Summer days are often spent drinking poolside cocktails and afternoon wine, which may seem refreshing in the moment, but inevitably lead to dehydration, a headache and an early bedtime. For those who want to stay refreshed, relaxed and bright-eyed from the pool into the night, we have an alternative for you— spritzers infused with cannabidiol (CBD). \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nMocktails have become an increasingly trendy way to enjoy a delicious beverage while maintaining sobriety, offering all the novelty and deliciousness of a fancy drink, minus the alcohol. With the increasing availability of CBD products, a new health trend is on the rise. Simply add a dose of CBD to your mocktail for a new twist that takes the edge off without making you feel high. Use this easy recipe to inspire other CBD-infused flavor combinations you can experiment with. The possibilities are endless—spritz away. \n\nAs with all cannabis recipes, the dosing can and should be altered to your preference. For drink recipes I recommend using a CBD tincture because it's easy to measure and dissolves completely into the beverage. \n\nThis recipe makes about six servings, and can be made even more simple if you decide to use store bought lemonade. Simply add the appropriate dosage of CBD tincture and top with a spritz. \n\nRELATED: [DIY RECIPE: HEMP CBD BLUEBERRY BREAKFAST SMOOTHIE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5b36bb6fbf4c4d000a0e7527/diy-recipe-hemp-cbd-blueberry-breakfast-smoothie)\n\n### Ingredients for CBD-Infused Lemonade Spritzer With Basil\n\n* 6–8 lemons\n* 1 cup sugar (option to substitute sugar with honey, maple syrup or preferred sweetener)\n* 5 cups water\n* 1 bunch basil\n* 1 cup seltzer\n* 1–3 tsp CBD tincture or CBD-infused honey*\n\n*Note: Always refer to product packaging to infer correct dosage of each serving. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5994e65504d088060b25e2b9/embedded_images/5994e65804d088060b25e2ba/Screen_Shot_2017-08-16_at_5.40.51_PM.png)\nOur CBD lemonade spritzer is the perfect alcohol replacement.\n \n### How To Make CBD-Infused Lemonade Spritzer With Basil\n\n1. Popsicles are an especially refreshing way to cool down on a hot day. The simple cherry or grape popsicles are a thing of the past giving way to the more sophisticated use of fresh fruit, herbs and even spices like cardamom. Popsicles also happen to be a fantastic medium for getting your daily dose of cannabis in a new, if not chilly, way. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\nMy marijuana-infused popsicles are so fresh and delicious, you'll want to share my DIY recipe with all of your friends. They're the perfect accompaniment to a summer barbecue or as a a lovely way to cleanse your palette. Like all of the recipes we have, you can choose the cannabis dosage that works best for you.\n\n### Cannabis-Infused Popsicles With Watermelon, Mint & Lime\n\nYou can make these popsicles with a high CBD or high THC tincture, depending on your desires and needs. The popsicles can also be medicated in a few different ways, either through the use of medicated coconut oil, medicated simple syrup, or through the simple mixing of tincture into the popsicle mix. My preferred method is with a cannabis tincture, but I'll share three different ways to make an ice pop.\n\nRELATED: [MARIJUANA-INFUSED COCONUT MILK](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57fae620299fb7000b811f3f/diy-recipe-marijuana-infused-coconut-milk)\n\nHere's a recipe for my favorite refreshing medicated popsicles that are slightly sweet, extremely refreshing and full of herbaceous bite.\n\n### Ingredients \n\n* 3 cups crushed seedless watermelon\n* 1 tablespoon lime juice\n* cannabis tincture (add depending on desired strength)\n\n-or-\n\n* 1-3 tbsp [medicated simple syrup](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5978b167aa0db4002124d9c0/recipe-for-diy-cannabis-infused-tropical-mule-cocktail) (depending on desired strength and sweetness)\n\n-or-\n\n* 1-3 tbsp [medicated coconut oil](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56d69dde22efe4000b00004c/how-to-make-marijuana-coconut-oil-recipe)\n\n* agave or honey to taste\n* popsicle sticks\n\n### How To\n\nBlend all of the ingredients in a blender or with a hand whisk. Pour the mixture into popsicle molds and freeze until frozen solid, usually a couple of hours. If you don't have molds, you can pour the mixture into paper cups. When popsicles are half frozen, insert popsicle sticks. \n\nYou can make this recipe with any mix of fruits, citrus juice and herbs that you like. Strawberry and lime are another great combination, as well as strawberry and basil. Tropical popsicles made with mango and pineapple are also a refreshing treat, especially when medicated with coconut oil for an added tropical flare. \n\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. One restaurant in California is getting a head start on the recreational cannabis market by offering their clientele a unique spin on the typical cocktail. Cafe Flore in San Francisco is offering cannabis-infused (hemp-derived) cocktails before cannabis becomes recreationally legalized in the state.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\nCafe Flore, an iconic Castro bar, is hoping to be on the forefront of cannabis infused food, drinks, and cocktails. Currently, they're mixing up cocktails made with a high quality hemp-derived CBD extract, which was formulated with the help of Chris Emerson, the co founder of [Level Blends](https://www.hellomd.com/biz/level) vape cartridges. Hemp based products, although derived from cannabis, don't contain THC, the mind altering cannabinoid for which marijuana is so well known for. \n\nThe owners of the cafe, Aaron Silverman and Terrance Alan, have enlisted the help of Chris Longoria, the bar manager at 1760 to create their new line of CBD-infused cocktails. The cocktails also feature fragrant terpene oils, which help to compliment the unique flavor profiles from the specific strains of cannabis used to craft the drinks. Cafe Flore is on the cutting edge of the cannabis infused drinks, but if you can't travel to San Francisco to try these cannabis cocktails, you can still make your own.\n\nI find that having a great cannabis cocktail is one of the best ways to relax at the end of the day. I enjoy making my drinks with high CBD strains of cannabis to provide me with anti-inflammatory and anxiety-relieving benefits without any of the mind altering effects. One of the easiest ways to combine cannabis with your cocktails is through the creation of a simple syrup infused with the flower of your choice. \n\nDepending on your taste, select cannabis flowers that you enjoy, but be aware of the strength of the strain you're choosing and how that could affect the overall strength of your drink. High CBD strains are a great place to start with cannabis-infused drinks in order to gain a better understanding of how the combination of cannabis and alcohol can affect you. I personally like Electra-Tsu, ACDC and Harlequin as my preferred high CBD strains.\n\n### Make a Cannabis-Infused Simple Syrup\n\nIngredients:\n\n* 2 cups water\n* 1 cup honey\n* 4 grams of decarboxylated, ground cannabis\n* 1 tbsp of vegetable derived lecithin\n\nHow To:\n\n* Boil water in a saucepan.\n* Reduce the temperature of the water and dissolve honey in the water.\n* Add cannabis.\n* Reduce heat to around 160 degrees F.\n* Cover and allow to simmer for 30 minutes.\n* Reduce heat to low and add lecithin.\n* Cook for about 10 minutes while stirring .\n* Strain through cheese cloth into a bowl placed in another bowl full of ice.\n\nRecipe note: You can also use 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar to make the simple syrup if you'd rather make it with sugar instead of honey.\n\n### Recipe for Tropical Mule Cocktail\n\nHere is a recipe for a tropical inspired mule cocktail with a medicated twist. This drink is perfect to enjoy throughout the warm summer months to will help you calm down after a long day. A sip of this drink makes me feel like I am spending my evening in a tropical paradise. This recipe uses ginger simple syrup, which can be made by adding a 1-inch piece of peeled and sliced ginger to the recipe while making the cannabis-infused simple syrup. The ginger can be added to the syrup at the same time the cannabis is added. \n\nIngredients:\n\n* 2 handfuls of crushed ice (either made from water or coconut water)\n* 2 oz of cannabis-infused ginger simple syrup\n* 1 oz coconut cream\n* 1 oz lime juice\n* 1/2 oz orange juice\n* 1 oz dark rum\n* 4 oz sparkling water\n* Aromatic bitters (optional)\n\nInstructions:\n\n* Add all ingredients but bitters and sparkling water to a blender.\n* Blend until combined.\n* Pour into a glass and top with sparkling water. If using bitters, add a few dots on the top of the drink.\n\nThis recipe is just a starting place, feel free to try to infuse any of your favorite cocktail recipes with the help of cannabis-infused simple syrup.\n\nEnjoy.\n\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. No matter where you live, summer brings out a burst of bright colorful fruit that tastes as delicious as it looks. I love eating more berries and stone fruit than I can count when summer rolls around and, to me, there is also something peaceful and amazing about processing all of that fresh fruit into delicious jam. \n\nJam is a great way to preserve the bounty of summer, but it is also a great way to use delicious fresh fruit. Let’s be honest, all of us sometimes buy fruit with the intention of eating it quickly, but then all of the sudden it is going soft in the back of our fridge. So, why not add some cannabis to your homemade jam to create a delicious treat that is full of medicinal benefits?\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nToday, I am sharing two delicious jam recipes with you, one that is traditional and one that is a low sugar spin on the classic jam. Both recipes can be used to make jam with a variety of different fruits, so you can have all of the different flavors of summer in the form of delicious of cannabis infused jam. Stone fruits and berries are both a great option, and they can be mixed and matched to create delicious combinations. Both recipes are infused with cannabis through the use of Canna-honey, which adds sweetness and medication.\n\n### Canna-Honey - the Sweet Foundation\n\nCanna-Honey is the sugary foundation for your jam and is infused with your choice of cannabis.\n\n>* 1 oz cannabis of your choice\n* 5 lbs honey\n* cheesecloth and cooking twine\n* crock pot\n\nBundle the cannabis in the cheesecloth and tie off with cooking twine. Place cannabis cheesecloth in the crockpot and cover with honey. Cook on low for five hours, stirring occasionally. Allow to cool for 24 hours and remove the cannabis and squeeze it to extract all of the excess honey. Stir and pour into jars. \n\nRELATED:[MARIJUANA FIRE CRACKER RECIPE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56de6921c60fd5000c00007d/marijuana-fire-crackers-recipe)\n\n### Classic Canna-Jam\n\n>* 3 cups sugar\n* 1/4 cup lemon juice\n* 4 cups fresh fruit of your choice\n* 1/4 cup canna-honey\n\nCombine lemon juice and sugar after low heat, stir until all of the sugar is dissolved. Add fruit and cook for 20 minutes. Add mixture to a jar, or multiple jars, and stir in canna-honey. \n\nThe next recipe is great if you are looking for a slightly healthier option when it comes to jam. Sugar is what helps jam gain its texture, so with less sugar jam does not have the same texture. In this next recipe, we have replaced the sugar with chia seeds, which absorb some liquid and create the jam-like texture. This recipe is great with fruits that are naturally sweet and do not need the assistance of large amounts of sugar. Chia seeds also provide a nutritional boost to this jam, and it is great served like traditional jam on toast, or mixed in to oatmeal or yogurt!\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/591b216041f260002ec02b45/embedded_images/591b216341f260002ec02b46/Screen_Shot_2017-05-16_at_8.56.19_AM.png)\n \n### Chia Canna-Jam\n\n>* 4 cups fresh fruit of your choice\n* 1 tablespoon lemon juice\n* 1/4 cup canna-honey\n* 1/4 cup chia seeds\n\nCook down fruit in a pan over low/medium heat, add a splash of water if needed to help cook down the fruit. As the fruit starts to breakdown, assist it by breaking up the fruit with a fork or spoon. Take jam off the heat and stir in chia seeds, lemon juice, and canna-honey. The jam will be loose at first, but once it is cooled in the refrigerator it will continue to jell as the seeds absorb some liquid. \n\nBoth of these jams can be customized to your taste. Feel free to add different kinds of citrus in the form of juice and/or zest or mix and match fruits. If you are craving canna-jam outside of the summer season, you can also use frozen berries to create jam - simply add more cooking time to the process to breakdown the fruit. Canna-jam is an easy way to add a delicious, nutritious, and medicinal boost to your morning. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Similar to CBD, it is an anti-inflammatory, nuero-protective, anti-emetic, and has anti-proliferative properties, among other qualities. Anecdotally, patients have indicated it helps with insomnia, pain, muscle spasms and even Alzheimer's. When consumed in its raw form, from the plant itself, it contains a high amount of terpenes and antioxidant content, both of which hold tremendous therapeutic value on their own.\n\nRELATED: [COOKING WITH CANNABIS](https://www.hellomd.com/learn/recipes-and-diy)\n\nIt's not easy to find reliable sources of THCA and the reality is, the best way to consume it is directly from the trimmings of a live cannabis plant. Lucky for me, we had an upcoming cannabis juicing segment on our filming schedule, so we were given two large bags of cannabis leaves from Nurit, the cofounder of ONA.Life.\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58caf7e900731f003a2dfe76/embedded_images/58caf7ec00731f003a2dfe77/Screen_Shot_2017-03-16_at_1.14.35_PM.png) \nChris and I with 2 large bags of cannabis leaves and 5lbs of frozen sausage (don't ask).\n\n### Non Psychoactive Cannabis Smoothie with THCA\n\nEvery morning, after exercising, I make a green smoothie to start the day. So, this morning I was excited to wake up and have a ton of cannabis leaves so I could add THCA into the mix. What surprised me most about adding the cannabis was how incredibly flavorful it was, you can really taste the terpenes. I absolutely loved it. Cannabis leaves need to be in my fridge waiting for me every morning from now on.\n\nToday, I will divulge my secret smoothie recipe that keeps me happy, healthy and energized for most of the day. This is my everyday recipe with fresh cannabis leaves added in.\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58caf7e900731f003a2dfe76/embedded_images/58caf7ee00731f003a2dfe78/Screen_Shot_2017-03-16_at_1.38.35_PM.png) \nThe smoothie in action.\n\n### Ingredients\n\nI must admit I am not prescriptive with quantities as I am liberal in my proportions. I pack my smoothies full of greens and fresh organic fruit as well as spices.\n\n>1 dash of nutmeg\n\n>1 dash of cinnamon\n\n>1 dash of tumeric\n\n>a smidge of cayenne pepper (be careful!)\n\n>a smidge of pink himalayan salt (yes, it's good!)\n\n>1 teaspoon chia seeds\n\n>1/2 teaspoon of spirulina or any type of superfood powder\n\n>1 teaspoon of local organic unprocessed honey\n\n> 1 1/2 cup of either vanilla almond milk or coconut water\n\n>1 massive handful of organic spinach\n\n>1 handful of organic frozen mango (I like this as it makes the smoothie cold)\n\n>1 big banana (avocado also adds a creamy, thick texture as a substitute)\n\n>1 whole tangerine with the skin (good for the extra terpenes)\n\n>1 small apple\n\n>2-3 oz. of washed raw cannabis trim-the leaves\n\n### How To: Mix It!\n\nI use my Nutri Bullet, but anything like a Vitamix can work well. Bulletproof coffee is made from a combination of grass-fed butter, coffee and brain octane oil, a specially extracted coconut oil that can be bought online or at many different health food stores. \n\nThe drink combines three blended ingredients to create a frothy coffee beverage reminiscent of a latte. It has become especially popular in recent years alongside the trend of paleo and whole food-focused diets. The creator of bulletproof coffee, Dave Asprey, first had the idea for the buttery concoction when he was in Tibet at 18,000 feet above sea level. He was given a drink made from tea and yak butter that made him feel rejuvenated and energized. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThe self-proclaimed “biohacker” set out to create a drink inspired by that same yak butter tea that brought him energy and mental clarity. He formulated bulletproof coffee with clean coffee beans, grass-fed butter and brain octane oil. The butter gives healthy milk fats without denatured casein, which is present in milk and cream, while the brain octane oil provides benefits to brain function and supports ketosis. The coffee itself is helpful in boosting metabolism and powering your brain through the day. Many health food personalities and celebrities swear by it as a morning boost, without any afternoon crash because of the way the fat allows your body to process the caffeine. \n\nRELATED: [ANTI-INFLAMMATORY RECIPE FOR TURMERIC CBD TONIC](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57573cdebcdaa90007000129/an-anti-inflammatory-recipe-for-turmeric-cbd-tonic)\n\n### Cannabis & Healthy Fats\n\nCannabis isn't a novel addition to coffee or butter. Special cannabis clubs enjoyed coffee spiked with marijuana in Paris in the 1800s. The concoction that they drank, which was made of spices, sugar, butter, cannabis and coffee, came from middle eastern traditions that the men had witnessed and then adopted. \n\nAdding cannabis to your morning coffee can provide you with an easy administration of your medication, and drinking your cannabis bulletproof cannabis coffee helps you better process cannabinoids due to the presence of healthy fats from both the butter and coconut oil. Here's how to boost your morning with cannabis-infused bulletproof coffee.\n\n### Ingredients\n\n* 1–2 cups of coffee of your choice\n\n* 1–2 tbsp brain octane oil or coconut oil\n\n* 1–2 tbsp grass-fed cannabutter* (we recommend you make you cannabis butter from scratch; check out our [HelloMD Cannabutter recipe](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56b27915fe98a1000c000243/diy-recipe-cannabutter-or-cannabis-butter). You can use high-quality grass-fed butter to get the full beneficial effects from bulletproof coffee)\n\n* Any other additions you would like - many people enjoy adding flavorings, like cinnamon or vanilla extract, a sweeter like stevia, or other boosters like collagen peptides\n\n### How To\n\nBlend all of the ingredients together in a blender until the coffee appears frothy. Serve and enjoy.\n\n*Make sure you pay attention to the strength of your cannabutter. You may find that a tablespoon or two of butter is too high a cannabis dose. It may be a good idea to make a less potent batch of cannabutter to enjoy with your bulletproof coffee. \n\nIf you're new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56201c206430320006bb0000/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. My chronic insomnia has me feeling exhausted almost on a daily basis. And my sleepless nights throw off my schedule as I'm often too tired to complete routine tasks like buying groceries or hitting the gym. \n\nHaving insomnia is not only frustrating, but it can also make you more susceptible to viruses and colds. It turns out one in three Americans will experience insomnia at some point in their lives. Whether it's a chronic condition for you, or caused by an external factor like pain due to a recent injury, insomnia can cause extreme disruption to your daily life. \n\n### Sleeping Pills Aren’t a Great Solution for Insomnia\n\nSleeping pills are often the only advertised option for the many people who struggle with sleep. Many sleeping pills are benzodiazepines, which can be addictive with sustained use. Other sleeping pills, like Ambien, aren't as habit forming, but can have some other problematic side effects. \n\nRELATED: [INTERESTED IN KNOWING ABOUT VAPORIZING? Plus, if you're anything like me, the idea of depending on a pill to fall asleep every night doesn’t make you feel all that great. \n\nThat's why I've tried to find natural alternatives to taking pharmaceuticals. Cannabis allows me a natural alternative for promoting sleep. It helps ease me into sleep without any side effects that can come from sleeping pills the doctor has prescribed. Both cannabinoids THC and CBD help get me to sleep. And they help me stay asleep through the course of the night. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58065f9a454dca00094ad7b7/embedded_images/58065f9c454dca00094ad7b9/Screen_Shot_2016-10-18_at_10.43.18_AM.png)\n \n### DIY Cannabis-Infused Honey\n\nCannabis honey has been a way for me to incorporate my cannabis consumption into my nightly before-bedtime routine. Cannabis honey is easy to make and can be taken on its own or mixed into tea. Here's how to make cannabis [honey](https://marijuanapatients.org/marijuana-infused-honey/). \n\n### What You Need\n\n>* One ounce of ground cannabis\n\n>* 5 pounds of honey\n\n>* Cheese cloth and cooking twine\n\n>* Slow cooker\n\n\n### How to Make It\n\nFirst wrap the cannabis in cheese cloth and tie it off with the twine. Add the cannabis to the slow cooker and pour the honey all over it. Run the slow cooker on low for five hours and be sure to stir it occasionally. Turn the slow cooker off and let the honey cool for up to 24 hours. I like to sterilize a bell jar for the honey so that I can store it in a cool, dry place for up to eight months.\n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58065f9a454dca00094ad7b7/embedded_images/58065f9e454dca00094ad7ba/Screen_Shot_2016-10-18_at_10.43.44_AM.png) \n\n### Selecting your Cannabis\n\nThe strain of cannabis you choose is up to you because each person responds differently to varying levels of THC and CBD. Often indica strains are a good choice for insomnia, and different balances of CBD and THC can be helpful based on the cause of your insomnia. \n\nCheck out suggestions for some [good strains of cannabis for insomnia](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/the-10-best-marijuana-strains-for-insomnia). Also consider looking for strains of cannabis that are produced without pesticides, because whatever pesticides are on your cannabis will get transferred into your honey. I like to select an organic honey that's locally produced, because the quality of your ingredients factors into the quality of your finished product. \n\nThis cannabis-infused honey recipe can also be made in smaller batches depending on what works best for you. I love to mix cannabis-infused honey into my nightly tea. The slow release of cannabinoids due to the edible format of the marijuana helps me relax and keeps me asleep all night long. I wake up happy and refreshed. \n\nDo you have questions about about cannabis? Ask a question on [HelloMD's New Answers](https://www.hellomd.com/answers). Sava offers next day delivery for patients throughout California and is one of the newest collectives gaining a passionate following of enthusiastic medicinal cannabis patients. Andrea is extremely knowledgeable about cannabis and here she shares her Ayurvedic recipe for a CBD tonic/tea.\n\n### The Tea\nBased on the Ayurvedic recipe for “Golden Milk”, this tea combines turmeric, ginger, coconut oil, honey, and CBD to provide relief from inflammation, arthritis, sore muscles, hangover, and a range of other maladies. \n\n### Turmeric\nTurmeric has long been used in South Asia for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. \nOn the Japanese island of Okinawa - where the population has one of the longest average lifespans - turmeric tea is a staple of daily life. In India, turmeric was first used in food and was then discovered to have a range of medicinal benefits - antiseptic, anti-inflammatory detoxifying. It has also been shown to prevent and reverse the effects of Alzheimer's and is currently being studied for its anti-cancer effects. \n\n### Curcumin\nCurcumin, the ingredient in turmeric that makes it yellow and gives it spice, is what science attributes many of its healing properties. In order for your body to absorb the curcumin, it is paired with both a fat and with black pepper. \n\n### Piperine\nPiperine, a compound found in black pepper, has been shown to increase the bioavailability of otherwise hard to absorb curcumin by 2000%. Without the piperine, curcumin is metabolized in the liver and intestinal wall. When I make this tonic, I either add in or leave out black pepper based on how I feel. If I want my liver and intestinal wall to receive the benefits - maybe after a large rich meal or one too many glasses of wine - I leave the pepper out. If I want relief from joint or muscle pain or want my entire body to reap the effects, I add pepper in. Fat also assist with absorption, hence coconut oil which has its own host of benefits. \n\n### Ginger\nGinger, another powerful root with a big reputation, has been shown time and time again to have strong anti-inflammatory properties without the side effects of pharmaceuticalsas well as anti-oxidative and anti-cancer effects (5). It has also long been used to soothe the digestive system. \n\n### Cannabidiol\nCannabidiol, also known as CBD, is an important medicinal cannabinoid that produces no “high.” CBD relieves pain and anxiety, and research has shown it to have antibacterial, anti-convulsive, anti-carcinogenic, anxiolytic, antidepressant, analgesic, antiemetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-ischemic, antispasmodic, antipsychotic, anti-insomnia and neuroprotection properties.\n\n### How To\n\nMix all of the ingredients together with a spoonful of honey and you have a delicious health tonic that can be used for specific ailments or as an everyday preventative medicine. \n\nIngredients \n>- ½ to 1 inch of turmeric root (or a tsp of turmeric powder)\n- ½ to 1 inch of ginger root\n- 1 tsp coconut oil\n- 1 cup of your favorite milk (almond or hemp is delicious!)\n- 1 cup of warm water\n- 2 tsp honey\n- Sprinkle of black pepper\n- Drops of high CBD tincture\n\nWarm the milk. Add all other ingredients to a blender. Combine in your favorite mug and enjoy! \n\nAlternately, all ingredients can be blended together cool and served over ice. \n\nThis can be made in a larger batch and store in your refrigerator for several days or you can combine all ingredients, aside from milk and water, into a paste that you keep for up to a week adding to hot water and milk when you want a cup. Adjust the honey, pepper, ginger, and turmeric depending on your flavor preferences - whether you like things spicy or sweet - and drink to good health. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Although cannabis can be a great way of treating chronic\nconditions\nand their life-interrupting symptoms, not all patients want to use a\ntraditional consumption method like smoking or vaping. Fortunately,\nthere's more than one way to consume cannabis. One way, in particular,\nis creating a cannabis-infused vegetable glycerine tincture.\n\nWhat Is Vegetable Glycerine?\n----------------------------\n\nAlthough the term vegetable glycerine may sound unfamiliar, this\nparticular ingredient is found in many common foods - and it can be a\ngreat way to sneak cannabis into a diet. Vegetable glycerine is a\nbyproduct of compounds made in manufacturing, and the processed\nvegetables are usually genetically modified. That means that before\nmaking a vegetable glycerine tincture with cannabis, you should choose a\ngood and trustworthy source of high quality vegetable glycerine.\n\nUsing Vegetable Glycerine in Everyday Life\n------------------------------------------\n\nVegetable glycerine tends to have a very mild taste, meaning that it can\nbe added to nearly any food or beverage, or even consumed directly. When\na batch of cannabis-infused vegetable glycerine is made, it should be\nstored in a glass container (since metal containers can leach) and can\nbe used for up to a year.\n\nVegetable Glycerine Recipe\n--------------------------\n\nBefore mixing cannabis into vegetable glycerine, you should decide\nwhether or not you want to decarboxylate the cannabis buds.\nDecarboxylation uses heat to modify the THCA in cannabis to the \npsychoactive THC. Patients will need to weigh whether or not this would\nbe beneficial to their own care.\n\nCombine a half ounce of cannabis buds with 2 cups of high quality\nvegetable glycerine in a glass container that you can seal shut, such as\na Mason jar. Shake the container to thoroughly mix the cannabis and\nglycerine. Then, line a slow cooker with a towel and fill halfway with\nwater. Place the jar in the cooker and very slowly heat the mixture for\nabout 24 hours. Gently shake several times during the process, using\nheating pads to protect your hands from hot jars. The longer the\ntincture brews, the stronger it will be.\n\nAfter consistent warming, remove the jar carefully, shake well, take off\nthe lid and allow it to cool. Once cool, strain the cannabis-infused\nvegetable glycerine tincture, using a metal strainer or cheesecloth. The\nstrained buds can be used to make cannabis\ntea or to infuse other tinctures, beverages or foods. Store the remaining\nvegetable glycerine in a glass jar or a dropper bottle. Add this\ntincture as desired to coffee, tea, soup or nearly any other type of\nfood or beverage. Be careful, however, to add after cooking so that the\nconcentration is not further altered by heat.\n\nMaking Tinctures Faster\n-----------------------\n\nYou can save some time by using a [Magical Butter\nMachine](https://magicalbutter.com/). This machine comes with a specific\ntincture setting that can reduce the total time required from 24 hours\ndown to just 4 hours. Like the slow cooker method, timing can be\nadjusted to increase or decrease the strength of the cannabis\nconcentration in the vegetable glycerine. For a stronger tincture, run\nfor several of the 4-hour settings. If you're just starting out, run for\nless time to start with a weaker tincture.\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.342281879194631,"src":"/static/6525961f5809ec2b2afc3b60f252e1f1/08045/6e047cc73024c3886237594769d5c805.jpg","srcSet":"/static/6525961f5809ec2b2afc3b60f252e1f1/f836f/6e047cc73024c3886237594769d5c805.jpg 200w,\n/static/6525961f5809ec2b2afc3b60f252e1f1/2244e/6e047cc73024c3886237594769d5c805.jpg 400w,\n/static/6525961f5809ec2b2afc3b60f252e1f1/08045/6e047cc73024c3886237594769d5c805.jpg 799w","srcWebp":"/static/6525961f5809ec2b2afc3b60f252e1f1/c622d/6e047cc73024c3886237594769d5c805.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/6525961f5809ec2b2afc3b60f252e1f1/61e93/6e047cc73024c3886237594769d5c805.webp 200w,\n/static/6525961f5809ec2b2afc3b60f252e1f1/1f5c5/6e047cc73024c3886237594769d5c805.webp 400w,\n/static/6525961f5809ec2b2afc3b60f252e1f1/c622d/6e047cc73024c3886237594769d5c805.webp 799w","sizes":"(max-width: 799px) 100vw, 799px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2076-markdown","title":"Marijuana Rice Krispie Treats: Recipe","slug":"marijuana-rice-krispie-treats-recipe","content":"Anyone looking for another way to ingest medical marijuana should give\nmarijuana Rice Krispies treats a try. Fortunately, the recipe is among the simplest available when it\ncomes to desserts that contain marijuana, with a short ingredients list\nand just a few easy steps. Without further ado, here's how to make\nmarijuana Rice Krispies treats.\n\nList of Ingredients\n-------------------\n\n- 4 cups of miniature marshmallows\n- 5 cups of crisp rice cereal (either Rice Krispies or another brand)\n- 1/4 cup [cannabis\n butter](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56b27915fe98a1000c000243/diy-recipe-cannabutter-or-cannabis-butter)\n\nEquipment To Have on Hand\n-------------------------\n\n- 13 x 9-inch baking pan\n- Wax paper or a buttered spatula\n- Saucepan\n\nBaking Directions\n-----------------\n\n1. Turn a stove burner on low and place the saucepan on it.\n2. Add the cannabis butter to the pan so it can begin to melt.\n3. Add the miniature marshmallows to the pan, stirring to ensure they\n start to melt and mix together.\n4. Continue to cook butter and marshmallow mixture for another 2\n minutes, stirring frequently.\n5. Remove the saucepan from the heat.\n6. Add the crisp rice cereal and stir until the butter and marshmallow\n mixture is completely coated with the cereal.\n7. Use either wax paper or a buttered spatula to transfer the mixture\n from the saucepan to the greased 13 x 9-inch pan, pressing the\n mixture into the pan until it looks even.\n8. Allow the Rice Krispies treats mixture to cool, and then cut it into\n squares that measure 2 x 2 inches.\n9. Try them out and get ready to feel great.\n10. To store these marijuana Rice Krispies treats, wrap them in plastic\n wrap or put them in a covered container in the refrigerator for up\n to 1 week for best results.\n\nCustomizing Marijuana Rice Krispies Treats\n-------------------------------------------\n\nAs cereal fans might guess, these treats can be made in a few different\nways, since there are some similar cereal options on the market.\nChocolate lovers can use Cocoa Krispies, while people who have fruitier\ntastes might enjoy Fruity Pebbles instead. Of course, either name brand\nor generic cereals can be used with this recipe.\n\nIn addition, anyone looking to change up this recipe even more can add a\nnumber of fun treats. Examples include sprinkles, chocolate chips,\nbutterscotch pieces, M&Ms and Reese's Pieces, to name just a few\noptions. People who bake this recipe can also top the treats off with\nchocolate syrup, caramel syrup or Nutella drizzled over them as they\ncool.\n\nCannabis users may find it fun to experiment with this recipe, and this\napplies not only to tasty additions like candy, but also cannabis.\nThat's because, while many people will find one-quarter cup of cannabis\nbutter to be sufficient for their medicinal needs, some others might\nwant to increase it to one-half cup if these aren't strong enough. Of\ncourse, some people might need less if they're just getting started with\n[marijuana\nedibles](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5640eb06510f78000b000014/9-foolproof-rules-for-consuming-cannabis-edibles).\nThe key is to experiment with these just as bakers do with any dessert.\n\nWhen these are ready to enjoy, be sure to start slowly by eating just\none 2 x 2-inch square. On average, it can take from 30 minutes to 90\nminutes for edibles to affect anyone who eats them, so someone new to\nmarijuana treats of any kind should wait about that long before having\nanother delicious marijuana Rice Krispies treat.\n\n[Photo credit](https://www.flickr.com/photos/branditressler/5315039798/in/photolist-96EYad-9Bd1Rd-4b4pdE-9BaakH-9BaapH-9BaanZ-4kgsZn-9Ba8ET-9Bd3CU-9BaaoT-groVTd-grrmzR-grqyjs-grp3Kh-9fTDcX-8ePefd-grrPAY-gpd5tk-o6M1yP-bv3CYi-5v7K8d-9Bd1T1-pnV7zL-5YuRjU-7CPw9u-7neEiZ-9Bd3zu-3jnujw-5YuR31-bv3CV8-bv3CWR-7FX8DC-dKpY58-6HAHur-gGZwf8-dKvr5b-f39Cpo-grr4yt-gGYM8j-bPfMsT-c7uRy-c7uRA-njBbwA-4h1RdE-sD1H7-aiXTfk-gGZvNX-dKpXNR-dioV14-8hYoB8)\n","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.492537313432836,"src":"/static/b4901f46e708d88b3878d0d29a7e1275/ee604/22319182e9c02dc7c9edd10bc1951794.png","srcSet":"/static/b4901f46e708d88b3878d0d29a7e1275/69585/22319182e9c02dc7c9edd10bc1951794.png 200w,\n/static/b4901f46e708d88b3878d0d29a7e1275/497c6/22319182e9c02dc7c9edd10bc1951794.png 400w,\n/static/b4901f46e708d88b3878d0d29a7e1275/ee604/22319182e9c02dc7c9edd10bc1951794.png 800w,\n/static/b4901f46e708d88b3878d0d29a7e1275/d93e2/22319182e9c02dc7c9edd10bc1951794.png 906w","srcWebp":"/static/b4901f46e708d88b3878d0d29a7e1275/58556/22319182e9c02dc7c9edd10bc1951794.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/b4901f46e708d88b3878d0d29a7e1275/61e93/22319182e9c02dc7c9edd10bc1951794.webp 200w,\n/static/b4901f46e708d88b3878d0d29a7e1275/1f5c5/22319182e9c02dc7c9edd10bc1951794.webp 400w,\n/static/b4901f46e708d88b3878d0d29a7e1275/58556/22319182e9c02dc7c9edd10bc1951794.webp 800w,\n/static/b4901f46e708d88b3878d0d29a7e1275/5b058/22319182e9c02dc7c9edd10bc1951794.webp 906w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2154-markdown","title":"Cooking With Cannabis","slug":"cooking-with-cannabis","content":"For people who want to consume marijuana but don't want to inhale it,\ncooking with the herb is a fantastic alternative. There are literally\nhundreds of ways to cook with cannabis, and consumers who learn to make\ntasty edibles in their own kitchens will enjoy experimenting with new\nrecipes for years to come. Here's an overview of what budding marijuana\nchefs need to know.\n\n**Cannabis Cooking 101**\n\nCooking with cannabis is a little more complicated than taking the\nentire plant and tossing it into brownie batter. In addition to\nproducing some unfortunate-tasting brownies nobody would want to eat,\ndoing so would also defeat the purpose of cooking with cannabis, as the\nherb needs to be processed (via heat) in order to decarboxylate and\nbecome psychoactive. Left to its own devices, the human body can't\ndigest the THC found in raw cannabis. Because of this, most [cannabis\nrecipes](https://www.hellomd.com/learn/recipes-and-diy)\nrequire a form of cannabis extract, such as cannabutter or\ncannabis-infused oil.\n\nBecause cannabis is fat-soluble (stored in fat), it must always be\ncooked with some form of fat -- like butter, an oil, or milk. This\nallows the compounds within the cannabis to release into the fat,\nmaximizing the effects of the plant and creating a better-tasting\nedible.\n\n**The Process of Decarboxylation**\n\n[Decarboxylation](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56de6bd6c60fd50008000081/decarboxylating-marijuana-why-its-important) is the process cannabis must go through *before* being\nused for cooking, and also before being included in any form of\ncannabutter or cannabis-infused oil. Because raw cannabis contains a\nmultitude of compounds that are not psychoactive (THCA, for example), it\nmust be heated in order to change the chemical structure of the herb and\nactivate the psychoactive compounds within it.\n\nDecarboxylation is a simple process that can easily be done at home.\nMost consumers choose to decarboxylate their cannabis by laying it out\non a lined cookie sheet and baking it at low temperatures for a long\nperiod of time. At the end of the baking period, the cannabis becomes\ncrumbly and dry. At this point, it is ground in a food processor and can\nbe included in a variety of different extractions.\n\nWhile decarboxylation may seem like an added step in the journey toward\nhomemade cannabis cuisine, it's something consumers who want to cook\nwith cannabis must do in order to ensure a quality product.\n\n**Extracting Cannabis**\n\nCannabis must always be processed with heat before cooking, and there\nare several methods of doing so. The two most popular methods of\nextracting cannabis at home are by making cannabutter (cannabis-infused\nbutter) and cannabis-infused oil.\n\nWhile the THC in cannabis doesn't bind to water, it binds to fats very\nwell. This means processing the cannabis in the form of heated butter or\noil activates the psychoactive compounds within the plant, preserves the\n[terpenes](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/562948683138320006d70000/terpenes-that-augment-the-healing-power-of-cannabis)\n(the heat-sensitive oils and compounds within marijuana that give the\nplant its taste and smell), and produces a simple, tasty, and\neasy-to-use method of incorporating cannabis into a variety of meals and\ndishes. Most consumers enjoy experimenting with both cannabis-infused\noil and cannabutter, each offering ease of use and versatility.\n\n**Cannabutter**\n\nCannabutter is a favorite of cannabis consumers everywhere. Easy to use\non everything from toast to homemade cookies, cannabutter is a versatile\nmethod of extracting cannabis at home. Check out our [cannabutter\nrecipe](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/56b27915fe98a1000c000243/diy-recipe-cannabutter-or-cannabis-butter).\n\n**Cannabis-infused oil**\n\nSimple, tasty, versatile, and easy to use, cannabis-infused oil can\neasily be used as a replacement for normal cooking oil in recipes like\nbrownies and other baked goods. It can also be used in things like salad\ndressings and garnishes. See our [recipe for marijuana-infused\noil](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5a34777c100a820006562f0a/diy-recipe-marijuana-infused-cooking-oil).\n\n**Measuring Cannabis for Cooking**\n\nOne of the biggest struggles home cannabis cooks face is accurately\nmeasuring the amount of marijuana to include in a recipe. Homemade\nedibles that contain too much cannabis produce an uncomfortable high,\nwhile homemade edibles that don't contain enough cannabis are simply\ndisappointing. Fortunately, it's easy to calculate cannabis levels\ncorrectly by using a simple guide.\n\nAs a general rule, 1 teaspoon of cannabis butter or cannabis-infused oil\ncontains 10 milligrams of cannabis, which is a good introductory serving\n(people who have never used cannabis before will be more comfortable\naround 5 milligrams per serving). If the consumer would like to alter\nthe serving size as they become more experienced with homemade edibles,\nthey should be sure to start off slowly and move up gradually.\n\n**What to Expect From Cannabis Edibles**\n\nConsumers who have never eaten marijuana before are often shocked by how\ndifferent the effects can be from smoking.
