No combustion or burning takes place—as it does with smoking—at these lower temperatures. This light cannabis vapor is quite different from cannabis smoke both in taste and effect, and for some it’s the ideal way to medicate. \n\nThat said, not all vaping is the same. There are a variety of ways patients can vape, and these choices can make a big difference when it comes to the resulting medicinal experience. For one, you can vape either cannabis flower or cannabis concentrates. While there are some vaporizers that allow patients to vape either of these interchangeably, most vaporizers specialize in one or the other. If you have a preference, make sure you’re purchasing the right type of vaporizing device to consume your cannabis. \n\nVaporizers designed for flower are usually either portable handheld devices—which usually involve a slot to put your flower in, a button and something to inhale through—or large table-top vapes—which often involve a base that heats the flower and an airtight bag that fills with vapor. Once filled with vapor, the bags are then taken off the base and patients inhale the contents. \n\nWhile some of these flower vaporizers come with attachments that allow users to vape concentrates as well, there are many vaporizers designed particularly for concentrates. E-pens for example are small personal vaporizers about the size of a pen. These primarily consist of a battery, which works with a variety of attachments.\nYou can find pre-filled vape cartridges or get a refillable heating component to use with any concentrate you choose. You can also find fancier options that go beyond the average e-pen with larger batteries that hold more power or ones that let you adjust the temperature to your exact preferences. \n\nDabbing is another way that people vaporize concentrates, but not all dabbing is actually vaping. (We’ll cover dabbing in more depth later on in the series.) Dabbing—which involves additional equipment and some finesse—isn’t ideal for folks who are new to vaping medical marijuana. As one of New York’s approved methods of ingestion, vaping can provide quick-acting, discreet relief for a number of ailments. But where oral methods like tinctures and capsules have an established medical history dating back centuries, the vaporizer is a recently invented form of administration that patients may be unfamiliar with.\n\nFOLLOW US ON [FACEBOOK](https://www.facebook.com/pg/hellomdcompany/posts/) & [INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/hellomd_com/?hl=en)\n\n### A Fresh Take on an Old(ish) Concept\n\nThe original idea for the vaporizer is attributed to a “smokeless non-tobacco cigarette” patent filed by Herbert Gilbert in 1963.  The invention was intended as a safe form of smoking the uses heated, moist air or warm medication instead of burning tobacco and paper.  But despite Gilbert’s successfully receiving the patent in 1965, his invention did not come into fruition due to smoking’s enduring popularity at the time. In 2003, inspired by his own smoking habit, pharmacist and inventor Hon Lik filed a patent for the modern electronic cigarette, in effect taking over where Gilbert’s invention left off and creating a new industry in the process. \n\nVaporizers work either through the placing of plant materials or extract onto a heated surface (conducive heating), or when air heated by inhalation or a fan comes into contact with the concentrate (convection heating). These heating processes extract the cannabinoids and terpenes, warming the material just enough to turn it into vapor but not enough to combust. By contrast, smoking combusts the material, resulting in potentially harmful toxins and carcinogens that the smoker also inhales. \n\nRELATED: [5 WAYS OTHER THAN SMOKING TO CONSUME MARIJUANA](https://www.hellomd.com/health-wellness/596d1b982c7b4b3e1c2e81fc/5-ways-other-than-smoking-flower-to-consume-marijuana)\n\nDespite the growing popularity of vaping, patients exploring medical cannabis for the first time may only be familiar with smoking. “You do not have to smoke the cannabis,” explains [Anna Poulin]( https://www.hellomd.com/people/annapoulin), Manager of Physician and Patient Outreach with PharmaCannis. “In New York, the approved routes of administration of cannabis are vaping, oromucosal or sublingual administration or capsules for oral administration. Smoking as a method of administration of medical cannabis is expressly prohibited in New York State.”\n\n### Who Benefits Most from Vaping\n\nWhile vaping is solidifying its place in pop culture as a smoking alternative, it is still a new technology, and therefore it can be difficult for patients to know if vaping is their best method for ingesting cannabis. \n\n“The ideal candidates for vaping are folks who, if we’re focusing on chronic pain, have sharp shooting pains that they need instant relief from,” says Nelson Cuevas, General Manager and Head Pharmacist at PharmaCannis. This is because, as with smoking cannabis, patients can feel the effects very quickly. Adds Cuevas, “It’s a 90-second onset.”\n\nFor patients managing nausea or loss of appetite, vaping may be even more effective even the oldest known form of cannabis ingestion. “Vaping helps better than the tincture,” explains Cuevas. “For patients with nausea, anything that has any type of bitter taste or anything that they have to ingest…it helps them eventually, but they have to get past that first time drinking the medication.” \n\nA patient who is unable to eat may have better luck inhaling from a vaporizer, allowing the effects of the cannabis to curb his or her nausea, and even make them hungry. “The quick onset of the vape triggers your appetite,” Cuevas continues, “kind of like the munchies when you’re smoking regular flower.”\n\nVaping also appeals to patients who need something portable in order to administer their medicine when needed throughout the day, and its resulting vapor is much more discrete than telltale cannabis smoke. It’s a versatile option that patients can easily adjust to suit their needs, even down to changing the cartridge in order to experience the effects of different strains. \n\n“Tinctures and capsules aren’t yet strain specific like this,” Cuevas explains. “Indica is more for relaxing, the sativa will give folks energy to get through their day, and hybrid is a mix of both.”  Patients understand their own circumstances better than anyone; it’s important to inform your healthcare provider of your needs around taking medicine throughout the day so that the right strain is recommended.  \n\n“If patients want pain relief and they’re still working, they don’t want to have that tired feeling, they’ll tend to get the sativa,” he says. “Others resting at home, they’ll just want to relax so they’ll get the indica.” This variety allows patients to easily swap out the strain in response to their environment and circumstances, using just one tool and a few cartridges. Cuevas agrees, “It’s very individualized, picking the right formula for themselves.”\n\n### Drawbacks to Vaping\n\n“The only drawback is that the effects from vaping only lasts an hour or two,” says Cuevas, which may not be long enough for sufferers of chronic pain. But in the event that a patient needs something longer lasting, vaping may be a great companion for other types of administration whose effects last for several hours. “What we recommend is a two-pronged effect”, he explains. “They’ll have the tincture as a baseline so they’ll have significant relief throughout the day, but then they’ll have the breakthrough pain that’s normal for people with chronic pain, and that’s when they can use a vape.”\n\nAnother drawback is the newness of vaping itself, particularly with regard to the safety of vaping cannabis compared with smoking it. While the harmful of effects of smoking cigarettes is documented, and people understand that smoking anything can negatively affect the lungs, the long-term effects of smoking cannabis have not been clearly defined yet. Finally.\r\n\r\nA vaporizer pen can be a great alternative to smoking cannabis. Not only is it hassle free and discreet, but you still get the feeling that you are “smoking” because of the inhaling action. I’ve been using vaporizer (vape) pens for quite some time now; they’re my preferred method for on- the-go consumption.\r\n\r\n### Disposable Vape Pens vs Cartridges\r\nDisposable vaporizing pens are a breeze to use. Take them out of the box and puff on them until they run out. This makes them ideal to throw in your pocket or bag and forget about until you need it later. However, for the connoisseur, consuming the same strain or flavor all day may not cut it. For variety, pre-filled cartridges (aka 510 cartridges) offer a solution.\r\n\r\n510 cartridges are easily interchangeable, allowing you to customize your consumption experience. You can quickly unscrew one and swap it out for another. For instance, a sativa can offer an uplifting and creative boost in the morning, while a quick switch to a high CBD cartridge can help maintain balance and pain relief (if necessary) throughout the day.\r\n\r\n### Consuming Concentrates\r\n\r\nCustomization can prove incredibly useful in finding a treatment plan that works for you. But while cartridges are widely available, the variety at the local shop usually leaves a lot to be desired. This brings us to concentrates. My local shop, for instance, carries just a few varieties of 510 cartridges, but stocks a couple dozen different types of concentrates. But how to consume a concentrate has traditionally been tricky for the more novice patient. This is what I call ‘advanced play’.\r\n\r\nUsing vaporizer pens for oil and wax concentrates has always felt like a chore. They tend to come packaged with a small bag of complicated tools for loading and maintaining the pen, and I find things can easily go wrong. Complexity aside, a glowing red hot metal coil in the middle of a glass bubble seemed like the last thing I wanted to put in my pocket. So I’ve just passed on them and stuck mostly to cartridges for on-the-go. Until I met the Puffco Plus.\r\n\r\n### Puffco +: Vaporizer Cartridge & Dabbing Pen All-In-One\r\n\r\n[The Puffco Plus](https://www.hellomd.com/biz/puffco) is unique because it utilizes a ceramic bowl, and a removable “dart” rather than a coil for loading your concentrate. The dart sits inside the mouthpiece and allows you to travel without carrying around an external loading device. Not only does the dart improve airflow while minimizing waste, and improve flavor it’s also a dabbers best friend. A small portion, or dab, of concentrate can be placed directly on the dart for dosing purposes. When you turn on the Puffco+ feature called ‘sesh’ mode – it’s the closest thing you will find to a dab on the go.\r\n\r\nPerhaps one of the Puffco’s most valuable features is the interchangeability between the ceramic bowl and a 510 cartridge. With a couple quick turns you can swap between a pre-filled cartridge, and the ceramic bowl (for customizing your concentrates) . I have used a number of different batteries over the years, and the Puffco provided some the best results I’ve seen with a cartridge. Better batteries deliver more consistent, flavorful and satisfying pulls on a vaporizer pen.\r\n\r\nMy experience with the Puffco Plus was entirely different. After placing a small bit of wax onto the dart I switched it into Sesh mode and began consuming. I was pleasantly surprised to find the experience incredibly smooth and flavorful. My usual coughing fit was replaced by an easy exhale of a hefty vapor cloud. I found the experience incredibly relaxing – and I enjoyed it all on-the-go?\r\n\r\nThe Puffco Plus costs $99, and while more expensive than some of its predecessors, you do get what you pay for. Honestly, I think it is cheap at the price! The Puffco Plus is definitely one of the best looking vaporizer pens on the market. It has a sleek design that fits naturally in your hand. It’s intuitive to use; the cloud shaped button and matching Puffco Plus logo light up in three different colors to help you remember which heat setting you are using. Even the packaging has beautifully simplistic design (I felt like I was opening up the new iPhone), you could tell it housed something special.\r\n\r\nThe only thing that left me wanting was the duration of battery. I ran it down fairly quickly after making sure it had a full charge before beginning. I was using it fairly heavily over the course of an evening and half of the following day, but I found that it needed charging much sooner than your typical 510 batteries. The Puffco Plus is working harder and delivering more power that the every day vaporizer pen, but still for portability a long battery life is always a bonus. If you’re a heavy consumer you’ll probably want to make sure the unit has a full charge before you head out, which it can get in under 2 hours.\r\n\r\nSo to sum it up, if you consider yourself a concentrates connoisseur, then you need to try the Puffco Plus. The dart and ceramic chamber combine for a great experience whether you are looking to consume a specific amount, or just load up and take on the go.
