-914a-e0abaff4ec06/original.jpg)\n\n**Ryan G., customer service lead:** “I really enjoy Jack Herer, because it's very fast-acting and an effective pain reliever. This is one of the more reliable marijuana strains. It's not only uplifting and energetic, but because it's a sativa, it allows me to go about my day and do things that I need to get done. I don't feel couch-locked as I would if I took an indica.\n\n“When I smoke Jack Herer, it takes effect within 10 minutes. So, if you smoke it or use a flower vaporizer, I find that it tends to be more effective—stronger and heavier—than using an oil cartridge. \n\n“Jack Herer, which tastes and smells very piney with notes of citrus, is a cannabis strain that I’d recommend for all experience levels. Of course, if you're a novice user, you should go slow and take care, because certain Jack Herer strains are a little bit on the potent side.”\n\n### 3. Chemdawg\n\n![Chemdawg cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-613667ac-aa23-4db7-9421-b14acbb752d7/original.jpg)\n\n**Veronica B, customer service specialist:** “I’ve been very fortunate in that I don’t experience headaches very frequently. However, if the pain starts pounding in my head, I like to turn to an indica-dominant strain to alleviate the symptoms. Chemdawg is the perfect cannabis strain for me as it provides strong cerebral effects, but also a full body relaxation to distract me from my headache.\n\n“Chemdawg has a gasoline smell, with flavors that are earthy, woody, reminiscent of pine. This is a potent strain, so novice cannabis consumers should start with a small amount.\n\n“Upon consumption, you can expect to feel relaxed from head to toe. Depending on the patient, Chemdawg can be a great choice for day or night. In any case, the headaches will no longer be a nuisance.”\n\n### 4. Harlequin\n\n![Harlequin cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-1da9487e-143e-4339-8139-cec1ae8975bc/original.jpg)\n\n**Kevin P., customer service specialist:** “I tend to prefer CBD-rich (cannabidiol-rich) strains, specifically Harlequin when I'm experiencing headaches—and I’m a seasoned cannabis user, so I’m comfortable with THC.\n\n“Harlequin is unique for two different reasons. First, it's almost always at 5:2 or more commonly a 3:1 ratio, meaning three-parts CBD to one-part THC. It's also sativa dominant with that little bit of THC that's in there.\n\n“When I have a headache, I’m trying to relieve the pain and also that foggy feeling that I get with a headache. So, something like a 3:1 has just enough CBD to relieve the pain, with just enough THC to amplify that painkilling ability. But it’s also just enough THC to distract from the headache without leaving me stoned.\n\n“When I experience a headache, I don't burn Harlequin. Because the last thing I want to do is be coughing all of the time, since that amplifies the pain in my head. So, I use a Pax device. I'll grind up the flower and then vaporize it, so it's a lot smoother. It's a lot easier to medicate that way.\n\n“In terms of taste and smell, you definitely get some earthiness and sweetness with Harlequin. I want to say that there's a little bit of mango in it, but it really does depend on the batch.”\n\n### 5. Gelato\n\n![Gelato cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-1d984c1e-6a20-40ef-94fb-d43ce5e0a900/original.jpg)\n\n**Nik S., customer service specialist:** “My favorite marijuana strain to relieve tension headaches is Gelato because of the hybrid effect that it provides. Gelato provides good feelings; it's not such a heavy couch-locker, and it's going to also give you those euphoric feelings. \n\n“And it tastes like gelato. It takes very creamy depending on the phenotype. There's the #25, #33, #41, #45—those are the popular ones. And the 25, 33 and also the 45 are going to taste very creamy. The 41 is going to have that creamy taste as well, but also a little bit of like kind of a nutty taste as well. It's very flavorful.\n\n“When Gelato first takes effect, it brings on the feeling of an indica: You may feel kind of slow at first. But then, it starts to balance out with the sativa effects. It kills the pain. In terms of how much to consume, I think it just depends on the person and how great your pain is.\n\nThis cannabis strain isn’t for beginners. It’s definitely for the more experienced consumer. If a novice user wanted to try it, you may be able to find lighter versions of Gelato. There may be some indoor varieties that may not be grown to yield as much THC.”\n\n### 6. ACDC\n\n![ACDC cannabis strain](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-1b57c4c3-8a42-4cda-b862-717b76986055/original.jpg)\n\n**Bart S., customer service specialist:** “With tension headaches, I would do a high-CBD cannabis strain likeACDC. And I’d do that with an indica like Granddaddy Purple. Granddaddy Purple—really almost any indica strain—helps me when I have a migraine. I prefer Granddaddy Purple, because of the taste and flavor, which is like a piney berry. It puts me to sleep, and I’ll wake up without a migraine.\n\n“But for tension headaches, ACDC, which has a 3:1 ratio of CBD to THC, is a good choice. I’d dab it, because it’s a lot stronger; as a dab, it’s a more concentrated form of cannabis. When I have a tension headache, I want to take care of it quickly. I don’t really want to take the chance of smoking a bowl and having it not work. I want to attack the headache right away.”\n\nPhoto credits: [Anh Nguyen](https://unsplash.com/@pwign) (main image); [Nickel Bag of Funk](https://www.flickr.com/photos/nickel_bag_of_funk/) (OG Kush)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/articles/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. They include: \n\n### 1. Chemdawg\n\n![Chemdawg](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-6eb1cb3b-b7b3-40b2-9a21-d30235b2b211/original.png)\n\n[Chemdawg](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cc81ad520d60009f4f4a7/chemdawg) is a mysterious, stinky hybrid that packs a punch mentally and physically. BeKind’s Chemdawg flowers clock in at 23.7% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), so beginners and those who are sensitive to THC should practice caution. More experienced users are in for a ride—expect stimulating conversations, heightened senses and tingling body sensations. The Chemdawg high can last for quite some time. But as it winds down, consumers are in for a good night’s sleep or a rejuvenating afternoon nap. \n\nMedical marijuana patients looking for relief from pain, PTSD, anxiety or depression could benefit from this strain’s powerful effects on the body and mind. \n\n### 2. OG Kush\n\n![OG Kush](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-468d7829-e5bf-4d9d-b7cf-eec6fef987b4/original.png)\n\nA California classic, [OG Kush](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cce66d520d60009f4f4ab/og-kush) combines a heavy, yet blissful cerebral high with body-melting physical effects that often lead to couch lock. BeKind’s OG Kush flowers test at 22.1%. Overall, OG Kush is great option if you’re looking for a way to unwind for the night. A favorite in the medical marijuana community, OG Kush is often used to combat nausea, gastrointestinal distress, pain and loss of appetite, to name a few. \n\n### 3. Blue Dream\n\n![Blue Dream](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-aaf20841-9e78-4402-a8db-5c22b5b2c4fc/original.png)\n\nArguably one of the most popular strains in existence today, [Blue Dream]( https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a70be4e6c30440008cafd14/blue-dream) is an ideal hybrid and a modern classic. Equal parts relaxing and stimulating, consumers can expect a long-lasting high from this well-balanced strain, which combines the mellow effects of Blueberry and cerebral qualities of Haze. BeKind’s Blue Dream flowers test at 23.8%, so while this cannabis strain is often touted as a good option for newbies, those sensitive to THC should temper their dosing when using this particular flower.\n\nBlue Dream is crowd-pleaser among both the recreational and medical marijuana community. It’s a suitable strain for many daytime activities, like socializing with friends, but can also be used to combat many types of pain like those stemming from fibromyalgia, arthritis and menstrual issues. \n\n### 4. Sour Diesel\n\n![Sour Diesel](https://hellomd-development.s3.amazonaws.com/markdown-image-injector-d5321c54-6a7d-4b37-9938-531c44f4e367/original.png)\n\nAn easily recognizable strain—even to those unfamiliar with cannabis, [Sour Diesel]( https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cd299d520d60009f4f4ae/sour-diesel) boasts a slew of pop-culture references and even its own Wikipedia page. This stinky sativa hybrid has a pungent, fuel-like aroma and is often compared to strong cup of coffee. BeKind’s Sour Diesel flowers clock in at 20.7% THC—consumers can expect cerebral effects that may spark conversation and creativity. \n\nMedical marijuana consumers enjoy this strain for the calm mental focus it provides, making it an appropriate choice for those seeking relief from depression, anxiety, stress and ADD/ADHD. Sour Diesel’s effects tend to be more mentally inclined, so those looking for pain relief may want to seek out a different strain. \n\nMain photo credit: [Daria Lipova](https://www.flickr.com/people/daria_lipova/)\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Between all of the social and family obligations, work parties, budgeting for gifts, dark nights and preparing for the beginning of a new year, it can seem like you won’t ever be able to relax. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM]( https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\n### Opt Outside on Black Friday
\n\nMany people are carving out some much-needed leisure time during the holiday season by skipping the increasingly cutthroat Black Friday sales. Instead, they’re choosing to “Opt Outside” for Black Friday, a campaign started three years ago by outdoor recreation brand REI. The idea behind Opt Outside is to encourage people not to participate in Black Friday—the department stores, fluorescent lights and crowded parking lots full of frustrated people—and instead go outside and experience the benefits of fresh air, sunshine and physical movement.\n\n### Add Marijuana to Your Opt Outside Adventure\n\nSpending time outside in nature is [proven to have a number of benefits](http://www.businessinsider.com/scientific-benefits-of-nature-outdoors-2016-4/#4-reduc ed-inflammation-4) from reducing stress and increasing mental focus to improving concentration and boosting creativity. Incorporating cannabis into your Opt Outside day can enhance your experience and add additional benefits as marijuana can help relieve pain and inflammation, as well as combat depression, anxiety and stress. \n\nIf you’re looking for some ideas to Opt Outside with cannabis this upcoming Black Friday, check out our suggestions—and have a great time in the great outdoors. \n\n### Try a Hike With an Uplifting Sativa
\n\nGet your blood pumping with a hike paired with an energizing sativa strain like [Durban Poison](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cb16cd520d60009f4f4a3) or [Amnesia Haze](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5ac2b72f1bb06d0008614143). A sativa strain won’t make you feel sleepy or relax you so much that you have second thoughts about finishing your route. Consider taking a vape pen with you, so you can take a puff here and there without worrying about lighting up while you’re walking—plus it’s not a fire hazard like a joint is.\n\n### Take the Weekend to Go Cannabis Camping
\n\nStretch your Opt Outside activity into a weekend-long camping adventure with friends and family. Because you’ll have a few days to relax, you’ll have plenty of time to incorporate cannabis in whatever way feels best to you. Kick back in the tent with a compact and easily portable sublingual strip to help you sleep at night, add the recommended dose of a sativa cannabis-infused tincture to your morning coffee or keep some edibles handy. \n\nRELATED: [INDICA OR SATIVA? You can make your own edibles using our [cannabutter recipe](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56b27915fe98a1000c000243/diy-recipe-cannabutter-or-cannabis-butter), or stop by a dispensary and pick up some ready-made [snacks](https://www.hellomd.com/biz/5787f6e054d3a610003b8948/kiva-confections/our-story) or drinks to enjoy your day. \n\n### Take a Marijuana Hybrid Strain on Your Bike Ride
\n\nFor a short ride around your neighborhood, taking a few puffs of a balancing hybrid strain like Mango Haze or Green Crack before you head out the door will give you a little bit of calm and can also help prevent any joint pain that might follow. For a longer bike ride, try taking a vape pen with you or nibble on an edible like these banana crisps to help your pleasant experience last for the duration of your journey. \n\n### Strains like Jack Herer Are Great for Bird Watching
\n\nSlow things down and learn more about nature by going outside anywhere there may be lots of birds. Find a forest area, a park with lots of trees or even your own backyard to sit back, relax and let the adventure come to you. Pair bird watching with a marijuana strain like Jack Herer or Sour Diesel that will help you focus and keep you alert yet relaxed. \n\nEven if you’re not sure about adding marijuana to your Opt Outside activities, you can always add cannabis to your cool-down routine afterwards. And everyone has their way of dealing with it—maybe you go for a bike ride, take your dog for a walk, kick back with a good book or wind down with your favorite TV show. But did you know that cannabis may be one of the best stress relievers out there?\n\nThat’s because marijuana contains cannabinoids that interact with our endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is made up of receptors responsible for releasing hormones like endorphins that create a sense of euphoria and relaxation. The ECS also helps keep our bodies balanced and if we’re in balance and good health, we’re less likely to experience the negative effects of stress. \n\nHere are the top three questions about cannabis and stress from our [Answers](https://www.hellomdcom/answers) platform. Members of our community including doctors and experienced cannabis consumers supplied the answers—answers that we hope you find valuable. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Q: What is the best product for stress?\n\nAnswer: @veronicab Hi there! Cannabis is an excellent stress-buster. Many marijuana products will be able to assist you with stress-relief, but check out our articles that discuss eliminating stress with cannabis.\n\n### Q: I have a lot of stress and anxiety and wonder if OG Kush may be a good strain to try for this?\n\nAnswer: drolson If you’ve never tried OG Kush, I would caution you starting with that strain. To start, I think it's wise to take CBD cannabis to calm the stress and anxiety and to keep the CBD levels steady, then you can add OG Kush. Since OG Kush is high in THC and low in CBD, your stress may improve but you could be vulnerable to anxiety. You don’t want to do a high dose of CBD close to the time you take your OG Kush or you will end up with high CBD and high THC, potentially making you go to sleep.\n\nOG Kush does not have a lot of negative effects, mostly it is uplifting, relaxing and can even make you happy. But consider having some drops of CBD cannabis on hand so if you experience anxiety you can put one or two drops CBD tincture under your tongue for a calming effect. If your body is cannabis friendly, you could just try the OG Kush as long as you have drops of CBD available for buffering. \n\nGood luck in your experiment and remember any bad experience will wear off in a couple hours. Once you know how your body responds to CBD as well as THC, you will be in control.\n\n### Q: Best strain for daytime use?\n**_I use cannabis for stress and anxiety relief, but do not like feeling \"sleepy\" during the day. What strain would be best for mid-day use?_**\n\nAnswer: @mark Look for any strain in the sativa category, as these are better for daytime use. There are many to choose from and so your choice is more likely to depend what is available to you at your local dispensary.\n\nThere are a good selection of strains and their effects listed in the HelloMD Products section. Often, one of those qualities is the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content found in a strain—typically, the higher the THC content, the more popular the cannabis strain. Most of the five most popular marijuana strains we have selected are sativa strains. Sativas are known to provide an uplifting and energetic quality as compared to indica strains, which tend to be more calming and sedative. \n\nThe most popular marijuana strains are widely produced and sold in various states where cannabis consumption is legal. All of these marijuana strains are used for their medicinal properties, but are also used recreationally as well. We consider these classic marijuana strains, which are often recognized by name even by non-cannabis consumers.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThe five most popular marijuana strains are Blue Dream, Jack Herer, Cannatonic, Sour Diesel and OG Kush. \n\n### Popular Marijuana Strain #1: Blue Dream\n\n![Popular marijuana strain: Blue Dream](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5817b52aeab4e6000a28b544/embedded_images/5817b52eeab4e6000a28b545/Screen_Shot_2016-10-31_at_1.54.09_PM.png) \n\n[Blue Dream](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a70be4e6c30440008cafd14/blue-dream) is arguably the most popular strain of marijuana in the country. It’s [estimated that 80% of people in the U.S. will experience some kind of back pain](http://www.thegoodbody.com/back-pain-statistics/) over the course of their lifetime. Lower back pain is the most common with 31 million Americans experiencing it at any given time. \n\nAnd so it comes as no surprise that many Americans want to know what’s best for back pain. In many cases, doctors prescribe prescription opioid painkillers, which are intended for short-term use. These opioids can help with back pain, but they come with a litany of side effects such as constipation and nausea. As well, they are highly addictive. Meanwhile, over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) can also bring on a host of issues such as stomach ulcers, liver or kidney problems and high blood pressure.\n\n### Three Major Kinds of Back Pain\n\nBack pain normally falls within three major categories: axial, referred and radicular pain. \n\n* **Axial pain**, which is also called mechanical pain, can vary greatly based on the case; it can be dull or sharp and can exist constantly or come and go. The most common source of axial back pain is muscle strain, which occurs when muscles are torn or stretched to an extreme. \n\n* **Referred pain** is often a dull and achy pain that tends to move around the back and body. Referred pain, which can vary in intensity, occurs away from the direct source of the pain. For example, referred pain can occur in the hips and thighs when there’s a problem like degenerative disc disease in the lower back. \n\n* You may know radicular pain by another name: **sciatica**. It’s a deep and intense pain that follows nerve pathways into your extremities, and it can lead to numbness and weakness. Radicular pain is often caused by inflammation, compression or an injury, usually to the root of the spinal nerve. \n\n### Studies Show Marijuana Can Help With Back Pain\n\nWondering what can help with back pain? Following are two studies that point to marijuana as being helpful with reducing chronic pain, which can of course include back pain.\n\nA study published in the _Canadian Medical Association Journal_ found that [cannabis could help reduce chronic pain in men and women](http://www.webmd.com/pain-management/news/20100830/marijuana-relieves-chronic-pain-research-show). The subjects were administered three different marijuana potencies at different times during the study. The strengths were rotated with a placebo, and none of the subjects knew what they were taking at any given point during the study. Pain was measured by patients on a 10-point pain scale.\n\nThere was an average of a one-point reduction in pain by patients who took the highest potency of cannabis. Though these results are modest, they were still considered successful because most strains of marijuana are much more potent in their percentage of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). \n\nAnother study in December 2014 by the [College of Family Physicians of Canada recommended that patients with chronic pain smoke cannabis](https://www.medicaljane.com/2014/12/31/physicians-organization-in-canada-releases-guidelines-for-prescribing-medical-cannabis-for-pain/). It stated that patients with severe neuropathic pain conditions could find relief in cannabis if they hadn’t had adequate responses to other medications. \n\nThe paper also stated that the recommended maximum dose of cannabis that a patient should consume in one day is one inhalation, four times a day, which is roughly 400 mg a day of 9% THC cannabis. Though the guidelines are fairly vague, it does back up anecdotal evidence that higher-THC consumption is best for chronic pain. \n\n### Best Marijuana Strains for Back Pain\n\nEach cannabis strain works differently for everyone, but often THC-heavy strains are best to combat pain. Don’t discount cannabidiol (CBD) though, as it’s extremely helpful at reducing inflammation, which could also help decrease your back pain. \n\nIt’s also important to be aware that higher-percentage THC strains have more psychoactive effects. Some people find it useful to take a strain lower in THC during the day and then something higher in THC in the evening, right before bedtime. The key is finding which marijuana strains, consumption method and dosage work best in easing your back pain.\n\nHere are some of our top picks of marijuana strains that have been shown to be effective at relieving back pain.\n\n* **[Headband](https://hellomd.com/strains/headband)** is a hybrid of OG Kush and Sour Diesel. This particular marijuana strain contains 20–27% THC and less than 1% CBD. Headband is particularly helpful at easing muscle strains and relieving general pain. It’s also known for its long-lasting effects, though keep in mind that it’s a very potent strain. \n\n* **Candyland** is a sativa-dominant hybrid of Granddaddy Purple and Bay Platinum Cookies. Candyland is effective at reducing pain, including back pain, and muscle tension with uplifting and stimulating side effects. Candyland is also known to relieve stress and fatigue. Also a potent strain, it has high levels of THC, at roughly 24%, and it has about 1% of both CBD and CBN. \n\n* **[OG Kush](https://hellomd.com/strains/og-kush)** is indica-dominant and is known for its high levels of THC. OG Kush is helpful at relieving back pain and muscle spasms. It has about 23% THC and only about 1% CBD. OG Kush is also one of the more psychoactive strains of cannabis on the market. \n\n* **[Bubba Kush](https://hellomd.com/strains/bubba-kush)** is an indica with 14–22% THC and 0.06–0.1% CBD. Bubba Kush is believed to be a hybrid of Northern Lights and OG Kush through an accidental pollination. Bubba Kush is helpful at easing muscle tension, including the kind associated with back pain, and decreasing stress. \n\n* **Skywalker OG** is an indica-dominant hybrid of Skywalker and OG Kush. Skywalker OG is known for its effectiveness at reducing pain symptoms and decreasing physical limitations caused by pain. \n\n* **[ACDC](https://hellomd.com/strains/acdc)** is a sativa-dominant hybrid that’s has a CBD:THC ratio of 20:1. This cannabis strain has about 16–24% CBD and just 0.4–1.2% THC. ACDC is particularly helpful in reducing back pain with no psychoactive side effects. \n\nIf you’re still not sure which marijuana strain could help you with your back pain, head over to our [Answers page](https://www.hellomd.com/answers).
