Shingles is a remnant from this virus that lays dormant in the body and reactivates later in life. It causes a painful rash that usually appears on the torso, sometimes progressing into blisters and boils. Shingles can be extremely painful and causes a variety of sensations from burning to tingling to numbness. It also causes other symptoms like sensitivity, fever, headache, and fatigue. Long term pain can also persist, even after the rash has cleared from the body. \n\nShingles attacks the nerve cells, making it extremely hard to get relief from pain. Shingles can also block certain receptors that usually allow people to get relief from medications like non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and opioids. Due to the inability for the receptors to be properly targeted by these medications, doses prescribed for people with shingles are often higher. High doses of pain relieving products like opioids can cause addiction and dependence, often doing more harm than good. \n\n### Cannabis Provides Relief\n\nEndocannabinoid receptors are found all over the body, so they are not blocked in the same way as other receptors, allowing for cannabis to provide pain relief in a way other products cannot. Cannabis also has neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties that can greatly reduce the pain and long-term effects caused by shingles. [A 2011 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3055736/) published in the journal _Neuropsychopharmacology_ found that cannabis had multifaceted nuero-protective effects. The study, which used animal models, found that this quality of cannabis was caused by the activation of CB1 receptors that helped prevent damage to nerves. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nCannabis is known for its effective analgesic qualities, especially in relation to neuropathic pain, which is the kind of pain most often caused by shingles. Neuropathic pain, which often doesn’t react to traditional pain relieving pharmaceuticals, can be greatly aided by THC, according to a [2009 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=shingles+and+cannabinoids) from _Neurotherapeutics_. A [2015 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25635955) from the _Journal of Oral and Facial Pain and Headache_ also showed that cannabinoids were effective at relieving neuropathic pain that did not respond to other treatments. The study was a review of various randomized placebo-controlled studies conducted starting in the 1950s, which all added support to the conclusion made by the review. The review also noted an overall improvement of sleep, nausea, anxiety, and appetite by patients who consumed cannabis in the studies. \n\n### Topicals: A Great Option\n\nTopical cannabis products are a great choice for people with shingles. Shingles pain is often located in specific areas, making it a great option for being targeted by topical cannabis medications. Cannabis topicals can come in the form of salves, creams, balms, or oils and they are absorbed through the skin. The topical products bond to CB2 receptors when they are absorbed into the skin and provide localized pain relief. There are many topicals on the market today, some favorites in California are Sweet ReLeaf, Flower Power and Xternal. \n\nTHC-infused topicals provide pain relieving properties without being psychoactive because they are not absorbed into the blood stream. CBD infused topical products can also provide people with anti-inflammatory medication to help decrease inflammation that causes pain and physical rashes on the body. Medical cannabis, no matter the form, is a great choice to help people with shingles find relief from their pain and suffering. \n\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Let’s face it, carrying around cannabis flower is not always convenient and it is never what I might call discreet. In addition, many people look to find cannabis products that might carry the benefits of smoking, but they would prefer not to smoke at all. It seems this is especially true of those that may be new to cannabis as well as the senior community. For these reasons, the cannabis marketplace has been exploding with a wide variety of new products that explore a plethora of delivery mediums. One product which recently came to my attention is a cannabis lozenge by Strovia.\n\nStrovia solely focuses on the creation of lozenges and offers 11 different products with four different ratios: THC rich, CBD rich, Balanced 1:1 and “Just CBD”. When the cannabinoids CBD and THC are combined, patients benefit from the synergistic healing action of THC and CBD. There is also a variety of potency anywhere from 2mg - 32mg, which provides enough variety for the varying needs of patients. Doug of Strovia commented on dosing saying, “In plant-based medicine, each person responds differently to identical doses. Some people achieve a substantial benefit from a micro dose. However, they may encounter that same benefit at the low, standard or high potency doses.” \n\nThe lozenges combine familiar flavors such as echinacea, ginger and lemongrass, apple, mango, honey and even pomegranate. Strovia also touts their lozenges to be “infused with premium cannabis, cleanly extracted, lab tested and third party verified for both dose accuracy and purity.” \n\n### Delivery Method Matters\n\nIf your familiar with cannabis, you may know that different methods of administration yield different results. Lozenges are interesting in that the membrane of the mouth allows for the infusion of cannabis directly into the bloodstream, and quickly. This is different than a swallowed edible, in that the cannabis is metabolized by the liver and may be more susceptible to stomach acids and other digestive enzymes that can decrease the potency of the THC and CBD.   \n\nDoug from Strovia explained that “absorption through the oral mucosa is simply the most effective delivery method for reaching the [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5751cbd970410e000b00003a/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system). But more than that, lozenges are easier to administer to pediatric and geriatric patients as well as patients who have difficulty swallowing or holding down food down.”\n\nRELATED: [BLOOM FARMS CBD CARTRIDGE REVIEW](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57ba49a00bc21c000b6472c3/bloom-farms-cbd-cartridge-review)\n\nStrovia was interesting enough to us at HelloMD that we decided to do a road test with a few members of our staff. Our staff selected flavors, ratios and potency that appealed to them and below you can read what they had to say. If you would like to purchase Strovia, the lozenges are available for delivery throughout California through True Farma.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\n### HelloMD Strovia Reviews \n\nBart - HelloMD Staff,\nStrovia Lemon Honey Echinacea,\n20mg THC Rich & 10mg THC Rich\n\n“The first 20mg I took was at a holiday party and it provided just the right amount of \"background music\" that kept me engaged in conversation, entertained, but not too intoxicated to function. I felt relaxed and social. At the same time and my appetite was stimulated enough to enjoy the dinner and I found the lozenge to be delicious with just enough of sweet from the honey.\n\nThe second time I took the 10mg dose and it was after a particularly long day of work and I found it was just enough to take the edge off. In this instance it was like the background music was turned down to a whisper. This product is wonderful if you need to relax, especially for someone like me where I spend the majority of my time talking on the phone. I also found the soothing effects of the honey on my throat after a day of speaking, which is a wonderful effect of this lozenge.”\n\n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nVeronica - HelloMD Staff,\nStrovia Pomegranate Antioxidant,\nTHC Rich Strovia - 5:1 THC: CBD\n\nOne day last week after work, I decided to open up my new Strovia lozenge and it immediately reminded me of a jolly rancher. I popped it in my mouth and a lovely, strong flavor of pomegranate was what was immediately evident. After a few more minutes I detected a mild cannabis taste, which is fine for me. However, there was a cannabis after taste, particularly on the roof of my mouth, but a glass of water made it imperceptible.\n\nThe effects of the Strovia kicked in pretty quickly. What I immediately noticed was that I had less pain in my right knee, and I was able to perform deep squats and return to standing without struggle. My stress levels were reduced and my mood improved throughout the evening, and I was able to fall asleep right away. I enjoyed a restful night’s sleep without interruption, and woke up feeling refreshed.”\n______________________________________________________________________\n\nChris - HelloMD Staff,\nStrovia Lemon Honey Echinacea,\n20mg THC Rich\n\n“The Honey Lemon Echinacea lozenge is a nice switch from the traditional edible. The lozenge delivery is reminiscent of a Ricola, both in taste and overall experience, which I found incredibly pleasant. The onset of the 20 mg of THC was fast, but not in an overwhelming way. As a high tolerance user, I found the the high to be immediate but sustained over the course of several hours, which is unusual for me with this dosage, which I consider on the lower side. The lozenge itself is pretty big, so if you’re not a fan of hard candy, you may want to drop it in a cup of tea to dissolve as an alternative.”\n\n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nRyan - HelloMD Staff,\nStrovia Pomegranate Antioxidant,\n10mg CBD Rich\n\n\"I decided to try the Strovia at my work desk to see the impact of a CBD edible on my workflow. Anxiety can add a lot of noise to your thought processes and CBD clears this up for me. As a result, I am able to focus much better at the tasks at hand, in combination with fostering a relaxed and well adjusted mood. \n\nThe lozenge dissolved slowly and the effects also came on so slowly. I barely noticed a change in my own affect, a hallmark of a great CBD edible. I found that the rest of the day very went well for me, conversations came much more smoothly and I was able to focus on what I wanted to when I wanted to. I am looking forward to buying my own Strovia and repeating the experience. I hate to be a fanboy, but I really really enjoyed trying the Strovia 10mg CBD lozenge.\"\n\n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. She is a Mom, cannabis lover and Director of Marketing at Alchemy by Dark Heart, an extremely popular vape company that combines \"The perfect blend for wellness.\" Happy holiday reading!\r\n\r\n### Holiday Cheer\r\n\r\nIt was Thanksgiving and my family was gathered at my Grandmother’s house anticipating our favorite meal of the year. Some of us were clinking glasses of rum and wine and catching up on the details of our lives. My younger cousins were huddled in the living room over a shared iPad screen playing Angry Birds. My uncles were convened in the living room, eyes fixed on the TV as the Steelers triumphed over the Colts. \r\n\r\nMy mother raised her glass and asked the family to join her in a toast. Everyone got up (with the exception of the kids). It was at that moment I noticed my uncle, still sitting in one of the recliners in the living room. Holding up a glass, with a look of embarrassment on his face I’d never seen before. I asked him later why he didn’t join us and he said very frankly, “Sciatica. It’s getting worse.” \r\n\r\n### Our Holiday Gift Guide\r\n\r\nThis year marks the first year in California that [marijuana consumption](http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/news/california-passes-recreational-marijuana-bill-prop-64-w448877) is legal for recreational use. So this year, instead of the typical bargain bin flannel pajamas and iTunes gift certificates, I’m going to gift my favorite people with something that will impact their wellness as well as their happiness. \r\n\r\nCheck out my suggestions for giving the gift of green this year to (almost) everyone on your list!\r\n\r\n### The Uncle With Nerve Pain\r\n\r\nEveryone has that uncle. He’s always manning the BBQ, he’s always got a dad joke on hand. Lately you’ve noticed him sitting more things out than usual and if pain is the reason - consider gifting him with something he likely wouldn’t get himself. Perhaps he’s a little on the conservative side or on the fence about cannabis smokables. \r\n\r\nTry asking your local dispensary about cannabis topicals. The beauty of cannabis topicals is that despite usually being very potent and chock-full of THC and CBD - they don’t cause a high. Your uncle can rub a little cannabis cream on his sore areas and no one will be the wiser - except you. His new favorite relative.\r\n\r\n### The Zen Best Friend\r\n\r\nHe wakes up in the morning in full sun salutation and loves quoting Buddha and Lao Tzu. This friend is all about good vibes. Indica strains are known for having calming and relaxing effects, great for evening use and the perfect pairing for a yoga or meditation session. Try a vaporizer pen with cannabis oil that has been infused with stress relieving notes like lavender and chamomile and other botanical essences like those in [Alchemy by Dark Heart vape pens](http://www.darkheartalchemy.com/learn-more/). Sure to help your bestie get through the rest of the winter season with a well-balanced aura.\r\n\r\n### The Busy Mom Who Never Sleeps\r\n\r\nEveryone knows a super mom. No one is sure how they do it. Up early and on the go until the wee hours. She might spend countless nights lying awake unable to drift off to sleep, wrought with a full mind. According to [The Atlantic](http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/08/americans-are-getting-worse-at-taking-sleeping-pills/375935/), over 50 million Americans suffer from insomnia and you know your favorite multi-tasking mama is one of them. This year, give her the gift of sleep. Check out brands that offer cannabis oil capsules or tinctures she can keep stashed in the nightstand for a restful sleep. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [THE ALCHEMY HOLIDAY WELLNESS PACK](http://www.darkheartalchemy.com/hellomdholiday/?utm_source=HelloMDHoliday&utm_campaign=HelloMDHoliday)\r\n\r\nBeing on-the-go means occasionally needing to take the edge off. Alchemy by Dark Heart vape pens carry a lower dose of THC. This is ideal for Mom’s who need to stay sharp but don’t want an overpowering effect. Mint and citrus in the Awaken pen, for instance, work as a stimulant to provide the perfect pick-me up for the morning dash. \r\n### The Newly-Legal College-Bound Cousin\r\n\r\nShe just turned 21 and still buzzing from the vibes of her newly found adulthood. Give her a sample of a marijuana strain someone with a paper deadline can appreciate. Consider strains like Sour Tangie and Sour Diesel, good for finding focus, energizing the mind and lifting the spirits. These Sativa strains are a great alternative for coffee-junkies and tend to be ideal for those oft necessary “wake and bake” mornings or long cram sessions. Vaporizers are great for the novice user or for those who need to remain highly functional throughout the day.\r\n\r\n### The Sweet Tooth\r\n\r\nEveryone knows someone who never seems to be too far from a plate of fresh baked cookies or a delicious slice of cake. For the sweet chaser in your life, stuff their stocking with a few choice cannabis edibles. Browse your local dispensary and be sure to ask about potency. Cannabis edibles tend to come with a pretty intense high, and are definitely not for the cannabis-weary. Pass on any directions when you give this gift to ensure they get the desired effect.\r\n\r\n### The Avid Coffee Drinker\r\n\r\nShe’s never far from her favorite coffee mug, or her favorite coffee shop. You would usually get a well stocked gift certificate to Starbucks, but this year - change things up a bit. For the coffee lover in your life, try a cannabis-infused coffee product. This ancient tradition has been around since the 16th century. \r\n\r\nDosage is again something you want to carefully consider, but there are plenty of low-dose options for someone new to cannabis. Remember to look for a Sativa infused coffee for morning consumption and an Indica infused coffee for the evening. \r\n\r\n### Give the Gift of Green\r\n\r\nAs cannabis legality grows in the US, the industry will begin to touch those who may not have considered marijuana to be the missing solution to their every day ailments. Whether its an avid pot smoker, a consistent conservative or just a very open minded wellness seeker - you’ll be sure to thrill unsuspecting gift receivers. \r\n\r\nMore importantly, you could be the reason someone in your life finds chemical-free, holistic support for pain that may be negatively shaping their lives. Sometimes, all it takes is a little nudge (under the guise of fancy wrapping paper). \r\n\r\nFor more tips or to answer your cannabis questions check out the HelloMD question forums or speak to your local dispensary. The first migraine I had in my teens hit me like a lightning bolt, and I fell to the ground on my knees holding my head and it didn’t stop until I passed out and woke up 24 hours later. From that time on I would experience migraines frequently and they would come in clusters. Often I would be vomiting, see an aura and spend days in bed. \n\nVisiting with doctors, they never really had an answer but they would hand me a prescription. After multiple medications that did not work, and all which had intense side effects, plus visits to alternative practitioners, I assumed this was something that I needed to live with. And I did, for the next 20+ years. As time wore on my migraines settled into a monthly pattern. But after the birth of my 3rd child, they suddenly became much, much worse.\n\n### Opioids - A Long Term Solution? \n\nTrying to raise three kids all under the age of 4 and working full time, I did not have time for migraines. So, at the onset of a migraine I would pop a Vicodin and maybe another. The Vicodin helped to keep the pain at bay, as I needed to function and could not afford to spend hours, much less days in bed. Even at the time, I knew this needed to be a short term strategy, addiction was too easy a trap.\n\nFinally, a friend insisted that I consider cannabis as a solution. Honestly, I had nothing to lose, but I thought my chances of success were zero to none. I also did not consider myself a stoner.\n\n### Marijuana Stopped My Migraines \n\nMarijuana stopped my migraines. After 20+ years, I do not experience frequent migraines anymore. It did not happen right away but today I live relatively pain free, and free of narcotics. How did I do it? It’s a two step process. The first step is preventative, which cannot be over emphasized. The second step is preventing pain if a migraine/headache does sneak through. \n\nThe preventative steps are relatively simple. I take 10 mg of 20:1 CBD to THC Rosette Wellnesstincture in the morning. I have found this ratio to be the most effective. Later in the day I take Moxie Meds 4:1 tincture, also at a 10 mg dosage.\n \nIt is important to note that high ratio CBD products do not make you high and although I ingest cannabis throughout the day, I am never high when taking these preventative measures. Also, CBD is not a silver bullet that takes effect in a day or two. I have found that the effects are cumulative and it took a 2-3 months of daily dosing before the longer lasting impact was felt.\n\nIn addition to cannabis, I also take [Vitamin B and Magnesium](http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/condition/migraine-headache) which research has found to reduce migraines in patients who take these supplements regularly. I make sure to exercise regularly, typically hiking 3x a week and yoga 3x a week. Lastly, I eliminated gluten, soy and wine from my diet, which personally helped me, but may not be necessary for others.\n\nToday, I am almost 100% migraine free. What does happen is what I call a ‘shadow headache’. When I feel the shadow descending, which is usually the result of a stressful event, I reach for my vape pen. As I do not do well with high THC, my oil cartridges are always high CBD and low THC. \n\nCBD is known to be an analgesic as well as an anti inflammatory. My favorite oil cartridge is Bloom Farms Electra Tsu 3:1 oil cartridge. LOVE…I even wrote them a haiku, my highest form of praise and adoration.\n\n### Preventing Migraines\n\nMigraine prevention is a possible. What triggers a migraine is individual, but the solutions mentioned above could prevent yours. I am always surprised by the amount of acceptance I hear from migraine sufferers, where all the attention is paid to pain management rather than migraine prevention. Why not try to stop them before they begin? As a result of my preventative efforts my life has changed significantly, for the better. I hope perhaps my solution helps you or someone you know.\n\nDo you have a migraine solution? His lyrics are considered poetry - the contemplation, full of longing and loss, often mixed with the heaviness (or lightness) of allegory. Moments of deep introspection in my life have invariably been punctuated by the voice of Cohen and many rainy days locked in the house, Leonard Cohen, the artist of choice. \r\n\r\nSomehow, it almost seems appropriate that Cohen left us this week at the age of 82. A historic week that left so many of us feeling that we woke up to a new world. His death is yet another moment to stop and pause, an opportunity for reflection and perhaps even some Cohen-style redemption. Somehow, his death feels symbolic, like a tattoo across the events of this week. His latest album is aptly entitled ‘You Want it Darker'. However, I must actually believe that most of us ultimately want \"It\" lighter.\r\n\r\nCohen was rumored to be in poor health for some time. A recent article in Spin quotes Cohen’s son Adam as saying:\r\n\r\n>“This old man, who was truly in pain and discomfort, would at some intervals get out of his medical chair and dance in front of his speakers,” he reveals. “And sometimes, we would put on a song and listen to it on repeat just like teenagers with the help of medical marijuana. I think in states of pain and discomfort, what do you seek with more energy and more clarity than joy and jubilance?”\r\n\r\nAmen. \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3333333333333333,"src":"/static/1d715c88497fe5d61742a1fb5dd2e683/14b42/862e476943c4abde140ab94837319ab9.jpg","srcSet":"/static/1d715c88497fe5d61742a1fb5dd2e683/f836f/862e476943c4abde140ab94837319ab9.jpg 200w,\n/static/1d715c88497fe5d61742a1fb5dd2e683/2244e/862e476943c4abde140ab94837319ab9.jpg 400w,\n/static/1d715c88497fe5d61742a1fb5dd2e683/14b42/862e476943c4abde140ab94837319ab9.jpg 800w,\n/static/1d715c88497fe5d61742a1fb5dd2e683/47498/862e476943c4abde140ab94837319ab9.jpg 1200w,\n/static/1d715c88497fe5d61742a1fb5dd2e683/54ac5/862e476943c4abde140ab94837319ab9.jpg 1365w","srcWebp":"/static/1d715c88497fe5d61742a1fb5dd2e683/58556/862e476943c4abde140ab94837319ab9.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/1d715c88497fe5d61742a1fb5dd2e683/61e93/862e476943c4abde140ab94837319ab9.webp 200w,\n/static/1d715c88497fe5d61742a1fb5dd2e683/1f5c5/862e476943c4abde140ab94837319ab9.webp 400w,\n/static/1d715c88497fe5d61742a1fb5dd2e683/58556/862e476943c4abde140ab94837319ab9.webp 800w,\n/static/1d715c88497fe5d61742a1fb5dd2e683/99238/862e476943c4abde140ab94837319ab9.webp 1200w,\n/static/1d715c88497fe5d61742a1fb5dd2e683/5e0b8/862e476943c4abde140ab94837319ab9.webp 1365w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2072-markdown","title":"Is This the Perfect Marijuana Edible?","slug":"is-this-the-perfect-marijuana-edible","content":"I don’t usually like marijuana edibles. Too sweet, too sticky, too large, poorly packaged, too slow to come on and unpredictable with their effect. Lately however, I have discovered a new best friend that comes in a little tin box, and her name is ‘Kiva’ – the perfect marijuana edible.\n\nKiva Terra Bites are made by Kiva Confections one of the leading edible’s manufacturers in California. Their factory in Oakland, and the founding story of the company is impressive, and a wonderful example of how the thriving cannabis industry is uplifting the economy and providing opportunity to thousands of small businesses and their employees. \n\nFounders Kristi Knoblich and her partner Scott Palmer, were both photographers when the economy turned south in 2008. With prospects for photography work dimming, they started growing in their garden to help make ends meet. Upon visiting dispensaries to sell their crop, they observed a gap in the market for lab tested, professionally packaged and labeled edibles, that actually tasted good. With Kiva Confections, they set about meeting this apparent opportunity. \n\nTheir first product – The chocolate bar– sold well. But it was not long before they innovated further with a focus on the wonderful expresso bean, and the Kiva Terra Bite was created.\n\nKristi explains: \n\n“Patients began asking us for a smaller portion of our bars. They would make a motion with their hands, indicating a small, palm sized serving of chocolate. Scott concluded the chocolate covered espresso bean would fit the description of what they were looking for. The small, simple serving size would promise consumers convenience and the ability to dial down their dose, thereby mitigating their over consumption. And so, Terra was born in November of 2013. That’s what our company is all about: creating innovative ways people to consume cannabis, and have a positive experience!”\n\nKristi personally showed me around their impressive facility, and I watched in amazement as the espresso beans were created in large, turning cement mixer looking machines, each one carefully and skillfully manned by a production specialist. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/582365ed65e8fd0008884100/embedded_images/582366cf65e8fd0008884107/Screen_Shot_2016-11-09_at_9.58.44_AM.png)\n\n**Kristi inspects one of the chocolate panning machines**\n\nKristi on how they learned the art of covering espresso beans with chocolate:\n\n“We spent some time in Ohio, learning the art of panning from the panning Guru, Kevin Dolan, who has since passed away. Panning is the process of coating the beans or berries in chocolate until they become the target size; it’s like the snowball effect. Now Kiva has a team of expert panners, and they practice their art right here in our facility in Oakland. Our Terra Espresso beans and blueberries have become our most popular products.”\n\nSo why is this the perfect edible, and why have I become such a fan?\n\n#### Portion Size (and dose)\nEach chocolate bean contains 5mg of THC. This makes dosing (or micro dosing) easy and consistent. Just eat as many beans as you want to dose. I personally like to take two beans together, and then might add a third about an hour later. This 10 – 15mg range puts me in a wonderful, happy mood for the evening, enhances the sound of music and leaves me sharp enough to cook and enjoy a delicious meal with my family. It’s the perfect Friday night wind down after a stressful week. \n\n#### Delicious Taste\nThere is no hint of cannabis in the flavor. It’s just a combination of great tasting dark chocolate (which I love) and roasted espresso coffee bean which you just chew up once the chocolate has gone. I am not sure the espresso bean is enough to provide a wake-up kick, but it might, and I personally don’t enjoy getting sleepy with cannabis and so this is an added bonus. \n \n#### Convenient \nThe beans come in a little round tin, and are easy to pack and carry. There is no wrapper to create trash, or look unsightly as partially unwrapped chocolate does. I have taken the beans camping with me, and to others houses as a dinner guest. Everybody seems to love them!\n\n#### Fast Acting\nI have eaten edibles that take a full two hours to take effect, which is really too long for my purposes. Sweet ReLeaf has created one of the most effective and enjoyable topicals on the market today.\n\nAs Didi says, \"We believe in the healing power of plants, specifically how the human endocannabinoid system communicates with the compounds found in cannabis. We like to call it intelligent medicine.”\n\nIn this piece, Didi talks about how cannabis topicals can help ease the pain and swelling caused by arthritis.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### Medical Cannabis Helps Arthritis Patients Recover & Heal\n\nAccording to the Centers for Disease Control, nearly 50% of people over the age of 65 in the U.S. will be diagnosed with [arthritis](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5aecf518b869a6000796590b/treating-arthritis-pain-via-the-endocannabinoid-system). Although arthritic pain is also diagnosed in hundreds of thousands of children under the age of 18, most arthritis patients are retirement age or older. \n\nArthritis commonly affects the hands and feet, with the exception of osteoarthritic pain, which causes hip pain and stiffness. The term arthritis refers to more than 100 joint conditions that cause stiffness, mild to severe pain, swelling and sometimes deformity. There’s no cure for arthritis (except gout).\n\nHowever, breakthrough studies have linked cannabis as a contender for even the most powerful prescription drugs. Medical marijuana has an advantage that painkillers don’t have: It works with the patient's body to help them recover instead of just masking the symptoms of arthritis.\n\n### The Many Types of Arthritis\n\nDespite the daunting number of arthritis forms, they can be categorized by one of the following types:\n\n* Inflammatory arthritis\n* Degenerative of mechanical arthritis\n* Soft-tissue musculoskeletal pain\n* Back pain\n* Connective tissue disease\n* Infectious arthritis\n* Metabolic arthritis\n\nArthritis in its various forms affects patients in different ways and carries with it different symptoms. This means that there’s no one way to treat it. \n\nRELATED: [TREATING ARTHRITIS PAIN VIA THE ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5aecf518b869a6000796590b/treating-arthritis-pain-via-the-endocannabinoid-system)\n\n### Traditional Arthritis Pain Management Medications\n\nPrescription drugs are the most common treatment for arthritis pain management. These prescription treatments can help reduce pain and treat symptoms such as swelling, stiffness and tenderness. Various types of medications are administered depending on what type of arthritis a person is dealing with.\n\n#### Prednisone\n\nPrednisone is an oral steroid prescribed to reduce inflammation in arthritis patients. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, restlessness and weight gain. It’s most commonly prescribed as a short-term therapy due to the severity of its side effects.\n\n#### Acetaminophen & Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs\n\nAcetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are common over-the-counter medications prescribed to relieve pain. Acetaminophen, though effective in treating arthritic pain, doesn’t address the accompanying inflammation. NSAIDs, though used to treat pain and inflammation, are processed through the liver; therefore, continued use can cause serious damage to this organ.\n\n#### Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs\n\nDisease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are often used by patients with rheumatoid arthritis. This medication essentially slows the progression of the disease by acting on the immune system. Side effects include upset stomach, bone marrow and liver damage, and shortness of breath. \n\n### Alternative Pain Management Options for Arthritis\n\nFor patients who seek alternative treatments for their arthritis, there are a few options that have proven to be effective, especially when accompanied by overall lifestyle changes. Exploring alternative treatments can help a patient live a normal life and even enjoy an active one.\n\n**Acupuncture** is an ancient Chinese method of healing. Practitioners use extremely tiny needles to trigger points in the body that release endorphins where it’s needed the most. \n\n**Hot and cold therapies** provide temporary relief from the burning sensations and stiffness that come with arthritis. Cold compresses, soaking in a hot shower or using hot paraffin wax can ease pain and/or swelling and increase blood circulation. \n\nOther alternative therapies include:\n\n* Yoga\n* Meditation\n* Electrotherapy\n* Nutritional supplements such as turmeric or fish oil, which are natural anti-inflammatories\n\n### Study Shows Cannabis Reduces Arthritis Pain\n\nMedical marijuana has the ability to treat the entire body without debilitating side effects—and often without any side effects at all. Cannabis is a known analgesic, with powerful pain-reducing components that rival prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications.\n\nA study funded by Arthritis Research UK that’s specifically meant to identify how cannabis works in arthritis patients has begun to make a clear connection between marijuana and pain. In this study, scientists examined nerve cells called CB2 receptors and found that activating specific marijuana pathways produced an anti-inflammatory effect. This is a groundbreaking clinical discovery, since inflammation is a major hindrance for patients with arthritic pain. These patients often rely on harmful prescription drugs for relief.\n\nRELATED: [3 POPULAR QUESTIONS ABOUT MARIJUANA & ARTHRITIS ANSWERED](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a720780f24d1300077ccb25/3-popular-questions-about-marijuana-and-arthritis-answered)\n\n### Cannabis Topicals Can Help Alleviate Arthritis Symptoms\n\nCannabis topicals provide a unique solution for patients with arthritis, mainly because their side effects are nonexistent. With proper and regular use, cannabis topicals can:\n\n* relieve arthritis pain almost immediately\n* reduce inflammation that accompanies arthritic joints\n* gradually restore mobility in arthritis patients who’ve been forced to live a stationary life \n\nCannabis topicals don’t travel through the bloodstream, as is the case with ingestion and inhalation. Therefore, marijuana-infused topicals don’t produce a euphoric high. Patients who use cannabis topicals can essentially apply their product to the desired area and return to their activities without interruption. Whether they operate heavy machinery, work in a corporate environment or care for children during the day, folks with arthritis find cannabis topicals can often be a life-changing therapy with none of the psychoactivity that comes with consuming cannabis, specifically tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).\n\n### Arthritis Patients Can Start by Consulting With a Cannabis Doctor\n\nThe best thing to do is to speak to a health-care professional who understands how cannabis works with the body. A great place to start would be by requesting a consultation with a doctor on HelloMD. Ask any questions you have concerning products to try, how to take them and how they may affect your life. If you’re recommended to receive medical marijuana, you can order a product from Sweet ReLeaf to reduce your arthritic pain and inflammation.\n\nThe best advice for anyone living with arthritis pain is to explore all possible options before resorting to the prescription drug path. Cannabis provides a treatment option that works with your body to heal. This can mean the difference between taking one medication after another to combat pain and medication side effects, and living a life unencumbered by joint pain.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. We know ahead of time that a given product will work for a headache, for back-pain, for an upset stomach, or for sleep. This had not been the case in the medical cannabis arena, at least not until now. HMBLDT is out to change this. \r\n\r\nI recently met the folks from the HMBLDT team, and got to listen in on the many intricacies that went into making cannabis products that promise what they call ‘needs states’. While more and more concentrate makers are delivering their medicine in replaceable cartridges, the HMBLDT team explained that short of creating an all-in-one product, with no moving parts, they would not be able to stake claim to needs states (ie. Outcomes). For now, HMBLDT offers these four devices, promising BLISS, RELIEF, CALM and SLEEP.\r\n\r\nNeeds state-based packaging is a critical step forward for the cannabis industry, in particular for attracting new patients. To date, most cannabis flower or infused products have been modest at best in declaring what outcome their products may offer. Instead, we’ve witnessed a more generalist approach, where patients are highly dependent on the bud-tender to try to match products with symptoms and unfortunately not all bud tenders are well informed.\r\n\r\n### Why Accurate Dosing Matters\r\n\r\nHMBLDT has relied on the right combination of cannabis extracts and technology to deliver on their promises. For one, each of the four vaporizer pens come pre-loaded with very clear, beautiful looking cannabis oils - that you can clearly see through the device's gauge. In each, aside from the secret sauce they have invested significantly in developing, you will find a carefully implemented CDB-THC ratio. \r\n\r\nDose control is where HMBLDT introduces a unique solution. Until recently, dosing, as a means of optimizing one’s success with medical cannabis, has been woefully underused in cannabis packaging. In the edibles segment, for instance, we are finally starting to see more ‘micro-dosing’-- an approach that will invariably help both new and existing patients better manage their results. Dosing controlled products like HMBLT will help the general public to better understand that cannabis - like other medications - needs to be delivered on a dose basis in order to achieve desired (yes, rather than undesired) results. \r\n\r\nIn the case of the HMBLDT devices, the research team identified what they believe is the optimal single dose; the technology team added a feature that turns off the device once you have inhaled that dose. Even better, the device vibrates to tell you you’ve reached the per dose amount. This control mechanism is critical to delivering on the promised needs states - BLISS, RELIEF, CALM and SLEEP.\r\n\r\n### My Experience with HMBLDT\r\n\r\nI’ve tried three of them; BLISS, RELIEF, and CALM. I’m very curious to try SLEEP actually as I am one of those patients for whom THC actually stimulates rather than sedates me, mostly by creating a ‘busy-brain’ effect. SLEEP includes plenty of THC, but I’ve spoken to a few people already that used SLEEP with success, including members of our team here at HelloMD.  \r\n\r\nAs for the others, I’m sold. I’ve used many vaporizing devices and concentrates, in search of one that I could depend on regularly. I’ve found many that I really like, but in HMBLDT I have one that just feels dependable and consistent. And ironically, not withstanding my knowledge of and comfort with these devices, it’s the dose control that is making the biggest difference for me. \r\n\r\n### Vaping with CALM\r\n\r\nWhile this one is built of a CBD-THC ratio of 15:1, don’t be fooled. You can feel the THC. For me, CALM actually created a real sense of focus. In my life, this is a sense of calm, as it can be difficult for me to stay in one lane.\r\n\r\nHelloMD team member Ashlyn, also tried this pen and she has this to say about CALM:\r\n\r\n>\"The first pen that I tried was the Calm. It has a 15:1 ratio of CBD to THC, and only one inhalation was enough to ease the migraine that I could feel coming on. Because of the high-CBD content, I felt no psychoactive or sedating effects, just a mild sense of relaxation and easing of tension. This allowed me to function normally and alertly at work.\"\r\n\r\n### Vaping with RELIEF\r\n\r\nThis device’s concentrate is based on a CBD to THC ratio of 2:1, a ratio I usually prefer as I find the CBD mutes some of the undesirable results THC can produce (ie. Anxiety). Unfortunately, I am not one whose pain is subdued by THC; often the opposite actually. So I seek out solutions like RELIEF. One bonus for me with RELIEF, it helped me sleep soundly.\r\n\r\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5820cd89cd3edf000b8d8fce/embedded_images/5820ce00f1221300073dc671/Screen_Shot_2016-11-07_at_10.16.13_AM.png)\r\n\r\nMelissa, who heads up our Customer Service team, also tried this pen and she had this to say about RELIEF:\r\n>\"I came home feeling nauseous one evening and decided to try the RELIEF pen. I took my first draw pretty lightly and it did not vibrate. The next time, I inhaled more deeply, and in a few seconds it did vibrate. It made me cough pretty hard though! After coughing, I started to feel a little less nauseous. I took 2 more doses and felt complete relief. I was no longer nauseous. I was surprised, and happy it worked so well for my nausea.\"\r\n\r\n### Vaping with BLISS\r\n\r\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5820cd89cd3edf000b8d8fce/embedded_images/5820cd8bcd3edf000b8d8fcf/Screen_Shot_2016-11-07_at_10.38.37_AM.png)\r\n\r\nI just love the name. By itself, it makes feel good. And so did the device. BLISS in particular is where the dosing control made a difference. When using cannabis for more ‘blissful’ results, there is nothing I like less than over-consuming. HMBLDT solves that problem.\r\n\r\nNote that while the device is programmed to vibrate when you have reached the prescribed dose, I did not always get there. I know I don’t have a very strong inhale, so this is likely the reason. Either way, at least I know that I am below the prescribed dose, and not over.\r\n\r\nMark, HelloMD's CEO tried out the BLISS pen and had this to say:\r\n\r\n>\"My experience with BLISS was very positive. I found that if you pull strongly it will make you cough, so I now prefer to take mini puffs. It made me feel happy and slightly enhanced, but not really high, which is great. It was a positive experience and I really enjoy the overall design of the pen as well.\"\r\n\r\n### Vaping with SLEEP\r\n\r\nI did not try the SLEEP pen, but two HelloMD team members, Ryan and Chris both enjoyed their experience. Ryan from our Customer Services team had this to say about the SLEEP pen:\r\n\r\n>\"The HMBLT Sleep vape pen has a very slick, almost surgical design and the packaging could have arrived from Apple’s cannabis division. Its convenient size slid right into my pocket and after work I almost forgot to take it for a test run. \r\n\r\n>I suffer from insomnia. Some nights I can’t fall asleep, though this is easily remedied with cannabis. Other nights I fall asleep, but wake up at 2 am, my brain immediately keeping my body awake. After using the HMBLDT SLEEP pen for about a week now, I can confidently say that it is my first line for early am insomnia. It's just that good. \r\n\r\n>I used to fumble around in the night, count the seconds to myself and watch the cloud of vapor to see if it was large or small. That was how I dosed myself. A small cloud, maybe, needed another puff, while a large cloud probably signaled that tomorrow may require an extra cup of coffee. The HMBLDT sleep pen fixes all of this with its fixed dosing.\" \r\n\r\nChris, who supports our Business Division, reviews many products for us and here is what he had to say about the SLEEP pen:\r\n\r\n>\"I was incredibly impressed with what was contained inside the Hmbldt sleep pen. The oil had a fantastic taste, and the vapor was incredibly smooth. I noticed a much cooler temperature of the vapor produced by the HMBLDT, a staggering difference to usual harsh vapor that I’ve come to expect from other vape pens. \r\n\r\n>This makes it the perfect accessory for your nightstand if you have trouble sleeping like I do. The easy and all around pleasant experience of consuming a couple of doses from the HMBLDT pen could easily replace your night time ritual. After climbing into bed the other night I enjoyed 3 doses over about half an hour as I did some evening reading. \r\n\r\n>Much to my surprise, I found myself nodding off before long; a task that typically requires a significant amount of THC to accomplish. Not only did it help me fall asleep quicker than usual, I also slept soundly through the night, a rarity for me.\"\r\n \r\n### Disruptive Pricing\r\n\r\nHere is the other area where HMBLDT is disruptive. The HMBLDT devices are each listed for $100 retail. And these are disposable, so every time you need to reload, you buy a new one entirely (the company is planning a recycling program, by the way). But at $100, HMBLDT is positioning itself as much as 40% above the incumbent providers. If nothing else, this will make it stand out and get people to understand this is something new. \r\n\r\nWhile we may see some downward pressure on this pricing as the market expands, there is clearly a market for products that work. If the SLEEP device truly, and dependably, helps people sleep -- they will pay $100. I also suspect this signals the beginning of a new segment of higher-priced cannabis products, as manufacturers look to separate themselves from the pack.\r\n\r\nOverall, HMBLDT has done the industry a big favor by coming to market with these four devices. Boveda leads the industry in humidity regulation technology and allows both producers and patients alike to preserve the quality of their cannabis products. Charles spoke to us about his personal journey with medical marijuana and his experience using cannabis to ease his nerve and phantom limb pain after losing his foot in a terrible motorcycle accident. \n\n### Do you use cannabis as a medicine?\n\nYes, but I never had fun with cannabis recreationally in my life, it wasn’t really for me. Three years ago I got hit by a careless driver on my motorcycle, and this resulted in the amputation of my left foot. Phantom limb pain and nerve pain have become a constant and painful problem for me. Yet, the doctors only means for me to deal with this pain was to give me more and more opiates. \n\nOpioid abuse is not a road I wanted to go down. I live in Minnesota and we have a medical marijuana program, so I was able to try marijuana for my phantom limb pain. Because of cannabis I was able to stop using opioids because I could use marijuana for both the pain relief and it allows me to sleep at the end of the day. \n\nThe funny thing is, that even though we were operating our business within the cannabis industry, I was very skeptical about patients using cannabis as medicine. It was only due to my own desperation to stop my own pain that I eventually tried cannabis. It has been amazing what it has done for me. I went from being a skeptic to a believer overnight.\n\n### How did this influence you?\n\nMy personal story, and how cannabis helped me with phantom limb pain, informs everything we do at Boveda in relation to cannabis. I have a personal passion for medicinal cannabis and how it can help others. Through marijuana we can alleviate the huge epidemic of opioid addiction and death, so I have made it my own personal crusade to make sure that the flower stays in the best position it can be for people who do use it as a medicine.\n\nI also work to help expand the knowledge and understanding of the industry. At Boveda we have commissioned a lot of testing so we can see what exactly is happening to the cannabis flower at different stages of storage and what is really the maximum storage time it can have. We are also looking to see if there is a best objective curing method and a best objective storing container, and since my story informs all of that, I would say that 95% of my attention is on cannabis. \n\nWhat I have discovered is that people around me who were skeptical about cannabis and had a certain idea of what a 'cannabis user' looked like has completely changed. I am a competitive athlete, I still compete in skiing, golf, and mountain biking, I’m a professional, and I don't 'look' like a cannabis user. \n\nIn my circle of influence that has definitely reverberated. People who have had certain feelings about cannabis and about what 'those people' (who use cannabis)' look like or do, know that I am not any of those things. Since I don't have a fear of sharing my story and I am not involved with a lot of things that the stereotypical marijuana user is, it is good at helping convert people to the idea that cannabis is a medicine and it can be used safely and effectively. \n\n### What about cannabis in Minnesota?\n\nIn Minnesota, we haven't seen a lot of people go towards cannabis. I think there's only maybe 1,100 people who are patients here in Minnesota. Because of some of the restrictions on what qualifies for medical marijuana, as well as restrictions on growing and administration methods, it has put it out of reach for a lot of people. I’m not sure if this kind of program will ever survive here, because of how it was put into place, which is a real shame.\n\n### What do you think about recreational use of cannabis?\n\nThe reality is, I come from a spot with personal beliefs of personal responsibility. I think people are being hurt by the status quo, so I think we shouldn’t be asking if we should legalize medical marijuana, but rather, are people getting hurt by the status quo? \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5818cc787d130e000740091d/embedded_images/5818cc7b7d130e000740091e/Screen_Shot_2016-11-01_at_9.56.53_AM.png)\nCharles and I recently met at the cannabis conference New West in SF.\n \nAre we okay with people getting addicted to opioids? Are we okay with making the cheaper and logical leap after opioids, something that can kill people even faster, like heroine? Are we okay with people getting a medication that can kill them right from their doctor? \n\nSo, there is clearly a paradox in the status quo. The safest option for people medically is something that isn't prescribed to them by a doctor, meaning marijuana. Yet the thing that can kill them, opioids, is what their doctor is handing out to them. I think people should have the ability to responsibly decide what they put inside their body and clearly cannabis is a safe and effective medicine. \n\n### How do we sway the negative stereotype of cannabis?\n\nPeople need to tell their story of how marijuana has helped them. I encourage friends who have family members who are against medical or recreational marijuana to tell my story. I am a conservative, Republican, Christian who has volunteered at church every Sunday for the last six years. I am an NRA member, I carry a gun, I am a competitive athlete, and I am a professional. Those qualities don’t normally fit into what people see as a typical cannabis user, which is why my story, in addition to being a medical case, is a political case as well. \n\nThis is also what a cannabis user can look like. Marijuana legalization, however, does not have to be a political issue, because being a conservative I believe in personal responsibility. So once again, using cannabis responsibly is exactly what I believe in. Stories of people who don’t normally fit into the cannabis mold and show people that a cannabis user can be anyone are important. Peoples’ perceptions or prejudices may keep them from listening to certain people, so finding the right messenger to get the message to certain people is crucial.\n\n### Anything else you would like to add about Boveda?\n\nOur product is unique and uniquely valuable. Boveda is being used by some big brands because they understand that it is the right thing to do for safety and quality of their cannabis. For personal use at home, we recently just released our 58% humidity formula for people who wanted a slightly lower humidity for their cannabis flowers. You just pop a Boveda pack in with your flowers and it adds or removes moisture as needed, then locks into the moisture that is encrypted into the Boveda pack.\n\nOur Twitter and Instagram are both @bovedainc and our [Boveda](http://www.bovedainc.com/) website.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3333333333333333,"src":"/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/14b42/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.jpg","srcSet":"/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/f836f/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.jpg 200w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/2244e/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.jpg 400w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/14b42/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.jpg 800w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/47498/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.jpg 1200w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/54ac5/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.jpg 1365w","srcWebp":"/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/58556/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/61e93/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.webp 200w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/1f5c5/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.webp 400w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/58556/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.webp 800w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/99238/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.webp 1200w,\n/static/38d19174a64137421b08649bc3c9d32b/5e0b8/72b361cc7c868978e847794e4cf5b9ee.webp 1365w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2237-markdown","title":"The 5 Most Popular Strains of Cannabis","slug":"the-5-most-popular-strains-of-cannabis","content":"Cannabis strains become incredibly popular if they have specific qualities that make them unique from other marijuana strains on the market. Often, one of those qualities is the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content found in a strain—typically, the higher the THC content, the more popular the cannabis strain. Most of the five most popular marijuana strains we have selected are sativa strains. Sativas are known to provide an uplifting and energetic quality as compared to indica strains, which tend to be more calming and sedative. \n\nThe most popular marijuana strains are widely produced and sold in various states where cannabis consumption is legal. All of these marijuana strains are used for their medicinal properties, but are also used recreationally as well. We consider these classic marijuana strains, which are often recognized by name even by non-cannabis consumers.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThe five most popular marijuana strains are Blue Dream, Jack Herer, Cannatonic, Sour Diesel and OG Kush. \n\n### Popular Marijuana Strain #1: Blue Dream\n\n![Popular marijuana strain: Blue Dream](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5817b52aeab4e6000a28b544/embedded_images/5817b52eeab4e6000a28b545/Screen_Shot_2016-10-31_at_1.54.09_PM.png) \n\n[Blue Dream](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a70be4e6c30440008cafd14/blue-dream) is arguably the most popular strain of marijuana in the country. Blue Dream, which originated in California, is a sativa-dominant hybrid that’s a cross between the indica Blueberry and Haze, which is a sativa. Blue Dream is known for its high levels of THC, with percentages ranging from 17–24% and small levels of both cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabigerol (CBG). \n\nBlue Dream is known to cause full-body relaxation, while also being mentally invigorating. This marijuana strain is known to produce a gentle and calm high without heavily sedative effects. Blue Dream is very popular with medical marijuana patients for daytime relief of pain, depression and nausea. And it’s also praised for not producing a sense of anxiety, which to many makes it a clear winner.\n\n### Popular Marijuana Strain #2: Jack Herer\n\n![Popular marijuana strain: Jack Herer](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5817b52aeab4e6000a28b544/embedded_images/5817b52feab4e6000a28b546/Screen_Shot_2016-10-31_at_1.54.31_PM.png)\n \n[Jack Herer](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cd5d1d520d60009f4f4b1/jack-herer) is another sativa-dominant hybrid that’s a cross of Haze, Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk. It’s known for its mellow effects, which don’t produce a strong high, but rather a very relaxing effect. Cannatonic has great pain-relieving qualities, and it works to reduce inflammation, muscle spasms, anxiety and migraines. \n\nCannatonic produces happy and uplifting feelings without high levels of psychoactivity. It’s considered a borderline marijuana strain because it usually doesn’t produce psychoactive effects due to its higher levels of CBD. Chronic pain is the main symptom of fibromyalgia, along with depression, headaches, and insomnia. [A 2007 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15159679) in the Journal of Neurology found that cannabis can help ease the pain caused by peripheral neuropathy, which is pain caused by damaged nerves. The placebo controlled trial found that cannabis was comparable to the best effective treatment that is currently available for peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy is one of the main causes of pain for people with fibromyalgia. \n\nIn a [survey by the National Pain Foundation](http://nationalpainreport.com/marijuana-rated-most-effective-for-treating-fibromyalgia-8823638.html), medical marijuana was seen as the most effective treatment for fibromyalgia when compared to the three main medications prescribed for the condition, which are Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Savella. 62% of patients who used medical marijuana found it to be a very effective at treating their symptoms of fibromyalgia, and 33% of people said it helped their symptoms. Only 5% said that cannabis was ineffective with alleviating symptoms due to their fibromyalgia. \n\nRELATED: [RELIEF FOR FIBROMYALGIA SYMPTOMS - THE CASE FOR MARIJUANA](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/559adb8865623000060f0000/relief-from-fibromyalgia-symptoms-the-case-for-medical-marijuana)\n\n### The Top Strains for Fibromyalgia\n\nIt has also been hypothesized that fibromyalgia could be caused by CECD, or Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency. If there is one thing we have learned, it's that when patients find success with medicinal cannabis, they want to share their story!\n\nThis past week, I had the honor to speak with Mary. Mary was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2001 and has suffered greatly from the symptoms common with this condition. At the peak of her illness she was able to count 43 prescription medications doctors had given her, many highly addictive. FORTY THREE! \n\n### Prescription Zombie\n\nMary confided in me that she had become a prescription zombie. She considered her life on permanent hold and she was unable even to drive her kids to school for fear that she would not get them there or home safely. One day she woke up in the ER because she had had an opioid blackout.\n\nMary decided she had had enough and wanted to regain her health. She made the choice to stop drinking Diet Coke and then Mary made the choice to eat a healthier diet, so she stopped eating processed foods and began eating organic. \n\n### Cannabis is a More Natural Solution\n\nAfter these changes, she told me, \"Why, if I am putting all of these good things into my body, am I taking so many pills every day? They were making me feel worse, so I thought maybe I should try a more natural medication.\" Mary found cannabis, and for her, it worked.\n\nShe worked with her doctors and slowly weaned herself off of the prescription meds she was on. This process took over four months (she emphasized the importance of working with doctors when getting off of addictive opioids). While weaning herself, she started to use cannabis to ease the withdrawal symptoms. \n\nMary found that not only was cannabis helping with her symptoms but that cannabis gave her her feeling of touch back. Until then she had not even realized that she had lost the feeling of being touched. Her libido returned and according to her \"My life was back on track again.\"\n\nSince then Mary has become an avid home grower. She has also become very proficient at DIY recipes and making cannabis products at home, which she feels are of the best quality and completely organic.\n\n### DIY Coconut Milk\n\nHere she shares her favorite recipe for marijuana infused coconut milk. She swears by its medicinal properties and enjoys her medicated coconut milk regularly to reduce her fibromyalgia symptoms.\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/57fae620299fb7000b811f3f/embedded_images/57fae887321b5700077901a6/Screen_Shot_2016-10-09_at_5.59.07_PM.png)\n\n### What’s Needed:\n\n>3 cup large mouth ball jar\n\n>2 cans organic coconut milk - or equivalent \n\n>Cooking thermometer\n\n>Hand mixer that fits into the jar\n\n>1 half gram of finely ground Keif\n\n### How To\n\nOpen one can of coconut milk and pour it into the jar. Microwave the jar on high power for 2 to 2 1/2 minutes or until temperature is at least 160°F. \n\nAdd the cannabis concentrate (Mary uses kief), and blend well with the hand blender. Place the jar back into the microwave for 20 minutes at 20% power. \n\nTake the jar out and mix well with your hand mixer. Make sure to scrape all the concentrate from the side of the jar and then place the jar back into the microwave for 15 minutes at 10% power.\n \nNow add the second can of coconut milk to the jar and blend well. Place the jar back into the microwave for five more minutes at 10% power. Blend well again.\n \nTake the jar out of the microwave and let it cool for approximately 30 minutes before placing jar lid on. Once cooled, shake the jar to blend the settled water before placing the jar into the refrigerator.\n\nThat’s it! This medicated coconut milk lasts 10 days in refrigerator. In terms of dosing, you will need to know the milligrams of THC within your chief, how much chief you have used and then divide with the amount of coconut milk to figure out your dosage. The author recommends a dosage of 1/2 to 1 ounce.\n  \nThis coconut milk can be added to smoothies, coffee, tea, mashed potatoes, cereal, baked goods and anything that milk is used in. You can also drink it by itself, leaving it on the bottom of your tongue allows it to be utilized faster sublingually.  \n\nDo you have questions about about cannabis?
