Walking into a typical dispensary, it’s quite common to be advised to purchase a 200 mg bar of chocolate or offered a gummy bear that may be anywhere from 20–50 mg of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).\n\nLuckily, this year we’ve seen the emergence of several new brands and products that have the microdosing cannabis consumer in mind. One of my absolute favorite new brands to hit the market in 2017 is called Satori. This California brand offers a [variety of low-dose chocolate-covered edibles](https://hellomd.com/articles/top-cannabis-brands-that-are-doing-it-right) in 1 mg, 3 mg and 10 mg doses.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \n\n### Microdosing Marijuana Explained\n\nThe [practice of microdosing marijuana](https://hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-101-cannabis-psilocybin-and-lsd) involves ingesting small amounts of cannabis to create a specific effect. For a medical marijuana consumer, this may be titrating a small amount throughout the day to treat a condition without feeling the effect of being high. For someone not seeking to treat a specific condition, microdosing may be used to produce a sense of well-being, reduce anxiety, focus attention or lift the spirits on a dreary day. Yep, in a nutshell, that’s microdosing.\n\n![Satori’s cannabis-infused chocolate-covered edibles](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58797273eb7401000b5ac214/embedded_images/58797302f00ad100085798ec/studio3.JPG)\nSatori pairs cannabis and chocolate in these tasty microdosed edibles.\n \nFor me, [microdosing cannabis started as a way to manage chronic pain](https://hellomd.com/articles/microdosing-cannabis-stopped-my-chronic-pain) effectively without feeling the psychoactive high. This worked very well for my chronic migraines and fibromyalgia. Over time however, I noticed that I enjoyed the relaxation and more subtle effects of microdosing. \n\nAfter a stressful day, microdosing a 3 mg cannabis-infused chocolate has a way of taking the edge off, similar to drinking a glass of wine. It should be noted that most people will not feel any noticeable psychoactive effects at around 2.5 mg and will begin to feel psychoactivity at around 5 –10 mg. As everyone is different, there are no hard and fast rules, but this applies to me. \n\nNow, I realize, if you’re an avid cannabis consumer with higher THC tolerances, such a low dosage may seem laughable. For those with lower tolerances though or for anyone who may have had a bad edible experience, this is a perfect way to onramp into the world of cannabis. \n\n### Satori Cannabis Chocolate Review\n\nFor my trial run with [Satori](https://twitter.com/satoriedibles), I chose to consume the 3 mg THC Wild Strawberries in Organic Milk Chocolate. Rather than sitting at home, I decided to test the 420 Games principle that [cannabis and athletics can go hand in hand](https://hellomd.com/articles/the-420-games-celebrates-athletes-healthy-living-and-cannabis.\n\nTo that end, I chose to attend a yoga class at my favorite yoga studio in San Francisco, Yoga Tree Castro, with my good girlfriend Valerie. (Valerie did not consume any cannabis.) I’ve been an avid yoga practitioner for the past 15 years, so I know both my capabilities and limits; I felt confident that 3 mg of THC wouldn’t put my downward dog (or me) in jeopardy. \n\nAs cannabis edibles must first be digested and then metabolized by your liver before entering your bloodstream, it can take up to one to two hours to feel the effects. With that in mind, I decided to consume my 3 mg Satori cannabis chocolate an hour before class time. Sitting in my car after I parked, I grabbed my Satori box. The packaging, which seems to be made out of recycled material, is aesthetically pleasing; it looks like high-quality-granola-meets-the-Whole-Foods-set.\n\n### Seeing Into One’s True Nature With Satori\n\nGoogling the word “Satori,” I came up with this: “The word is derived from the Japanese verb satoru. In the Zen Buddhist tradition, satori refers to the experience of kenshō, \"seeing into one's true nature.” Well, yes, I was feeling pretty good about everything at this point.\n\nOpening the box, I poured a handful of the cannabis chocolates into my palm. One of the first things I noticed was the chocolatey aroma wafting up intermixed with a faint scent of cannabis. I happen to like the smell of cannabis, so for me this was a pleasant experience. The second thing I noticed was that the size of the chocolates vary, and that they appeared to be panned, given the uneven texture. \n\nPanning refers to the practice of tumbling the chocolate over an object, such as a tasty dried strawberry. The only downside to panning with cannabis is that the dosage may vary. This is due to the size of the dried strawberry being panned and the amount of chocolate that actually coats the object. In other words, one strawberry might be 2 mg and another strawberry might be 4 mg. Unperturbed by this fact, I looked over the cannabis chocolates in my hand, chose a middle-sized chocolate-coated strawberry and popped it in my mouth.\n\n### First Impressions: This Is High-Quality Chocolate With a Hint of Cannabis\n\nOh, high-quality chocolate is what immediately entered my mind. Chocolate I want more of (which is somewhat problematic with edibles and requires restraint)! The other taste that came through was an earthy cannabis flavor, although it didn’t overpower the chocolate. The sweetness of the strawberry combined with the chocolate and cannabis flavor was pure bliss and unlike any other marijuana edible I’ve tried to date.\n\nUsually, it seems that manufacturers try to completely negate the cannabis flavor from an edible whereas Satori seems to celebrate it. Now, I would need to wait to feel the effects.\n\n![Cannabis chocolate to enhance my yoga experience](https://hellomd-production.s3.amazonaws.com/articles/58797273eb7401000b5ac214/embedded_images/58797276eb7401000b5ac215/studio2.JPG)\nGetting my zen on with Satori at Yoga Tree Castro in SF. \n\nAn hour later, I unrolled my yoga mat next to Valerie. Soon thereafter, I started to feel the effects of my cannabis-infused chocolate-covered strawberry as I began our first series of vinyasas. I felt a sense of relaxation and a deeper level of awareness within my body as we warmed up.\n\nOne striking difference was the emphasis I felt within my breathing and the sense of breath going to different parts of my body. As any yoga practitioner knows, this is a core tenet of yoga, but is often glossed over within the mind, which tends to wander and hold onto everything except the breath. I didn’t feel stoned; rather, I felt calm, focused and happy.\n\n### Feeling Happy From Satori’s Cannabis-Infused Chocolate-Covered Strawberry\n\nThe last word “happy” is a word I don’t often use when describing cannabis edibles. For the most part, when I take an edible, I notice a general sense of calm, but I also find them extremely useful for sleeping. With the Satori cannabis chocolate, I noticed a significant uptick in both my mood and energy level, which for me is quite unusual for any edible. If Satori could be analagous to something, it might be to the sativa marijuana strain. \n\nAs the class progressed, I went deeper into poses than I might normally go, while at the same time I didn’t feel as if I were stretching past any limitations. With the music going and feeling the flow both within myself and the class, I was really enjoying myself. There was only one point at which I thought better of a pose and stopped myself from doing a forearm stand, an upside-down inversion on the forearms. Considering I was about a foot away from my neighbors on either side, going upside down didn’t seem like it was in anyone’s best interest. \n\nAt the end of the 90-minute class, I was definitely feeling as if I were “seeing into my own true nature” as it were. I was extremely pleased with my experience with Satori’s 3 mg marijuana-spiked chocolate-covered strawberry. This is one cannabis product I plan to keep in heavy rotation and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone. Definitely a keeper.\n\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://hellomd.com/tag/cannabis-101/) post. Let’s face it, carrying around cannabis flower is not always convenient and it is never what I might call discreet. In addition, many people look to find cannabis products that might carry the benefits of smoking, but they would prefer not to smoke at all. It seems this is especially true of those that may be new to cannabis as well as the senior community. For these reasons, the cannabis marketplace has been exploding with a wide variety of new products that explore a plethora of delivery mediums. One product which recently came to my attention is a cannabis lozenge by Strovia.\n\nStrovia solely focuses on the creation of lozenges and offers 11 different products with four different ratios: THC rich, CBD rich, Balanced 1:1 and “Just CBD”. When the cannabinoids CBD and THC are combined, patients benefit from the synergistic healing action of THC and CBD. There is also a variety of potency anywhere from 2mg - 32mg, which provides enough variety for the varying needs of patients. Doug of Strovia commented on dosing saying, “In plant-based medicine, each person responds differently to identical doses. Some people achieve a substantial benefit from a micro dose. However, they may encounter that same benefit at the low, standard or high potency doses.” \n\nThe lozenges combine familiar flavors such as echinacea, ginger and lemongrass, apple, mango, honey and even pomegranate. Strovia also touts their lozenges to be “infused with premium cannabis, cleanly extracted, lab tested and third party verified for both dose accuracy and purity.” \n\n### Delivery Method Matters\n\nIf your familiar with cannabis, you may know that different methods of administration yield different results. Lozenges are interesting in that the membrane of the mouth allows for the infusion of cannabis directly into the bloodstream, and quickly. This is different than a swallowed edible, in that the cannabis is metabolized by the liver and may be more susceptible to stomach acids and other digestive enzymes that can decrease the potency of the THC and CBD.   \n\nDoug from Strovia explained that “absorption through the oral mucosa is simply the most effective delivery method for reaching the [endocannabinoid system](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/5751cbd970410e000b00003a/what-is-the-endocannabinoid-system). But more than that, lozenges are easier to administer to pediatric and geriatric patients as well as patients who have difficulty swallowing or holding down food down.”\n\nRELATED: [BLOOM FARMS CBD CARTRIDGE REVIEW](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/57ba49a00bc21c000b6472c3/bloom-farms-cbd-cartridge-review)\n\nStrovia was interesting enough to us at HelloMD that we decided to do a road test with a few members of our staff. I felt relaxed and social. At the same time and my appetite was stimulated enough to enjoy the dinner and I found the lozenge to be delicious with just enough of sweet from the honey.\n\nThe second time I took the 10mg dose and it was after a particularly long day of work and I found it was just enough to take the edge off. In this instance it was like the background music was turned down to a whisper. This product is wonderful if you need to relax, especially for someone like me where I spend the majority of my time talking on the phone. I also found the soothing effects of the honey on my throat after a day of speaking, which is a wonderful effect of this lozenge.”\n\n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nVeronica - HelloMD Staff,\nStrovia Pomegranate Antioxidant,\nTHC Rich Strovia - 5:1 THC: CBD\n\nOne day last week after work, I decided to open up my new Strovia lozenge and it immediately reminded me of a jolly rancher. I popped it in my mouth and a lovely, strong flavor of pomegranate was what was immediately evident. After a few more minutes I detected a mild cannabis taste, which is fine for me. However, there was a cannabis after taste, particularly on the roof of my mouth, but a glass of water made it imperceptible.\n\nThe effects of the Strovia kicked in pretty quickly. What I immediately noticed was that I had less pain in my right knee, and I was able to perform deep squats and return to standing without struggle. My stress levels were reduced and my mood improved throughout the evening, and I was able to fall asleep right away. I enjoyed a restful night’s sleep without interruption, and woke up feeling refreshed.”\n______________________________________________________________________\n\nChris - HelloMD Staff,\nStrovia Lemon Honey Echinacea,\n20mg THC Rich\n\n“The Honey Lemon Echinacea lozenge is a nice switch from the traditional edible. The lozenge delivery is reminiscent of a Ricola, both in taste and overall experience, which I found incredibly pleasant. The onset of the 20 mg of THC was fast, but not in an overwhelming way. As a high tolerance user, I found the the high to be immediate but sustained over the course of several hours, which is unusual for me with this dosage, which I consider on the lower side. The lozenge itself is pretty big, so if you’re not a fan of hard candy, you may want to drop it in a cup of tea to dissolve as an alternative.”\n\n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nRyan - HelloMD Staff,\nStrovia Pomegranate Antioxidant,\n10mg CBD Rich\n\n\"I decided to try the Strovia at my work desk to see the impact of a CBD edible on my workflow. Anxiety can add a lot of noise to your thought processes and CBD clears this up for me. As a result, I am able to focus much better at the tasks at hand, in combination with fostering a relaxed and well adjusted mood. \n\nThe lozenge dissolved slowly and the effects also came on so slowly. I barely noticed a change in my own affect, a hallmark of a great CBD edible. I found that the rest of the day very went well for me, conversations came much more smoothly and I was able to focus on what I wanted to when I wanted to. I am looking forward to buying my own Strovia and repeating the experience. I hate to be a fanboy, but I really really enjoyed trying the Strovia 10mg CBD lozenge.\"\n\n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Like many people, I often set goals to reach a certain level of fitness and attempt to cut back on sugar or some other fat-inducing food product. Year to year though, there is one resolution that follows me, and that is to be happier and more mentally present in the moment than I have been during the previous year. \r\n\r\nEveryone experiences hardship in their daily life and stress and depression can suddenly begin to weigh on you. As much work as I do to create a healthier mental state, there is always room for improvement. Learning from experience, I now go easier on myself when I make mistakes and I respect my intuition when I think I need to take a day off for my own mental and emotional health. I've also realized that part of creating my happy place comes from a healthy dose of exercise and sound nutrition. These are tools in my toolkit, but there's also one more.\r\n\r\n### My Cannabis Resolution\r\n\r\nI'm going to say it out loud and stay proud, cannabis helps me improve my own mental health and well being. For this reason, I plan to continue to incorporate cannabis into my daily routine during coming year. Cannabis is praised for its ability to relieve pain and tension, but it can also help ease stress and anxiety that is part of everyday life.\r\n\r\nCannabis’s mental health benefits do not stop with anxiety, however. Marijuana has been found to lead to an overall more positive mood. A 2012 study, which was published in the journal _European Neuropsychopharmacology_, found that when the endocannabinoid system is crucial in emotional processing. Essentially, when THC is administered they responded less to negative stimuli compared to people who received a placebo. \r\n\r\n### Improving Mood & Outlook\r\n\r\nWhen people are more responsive to negative stimuli, they are more likely to have mental illnesses like depression, which cannabis can help to combat. Stimulating the the endocannabinoid system through THC consumption can help improve the mood through leading people to have more positive associations compared to negative associations. This study not only found that cannabis can help improve a persons mood, but it also found how deeply the endocannabinoid system is tied into emotional function. \r\n\r\nRELATED: [WHY DOES CANNABIS MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/why-does-cannabis-make-you-feel-good)\r\n\r\nThe mental health benefits of cannabis do not stop with its most prevalent cannabinoid THC, but extend to the more than 80 different cannabinoids that are found in different plant strains. Non-psychoactive cannabinoids like CBD and THCA are gaining traction as elements in cannabis that can help improve your overall health. If there is one general health concept that everyone knows to be true, it is that inflammation is bad for you. Tumeric gained traction this year as a superfood that reduces inflammation, but CBD and THC-A both have similar anti-inflammatory properties. I don’t know about you, but when I don’t feel inflammation I tend to feel great!\r\n\r\n### Incorporating CBD & THCA\r\n\r\nPart of my New Year’s resolution to bettering my health involves consuming THCA and CBD that both will help improve my overall health. Reducing inflammation in my body through consuming these two cannabinoids also helps improve my mental well being and improve my happiness. CBD also helps relieve anxiety and causes calming feelings without being psychoactive. \r\n\r\nGetting the full benefits from cannabis involves embracing the whole plant, not just the components that are the most well known. Cannabis is also full of terpenes alongside its cannabinoids that help provide even more benefits. Terpenes may give cannabis different strains their signature smells, but they also provide effects like alertness, relaxation, mood elevation, and stress relief. Terpenes like limonene and linalool are particularly helpful at relieving stress and promoting relaxation. \r\n\r\n### Let’s Allow Ourselves to Feel Good!\r\n\r\nLet's be honest, cannabis just makes you feel good in general. Whether you're affected by stress or depression, cannabis can just take the edge off when you are having a hard day. Cannabis helps decrease the production of FAAH, fatty acid amide hydrolase, which breaks down anandamide in the body. Anandamide is a endocannabinoid that our body naturally produces that leads to euphoric effects. THC activates the same receptors in the body that anandamide does, naturally stimulating happy and joyous effects. \r\n\r\nCannabis is a great component to add to your New Year’s resolution on health, whatever it may be. To me, one of the most amazing benefits of cannabis is its ability to help me move away from pharmaceutical medications. Whether it be non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, anti-depressants, or opioids, cannabis is a great natural alternative to possibly addictive and harsh pharmaceuticals. Join me in making your new year one filled with health by embracing the amazing and wide-ranging benefits that cannabis can provide. \r\n\r\nHappy New Year to you from everyone at HelloMD and wishing you optimum health and wellness throughout 2017!\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \r\n\r\n________________________________________________________\r\n\r\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Between all the festivities, gift giving, short days and occasional sickness, there is plenty to be stressed about. Let’s face it, the holidays can act as a breeding ground for anxiety and the blues. \n\nSo how can you deal with holiday induced stress and anxiety? I asked some of our staff at HelloMD how they navigate through the holiday season with a modicum of cheer and they’ve offered up some of their favorite product recommendations for bringing the year to a close with a smile on their face. \n\n### CBD Gummy Bears \n\n\"Nothing eases my anxiety like a high CBD strain, however during the holidays I am not always amongst canna-friendly company. Even a quiet vaporizer puff can be too conspicuous amidst the wrong company, which results in more anxiety than I had in the first place! For this reason, I recommend keeping a few CBD canna-bears around for some discreet and effective anxiety relief.\" \n\nRyan - Customer Service\n\n### Kiva Terra Bites\n\n\"[Kiva Terra Bites](https://www.hellomd.com/biz/kiva-confections) are always a favorite of mine for tackling anxiety on the go. At 5 mg per serving these bite sized edibles come in two varieties, chocolate covered blueberries and chocolate covered espresso beans. A low dose of THC can serve as the perfect midday pick me up to combat stress and anxiety, and eating a little chocolate only seems to add to that effect. If you’re in need of an energy boost, be sure to go for the espresso bean flavor, as both chocolate and espresso beans contain caffeine.\" \n\nChris - Business Associate\n\n### Satori Low Dose Edibles\n\n\"[Satori](http://satorichocolates.com/) is a new brand that has yet to hit the shelves of most local dispensaries. These little chocolate love bombs are micro dosed anywhere from 1mg - 10mg. My favorite is to pop in a chocolate covered 3mg strawberry and follow it with 2 pieces of 1mg chocolate raisins every hour or so. Most edibles make me a little sleepy but these morsels put a smile on my face, making me giggly and happy, which is what I need! Satori will be widely available after the first of the year throughout California. Stay tuned, this brand is going to kill it.\"\n\nPamela - Co Founder\n\n### Flower Power Muscle & Joint Balm \n\n\"I don’t leave the house without my Flower Power Muscle & Joint Balm, especially during the busy holiday season. That's either sad commentary on life after 50, or just strong evidence that I finally found a topical that works! Much like the over-the-counter topical market – for pain – the cannabis one is flooded with products to choose from when looking for something to make pain go away. Flower Power is easy to apply and smells great – thanks to all the essential oils mixed for good measure. Mostly importantly, it just works. Flower Power is available in California. \n\nAnd for those of you elsewhere in the US looking to stop pain, I also highly recommend Apothecanna’s Extra-Strength Relieving Body Oil. As a bonus, it comes packaged as beautifully as any cannabis product I’ve seen.\"\n\nLarry - VP of Business Development\n\n### Jane’s Brew Coffee & Tea\n\n\"When I feel under weather a cannabis infused tea or coffee is what I need to cozy up by the fire. There are a number of these on the market, and availability will vary depending on your area, although I’m particularly fond of the Jane’s Brew chamomile tea. \n\nComing in a number of THC and CBD versions, be sure to choose which one is right for you. A warm cup of tea with a just the right amount of THC can go the a long way to help you melt the stress away from a long day. For added holiday bonus points, check out on of their infused hot chocolates.\"\n\nChris - Business Associate\n\n### Om Edibles Lion Balm\n\n\"Whether you are sore from the Black Friday brawl, get stuck sleeping on Uncle Craig’s couch, or are just a casualty of stress, the holiday’s pile on the pressure. I can handle the stress, however my back certainly cannot. The catch though, is that in the presence of my family, I would like to avoid discussing the primary ingredient of the balm slopped on my throbbing lumbar. \n\nOm edibles makes a fantastic balm that also comes in a stick form, much like a stick of deodorant. You simply slip the cap off, give it a twist, and slather it on a tightened back and neck. All of this can be done in a discreet motion, without plopping a big tub of “PROP 215 CANNABIS INFUSED” on the holiday table or retreating to the bathroom for a glob of cream.\"\n\nRyan - Customer Service\n\nRELATED: [CANNABIS CAN RELIEVE STRESS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-can-relieve-stress)\n\n### Girl Scout Cookies\n\n\"[GSC](https://www.hellomd.com/marijuana-strains/girl-scout-cookies) is just the best strain in my opinion. I always have it around in one form or another (the forum cut, thin mint, and platinum varieties are all a treat). This doesn’t have a holiday twist. Anxiety free, 40/60 hybrid, psychedelic when you’re up and sleepy when your down; it is just the best strain for all over stress reduction.\"\n\nRyan - Customer Service\n\n### Platinum Kush \n\n\"Platinum Kush is my go to for stress relief. After hosting Thanksgiving for the first time with my girlfriend for 8 people my stress level was an 8 out of 10. Platinum Kush helps to take the edge off and get me back to a baseline. My preference is to smoke an indica which mellow me out and calm down. Platinum Kush apperently has trace amounts of CBD which relaxes my body and helps take my anxiety down a notch.\"\n\nBart - Customer Service\n\n### GrandDaddy Purple\n\n\"I always have an indica strain on hand, and love them for their deep relaxing effects. I tend to use indicas as a sleep aide as well. [Grand Daddy Purple](https://www.hellomd.com/strains/5a7cbbc4d520d60009f4f4a4) is among my top choices for an indica, but any other purple will do. A higher THC percentage at above 20%, it is fantastic for helping you unwind and get to sleep more quickly.\" \n \nChris - Business Associate\n\n### Chernobyl \n\n\"Laughter is certainly the best medicine and Chernobyl, being one of the few strains that gives me the giggles, will be my go to this holiday season. This fantastic sativa dominant delivers an anxiety free head high that creeps into the dreamy glow of euphoria and intermittent giggles. Perfect for those \"extended family” dinners and those who feel they are in need of a good chuckle.\"\n\nRyan - Customer Service\n\n_______________________________________________________________________\n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. The most common symptoms of menopause range from emotional symptoms, like mood swings and anxiety, to physical symptoms like hot flashes, insomnia, and uncomfortable sex. Marijuana can help with a variety of symptoms caused by menopause, as well as help women who have problems with early onset menopause. \n\n### Estrogen Levels & the Endocannabinoid System\n\n[Endocannabinoid levels are closely linked](http://www.theimpactnetwork.org/medical-marijuana-menopause/) to estrogen levels. Endocannabinoid levels, like estrogen levels, are highest during ovulation. Estrogen helps to regulate the fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), which breaks down the naturally occurring endocannabinoid anandamide. When there's an insufficient amount of estrogen in the system, endocannabinoids will begin to be broken down by the larger presence of FAAH. The body's naturally occurring endocannabinoids can be supplemented with cannabinoids from marijuana to reduce the effects of the breakdown of naturally occurring endocannabinoids and other symptoms related to endocannabinoid deficiency.\n\nVarious medical conditions can cause menopause to come on early, which can sometimes cause even stronger symptoms. Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency is believed to be a cause of early onset menopause, as well as medical conditions such as breast cancer. Estrogen Replacement Therapy, or ERT, is a common treatment for many menopausal and post menopausal women who experience extreme symptoms, but it is not available or recommended for everyone. \n\n### Cannabis Instead of ERT\n\nCannabis can be a great alternative for women who cannot take ERT because of conditions like ovarian cancer or heart disease. ERT is often administered to help prevent adverse problems from menopause like bone loss. The cannabinoids CBD, CBG, CBC, and TCHV have been found to help stimulate bone growth and help prevent the onset of osteoporosis after menopause. Supplementing endocannabinoids from cannabis can help stimulate the body and delay some of the effects of early menopause. \n\nCannabis can also work to regulate the body after menopause. Less estrogen is produced in the body post menopause, so in turn the body produces less natural endocannabinoids. The decrease in endocannabinoids can cause a variety of problems, like poor ability to respond to stress. Cannabis can help supplement the body's natural endocannabinoids and decrease the symptoms associated with lower levels of estrogen and endocannabinoids. \n\nRELATED:[MARIJUANA HELPS RELIEVE MENSTRUAL CRAMPS](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55dcd66a3961660006470000/marijuana-brings-relief-to-women-suffering-from-pms-symptoms)\n\n### Cannabis for Symptom Relief\n\nCannabis can also help fight many of the most common symptoms associated with menopause. Marijuana can help reduce anxiety and stress, which can be a common part of mood swings associated with menopause. CBD heavy strains can be particularly helpful for women who experience anxiety with menopause because of CBD’s ability to ease anxiety problems. \n\nCannabis can also help with insomnia by promoting sleep. THC heavy indica strains are known to be the best at promoting sleep because of THC’s ability to help ease people into sleep. One of the ways marijuana can be the most helpful for women experiencing menopause is easing sexual discomfort during menopause. Women going through menopause often find sex to be uncomfortable due to a decrease in sexual desire or other related issues, such as increased vaginal dryness. The bottom line; marijuana can help with a variety of menopause symptoms for women experiencing it at all points in their life and with various levels of severity. \n\nIf you are new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Many dogs get scared by the noises and commotion of the holiday, causing many to even flee from secure fenced backyards. The dogs run away as a survival instinct caused by the noises, burning smells, and flashes of light. It is important to keep a close eye on your dog this holiday and look for signs of stress. \n\nThere are many different signs of stress to look out for. When dogs are stressed they may excessively lick their paws or nose, refuse food, pace or hide, or shake and pant even though it is not hot. It is important that you keep your dogs on leash around any potential loud noises or fireworks. Some dogs, however, will continue to be anxious even if they will remain at home. Luckily, there are a few different companies that make cannabis infused dog treats that can help calm your dog and keep them stress free this Independence Day. \n\n### Treatibles\n\nTreatibles is a company out of Oakland that make CBD based dog treats. Treatibles contain no THC so your dog won't get high, but they will get relief from their anxiety. The dose for Treatibles is one small treat for every 10 lbs of weight or one large treat for every 25 lbs of weight. Treatibles use quality ingredients and they come in pumpkin and blueberry flavor. Treatibles are gluten-free, non-gmo, vegan, and free from refined sugar. In doing so,\nmany have turned to marijuana. While marijuana is often more efficient\nat [managing PTSD](http://www.newsweek.com/pot-and-ptsd-358139) and\nassociated conditions than a veteran's typical cocktail of narcotics and\nopioids, many veterans don't have access to marijuana as a treatment for\nPTSD.\n\n### What Is PTSD?\n\nPTSD arises after a person experiences a traumatic event. While PTSD\nisn't limited to veterans, the [occurrence rates in post-war\nveterans](http://www.veteransandptsd.com/PTSD-statistics.html) are\nhigher than those in the civilian population. When an individual\nexperiences a traumatic or life-threatening event, the mind and body go\ninto shock, creating [severe\nsymptoms](http://www.helpguide.org/articles/ptsd-trauma/ptsd-in-veterans.htm).\nThese include night terrors, flashbacks, depression, suicidal thoughts,\nirritability, anger, withdrawal and extreme emotional reactions, such as\npanic attacks and irrational fear.\n\n### How Is PTSD Treated?\n\nWhile PTSD is common (the [National Center for\nPTSD](http://www.ptsd.va.gov/) estimates that\n[7-8%](http://www.bendbulletin.com/news/1384056-151/civilians-also-struggle-with-ptsd)\nof civilians are affected), it's tough to treat. Because PTSD presents a\ncomplex set of symptoms, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)\nhas developed a [varied treatment\nplan](http://www.ptsd.va.gov/professional/treatment/overview/clinicians-guide-to-medications-for-ptsd.asp)\nthat includes group and private therapy sessions and doses of opiates,\nantidepressants, and benzodiazepines. Unfortunately, this cocktail comes\nwith [side\neffects](http://www.nytimes.com/health/guides/disease/post-traumatic-stress-disorder/medications.html).\nThese side effects include difficulty sleeping, intense anxiety, and\nsuicidal thoughts and actions. Because of this, marijuana is being\nevaluated as an alternative option with fewer adverse effects.\n\n### Why Is Marijuana a Safer Option?\n\nMarijuana is an effective treatment option for everything from[anxiety\nto sleep\ndisorders,\nand recent scientific evidence is proving that marijuana is also an\neffective treatment for PTSD. According to [a 2014\nstudy](http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/02791072.2013.873843)\nconducted in New Mexico and published in the *Journal of Psychoactive\nDrugs*, cannabis can reduce the symptoms of PTSD in affected veterans by\n75 percent. This is because marijuana produces an effect known as\n\"[memory\nextinction](http://www.europeanneuropsychopharmacology.com/article/S0924-977X(08)00172-7/abstract?cc=y),\"\nwhich diminishes traumatic memories. Other researchers, such as Dr.\nSuzanne Sisley (a PTSD specialist), have been emboldened by past [study\nresults](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24935052) and are currently\nspearheading new cannabis studies in states that have legalized\nmarijuana.\n\nWhile these studies are promising, proving marijuana's effectiveness in\nPTSD treatment is only half the battle. Up until very recently, veterans\nwho expressed an interest in marijuana for PTSD treatment risked losing\ntheir other prescription drugs, because marijuana, as a Schedule I drug,\nviolates the [Opioid Pain Care\nAgreement](http://www.aspmn.org/Documents/Webinars/Taking_Opioids_Responsibly201108_FINAL.pdf).\nEven after medical marijuana was legal in many states, VA doctors were\nroutinely discouraged from talking about the treatment option with their\npatients due to the threat of [having their licenses\nrevoked](http://www.amc.edu/Academic/bioethics/documents/Geppert_Publication.pdf)\nor facing legal charges.\n\nTo answer the cry from veterans for medical marijuana and fill the\ninformation and care gaps, independent advocacy groups such as [Veterans\nfor Medical Marijuana](http://www.veteransformedicalmarijuana.org/)\n(founded by an Air Force veteran) began to spring up around the country.\nThese independent groups worked tirelessly to rally against the VA's\nstrict cannabis policy and, in time, they brought about change. In 2011,\nhowever, the VA began to [allow some breathing\nroom](https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/more-veterans-press-va-to-recognize-medical-marijuana-as-treatment-option/2014/11/15/51666986-6a7b-11e4-b053-65cea7903f2e_story.html)\nfor medical marijuana use in response to intense pressure from the\nveteran community. In addition to prohibiting doctors from revoking a\npatient's access to prescription drugs due to medical marijuana use, the\nnew VA measures also laid out monitoring programs for medical marijuana\naccess.\n\nWhile it remains difficult for veterans in states where [medical\nmarijuana](http://medicalmarijuana.procon.org/view.resource.php?resourceID=000881)\nis not legal to access life-changing, cannabis-centric PTSD treatment,\nmany veterans are hopeful that future research and changing attitudes\nabout medical marijuana can provide easier access to this life-changing\ndrug.","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.5151515151515151,"src":"/static/0c6d3a882917f7af2f722023461ab6b8/ee604/1d81942f110cc28230631f363187b2b6.png","srcSet":"/static/0c6d3a882917f7af2f722023461ab6b8/69585/1d81942f110cc28230631f363187b2b6.png 200w,\n/static/0c6d3a882917f7af2f722023461ab6b8/497c6/1d81942f110cc28230631f363187b2b6.png 400w,\n/static/0c6d3a882917f7af2f722023461ab6b8/ee604/1d81942f110cc28230631f363187b2b6.png 800w,\n/static/0c6d3a882917f7af2f722023461ab6b8/9aa6b/1d81942f110cc28230631f363187b2b6.png 982w","srcWebp":"/static/0c6d3a882917f7af2f722023461ab6b8/58556/1d81942f110cc28230631f363187b2b6.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/0c6d3a882917f7af2f722023461ab6b8/61e93/1d81942f110cc28230631f363187b2b6.webp 200w,\n/static/0c6d3a882917f7af2f722023461ab6b8/1f5c5/1d81942f110cc28230631f363187b2b6.webp 400w,\n/static/0c6d3a882917f7af2f722023461ab6b8/58556/1d81942f110cc28230631f363187b2b6.webp 800w,\n/static/0c6d3a882917f7af2f722023461ab6b8/32383/1d81942f110cc28230631f363187b2b6.webp 982w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2055-markdown","title":"Is Your Endocannabinoid System in Balance?","slug":"is-your-endocannabinoid-system-in-balance","content":"You balance your work with your family life, fatty foods with healthy ones, stress with\r\nhappiness. But what about your endocannabinoid system? The\r\nendocannabinoid system is a pivotal body system that impacts a multitude\r\nof other health factors and, when it's improperly balanced, it can have\r\na negative impact on your overall health. Here's what you need to know:\r\n\r\n**What Is the Endocannabinoid System?**\r\n\r\nThe endocannabinoid system (ECS) consists of a selection of highly\r\nspecialized lipids and receptors within the brain. The system acts on\r\nthe nervous system to produce things like hunger, pain, responses to\r\nstress, memory building, inflammation and muscle control. The ECS also\r\nhas a direct impact on things like sleep, muscle control, energy and\r\nmood.\r\n\r\n**Cannabinoid Receptors 101**\r\n\r\nThe ECS relies on a series of cannabinoid receptors to support its\r\nfunction. These receptors are actually cell membrane receptors that are\r\nshaped like an \"S.\" Each receptor has seven parts that are designed to\r\npermeate cell membranes, where they couple with G-proteins.\r\n\r\nThis coupling is what produces a sensation response within the human\r\nbrain. The compounds that couple with cannabinoid receptors are known as\r\n\"lipophilic,\" or \"fat-loving.\" These compounds include such naturally\r\nsynthesized compounds as endocannabinoids, phytocannabinoids (these are\r\nplant-derived compounds such as Cannabidiol, which comes from cannabis)\r\nand synthetic cannabinoids.\r\n\r\nCannabinoid receptors are broken into two separate groups: CB1 and CB2.\r\nThese groups are quite distinctly different, although they do share some\r\nsimilar traits. CB1 receptors, for example, are located predominantly in\r\nthe brain, kidneys, liver, lungs, body fat, muscle tissue, bones and\r\nheart. These receptors are responsible for processing the psychoactive\r\ntraits of THC. CB2 receptors, on the other hand, are located primarily\r\nin the immune system and bloodstream, and in lesser amounts in the gut,\r\nmuscle, bone, nervous system and liver. These receptors provide pain\r\nrelief.\r\n\r\n**Endocannabinoid Receptors and the Balance of the ECS**\r\n\r\nWhen we talk about the balance of the ECS, we're talking about the\r\npresence and activity of CB1 versus CB2 within the body. In this case,\r\nhowever, \"balance\" doesn't mean a 50/50 split between CB1 and CB2.\r\nInstead, optimal health can be achieved when people have slightly higher\r\nlevels of CB2 than they do CB1. This is because [research has\r\nshown](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3267552/) that people\r\nwith high levels of CB1 suffer from conditions associated with stress\r\nand anxiety, such as paranoia, appetite loss, nausea and vomiting, pain\r\nand improper immune function.\r\n\r\nA high level of CB2, on the other hand, is associated with positive\r\neffects, such as decreased inflammation, rapid tissue reconstruction and\r\nhealing, higher metabolic function, healthier levels of insulin, and\r\nhealthy energy levels.\r\n\r\nIn light of this, researchers have been working to produce effective CB1\r\nblockers that can decrease the negative impacts of excess CB1 while\r\nhighlighting the positive aspects of CB2, such as increased metabolic\r\nfunction. These products aim to improve the symptoms associated with\r\nconditions like metabolic syndrome (such as elevated blood pressure and\r\nblood sugar, high levels of body fat, and high cholesterol levels),\r\nwhich is known to increase the likelihood of stroke, diabetes and\r\nvarious forms of heart disease.\r\n\r\nWhile more research is needed on the topic of CB1 blockers, preliminary\r\ndata has already shown that lowering CB1 levels in the body can help to\r\nreduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, lower blood sugar, and aid\r\nin abdominal fat loss, which results in a decreased risk for conditions\r\nlike type II diabetes and heart disease.\r\n\r\n**Balancing the ECS**\r\n\r\nBefore you write it off completely, it's important to remember that CB1\r\ndoes serve an important purpose. Recent research has suggested that\r\nmaintaining the correct levels of CB1 within the body protects against\r\ndepressive symptoms and helps [lower stress in\r\nrodents](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3808114/). This\r\nproves the importance of maintaining balance in the ECS.\r\n\r\nOne of the most astounding functions of the ECS is that it helps control\r\nand enhance the function of the integumentary system, which includes\r\nhair and human skin cells. When the ECS is balanced, negative skin cell\r\ngrowth and various forms of inflammation immediately decline. Because of\r\nthis, targeted manipulation of ECS balance has been posed as a treatment\r\noption for people suffering from painful or dangerous skin conditions\r\nsuch as acne, dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema and systemic sclerosis.\r\n\r\nIn addition to exploring CB1 blockers to help maintain a balance between\r\nCB1 and CB2 within the human brain, scientists are also studying the\r\nimpact of diet. Currently, there is evidence that [ample intake of\r\nomega-3s and\r\nomega-6s](http://www.nature.com/ijo/journal/v40/n1/full/ijo2015135a.html)\r\ncan support the proper function of cannabinoid receptors within the\r\nbrain.\r\n\r\n**Perfect Balance Leads to Enhanced Function**\r\n\r\nBalancing the ECS is a delicate process but, when done correctly, it can\r\nhave a marked positive effect on lives. People with excessively high CB1\r\nlevels often struggle with things like inflammation, increased risk of\r\nheart disease, obesity and diabetes. If CB1 is inhibited too much,\r\nhowever, it leads to conditions like infertility, depression and\r\ndecreased immune function. At the same time, when CB2 levels are too\r\nhigh, decreased immune function and impaired tissue healing are the\r\nresults.\r\n\r\nIn light of these findings, it's clear that, to obtain optimal health,\r\npeople must focus more strongly on building and maintaining the proper\r\nbalance between CB1 and CB2 through the responsible use of CB1 blockers\r\nand proper diet.\r\n\r\n[Photo Credit](https://www.flickr.com/photos/ionelpop/3497683677/in/photolist-6k5xuZ-aCxyQp-5s4UHq-6mALK4-6LSHuE-6NhXom-6A2H4j-7rSMrd-gqWG4G-cKkK7J-r27bTR-e7Ccs-5EXdWc-iLSRKW-6t3oND-NaD7c-9VF398-4i23w4-7qLrMY-99JBcD-4RuyQh-4Cn1S6-9AWcjM-jj8Tr-4b6B4P-6hTeA5-7GzQ2Q-4FBdtH-8es7qz-ggmxG-7ffDWk-969QLS-aTwPdT-6uAL8c-dRn1y-35tLLb-4kNKhg-9Mo2MP-exre5x-5BSWy3-966AkK-4P99b4-6JaZCt-5bF8ZX-8JA2Ux-5cY2fx-yVcAM-cSrFwG-cf4ZGG-9C5REj)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABQAAAANCAIAAAAmMtkJAAAACXBIWXMAAAsTAAALEwEAmpwYAAACsUlEQVQoz1VR70tTURi+9A9EESXhh75EQShEH/qFfglkpJXZlz4YJJQgZir+WKZi03CVhBilJqykqSWpDMd00zmdNLFN3XT5c7rNLee23Mrd3XvOvffcezvbcNHDOZz3vOd9Du/zvIQgCBazefCLMhAM8DwPIWQOwOLFsngz/wNTEEK4kggEgydTjhdkntuxmQCHaIqiaRoAQEMQO+JBEvgJf7e6vu5yuTmECCQIteWln4puh8wayCEqQU4SIEjGOI+7CodCPY3l+XmS3WCQEETRu7GmbZHOWGwkYHieYxCPq+gYKNwIoBMAOESiGPb/XHgrlaSlqtRqguNYr2+vUD6QJ1NJ23Uet9fvXCX/7DEMgCzLCQKLeAYCBlIIRHweZ/OYv0HeWZqfrTVZCBgFWuNSzpPe9q/TeU3DI0bryox+cXrUu2xenjWs6AbCTtvOmtlt1XsXxgc75JkywzPDXt/8lm4XEpCCvX3qU5KyG097c5t1BrtPFEWSpiP7+5HIfsC1EfI4olQ0fiURxzxs0Wa8WMjv2ZqY/kYEXOuKl00nMgsvF3fdfK7vnnSICGLXYByxnhEfdw5i2aLASLvnLrU46o3hiSElEfa57SOfL9ypTJVUXX3cXaW0kpgIEnOi425RyVGxkH7QZsxoNMkMO8ND/YTP7fih6TmfXXT0WsXFko9ZtUOmJafIc1GKTk7oYMKMPxC8V6e4VdVV3Koan7URPq9n06Spea08k1N5NqvwWPr1+yX1WHY0StEHwGQsRBTQnH2j4o265v1obnXHzPI2EfT7Pd/1kxNTR1LTDp++ciglPetuMUJchCSpf4iSJCnyrGJAr9DMV7f1F8g+bG77CJz9ZbeYZ2Yr6+QNr949Kqtu7VTCmGrsEYi7lggAx8Ix06J1MzA8ZVEZ5n5Hon8B0rFwhMi2XV4AAAAASUVORK5CYII=","aspectRatio":1.5267175572519085,"src":"/static/e4bc33e90fbf073c98a68bf53b1a8b87/ee604/791a9068fcdcdc7636ab94fbe31e8b00.png","srcSet":"/static/e4bc33e90fbf073c98a68bf53b1a8b87/69585/791a9068fcdcdc7636ab94fbe31e8b00.png 200w,\n/static/e4bc33e90fbf073c98a68bf53b1a8b87/497c6/791a9068fcdcdc7636ab94fbe31e8b00.png 400w,\n/static/e4bc33e90fbf073c98a68bf53b1a8b87/ee604/791a9068fcdcdc7636ab94fbe31e8b00.png 800w,\n/static/e4bc33e90fbf073c98a68bf53b1a8b87/f3583/791a9068fcdcdc7636ab94fbe31e8b00.png 1200w,\n/static/e4bc33e90fbf073c98a68bf53b1a8b87/df997/791a9068fcdcdc7636ab94fbe31e8b00.png 1204w","srcWebp":"/static/e4bc33e90fbf073c98a68bf53b1a8b87/58556/791a9068fcdcdc7636ab94fbe31e8b00.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/e4bc33e90fbf073c98a68bf53b1a8b87/61e93/791a9068fcdcdc7636ab94fbe31e8b00.webp 200w,\n/static/e4bc33e90fbf073c98a68bf53b1a8b87/1f5c5/791a9068fcdcdc7636ab94fbe31e8b00.webp 400w,\n/static/e4bc33e90fbf073c98a68bf53b1a8b87/58556/791a9068fcdcdc7636ab94fbe31e8b00.webp 800w,\n/static/e4bc33e90fbf073c98a68bf53b1a8b87/99238/791a9068fcdcdc7636ab94fbe31e8b00.webp 1200w,\n/static/e4bc33e90fbf073c98a68bf53b1a8b87/91ab5/791a9068fcdcdc7636ab94fbe31e8b00.webp 1204w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_2050-markdown","title":"Veterans Deserve Medical Marijuana ― Might Get It Soon","slug":"veterans-deserve-medical-marijuana-might-get-it-soon","content":"Did you know that doctors who work for the United States Department of\nVeterans Affairs (VA) aren't allowed to prescribe medical marijuana to\nveterans? It doesn't matter if the doctors and patients live in states\nwhere medical marijuana is legal. Moreover, doctors can't even talk to\nveterans about the advantages of marijuana AT ALL! How's that for free\nspeech in America?\n\n**Congress Takes Action (Seriously)**\n\nAs you might have guessed, as a doctor, this marijuana gag order makes\nme gag. There's reason to be optimistic, though. Some of our elected\nleaders are coming around. For instance, in 2016, 21 U.S. House members\nand senators sent a letter to the VA. This group included Democrats and\nRepublicans, and the message was in favor of medical marijuana.\n\nYou see, the no-cannabis VA policy was set to expire in late January\n2016. Therefore, those lawmakers were trying to change the minds of VA\nleaders. Their letter stated that VA doctors who practice in states\nwhere medical marijuana is lawful should be able to discuss this kind of\ntherapy.\n\nThe Senate actually approved that rule change back in November 2015. At\nthe time, it was included in a funding bill. But of course, politics is\ncomplicated. The bill got rewritten, and this policy was taken out.\nTherefore, it never became law. And I thought medical school was hard!\n\n**Can the CARERS Act Save the Day?**\n\nThere's still hope for this legal change. It could become part of the\n2016 appropriations bill. If it does, though, it would need to be voted\non each year to remain law. Or it could become a separate law. If that\nwere the case, it would be a permanent statute, and Congress wouldn't\nhave to keep voting on it annually.\n\nIndeed, in March 2015, Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., Sen. Kirsten\nGillibrand, D-N.Y., and Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., proposed just such a law.\nIt's called the Compassionate Access, Research Expansion and Respect\nStates (CARERS) Act of 2015.\n\nIf CARERS passes, states could legalize medical marijuana as they deem\nfit. Also, medical researchers would have more freedom to study the\nbenefits of this therapy. And yes, VA doctors could finally recommend it\nto their patients as state law permits.\n\n**Battling PTSD**\n\nMany veterans who are returning from battle face special health issues.\nPost-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of them.\n[PTSD](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/559ade1b36643300061c0000/recovery-from-trauma-the-role-of-medical-marijuana-in-ptsd-treatment)\nis a term for the depression and anxiety that happen after a trauma. The\ndisorder often involves vivid flashbacks, nightmares, social isolation\nand a tendency to become violently startled. It can also lead to\ninsomnia and extreme eruptions of anger.\n\nNaturally, the horrors of combat often bring about PTSD. However,\nscientific evidence is showing that medical marijuana can really reduce\nits effects.\n\nTake, for instance, [a\nstudy](http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/05/140522104850.htm)\nthat was led by Dr. George Greer of the nonprofit Heffter Research\nInstitute. Between 2009 and 2011, researchers looked at how medical\nmarijuana affected those with PTSD. The Journal of Psychoactive Drugs\n[published](http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02791072.2013.873843)\nthe results, which were highly encouraging. The average patient who used\ncannabis had his or her PTSD effects lessened by a whopping 75 percent!\n\n**Reducing Chronic Pain**\n\nIf you're a vet, you might be dealing with chronic physical pain due to\nthe wounds you sustained when you were fighting for our country. When it\ncomes to pain relief, medical marijuana shows great promise as well.\n\nFor example, in December 2015, the [Journal of\nPain](http://www.jpain.org/article/S1526-5900(15)00837-8/abstract) put\nout the results of a major study on cannabis and chronic pain, one that\nbegan in 2004. Dr. Mark Ware of Montreal's Research Institute of the\nMcGill University Health Centre led this endeavor. (Medical marijuana is\nlegal in Canada.) Several Canadian pain treatment facilities worked\ntogether on this study. Researchers carefully followed 215 adults, each\nfor a one-year period. All of those participants had the option of\neating, smoking or inhaling their cannabis. Meanwhile, a control group\nof 216 chronic pain patients went without marijuana for a year.\n\nIt demonstrated that, while marijuana provided pain relief, it didn't\nlead to any higher rates of serious side effects. On top of that, the\ncannabis frequently put many of the patients in better moods.\n\n**Hope for Vets Who Want Medical Marijuana**\n\nFinally, remember that no VA doctor will ever be forced to prescribe\ncannabis. And no veteran should ever be pressured to take it. It'll\nsimply become another treatment option that doctors and patients should\nbe allowed to talk about in privacy. If the DEA gets their act together\nand take cannabis off of the Schedule 1 list, formal studies in the\nUnited States could finally begin in earnest. When the VA actually\nrealizes that that all studies from around the world to date show the\nenormous benefit of cannabis to treat PTSD and chronic pain, our brave\nmen and women who've served in the armed forces can get the relief they\ndeserve.\n\n[Photo Credit](https://www.flickr.com/photos/soldiersmediacenter/8958723249/in/photolist-eDDNiF-6R7toY-6R7Dhb-6RP4r7-6RK17R-6R3u8R-6R3yeK-6R3zg8-6R7rnj-6R3qvD-6R7vUq-6R7wCs-6R7BYW-6R3qcn-6R3nHn-6R3uSR-6R7D5L-6R7vb9-6R3pZc-6R7skG-7ZkGBK-wzZThs-wA7tk4-6RHwLc-7jSRoo-6KzRrX-6ZJwL2-7aG8wk-8tRr4Z-aQZTfT-8uYY6S-8uYXBh-8uVTqx-eUpwjj-8vkFVw-c3vzES-9jZf4X-aXQCZt-ppZi6S-8EGRT4-fjZ3DE-8QSLjk-8zPfCv-76Y8EM-9pnwow-8rX3tY-79xHCG-5PbtDn-9NtCVv-8uYX59)","image":{"childImageSharp":{"fluid":{"base64":"data:image/png;base64,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","aspectRatio":1.4598540145985401,"src":"/static/eb5963a64a88791cd373293480f137d1/ee604/7ba1ef38aaaa0db126654e32267ec38b.png","srcSet":"/static/eb5963a64a88791cd373293480f137d1/69585/7ba1ef38aaaa0db126654e32267ec38b.png 200w,\n/static/eb5963a64a88791cd373293480f137d1/497c6/7ba1ef38aaaa0db126654e32267ec38b.png 400w,\n/static/eb5963a64a88791cd373293480f137d1/ee604/7ba1ef38aaaa0db126654e32267ec38b.png 800w,\n/static/eb5963a64a88791cd373293480f137d1/e4889/7ba1ef38aaaa0db126654e32267ec38b.png 1081w","srcWebp":"/static/eb5963a64a88791cd373293480f137d1/58556/7ba1ef38aaaa0db126654e32267ec38b.webp","srcSetWebp":"/static/eb5963a64a88791cd373293480f137d1/61e93/7ba1ef38aaaa0db126654e32267ec38b.webp 200w,\n/static/eb5963a64a88791cd373293480f137d1/1f5c5/7ba1ef38aaaa0db126654e32267ec38b.webp 400w,\n/static/eb5963a64a88791cd373293480f137d1/58556/7ba1ef38aaaa0db126654e32267ec38b.webp 800w,\n/static/eb5963a64a88791cd373293480f137d1/4bc19/7ba1ef38aaaa0db126654e32267ec38b.webp 1081w","sizes":"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px"}}}}},{"node":{"id":"Article_1973-markdown","title":"5 Reasons to Get Legal and Stop Buying Marijuana from a Dealer","slug":"5-reasons-to-get-legal-and-stop-buying-marijuana-from-a-dealer","content":"Are you so cozy with your drug dealer you send him or her Christmas cards? Maybe you’ve had this ongoing relationship for quite some time, perhaps for years, and you’re just fine with it. You get your pot easily and receive what you feel is a private, friendly and expedient service. Your dealer reaps the monetary reward and has a thriving social life as a result. Here’s the catch though; you have no idea what you’re really getting, and in many cases it may be very hazardous to your health. Not just a little, but a lot.\n\nOne of our guiding principles at [HelloMD](https://www.hellomd.com/) is that patients deserve access to safe medicine. For this reason, we are in favor of industry regulation, which includes consistent lab testing. Many people believe that cannabis is safe because it is a plant and as such, it is all natural. In some cases this is true, however by the time most people receive their cannabis it has passed through many hands and gone through many different chemical processes i.e., it may be far from ‘natural’ and closer to toxic. If you get your cannabis from your local drug dealer, you may be ingesting a wide array of nasties, unbeknownst to yourself and your well-intentioned ‘friend’.\n\n**The top 5 reasons to stop buying weed from your dealer:**\n\n\n**1. Microbial Material**\n\nHere is just a small sampling of microbial material that shows up in cannabis: Ecoli, yeast, botrytis (fungus), toilet water bacteria, and the deadly mold Aspergillus.\n\n[SC Labs](http://sclabs.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=featured&Itemid=552), a well known cannabis focused analytics laboratory in California, recently posted a [video on cannabis lab testing](https://www.merryjane.com/news/video-original-seed-to-strain-sc-labs?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_campaign=c028ee61bd-Newsletter_Number_4&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_b2264ec13f-c028ee61bd-143695717). In the video, Nate from SC Labs, says: \n\n>“During certain seasons we see up to 20 % of the cannabis coming in for micro bio tested cannabis failing screens. This means there is a large amount of micro bio contaminated cannabis in the marketplace.”\n\nUnknowingly, you may be ingesting these kinds of microbes. Gross. \n\n**2. Phosphoload**\n\nDue to the lack of regulatory oversight, growers can use products that make their plants look good, but these plants are not a healthy and safe alternative for the patient on the other end. Phosphoload is what is known as a ‘bud hardener’ and will create a larger more beautiful bud. Buyers often think the larger, super green bud is superior, but they are mistaken. Phosphorous, which is the main component in phosphoload, is [‘deemed to be carcinogenic to humans’](http://www.rightdiagnosis.com/h/human_carcinogen_phosphorus_32/intro.htm). It is interesting to note that many labs we talk to say this practice is more prevalent in Southern California, especially in the Los Angeles area.\n\n**3. Pesticides**\n\nIngesting pesticides, even in small doses, can be very hazardous to your health. Many farmers still use illegal and banned pesticides on cannabis because in many cases it will yield a larger crop. If you ingest cannabis with pesticide, you may be feeling the long-term effects of pesticides, whether you know it or not. As stated in [‘Pesticide Use in Marijuana Production](http://www.beyondpesticides.org/assets/media/documents/watchdog/documents/PesticideUseCannabisProduction.pdf) “cannabis is not typically filtered when its smoke is inhaled, and therefore smokers may expose themselves to much higher levels of pesticides and degradates.” The most common pesticides include pyrethrins, pyrethroids, and Avid (snail killer), all products found in your local home and garden store. \n\nRobert Martin, Co-Founder of [CW labs says](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55ca3cd435343600060f0000/are-there-neurotoxins-in-your-marijuana):\n\n>“We test for 33 of the most commonly used pesticides, as dictated by the EPA. Pesticides are an awful thing to have in medication; they do not break down in your body no matter how you ingest them. Having pesticides in the body is not good for a patient’s health in any way, shape or form. Patients should be aware, that when concentrates (shatter, wax, hash oil) are made from cannabis that have been treated by pesticides, the pesticides are in an extremely concentrated state just like the marijuana.”\n\n**4. Residual Solvents**\n\nThe cannabis plant is full of cannabinoids. The two most well known cannabinoids are THC and CBD. The most common way to remove the cannabinoids & terpenes from the cannabis plant is to use a chemical solvent. Butane, hexane, isopropyl alcohol and ethanol are commonly used to make cannabis extractions. Once a cannabis flower is submerged in a solvent the cannabinoids, terpenes and other ingredients come to the fore. Through a complex scientific process, dangerous solvents are removed to make the product safe for ingestion. It is important to remove all traces of solvent. Cannabis testing laboratories will look for residual solvents such as butane within a hash oil. Toxic residual solvents are unsafe for anyone to ingest. \n\nButane infusion anyone?\n\n**5. …And Other Crazy, Random Stuff Found in Cannabis**\n\n>* Growth hormones \n\n>* Aflatoxins and poisonous and cancer-causing chemicals that are produced by certain molds\n\n>* Untested chemicals being used by growers, which contain chemicals such as cholinesterase inhibitors, a deadly neurotoxin \n\n>* Bacteria from an unsterile environment-often occurs when storing the plant, dirty screens and an unhygienic work environment\n\nDo you eat in a dirty restaurant? Most likely if you walk in and see filth, you walk right out. Obviously, you don’t want to get sick. The cannabis marketplace, in California and elsewhere, has been highly unregulated to date, although the tide is turning. The lack of regulation has unfortunately put cannabis consumers at risk. Laboratories such as [SC Labs](http://sclabs.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=featured&Itemid=552), [SteepHill Labs](http://steephill.com/) and [CW Labs](http://www.cwanalytical.com) act on behalf of the consumer, publishing results which let growers, dispensaries and consumers know exactly what they are ingesting. For this reason HelloMD always advises patients to go to reputable dispensaries that conduct regular lab testing. Within the industry today, lab tested cannabis is the only way you can ensure the quality and safety of the cannabis you ingest. \n\nSo back to your drug dealer…I think it’s time you broke up. Available in Colorado, Washington, Arizona, Oregon and California, Mary’s was the first to offer medical marijuana consumers transdermal patches. Mary’s transdermals, discreet patches that are worn on the skin, won numerous awards including Most Innovative Product at the CannAwards in 2015. Mary’s is re-thinking how cannabis is used, taking cues from consumption methods for pharmaceutical treatments, with great success.\r\n\r\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en) \r\n\r\n### What Are Marijuana Transdermal Patches?\r\n\r\nTransdermal patches are medicated adhesive patches placed on a venous area of the skin. They release small amounts of medication into the bloodstream over a long period of time. To explain how the patches are different from topical creams, Graham Sorkin of Mary’s Medicinals says, “Topical creams can typically be absorbed by the top one to three layers of skin and may offer pain relief locally, to say a shoulder or knee. Transdermal patches differ from topical creams in that the medicine goes through all seven layers of skin and enters directly into the bloodstream. Transdermal patches deliver systematic rather than localized relief.”\r\n\r\n### Pros of Using Cannabis Patches\r\n\r\nPatches allow for absorption at a steady rate over a longer period of time. They don’t require a person to remember to dose at regular intervals, and they can even be used with an upset stomach. Nitroglycerin and nicotine patches are two of the more well-known medicated patches associated with traditional western medicine.\r\n“Transdermal patches are not new,” Graham contends. “However, using them as a delivery method for cannabis is. We find that our consumers already feel comfortable with a transdermal patch. Many of our consumers are elderly, and patches are not only familiar but also a benign way to consume cannabis for pain relief.”\r\n\r\nAn added benefit to transdermal patches is the accuracy in dosing. Unlike edibles, which are first absorbed in the stomach, a patch delivers the medicine directly into the bloodstream. Interestingly, Graham notes, “A 10 mg dose from a transdermal patch is roughly equivalent to what you might feel from an 80 mg serving from an edible. This is due to the high bio-availability with the patch; it enters into the blood which results in 100% cannabinoid uptake.”\r\n\r\nAs absorption happens steadily over a longer period of time Graham says, “We often hear from people that they don’t even notice the patch or a different feeling except when they realize there is an absence of pain. That’s an incredible relief for people who’ve lived with chronic pain.”\r\n\r\nRELATED: [DO CANNABIS TOPICALS PASS THE DRUG TEST?](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/574b679b982db9000a000055/do-cannabis-topicals-pass-the-drug-test)\r\n\r\n### Marijuana Transdermal Gel Pens Accompany the Patches\r\n\r\nAlthough dosing is accurate with the patches, Mary’s believes some people may wish to augment the patch with a personalized, blended cannabinoid ratio. For this reason, Mary’s developed a line of [transdermal gel pens](http://www.marysmedicinals.com/products-properties/), which are meant to be an accompaniment to the transdermal patch.\r\n\r\nThe gel pen microdoses different cannabinoids and can be rubbed directly into the skin for additional relief. “People with migraines indicate that using a transdermal gel rubbed directly into their temples provides pain relief,” says Graham.\r\n\r\n### Cannabis Transdermal Patches Are Unlikely to Get You High\r\n\r\nThe majority of Mary’s transdermal patches are non-psychotropic. Non-psychotropic patches include cannabidiol (CBD), cannabinol (CBN), tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) and their cannabidiol: tetrahydrocannabinol (CBD:THC) 1:1 offering. “To date we haven’t heard from anyone that they have gotten too high or that the patch has even made them uncomfortable,” says Graham. “If you don’t like the feeling you have from a patch, then you can take it off and the feeling will go away very quickly. When you smoke too much cannabis, you may be stuck with an uncomfortable feeling. If you take a patch off, within 10 minutes the amount of cannabinoids in your system will go down.”\r\n\r\nLooking at Mary’s testimonials, you’ll see a variety of patients with different medical conditions finding relief with the transdermal patches. Although Mary’s developed products for the medicinal market, the company is cautious about advising patients medically.\r\n\r\n“When people reach out to us with specific medical conditions and concerns, we want to offer them the best possible advice. For this reason, we partnered with [Realm of Caring](https://www.theroc.us/), a Colorado-based nonprofit that provides support for people using cannabis as therapy.”\r\n\r\nMary’s Medicinals can be found in [several locations nationwide](http://www.marysmedicinals.com/find-marys-products/). Additionally, the company has launched Mary’s Nutritionals, which offers CBD-only products derived from hemp for both human and pet consumption.\r\n\r\nIf you’re new to cannabis and want to learn more, take a look at our [Cannabis 101](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/cannabis-101-your-quick-guide-to-medical-marijuana) post. Care By Design conducted a [recent study](https://www.cbd.org/largest-survey-patients-using-cbd) with over 600 people, from their customer base, to better understand why they use the products and the overall benefits received.\n\nThe results not only demonstrate that cannabis works for many medical conditions, but it confirms a [previous study](http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25255903) published in 2014 by Ryan-Ibarra, et al. Both of these studies show that that most common indication for medical cannabis use, about 31%, is for [chronic pain](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/562150d03232620006450000/top-14-marijuana-strains-for-different-kinds-of-pain) and [arthritis](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/55a546996636300006230000/medical-marijuana-a-safe-alternative-for-arthritis-inflammation). Not surprisingly, 72-92% of patients using cannabis for these conditions found that it significantly decreased pain symptoms. \n\nAccording to the research, 4-8% of the patient base suffers from [migraines](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/559ac07d3664330006070000/taking-queues-from-the-past-medical-marijuana-can-provide-migraine-relief). Migraine pain significantly decreased in almost 100% of people taking the CBD-rich cannabis concentrates. This finding is particularly remarkable as most prescription medication does not perform nearly as well and most includes impactful side effects. Most participants indicated that their overall sense of wellbeing increased by about 88% after using the CBD-rich products.
