Herpes in both forms cycles between dormant and active periods. The active phases of the condition are commonly brought by periods of stress, illness, lack of sleep, or some other event that exacerbates the condition which leads to a breakout of sores. Herpes sores can be painful and can also cause other pain associated with urination or itching. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nThere is no cure for herpes and it can be transmitted through contact with someone else’s sores who has the condition. Most commonly, it is transmitted during active outbreaks. It is often thought that herpes can only be transmitted sexually, but, in its oral form, it can be also transmitted through kissing or even from sharing drinks. \n\n### How Can Cannabis Help?\n\nCannabis can help herpes sufferers in a variety of ways. Medical marijuana can help decrease anxiety surrounding everyday life or big events, which often can trigger outbreaks. Different cannabinoids have different effects on anxiety, with CBD appearing to be the most effective at reducing anxiety. A [2011 study](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21307846) published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology showed that CBD greatly decreased the symptoms experienced by people with social anxiety disorder. CBD also has anti-inflammatory effects that could help to decrease the severity and pain caused by a herpes outbreak.\n\n[![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58dad358b0a11461e6b875d3/embedded_images/58daf7fa3bb6a6687a14cc80/truefarma.jpg)](http://truefarma.com/hello-md/)\n[TRUE FARMA DEAL: 25% off your first purchase for first time customers within California.](http://truefarma.com/hello-md/) \n\nPhysiological measures, like blood pressure and heart rate, as well as personal evaluations showed greatly decreased levels of anxiety in patients who were administered CBD during a public speaking test compared to those who had taken a placebo. The anxiety reducing effects could help decrease the frequency or severity outbreaks, especially leading up to important events that often cause increased stresses. \n\nRELATED: [MARIJUANA AND SHINGLES](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5899531976773d000ad77ae2/marijuana-and-shingles)\n\nTHC can help reduce pain caused by an outbreak. Pain experienced by people with herpes is often neuropathic in nature, a kind of pain that cannabis is particularly effective at targeting. A [study by the University of California at Davis]](https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/results/NCT01037088?term=cannabis&rank=14&sect=X601) found that THC could greatly reduce neuropathic pain experienced by patients, even in the very small concentrations of 3.53% and 1.29% THC. 61% and 57% of people in the study groups who received cannabis for treatment experienced a reduction in their pain, leading the study to conclude that THC has great analgesic effects on neuropathic pain. \n\n### Research Finding Cannabis is Effective\n\nSome [preliminary studies](http://www.medicalmarijuanainc.com/herpes-virus-medical-marijuana-research-overview/) have also found that THC could even change how the body responds to the herpes virus. THC appears to be able to modulate the body’s immune response to help counter the spread of herpes. THC may help inhibit the synthesis of glycoproteins, which helps with the maturation and spread of the virus. \n\nThis means that cannabis could actually help decrease the viruses viability and reduce its spread by up to 80%. Though more research is needed to confirm these findings, the current research does indicate that THC could interfere with viral replication. CBD could also potentially add to cannabis’ potential to block the spread of the virus because of its own anti-microbial properties. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Part 2","slug":"cannabis-for-increased-passion-and-play-part-2","content":"This is the continuation of ['Cannabis for Increased Passion & Play' Part 1](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5887f2c9d88c9d000847c1d0/cannabis-for-increased-passion-and-play-part-1).\n\n### Cannabis & Foreplay\n\nFirst things first, let’s do away with the term “foreplay” because sexual intimacy can be a delicious, lingered-over journey from start to finish. Intercourse or genital-sex do not have to be the main act, as there is so much to explore and enjoy as you traverse the whole arousal journey. \n\nSecond, women in particular need extra time to relax in order to activate their fullest sexual response. There are areas of the female brain that are associated with feelings of worry, stress, anxiety, and guilt, and these take quite a bit of time to come “offline.” \n\nAt the same time, the vast network of erectile tissue of the clitoris, rich in sensory nerves and seemingly-infinite capacity for pleasure, (and about the size of a penis, though mostly all internal), also takes time to fully engorge. \n\nAs we know, cannabis will activate a woman's relaxation response, so toking in the bathtub before her partner comes home is one way for a woman to prime her body for more pleasure. However, toking together can be a form of foreplay, a part of the sexual experience, which slows things down and allows the erotic energy to build. Passing a joint or sampling the flavors of the vape pen is a way to connect with your lover as you cultivate the senses. \n\nThere are also topicals, cannabis-infused creams and oils (like Arnicann) that are designed to be used on the skin to sooth aches, but can be used for massage and even hand-jobs, as long as condoms aren't used where there's been oils. \n\nMassage is a wonderful form of “foreplay” and it can feel as good to give as to receive. Just lose yourself in giving, without wondering if you’re doing it right, and check in here and there to receive feedback from your lover so you can adjust accordingly. Find topicals that are made from food-grade ingredients so you can lick and kiss the body parts you’ve been rubbing! \n\nTip: Breathe deeply as you immerse yourself in touching, making out, and other forms of sexy play; deep breaths intensify pleasureable sensations and emotions. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58922f0b189869000c9af616/embedded_images/58922f0e189869000c9af617/Screen_Shot_2017-02-01_at_10.52.57_AM.png)\n[Dee Dusault](https://www.deedussault.com/) is well known for her sexuality teaching which includes the use of cannabis.\n \n### Cannabis Lengthens Sexual Playtime\n\nYou can also use cannabis during the “valley” parts of sex, when the energy is less intense and you can rest and connect again, puff, and giggle, before getting down and dirty once more. \n\nCannabis, with its ability to stretch time, can help us to become lost in the intimacy, connection, and pleasure we can share with a partner (or enjoy with ourselves). Being high lends itself to slowing down and not chasing the “goal” of orgasm. Instead the goal becomes pleasure.\nWith cannabis, make-outs, cuddles, and love-making sessions become longer in duration, less goal-oriented, and as such, more of the brain chemical oxytocin gets released. This is the hormone responsible for feelings of trust, well-being and fulfillment. \n\nThe formulae for ganja-enhanced passion then looks like this: Cannabis = relaxation, + active relaxation cultivation (like yoga or a bath before sex) + mindfulness practice + good sexy play = longer good sexy play = more happy juice in the brain = more sexy play = more happy juice, in an endless loop of expanding pleasure.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nIt’s no wonder Tantra Yoga considers sexual experience one of the foundational ways to attain enlightenment. \n\nTip: During a “valley” moment in sex, ask your partner to close their eyes and inhale as you press the cool metal mouthpiece of the vape pen to their lips. Closing the eyes enhances the other senses, so touch and taste become stronger. \n\n### What Strain or Dose?\n\nMake a sensual adventure of choosing strains, based on what you smell. Forgo delivery this Valentine’s, and take your date to a dispensary where they have nice big jars of cannabis, and take a big whiff of each one. The terpenes you like are probably medicinally helpful to you; your body is expressing it’s wisdom through these cravings and delights. \n\nBeginners might consider building a relationship to different cannabis strains before using it with sex. If you experiment and find you get agitated or anxious (or overly lethargic), that's not the strain for love making! Keep sampling, perhaps with masturbation, to see the sexy effect of each strain. There is no one best strain for sex, in my opinion, just many that can relax, arouse, and connect you. \n\nRELATED:[CANNABIS FOR INCREASED PASSION & PLAY! PART 1](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5887f2c9d88c9d000847c1d0/cannabis-for-increased-passion-and-play-part-1)\n\nRegarding dose, people new to cannabis, or who have been sensitive in the past, should start with a very low dose. I'm a fan of the principle of “minimum effective dose,” where we take the least amount of medicine needed to obtain the desired effect. It would be a waste of energy to use more muscular force than needed to chop firewood, for example, and there'd be physical consequences for overdoing it: sore muscles the next day. By the same token, there’s no need to get blotto stoned when using cannabis for sex. You can always add more! Low potency vaping (like Alchemy vape pens) helps to prevent over-doing it.\n\nTip: Each individual plant will affect your body and mind in its unique way, and this will change from time to time and plant to plant. One strain of Blue Dream might have slightly different genetics the next grow season. You might have different brain chemistry the next time you smoke it. By consuming less and going slow, you’ll be sure to ride the wave of the optimal cannabis high. \n\n### Lubrication with Cannabis\n\nNow you know why cannabis enhances passion and play, and you have some tips to make the most of it: Slowing down, being mindful, dropping goals, and immersing yourself in pleasure. \n\nA last word of advice: Make sure you have lots of water handy before things steam up. Cannabis can cause “dry mouth”, so by the same token, dryness in the vagina can also be a result. Even if you are going slow and savoring the “foreplay,” you might need to take hydration breaks or use additional lube to make sure there isn’t too much friction if you or your partner has a vagina. \n\n***********************************************************************\nIf you would like more inspiration, check out my Bay Area Valentines Tantra classes, sponsored by Alchemy Vape Pens by Dark Heart, [Kiva Chocolates](https://hellomd.com/brands/5787f6e054d3a610003b8948) and [Arnicann topicals!](http://www.goarnicann.com/ ) \n\nFriday night: [“Sexual Awakening Yoga”](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sexy-flex-for-women-tickets-31203488474?utm_source=eb_email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=new_event_email&utm_term=viewmyevent_button) class for women, Saturday afternoon: [“Partner Yoga for Love”](https://www.meetup.com/Ganja-Yoga/events/236974981/) and [“Partner Tantra Yoga and Massage.”](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tantra-yoga-and-massage-sold-out-tickets-31204352057?utm_campaign=new_event_email&utm_medium=email&utm_source=eb_email&utm_term=viewmyevent_button) \n\nDee Dussault helps people find their bliss through relaxation, mindfulness, and sensuality. However, if you’re a total newbie to the world of cannabis, or feel apprehensive about trying it again after a bad trip long ago, let me be the first to say, it’s a brave new world now, and cannabis is not the same thing it was even five years ago. \n\n### Something for Everyone\n\nWith new scientific understandings of how it affects our body and cutting edge technology to make the most of extraction and bioavailability, cannabis is blooming. With so much diversity in strain type (literally thousands to choose from), ways to consume (smoke, vape, eat, or rub it), and types of potential effect, in many ways it’s like talking about many different plants. The good news is, when it comes to cannabis, now there’s something for nearly everyone.\n\nIf you’ve heard good things about using cannabis for sex and want to try it, consider me your green Cupid, shooting you with my arrow of knowledge this Valentine's’ day. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\nYou’re in good hands: I’m a sexuality coach and relaxation expert, and I’ll give you the tools you need to select the best cannabis product to get the job done, whether with a lover or on your own, while sprinkling in some intimacy and sensuality techniques from the world of Tantra Yoga, which will expand both the psychoactive experience of the cannabis and the passion you’re experiencing! \n\n### Cannabis Relaxation\n\nCannabis is good for love because it's good for yoga, listening to music, walks in nature, and anything else you like. Cannabis increases relaxation, which enables us to connect to and feel into our bodies more deeply, which makes sex better as well. It's also important to know that when cannabis doesn’t relax you, it usually means the strain was too high in THC, or too much cannabis was consumed.\n\nIn yoga, we learn that we enjoy and appreciate life more when we’re feeling relaxed. Relaxation of both body and mind is the key to really good living, and to really good sex. Think about the best sexual experiences you've had; I bet it was when you were free of concern, anxiety, and distraction. Think about how extra-good sex feels after a run, or when on vacation. When we’re relaxed, our blood vessels dilate, allowing for greater nerve sensitivity throughout the body. \n\n### Cannabis as Sexual Lubricant\n\nCannabis, at the right strain and dose, encourages mental and physical relaxation. It has been shown to sooth depression and anxiety, while at the same time, decreasing inflammation and pain. \n\nRELATED: [MARIJUANA INCREASES YOUR SEXUAL EXPERIENCE](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/587417bc2975c00008b040b1/marijuana-increases-your-sexual-experience)\n\nI tell my sex coaching clients to think of cannabis as an energetic lubricant, washing away the corrosive armor of tension that we carry, usually unconsciously. To get high and chill out. Many of us know that stress and anxiety are implicated in low sex drive for both genders, and inability to attain orgasm in women and male premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction in guys. Using cannabis to relax is a stand for self-care and a commitment to better sex.\n\nTip: If you’re new to cannabis, explore it in places that feel comfortable and pleasing, either alone or with people you trust and feel good around. There’s no rush to develop a relationship at a fast pace. Just take your time and enjoy the journey. Choose methods of consumption that feel the most natural and exciting to you: vaping, smoking, eating, using tinctures, or rubbing on topicals. My favorite for sex is a low-dose edible that can slowly take effect about a half an hour after I eat it. Chocolates like Kiva give a wonderfully pleasurable body-buzz!\n\n### Relaxation as Foreplay\n\nUsing cannabis to relax is one thing. Using cannabis, alongside various relaxation practices, is quite another. Mindfulness is one such practice. Here you attempt to keep your attention in the present moment instead of being lost in thought. \n\n![](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/5887f2c9d88c9d000847c1d0/embedded_images/5892302b81d687000c7d62a3/Screen_Shot_2017-02-01_at_10.52.57_AM.png)\n[Dee Dusault](https://www.deedussault.com/) is well known for her sexuality teaching which includes the use of cannabis.\n \nMindfulness is a spiritual practice with pragmatic applications. It reduces stress and brings more appreciation, but it also can make time feel slower. When you're right here, right now, with the universe of sensation and emotion (and even noticing thoughts without getting lost in them), you get to savor the passing of time instead of feeling like you're racing against it or a slave to it. \n\nBeing mindful as you nibble that delicious artisanal chocolate edible not only makes you more grateful for the moment, it also makes the moment feel more divine. \n\nCombining mindfulness, cannabis, and sexual intimacy creates a sort of \"entourage effect\" where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Adding other forms of conscious relaxation before getting busy, like taking a hot bath, busting out some yoga, or lighting candles, will make both the high and the loving even more meaningful, sweet, and yummy! \n\nTip: What can you be mindful of, right now as you read? Lift your head for a moment and notice color, shape, sound. Notice your mood, thoughts, feelings. Notice your body, heartbeat, breath. When you're preparing to meet with your lover, take time to relax with a few minutes of mindfulness practice, or other activities that relax you physically and emotionally. The more relaxed you are, the more you'll feel and enjoy the timeless eternity of each passionate moment!\n\n[READ PART 2 OF CANNABIS FOR PASSION & PLAY!](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/58922f0b189869000c9af616/cannabis-for-increased-passion-and-play-part-2)\n\nIf you would like more inspiration, check out my Bay Area Valentines Tantra classes, sponsored by Alchemy Vape Pens by Dark Heart, Kiva Chocolates and [Arnicann topicals!](http://www.goarnicann.com/ ) \n\nFriday night: [“Sexual Awakening Yoga”](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sexy-flex-for-women-tickets-31203488474?utm_source=eb_email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=new_event_email&utm_term=viewmyevent_button) class for women, Saturday afternoon: [“Partner Yoga for Love”](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/partner-yoga-for-love-tickets-31489708566) and [“Partner Tantra Yoga and Massage.”](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tantra-yoga-and-massage-tickets-31489747683) \n____________________________________________________________________\n\nDee Dussault helps people find their bliss through relaxation, mindfulness, and sensuality. Nothing is more romantic than curling up with your significant other as the rain or snow falls outside your window. There is something extremely sensual about winter and the contrast of cold outside while you are staying cozy and warm inside. I find that cannabis is a great way to enhance my sexual experience and help me keep warm in the winter. Perhaps I am one of the lucky ones, but cannabis provides me with a comfort and ease in my sexual experience, leaving me completely satisfied. \n\nOne reason why this may be so is that cannabis consumption is known to stimulate the production of oxytocin in the body. The production of oxytocin, also known as the bonding hormone, is closely related to the endocannabinoid system. Oxytocin is involved in a variety of human interactions, including sexual intercourse. Oxytocin is often released during orgasm, creating a bond between sexual partners that brings them closer together. The increased oxytocin production experienced while using cannabis during sex leaves me feeling deeply connected to my partner on a physical and spiritual level. Cannabis helps us achieve a level of closeness and unity that is truly unique. \n\n### Relaxing the Body & Mind\n\nCannabis provides the ultimate sense of relaxation and ease, leaving me free from any personal anxieties. Like many other women in the world, I have my own personal anxieties. Between worrying about how I look when I take my clothes off to personal performance, sometimes my internal worrying can make sex less enjoyable. Cannabis helps free me of that stress, allowing me to fully immerse myself in the enjoyment of the sexual experience. \n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\nCannabis can also help alleviate physical discomfort associated with sex. Whether physical discomfort is caused by mental anxieties or a medical condition, cannabis can help make sex more enjoyable. Marijuana not only increases physical stimulation, but it can also relax your muscles, making sex more pleasurable. Whether your discomfort is caused by chronic pain in some part of your body or due to hormone-related conditions like menopause, cannabis can help take the stress out of your sex life. Whether you are looking for a cannabis product to relax or stimulate you, I have complied a list of cannabis strains and products that are perfect for enhancing your sexual experience. \n\n### Cannabis for Sexual Enhancement\n\nHere are a list of my top cannabis strains and products which both enhance my sexual experience and fully relax me.\n\n### Blueberry Diesel\n\nBlueberry Diesel is a hybrid of Blueberry and Sour Diesel that is known for its strong blueberry flavor and smell. Foria Explore is a cannabis suppository designed to enhance anal intercourse that was made with the LGBT community in mind. The suppository is made with only four ingredients, two of which are cannabis products and the other two being jojoba extract and sunflower lectin. Each suppository contains 60 mg THC and 10 mg CBD. When administered, the product releases the active compounds throughout the pelvis and anal region. \r\n\r\n### Better Anal Sex\r\n\r\nThe product relaxes muscles and eases pain, allowing for easier and more enjoyable anal intercourse. Foria reported benefits from users including: “heightened pleasure”, “deeper penetration”, “pelvic relaxation”, and “diminished discomfort”. The suppository application of the product allows for the calming and relaxing effects of the cannabis without the high. \r\n\r\nThe product was first released on June 9th at SPARC, a non-profit medical cannabis collective in San Fransisco, which will be the exclusive dispensary of the product in until June 26th. SPARC will also host Foria’s Explore Pride celebration on the 23rd of June, in the midst of San Fransisco’s Pride celebrations. Foria is looking to make a name for itself in the LGBT community, where there is a lot of interest in products that ease anal intercourse related pain. \r\n\r\n### A Better Alternative to Poppers\r\n\r\n“Poppers”, a compound of alkyl nitrates, are commonly taken to relax anal muscles to make anal penetration easier. “Poppers” can be found in many forms, but they are most commonly inhaled. Though “poppers” can help ease the process of anal intercourse, they also come with a long list of side effects including dizziness, detachment, disinhibition, fainting, and death in high doses. The common use of a product like “poppers” shows the importance of sexual health awareness. Foria is filling an important niche and providing a natural alternative for a whole community. \r\n\r\n### Foria Relief\r\n\r\nThis is not the first time Foria has filled an underserved niche. Foria Relief, which contains the same levels of THC and CBD as Foria Explore, was designed to ease women’s period pain. Similarly to Explore, Relief promotes muscle relaxation and pain relief without any physco-active properties. Relief, however, is designed to be vaginally inserted. Foria Relief is made with only three ingredients: organic cocoa butter, CO2 distilled THC oil, and CBD isolate. Lisa Rough of Leafly described an extreme level of relief and relaxation from Foria Relief, though she did also simultaneously consume an edible marijuana product. Rough highly recommends Foria Relief for anyone who is suffering from debilitating cramps or pain related to their period. \r\n\r\nForia products are available in both California and Colorado and it stands out as a company that is looking to go where other marijuana companies have not gone before. Foria’s first product was a cannabis oil, mixed with coconut oil, aimed at increasing sexual pleasure for women. They have continued their production into other products like Explore and Relief, which are both related to sexual health. Foria is focused on simple and high quality ingredients and is emphasizing the importance of the health and wellbeing of their clientele in all aspects of their life. \r\n\r\n###[Ask Foria a Question](https://www.hellomd.com/biz/foria) \r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. It was for stoners, it sucked you into the couch like fly paper for humans, and it was not good for society. It certainly did not help that my then-boyfriend played Formula 1 video games for most of the day while stoned. Reading about the so-called ‘medicinal’ benefits, I might have even rolled my eyes.\r\n\r\nToday, I am an impassioned pro-cannabis advocate. It has changed my life for the better using it as a medicine to better manage debilitating migraines as well as to increase my overall sense of health and wellness. The reasons that lead someone to consider using cannabis are varied and may even be complex. Below are five reasons I believe you should consider giving cannabis a first or second chance.\r\n\r\n**1. Cannabis alleviates pain quickly.**\r\n\r\nAs humans, we experience a lot of physical pain. I often look at my dog Juno and wonder why we feel so much more physical pain than say, my dog. It is a fact, we experience it and it tends to get worse as we get older. [Nearly 100 million Americans](http://www.nap.edu/read/13172/chapter/2# 3) suffer from chronic pain.\r\n\r\nI like many others suffer from pain including migraines, fibromyalgia, bursitis in my hips and tendonitis that can flare up in my wrist/arm. My diet is healthy and I exercise regularly, but I am still troubled with physical pain. In my experience, marijuana helps calm inflammation in my body and nips my migraines in the bud before they blossom. In addition, it helps quell the rising tide of PMS and feeling of unrest that comes with my fluctuating hormones. \r\n\r\nCannabis, and particularly, Cannibidiol (CBD), is a known anti-inflammatory and an analgesic. [A new study](http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=2338266) shows that cannabis is effective in pain management for chronic pain such as fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain as well as pain associated with multiple sclerosis. The [Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America recently stated](http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/view.source.php?sourceID=000412): \r\n\r\n>\"Experimental evidence suggests that endocannabanoids, molecules found in the body that closely resemble compounds found in the cannabis (marijuana) plant, may play a role in limiting intestinal inflammation.”\r\n\r\nMainstream medicine also acknowledges that marijuana, and in particular THC, seems to help cancer patients manage pain. I am cherry picking only some medical conditions cannabis helps. \r\n\r\n**2. Cannabis does not have the same negative side effects as prescription drugs or alcohol.**\r\n\r\nIf you don’t like to get ‘high’, the psychoactive feeling you receive after ingesting THC, then that is about the only negative side effect that cannabis will give you. It can also make some people feel a little groggy after use, but that’s about it in terms of side effects. Unlike pharmaceutical drugs, and even alcohol, the negative impact of ingesting moderate amounts of cannabis is extremely low. Cannabis can act a relaxant, anti depressant and treat the symptoms of innumerable medical conditions. Conversely, the pros of using cannabis far outweigh the cons. You would be hard pressed to find a single death from someone ‘overdosing’ on marijuana, it just does not happen.\r\n\r\nOn the flip side to cannabis, there is a death associated with prescription drugs every 19 minutes in the United States. More people in the US die from prescription drugs than from illegal drugs. I’ve heard some people say it is like [‘Pharmageddon’](http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/10/26/prescription-drugs-number-one-cause-preventable-death-in-us.aspx). \r\n\r\nThe list of negative side effects from a pharmaceutical drug can read like an Egyptian papyrus scroll and some can even be laughable. ‘May cause transient third nipple in laboratory rats.’, read one label I glanced at recently. Prescription drugs can also be highly addictive. Many people take not one but multiple pharmaceuticals in conjunction with one another, leading to a potentially dangerous situation, especially in the elderly population.\r\n\r\nAlcohol, although widely accepted culturally, has innumerable [negative side effects](http://www.niaaa.nih.gov/alcohol-health/alcohols-effects-body). It damages the heart, liver, pancreas, weakens the immune system and the link between alcohol and cancer is well established. Our bodies also become less efficient at processing alcohol as we get older and we are more likely to feel drunk more quickly. Our bodies break alcohol down into acetaldehyde, which is a [‘highly toxic substance and known carcinogen’](http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/AA72/AA72.htm). Many proponents are quick to point out that it prevents heart disease or cultivates a ‘healthy heart’, but the reality is our body processes it as a toxin. Additionally, the [CDC released that 88,000 people in the US die every year from alcohol use]( http://www.cdc.gov/alcohol/fact-sheets/alcohol-use.htm).\r\n\r\nAs with anything, moderation is key. Someone who abuses cannabis may end up feeling ‘burnt out’ or be a 'burn out'. But overall, if used in moderation with an understanding of how your system works with cannabis, you may reap many rewards.\r\n\r\n\r\n**3. You don’t need to get ‘high’ to experience the positive benefits from cannabis.**\r\n\r\nYou can get high if you want to, but you don’t have to. This is where cannabis starts to get interesting to me. I always assumed you needed to get stoned in order to use cannabis. I also assumed you needed to smoke it. Both of these assumptions are incorrect. You don’t need to get stoned and there are [many ways you can now ingest cannabis](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/methods-of-administering-medical-marijuana).\r\n\r\nPersonally, I am not able to ingest larger quantities of THC. The psychoactive component tends to make me feel very uncomfortable (like a head with no body), which is also why I was anti-cannabis for so long. That all changed when I discovered CBD (cannabidiol). CBD is an anti-inflammatory and when combined with THC, can remediate the effects of THC. In short, CBD is the antidote to THC’s psychoactivity. When used in the right quantities, or ratio, together, I am able to experience the medicinal benefits as well as an overall sense of calm and relaxation. Everyone is different in this respect, but you absolutely do not need to get high.\r\n\r\n**4. Cannabis relaxes you and can potentially ease anxiety.**\r\n\r\nCannabis can induce a feeling of well-being and relaxation. To me, I find that using a cannabis tincture at night, helps take the edge off similar to the way a glass of wine might. The tinctures I choose tend to be high CBD and low THC and are not psychoactive. It works like a charm and I am mentally present and alert. Other people may find that a vape pen with higher concentrations of THC help to relax them, it depends on the person as we all have slightly different reactions to cannabis.\r\n\r\nAnxiety affects nearly 40 million Americans according to the [Anxiety & Depression Association of America](http://www.adaa.org/about-adaa/press-room/facts-statistics). Most of the top selling pharmaceutical drugs in the US treat anxiety & depression. It’s a big problem, and although cannabis does not address the root of this nationwide epidemic, it can certainly help alleviate anxiety in some people. A new study has even the [National Institute of Health suggesting it may relieve anxiety]( http://motherboard.vice.com/read/the-nih-says-yes-weed-eases-anxiety). That said, studies can diverge on this subject and I believe the way cannabis affects people is highly individual and also directly correlates to the amount of THC to CBD that is ingested. You basically need to try it to see if it works for you.\r\n\r\n**5. Cannabis improves your sex life.**\r\n\r\nOK, so maybe this should be in the number one spot. It’s true, cannabis can improve your sexual experience and may even make you want to have more of it. Meow. This is good news for the institution of marriage, which should give those pro family politicians in Washington a good reason to support cannabis legalization.\r\n\r\nCannabis can enhance the body’s ability to experience orgasms and there is scientific evidence to support this. [Dr. Mitch Earlywine, a psychology professor at SUNY Albany states](http://elitedaily.com/dating/your-sex-life-on-weed/1026506/):\r\n\r\n>“That CB1 receptor seems to be involved in improved tactile sensations and general euphoria,” he says, referring to cannabinoid receptors in our nervous system activated by THC. Naturally, no pun intended, THC is the active drug found in cannabis.”\r\n\r\nMany people claim cannabis is an aphrodisiac and some even claim it to be a [‘natural Viagra’](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/23/medical-marijuana-stiff-competition-for-viagra_n_839678.html). This is not news as marijuana has been cited as an aphrodisiac for centuries, if not thousands of years. Most of this is anecdotal evidence however as the medical studies on sex and cannabis are rare. As with anxiety, experiences can differ. Some people claim that it inhibits their sexual response. It is important to note your overall experience is also highly dependent on what cannabis you ingest.\r\n\r\nLucky for us ladies, there are many new cannabis products on the market that address an enhanced sexual experience. It may come as a surprise that many are topical oils designed to be used as a sexual lubricant. Two brands you may want to try out are [Herba Buena’s Quiver](http://herbabuena.com/product/quiver-sensual-cannabis-lubricant/) and [Foria's personal lubricants](http://foriapleasure.com/pages/about-us).\r\n\r\nWell, that's it in a nutshell as to why I think you should give cannabis a try. Studies pointing to marijuana as an effective treatment option has motivated lawmakers to pursue the legalization of cannabis for medical purposes in individual states all over the country. One medical issue impacted by cannabis use is sexual health. Studies indicate that marijuana has different effects on men as it does on women when it comes to both sex drive and sex life satisfaction.\r\n\r\nCannabis and Men's Sexual Health\r\n\r\nThere are countless studies aimed at measuring the impact of marijuana use on men's sexual health, particularly when it comes to testosterone production. A study conducted as part of a joint collaboration between the Reproductive Biology Research Foundation and the Missouri Clinical and Biochemical Laboratory found that cannabis does indeed have an impact on testosterone production.\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \r\n\r\nHowever, it is important to note that this study related to intensive marijuana use that was primarily recreational in nature. When marijuana is used for medical purposes, the effects on those who are utilizing cannabis to ease the symptoms of a medical condition may not experience the ill effects of marijuana when it comes to sexual health. The difference is in part due to the use of modified strains for medical use as compared with recreational marijuana. High levels of THC cause the body to produce lower levels of testosterone. Additionally, men should be aware that any negative impact on testosterone production is temporary in nature. Discontinuing use of marijuana in this specific situation allows the body to regulate hormone levels once again.\r\n\r\n[CANNABIS 101 - THC VS CBD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-thc-vs-cbd)\r\n\r\nPerhaps the most confusing characteristic of studies related to men's sexual health and cannabis use is the differing results from scientific studies seeking to measure the same variable: testosterone levels. The results of a study conducted through the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Research Center at Harvard Medical School-McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, concluded that marijuana use does not have a significant impact on testosterone, although the key word here is \"significant.\" These studies did indicate an impact on testosterone levels, but researchers in this instance felt that the impact was not a strong one. In many cases, determining whether medical marijuana can be beneficial to sexual health is a matter of discussing personal details with a licensed medical provider.\r\n\r\nCannabis and Women's Sexual Health\r\n\r\nOn the other hand, there are claims that topical oils containing medical marijuana are able to enhance the sexual experience for women. The results of a study conducted through the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, support the theory that cannabis is able to improve sexual health for women by increasing arousal and strengthening the physiological responses to sexual stimulation.\r\n\r\nAfter a topical oil containing cannabis was applied to test subjects, one group of subjects was shown erotic films. The other group was not given an outside stimulus. Physiological responses related to blood flow associated with sexual arousal were measured, and test subjects were found to have an increased sexual response following the application of the cannabis oil. In addition, subjective responses to questions concerning perceived sensation were answered positively after application of the oil. The ultimate conclusion of the study was that a topical oil containing medical marijuana is an effective treatment for low sex drive in women.\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_/?hl=en) \r\n\r\nMedical marijuana containing a lower-than-average THC concentration has also been used to improve sexual health in women. The low-THC cannabis increases sensitivity and delays orgasm to give couples more time to share the intimate experience. Positive effects on women's sexual health seem to be most associated with cannabis with a THC level around 14 percent, while standard THC concentrations typically fall between 15 and 20 percent.\r\n\r\nThe need to stay at a THC concentration of 14 percent or lower for women's sexual health benefits is believed to be linked to the effects that higher concentrations have on estrogen production. Standard THC levels in medical marijuana can decrease sex drive by throwing estrogen levels out of balance.\r\n\r\n[MENSTRUAL CRAMPS BE DAMNED - CANNABIS SUPPOSITORY](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/menstrual-cramps-be-damned-with-new-cannabis-vaginal-suppository)\r\n\r\nSome women report that medical marijuana is also able to help with any psychological blocks that may be preventing them from enjoying a healthy sex life. However, it is important to note that medical marijuana used to ease anxiety related to sexual activity should be used at the advice of a licensed medical provider.\r\n\r\nConclusion\r\n\r\nIn response to the question if medical marijuana should be prescribed to improve sexual health, the answer is that it depends on the specific dysfunction and also the gender to which it's being prescribed. Some men may find that their hormone levels are negatively affected through cannabis use for medicinal purposes, while some women can enhance the strength of orgasms through the use of medical marijuana infused into a topical oil. The best way to determine whether medical marijuana can help with sexual health is to discuss the unique facts of a particular situation with a HelloMD-participating doctor.\r\n\r\nSources:\r\n\r\nhttp://www.cnbc.com/2014/08/04/women-find-sexual-helpwith-cannabis.html\r\n\r\nhttp://www.menshealth.co.uk/healthy/addictions/effects-of-smoking-weed\r\n\r\nhttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21269404\r\n\r\nhttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/22462722/\r\n\r\nhttp://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJM197404182901602\r\n\r\nhttp://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM197411142912003\r\n\r\nhttp://nymag.com/thecut/2015/06/can-this-marijuana-give-women-better-sex.html\r\n\r\nhttps://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/all-about-sex/201003/how-does-marijuana-affect-your-sex-life\r\n\r\n[Photo Credit.](https://www.flickr.com/photos/53199633@N02/8521298151/in/photolist-dYZT4D-8jyFUm-6n5sMi-8F8Dux-6HuF49-6VGHJe-6R5xBW-946wCN-Kz5r5-Kz57Y-Kzayg-Kz5bw-KzaFk-46NFk-7kQbLj-6GeCZg-6Ss5Tq-899ubx-6BYf8P-46NFp-46NFm-urdCr-6PHdPz-6C3mwh-6BYfdR-6BYf2t-6C3ncJ-5SCcM-5SCeT-5SCc5-5SCbG-5SCaL-5SCe8-5SCaw-5SCez-5SCcg-5SCc1-5SCbq-5SCcy-5SCd9-5SCdn-5SCdT-5SCbc-5SCdA-5SCeM-5SCdr-5SCcD-5SCbU-5SCev-5SCcH)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/jpeg;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.3333333333333333,"src":"/static/5dd0ada8c305121aef5fd90ac67a0a5f/14b42/317bab6b824574fcef80999d02002454.jpg","srcSet":"/static/5dd0ada8c305121aef5fd90ac67a0a5f/f836f/317bab6b824574fcef80999d02002454.jpg 200w,\n/static/5dd0ada8c305121aef5fd90ac67a0a5f/2244e/317bab6b824574fcef80999d02002454.jpg 400w,\n/static/5dd0ada8c305121aef5fd90ac67a0a5f/14b42/317bab6b824574fcef80999d02002454.jpg 800w,\n/static/5dd0ada8c305121aef5fd90ac67a0a5f/47498/317bab6b824574fcef80999d02002454.jpg 1200w,\n/static/5dd0ada8c305121aef5fd90ac67a0a5f/7d1a7/317bab6b824574fcef80999d02002454.jpg 1218w","srcWebp":"/static/5dd0ada8c305121aef5fd90ac67a0a5f/58556/317bab6b824574fcef80999d02002454.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/5dd0ada8c305121aef5fd90ac67a0a5f/61e93/317bab6b824574fcef80999d02002454.webp 200w,\n/static/5dd0ada8c305121aef5fd90ac67a0a5f/1f5c5/317bab6b824574fcef80999d02002454.webp 400w,\n/static/5dd0ada8c305121aef5fd90ac67a0a5f/58556/317bab6b824574fcef80999d02002454.webp 800w,\n/static/5dd0ada8c305121aef5fd90ac67a0a5f/99238/317bab6b824574fcef80999d02002454.webp 1200w,\n/static/5dd0ada8c305121aef5fd90ac67a0a5f/cedc7/317bab6b824574fcef80999d02002454.webp 1218w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}}]}},"pageContext":{"limit":12,"skip":12,"numPages":2,"currentPage":2,"id":5737,"name":"Sexual Health","slug":"sexual-health","country":"US"}},"staticQueryHashes":["3949754563","4179947113","4202924991"]}
