And if you find your dog’s stool is consistently loose, try firming it up by adding a spoonful or two of fiber-filled pumpkin to their food. The cans of puréed pumpkin you can find in any grocery store often do the trick. \n\n### 5. Avoid Fleas The Natural Way With Terpenes\n\nWhen it comes to having a pet, fleas are one of the greatest annoyances. Even just a couple of fleas picked up at the local dog park or in your backyard can lead to an infestation. Once fleas are around, they’re hard to get rid of. Cats are especially prone to UTIs, which can be painful for the pet and lead to accidents outside of the litter box. If you take your pet to the vet for a UTI, odds are they’ll prescribe an antibiotic. Results will be better for both if given on an empty stomach, or away from other food. \n\n### How does your product stand out when placed next to your competitors? \n\n**HH:** There are many CBD products on the market right now, but they aren’t all of the same quality. We use only the highest-quality ingredients, including organic, full-spectrum, phytocannabinoid-rich oil; certified, organic medicinal mushrooms; pasture-raised chicken; grass-fed lamb liver; and more. We also provide third-party testing and transparency throughout. \n\n### Is CBD derived from hemp comparable to CBD that comes from the cannabis marijuana plant? What’s the difference?\n\n**HH:** Our plants are a hybrid and not unlike marijuana, but they meet the legal definition of hemp by containing less than 0.3% THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). While some people believe products derived from marijuana are superior, I’m not aware of any studies that exist confirming that, and we have strong anecdotal evidence that hemp products are extremely effective.\n\nWhile cannabis-derived products can currently only be legally sold in licensed dispensaries in the states where the plants are cultivated, products that are derived from hemp can be sold online and at traditional retail outlets in all 50 states, making them both an effective and more accessible option. \n\n### What hemp-derived products do you like and why?\n\n**HH:** I like any hemp-derived products of all varieties: tinctures, edibles or bites, salves, capsules and more. If your dog or your cat is eating badly, it’s going to be extremely difficult for the body to function properly and protect itself against disease,” says Dr. Richter. \r\n\r\nAccording to Dr. Richter, the evolutionary history of dogs and cats indicates that they’re best suited to a minimally processed diet that mainly consists of fresh meats. \r\n\r\n“The only reason why dry food and canned food exists is for our convenience,” he says. The heavily processed foods our pets eat today have little to do with what’s best for them, but rather what was established by historical precedent. \r\n\r\nIt was only in the 1900s that canned food for pets began to appear in stores. During World War II, the need for tin led pet food manufacturers to develop dry dog food. The convenience and low-cost of this feeding method made it popular among pet owners—a trend that continues today. \r\n\r\n“Get [your pets] off of processed food and onto a fresh whole food diet. … That’s probably the single biggest thing that people can do [for their pet’s health],” says Dr. Richter. He adds that he’s seen a host of common problems resolve themselves by a simple change in diet. \r\n\r\n“We see this happen time and time again: We get a dog that has chronic allergies, and the people have tried every medication, and nothing really helped. … Then you put [these animals] on a fresh, whole food diet and do almost nothing else. So how do you provide the best care for your furry friend without giving up your life or breaking the bank? \r\n\r\n“We try to help [our customers] understand what's good, better and best, and help them do what they can,” says Heidi Hill, owner of [Holistic Hound](https://holistichound.com/), a pet store in Berkeley, CA, that focuses on health and wellness. Heidi opened her store in 2003 and has established a name for herself in the local community as an expert in pet nutrition.  \r\n\r\n“If [people] can only afford to feed kibble, or only want to feed kibble because it's convenient and less expensive, then we help them understand how they can make it better,” she says. \r\n\r\nLike Dr. Richter, Heidi says that the best meal is a home-prepped one. But barring that, there are now many commercial pet food options that can be healthy alternatives. When discussing these options with her customers, she tends to give the types of foods available a ranking from least to most processed:\r\n\r\n1. Frozen raw or cooked food\r\n2. Freeze dried or air-dried foods\r\n3. Dehydrated foods\r\n4. Canned food\r\n5. Kibble\r\n\r\nThere are still ways to make your pet’s diet healthier, even if you opt for canned or dry foods. In the wild, dogs, cats and other animals get a lot of their water from the foods they eat—another reason why kibble isn’t the ideal diet for our furry companions. Heidi advises adding moisture to kibble in the form of bone broth or goat’s milk to help keep your pet hydrated.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, not all canned foods and kibble are created equal: Some products consist of mostly grain fillers and little meat, while others on the market are made with generic low-grade meat meals and meat by-products. These low-quality ingredients can contain animals that were euthanized or died of certain diseases. \r\n\r\nWhen buying pet food, pet parents should instead look for foods that contain mostly meat and list the specific types of meat used, like chicken, beef or pork. Overall, you should aim to buy the highest quality food that you can afford. \r\n\r\nIt’s also important to remember that feeding your pet a healthy diet isn’t an all-or-nothing proposition. You can vary your pet’s diet: Feed kibble during the day and a less-processed food at night, for example. \r\n\r\n“Most of us try to eat healthy, but every now and again you're totally having pizza for lunch—but that doesn't mean that all the other fresh food that you're eating is worthless,” says Dr. Richter. \r\n\r\n“Think about raw or cooked food, or something fresh to add [to your pet’s food],” says Heidi. “Even if it’s just a few days a week, even if it's only table scraps … Even just a little bit is better than nothing.” She also adds that variety is important. Just like in human diets, different foods provide your pet with different nutrients. \r\n\r\n### Taking a Proactive Approach to Pet Care \r\n\r\nProviding your pet with a species-appropriate diet is the best way to ensure their health, but both Heidi and Dr. Richter also stress the value of taking a preventative and integrative approach to their care. \r\n\r\nPrevention means being proactive. Regular checkups at the vet are important, as are making sure your pet is getting enough exercise, mental stimulation and training. All of these are basic components to having a pet that’s healthy both mentally and physically. \r\n\r\nAnd beyond that, if medical problems do arise, an integrative approach gives pet owners multiple ways of addressing issues, says Dr. Richter.\r\n\r\nAfter five years of practicing veterinary medicine, Dr. Richter began to notice that with some conditions, he’d often exhaust all treatment options to no avail. This led him to seek out and study alternative therapies like acupuncture, herbal medicine and chiropractic therapy.\r\n\r\nIn addition to these therapies, including supplements in your pet’s diet can be beneficial—it just depends on the individual animal. Some supplements like probiotics and fish oils have benefits for most dogs and cats by promoting gut and coat health, respectively. However, most supplements aren’t completely benign and should be taken under the guidance of a veterinarian or someone well-versed in nutritional therapies, says Dr. Richter.\r\n\r\nHe goes on to talk about an emerging field of science called nutrigenomics—or the science of how different foods can affect gene expression in the body. “With the right set of nutrients and supplements, we can take advantage of the body's natural defense system,” says Dr. Richter. “You can literally turn on and off genes in the body by adding or subtracting different food ingredients from an animal’s diet. You can decrease inflammation, improve energy and improve the body's cancer fighting ability by utilizing these systems in the body.” \r\n\r\nCannabis is a good example of an herbal therapy that could have potential in this emerging scientific field, he says. \r\n\r\n“Cannabis affects the endocannabinoid system, which is a system of neurotransmitters that literally touches just about every bodily system we have,” Dr. Richter explains. “If we can optimize or improve endocannabinoid system function, we can have global effects on the body in ways that we couldn't do in any other way. And certainly not in any way that Western medicine has an ability to do.”\r\n\r\n### Cannabis Can Help Pets, But Legal Issues Stand in the Way \r\n\r\nInterest in cannabis and how it can be applied to pet health is rising—and for good reason: Both Heidi and Dr. Richter have witnessed the plant’s benefits. When Heidi began selling cannabidiol (CBD) products in her store four years ago, she received such amazing feedback that she decided to start her own line of hemp-derived CBD products. \r\n\r\n“[CBD] is a game changer as far as anything that I've ever seen in 15 years of doing this,” she says. “It’s replaced a lot of our supplements. … We specialize in having herbal remedies, homeopathic remedies or other types of food supplements, and nothing has ever come close to the kinds of testimonials that we get for CBD.”\r\n\r\nShe adds that the most common reasons people use CBD are for: anxiety, pain and inflammation, seizures and bodily support for animals with cancer. \r\n\r\nDr. Richter also sees cannabis’s potential. “I've seen cannabis improve quality of life and sometimes resolve disease symptoms in ways that Western medicine has no hope of doing,” he says. “Of any herb, supplement or medication that I’ve ever seen, cannabis has the broadest potential to have the most positive effect on patients. … But just like any pharmaceutical, it's not without its risks, and it has to be used responsibly.”\r\n\r\nThe wide-ranging application of cannabis’s therapeutic properties puts Dr. Richter in a difficult position: He knows cannabis can help with a lot of health issues. But as a veterinarian, he’s prohibited by the California Veterinary Medical Board (CVMA) from recommending it—or even simply discussing it. \r\n\r\n“Unless your veterinarian is willing to buck the trend and disobey the Veterinary Medical Board, you're stuck getting medical advice either from the kid working in a pet store, the person working behind the counter at the dispensary or whatever you can find on the Internet—and frankly, that’s a recipe for disaster,” he says. \r\n\r\nTo avoid a potential disaster, Dr. Richter is [gathering signatures in support of AB 2215, a bill that would allow veterinarians to recommend cannabis for their patients](https://petitions.moveon.org/sign/allow-compassionate-use). But research in the early 1990s, when the endocannabinoid system was discovered, revealed that any animal with a backbone, which includes not only mammals but also reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish, most likely have some form of that system as well. And it appears that they can – but getting and using cannabis for animals becomes complicated.\n\n`embed: https://www.instagram.com/p/BYy6CKhgBSD/`\n \n\n\n### Restrictions Hamper Research and Access\n\nVeterinarians and pet people alike have reported considerable [anecdotal evidence](https://www.rover.com/blog/medical-marijuana-for-dogs/)\nthat medical marijuana can help pets suffering from conditions like arthritis, seizures and cancer. In most of those cases, someone gave a beloved pet a dose of their own medical cannabis when it seemed that no other treatments for the animal’s condition were working – and that often led to either a cure for the condition or a significant reduction of symptoms.\n\nBut it isn’t [legal](https://www.avma.org/news/javmanews/pages/130615a.aspx)\nanywhere in the US for a veterinarian to prescribe medical marijuana for pets in distress. To date, 29 states and the District of Columbia have voted to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes. In those states, it’s possible to buy a variety of cannabis products of varying strengths with a doctor’s referral. But veterinarians are generally prohibited from making the same kind of referral for their patients under any circumstances.\n\nEven veterinarians who advocate for medical cannabis for animals acknowledge that using it can be risky. Not enough research has been done to determine exactly how compounds like THC affect various animal species, or what dosage is best for creatures of different sizes and health conditions.\n\nOne reason for this, according to some veterinarians, is that the veterinary community has been slow to take an interest in cannabis for medicinal purposes. But another reason is one that has hampered broader research on the human applications of cannabis too: tight government regulations on all aspects of studying medical applications of cannabis.\n\nThe Drug Enforcement Administration still lists marijuana as a Schedule I drug, right up there with heroin, LSD and magic mushrooms in its most restricted classification, reserved for substances with a high potential for addiction and no demonstrated medical applications. That classification makes it difficult to conduct federally funded studies to demonstrate medical applications of cannabis for both people and pets. And relatively few veterinary schools and private researchers are proposing studies of their own to advance the use of medical marijuana for pets, even though existing evidence suggests that it could have [powerful benefits](http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/cannabis-dog-can-help/)\n\n\n### CBD Products: Marijuana or Hemp? \n\nEven though medical cannabis may be hard to come by for pets, one of its compounds isn’t. THC is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and its most abundant compound. But cannabidiol, or CBD, is also plentiful, and it has no psychoactive properties.  \n\nCBD is often used for treating conditions such as chronic pain, nausea and lack of appetite, and anxiety – and it’s widely available for treating animals with those conditions too. But there’s a catch. The CBD in medicinal products such as oils, salves, creams and treats that are marketed for animals comes from hemp, not from marijuana.\n\nThe marijuana plant, cannabis sativa, is home to over a hundred compounds that work together to provide its benefits. Hemp does contain CBD, though, and that means it can be made into a variety of products that offer health benefits that are similar to those provided by true “medical marijuana.”   \n\nSome studies suggest CBD and THC work best in combination, but hemp based CBD-alone products are freely marketed and sold without the restrictions, however many consider this to be a legal gray area. The ease of selling hemp based CBD products for animals has led to an upsurge in the number of pet health outlets offering them in a variety of forms.\n\nHemp based products are easily available, but that doesn’t mean they’re all of equal value, or even [safe](https://www.projectcbd.org/claws-and-effect-use-of-medical-marijuana-for-pets). Like dietary supplements, these products are not standardized, or monitored for quality. They can contain other ingredients, some toxic, and the strength can be highly variable.  \n\n### Using Cannabis Safely For Pets\n\nCannabis medicines have been shown to help animals with many of the same conditions people have – anxiety, nausea, cancer, seizures and gastrointestinal problems, but resistance from mainstream veterinary practice and government restrictions on cannabis in general may make it hard for pet lovers to find the support and information they need to use cannabis effectively for their four legged friends.\n\nHolistic veterinarians and those experienced in complementary medicine can often offer information and guidance for the best ways to use cannabis products safely for an animal companion. His path as a conventional veterinarian led him to learn and adopt more holistic practices until, inevitably, he incorporated cannabis into his alternative treatments.  Now he is one of the most sought out experts on the effective use of cannabis to treat animals. When I moved out here after veterinary school I started by working both general practice and emergency.  After a number of years in practice I was looking for other ways to help my patients beyond what Western medicine had to offer me.  I got trained in acupuncture and chiropractic and began doing herbal therapy and a variety of other alternative treatments. I had a few pet owners come in and talk to me about their experiences trying cannabis on their animals. I sat down with Paul and his business partner Susan and we came up with three formulas for pets - a high CBD, a high THC, and an even ratio.  We’ve had enormous success since we put these formulations together two years ago.  When I started using cannabis it was this unbelievable eye-opening moment.  Here’s this medicine that is so unbelievably powerful and effective and almost completely unknown in the veterinary industry.  \n\n### Q: Can you share an example of a successful outcome treating an animal with cannabis? \n\nA: I had somebody come in with their cat that had chronic inflammatory bowel issues.  This kitty was on all kinds of medications.  The woman pretty much told me that unless I could do something to help this cat, she was going to have to put him to sleep because he was so miserable and there was nothing more to do.  We put him on some supplements and made some dietary alterations but without a doubt the thing that turned a corner for this cat was the cannabis.  \n\nLiterally within two days of putting this cat on cannabis he had his first normal bowel movement that he’d had in almost a year.  We were able to drastically improve this kitty’s life to the point where he was stable.  The owner was ecstatic.  It was so shocking to me that everything from western medicine had failed and something as simple as an extract from a plant literally in a day turns the cat around.\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/59406104149188001f32d1a3/embedded_images/5940627f2d29f108272f30f9/Screen_Shot_2017-06-13_at_2.51.17_PM.png) \n\n### Q: What is the most common reason pet owners bring their animals to you?\n\nA: Speaking broadly there are two groups of people that come to me.  Either they’ve tried everything, nothing has worked, and I’m their last resort, or they come in because they’re holistically minded people and they want to get started in that way before they move towards Western medicine.  We see people bring animals in for arthritis and back pain, seizure disorders, GI problems, stress and anxiety. Pretty much all the same sort of things people would seek medical help for.\n\n### What’s the main difference between treating animals and people with cannabis?\n\nI would say the indications and uses for cannabis in animals are almost exactly the same as they are in people.  The differences are in the dosing.  It’s just like any other medicine that any veterinarian would use, you have to calculate a dose.  The problem is that most people don’t know what those doses are in cannabis.  There’s such a huge information gap that you literally have to start from the beginning.  \n\nIf you ask a roomful of doctors or a roomful of veterinarians if they’ve heard of the endocannabinoid system, the vast majority of them will say no.  Every veterinarian I talk to is really interested to know more, it’s just that nobody’s ever taught them and they’ve never had the opportunity to learn. Now with the legal environment the way that it is, they’re literally being threatened away from it.  \n\n### Q: Would you say the legal environment is one of the biggest challenges you face?\n\nA: By far and away the biggest challenges are the legal issue and the lack of understanding on the veterinary community’s part of what they have at their fingertips. As of beginning of this year, the veterinary board has taken hard stance in regards to cannabis and pets and threatening vets licenses should they even have the discussion with clients.  \n\nThe rationale is because Prop 215 was very specific about medical cannabis being for humans. I’m working with the California Veterinary Association in hopes that legislation will introduce a bill that will amend and allow cannabis for animals.  Right now veterinarians don’t realize how valuable cannabis can be and the sad thing is that it may ultimately take a pharmaceutical company to wake them up.  That’s where information tends to come from and you can say what you want about that, it just is what it is.  \n\n### Q: What motivates you and what is your biggest area of passion?\n\nA: My passion first and foremost is always about the animals and making pets better.  Primarily, I approach that through integrative medicine, combining western medical care with all the alternatives out there.  There are a finite number of people and animals I can see in my office, so I’ve started to look at what I can do to get the word out to other pet owners to understand the options that are out there.  \n\n### Q: Where can pet-owners find more information about using cannabis for their pets?\n\nA: I’ve got a book on integrative medicine for dogs and cats coming out in August that has a whole chapter dedicated to cannabis.  \n\n### Q: Any last words you want to impart to the public?\n\nA: If this is something you’re interested in, I encourage people to please talk to your veterinarian or find some resources. Don’t wing it, don’t try to extrapolate a dose for your cat or dog as if they’re a small person.  It just doesn’t really work that way and it’s a recipe for trouble. Throw cannabis into the mix and allow your mind to expand right alongside the universe.
